The Motley Tones washed ashore at the Blackbeard Festival in Hampton, VA in 2010 and have been entertaining crowds ever since. Helped by friends and fans, they are now the region’s most popular pirate performing group, entertaining adults and children alike with their unique blend of classical and oft-times amusing sea shanties. They are known throughout the mid-Atlantic region both for their highly interactive street shows as well as their enthusiastic stage shows. This dynamic group sings madrigals for the king by day, pub songs for the hoi polloi by night, and love songs and sailor songs all the day long. Their music ranges from acapella harmonies to traditional “call and response” tunes to duets, solo ballads and parodies of popular tunes. All loosely tied to the “Golden Age of Piracy.” In live performance, they incorporate pieces of period garb and stories into their performance as well as just plain fun stuff.

QUIET RIOT continues their historic journey with Metal Health founding member Frankie Banali who is joined by veteran bassist Chuck Wright and guitarist Alex Grossi from their most stable lineup, and vocalist James Durbin the season ten finalist on American Idol. QUIET RIOT is a rock & roll phenomenon. Famously described as the first heavy metal band to top the pop chart at #1 on Billboard magazine, the Los Angeles quartet became an overnight sensation thanks to their monster 1983 smash album Metal Health. The story of QUIET RIOT begins in 1980 when Kevin DuBrow formed a new band under his own name, working with Frankie Banali and a variety of musicians over the next few years before signing with Pasha/CBS Records, reverting back to the QUIET RIOT moniker, and entering the studio with new guitarist Carlos Cavazo and bassist Chuck Wright to start work on a new album. The year was 1982 and, following Randy Rhoads’ welldocumented death, former henchman Rudy Sarzo left Ozzy, replacing Chuck Wright who is the bass player on record for both the “Metal Health” and “Don’t Wanna Let You Go” tracks, to complete the lineup and sessions for what would become 1983’s Metal Health. Driven by the irresistible double whammy of the title track’s muscular bass line and a raucous rendition of the old Slade chestnut “Cum on Feel the Noize,” the album stormed up the U.S. charts, duly reaching the number one spot and going platinum five times over in the process at that time. The sales of Metal Health has now exceeded the 10 million mark worldwide to date. QUIET RIOT returned to the studio to record 1984’s Condition Critical, which went on to sell over 2 million copies in the US and included another chart-ready Slade cover in “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” and the self penned “Party All Night.” In 1986 QUIET RIOT re-grouped to launch the QR III record, Sarzo had

been replaced by former bassist Chuck Wright. Vocalist Paul Shortino stepped in and recorded 1988’s simply named Quiet Riot with Banali, Cavazo, and new bassist Sean McNabb. In 1991, DuBrow and Cavazo began working together once again, joined by Frankie Banali and eventually recording 1993’s Terrified with bassist Kenny Hillery. Down to the Bone followed two years later with Chuck Wright back on bass, and in 1997, a one-off performance at an after show party hosted by industrial shock rocker Marilyn Manson who had requested to Banali that QUIET RIOT perform, lured bassist Rudy Sarzo back to the fold. With that lineup once again, QUIET RIOT hit the road playing venues across America, Europe and Asia. This lineup was captured on 1999’s Alive and Well album, and 2001 saw the release of Guilty Pleasures. QUIET RIOT officially parted company with Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo in October of 2003. In 2004 DuBrow and Banali recruited guitarist Alex Grossi and bassist Chuck Wright and continued to tour nonstop throughout 2006 in America, Europe, South America and Asia. For the recording of Rehab in 2006, DuBrow and Banali entered the studio with bassist Tony Franklin and guitarist Neil Citron, both long time friends of Banali. QUIET RIOT with the lineup of DuBrow, Banali, Wright and Grossi continued to perform live worldwide until November of 2007 when sadly, Kevin DuBrow’s singing career was cut short with his passing on November 25, 2007. Frankie Banali’s history with QUIET RIOT began in 1982 and he has the distinction of being the only member of QUIET RIOT to have recorded on every single QUIET RIOT release from 1983’s Metal Health through 2006’s Rehab. Since the loss of his friend and band mate Kevin DuBrow, and with careful consideration, soul searching and with the blessings and support of Kevin DuBrow’s family, Frankie has decided to continue his journey and the musical legacy of QUIET RIOT along with bassist Chuck Wright, guitarist Alex Grossi and vocalist James Durbin.

Survivin’ Pirate Fest by: Scurvy McGillywhiskers

Welcome aboard a weekend that be anythin‘

but ordinary, filled wit merriment, spiced grog, ‘n hot wenches stuffed in tiny corsets!! Tis be a place whar imagination be free to take flight, magic may exist once again, ‘n ye can forget reality fer a few short days or hours dependin‘ on how much a ruckas ye can handle. Thar be somethin‘ fer all ye pirates at th‘ Tybee Island Pirate Fest, a parade, music, drinkin‘, fireworks, ‘n fun children‘s activities, a pettin‘ zoo, delicious eats, ‘n so much more! But beware you scurvy cur, if ye don‘t watch out, ye may be swabbin‘ the decks to pay yer bar tab ‘n ye may be walkin‘ like ye have a peg leg at the end of the day. We‘ve put together a little survival guide for ye to make sure ye don‘t spend all yer doubloons ‘n this experience be all ‘bout adventures ‘n fun rather than pain ‘n discomfort.

Here is a list of 10 helpful hints that will make you safe and happy during the 14th Annual Tybee Island Pirate Fest! Smooth sailin‘ me buckos, see ye at th‘ Festival.

Arrgh!

Barnacle Bill Bedlam

1. DON’T BREAK THE BANK Yes, there is plenty to do, see, and purchase at The Tybee Island Pirate Fest but it’s never fun to have post festival regrets when you get your monthly bank statement. It is always a good idea to bring as much cash are you are comfortable spending and to leave the ATM card at home. Over the festival weekend you will have several chances to buy jewelry, costumes, art, and so much more directly from the creators. This is always a lot of fun but it is also very easy to succumb to impulse buys. By having a set budget, you will be more discriminate in your purchases and feel much better about your checking account come Monday morning. 2. BRING SOME COMFORTABLE SHOES I know the spike heel Pirate Boots look incredibly sexy but how good do you think they are going to feel after a couple hours of walking? Don’t forget to slip a pair of flip flops into your satchel if you want to make through the evening festivities! There are some incredible bands this year and you know you will want to rock it out during the shows, uncomfortable foot wear will kill those dreams fast. Be prepared! 3. HYDRATE For some reason people always get thirsty during the Pirate Fest Weekend and there are always plenty of beer vendors ready to quench that thirst. Drinking is fun when you are dressed like a pirate but don’t go overboard. Remember to drink water. In fact, put a couple of bottles in your bag so they’ll be ready for easy access. 4. SUNSCREEN I know it is October, but if you will be celebrating during the day and it is nice and sunny, wear sunscreen on your exposed skin. You will get burned. This is a fact. 5. PORT-O-POTTIES These are a necessary evil. Search for the ones furthest away from the entrance because they are the ones that get used the least. Also, maybe bring some toilet paper in your bag and some hand sanitizer. If you are lady, hone up on your hovering skills. 6. CHILDREN The Tybee Island Pirate Fest is so much fun for kids. There are all types of activities that they are going to love. However, the later it gets, the more rowdy grown up 7. KEEP AN OPEN MIND The Tybee Island Pirate Fest is a chance to lose the cynicism that makes regular life kind of boring at times. Here is an opportunity to dress up like a Pirate and swagger around and swill rum while the sun’s out! Have fun, let go, and don’t be afraid to look silly. Revel in this chance to be around other eccentric people and have a blast!

Smooth sailing my friends, see you at the Festival. tybee island pirate fest | buccaneers bulletin | tybeeisland.com 21

Dressin’ Like A Pirate by: Scurvy McGillywhiskers

Yarrrr... Our 14th Annual Tybee Island Pirate Fest be fast approachin’! Takin’ place October 4th - 7th, 2018, ye gunna be wantin’ to attend if a wee high seven seas fantasy be ye cup ‘o rum. Thar be always activities fer th’ lads, great music, a parade, fireworks, ‘n so much more. One thin’ that can be a wee intimidatin’ if ye want to go full pirate, be what exactly ye wear. I decided to put together a wee list to help ye folks out. Here be some more tips if ye want to look like an authentic pirate. Pirates be known fer mix-matched colors, textures, ‘n types. Th’ typical rule ‘o thumb be 2 colors ‘n 3 textures, or 3 colors ‘n 2 textures. Colors that be acceptable: Earth tone colors, Black, Brown. Colors ye might avoid? Neon Colors (they really didn’t have neon in th’ day!!) th’ pink color be Carnation, thar be no hot pink, magenta or any other darker pink tones. Purple ‘n violet be used but only sparin’ly. Purple be extra rare ‘n extra expensive color. Hope ‘ tis helps! See ye at th’ Festival!

Mi’lord Pirates... Hats: Tri-corner hats, knit caps called Monmouth Caps, or a Cavalier Hat can all be used. A bandana would be worn to keep the sweat out of a seaman’s eyes. Shirts: A poet shirt works good or any sort of long sleeved white shirt with impressive cuffs if you want to look high class. If you are a rougher type of sea dog just opt out of the shirt and wear a vest. Pants: Get some trews! These are long pants on the baggy side with no pockets or fly. Or go for the breeches, pants that are slightly puffy that button just below the knee. Coats & Vests: The festival takes place in October so it may be cool enough outside to comfortably wear one of these. The waist coat is basically a long vest and the traditional pirate coat was only worn by the captain. Boots: Knee high boots, or fold over boots at the knee called Bucket Boots. Mi’lady Pirates... Hats & Stuff: Tri-corner Hat, Cavalier hat, or Mop Cap, Bandanas and sashes. Shirts & Tops: Chemise: A blouse like a poet shirt (not off the shoulder) with blossomy sleeves. Bodice: a front closing corset with shoulder straps. Corset: back lacing, tight fitting, over the bust cut with metal boning. Under bust/waist cincher: similar to a corset but cuts in under the bust line. Pants & Skirts: If you don’t want to wear a skirt, wear some harem pants. I’m a fan of the skirts. You can go short or long but make sure it is full and kind of swirly or you can go with the gathered and draped look. Either one is pretty cute. Shoes & Boots: High heeled boots look awesome but they aren’t very comfortable after a couple hours. You should go with a flat boot or some with a low heel. Rope sandals and even flip flops are also a good option.
