Dressin’ Like A Pirate by: Scurvy McGillywhiskers
Yarrrr... Our 11th Annual Tybee Island Pirate Fest be fast approachin’! Takin’ place October 8th - 11th, 2015, ye gunna be wantin’ to attend if a wee high seven seas fantasy be ye cup ‘o rum. Thar be always activities fer th’ lads, great music, a parade, fireworks, ‘n so much more. One thin’ that can be a wee intimidatin’ if ye want to go full pirate, be what exactly ye wear. I decided to put together a wee list to help ye folks out.
Here be some more tips if ye want to look like an authentic pirate. Pirates be known fer mix-matched colors, textures, ‘n types. Th’ typical rule ‘o thumb be 2 colors ‘n 3 textures, or 3 colors ‘n 2 textures. Colors that be acceptable: Earth tone colors, Black, Brown. Colors ye might avoid? Neon Colors (they really didn’t have neon in th’ day!!) th’ pink color be Carnation, thar be no hot pink, magenta or any other darker pink tones. Purple ‘n violet be used but only sparin’ly. Purple be extra rare ‘n extra expensive color. Hope ‘ tis helps! See ye at th’ Festival!

Mi’lord Pirates... Hats: Tri-corner hats, knit caps called Monmouth Caps, or a Cavalier Hat can all be used. A bandana would be worn to keep the sweat out of a seaman’s eyes. Shirts: A poet shirt works good or any sort of long sleeved white shirt with impressive cuffs if you want to look high class. If you are a rougher type of sea dog just opt out of the shirt and wear a vest. Pants: Get some trews! These are long pants on the baggy side with no pockets or fly. Or go for the breeches, pants that are slightly puffy that button just below the knee. Coats & Vests: The festival takes place in October so it may be cool enough outside to comfortably wear one of these. The waist coat is basically a long vest and the traditional pirate coat was only worn by the captain. Boots: Knee high boots, or fold over boots at the knee called Bucket Boots. Mi’lady Pirates... Hats & Stuff: Tri-corner Hat, Cavalier hat, or Mop Cap, Bandanas and sashes. Shirts & Tops: Chemise: A blouse like a poet shirt (not off the shoulder) with blossomy sleeves. Bodice: a front closing corset with shoulder straps. Corset: back lacing, tight fitting, over the bust cut with metal boning. Under bust/waist cincher: similar to a corset but cuts in under the bust line. Pants & Skirts: If you don’t want to wear a skirt, wear some harem pants. I’m a fan of the skirts. You can go short or long but make sure it is full and kind of swirly or you can go with the gathered and draped look. Either one is pretty cute. Shoes & Boots: High heeled boots look awesome but they aren’t very comfortable after a couple hours. You should go with a flat boot or some with a low heel. Rope sandals and even flip flops are also a good option.

Saturday ~ 9:15pm Main Stage Born in Jamaica, Junior Marvin moved to London as a child, where his love of both acting and music was nurtured. He appeared in the Beatles’ film “Help”,which was followed by a number of other television appearances. Meanwhile, Junior served his musical apprenticeship in America by playing with the likes of Blues Legend T-Bone Walker and Ike & Tina Turner. He quickly earned a reputation as an innovative and expressive blues/rock guitarist. Back in England he played with bands such as Herbie Goins & The Nighttimers, Blue Ace Unit and White Rabbit. Junior was a member of the London Cast of the musical “Hair” and can be heard on the Original London Cast Recordings. He contributed to Albums by Gerry Lockran, Rebop Kwakau Baah, Remi Kabacka, Ricco Rodriguez, Fairport Convention, Sandy Deny and many others on the UK scene. Junior was also invited to join the Keef Hartley Band who were pioneers of the burgeoning British blues/rock scene. Junior made a significant contribution as a writer, singer and lead guitarist to their acclaimed “Seventy Second Brave” Album, and also appeared on the followup release, “Lancashire Hustler.” Following Keef Hartley, Junior formed his own Rock Band “Hanson” and they were swiftly signed to Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s Manticore label by Mario ‘The Big M’ Medious (the label manager). Their debut Album “Now Hear This,” featured: Junior (Lead Guitar & Lead Vocals), Jean Roussell (Keybords), Conrad Isidore (Drums) & Clive Chaman (Bass). A second album for The Manticore label was titled “Magic Dragon.” The Band, “Hanson,” stayed together for two albums after which Junior undertook session work for the likes of Island Recording Artists Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood and Toots & The Maytals. On February 14, 1977 (Valentine’s Day), Junior was invited to join both Stevie Wonder & Bob Marley & The Wailers. His schoolmates and musician friends chose Bob Marley because of the fact that they were both Jamaicans…the rest is history. “Exodus” was Junior’s first album with Marley and The Wailers and it was voted “Best Album of the 20th Century” by Time Magazine. He is on all Bob Marley and The Wailers Albums/CDs since that time. Since Bob’s passing, in 1981, Junior has put out (4) four CDs with The Wailers: “ID,” “Majestic Warriors,” “Jah Message” and “My Friends” (Live). Junior can also be found on CDs with Burning Spear, Alpha Blondy, Bunny Wailer, Israel Vibrations, Culture, The Meditations, Beres Hammond, The Congos, O.A.R. and SOJA.

Friday ~ 8:15pm ~ Main Stage Even after playing over 200 shows a year, people just can’t get enough of Big Engine’s nitrous
fueled shows and the high energy music that brings down the house night after night. Along with the die-hard fans that follow the boys from town to town, uninitiated newcomers seldom last the entirety of the show without raising their fists in the air and singing along to the band’s catchy choruses and instantly memorable lyrics. These road warriors travel the country, bringing the party with crowd favorites: “Shake That Thing”, “That Girl’s a Freak”, “Turn It On,”“Party Like A Rockstar” and “Sister Mary.”
In good company, Big Engine has made friends by sharing the stage with Buckcherry, Motorhead, Bret Michaels, Vince Neil, Charlie Daniels, 38 Special, Ted Nugent, Jackyl, Shooter Jennings, and countless other national acts. Needless to say, they have amassed an army of gear heads, bikers, and race fans from the infamous Daytona and Sturgis bike rallies as well as NASCAR races. A Rock band for the video game generation - Big Engine’s anthemic, “Party Like a Rock Star,” is available for download for the Rock Band video game platform, an international sensation that ignited a new interest in music for younger generations. Big Engine’s 3 albums: 2007’s “Rock ‘n Roll Machine;” 2009’s “That Girl;” “and 2012’s “Turn It On” are all available online (on iTunes and Amazon MP3) and in select retailers. Along with their 2014 Prepare For Liftoff tour sponsored by Twisted Tea, the band has a brand new album entitled “Shot Like A Rocket” being released through Pavement Entertainment/MRI Sony Red on August, 19th 2014 available for preorder online at Best Buy, Amazon, FYE, CD Universe and other music retailers!

Friday & Saturday ~ Random times Little Matey’s Stage
Ahoy mates, party like it be 1724 with the Brigands! They are a musical minded group, performing songs, Sea Shanties and tunes, lore and fact, from the Golden Age of Piracy, 1650 -1750 and beyond. They have been called the ultimate tavern band and that is what they aim for. The music heard dockside, in a drinking etablishment frequented by sailors, pirates, freebooters and smugglers alike, was not the music heard in the King’s court nor in the concert halls of the day. It was music for hard working and maybe hard chased men, looking to lift a tankard, seek out the fairer sex and forget for awhile the life at sea, be it hauling nitrates to Chile or luffing matches with a fat prize off the coast of Dry Tortuga. Thats what a Brigands show is like. TheBrigands.com

Steal Drum Sets by Roy Swindelle Saturday Random times Roy Swindelle is perhaps one of the most well-known and respected musicians in the Coastal Empire as well as voted Best Musician on Tybee Island for several years. This past May, Roy Swindelle’s song “Living on Tybee Time” was proclaimed Tybee Island’s “official song” by Tybee’s Mayor and City Council. “Bend Me Over Buccaneer”, is a true “pirate” favorite for attendees at Tybee’s “Pirate Fest”! In the last several years he has mastered playing the Steel Drum. BAND4RENT.COM

Survivin’ Pirate Fest by: Scurvy McGillywhiskers
Welcome aboard a weekend that be anythin’ but ordinary, filled wit merriment, spiced grog, ‘n hot wenches stuffed in tiny corsets!! Tis be a place whar imagination be free to take flight, magic may exist once again, ‘n ye can forget reality fer a few short days or hours dependin’ on how much a ruckas ye can handle. Thar be somethin’ fer all ye pirates at th’ Tybee Island Pirate Fest, a parade, music, drinkin’, fireworks, ‘n fun children’s activities, a pettin’ zoo, delicious eats, ‘n so much more! But beware you scurvy cur, if ye don’t watch out, ye may be swabbin’ the decks to pay yer bar tab ‘n ye may be walkin’ like ye have a peg leg at the end of the day. We’ve put together a little survival guide for ye to make sure ye don’t spend all yer doubloons ‘n this experience be all ‘bout adventures ‘n fun rather than pain ‘n discomfort. 1. Don’t Break the Bank Yes, there is plenty to do, see, and purchase at The Tybee Island Pirate Fest but it’s never fun to have post festival regrets when you get your monthly bank statement. It is always a good idea to bring as much cash are you are comfortable spending and to leave the ATM card at home. Over the festival weekend you will have several chances to buy jewelry, costumes, art, and so much more directly from the creators. This is always a lot of fun but it is also very easy to succumb to impulse buys. By having a set budget, you will be more discriminate in your purchases and feel much better about your checking account come Monday morning. 2. Bring Some Comfortable Shoes I know the spike heel Pirate Boots look incredibly sexy but how good do you think they are going to feel after a couple hours of walking? Don’t forget to slip a pair of flip flops into your satchel if you want to make through the evening festivities! There are some incredible bands this year and you know you will want to rock it out during the shows, uncomfortable foot wear will kill those dreams fast. Be prepared! 3. HYDRATE For some reason people always get thirsty during the Pirate Fest Weekend and there are always plenty of beer vendors ready to quench that thirst. Drinking is fun when you are dressed like a pirate but don’t go overboard. Remember to drink water. In fact, put a couple of bottles in your bag so they’ll be ready for easy access. 4. Port-o-Potties These are a necessary evil. Search for the ones furthest away from the entrance because they are the ones that get used the least. Also, maybe bring some toilet paper in your bag and some hand sanitizer. If you are lady, make sure you know how to hover.
ROGUES, WENCHES, AND KREWES COSTUME CONTESTS Saturday, October 10th - 6pm - Main Stage Registration: Saturday 11am - 4:30pm - Info Booth Come claim ye awards for donning your finest pirate attire. Field may be narrowed to less than 20 contestants for Rouges and Wenches and four Krewes prior to contest. Come dressed to register!
CHILDREN’S COSTUME CONTEST Saturday, October 10th - 1pm - Little Matey’s Stage Registration: Saturday 10am - 12pm - Info Booth Field may be narrowed to less than 20 contestants in each category. 5. Children The Tybee Island Pirate Fest is so much fun for kids. There are all types of activities that they are going to love. However, the later it gets, the more rowdy grown up pirates without their little one get. Understand? Also, it is going to be crowded so be sure to keep a careful eye on the little ones.
PET’S COSTUME CONTEST Saturday, October 10th - 1pm - Little Matey’s Stage Registration: Saturday 10am - 12pm - Info Booth $5 suggested donation per pet Prizes for First and Second Place winners. All proceeds benefit a local non-profit. Pets must remain on a leash at all times.
6. Don’t forget your map It’s vital that you know where to find different shows, food vendors, and most importantly, the ale stands and restrooms. This will save you lots of time if you want to be on a schedule, or let you know which direction to wander if you don’t have a specific destination in mind. 7. Keep an Open Mind The Tybee Island Pirate Fest is a chance to lose the cynicism that makes regular life kind of boring at times. Here is an opportunity to dress up like a Pirate and swagger around and swill rum while the sun’s out! Have fun, let go, and don’t be afraid to look silly. Revel in this chance to be around other eccentric people and have a blast! Smooth sailing my friends, see you at the Festival. Arrgh!
