A Brief History of Bernie’s on Tybee Welcome! We’re glad you made it down the main street and turned toward the ocean onto Tybee’s most famous downtown road -- Tybrisa Street. This area has been the main commercial hub on Tybee since the early 1900s. Tybee Island is a 2.7 square mile island with a year-round population of 3100 residents. Our wonderful seaside community holds many breath-taking sites, one of which is the historic Tybee Lightstation, located on the North end of the island. Bernie’s Oyster House was founded in 1993 with an original location on Savannah’s Historic River Street, and expanded to Tybee Island in 2006. Since opening on Tybee, Bernie’s has become a tradition for those seeking an authentic oyster house experience, live entertainment, and pleasures only found on the northern-most barrier island of Georgia.
