beer cans, cigarette lighters/butts, flip-flops, sunglasses, coke bottles and Sand-a-rella’s shoe…! I like to walk on the beach on the mornings, when the tide is out, and never fail to return home without a bag full of “beach trash”. If you’ve ever had to chase little ones around on the beach and keep up with all of their sand toys, you can understand how some of these trash treasures, like little plastics shovels, may get lost in the surf and left behind. However, beer cans, glass bottles (what are they doing on the beach anyway…?); plastics of all description, cigarette lighters and butts, etc., etc., etc. are the unmistakable signature of the “beach slob”. You may have also seen the signatures of their relatives, the “Tybee Road slob”, the “South End parking lot slob”, the “North Beach parking lot slob”, but I digress. As with any problem to be solved we need to know the: who, what, where, when, why and how….? The who we know “beach slobs”, the what we know “beach trash”, the where we know “North Beach, the when we know “everyday”, the why is the real unknown here and the how is somewhat immaterial…! So all we need to know is why would someone make a decision to throw beer cans, cigarette lighters, plastic and glass bottles, dirty diapers, etc. on the beach, as opposed to taking it home with them or putting it in a trash can. Now I’m sure arguments can be made for both “nature” or “nurture” as the root cause; maybe it’s a recessive gene, an extra chromosome, a virus… or maybe, they were all raised by wolves in “Sloberbia”. The Mayor and City Council could petition for a grant to commission a study. But, by a stroke of luck, among the “beach trash”, I found “Sand-a-rella’s” shoe. Now work with me here, there is a chance that “Sand-a-rella” is the off-spring of the “beach slobs”, so if we locate “Sand-arella then maybe we can identify the “beach slobs” and then ask them to explain the “why”. Ok, let’s get started, round up all of the children on the beach with one slipper and have her try this one on, oh and one more clue “Sand-a-rella” may be with a woman with only one black flip-flop and no sun glasses. Hello Tybee and Happy October! The Tybee Island Tourism Council has been busy with our new Vacation Planner for 2012 and we are very excited about the new look! We’ve added an extended events page, some new pictures, enhanced the map and added some new listings! There’s also a great new cover! In September, The Tybee Island Tourism Council attended the Georgia Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Macon! I’ll tell you folks, people love them some Tybee around our state! We were well received to say the least! The speakers and seminars were very informative and also learning about how different areas of the state market their destinations. The last night’s event was a BBQ at “The Big House” which is where the Allman Brothers and many friends lived! It’s a great museum now! If you’re an Allman Brothers fan, you need to check it out! The Tybee Island Tourism Council wants to take this opportunity to thank the Tybee Police Department, Tybee Fire Department, Ocean Rescue, Parking Services,

Tybee Wedding Chapel has been really busy for the past five months. We have completed 21 beautiful weddings; several fund raisers, a major Grand Opening and much more! Lannie and I are thankful every day that we chose Ray Anaya to be our Event Director. He works very hard with the brides, wedding planners and caterers to make each wedding and reception a special experience. Ray has accomplished something that we never dreamed of...The Knot has posted five - Five Star reviews for our chapel and every review has personally mentioned how helpful and thoughtful Ray has been every step of the way to make sure that everyone has a wonderful experience. Ray reached out to his co-workers at Oceanfront Cottage Rentals to assist in his wedding world. He asked Carla Michael to be his assistant at Tybee Wedding Chapel along with Kim Dorsey. These ladies work with Ray to make sure that the bride understands what she can and cannot do and how to best utilize the chapel for an outstanding event. We have been very fortunate that most brides and their families now consider staying on Tybee to be “cool” during their destination wedding stay. This has brought business to Tybee in so many ways. Most brides have a wedding web site and list lodging, restaurants and shops on Tybee as part of their suggestions and recommendations for the invited Guests. This information helps the wedding Guests feel comfortable about their upcoming visit and think more seriously about staying on Tybee rather than in Historic Savannah. We have one bride whose grandmother announced that the week of her granddaughter’s wedding was going to be the family reunion and everyone had better show upon Tybee Island for the week. How great is that? Don’t forget about the Teddy Bear Tea party hosted by Suzanne Painter on December 11th at the chapel. This is going to be a fun family event and very memorable for the young artist. The chapel is available for Christmas parties or other group or corporate events. We have not had our first Sweet Sixteen party. I can’t wait! Thank everyone on Tybee for their ongoing support of the Tybee Wedding Chapel. Locals have been a tremendous help in promoting our young business in so many ways. Lannie and I look forward to seeing you during Pirate’s Fest and Halloween on Tybee. Life in the Slow Lane By: John O’Neill
Well, it’s election time on Tybee once again. This one is going to be a bit different it would seem. We will be electing a mayor and the top three council winners for four year terms, while the fourth, fifth, and sixth place finishers will serve for two years. This means that we will still have a city election every two years, but in 2013 we will only be filling three seats with nothing else on the ballot. We will have to wait and see how this will affect turnout. But let’s talk about this one coming up next month. There’s no question that all eyes are going to be on the race for mayor. The political grapevine is buzzing with great anticipation as to how the three candidates are going to “split” up the vote. At this point, it’s anybody’s guess. Shirley has always made a very strong showing. Jason has a loyal following, and Dick is the alternative to business as usual. We shall see. But, there seems to be more of a buzz that this election is turning into a referendum on the current city manager. This could change the dynamics quite a bit. Ole Slo is not making any predictions this time around. I will, however, point out what so many candidates from the past know all too well: You just can’t trust the voters. They will eat your Bar-B-Q, drink your beer, and then kick you to the curb on Election Day. Such is the nature of this popularity contest. Let me say in all seriousness: I applaud each and every person who has offered to serve. It’s a thankless job but somebody has to step up and be counted. See you at the polls!

Notes from the Palace… Things around here have been increasing in activity since Susie was named Queen of the Pirates Festival. Susie has asked people NOT to address as “Her Highness” but some people insist. Stuart still shows her the respect due her position, but always has for the last twenty years. We are Tybee’s Chair Brigade, here to march in this parade! Here come the girls!! A while back, Joey Burel saw the DoDah Parade on TV. Marching in it were a bunch of guys wearing suits and doing drills with briefcases. An idea was born......... 2011 Pirate Fest marks Tybee’s Beach Chair Brigade’s third year! Marching in our sixth parade, L to R-Back row: Ritajane, MaryEllen, Sallie, Gina, we have grown from Patty, Joey, Beth; Middle: Jennifer, Twila, Carolyn, a dozen gals to thirty Juli, Chris, Debby; Seated: Katherine, Karen, Cappy, Linda, Vicki very enthusiastic brigadiers. Practicing twice a week since July, we are more prepared than ever to awe our audiences along the route. The first parade was quite an experiment. Twelve ladies decided to get together and see if we could pull it off. With the help of the Y staff, we got a choreographer/dance instructor, Kathleen Pyrch. She had high hopes for us, and also many reservations. We had very little experience in dance or marching. In fact, for most, none at all, but we were determined. Kathleen taught us a simple routine to the Beach Boys Surfin’ Safari. Our uniform bikini cover-

ups are still a reflection of that dance, leopard printed! We practiced, at most, ten times. Most of the time we were not all there. And then it was parade day! We waited to line up along Solomon. We were so nervous and excited. Everyone was complimenting our cover-ups. Nice folks on 2nd let us use their bathroom. We snapped lots of photos and then we were off. We performed our routine in front of a small crowd at MacElwees and they went nuts. That’s when we knew it was going to be just fine. We would pull it off. We were still nervous, until the rain came, in buckets. We were now the wet T-shirt brigade. But the crowd stayed. It seemed that no one left the parade route. As we marched in the rain people kept cheering. We were so proud to be in the parade for all those soaking wet people! For Pirate’s Fest, our 6th parade, we have a bunch of new girls. We have added umbrellas for our injured who still want to be in the parade. Two of our own, Gina & Sallie, do our choreography. Our normal cadence caller, Pickney (and unofficial greeter down on the route) cannot be with us for this parade, but we have a husband filling in. Our music is rocking loud because of Roadie Sam who doubles as our videographer. And our driver/cheerleader is Charles. We always stop and celebrate our accomplishment at Fannie’s, a tradition! Come by after the parade and see us for pictures and autographs! We also party and watch Sam’s video at Marlin Monroe’s, another BCB tradition! That is where we welcome gals interested in joining us! Anyone interested? And last but not ever least, our (not so low so we can get out of them) beach chairs are ordered especially for the BCB from Christy’s on Tybrisa/16th. In fact, the people at Christy’s are definitely our greatest fans! Thanks to Mr. Marion and the girls!! See ya along the parade route! Tybee’s BCB, We march we drill we dance with chairs! We’re blonde, brunette, with some gray hairs!

Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports By Joey Solomon Public Information Officer
August - September All Quiet. We have had no called rescue missions. Taps Past Skipper Steve Hendricks was laid to rest Sept 12, 2011. Steve was a huge part of this community. Many may not be aware of how he quietly served his country and community. His Legacy lives on in his children all of whom I am proud to call “friends.” As a Retired Fire Chief of Tybee, and years spent in the National Guard… his service to OUR organization may not be as well known. Steve was a workhorse at EVERY event, and worked his way up to Skipper in 1986. At our last meeting (on the 13th) we all remembered the good times and told our favorite “Uncle Steve” stories. I asked everyone to look for any pictures that I may add to this article and to please let me know quickly. (only 2 days till deadline). Four of us were all frantically looking for the same picture….and have yet to find one. Although this one is close (And features my dad on the right) we were unable to find “The Shot” we all were looking for. So…. I will attempt to literally paint it for you: Mid Eighties…Could have been any day around Thanksgiving…On a Island 5 miles south of Tybee… Morning, Mid-day, or Evening… There is “Uncle Steve” with his thick cheesy mustache, smiling while standing under a huge green canvas tent preparing the next meal for the 60 to 70 Adults and the 100 + children on the Island for our annual “Father – Son” camp. In those days the squadron cooked everything for everyone on the island. That was a huge undertaking, but Steve made it look easy. My job as the “waterboy” was to go to the “Hill” for water and provisions on every high tide. We would go through about 100 gallons of water twice a day. That’s a lot of Cooking and CLEANING. We were all part of “Steve’s Crew” and those were some of the BEST days of my (and a couple hundred more of his honorary nephews) Life. Steve never had any Political ambition, but to be elected “Camp-Master” and having his name carved into the “staff” had to be like being elected mayor of the island. He served at many post on TIOTP (The Island Of Twin Palms) including but not limited to… “Judge” of kangaroo court, “Camp Elder,” “Defense Attorney,” “Referee,” of the Boxing matches… Coach, Uncle, Sheriff, Para-medic, and DAD. Not bad for one quiet dad from Tybee Island… May God Bless,

Tybee Breeze
No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze
By Michael D. Sullivan, Tybee Guy
THE SIGN BOOGIE “Sign, sign everywhere a sign, blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind…” Does the chorus of this song remind you of the political yard sign explosion on Tybee when every election cycle comes to pass? The lyrics from the 1971 mega -hit…SIGNS… belong to the 5 Man Electrical Band, a Canadian rock group. The words are set in hippie protest dialogue to fight conforming to societal dictates. “Long-haired freaky people need not apply…” “Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign…” Tybee is featuring long-haired candidates with beards as well as shorter-haired cuts favored by males and females. “Freaky” is not attributed to them and I suppose that is what 40 years of actual history since SIGNS is all about… doing one’s cultural thing in one’s cultural way. I can report that no candidate is sporting a nose or lip ring. Belly-button-rings, well, that is still a political unknown. Toe rings are most acceptable fashion as well as ring tones on cell phones. SIGNS is available if you are so inclined. As for verbiage, political ranting is now in as well as unsigned email charging someone with something. And there is always the mystery stuff about certain hidden documents now produced that will nail City Hall to the sea wall. Tybee elections are noisy whispering affairs covering diverse definitions of just about everything. We the people are bombarded with candidates spewing what is wrong here, what is right here, what can be cool here, and what just has to go here. Add to that questions now being argued about the power of the city manager to rule the island’s human and tech machinery. And, what is the effectiveness of the mayor to ambassador Tybee beach nourishment and infrastructure money from the state of Georgia and the federal government? For the record, Tybee voted for a strong city manager/ weak mayor form of governance. That does not mean the mayor is weak as the leading, presiding city official. It is government-speak. The city manager is not elected. The official is hired and can be dismissed by the City Council. The city manager serves at the pleasure of the council and the mayor. The current city manager has been on the job for 5 years…in fact, the longest serving city manager in Tybee history. So much for civics. “To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in. If God was here he’d tell you to your face, Man, you’re some kinda sinner.” So sings the 5 Man Electrical Band. Well, we have the Tree Huggers and Sand Bubbas arguing both sides of this line and I suppose that will always be the scenario on this succulent island.
No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze
The yard signs of all colors reflect that as candidates tend to run in blocks with generally the same spiel on issues. The signs are bunched together in small groupings. They are there to signify a set of Tybee mayoral and council candidates… that one could buy a used car from and not regret it. What sometimes baffles voters is that the block signs may be surrounded by FOR SALE and FOR RENT signs. It is the same for the single candidate signs placed in yards and seen on city access property lines. Be advised that FOR SALE and FOR RENT are not running for office. Neither is former mayor Walter Parker, or former councilmen John O’Neill and Mallory Pearce. Yet, in John O’Neill’s front yard, all three signs co-exist in a smooth and seamless retrofit. there Also, are signs for Eddie Crone, Whitley Reynolds, and Jack Youmans, all former council people, in O’Neill’s yard. A Walter Cunnihan sign for mayor is being sought and who knows who else from the past will appear on a sign there before the November elections. O’Neill is catching a lot of comedic buzz on his effort. “I did it for the hell of it,” says Johnny O’. He said folks tell him they did not know his yard candidates were running. The always adroit impresario added, “It’ll keep everybody on their toes.” O’Neill sees the mayor’s race as the large attraction this time out. He says the three way race is the big ticket to get folks to vote. And, Tybee is praised for turning out at the polls. He said everyone is talking about who will snare votes from each other’s base. Meanwhile, the three mayoral candidates are counting votes, a practice they do much better than mere mortals. “Old political signs don’t die. They just show up in the yards of supporters.” Walter Parker says that along with signs are what people on Tybee look for in an election. And, that his re-election sign in O’Neill’s yard has got to…” boost your ego a little bit! “ The Tybee mayor for 16 years predicts this mayoral election will be close. As for the Tybee Council, Mallory Pearce is looking for consistency in what a candidate says and then does. An environmentalist, he naturally favors green candidates. As for his election sign on O’Neill’s lawn, “I think it’s hysterical.” For 10 years, Mallory won a seat campaigning on a Tree Hugger ticket. He says the incumbents this year have a good chance of retaining their seats. He looks for development under control and measures to protect the natural wonders Tybee offers. And he says he is the guy who started the doorto-door campaigning that is the marching order these days. Call that a SIGN OF THE TIMES Petula Clark sang and scored a giant, international hit in the 60’s. It was the same for singer Brenton Wood who begged…GIVE ME SOME KIND OF SIGN, GIRL… You can always call Walter Parker, John O’Neill, Mallory Pearce, Petula Clark, Brenton Wood or any of the 5 Man Electrical Band if you are still confused about what sign to vote for in november. It is time now for endless speeches, spirits, rallies, and free grub gabfests. Tybee, our alluring jewel by the Big Deep, goes a courtin’… Tybee Breeze

Bare Necessities
By Judy O’Neill
Recent events, like power failures and appliance malfunctions, have shown me clearly what I can NOT and will NOT live without in my twenty-first century pampered existence. Just a few short weeks ago, the washing machine hose developed a leak which turned into a full geyser within seconds and flooded the laundry room. Then the ice maker decided to just freeze and stop. That was when I was mixing a drink to try to deal with the flood from the washer. Next, the battery operated doorbell went nutso and wouldn’t quit ringing until, in an absolute frenzy, I tore the receiver apart and tossed the batteries across the room. Well, I fixed the doorbell fairly easily so I could hear the repairman if he came to the door. The washer is now fixed thanks to the husband who turned out to be rather handy-dandy with his repair abilities. (Who knew!?) I bought a bag or two of ice and poured it into the ice maker bin so cocktail hour is back on schedule. The ice maker will get fixed eventually. This is Tybee and ice is important; but, well, this is Tybee, and sometimes sitting on the porch enjoying the breeze and cocktails--or even good ole Diet Coke--poured over store bought ice just takes over.
Procrastination is a way of life here. T h a t brings me to that amazing entity known as Georgia Power. After the last couple of lengthy power outages that occurred when two or three rain drops evidently tripped a switch somewhere or some idiot disconnected the extension cord that supplies Tybee’s power, we bought a generator. It won’t power everything but I can plug in a fan and keep cool (especially now that fall is here) and make sure the vodka in the freezer stays chilled and the Haagen Dazs remains edible. Seriously, folks, I just don’t get why we seem to have so many more power failures than we used to. Heck, way back when, even in hurricanes, we’d only lose power for a few hours. Now, I hold my breath every time I hear thunder. Anyway, all of the recent outages and malfunctions led me to start a list of basic things that I can’t live without and, most of the time, take for granted. And just think. Our great grandparents may have thought some of these things that seem so small and so every day to us now were luxuries! Electricity. Washers / Dryers / Clean Clothes. Refrigerators / freezers / ice makers. Air conditioning. Indoor plumbing /toilet paper. Soap. Deodorant. Lip Gloss. Hair dryers. Cars / gasoline. The one I had to think about a minute was the doorbell, especially with campaign season upon us. I can do without that little irritant. I may just take those new batteries out so I won’t hear the politicians try to ring the bell. (Political note: If you want me to vote for you, don’t come to my door to campaign. Seriously!) What’s on your list of bare necessities? Til next month, keep the vodka chilled, the Haagen Dazs in good supply, and your fingers crossed that the power doesn’t go out. After all, October is one of Tybee’s best months! Pirates Fest? Halloween? Art festivals. Breezy Awards? Need I say more?? And think about this, me mateys, as you enjoy all the Pirate hoop-la. Pirates smelled bad because they didn’t have some of these Bare Necessities. Arrrrgh/ Ewww. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past eight years. September on Tybee I wrote this article intended for publication in last month’s Breeze but missed the deadline. So what was I to do - throw it away, wait until next September, or assume Tybee folk, who are accustomed to operating on “Tybee Time,” won’t notice? The decision was easy. “September, The Ideal Month on Tybee Island.” I did not make that claim since I prefer October. Those words were taken from the “Official Annual Labor Day Review” published by the Trades and Labor Assembly of Savannah in September 1931. Permit me to take a quick break from reporting on the minutes of Council meetings to tell you what the Trades and Labor Assembly – “Devoted to the Progress of the Labor Movement in Savannah” - had to say about September on Tybee. Julianne Jarvis Meyers shared with me a copy she has of the Trade Assembly’s 1931 publication. It included two articles by her father, W. B. Jarvis, who was very active in the labor movement. Many of you will remember Julianne’s brother, Johnny, a neighbor and good friend of mine who died a few years ago. I reported on his tales of riding the Tybee Train a while back. The thing that caught my attention as something you might be interested in was a one-page testimonial promoting commerce on Tybee. First there was a message from the Town of Savannah Beach. [1931 was during those dark years on Tybee when some misguided and unenlightened people had changed the name of the “Town of Tybee” to the “Town of Savannah Beach” – 1929 to 1978 – probably the same ones that changed “16th St.” to “Tybrisa St.”]
Sincerely yours, The Town of Savannah Beach Tybee Island, Ga.” [Below the Town’s message is:]

This summer has been an emotional rollercoaster for us at the 4-H Center. We worked very hard with the help of the community to give Clover a grand send-off to her new life at sea. And if you’ve been following her on www.seaturtle. org, then you’ve noticed that her tracker is no longer transmitting. This is definitely disappointing because of all the work to get the tracker, and also the curiosity to see where she would travel. However, even though the tracker is no longer transmitting it does not mean that she did not survive her first weeks at sea. The tracker was heavily cemented to her shell and encased in epoxy, but the antennae that actually transmitted her location did not have the same protection. When our staff consulted with the vet who applied the tracker and GDNR officials, we were told that it is not uncommon for sea turtles to break or damage the antennae when sleeping or feeding around rocks or submerged debris. And from watching her in our tank, she loved to be around blocks and was not afraid to run into them when in pursuit of food. I thoroughly believe this explanation to be the reason Clover is no longer transmitting. She was way too feisty for me to even entertain any other scenario. Unfortunately losing track of Clover was not our only loss this summer. Stephen Hendrix worked with us at the 4-H Center for five years. Losing him as a member of our staff a year ago was sad, but losing him from this world last month was heartbreaking. Steve was one of the hardest working and most dedicated men that I’ve ever met. He never quit until the job was done and always made sure it was done right. But he was more than a co-worker or friend, he was family. I was never nervous about moving five hours away from home because I knew Steve would be there with the right advice or tool for the job. Our Monday morning coffee break usually turned into an hour of him recounting the latest adventures of the grandkids with the biggest smile on his face. He was always so proud of his family. And whenever my dogs had gotten into mischief, he never missed a beat with a story of Bo or Honey – miraculously my babies seemed like angels again. We weathered many ups and downs together, and I can honestly say that he was the one above all others who kept me going after the death of my husband. He always had the right words to get a smile back on my face and make sure I stayed in school and kept my life on track – even on the rough days. I’m grateful to have known such a man; Steve had a true gift for bringing out the best in those around him. I know he now has his wings and I’m sure he’s already been putting them to good use.

BRACIOLE An adventure in grocery shopping. Braciole? What is it? What’s it for? How do you pronounce it? It’s Bra-sholle! It’s Italian. It’s the best way to get the most for your meat money. These days we need it. Braciole most often is exceptionally thin cut beef pounded out to be even thinner to make stuffed meat rolls. Stuffing is your choice, bread crumbs, grated cheese, minced pancetta (Italian ham), mushrooms, dried fruit, onions, garlic, hard boiled eggs, spinach, and what ever you fancy. The rest is easy; the Braciole is then snuggled in a pan of “Sunday gravy” and simmered for hours until succulent and tender. Ingredients for stuffing: Extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup finely diced pancetta (or ham) 1 large onion finely diced Kosher salt Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes 2 cups day old bread, crusts removed, cut into 1 inch chunks 1 cup milk 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1/2 lb. button or cremini mushrooms, sliced 1/2 lb. spinach, stems removed, and finely sliced 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts 1/2 cup grated provolone cheese, or mozzarella 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 lbs. top round or flank steak, cut into 1/2 inch slices (about 12) Sauce: Extra-virgin olive oil 1 large onion finely diced Pinch crushed red pepper flakes Salt to taste (Kosher) 2 cloves garlic, smashed, finely chopped 4 tablespoons tomato paste 1 cup good red wine

1 3-2 ounce can San Marzano tomatoes, pureed 2 cups water Grated parmesan cheese for garnish How to, beef rolls: Coat a large sauté pan with olive oil, add the pancetta and bring the pan to med. heat. Cook the pancetta until it gets brown and crispy, about 5- 7 mins. Add the onions, crushed red pepper and stir. Season with a little salt. Cook the onions until they are soft & aromatic, about 7-8 mins. While the onions are cooking, in a large bowl, combine the bread & milk. Toss to combine & let sit until the bread has absorbed all the milk & is very soft. Use your hands to really get in there & squish everything together. Add the garlic to the pan with the pancetta & onion & sauté for 2-3 mins. Add the mushrooms, season with salt, to taste & sauté until the mushrooms are soft & have released their moisture, about 4-5 mins. Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the spinach. Add the onion mushroom mixture to the bread & stir to combine. Add the pine nuts, provolone, parmesan & stir. Taste and season with salt, if needed. Set aside. Lay beef slices between 2 pieces of plastic wrap & pound with a meat mallot to even out about 1/4 inch thick. Put 1/4 cup of filling on 1 end of each of the pounded meat slices & roll up tightly. Secure with tooth picks or tie with butcher’s string. Repeat with remaining beef & filling. Coat a large wide pot with olive oil & put over med-high heat. Season beef rolls with salt, to taste & brown the rolls on all sides, when well browned remove from pan and set aside. Make the sauce in the same pan. Sauce: Remove the oil from the pot the beef was browned in. Add a light coating of fresh olive oil, add the onions & crushed red pepper. Season with salt & put the pot over med. heat. Sweat the onions until they are translucent & aromatic, about 7-8 mins. Add the garlic & sauté for a minute or 2, do not burn. Stir in the tomato paste & red wine, cook 6-8 mins. Add the tomatoes & 2 cups of water, season with salt to taste. Return the beef rolls to the pan & snuggle them into the sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat & simmer until the beef is very tender, about 2 to 2- 1/2 hours. Remove the toothpicks before serving. To serve, arrange 2 or 3 braciole on each plate. Halve 1 or 2 rolls to expose the stuffing. Spoon on some of the sauce, garnish with parmesan cheese & chopped parsley or That’s Braciole! basil.

Responsible Alcohol Use Last year, I wrote about responsible alcohol use. I couldn’t not do so. When I look at the AVOIDABLE accidents and injuries here on Tybee, the common thread is frequently over-consumption of alcohol. While I am not about to say the there is anything wrong with responsible alcohol use in moderation, there are many things wrong with mixing excessive alcohol with the ocean or rivers or boats or cars. I can’t count the number of times I have watched a sunburned beach-goer failing a sobriety test on Butler or Highway 80 after a great day at the beach. What a terrible way to end a beautiful day! Sitting on the beach and drinking beer all day is a recipe for disaster. Alcohol is a powerful diuretic (meaning it causes your body to make urine). Sitting out in the sun also causes your body to lose water through sweat. This relative dehydration cause’s one’s blood alcohol level to be even higher, than if they were well-hydrated. Knowing an acceptable amount of alcohol to consume and remain legally sober may be useful, but there are so many variables that can affect one’s blood alcohol level. Body weight, hydration status, liver function, alcohol content of the beverage, time to consume a volume of alcohol, food load and other factors can all effect blood alcohol levels. Therefore it is difficult to draw a rule of thumb for safe alcohol consumption, especially in a beach environment where relative dehydration can frequently occur. The time to make a decision regarding responsible alcohol use begins before the first drink. Individuals need to plan to catch a ride with a non-drinker or call a cab if alcohol use is part of the plan. Here on Tybee, with the incredible service of the Crab Cab, it is unfathomable that anyone would ever get a DUI. Groups need to determine a designated driver in advance and encourage that these
26
Tybee Breeze
individuals have non-alcoholic beverages for their entire day. The designated driver is the hero for the day and needs to be treated as such! The complications involving DUI are worth discussion. The medical issues in an otherwise healthy person are typically short-lived, as long as trauma does not occur during the time of inebriation; however the legal ramifications can last for years or even decades. I have seen careers ended, relationships lost and reputations damaged. We all have. So please, drink AND SERVE responsibly. Please don’t over-serve patrons who are already drunk. If you drink, use a designated driver, call a Crab Cab or call a friend, but please don’t drink and operate a car, motorcycle or boat or get in the water. Better yet, keep alcohol consumption to a reasonable level. You can enjoy Tybee without over-consuming alcohol and in fact I would argue that Tybee can be enjoyed more without the medical and legal complications of alcohol overuse. I have seen multiple 5-day Tybee visits that have been essentially reduced to a 2 day visit from alcohol overuse: 5 days minus two ½ days of intoxication and 2 days of hangover for each half day of inebriation. Wouldn’t you rather enjoy the full five days? I certainly would!

The end of the Tybee sea turtle season is coming to a close. By the time this article is published, the Tybee Sea Turtle Project will most likely have completed the nest inventory on our final nest located at 9th Street. Our season was a little higher than average. Tybee was visited by 15 female loggerhead sea turtles. Of the total visits, nine were actually nests. The first nest was discovered on May 25 and the final nest was discovered on July 26th. All nine of the nests were relocated. Tybee, because it is a re-nourished beach every 7-8 years, had a slop (Hurricane Irene has since removed the slop) on the front side of our beach that kept the females from crawling further up the beach for nesting. Each nest was relocated within the twelve hours time frame as required by the Georgia Department of Natural Resource. This means the volunteers moved the eggs before the embryo attached to the egg shell. Once that occurs damage to the egg could occur and development could cease. The nests were safely relocated to a higher and darker par t of the dunes on Tybee. Our final nest, Nest 9, will reach the hatching window by Sept. 13th and should hatch within that week. The nests on Tybee had an average incubation period of about 54 days. Nest 8, located at 10th Street, began hatching on day 48 at
No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze
around 6pm. With the exception of nest 8, the other nests hatched at night. I am happy to report that we did not have near as many disorientated hatchlings this season. Thanks for helping us keep our beach dark. The nine nests laid on Tybee contributed to the total of 2,003 (as of September 12) sea turtle nest found on the Georgia beaches this season. This was a record year for sea turtle nesting in Georgia. At the time of writing, approximately 108,000 baby sea turtles have emerged from nests on all the Georgia barrier islands and have made their way to the sea. As our sea turtle season comes to a close, there are several things that you can do to make sure the sea turtles return to our beach next spring. First, make sure to pick up any trash that is not only on the beach, but on other parts of the island as well. The trash could reach the ocean where a sea turtle, adult or hatchling, could mistake it for food. Protect out beach and dune system by staying out of the dunes. Not only is it illegal to walk through a dune system, but our female sea turtles depend on those areas for their nesting habitat. Finally use the off season to assess your outside lighting, we need the beach to remain as dark as safely possible from May to October each year. As I close, I need to give a huge THANK YOU to the sea turtle volunteers. I could not have completed this season without your help and dedication. For more info on sea turtles or the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center! The center is located at 1510 Strand Avenue. If you wish to donate, please call (912)786-5917, or visit www. tybeemsc.org. What’s a Tourist to Do? By Alaina Loughridge I know it’s awfully late in the season for this information, but my hindsight has always been 20/20. I would have made a terrible attorney. Driving home after my client just received the death penalty, I would realize I could have gotten them acquitted. Sigh. Anyway, it’s early September right now and I have had the epiphany of giving tourists good tourist information on what to do on Tybee. Better than late than never … This is what I know: First thing you want to do is check your surroundings. Are you on the north end? Then make transportation arrangements immediately. You do not want to deal with parking on Tybee. You will just get pissed off. Call Crab Cab, Island Hopper, or Pedicab. If you are the self-sufficient type, go to Fat Tire and rent a bike or scooter. Another option is Tybee Cruisers (although a designated driver is required for that). Now that you are settled, you are hungry. There are several excellent restaurants within your grasp where you can stuff yourself silly. A few not to be missed establishments are Wind Rose for Sheppard’s Pie (Monday only) they also cook a burger that will have you patting your belly with equal parts joy and pain because
28
Tybee Breeze
you can’t help not eating all of it. Spanky’s is another must eat. Get spuds. Don’t ask what they are, just get them. You also want to eat dinner watching the sunset at A.J.’s, get a daiquiri at Tybee Time, eat the stuffed fried shrimp at Bernie’s, meatloaf at Doc’s, pizza and beer at Lighthouse, drink mimosas at Bennie’s, and eat the southwest rolls at Nickie’s. That’s just the south end, friends! On the north end, you want to hang out and eat pizza at Huc a Poo’s. Definitely stop by Café Coco’s and eat the Bob Marley. Cruise the boulevard to Mexi-Cali for Mexican and stop by Sundae Café for everything on the menu! Don’t forget that tipping is not the state sport of Wisconsin. Now that your accommodations and dining have been arranged, what to do next? Are you an active on-the-go type of person? Well you can rent jet skis at Tybee Island Marina, kayaks at Sea Kayak Georgia or hop on the Tybee Island Slow Ride for kicks and giggles. Not into anything that requires you to elevate your heart rate? That’s cool too. You got options. You can check out the library, catch a dolphin tour with Captain Mike, take a tour at the Marine Science Center and/or the 4-H Center, or get a manicure at Salon Isobe. Tybee also offers a YMCA, many churches to get your God on, the Post Theatre, a lighthouse, the IGA grocery store, deep sea fishing at Tybee Island Charters, and if you really want to go nuts, get married at the Tybee Wedding Chapel. One of my truly favorite things about Tybee is the open container law. Yeah!! You can stroll the avenue with a fine beverage of your choice as long as it is in plastic or Styrofoam. I know! Really and truly! No glass please! Also, no driving please while imbibing said fine beverage. Word on the street is that The Man is beginning to frown on aluminum. I’ve heard several different stories, so just play it safe and stick to plastic for your beer. Also, do not throw your empties on the street. Come on now. There are trash cans everywhere. Use them! There you have it. Just a few ideas of how to make your vay kay more enjoyable and ensure that you maximize your time - that is assuming anyone is out there to read this. If you are, now you don’t have to wander around vaguely wondering what to do with yourself. So welcome to Toon Town folks! Oh, did I forget to mention that we have a beach?

Our Patriot’s Day Ceremony went very well. Approximately two hundred people came to Memorial Park to show that we still stand together against the violence brought to us by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Our Mayor and Congressman Kingston spoke of how the effects of September 11 affected them and their families. They also spoke of how the City of Tybee Island and the State of Georgia have endured in the years since 2001. Police Chief Bryson and Fire Chief Sasser both gave well deserved accolades to their officers who protect us every day. As most of us know, over three hundred emergency service workers were among the 3,000 plus who were killed on September 11th, and many more have died since, from illnesses received during their attempts to save people. And as always, our thanks to Park Ranger Ronald Calhoun who sang several inspiring songs that gave inspiration and really fit the event.
This month we will have our Second Annual Fall Steak Dinner at the Post on October 16th. It will be just like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day earlier this year. We hope everyone finds time to attend. Reservations can be made by calling the Post after 5pm We continue to look for new members. If you’re interested in the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary or Sons of the Legion call the Post (786-5356) for information. Bingo is on Fridays at 8pm. Cards go on sale at 7:15pm. Horseshoes will be Saturday evenings at 7pm with sign-in starting at 6:30. Both events are open to the public and everyone is invited to participate. The Legion and Auxiliary meet on the second Monday of the month, with social hour (and food) starting at 6pm and the meeting at 7pm. The Sons of the Legion meet on the third Monday at 7pm. As always, Linda or Patti will have the canteen open at 5pm every day except Sunday. We close on Sundays unless there is a special event.
Hello Breeze readers, First, if you did not make the Legion’s Auction you really missed a good time. Entertainment was provided by the duo of “Martha Swindelle and Lee Sanchez” for the evening. If you need some really great entertainment please contact them. Folks were dancing their feet off!! (They are particularly great for an auction as they spend money too.) And I know you probably think that all we do is cook and eat; well you’re pretty close to being right. The food was intense for a lack of a better word SO GOOD and SO MUCH. Auxiliary members again out did themselves!! The Legion made a good amount of $$ even in this economic downturn. I don’t even know where to begin regarding Patriots Day!! Sonny Dixon made it so very special. I can still think about his wonderful humor and how very sincere he is about this “Great Country” that we live in called “America.” He is truly a one of a kind M.C. Our own “Lynn Marston” better know as “Song Bird” singing
the National Anthem was truly inspiring. Commander Georgia Walker did a great job as did Ron Callahan. The Fire Fighters, Police and Soldiers were there. Fire Chief Skip Sasser and Police Chief Bob Bryson gave wonderful comments and added much to the program from the view of those first on the scene. Let’s not forget our “First District” Jack Kingston and the view that he provided from Washington. And last but not least, the Coast Guard “fly over” gave you goose bumps and Taps and Amazing Grace brought a tear to the eye! All did a superb job to make the program and event a success. Thanks to all. We have lots of upcoming events. October 23rd covered dish supper; bring your favorite and join in. Also, for Halloween on Lewis Ave, the Auxiliary has voted for a donation towards buying candy for the little ones. That’s what we are all about helping our veterans and community. We are always looking for new members to join our family. Hope to see you soon.

of light in order to lock on to a path of direction. This can be confusing to them especially with the amount of light rays emitted to them. There are many varieties in the moth family. Some of the species include:
Angoumois Grain Moth
Moths Contrary to popular belief, moths are not necessarily attracted to just any light in general or the light emitted from your porch light and other home lighted areas. What seems to happen with these creatures is all brightness of light confuses them with their sense of direction and thus disorientates their ability to fly straight. Sort of like deer in the headlight scenario. As studied by scientists, it still is not known how the moth uses light rays be it as lunar or solar situation as a guide of direction. What has also been studied is that the moth moves in a straight line generally keeping in check its position in tune with the angle of light rays. This strikes the eyes of the moth and is a pretty complicated guidance system instilled by nature and kicks in when a light source is far-away. This light mode seems to go haywire to their system when a light source is close to them. The moth’s nervous system instructs their ability to fly so that both eyes can get the same amount
Which mainly attack a whole grain product such as corn, barley, rye, oats, rice and many other seeded products. Another group is called:
Case Making Clothes Moth These are a common pest and habits of feeding include: woolen, russ, feathers, furs, many taxidermy mounts as well as tobacco products.
Indian Meal Moth This is one in the industry we have greatly encountered not only in the homes of our clients but in the commercial businesses we service also. They can be found in your flour, meal products, whole grains, chocolates, crackers, beans, pet food and chili peppers.
Webbing Clothes Moths Webbing clothes moths are usually about one half inch long. The larvae also are one half inch long when mature. These creatures are basically small caterpillars. Their color can be white with a light brown head. They can infest in any fabric and can deposit their eggs which can hatch in as few as several days to a 45 day range. There can be a lengthy molting process that can be from one moth to one month and a half. They can feed on many products such as carpets, upholstery, clothes, wool, animal hair and felt. The most preventative way of control is a major cleaning of all materials in the cloth, carpet and upholstery areas. They then should be treated with a proper pesticide with residual properties. The word pest is an ancient term derived from the word pestilence. Throughout history there have been many remedies and concoctions to control these creatures of habit. In modern times we have come a long way with research experimentations and trial and error to be more effective in controlling our current day pest population that we share on our planet. As more research is explored in our industry we strive to implement and incorporate procedures that control these insects and the target pest in question. Until next time, Let’s work the bugs out! Cowboys vs. Aliens The title of this film should give you a clue that this film ain’t winning no Oscar for Best Picture. Best Actor. Best Actress. Best Cinematography, etc. That being said, it was a fun movie. Starring Harrison Ford (who makes an excellent cowboy), Daniel Craig (who makes a really excellent cowboy) and Olivia Wilde (still wrapping my mind around the floor length dress with a gun and holster), this flick is what it is. I very much enjoyed the entire premise of Old West meets Outer Space. However, the alien looks like a combo package of Aliens, Independence Day, E.T., Super 8 and the evil Spiderman’s teeth (dentist please!). Combine that with the reason they are on Earth, and you got yourself a genuine o.k. movie. I won’t ruin it for you, because it is fun and there are some terrific old west meets new west battles, but I am not going to lie (this time): The chief Indian looked like he belonged in a Bacardi commercial smoking a stogie and being surrounded by bimbos. Wait for Red Box. So, I give this movie 5 bottles of Bacardi (because it’s good, but it ain’t that good).
The Help Having gone into this movie blind as far as not knowing there was a best selling book out there and having been seriously misled by the previews, I was kinda disappointed. The previews made it look like a happy happy joy joy good time flick about people bitching about their job. Yes. No. I wasn’t prepared for a very serious civil rights movement and a wife beater. So, now that I’ve got that off my chest, it was a great movie! If you know what to expect. Set in Jackson, MS in the 1960’s, Emma Stone as Skeeter returns from Ole Miss to the family home. As an aspiring writer, she decides to write a book about the local black women that work as maids for her and her friends. As there are still ‘white’ sections and ‘colored’ sections, it is very taboo. There are some very funny scenes. Octavia Spencer as Minnie is a great comic wit, but it was ruined by her husband beating her. Bryce Dallas Howard as the manipulating evil desperate housewife Hilly is superb! It’s fun hating her and when she ate ‘that pie.’ Oh, good times right there! The long and short of it is this: Go in knowing it isn’t all good times, but you are guaranteed a giggle and some special insight. I give this movie 4 bottles of Southern Comfort (because just because I was caught off guard doesn’t mean you have to be) and 1 bottle of Gentlemen Jack (because “love and hate are two horns on the same goat.”) On a separate side note: Do not go see My Idiot Brother. I would write a review, but it’s not worth my time. Just know that Howard and Gordy walked out in the middle of it. Nuff said.

Libra (September 23 - October 22) It time to buckle down and get your to-do list taken care of! Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Don’t paw the ground and lower your head or someone could think that you’re ready to chaaaaaarge! In fact, the opposite might just be true -- so instead of the rough-andtumble approach, try batting your eyelashes. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) Single? Well, get out and get mingling. Someone you’d really enjoy knowing is right around the corner. If you’re attached, mingle with your partner. Use those flirtatious energies to your advantage. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Someone financially and emotionally stable is due to cross paths with you -- and for once, they’ll be willing to do their part to keep this thing going. Sure, you’ll be shocked, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy every minute. Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) More surprises await you on the home front -- one of which could turn out to be quite delightful. Your already outstanding gift of gab will be even more lethal. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) You’ll be the star of the show for at least 2 weeks, and since there’s no way you won’t be noticed, make the most of it. Aries (March 21 - April 19) All kinds of fiery, dramatic, interesting types will cross your path, with an equally interesting array of offers. Be on your toes. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) You’re in an especially festive mood, and ready to play. Try not to be as excessive as you’d like to be, though. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) The drama in your life will go from a 1 to 11. Practice tossing meaningful glances, and saying just enough so that they’re wondering what you really meant by that.

COCKSPUR LIGHTHOUSE GETS HISTORICAL MARKER! Georgia Historical Society and the friends of the Cockspur Island Lighthouse unveiled Cockspur’s new historical marker. With this distinction, the lighthouse will be protected, since it was put on the “Place in Peril” List because the Savannah River is slowly eroding the land it sits on. The lighthouse has taken a beating over the years. It was rebuilt after a hurricane. It also lasted through a gun battle from Tybee to Fort Pulaski during the Civil War. “Without our help, it will fall into the Atlantic if we don’t do something about it,” said Harvey Ferrelle, president of Friends of Cockspur Island Lighthouse. “The history speaks well for where it’s been, but where it’s going is what we really want to make sure happens. That’s why we have this pretty interesting group of people that worked so hard to preserve the Cockspur Island Lighthouse.” No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze

From Tybee to Mystic The Tybee Breeze decided to take a little vacation from last month’s heat and head north once again up to New England’s quaint village of Mystic. Mystic Connecticut is known by many for the movie “Mystic Pizza” which starred Julia Roberts back in 1988, but there is so much more to Mystic besides the normal water activities, boating, fishing, sailing etc. It also boasts 17 acres of nautical museum, Mystic Seaport with a living history museum showing coastal life as it would have been in New England back in the 19th century. Then there is the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, which is a huge native- American museum located just minutes away and a must for a rainy day, but be warned, stay away from the observation tower if you don’t like heights like me!
If gambling Is your game there are also two of the largest Casino’s in the area, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. M y s t i c also has one of the oldest drawbridges dating back to 1920, crossing the drawbridge, Mystic River Bascule Bridge takes one to the local shops and restaurants of which Mystic has plenty. As for Accommodations, B&B’s, motels and hotels are plentiful here, first trip was in a hotel but this time we chose a cute cabin

A taste of Tybee Island returns to Mystic, CT.
There are various types of people in this world, people who love cities, people who love the wilderness and people who love the water. City people enjoy chaos and noise but typically only have an affinity for their own city. We see that in New York vs. Los Angeles, Detroit vs. Chicago and other territorial rivalries. Wilderness people love the country and are a more solitary and self-sufficient group of people. Water people enjoy Continued page 48

adventure and the ability to dance between and flourish amongst both a land community and water community. If we used birth order to explain the groups City people would be the eldest child, country people the middle child and water people the youngest or baby of the family. Tybee and Mystic are bound by their love of the water. I am a water person and if you are reading this you most likely are too. I’m not saying we are better than city or country people (but if you want to say it go ahead.) We understand we do not own the water but have been granted the privilege of using it. We take the time to enjoy each day because we lay eyes on magnificent sunrises and sunsets nearly every day yet greet each new one as an individual gift from Mother Earth. There also is a sense of rebel and iconoclast that we have been given and is almost revered and expected by city and country people. When you see a bunch of people on a boat or at the beach you don’t even question if there will be drinking. That’s like me asking if there will be drinking at a St. Patrick’s Day party. Even though you may be agreeing with me you must be asking yourself “what the heck is this about?” Well let me tell you. We here in Mystic, CT have been able to get a virtual taste of Tybee through social media. We have also had the pleasure of meeting (on more than one occasion) one of your very own, Julia Foster. It doesn’t matter which ocean, estuary, sea, waterway, lake, or river you call home we all share the same fondness for life, love, and happiness. Linda Hurteau, Mystic

We have revived the historic preservation commission and achieved recognition as both a Better Hometown Community and a Bicycle Friendly Community. We made progress in increasing the energy efficiency of city vehicles and city buildings. We have treated all citizens with respect and civility at public hearings. We also have several exciting new projects in the works such as the historic Butler Avenue Pedestrian Safety Project and the creation of a multiuse bicycle/pedestrian trail extending towards Lazaretto Creek along Highway 80. I want to continue this progress. With the experiences I have gained in my career, through community involvement, and by serving on Tybee’s city council, planning commission and Master Plan stakeholders group, I believe I can continue to ensure that we keep Tybee the best little beach community in which to live work and play.”
Tom Groover I want to be your representative on City Council. I have been a permanent Tybee resident since 2002, but have spent the majority of my life on or around Tybee. I am a graduate of Benedictine Military School and of Armstrong State College. I worked, in production management, in the shipbuilding industry for 35 years. Thirteen of those years were with two of the largest military defense contractors in the nation. I have been married for 35 years to my wife Lucy and we have four children. I am also of a communicant of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church. Why am I running for Tybee City Council? I have been asked that question a few times and my answer is simply this. I am not satisfied with the direction that the city is going. I feel that city government has lost accountability with the residents and voters on the island. Tybee needs a change in direction. We need to get back to common sense government. In these tough economic times, city council should rein in spending, maintain our city infrastructure and seriously work to pay off our city debt. These issues along with parking, employee turnover at city hall, planning and zoning department irregularities are all issues that need the full time attention of the new council. A vote for Tom Groover will guarantee you at least one voice in your corner. Thanks for your support, Tom Groover, Your Candidate for City Council
Jerry Onyskiw Jerry and his wife Sheilah chose Tybee Island as their retirement home after visiting family here. They moved to Tybee after he retired from Frito-Lay in 2005 after 25 years in sales management. During that time, he was in charge of 15 to 30 salesmen and responsible for an 8 millon dollar budget; he also worked on labor issues. He was named Frito-Lay’s man of the year in Chicago 2 years in a row. Jerry has been a board member of several home owners associations and is currently president of the DeSoto Beach Club Condo Association. He is responsible for keeping within budget and coordinating all faceys of condo issues with the management company. Jerry and Sheilah will be married 25 years on Christmas Eve. They share 6 grown children and 12 grandchildren, who all love to visit; they enjoy all the festivities Tybee has to offer, Pirate’s Fest, Beach Bum Weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, Mardi Gras, Christmas Parade & Polar Bear Plunge on New Years. “We feel it’s an exciting place to live and I’d like to help Tybee continue to carry on these traditions,” says Jerry. He is a life long athlete and outdoorsman; he attended Kent State University on a football scholarship and is an avid fisherman.

I love my work with the City of Tybee Island. It has given me the perfect opportunity to talk with many of the islands residents. As Chairman of the Planning Commission, I have listened to opinions on zoning, variances, green space and many other topics affecting the island. My work with the Better Hometown Program and the Historical Commission has introduced me to business people and residents who are concerned about our island’s events and character. As Chairman of the Shoreline Protection Commission, I had the chance to hear opinions from both developers and conservationists. I also enjoyed owning and operating a small business on 16th St. for two years. I personally served thousands of cups of coffee to residents and tourists. I had a firsthand look at the challenges our retailers faced, the seasons, the costs and the hard work. I have my degree in Accounting; this is a valuable tool for any member of Council. I have spent 30 years managing factories all over the U.S. I know what it is like to be responsible for payroll and people. David McNaughton But most of all, I love this little island we call home.
