How do you make a taxi company even remotely interesting? You get picked up and they take you from point A to point B. Duh. Do you even recall a time when you climbed into a cab and were even remotely interested in the driver? Nope. Not unless they were driving you off the pier. You want to get where you’re going and be done with it. Well, welcome to a whole new world of driving excellence! The Crab Cab is not your typical cab company. The drivers are fun, courteous, dependable, trustworthy and sober. Your door will be opened for you and shut behind you (southern hospitality y’all). Once you are in, then it’s on! One of Crab’s main goals (other than getting you to your destination) is to enjoy the ride. With fun games such as ‘Name that Tune’, Random Trivia, and Taxi Cab Confessions, you are not going to be bored. Over this past year, Tybee has seen the company expand from one van to four, add a limousine, and acquire a driving staff of eight. Approaching a very successful one year anniversary, Crab Cab has full intentions to continue the expansion to include additional vans and a wider base for fare pick ups. This is excellent news for Wilmington, Whitemarsh and surrounding islands. Locally owned and operated by Joe Sheffield, Crab Cab is the premier taxi service on Tybee. With dispatch available 24 – 7, a driver is available to pick you up on Tybee and take you wherever you need to go, whether it be Tybee Time, a Sand Gnats game, Savannah or the airport. You will be delivered in one piece with a fun story to tell your friends about your great adventure in The Crab Cab! Born and raised in Savannah, Joe has been vacationing on Tybee since he was a young boy. After working in the construction equipment business for many years, Joe decided it was time for a change. Having moved from Wilmington to Tybee seven years ago, he saw a need for a consistent and reliable taxi service. That

and since he was already driving his three kids around for free, it made sense to start getting paid for something he enjoys doing. Procuring the original business from George Helmken one year ago, Joe wanted a logo that you could not miss. Having driven by a crab trap shop for over 20 years, an idea was created. Oh yeah. That’s why there is a crab trap on top of every crab cab. You can’t miss that. Call them or flag them down. I don’t’ recommend jumping in front of them though. The Crab also works closely with the local police department. Did you do something stupid and need a lift from jail? Well, call The Crab. Did you do something stupid and the only way to prevent from you going to jail is to call a taxi? Well, call The Crab. However, do not do anything stupid in The Crab or you will be arrested and mocked. No fun in that. As far as rates go, The Crab is affordable to everyone: $10 + $1 for each additional person anywhere on Tybee (except to Café Loco where it’s free and you get a free beer) (Woohoo to that!) $22 + $2 for each additional person to Wilmington; $30 + $3 for each additional person to Savannah; $40 + $4 for each additional person to Southside; $50 + $5 for each additional person to Airport. The limousine is also extremely affordable and it can include a uniformed chauffeur (upon request). For limo service it is $20 for anywhere on Tybee plus $2 for each additional person. If you want to get all dressed up and hit the town, they got you. The cost is $60 per hour with a 3 hour min. No worries about getting lost. All drivers have GPS. So if you want to drive out to Timbucktoo, yeah, they can find that. R a n d o m information you must know: All the vans and the limo seat six people, not including the driver. Don’t forget the Sand Gnats Thirsty Thursdays! They can get you there and back. Please do try to call at least 30 minutes before you want to leave. Crab races and Pub Crawls! Right on! Crab-A-Longs (you must be 21). Don’t forget: You must originate from Tybee. For all information go to www.tybeecrabcabs. com. Enjoy your ride!! 786-CRAB (2722)! Tybee Breeze

Keeping It Real I would like to welcome two new businesses to Tybee: Tybee Teeth, which was formerly Island dentistry, They have a new owner, Jessanna, but the same great friendly and very attractive staff! You can read about them on page 21, and don’t forget to stop by their open house on July 30th at 6pm; they’re doing it up Tybee style, I mean Low Country style!

and everything that can be from recycled products is, like their plates, napkins and business cards, to name a few. For now their menu is mostly tacos, but not in the tradional way, but there seems to be no other way to describe it. I had a steak taco, which was flat bread, with lime & tequlia marinated steak, topped with garlic aioli and fresh baby arugula, which was assembled like a taco, but far from it. They also have homemade chips, with several types of dips, sweet potato fries with chipotle dip, and varies types of fresh vegtables available, as well as, chicken fingers or mini corn dogs for the kids. They have live music on Fri & Sat. $2-16oz. Red Stripe cans... Always! Margartias and Sangrias made from scratch (they are so yummy)! Their margaritas are 2 for 1 everyday until 6pm. Wednesdays is wine tasting night, movies on Sundays, and free wifi. They are definately worth checking out! Entertainment reporter, Jennifer Beale, writes an article for us this month on the next page, pg 10, about all her crazy and funny observations of all the “goings on” on Tybee.

The Tybee Island Social Club is a new restaurant where Cousin Vinnie’s use to be next to the Shell station. It is owned by Kurtis Schumm, of the music brother’s duo “Kurtis and Kody,” and Sarah Lanier, who is a home designer, and the restaurant is decorated by her and with her furniture line. The building has been remodeled to a more “open” plan, it has a laid back atmosphere with a rustic feel. Their food is local and mostly organic, everything is fresh, fresh, fresh, “Be Breezy... RUMINATIONS… By Jennifer Beale Tybee Babe at Heart Entertainment Reporter WJCL/Fox28 Anchor Some advice for the Tybee well-heeled demo: 61% of adults with a household income of $100,000-plus redeemed a coupon in the last six months. The man of the house figures big in the statistic. The main sources are the internet and newspapers. The term “sophisticated couponer,” is quickly becoming a mainstream phrase in our gut-wrenched economy. New lifestyle for the über-swells. Could it be that saucy and sassy women live longer in our memories? The jabberwocky on Tybee in the past weeks always seemed to include the death of Rue McClanahan at 76. She played the love-starved Southern belle chasing men on the “Golden Girls.” Hard to forget the scheming ploys of her character Blanche Deveraux as she spilled her man-hungry plots to Betty White, Bea Arthur, and Estelle Getty. The Florida Foursome was an outrageous comedy hit in the 80s…and Blanche in particular put her face on elder sexual liberation for seven years. Humming their theme song yet? You can still laugh along with them in reruns. More than $62 million so far recorded in box office receipts for “The Last Song.” Reviews are still running hot, cold and disinterested, depending on whether you go for starlet Miley Cyrus or hate Nicholas Sparks’ formulaic novels. Miley admits on her fan site that she is booking an acting coach. She never had one except for her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. One in-between comment from a social media source goes like this: “The Georgia locations are handsome, and the people are pretty, but any resemblance to real life is purely coincidental.” So, when was Tybee supposed to be reality-based? The Tybee tourism folks are into divining paradise images. They go easily to our kooky soul. And they do it with vigor. Oh well. It seems to me that we the people know the real deal that includes the bouncy ups

and downs of all our sand-spun characters… Notice this vacation season on Tybee features fewer teeth in the mouths of tourists than last year? Must be a trend we are missing out on. We’re still leading on tattoos. Two of the best questions I’ve been asked by the touring folk: “Did they move the lighthouse? “ And,” Can you tell me just how deep Tybee is since it is just a floating barrier island?” Sometimes it is just hard to be in the state of grace when answering. 30 billion videos watched online in the early May measurement, with Google grabbing 43% of the action. And almost 84% of the total American internet audience searched for online video. Shopping for home health care? Tybee’s Julia Foster (like the Australian beer) might just be the person you need. First off, she’s from Davenport, Plymouth in jolly ol’ England. She came to Tybee after visiting us for 14 years with an idea learned from years working in assisted living. She provides “everything you can’t do for yourself,” including meals, hygiene and light housekeeping to insurance and billing needs. Her staff is bonded and insured. She offers an alternative to the nursing home. She also runs this service in northeast Pennsylvania with a staff of 50. And, Julia says it is all totally confidential. You can reach Julia Foster at 786-0819. Already, Just Julia Home Care polo shirts are popping up all over Tybee And, she is connected to our new house call physician, Dr. Jerry Williams, The Beach Doc, who knows a bunch about grueling jellyfish stings for starters. Dr. J is also working on a medical stabilization unit for Tybee and that would be so welcomed. He’s already done a guest shot in front of City Council to explain and ask for action. Good to see our healthcare needs attended by two top-shelf medical pros living on hometown Tybee. The Beach Doc can be reached at 308-0444. He’s been meeting and greeting business folks on the island as well as taking many calls for his services. He is a child and adult neurologist by training with a Savannah practice and super passionate about medical care for Tybee. Queen Roma Harper gives her blessings on both wellness practitioners. Know for sure summer is here as the Polk Street Beach was hit with a bacteria warning covering the northern most part of Tybee at the mouth of the Savannah River, from the end of the beach to the jetty. It has

been lifted. It seems to happen two or three times a season in that locale. The EPA cleared the area after the bacterial levels decreased. Bad belly stuff could have been the norm for swimmers. Tybee’s Burke Day gets his Port Security Bill signed into law after two snuffs from Governor Perdue. Our outgoing State Rep fought against untrained security guards blessed legally to exercise police powers without standards and oversight. Not the case now in a post-9/11 world. Quite a state of Georgia run for Burke, and the Day family is a Tybee tradition. Hope he is finally dry after Grand Marshaling the Bum’s parade. He tells the story of driving his wheelchair from a bathroom into a House meeting vote with a roll of toilet paper streaming behind him. He says he just tucked it in the seat beside him and let it rip. You gotta love this guy. He’ll always remember the pained look all over their legislative faces! Coolness abounds. Social: It’s a new eatery at 13th and Butler. It features tacos, Boston butt, steak, collards, butter beans, black beans, and sweet potato fries. The veggie menu features rosemary roasted squash. For starters, I hear the creamy Queso dip with chips and the roasted red pepper salsa is worth your attention. Top Sail on the north end across from Café Loco is getting cheers with Korean delights featured. Lookin’ to book it out of Tybee for a fast mountain weekend? Try Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The new Titanic Museum has already been visited by…well, passengers…in the last 90 days. The actual Titanic artifacts to see are worth your gas money. PR folks there say you’ll get to touch the frozen surface of an iceberg and that ain’t bad in this heat. And, you can send the SOS telling the world the awful news from the Marconi Wireless Room. If you get to sing with Dolly Parton, your drive back will be in reverie!

his mother on June 8. The City of Tybee, as you know, was named in a lawsuit triggered by the Tasing of 18-year-old Clifford by Tybee PD the night of the Bum’s Parade outside the Rock House. Another theme emerged June 10th outside City Hall when PRICE IS RIGHT stick-ons were paraded by Jimmy Price supporters at the council meetings. Jimmy Price was hit with an unlimited suspension with pay. July 27 is the scheduled date for Clifford’s disorderly conduct hearing… if that ever happens. Folks wearing the stickons figured Jimmy was railroaded. Ms. Sandra Cornelius spoke to WJCL/FOX 28 News in heartfelt ways about his long safety service to Tybee. She said he devoted most of his life to Tybee. So did others backing Price and the police. They are Annie Sereni, Beverly Wait, and Jamie Hendrix. We all know parts of this story. And we all seem to fall in divided camps only agreeing on the need for public safety and differing on ways to achieve it. And, both camps know it all is a long way from being over. (The GBI report was due June 25th. That date was past our deadline for July.) All this came down after the closing of St. Michael’s Catholic School. That event was startling enough in itself. We all said goodnight to a large personal piece of Tybee history. It’s been an arduous walk to summer and the 4th of July. I got to finally light up a big smile as June labored on when I noticed a small, orange Dodge on the Tybee Road, heading for our island with chalk writing on the rear window: HONEYMOON BOUND. The young folks on board smiled back and honked. Our recent troubles immediately melted, and I was eased in that instant exchange. I remember thinking the dream lives … and Tybee lives in it.

GET TOASTED AND TASED ON TYBEE. That madefor-tee-shirt bar theme quickly emerged in street talk on Tybrisa after the troubles on May 21 that were followed by the lawsuit filed by Clifford Grevemberg and

By Jason Buelterman Mayor of Tybee Island I hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer thus far. As you know, we are well into this year’s hurricane season. The City is conducting an extensive hurricane exercise on July 14 so that we can identify any possible gaps in our plans. We have been extremely lucky in recent decades in that we have not been directly hit by a strong hurricane. Let’s all continue to hope for the best while recognizing that we must plan for the worst. The Island’s hotels and short term rentals, from all reports, are having a very good year thus far. Some of this is due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. One never wants to benefit at someone else’s expense, but the reality is that many are opting to spend their vacation dollars on the east coast instead of heading to the Gulf coast of Alabama, Mississippi or Florida. This is extremely unfortunate for those communities and we pray that they will quickly recover from this mess. Many have asked me whether Tybee is prepared for any potential impacts from the spill. We have had a conference call with Congressman Kingston’s office, met with the local Coast Guard and been in continual contact with emergency management officials. One recurring theme is that there is not an expectation that this will have much of an impact on Tybee. Just in case, though, we did inquire about any possible need for drastic steps such as containment booms. However, should there be an impact; we are told that the oil would be so diluted that such equipment would not be necessary. Tybee happens to sit comfortably back from the Gulf Stream relative to other areas on the east coast which in this case benefits us greatly. Any oil that would make its way out of the Gulf and into the Atlantic would get here via the fast-moving Gulf Stream and since it is so far from Tybee’s shores, the impact to our community is expected to be either non-existent or minimal. Nevertheless, the authorities have been wrong in the past so we will continue monitor the situation very closely. Several people have asked me why the City installed what appear to be random blue reflectors in our city streets recently. And why, I have been asked, are they not in the middle of the street? They were all put in place to notify firefighters of the location of fire 12 Tybee Breeze

hydrants. The side of the street they are on indicates which side of the street the hydrant is on. It is all part of ongoing efforts to keep all of us safe and to keep our insurance premiums low. For the past few months, I think the Savannah Morning News could have changed its name to the “Tybee Morning News.” We have been in the paper and other local media outlets quite a bit of late. Much of what has been going on involves litigation so there isn’t much I can say on the matter. I did release a statement in mid-June after getting repeated calls from the media about the situation and have included the statement below. Mayor’s Night In will be on July 13th from 7 until 9 PM. Please call Vivian Woods at 786.4573, ext. 103 for an appointment. In next month’s article, I will review the fiscal year 2010-2011 budget which we should be approving at the end of June. Have a great Fourth of July! “Statement from City of Tybee Island Mayor Buelterman Tybee Island, GA – (June 3, 2010) Tybee’s Mayor Jason Buelterman today released the following statement: There has been a great deal of media coverage in recent weeks about an incident involving the use of a taser on Tybee a few weeks ago. Many have requested an official response from the City. Please understand that our City has taken significant steps to address the concerns raised by this incident, but unfortunately we are limited as to what we can say publicly because of a notice of litigation, an actual lawsuit, a pending case, and an ongoing internal investigation. The City does take the matter seriously and has taken the following steps: -We reached out to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to conduct a thorough review of the incident so as to ensure that an unbiased and thorough account of the circumstances is obtained. -We have purchased cameras for our taser equipment. -Our officers will soon receive training so they can better recognize conditions such as autism. We are grateful to the Mathew Reardon Center (MRC) for their willingness to assist us in this endeavor. The Reardon Center is dedicated to the care & education of children with neurodevelopment disabilities, and we are hopeful that their expertise will help our City as we work to prepare for a growing population of young people with such conditions. -We immediately released the police reports about the incident to the public and will also be as forthcoming as possible about the findings of the GBI investigation. -The investigation of personnel matters continues. Much of what has transpired thus far relative to personnel does not directly relate to the tazing incident but rather to the reports issued after the incident took place. We have a City Manager form

of government, which Tybee voters approved over a decade ago. This form of government empowers our City Manager to handle issues related to personnel. The City Council has done a good job of abiding by our Charter and allowing our City Manager to manage her staff in a way that she sees fit. It should also be noted that our City is focused on responding to this situation by taking a methodical and deliberative approach so as to ensure constructive outcomes which we would not obtain from a decision-making process based on emotion, rumor and speculation. I would also like to point out something else. Our Police Department has an extremely challenging job. Tybee has approximately 3800 residents. But in the summer, Tybee’s actual population can swell as’ many as 30,000 people. It is extremely difficult to effectively and efficiently police a population that has such a high degree of fluctuation in terms of size. Despite this fact, our Police force does a very good job of fulfilling its mission. In the end, the mission of our police department is to protect and serve Tybee’s citizens, tourists, and visitors. We will continue to strive to make sure their mission is fulfilled. As always, feel free to contact me at 786-4573, ext. 108 or via e-mail at buelterman@hotmail.com. See you around town.

A New Way to Look at You Tybee Island YMCA and Recreation Department By Hillary Brodofsky - Executive Director

Summer is in full gear and there are great activities for all ages at the Tybee Island YMCA. Whether you are here for a week, here for the summer, or a Tybee resident, we can fill your recreational needs on the Island. There are so many opportunities to get involved in YMCA programs; it’s hard to list them all. But I’ll try… starting with surf camp. This summer, you’ll have six sessions to try your hand at conquering the great waves of Tybee led by our surfing guru Jimmy Manning who has been surfing for over 40 years. These weeklong sessions are held at the north beach of the island and hosted by a great staff and volunteer crew made up of local surfers— Jennifer Wittendorf, Sarah Bacon, Haley Hill, Steve Horton, Cal Pyrch, Samantha Timmons, Kelly Strojny, Alex Taylor and Atsushi Yumada. July 16 is our monthly Friday night Family Roller Skating. For only $3 per person, it’s the best value on the island. Come show off your old school skills either on traditional r o l l e r s k a t e s or roller blades. We have sizes all the way from youth size 10 to adult size 13. All proceeds benefit our Tybee Island Priceless Gifts Scholarship Fund. Also coming back this summer is our popular kayak camp hosted by Shane and the crew at North Island Surf and Kayak. Campers paddle out to Little Tybee,

the Cockspur Lighthouse and maneuver the back river channels as well. If you’re really looking to get out of your comfort zone, we are offering Kiteboarding Camp for the first time this summer. The guys at All-Out Kiteboarding are hosting this high energy experience for all you thrill seekers out there. Space is limited for these camps, so sign up soon. Rounding out our summer lineup of youth activities are tennis lessons and of course traditional day camp. Tennis is offered in monthlong Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions beginning at 8am at the Memorial Park Courts. Lessons are open to youth ages 5-13. For those of you that need all day care, traditional day camp promises not to disappoint. Camper activities include, yoga, arts and crafts, dance, gardening, swimming, high ropes courses, zip lines, climbing walls, cooking, sports, games, and of course a few great field trips to the Jacksonville Zoo and the Statesboro waterpark Splash in the ‘Boro. This month we welcome our new Membership Director, Brandon Harris to our YMCA staff team. Brandon is a native of Albany, Georgia but now enjoys Tybee Island just as much as the rest of us do. When asked about working for the YMCA, Brandon says “I am looking forward to working because of the impact it has on the community. I have always enjoyed working with people and seeing my results in their faces, instead of just in numbers. It is truly an honor to be part of a close knit team of selfless individuals dedicated to promoting such a wonderful message. In my spare time, I always try to be outdoors or working towards a new hobby or adventure. I deeply enjoy rock climbing and paddle sports as well as more competitive sports like tennis and bicycle racing. I am truly excited by the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as I begin my journey with the Tybee Island YMCA.” Please stop by the YMCA to say hello to Brandon and ask him all about the latest programs and membership opportunities at the YMCA. Our Seniors’ Active Adult League is certainly

active this month. Every week you can join us for Hand and Foot card games, Line Dancing, and Bridge Club. Our field trips for the month of July include a trip to the Diamond Casino in Savannah on July 14th at 11am. On July 31st, join us for a Haunted Dinner at Six Pence Pub and then off to Savannah’s Ghost & Gravestone Trolley Tour at 5pm. For more info or to register for either of these trips, please call the YMCA at 786-9622. And we’ve got something for the rest of the adults too. Beat the heat with our popular water aerobics classes on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 9-10am and Tuesday/Thursday from 6-7pm. All water aerobics classes are held at River’s End Campground Pool. For indoor activities, we have volleyball, basketball, or try one of our 32 weekly fitness classes including tone and burn, core, yoga, pilates, spin, zumba, kickboxing, chair aerobics, and meditation. Also check out our expanded workout facility complete with over 40 pieces of cardio and strength training equipment. If you’re going to get a workout on the island, the YMCA is definitely your best bet! It’s not too late to get that summer beach body or just have more energy and feel better about yourself. Y e a r l y and seasonal memberships are available as well as

guest passes for those just stopping in on vacation. Come be a part of what 875 other Tybee Island Residents already joined---the Tybee Island YMCA! And don’t forget, scholarships are available. You say to yourself, “gosh Hillary, I really would like to be a part of all of this but our finances are really strapped this year.” We can take care of you! In 2009, we gave out over $59,000 in scholarships to youth and families just like you for programs, camps, memberships, sports. Whatever the reason, the YMCA is here. Thanks to generous support from donations from Tybee Island residents and local business, we won’t turn anyone away due to an inability to pay. We want healthy and happy families on Tybee and promise to make that happen. Stop in today and see what we can do for you! For any questions about upcoming programs, please feel free to call us at 786-9622. Thanks for supporting the YMCA, Tybee YMCA Hours of Operation Monday – Thursday - 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM Friday – 5:30 AM – 8:30 PM Saturday – 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM Sunday 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Did You Ever Notice? By Judy O’Neill I’m been observing life for a while now. I can sit on my porch and watch a lot of the world go by and that leaves time for reflection. Usually I like to write about Life’s Mysteries. But, here’s another group of things that I’ve been thinking about. Did you ever notice that... A lot of political candidates have strange names? Sometimes it sounds like they have two last names. If you have a little free time and think you might take a little snooze on the sofa, somebody somewhere will either (a) crank up a lawn mower, (b) work on their boat motor, or (c) make home repairs using loud power tools? If you leave work early, everyone you can think of will call and wonder where the heck you are? And the one call you’ve waited on for three days will come in. If you make plans in advance to go somewhere or to have a little fun outside of your

16

usual sphere of life that will be the only day the repairman can come to fix anything that needs it? The only pair of shoes you like in a store will be the very one they no longer have your size in? The day you go shopping in your favorite store will be either the day after or the day before the biggest sale day they’ve ever had? People think rules are made for other people, not them! It’s no fun to be the only sober person in a crowd of drinkers? However, being the only tipsy person in a crowd of sober people is totally different. Watching the Food Network if you’re on a diet is counterproductive? Actually it’s torture. You do know that food you don’t even like looks good when you’re dieting, don’t you? All those beautiful Tybee song birds we love to hear are not so beautiful at 5AM? If you go to the car wash, it takes you over 30 minutes to readjust all your settings that the car wash folks felt compelled to adjust for their 5 minutes inside your car? (Right, Patti?) Most people think their pets are cuter than you think they are? Children, too, come to think about it. (There are exceptions: Mindy, Curt, & Starling.) We’re rarely happy with the weather? In the winter, we can’t wait for summer. In the summer, we can’t wait for winter. I’d like it somewhere in between year round. It takes getting old before you realize you don’t know everything? Before you really don’t care what everybody else does or how they do it? Before you realize your mother was always right? Before you actually start to understand yourself? There are some people who truly do like looking at other people’s vacation pictures? (I am actually one of those special few.) If you talk about your health issues, you’ll get to hear all the details of other folks’ surgeries? Really detailed details, too. Ewww. Some smells can transport you to another time and bring back memories? The other day I walked by a guy who was wearing a cologne that took me straight back to my high school and college days. I swear I followed him around for a few minutes just to enjoy feeling eighteen again. (Don’t worry I didn’t turn into some stalker chick.) Seeing Bill Clinton hug any female other than Hillary always makes me think of Monica Lewinsky. And did you ever notice that reading the Breeze is always fun? By the way, if you notice anything I need to know or notice, don’t forget to email me. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past seven years. She was named “Best Local Columnist” at the 2008 and 2006 Breezy Awards and “Best Local Real Estate Agent” at the 2005 Awards. Judy and her husband John have lived on Tybee since 1983 and own Tybee Island Realty. She can be reached for comment at tybeechick@aol.com.

These snippets are based on a large record book kept in a safe at City Hall containing the handwritten minutes of council meetings and other happenings in the Town of Tybee from 1887 until 1925.  I have tried to find those items that will be of the greatest interest and amusement to Tybee readers of a century later.  I include many names since it was apparent from the start that a lot of Tybee folks of today will know, indeed be related to, some of  these people of yesteryear.

Written by Bernie Goode

In Memory of Anne Monaghan You may think it a bit out of place to dedicate this month’s historical snippets article to my friend Anne Monaghan who died June 5, 2010. But as you will see, she played an important part in the evolution of Tybee’s history. Most of you know that she was a City Councilwoman for two terms. And many will recall her active roles in the Tybee Beautification Association, numerous art programs, church activities, school programs, YEEPIES, Interfaith Hospitality Network (care for homeless families), Tybee Historical Society, etc. She was always the one who said “Yes we can, let’s get started.” But the thing I wanted to talk about was and is her role in, for lack of a better word, activating, the Tybee Memorial Cemetery. And therein lies the historical link. A number of past articles talked about the history and mystery of Tybee’s little cemetery in Memorial Park. The Tybee Beautification Association finished a two-year restoration project in 2005. On dedication day, April 3, 2005, the church pastor I had lined up to do the dedication prayer failed to show up. I turned to Anne who said “Yes I can.” And did. It was during the history research phase of the cemetery project that I learned of the existence of the large book containing the hand-written minutes of council meetings and other documents dating back to the founding of the Town of Tybee in 1887. While looking for

items on the cemetery and the people buried there, it occurred to me that others might be interested in many of the historical matters covered. And the rest is history! – see preamble above. After completion, a few of us thought the newly restored cemetery should be opened for the placement of cremated remains and a memorial wall erected for all wishing to have a record left. Anne and her husband Jim were among those. Why the cemetery was closed remains a mystery. Shortly after the Tybee police chief inventoried the cemetery in 1922 at the mayor’s request, the town suddenly closed the cemetery with no recorded explanation. While stories abound among Tybee old-timers about family members wanting to be buried there, no one knows why the town officials would not allow any more burials after 1922. But the stories include a memory that those officials were adamant. An exception was made in 1952 when the town reluctantly allowed Williams Jennings’ ashes to be interred. Mr. Jennings was instrumental in establishing Memorial Park as a tribute to those Tybee soldiers who gave their lives during World War II. According to a descendant, the city finally agreed to the family pleas and opened the cemetery for that one burial but then closed it again. Thanks to the efforts of Anne and others, the city allowed her ashes to be interred in Memorial Cemetery, the first in 58 years. Also, according to City Manager Diane Schleicher, the draft budget now includes money for a memorial wall. Fitting it is that Anne Monaghan’s plaque will be the first to be mounted on that wall. But others will soon follow, yours truly included. Bernie Goode has been writing for the Breeze for four years. 2010 Tybee Island Children’s Fishing Tournament Well, another ice cream season is in full swing on Tybee and it’s time to hit the river. That’s just what 70 or so children did on June 5th at the 24th annual Tybee Island Children’s Fishing Tournament sponsored by Chimney Creek Marina(The Crab Shack) and Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron 1-A. Every child is a winner at this annual event. Just for signing up children get a free ditty bag full of goodies plus a nice t-shirt. Then it’s time for hot dogs and cold drinks, followed by prizes, gift certificates, savings bonds and trophies. Belinda and Jack asked me to thank all of our local businesses who donated this year to help make this happen for the kids. Thanks for your support; we could not do it without you. Thanks also to Belinda and Jack Flanigan

for hosting this world class event at The Crab Shack. This is Belinda’s baby! The Shack crew did a great job as usual. Pal included, boy was he in a good mood. (Right!) Then it’s the Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron. Thanks guys and gals, you did a wonderful job. From Friday nights ditty bag stuffing, to the measuring of the fish, to the cook out, to the real reward for the whole thing, seeing the children’s faces when their names are called to receive a prize, award or trophy. I also don’t want to leave out the parents, grandparents and friends that take the time out to bring one child, some taking as many as five children fishing. I first took my daughter fishing in this tournament 15 years ago when she was three years old. She got a second place trophy that year with a 13 1/2 inch sea trout (her first trout ever). She’s 18 now and headed to Miami for College, so enjoy it while you have them.

Tybee Road and the Victory Palm Colonnade By Tommy Thompson The majestic palm trees have stood at attention as the silent sentinels of freedom since the early 1920’s, much longer than most of us here today. In Savannah the palm tree lined Victory Drive (originally called Estill Avenue) was created as a living monument to the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that died during, as they called it then, the Great War (WWI). The palm tree lined roadway, living monument, was eventually extended all the way from Victory Drive and Ogeechee Road (to the west) to Tybee Island (to the east). My Dad, who had worked on the building of the Tybee Road, claimed that it was the longest palm tree lined road in the country. I don’t know if that statement was fact or bravado talking, but it was very impressive as a kid to ride along the Tybee Road from the Bull River Bridge to Tybee between the colonnades of palm trees and oleander bushes that lined both sides of the road. Just like the palms you can still see in the median of Victory Drive, Tybee Road had palm trees on either side, spaced thirty feet apart with a white or red oleander bush (as opposed to the azaleas on Victory Drive) centered in between, as they marched all the way to Tybee. Unfortunately, (the collective) we have not shown the proper respect for this living monument and those Americans that gave their lives for our country. What was once a beautiful colonnade of palm trees and oleanders is now a landscaping hodgepodge..! The former uninterrupted majestic palm tree colonnade tribute, to our fallen veterans, 20

Tybee Breeze

is now (with the exception of parts of Victory Drive) an embarrassing unmaintained eyesore along most of its former run. Along the stretch from Bull River to Tybee, you have to look very hard to even see a glimpse of the palm tree/ oleander rhythm of that former colonnade. Next time you are driving into or back from town, squint your eyes when you see either a single palm or oleander bush and imagine what the palm tree / oleander colonnade used to look like. Many of the palm trees were removed and never replaced (on the south side) and the ones that remain on either side have not been maintained and have been allowed to be overgrown by other trees and bushes. Granted, since the 1920’s, there have been roadway widening, relocations, turn-lanes added and etc., so it is not feasible to restore this majestic palm lined tribute to its former glory along the entire run from the Ogeechee Road, however the few miles from Bull River to Tybee could and in this author’s opinion should be restored to its former beauty and purpose. One bit of good news among the blatant neglect of palm tree/oleander maintenance along Tybee Road is that it produced an unplanned benefit. By letting the palms just grow wild a significant nursery of new palms (along the north side of the road) are available for transplanting to fill in the gaps left by road widening and/or neglect. This stretch of Tybee Road from Bull River to Lazaretto Creek is the gateway to our Island and this historic patriotic landscaping should be restored. I am confident that with enough focused public/private involvement we can have Tybee Road restored to the beautiful majestic palm and oleander colonnade that it once was. Any one interested in the restoration of the landscaping of Tybee Road to its former palmlined majesty, please contact me via email or US Mail.

Dear Fran, The doctor told my best friend that she needed to add more veggies, more green stuff, to her diet. When we went out to lunch yesterday, she asked for two extra pickles. I tried to tell her that I didn’t think pickles counted just because they’re green. What do you think? I value your opinion, Pat Strami Dear Pat, I concur. Pickles do not count as veggies. Which is kind of odd, if you think about it, because cucumbers do count. Maybe she could ask for raw pickles next time. Order collards instead, Fran Dear Fran, I like that Vox Populi column in the Savannah paper. Why doesn’t the Breeze have one of those? Wondering, Avid Reader Dear Avid, I thought this column served the same purpose. It’s like a Vox Populi for Tybee. Think of all the nuts who write in and ask stupid questions. If the shoe fits... Fran

Dear Fran, I was looking at the pictures in the night life section of your magazine and noticed that all the people kind of look alike. They all have either a silly grin or a glazed look on their faces. Small gene pool or something? What’s up with that? Curious, Sandy Foote Dear Sandy, First of all, let me say that although we’re a small place, the way people look in those photos has nothing do with our gene pool. Haven’t you ever heard that couples who are married a long time start to look alike? Or that people often resemble their pets? It’s like that here on Tybee. We all hang out together so often that we start to look alike. A lot of us share the same liquid diet also. Join us! Fran Dear Fran, I love the new pedicab service, and it has given me inspiration for a business of my own. What do you think about Pet-a-cab service? I could clean up my old bike, reattach the basket to the handle bars and charge people to take their pets for a ride around the island! What about it? Idea Man Dear Idea, In theory, it’s good. In reality, forget it. I can just imagine somebody’s treasured pooch jumping out of that basket and running away from you. And you know cats are too smart to even get in the basket. You might have some luck with caged parakeets. Think again, Fran Dear Fran, Is it okay if I talk to the squirrels in my neighborhood? The other day one of them was sitting on the porch rail looking at me and I could swear he was thinking the same thing I was. Sincerely, Roe Dent Dear Roe, Yes, siree. Go right ahead and converse with those little critters. However, I’d really like to know what thoughts you were having that you’re so sure that squirrel was having too. Unless it’s something like “I wish I had a peanut and that someone would turn the sprinkler on to cool me off,” you may want to seek professional help. Yours truly, Fran You can write me anytime you like at FranVanFlanders@aol.com

You need: 1 garlic clove minced 1 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 3/4 cup canned crushed tomatoes with puree 4 tbsp. finely chopped fresh basil 1 tbsp. fresh orange juice or more 3/4 cup whole milk ricotta cheese 1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese 2 tsp. finely chopped fresh oregano 12 won ton skins And then; Preheat oven to 400. Cook garlic in butter in a large heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring about one minute. Add tomatoes with puree and half the basil and simmer sauce, uncovered about 20 minutes. Stir in orange juice and salt and pepper to taste. While sauce is cooking, stir together ricotta, parmesan, remaining basil, oregano and salt and pepper to taste. Separate won ton skins and add to a saucepan of salted boiling water, then immediately transfer with a slotted spoon to a shallow dish filled cold water. Spread 1/2 cup of sauce evenly in bottom of a buttered 13 x 9 x 2 inch glass baking dish. Arrange 4 won ton skins, drained briefly on a kitchen towel, in 1 layer on top of the sauce. Divide half of the ricotta mixture evenly among squares in pan and top with 4 more squares, drained briefly. Spoon remaining ricotta mixture evenly on top of squares in pan and top with remaining 4 squares, drained. Spoon several tablespoons of sauce over each stack and bake, uncovered, in middle of oven until bubbling and heated through, about 10 minutes. That’s it! This will make appetizers for 4 or dinner for 2, but if you’re like me you are going to want more. You might go further and add shrimp or crab or mushrooms.... well, you get the picture. Hope you enjoy! Carpaccio! Note: Gold colored shiro miso (the same used for Japanese miso soup; also called light or white soybean paste) is available with ethnic foods at some grocery store or Asian markets.

On May 8, 2010, 46 kids gathered together to participate in the 4th Annual Tybee “DAC” Kids Fishing Tournament at Tybee Island Marina. The day started off with the Captain’s meeting where Dr. Mare Timmons from UGA/Skidaway Marine Institute showed us what some of the fish are eating by dissecting their bellies. Dr. Timmons had brought a shovel head shark that had died at the aquarium. She dissected the shark and it was expecting babies. Sharks give birth to live sharks, no eggs. Inside the shark’s belly was a large whole blue crab. The goodie bags were handed out and with the knowledge of what fish eat the kids were off to fish. It was a hot day, but the fish were biting. At the weigh-in everyone enjoyed the fried shrimp, shrimp puppies, French fries, potato chips and hotdogs. The food was donated by two of our long time supporters, Captain Royce – Lazaretto Creek Seafood for the shrimp and Mike Hosti – Tybee Market IGA for the hotdogs, buns and chips. Also, everyone enjoyed the beautiful ocean themed cake made by Lynn Cowart. After the weigh in, the door prizes were given out and the award ceremony began. This years’ winners are: Age 0 To 6 – Fishing From Dock: Most Fish Caught - 1st Place Winner: Bella Durst; Biggest Fish Caught - 1st Place Winner: Camryn Hill; 2nd Place Winner; Connor Desautels. Burton 4-H Center Tybee Island Activities In Memory of Sgt. Jonathan Peney I cannot remember the first time I officially met Jon, but I believe it was inside the Marriott Hotel on River Street. I was attending a lecture by Fabien Cousteau, and Jon was dropping off his then girlfriend, Kristin, to come hear the lecture with me. He didn’t say much when I first met him, but he was very polite and quietly confident. Kristin had told me all about her love for Jon, and they had fallen in love quickly. She met him while playing volleyball on Tybee Island and he had asked her out to a fancy dinner at 700 Drayton. Kristin kept dating Jon, and one day while I was at the 4-H Center, where Kristin has worked on and off for 6 or more years, I suddenly noticed her engagement ring! I couldn’t believe I had been hanging out with her and hadn’t noticed! She giggled and said that she wasn’t going around making a big deal out of it, but she and Jon would be wed in Greece. So, we sent them off to Greece to start their married life. Kristin kept us updated on Facebook with all of her glorious pictures and happy moments with Jon. The last time I saw Jon was when we were having Kristin’s birthday dinner at Kanpai, and I will never

Happy 1st Birthday Zackary Aiden Speegle! Love, Mommy & Daddy

forget how much sushi that boy put down! I can’t remember exactly how much he ate (it was too much to count), but he probably ate 50 rolls of sushi that night! Kristin and Jon Peney shared a blissful marriage, and were excited about their first anniversary on June 13th of this year. Unfortunately, Kristin didn’t get to celebrate her anniversary with Jon the way she had planned. Jon was suddenly taken from us on June 1st in the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan. I was at work when I found out, and I still haven’t accepted that this beautiful soul is no longer with us. Kristin has been very strong through the loss of her extraordinary husband and was able to honor Jon with a unique funeral that exemplified his life and his willingness to serve his country. All I can do to give tribute to Jon is to now live my life as well as he lived his. Kristin has been amazed and grateful at the outpouring of love she has received from her family and friends, and even strangers, during this time. Every word of encouragement has helped her get through this time of sorrow. If you would like to leave a kind message or word for her or the family, you can visit www. savannahnow.com/obituaries. Follow the link for Sgt. Jonathan K. Peney and view the online guestbook. Rangers Lead the Way!

Sunburn By Jerry Williams, MD

Hi again! Hope everyone benefitted from the information on jellyfish stings last month. This month’s topic, sunburn, is very important, because you CAN enjoy the beach without abusing your skin. Prevention of sunburn is the key. Use of appropriate sunscreens and protective clothing are extremely important to protect your skin from the harm of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. The longterm ramifications of excessive sun exposure without the proper protection can be devastating: early aging and skin cancers being the worst. It has always amazed me that people who seem to be the vainest about their appearance are the sun gods and goddesses. But as they grow older, ever notice how they look a lot older than their peers? You’ve got it! The long-term effects of sun exposure can definitely take their toll on skin softness, complexion and, yes, I’m saying it, increased wrinkles! Combine sun exposure with tobacco abuse and be prepared to look twenty years older than your non-smoking, sun-protecting pals in a hurry! So how do you prevent over exposure? Sun screens and blocks are very effective at allowing many enjoyable hours of beautiful beach time without getting burned. Don’t forget to use a water-resistant product if you plan on enjoying the water. Protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats and those trusty beach umbrellas also will do the trick. And parents please protect your kids! I am so disappointed at the number of children I see at the beach without appropriate sun protection. The American Academy of Dermatology 26

Tybee Breeze

(AAD) recognizes 6 skin categories with Skin Type I always burning easily to skin type VI never burning and essentially sun-insensitive skin. Regardless of where you are in this scheme, the AAD recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 and reapplying it AT LEAST every 2 hours. And remember: don’t just use sunscreen on sunny days. On cloudy days, approximately 80% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays penetrate the clouds and sand reflects 25% of the sun’s rays. For those who don’t always protect themselves appropriately, let’s address treatment of sunburn. The mildest form of sunburn is a first-degree burn. These burns are red, have some peeling and are best treated with topical creams and lotions that moisturize and sooth the skin. These normally heal in a matter of just a few days. Second-degree sunburns are those that blister and can be a medical emergency if a large enough area of the skin is affected. It is best to NOT break open these blisters as this can delay healing and open up routes for infection. With severe second degree burns, and burns associated with headache, chills or fever, medical care should be sought immediately. Remember, every time you burn or tan, you are damaging your skin. This increases your risk of all types of skin cancer and these risks accumulate over a lifetime. So cover up and slather on that SPF! You’ll enjoy Tybee so much more without a bad sunburn! Until next month, be safe and stay healthy! The Beach Doc

Work has finally begun on Tybee Wedding Chapel! The land has been cleared and we are in the process of preparing to relocate the chapel. Lannie and our commercial contractor, Anthony Sapone with Catskill Builders, have outlined the sequence in the rebuilding and relocating of this exciting project.

install a similar color red roof. Next the chapel will be lifted and located on the new foundation. Then we will add a commercial caterer kitchen plus half bath to the rear of the building with access from the handicap ramp and/or from inside the chapel. There will also be an addition on the front of the building for the bride’s changing suite with 2 half baths, the groom’s room will have a wet bar and half bath. The large front porch will be accessed by a double Victorian stairwell that embraces the laurel oaks. There will also be a handicap ramp that serves as access for the chapel or caterer’s kitchen. Lannie and I appreciate the ongoing support for this important project that will help define Tybee Island as a wedding destination. Our projected completion date is around the first of October if all goes well. We look forward to seeing you while work is being completed. Thank you for your time and attention. With best wihses, I am Stacye C. Jarrell, Tybee Wedding Chapel www.tybeeweddingchapel.com - 912.786.9099

The first thing that had to happen was removal of the roof and bracing the building in preparation for the move. Tybee Wedding Chapel’s steeple was too tall to remain an original part of the building because of Tybee’s 35 foot height restriction. It has been taken apart and we hope to use it in its entirety on the property in the future. The Chapel will be relocated temporarily on the adjoining lot next to its permanent home at 1112 First Street/U. S. Hwy 80. If you are looking for the new location it is across the street from Doyle Landscaping and Seaside Sisters. When the building reaches the adjoining lot it will be lowered so that we can have the new roof (built to code) rebuilt. We plan to Tybee Breeze

Experience Luxury, Oceanfront Style By Stacye and Lannie Jarrell Wow! Have Lannie and I have been busy! Over the past few months it has been our pleasure to entertain celebrities that are recognized on a national level. We have been blessed to share our island with these wonderful Guests who work as ambassadors for our island. Lisa Wu Hartwell visited us during the Irish Festival weekend in March. Lisa is the lead actress of Real Housewives of Atlanta with 30 million viewers on Bravo Network. She came to Tybee after completing a movie with Nicholas Cage. She stars in her next film this fall with Robert Deniro . Lisa was accompanied by her handsome husband, Ed Hartwell, a former Falcon and Ravens football player and actor in his own right. They enjoyed Tybee so much that Ed and Lisa returned mid May with his mother, Ruby, and other family members to celebrate Ed’s birthday on Tybee. They generously gave their time for photographs and interviews promoting Tybee nationally as a secret eco friendly/celebrity/ athlete getaway. As the result of their time spent on Tybee we have gotten national press in areas that we had never reached previously. Ed Hartwell works tirelessly with his foundation teaching the dangers of childhood obesity which is a real problem in America. Ovie Mughelli (mu ha le) brought his family to explore Tybee. Ovie is a full back for the Falcons. He launched his Eco Foundation for Children on Tybee with full press in attendance. Ovie has 2 summer camps for children and his message is that being eco friendly starts at home. It is as simple as pick up the trash, turn off lights when leaving a room or change the light bulbs to more energy efficient ones. His visit to Tybee was picked up by Athlete Quarterly, Men’s Travel, Ecorazzi (an Internet site for

“going green”) and he was the second voted most influential eco friendly athlete in the world per Team Treehugger, Worldwide. Ovie plans to return to Tybee during the summer to enjoy our wonderful Southern hospitality after his camp in late June. It was a pleasure spending time with him, his parents and sisters. Ruby Gettinger from The Style Network loves Tybee! She and her trainers, Drew and Shazi Edmonds, love Tybee! Ruby and her buffed trainers have offered to participate in our upcoming fitness event, Tybee Throws A Fit www.tybeethrowsafit.com on July 2, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. Ruby will lead her Fat Girl Dance. We hope many of her fans will join us on Tybee. This is an island wide morning fitness event (8-11am) celebrating Tybee Island’s being the healthiest beach in America for the prior year. A new city will be named on July 1, 2010. Our island is going to show how many ways one town can enjoy being active. Michael Banks, an Olympic trainer, of Body by Banks will be on Tybee July 2 on the Pavilion with professional trainers to “help Tybee workout”. We will be his prototype city for his ongoing promotions. His fitness video launches worldwide in Walmart the weekend of July 3. Tybee Island will be photographed with water aerobics at Rivers End Campground, kids doing all types of activities at the YMCA/ gym. Sea Kayak of Georgia is launching kayaks at 8:00 a.m. demonstrating “rolls”, canoeing and much more. We will have yoga, pilates, middle school cheerleaders, bicyclists, skaters, walkers, runners, tennis players, soccer players, the “doggie promenade” will be in the Jaycee Park, surfers, kite boarding (weather permitting) or stand up paddling and bocce ball on the beach. Everyone on Tybee is being asked to participate. I believe that we are going to have a wonderful summer and hope that everyone is safe. Let’s try to be patient with each other in this heat and busy season. Our prayers are with the Gulf Coast. Everyone hopes they get control of that oil spill asap. Thank you and we will see you at the beach! Oceanfront Cottage Rentals, LLC invites you to enjoy true Southern Hospitality in one of our gorgeous homes while visiting our wonderful and unique island. GREETINGS TYBEE! Did you notice the headline? That’s right! Tybee is now officially a Georgia Better Hometown Community! It is wonderful that we have all been able to work together to make this dream a reality. Congratulations to all and I look forward to working with the City of Tybee, business owners and residents as we continue to make improvements with Economic Development within the context of Historic Preservation! The Board of Directors and Committee members have been instrumental in this process and we will continue working with the community to maintain the quality of life through a healthy business corridor and to enhance the cultural experience while preserving this barrier island’s heritage. Last month’s Third Thursdays on Tybee was a hit! Wonderful “jazzy” music by the VIGUBA TRIO filled the roundabout area and encouraged dancing to the delight of many. After the magical music performance, those entertained took in dining, shopping and strolling to end a wonderful evening downtown Tybee.

Another item of (Jan Spillane) particular interest for those who love to share their knowledge of the Island is a pilot program we are starting. “Tybee Island Information Providers” is an

ambassador program made up of local volunteers that assist visitors with questions about parking, shopping, dining, and sightseeing activities. This program is wonderful for socialization and youth can even earn Community Service hours! T. I. I. P. volunteers will work a three-hour shift, one time per week during peak season between 14th and 17th Street east side of Butler Ave. An orientation will be held shortly so call me if you can help! Your knowledge of the island and passion to help is appreciated! Remember, while you are out enjoying this island paradise, “Buy Local Tybee”. “Roaches” American Cockroach As we move into our spring season we will tend to see our native occasional invaders, mostly. The American Cockroach as they are the most common in our area of outside and inside house pests. (Slang name – Palmetto bug). They can harbor in damp warm areas outdoors and are known to fly. These insects are mainly night feeders and are attracted to moist areas and fermenting food. The small ray of light you see in the cracks and crevice passage places of the home such as windows and especially doorways in the day coming through is also the light these insects see from outside at night and is a perfect drawing card for them to have access into the home. Plumbing chases and electrical openings are also an avenue of travel. Reducing cluttered boxes, stored paper products and proper caulking around structural areas, also repairing water leakage places as well as plumbing, electrical fixtures and wall voids should be properly sealed with grout, caulking, or common sealant foam. Another prevention is to replace older weather stripping around doorways which can be a number one point of access.

German Cockroach German Roaches can be ½ to 5/8 inches in diameter. They are the most common in the United States. Their nesting habits are mainly in the kitchen and bathroom areas as these are convenient water source places. They also are attracted to warmer areas such as – water heaters, phones, electrical outlets, stoves and dishwashers. They can also frequent refrigerator pan holds, furniture, trash areas and anywhere of the like where food or moisture is available. These insects are known to be travelers as in bags, boxes and used appliances. They can travel in

any complex through wall voids and plumbing openings. In many situations we use glue boards sparsely in kitchens and commercial businesses as a monitoring tool to keep in check the activity in-between visits for evaluation. Gel, paste or dry baits have been very effective in the control of these insects. Moist – hot conditions can break down the application of any pesticide residual in a short time. Thus a chosen formulation should be used. I read sometime ago about Asian Cockroaches that are very similar to German roaches but known to harbor outside. I encountered a situation of this type recently nesting in an area laden with pine straw and had started to travel into a nearby storage unit. They are treated accordingly as bait was not formidable for this kind. The treatment was successful for control and none have been spotted since.

Oriental Cockroach Oriental roaches are another outside pest and are very abundant in secluded areas such as basements, meter boxes and drains. They are also occasional invaders in our area of the home. They, as the American Cockroach, can occur inside when precipitation has been an issue. The male breed is similar in appearance of the American Cockroach. The females are light brownish red and appear to have a banded shield on their back.

Smokey Brown Cockroach They are typically an outdoor pest mainly found in our southern states and as far west as Texas. They can be found in wood piles, flower plants, oak and palm trees and any vacant structure. They are attracted to light and are known to be strong fliers.

Brown Banded Cockroach Brown banded cockroaches are better suited in a more dry environment unlike the German cockroach. They prefer dark crack and crevice areas and can harbor throughout many places of any structural abode, unlike so many other types of cockroaches that frequent a more confined space. Note: As pine straw, woodchips, straw, mulch and rock enhance the exterior of our homes these factors can be retention for moisture in which most of these insects need to survive and breed in. This can be an important outside issue that should be addressed when administering a general pesticide inside as well as outside of the home for prevention to control and alleviate their preserve.

Until next time - Let’s work the bugs out! Johnny “the Bugman” Herald , Cox Pest Control 32

As we welcome this hot, hot summer, there’s no better place to be than Tybee Island! Everyone seems to be very busy from hotels, vacation rentals, bed and breakfast inns, restaurants, shops, marinas, and attractions! Our traffic count at the Tybee Visitor Center has had some record breaking numbers and we’re sure these numbers will continue now that school is out! The Georgia State Welcome Center along with the Savannah Visitor Centers are experiencing record crowds also which is great for everyone. The Beach Bum Parade and Memorial Day Weekend brought out lots of folks for all the festivities! The Thursday before Beach Bum, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce had its “Taste of Downtown” held in Reynolds Square. Several Tybee folks ventured downtown for this great event and the food was great! The first EVP Volleyball Tournament held the Saturday after Beach Bum was a success and they are looking to return next year. The Small Business Council Trade Show and Banquet was held in June also with a great turnout at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront! This is always a great event! The Tourism Leadership Council hosted its June luncheon and annual golf tournament at the Club at Savannah Harbor. Even though the

temperature was a little warm the food was great and the tournament was lots of fun! Our own Savannah CVB team headed by Joe Marinelli along with Bill McKay, Larry Browder, and Ben Wilder had a bit of “tacky” going on with their flowered shirts and madras/ plaid shorts! They were quite the fashion statement out on the golf course! The Tybee Island Tourism Council was well represented at The Pentagon in May with Mills Marketing out of Atlanta where 20,000 - 22,000 people attended. Jeff Mills said the crowd was very receptive and had lots of questions about our Georgia Coast. Mills Marketing will also be representing Tybee at the AAA Showcase in Nashville, TN in July. Lindsay will be attending the Southeast Tourism Society’s (STS) Marketing College July 2530 in Dahlonega, GA. This is a three year program where tourism industry professionals from throughout the South meet for a week of intense classes and networking opportunities. Lindsay is in her second year at the Marketing College. This year’s class topics include: Understanding the Heart of Your Visitor and Connect it to the Soul of Your Destination, Breaking Into the International Market Without Spending a Lot of Dollars and Creating Events Outside the Norm. Lindsay and Vicky will be attending the Georgia Governor’s Conference in Athens, GA this August and look forward to bringing back lots of new information on improving Tybee’s tourism. Don’t forget about “Tybee Throws A Fit” coming up July 2nd and sponsored by Oceanfront Cottage Rentals. It will take place from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM and will feature Ruby Gettinger and Denny Starr of “The Ruby Show”, TRAIN ME 24/7 owners, Shazia and Drew Edmonds, Body by Banks.com creator and Olympic Trainer, Michael Banks. Come out and get your “FIT”on!!! Don’t forget about the fireworks on July the 3rd! Have a great Tybee Day and have a safe July 4th! Don’t forget to “Keep Tybee Tidy”! Please feel free to call us at 912-786-5444 or come by our office above the Tybee Island Visitor Center anytime. We want your feedback! Have a great Tybee day and get ready for SUMMER! By Tammy Smith Tybee Sea Turtle Project Coordinator Sea Turtle season is in full swing in Georgia. At the time of writing this article, there are 480 sea turtle nest along the Georgia Barrier Islands. Majority of the nest are from loggerheads, but four were deposited by leatherbacks. Tybee has two nests so far this season. The crawl of the first nest was found by volunteer, Shannon Marino in an unusual par t of the beach. The mom decided to lay the nest in a high traffic area in front of Fannies. We have not had a crawl in this area in several years. Needless to say, the nest was relocated to a more suitable and darker spot at 8th Street. The second nest was discovered just north of the 13th Street Crossover. Volunteer, Sybil Kirkland, located this classic crawl. The nest was left in place, but will need volunteer assistance upon hatchling time due the closeness of the Pier and the south end lights! There is an area near the East Gate Crossover (Sugar Shack entrance for those less familiar with Tybee’s Fort history), I have marked off as an unknown. This means I could not locate the nest cavity with eggs, so the Sea Turtle Project volunteers will monitor this area until mid July. It is possible this unknown area could be a nest after all. Little Tybee has been quite busier than Tybee. There have been a total of seven crawls on Little Tybee, with three being actual nest. Unfortunately, one of the three nests was completely lost to raccoons and ghost crabs. The predators feasted on approximately 87 sea turtle eggs. Sadly there were no eggs left in the nest cavity to relocate. If you visit Little Tybee you will notice that the nests are covered with a white, plastic screen. The screen helps keep the raccoons out of the nest cavity during the incubation period which last between

50 and 75 days. I do keep extra materials stored on Little Tybee, please don’t mistake this for trash and remove it. “Please don’t run over the turtles”. “Please move turtles from the road”. When traveling along the Tybee Road, I am sure that you noticed those signs. Although very clever, and many people thought that I was responsible; the Sea Turtle Project was not involved with the placement of the signs. In fact, I am not sure who deserves the credit. As much as I want all turtles to remain safe, I do caution people about stopping on Highway 80 to move a turtle from the road. This is a very busy road, non-emergency stopping is very dangerous to you and others traveling along the highway. The signs on the Tybee Road lead me into the next discussion, the difference between a Diamondback Terrapin, the type of turtle that frequently crosses Highway 80 and a sea turtle, which nest on Tybee Beach. The first difference to point out is the size of each species. Diamondbacks are much smaller, measuring in at about four to nine inches in length. A loggerhead sea turtle measures about 36 inches in length. Diamondbacks weigh less than two pounds; a loggerhead can weigh as much as 250 pounds. One certainly would not run over a sea turtle of that size or much damage would be done to your car! The Diamondback turtle lives in brackish (less salty) water found in the marshes around our area, although they are aquatic animals, they tend to bask in the heat of the sun for long periods of time. All sea turtle species, including loggerheads, live their lives completely in the ocean, periodically coming to the surface to breath. Sea turtles are more suited for swimming with their front and fore flippers gliding them through the water, a diamondback has webbed feet, with strong claws, assisting with crawling in and out of the marshes. Both species mate in the spring with nesting taking place during the summer months. Female sea turtles will only nest on beaches along the coast; terrapins will nest along marshes, estuaries and lagoons. The average nest clutch for a diamondback terrapin is 8-12 eggs, a sea turtle will lay between 80 and 120 eggs per clutch. In the Georgia, both of the turtle species are protected by law, it is illegal to keep either a diamondback or sea turtle as a pet. Visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center for further information on both species. Currently the center has a diamondback terrapin exhibit with two terrapins, and is waiting on a sea turtle hatchling to be placed in the new sea turtle exhibit. For more information on sea turtles or the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center! The center is located at 1510 Strand Avenue, Tybee Island, GA 31328. If you wish to donate, please call (912)786-5917, or visit the website at www. tybeemsc.org. If you are interested in volunteering with the Sea Turtle Project, please contact the Center or send me an email at turtletammy@bellsouth.net.

Happy 3rd Anniversary Lighthouse Pizza If you’ve been on Tybee for long, you’ve seen Lighthouse Pizza’s colorful car with “Free Delivery” in the logo, but when you walk into the restaurant on Tybrisa Street you’ll find there’s far more to it than pizza delivery. There’s the newly redecorated dining room, which offers a cool relaxing place to take a break from the heat. There’s the Beer Garden patio, filled with plants and recently outfitted with mister fans, favorite seating for families and groups. There’s the extensive menu, with ribs smoked on site, pulled pork barbecue, a variety of sandwiches, salads and wings. Pizza is the star of the menu, of course. Lighthouse Pizza makes their own “Tybee Dough” fresh in the store every day, with a selection of more than 30 toppings, cheeses and sauces to choose from. You can start with a cheese pizza and choose your own toppings, select a specialty pizza with popular combinations, or choose a Signature pizza such as Chicken Alfredo or Meatball.

A-Team:

Well, the preview for the movie Predators was spectacular! As far as the movie: Meh. Having grown up on the A-Team, I have watched them save good people from bad for many years. The original team is irreplaceable. However, Liam Neeson, as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper, as Face, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, as B.A. Baracus, and Sharlto Copley, as Mad Murdock, do an admirable job of living up to their predecessors. But they just don’t quite get there. It is a decent prequel to the series: Starting out with the team first meeting each other in Baghdad to recover stolen money plates, they proceed to kick butt and then get their own kicked by a devious C.I.A. agent named “Lynch” (played by an absolutely fantastically fun and evil Patrick Wilson). Throw in Brian Bloom as a sadistic bad guy, and hey, you got yourself a blow em up action flick. Don’t forget Jessica Biel (looking better than any woman has a right to) as Agent Sosa. With all of that being said: It’s an alright movie. I recommend watching this from the comfort of your own couch. Don’t pay $24 for the DVD. Wait for cable and a rainy day. I give this movie 1 bottle of Bacardi 151 (because Bradley Cooper has got the best smile ever), 1 bottle of Meyers Dark (because I do so love it when a plan comes together), and 3 bottles of Castillo (because I so wanted to be watching Predators instead).

High Road to China:

I love me some Tom Selleck. It’s got nothing to do with the mustache, I promise! Released in 1983, this movie is just a happy happy joy joy feel good time. Set in 1928ish, Tom plays Patrick O’Malley, a drunken lush of a pilot (an Irish drunk? Who’d a thunk it?) who has the (mis) fortune to meet Evie Tozer (Bess Armstrong). Evie is a flapper/heiress/strong willed/ pilot/crazy girl who is looking for her father. Father being Wilford Brimley as Brad Tozer. Straight adventure from there! The two of them hook up and love ever after. Sigh. Flying to China to rescue the dad, Tom and Bess beat the bad guys, win the war and live happily ever after. Be still my beating heart. I give this movie 5 bottles of Rumpy (because it’s just good fun).

By George Walker Commander Happy Fourth of July! It’s great to be an American. Enjoy the holiday and remember what it’s all about. Another great reason to be proud of who we are. Father’s Day steak dinners went well. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal and we hope really enjoyed giving families an opportunity to thank Dad for being Dad. As usual it took a lot of effort to make this a success and thanks go out to all of the Legionnaires, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion members who helped prepare the meals, serve the meals, and wash the dishes and clean-up afterwards. It was definitely a group operation. Our meeting on July 12th will be for the installation of officers of the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion. We have had a very good year for 2009/10. With the men and women we have at the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion there is every expectation that the coming year will be even better. As always I ask that you remember our Tybee Island “Circle of Freedom” War Memorial.

American Legion Post 154 Tybee Island, GA Currently we are working to raise the money for a brick sidewalk from the monument out to Butler Avenue. Please help if you can. Bingo is on Friday’s at 8:00pm. Cards go on sale at 7:15pm. Horseshoes will be Saturday evenings at 7:00pm. Both events are open to the public and everyone is invited to participate. We continue to look for new members. If you’re interested in the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary or Sons of the Legion call the Post (786-5356) for information. The Legion and Auxiliary meet on the second Monday of the month with social hour (and food) starting at 6:00pm and the meeting at 7:00pm. The Sons of the Legion meet on the third Monday at 7:00pm. As always, Linda or Patti will have the canteen open at 5:00pm every day.

Auxiliary Unit #154 Hello Auxiliary Members and Breeze readers. The entire Auxiliary would like to extend extreme gratitude and good wishes to Lisa McKenzie, Past First Vice President and Jo Young, Past Second Vice President for your leadership in moving that Auxiliary forward. New officers will be installed at the July 12 meeting. They are Kaye Dowell, President; Liz Lee, First Vice President; Marlene Tomlin, Second Vice President; Lynn Marston, Treasurer; Belinda Flanigan, Secretary; Nancy LaFavor, Chaplain; Vivian Austin, Historian and Lillian Brown, Sgt at Arms. I look forward to a great year of serving with you. In June, the Post hosted a steak dinner for Father’s Day and it was yummy! Thank you to those who served and worked so hard to make this event great. I would like to share with the readers some of the

events and causes that we support on a regular basis. The Auxiliary provides bananas to the nursing home on a monthly basis. This seems like a small contribution but it has a great impact. Last month, we made a contribution to the Fresh Air Home to help them with their programs for underprivileged children. We have continued “Soldier Boxes” going out each month to soldiers that are deployed. There is a collection box at the Post if you wish to contribute supplies for these boxes. We welcome you participation in any and all projects throughout the coming year. Members, please remember that your dues of $25 are now due for 2010-2011. We want to reach 100% goal again this year. You can turn in your dues to any officer. As always, we have activities going on around the Independence Day celebration. Have a safe and healthy July.

Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports May - June First, I would like to thank everyone who purchased a Boston Butt at our Memorial weekend fundraiser. We sold out in record time, and very much appreciate all of your support. We apologize to the few folks who got stuck with a ticket after the entire product was gone. We wish you to know we will honor those tickets next year, or you can see the member that sold them to you and we will issue a refund. Along with the rest of the island we were shocked and saddened by the accident that weekend that took one of our own. Our hearts go out to the Piper Family in this horrific nightmare. There will be a Fish Fry fundraiser July 10, at the American Legion to benefit Hanna and Trey at 1:00 pm-until. Silent auction, entertainment and more. Food served from 1:00 till 7:00 pm. J.L. A cougar is an older woman who is primarily attracted to significantly younger men (Sex is optional). You can be a member of Tybee’s Cougar Society... Are you a woman 40 years of age or older who enjoys the company of young men? The tenyear age difference seems to be an unspoken but accepted minimum between partners. Typically, cougars flirt with young men. Some cougars are less interested in a relationship than

arm candy for the evening. Cougars enjoy the fact that they are physically appealing to men who are considered to be in the prime of their virility. A cougar may be married or unmarried. Secure husbands, can tolerate harmless flirtations, although the term ‘cougar’ comes from the biggame predatory cat of the same name. The cougar connection also may allude to the wearing of animal print clothing by older and more aggressive women. An early example of the cougar phenomenon was seen in the groundbreaking film The Graduate, in which middle-aged Mrs. Robinson (Ann Bancroft) seduces fresh-out-of-college Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman). Real-life cougar relationships include Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher (15 years), Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins (12 years), and Barbara Hershey & Naveen Andrews (21 years). Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Sometimes the only way to succeed is by murdering the entire board of directors. You like to think that you’re finally getting your financial affairs into good order. May the tax be with you. Leo (July 23 - August 22) Not a good time to go forth and conquer. Try going fifth, and hover in the background. Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Your lack of modesty will cause you problems. Nobody knows the trouble you’ve seen. Except for Bob, that is. You know - the quiet neighbor, with the binoculars? Libra (September 22 - October 22) You may hear good news from an excitable old lady who may turn out to be drunk. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) All the colors in the rainbow will come out to play on other people’s faces. You may be diagnosed with flu at some point. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) It’s ok to spill the wine, if you feel you really have to. When there’s work to be done, there’s no shame in procrastination. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Back in school when people would bully you about your hair and possibly jacket, you swore you would have your vengeance. Make today that day. The older you get the more you’re starting to realize that everyone else is an idiot. By Joni Woodcock Peace, love and harmony to Tybee Island. This month, I hope to be ecumenical, non-denominational, semi-dysfunctional, and nonpollitallica!!! Whoops, I was thinking about Metallica back in the day when they, too, were still cool. What the hell is happening on Tybee??? I protest!! Why can’t we just get back to being freakycoolweirdquirkyTybeeFREE??? REALLY??? Back in the REAL world... Azi, Wren, a n d M i r came in to visit us at the POO. Earlier last month, the POO had the band “Rolling in the Hay” in from Birmingham, AL. Brian has been booking some really good music lately, so come and check it out!!! Kim and Henry’s pool party was a refreshing change from the summer heat. The party reportedly lasted for several days! Thanks for your hospitality! Gloria, the “Bird Lady,” celebrated birthday 85!!! This was the only photo I could take without her middle finger being extended in a friendly greeting! Kim and Harmony were sizzling hot at Top Sail, the new restaurant adjacent to Café Loco. My friend and I had the soft shell crab sandwich and it was melt in your mouth delicious and the view is awesome! Harmony’s sister Joy is driving for the CRAB CAB now and we welcome her! She is very personable and is a big plus for Joe’s team. Remember, the CRAB CAB is cheaper than the JUDGE!!!

Margaret, family and friends were celebrating her niece’s birthday at Bernie’s. I had fish and grits and I think I

am getting addicted to grits! MMMMMmmmmm! Hillary was captured live on the stripper pole at the Sand Bar. Jen was bartending and a good time was had by all as far as we remember! It was Kim’s one year on Tybee Anniversary at the Wind Rose. It’s a tough life, but someone’s gotta do it, right guys?

Lisa and the Extra Terrestrial ham it up for the camera! When you are out bar hopping on 16th St., stop by and check out Holly B.’s Collectibles. She has some cool stuff at reasonable prices. Mickey is going to be a grandfather. . .Again!!! Mandy is six months along. When the Lord said “Be fruitful and multiply,” Mickey got busy! Glen and Nalene came by my house the other evening with fresh veggies from their garden. Glen appears to be wondering if this

really came from the Jolly Green Giant. Thanks, guys! And then there was ROMA...leave the cucumbers alone!!!

Frances and her grandson Jack were at Marlin Monroe’s cooling off after a hot game of basketball. Jenny had fresh mint at the bar and the mint juleps looked fantastic. Roma asked for a fan at Marlin Monroe’s and this is what yout faithful court brought her.

Chris is running for town Boss. He reminds me of the guy from “Cool Hand Luke.” He is pictured here with Special Agent “Q”. Romeo, Buddy and Mike said, “Let them eat cake,” and they did. It was Curtis’ birthday party at Doc’s and all his friends were there.

Jason and Danny were caught playing Corn Hole after midnight. If you don’t understand the concept of corn holing, just ask someone from Ohio! Angie and Bubba (a.k.a. the parents of Lacy) were at Bennie’s having a cocktail. Bubba gets the “Blindfolded by Dental Floss” award for the month. This brings me around to the Tybee Drunkenese word of the month which is Cerveza. Ask your doctor about Cerveza. Side effects include dizziness, blurred vision, poor judgment, nakedness, stickiness and confusion. If you experience this condition for more than four hours, don’t call anyone. You won’t remember it anyway!!! If you have any events that need to be covered, contact the BREEZE. Good, Bad or Indifferent, we will be there!!!
