Ironically, that dichotomy is exactly what this year’s King and Queen have planned for since the first Pirate Fest in 2005. The Pirate Fest, under their cultivation, has grown into a weekend of community-wide Pirate theme parties vs. a historically accurate Pirate faire. Paul got into the Tybee non-profit event production somewhat by chance. He had worked in grocery store management, TV ad sales and marketing prior to moving to Tybee and starting DeVivo Marketing, in the mid-1990’s. At about the same time Paula, who had managed retail and was raising three children moved to Tybee. The couple met on Tybee, married and both became immersed in Tybee life and volunteer efforts. In addition to marketing Tybee, as a vacation destination, through DeVivo publications, Paul has served on the Tourism Council, City Council committees and Paula on the Planning Commission. In 2000, Paul was approached by the City of Tybee to help plan a
welcoming party for a motorcycle rally that was celebrating the end of a crosscountry ride, on US Highway 80, from California to Tybee. Thus was Tybeefest born, a non-profit volunteer group that has, since its inception, planned and produced local entertainment events and festivals such as, Mardi Gras, Pirates Fest, Labor Day Beach Bash and New Years Eve Fireworks. Paul’s expressed mission for Tybeefest was to produce and promote fun events that would stimulate traffic and income for Tybee businesses, especially during the shoulder and off-seasons. Subsequent to the Pirate Fest 2009, Paul and Paula have both stepped away from the leadership of Tybeefest, to devote more time to their business DeVivo Marketing. Although retired from the day to day activities of Tybeefest and the planning for the Pirate Fest 2010, they both are still pirates at heart and this year they have made it easier to search for that special pirate or wench wear through their new online store “buccaneersbooty.com.” DeVivo was the original publisher of the “Tybee Breeze” and continues to ...Continued Page 4 Tybee Breeze

publish: “Where to Eat at the Beach,” “Tybee Homes” and hosts “Tybee Island Online,” six new Coastal GA websites and provides online services, such as web hosting and website design among other services. In all of the previous Pirate Fests, it was Paul that
chose the King and Queen, but now having stepped back from Tybeefest, Paul and Paula have been selected as the Pirate Fest 2010 - King and Queen, as a token of appreciation for their tireless efforts. So, although it may cause the ghost of Blackbeard to light his hair on fire and keelhaul himself, let’s all raise a cup of grog and toast this years King and Queen and thank them for their years of support to Tybee’s businesses, by marketing our little spit of sand as a premier vacation destination…! Keeping It Real Well the Pirate Princess celebrated her 2nd birthday, and that brings us into the countdown to Pirate Fest, which will be even bigger & better than previous years. Waste Not...Want Not... When I was a little girl this was a lesson my parents hammered into my head and in these times I am so thankful they did. At the Tybee Community Garden this is one of the lessons we are trying to garden by. When the city allowed us to build a Community Garden they gave us the land to use but we could only use rain water for our garden, not city water. Through this we realized how much water the air conditioner puts off every day. We soon put 400 gallon cisterns under the gutters on the YMCA gym. The cisterns are catching over 500 gallons a day just from air conditioning condensation! What a lesson to learn. Since water is a shortage and we live on an island and get very little rain maybe it is time for all of us to catch our condensation water from the air conditioners in our homes to water our gardens. Next time you are at the YMCA check out the cisterns. If you would like more information about joining our garden or about how you can begin to collect your rain water, give me a call and I will be glad to help. Karen Kelly 786-9719

By Janice Bentley Many of us remember going fishing with our dad as a great memory from childhood. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and SafeKids Savannah are organizing the first annual Kids Fishing & Coastal Water Safety Event on Saturday, September 25th from 8:30 am – 12:00 noon at the Tybee Pier and pavilion. The goal of this event is to promote fishing as a fun and safe family activity. The event is free for kids’ ages 5 – 12 years of age and the parent or legal guardian must accompany the child(ren). Free rod, reel bait and tackle box will be provided by the DNR. Event T-shirts for participating children and lunch will be provided by Memorial University Medical Center’s Trauma Services. Along with fishing and instructions, additional educational sessions are planned. The following sessions are planned: lifejacket safety, supervision in/around the water and sun safety, rigging and knots, bait, protecting our natural resources, and fishing rules and regulations. Volunteer organizations participating in the event include Coastal Conservation Association, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Chatham County Aquatic Center, Riptide Bait Shack, Tybee Marine Science Center, Georgia Aquarium, Starfish Aquatics Institute, and Georgia Kayak Fishing Foundation. Tybee Island Ocean Rescue will provide first aid and Tybee Beach Patrol will provide security for the event. Pre-registration is required – no on-site registration will be provided on event day. Registration forms are available at Chatham County Aquatic Center, Tybee Island YMCA and Tybee City Hall. For additional information, please contact Chatham County Aquatic Center at 652-6793.

By Jason Buelterman Mayor of Tybee Island Before getting down to City business, many thanks to all those who contributed to Miss Sylvia’s fund-raiser recently. As most of you know, our beloved Miss Sylvia Gott, the 101 year old dynamo whose attitude and outlook on life serves as an inspiration to anyone who has had the pleasure of coming into contact with her, had a fall in early August and as of today (August 16) is in the hospital. And, as is par for the course, Tybee folks came together to buy a stair lift so she can get to her second floor apartment. We may fight like bulldogs about our local politics, but when it comes time to help a resident in need, the whole Island comes together like a big happy family. Get well soon, Miss Sylvia! The recent dialogue about using city parking spaces for commercial business vehicles, trailers and trucks has been assigned to our Parking Committee. This Committee is made up of three council members and is assisted by city parking staff. They will be working

on a solution to this issue in a way that I am hopeful will be satisfactory to all involved. I am certain they would welcome any input you may have on the subject. Our efforts to develop a charter school on Tybee are moving forward. Meetings have been held recently with St. Michaels to discuss a possible location and have been held with Savannah-Chatham School staff to discuss logistics. Thus far, our discussions have gone very well. If you are not familiar with the concept of the charter school movement, a charter school is essentially a public school that is controlled by its own school board and receives funding based on the number of students who enroll in the school. We requested statistics from the SavannahChatham Schools relative to the number of public school students from the 31328 zip code and learned that there were more school-age children out here than we originally anticipated. Combined with the number of students who were enrolled at St. Michaels, there appear to be enough students to support a charter school on Tybee. The key question, of course, is whether there are enough families interested in a free, public education for their children on Tybee. To gauge interest in a Tybee charter school, we will be having a meeting at City Hall on Thursday, October 7 at 7 PM. At the meeting, we will share more detailed information about this possibility and try to get some input from our community. Any interested parents, students and community members are encouraged to attend. Many, many thanks to Carolyn Jurick, a former charter school principal and now a Tybee resident, for her hard work on this thus far. Tybee welcomed a new dentist to the Island recently. Dr. Jessanna E. Smith recently celebrated the opening of her practice, Tybee Teeth. We are blessed to continue to attract businesses that cater to our full time residents, which has a positive impact on our quality of life. I encourage you to continue to support our local businesses so that they can survive and thrive in a way that will attract even more business entities to our community. Welcome to Tybee, Dr. Smith! Finally, congratulations to the three candidates who ran for the Republican nomination to fill the very large shoes of State Representative Burke Day. Joe Welch, Gary Wisenbaker and Dr. Ben Watson all ran very positive campaigns. Dr. Watson won the hard-fought nomination and will take on Democrat Jeremy Schienbart in the November general election. What can we say about Burke? He delivered time and again for Tybee, whether it was sand on the beach, ADA-accessibility for our sidewalks, or a new truck for our Fire Department (just to mention a few things). Burke has been there for Tybee from Day 1. Not to mention his statewide leadership on public safety. And, of course, the landmark StephensDay bill, which saves homeowners in our county from back-door tax increases via jacked up assessments. His advocacy for Tybee and his work on behalf of our entire state will be sorely missed. More on this as we get closer to Burke’s official retirement from the State Legislature in January. Mayor’s Night In will be on Tuesday, September 14 from 7 until 9 PM. Please call Vivian Woods at 786.4573 ext. 103 for an appointment. Have a wonderful September and GO DAWGS!
As always, feel free to contact me at 786-4573, ext. 108 or via e-mail at buelterman@hotmail.com. See you around town. Tybee Breeze
Flight Attendants. I love them all! The recent hub-bub surrounding Steven Slater of Jet Blue fame has brought back some great memories of my experiences spanning many decades with flight attendants. One in particular comes to mind. It was 2007. Our flight from Paris to Atlanta was delayed leaving CDG (Charles De Gaulle) by two and a half hours. When we got to Atlanta, we knew we only had a few minutes to get to our connecting flight to Savannah. So we ran, really fast, from the international concourse to our gate in the A terminal. We could see that the jet-way door was still open. With a sigh of relief, we had made it! We jump on board the aircraft, out of breath, exhausted, and there right before me is a drop dead gorgeous six-two blond flight attendant who says: “What’s your hurry honey? We don’t have any pilots yet.” Turns out the cockpit crew who brought the plane to ATL “timed out,” and there was a delay while a new crew was located to take us to SAV. Now, I need to tell you something. I’m one of those airline passengers who always, without fail, pays attention to the safety briefing, even though I’ve heard it a hundred times. When the flight attendant says “remain seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop at the gate and the Captain has turned off the seat belt sign,” I comply. Of course, you know that some passengers think that the rules apply to everyone else but them. That’s why when Slater went postal over the cabin PA, I loved it! God! To have been on that plane. Flight crews put up with entirely too much crap from the flying public. Steven is a shining example of how one should handle a passenger who is out of compliance with the procedures. And speaking of airlines, did you know that Jiggs is afraid of flying?

A New Way to Look at You Tybee Island YMCA and Recreation Department By Hillary Brodofsky - Executive Director
It’s that time again! Fall is right around the corner, and with it comes all the fall sports we’ve all been waiting for. Soccer is the next big sport to come into season. Early registration is going on now so come on in and avoid those late fees! After you sign the youngsters up for soccer, consider the new tennis league the Tybee YMCA is putting together. It’s a flex style, and informal league designed to promote the sport and better the lifestyle of those who participate. We will be hosting a tournament towards the end of fall and we hope to see everyone there. Speaking of lifestyles, since Tybee has been voted healthiest beach in America, we want to make sure that bragging rights stay on Tybee! The YMCA will be working with “Tybee Throws a Fit” to promote and increase the health and wellness of everyone in the community. This month, two of our favorite and most skilled YMCA instructors will be in the spotlight--Sunny Weathers will be leading a ‘Cardio Kickoff’ and Leah Sparks will be providing a ‘Kickboxing to the Beat’ class. The whole event is certain to be a great time for everyone. For more information, stop by or call the Tybee YMCA, or go online to http://tybeethrowsafit.com.

Dear Fran, I was driving around the island looking for the nude beach. I heard some guys talking about naked sunbathing and I’d like to try that. Where is this nude beach? Eyes wide open, Ima Gawker Dear Ima, The nude beach is located adjacent to the dog beach. Just keep looking around and hoping you’ll find both. Yours truly, Fran Dear Fran, Why does Labor Day always fall on a Monday? And why don’t people go to work on Labor Day if it’s for laboring? And if you’re having a baby and go into labor on Labor Day, will there be anybody to deliver the baby? And don’t you think that if you have your baby on Labor Day, you should get a discount at the hospital? Worried about it, Constant Paine Dear Constant Paine, Lordy! Calm down. Labor Day is a day to honor and celebrate the hard working folk of America. Some people have to work. Some get the day off. You just need to get a grip! Chill out! Fran Dear Fran, My mother won’t let me drive to school. I have to ride the bus and I hate that. Any suggestions on how I can convince my mom to let me drive the car every day? Thanks! Toy Yota
Dear Toy, I can’t help you, sweet pea, because I happen to know you’re only 14! You’re too young to drive, silly. Plus, if you take the car, how will your mother get to work? Be patient! Fran Dear Fran, Now that many of the tourists have gone home and we locals have our island back, don’t you think we should have a Locals Day Out. Kind of like those national neighborhood nights out? And when’s the next parade? Aren’t we supposed to have one every month? Just thinking, Ty B. Guy Dear Ty, I think most of us are out already both day AND night. The Pirate’s Fest Parade is just around the corner. Get your group and grog together. It’s time to party! Is Tybee a great place or what? Tybidiots unite! Fran
Dear Readers, Some of you may remember that husband Fred Van Flanders and I went to Europe last month in search of Fred’s roots. We ended up in Flanders--where I’ve told Fred hundreds of times he needs to go for obvious reasons to everyone but him-and spent time in Brussels and Bruges. Fred finally found a man who was willing to admit that he is a very distant cousin of the family members who migrated to American in 1733. He said they rarely talked about those relatives who left Flanders way back when. All he knew was that when Frederique de Flandres first got to the New World, his Flemish name was so hard to spell that he decided to just be Fred from Flanders. His wife didn’t think that was classy sounding enough, so they became the Frederick Van Flanders family. (And you thought I was just kidding about the family tree thing, didn’t you?) Thanks for all the cards and letters, Fran Van Flanders

I Don’t Get It! By Judy O’Neill Am I just completely out of touch? Maybe. Because there are some things that I just don’t understand. Whenever I go on any travel adventure, I’m reminded once again of how many abnormal things and people there are in this world. Now, you must keep in mind that my standard for “normal” is based on Tybee. (That should tell me—and everybody else—something right there!) Why is there not any sort of illumination, not even one small 60-watt bulb, at the MAJOR intersection of I-16 and I-95? I had heard someone else mention that and didn’t give it too much thought until a recent flight back into the Savannah Airport—pardon me, the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport—brought us back into town around midnight. We were tired. It was dark. Guess what. We drove right past the exit to I-16. And let me tell you this, once you’ve missed it, you’ve missed it. To get to Tybee, we had to go all the way out to Highway 204 and come back to Tybee via Abercorn and Victory Drive. At least we got to stop at

the Krystal. Think how helpful one little light would have been. I know you’ve all heard of Soap Operas and know that they’re called that because they were traditionally sponsored by detergents and soaps to appeal to the housewife market that made up the bulk of the audience of the past. I like to watch “The Young and the Restless” on those days when I’m lucky enough to be home for lunch. There’s been a shift in the traditional sponsors of those long running soaps. Now many of the sponsors are drug companies. I guess we’ll need to rename the programming “Drug Operas.” That has a weird ring to it, doesn’t it? And, frankly, I’m a little weary of all those drug ads telling me symptoms that often border on embarrassing and to ask my doctor about certain meds, and then giving me the frightening, and also occasionally embarrassing, side effects to watch out for. Good thing I’m not a hypochondriac (yet). And speaking of embarrassing, I don’t like to see the bare naked stomachs of women who are eight or nine months pregnant. That’s really something that should be kept private and is too close to some really private parts in my opinion. Yes. I know it’s natural. But so is some other stuff that should be kept private. Here are some things I don’t get. In TV interviews, people will call a murderer, thief, or petty criminal a “gentleman.” Gentleman? I don’t think so. Speaking of gentlemen, I still truly believe that men should remove their hats and caps in restaurants. More and more, I see ball caps all over what I consider nice restaurants. Here’s another thing. Recently, there was a news story about a woman who FORGOT she left her baby in her car. The child died from the heat. SHE FORGOT HER BABY??? How is that even possible? I certainly don’t get that. And what’s up with the Travel Channel lately? Where’s the travel? They should call it Food Network II. It’s food or poker. I want trips and tours. And since we have ESPN and other sports channels, why is there ever any need to put a sports program on regular TV? Like when March Madness preempts “The Young and the Restless” or a ballgame comes up just when I sit down to watch “Jeopardy” to ascertain that I might be as smart as a high school senior. Oh, and Mr. President, can’t you have your news conferences a little earlier, like during “The Price is Right” or something and not during my favorite soap opera? (There are no re-runs of soap operas, so it’s like that intersection at I-16 and I-95. Once you miss it, you miss it.) And what’s up, fashionistas, with those onesleeved outfits? Some of them just look like the wearer had an accident or the manufacturer ran out or material before he could finish the top. Such a big world. So many things I just don’t get. Give me Tybee normal anytime. Judy O’Neill has written for the Breeze for the past seven years. These snippets are based on a large record book kept in a safe at City Hall containing the handwritten minutes of council meetings and other happenings in the Town of Tybee from 1887 until 1925. I have tried to find those items that will be of the greatest interest and amusement to Tybee readers of a century later. I include many names since it was apparent from the start that a lot of Tybee folks of today will know, indeed be related to, some of these people of yesteryear.

Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports July - August - All Quiet: No called missions. In the absence of a good story all I have for the faithful this month, is just “a story.” Recent activities at my parents house “un-earthed” a treasure for squadron 1-A. We discovered a briefcase which contained my dad’s (a founder) scrapbook, it had lots of photos & news paper stories of all the “news-worthy missions” our group had worked over the years. Some of these are almost bizarre by today’s standards but in the 60s that was the best anyone could do. In one such story a Father loses his 2 teenage sons near Bull River. The teens had gone “oystering” and evidently had a problem with the bateau they had filled with oysters. The boat was never found and one son’s body was recovered several days later. Divers from Hunter AAF searched in vain around the bridge in
freezing weather. The area was searched for weeks before authorities “called it off.” A week later the headline in the paper read that the Father would not give up and HE found his son close to where he had entered the water…ONE MONTH earlier! In the 1960s 2 way communications were a luxury no one could afford. A.M. Radio personality “Duane Hatch” ( also a member…I think) would know the unit was working a SAR and would give “subtle” instructions over WSAV radio, ( I think ) which could be as simple as “Its over” come get some coffee. Or “still searching.” Good information to have after searching possibly for hours. I’m just now getting to read these stories, so maybe I’ll get a chance to share more of these with you soon. A view from the porch of the Lighthouse Inn – Yes there is life on the North end of the Island and we will try to let everyone know what is happening with this end of the island from “the porch” and from our wonderful guests.
Back to Normal, Almost… Remember last year at this time? Movie stars were going home and movie fans were going home. Things were quiet again, almost. This year, after a great season where many local businesses had a good rebound from the previous year, it is beginning to slow down when we can take a breath. We don’t dread going Tybee Market! Welcome back Tybee. From the Past… Susie and Stuart had a large group of friends from years ago contacting them this summer. Stuart, a call from a friend from 40 years ago, came to Tybee and had wonderful visit. Then Susie got a call from a friend who was a classmate from her graduating class, hadn’t seen her since. She and her husband came down and we had a wonderful time. Shari and Mickey called from Susie’s Eastern Airlines days. Yep, they came down too and we had a “ball”. Could we be on some peoples “bucket list?” Comments: This was our first trip to a bed and breakfast and we had an excellent time. It was wonderful and relaxing trip and we look forward to returning soon. Hopefully, Zac won’t be on crutches! Thanks for everything. Jessica and Zac, Morristown, NJ More like staying with friends! Thanks for a great vacation! Mary Francis and Greer, Greenville, SC Beautiful home, so relaxing and welcoming – wonderful Southern hospitality–THE BEST VACATION EVER! Ron and Brenda, Cincinnati, OH Thanks so for such a delightful place to spend our 25th anniversary! A perfect place to celebrate. Gail and Barry, Gainesville, GA Thank you so much for everything! We had a wonderful time. We appreciate your gracious hospitality and the delicious breakfasts. We felt so at home. Hope we are able to make a return visit. Lately I have had a craving for good old home cooked Southern fried chicken and apparently it seems to be a trend as I have cooked it at home, been invited to eat it at a friends, shared some with my cheflike daughter, and had a request to write a recipe for a friends favorite food ever! So having said all of that, here is the recipe I think will satisfy that eternal craving for Southern fried chicken. Ingredients for 8 servings (none will go to waste)
6 cups buttermilk 2 tbsp. kosher salt 2 tsp. Tabasco, or hot pepper sauce of choice 2 -3 1/2 to 4 lb. chickens, cut into wing, breast, thigh, and drumstick portions 4 cups all purpose flour, use self rising for extra crunch 1 tbsp. garlic powder 1 tbsp. onion powder 1 tbsp. paprika 2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 tsp. cinnamon (optional) peanut or canola oil for frying (I like Crisco) salt and pepper here is how: Whisk 4 cups buttermilk, 2tbsp. salt and hot pepper sauce in a small bowl. Add chicken; turn to coat and press down to submerge. Cover and chill overnight. (can be done in a ziplock bag) Drain and pat dry. Place a rack on large baking sheet. Whisk flour and next 4 ingredients in another large bowl. Sprinkle chicken generously with salt and pepper. Divide flour mixture between 2 wide shallow bowls or pans. Place 2 cups buttermilk in a medium bowl between the bowls of flour mix. Dredge chicken, 1 piece at a time, in 1 bowl of flour mix, then buttermilk, then in second bowl of flour, tapping off any excess. Place on prepared rack and let air dry for 30 mins. to 1 hour. Meanwhile place another rack on a large baking sheet. Pour enough oil or fat into a large heavy pan (preferably iron) to reach a depth of 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Attach a deep-fry thermometer to side of pot. Or use an instant read thermometer. Heat oil over medium-high heat to 280 to 300 degrees F. Working with 3 pieces of chicken at a time, fry until deep golden brown, turn and partially cover, continue to cook until cooked through, about 12 to 14 mins. per batch. total time. Transfer to rack on baking sheet to drain. Can be kept warm in 200 degree oven. Seems like a lot to do but, so crunchy and delicious!
Hope you enjoy! Chef Espy ~ Hunter House Sighs or Moans - chefespy@bellsouth.net Tybee Breeze

Burton 4-H Center Tybee Island Activities Happy 2nd Birthday Clover!!! August 13th of this year marked the second birthday of the 4H Center’s loggerhead sea turtle, Clover. She was originally taken as a straggler hatchling (meaning she was healthy but didn’t hatch with her siblings) from a nest at North Beach on Tybee Island. We call Clover a “she” but we aren’t actually sure of her gender. Loggerhead sea turtles don’t become sexually mature until they are about 35 years old and there’s no way to tell their gender externally until then! But, we figure that our previous loggerhead, Squirty, was a boy (confirmed by a blood test), so we’ll go with a girl this time! Clover has been growing steadily since I last checked in with you – she is now up to 3,140 grams at the last weigh in. That’s 6.9 pounds for those of you who can’t do conversions in your head (like me!). It’s hard to imagine that just two years ago Clover was only 5 grams, about the weight of a nickel. She is growing slower than Squirty did, who was three times the size he was supposed to be. We consulted with Dr.

Terry Norton at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and decided to slow down Clover’s growth to make it more comparable to how fast she would grow in the wild. We are feeding her shrimp, squid, and fish, as well as a jello mixture that has all of her vitamins & nutrients-I call it her Flintstone’s chewable vitamin! Clover is now at 31cm long (12 inches) on her top shell, called the carapace. We measure the curved length of her shell to get an idea of when she’ll be ready to be released into the Atlantic Ocean. Once she is 50cm curved carapace in length, she’ll be good to go! We plan on releasing her next summer and anticipate that she’ll be the correct length by then. We are already training her on eating live food so she will have the best chance of survival. She’s currently eating live fiddler crabs, blue crabs, fish, jellyfish, and horseshoe crabs and knows exactly how to eat the blue crabs without getting pinched! She is very clever at knowing how to take off the claws first and then taking her time to savor the meal! I would like to remind you that Clover is not a rehabilitation turtle, meaning that she was found perfectly healthy, but we took her in as an ambassador to people all over Georgia. She helps make others aware of what a wonderful creature she is and hopefully plays a role in protecting her species, which is now endangered. To celebrate her second birthday, we had a birthday party at the 4H Center! Clover just loves company and had a grand time with lots of people all paying her attention! Some even got a chance to feed her lunch. We took Clover out of her tank and got a group photo with everyone around all showing their support for her. She’s just so cute it’s hard not to! I will keep you updated in the next year of how Clover is growing and our expectations for a release date. We are really hoping to raise enough money to get her a satellite transmitter. This would allow us to keep tabs on her after she’s released, something we couldn’t afford to do for Squirty. For one year of satellite time and the cost of the transmitter, it’s about $6,000! But, it would be well worth the investment for education of the public, researchers, and students who visit the 4H Center. If anyone has that extra $6,000 lying around that you’ve been wondering what to do with it – let Amy know!
Weight Loss Since Tybee continues to be the “Healthiest Beach in America” and since Savannah and Tybee are continuing to be made famous by Ruby, it seemed appropriate to tackle the overweight/obesity issue this month. I had continued to notice my clothes not fitting as well as they should and realized that my caloric intake had skyrocketed since moving to Tybee and so I decided to jump on the scale. My 6 foot frame does NOT need to weigh 215 pounds. With the incredible dining and dessert experiences on Tybee, let’s just say that I have over-indulged this summer. So it was time for The Beach Doc to follow some of his own advice. I have counseled weight-loss for years since part of my “real job” is as a neurologist and sleep medicine physician necessitated doing so and I even lost 55 pounds about 10 years ago, going from 233 pounds to 178 pounds in about 9 months. Since having done that I have shared my weight-loss story with many patients and have been told that I should share my “secret.” The truth is there is no real secret to weight loss for me. It just comes down to paying attention to calories and exercise. I have found that I can hang with a net caloric intake of 1200 calories and lose about 1.5-2.5 pounds per week. To hit this caloric goal daily, you really have to watch every calorie. I actually end up consuming about 1700-1800 calories per day, but with 70-90 minutes of brisk walking around our beautiful island and on the beach combined with every other day visits to the “Y” weight room to lift weights for 30-45 minutes, I am losing the pounds! As of this writing, I am at 211 and counting. My diet is nothing fancy. I drink water every morning and then after my walk, I drink a Slim-Fast Shake, 190 calories. For lunch, I stick to a sandwich or other low-calorie option and try to keep my calories below 500 for that meal. If I am out, a quick trip to Subway and a Jared’s low-fat sub with appropriate dressings, baked potato chips and a diet cola and I am on my way, 420 calories. By dinner time, I am usually pretty hungry, but with only 610 calories consumed and having burned over 600 calories walking and lifting weights, I am in great shape for dinner. Three fish tacos with salsa, diet coke and salad with 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinaigrette dressing keeps me in the 600 calorie range. No desert for me!!! My hardest time is at night, when I tend to snack. I have found a great plan! I love the Quaker brand caramel corn rice cakes. They have 50 calories per cake and when I drink a carbonated soft drink with them, they puff up in your stomach and really make you feel full. I only drink diet drinks sweetened with Splenda and avoid aspartame always. I see
too many patients with all kinds of problems from aspartame, including headaches, restless leg syndrome, hyperactivity and difficulties with thought processing, just to name a few. Also I avoid all caffeine after lunch. With this plan, I tend to fall under the 1200 calories daily and the weight and inches are falling off. I feel better too! Getting adequate sleep is also key to my weight loss plan, so I try to get a minimum of 6 hours daily. Most people need 6-8 hours to feel well-rested. So join me in making a commitment to attain YOUR ideal body weight. Tybee life can really be a healthy life. So whether you’re vacationing or live here full-time, start now & see how much better you feel working toward a healthier lifestyle. I hope to see you at “Tybee Throws a Fit” or out on the island riding or walking. If you see me, please be sure to tell me how your plan is going. I’ll cheer you on! Until next month, be safe and stay healthy!

The work is going well on our wedding chapel! The original vaulted ceiling beams were lifted back into place on Mon., Aug. 10th and reinforced immediately. Here is a photo of the beams in place and being hoisted. The addition in the rear of the building is the caterer’s kitchen with half bath, changing room/wet bar and half for the groom. Two ADA half baths and bride’s dressing room will be the addition on the front right wing of the building and finally the front porch and double Victorian stairs. Builders are doing a great job. Lannie recently had a family member call us and ask us to help them select some places on Tybee to celebrate their engagement and upcoming wedding. We toured around the island and got some photos for the wedding web site across from the Tybee Light Station and even more on the Southern tip of Tybee. This happy couple invited the groom’s parents and other family members to participate in their engagement photography on Tybee. Steve with Tybee Island Wedding was finishing a wedding and kindly offered to allow his photographer to take some additional (professional) photos of our happy couple. Steve always has a first class and beautiful beach wedding and reception. Steve and Jennifer Palmer have added so much to Tybee with their expertise. There are so many venues for weddings and different ways to get married on Tybee Island! The Tybee Island Wedding Chapel will help promote and provide a new opportunity to encourage Tybee Island to become a wonderful wedding destination. Please drop by and check out our progress. We look forward to seeing you at the chapel. Stacye, Lannie and Catskill Builders’ crew

Experience Luxury, Oceanfront Style By Stacye and Lannie Jarrell One of the wonderful things about Tybee it its diversity: the people, businesses, homes, views, sunsets, sunrises, birds and beaches. Some of us prefer the South beach with its sunrise, an abundant beach that allows a walk onto the exposed sand bars at low tide. Others are thrilled with the quiet North beach, shipping traffic and sunsets over the Savannah River. My family and I are in love with the 28 barrier islands that make up “Little Tybee.” We jet ski, boat and spend any spare time trying to get to a new, quiet spot. Lannie and I share the Back River (Tybee Creek) with anyone who sets aside time to see this amazing area. If you don’t have a boat you can walk on the dock at AJ’s Dockside or stroll on the Southern tip of Tybee to overlook this beautiful area. Our family recently enjoyed a boat ride on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Here are some photos of our boat ride as we enjoyed watching dolphins, egrets and a fabulous sunset. Everyday we are not only blessed to live in this beautiful coastal area we wake up to a sunrise over Tybee Island and panoramic sunset overlooking the marshes that you drive
past every day coming to Tybee. We are all so fortunate to live in such a gorgeous area. A major Brazilian travel agent with 7,000 travel agents loved our area so much he asked for photography with Brazilians on Little Tybee and around our island. He has a promotion called “Vacation Like an American” tailored to promote Tybee Island in his upcoming international campaign. See some photos on Little Tybee that we sent. Lannie & I feel especially thankful that Tybee Island has enjoyed a safe and busy summer. Our staff has worked together under busier than usual circumstances. Their courtesy and professionalism has been inspiring. This past year has been a busy one and the late summer and fall are shaping up nicely. Pirate’s Fest is going to be a huge success this year. The bookings well ahead of last year and bands that are scheduled are going to be amazing! We especially like the fact that it continues into early Sunday afternoon. We look forward to seeing you “in the river” and around Tybee! Stacye, Lannie and the Oceanfront Team

Spiders Aggressive House Spiders Common house spiders usually select their web sites randomly. If the web is not successful in capturing prey then another one is built. In appearance the female is yellow and brown with an off white abdomen in color. Males are smaller than the females and have a longer narrower abdomen. Higher humidity is conductive to this breed of spiders. One of the most common insects captured by them is flies. This can be a good thing. Low humidity is not conductive to their survival. The webs that are made by them are more exposed than those of the black widow and the brown recluse spider, thus making it easier to monitor their activity outside of the home or any other structure. Yellow Sac Spiders Sac spiders are of great medical importance. They are responsible for more bites than any other spider in our states. They are common and can produce a slight swelling and redness on the skin. Their harborage is mainly indoors. Their appearance can be light green to light yellow or orangebrown to red. Their numbers can increase significantly when the weather turns cooler. They can enter the home through many venues including holes in screens, doorjambs, and gaps around household plumbing areas. Outdoors they can be found under decks, door and window frames, woodpiles, eaves and behind shutters. Black Widow Spiders The black widow spider has markings that have a unique design that resembles a shape like an hourglass with spots on their underside. They tend to be aloof and shy in their behavior and build their webs in shallow protected areas. Outside they can harbor around woodpiles, decks, garage areas and any nearby structure. They are thought of as being very dangerous with their bite and venom. The severity of this bite as well as many other spider bites depend the immune system of the individual who was bitten. Most individuals have a healthy immune system. In most cases the bite is no worse than a wasp sting. Just a few years ago a group of entomologists reported the discovery of brown widow spiders with the many of the same habits. Brown Recluse Spiders Brown recluse spiders have a distinct marking that is in the shape of a violin located behind their eyes and are also called Fiddle backs or Violin Spiders. They are light to dark brown or flesh color in appearance. They have long legs that appear
to be bare. They build their nest in secluded areas and are found in mostly the Northern part of our state and the upper states. They usually retreat to the nest when disturbed. Crablike Spiny Orb Weaver These resemble a small crab in shape. The head is reddish brown and their abdomen pale to orange or yellow with reddish-black oval spots and reddish spines. The male is smaller than the female. When spiderlings are born they begin to weave a web in the spring. Their preferred habitats are wooded areas and lawns with varied shrubbery. Their food prey consists of many small insects. Black and Yellow Argiope These are very common in our area. Their legs are black with yellow bands close to the body. Their food is small flying insects. They are closely related to the banana spider. They weave intricate spiraling webs radiating out from the center. The male builds a web within the female’s web that resembles a crisscross pattern. They prefer sunny areas and disperse to the ground when disturbed. NOTE: A good number of the spider species can help to control many outside insects as well as inside with their capability of capture with their webs. For control of the population of all spiders and to help eliminate them it is recommended to do a thorough vacuuming of web areas inside and out and remove the bag to an outside receptacle. Pesticides, dusting and other treatments are very effective in the elimination of their insect food sources which can diminish their numbers greatly. Remove any rock piles or debris. Changing outside lighting that attracts other insects is helpful also.

Goin’ Fishin’ By Janice Bentley Many of us remember going fishing with our dad as a great memory from childhood. The event is free for kids ages 5 – 12 years of age and the parent or legal guardian must accompany the child(ren). Tybee Retired Marine Recognized By Tommy Thompson
Lester “Sarge” White – Commendation from Tybee Police On Thurs., Aug. 12th Lester “Sarge” White, a retired marine, was presented with a commendation from the Tybee Island Police Department for assisting in the apprehension of a burglary suspect on July 10th. A plaque, recognizing his assistance to the police department, was presented to Sarge by Lt. Hagan, of the Tybee Police & Jason Buelterman, Mayor of Tybee, at the Aug. 12th Tybee City
Council meeting. Sarge provides specialized security services to commercial clients on Tybee. On July 10th he received a notification from the Tybee police describing a man suspected of burglarizing condos, storage rooms and beach visitors. Later that evening, while inspecting the property of one of his clients, Beachside Colony, he discovered a man (sort of camping out on the property) fitting the description of the suspect. Sarge apprehended the man, called 911 and detained the suspect until police arrived. The suspect has been identified as Anthony Kockuikov. Police have reported that the suspect has been linked to at least five burglaries, a theft and possibly to several others. Sarge, not a man to mince words, reportedly commented on the arrest, “I think its good riddance for him to be off Tybee.” You can learn more about Sarge & his protective services company by logging onto: www.hiredgunprotectiveservice.com. By Tammy Smith Tybee Sea Turtle Project Coordinator The nesting part of the sea turtle season is coming to a close as I write this article. Female sea turtles come ashore to nest between May 1 and the end of August. At the time of writing, Georgia has had a record year of sea turtle nesting along the coast with a total 1,688 nest (this number will likely change by the time this is published)! Majority of the nests are loggerheads, but the totals include four nests laid by green sea turtles, four leatherback (the largest species) nests and one hawksbill nest. Cumberland leads the state with a total of 445 followed by Blackbeard with 245. Tybee has ten and Little Tybee has 16 loggerhead nests so far. The hatching part of the season began towards the end of July. By the first week of August, Tybee had three nests hatch which sent approximately 362 little baby sea turtles out to sea. Volunteers, with the Sea Turtle Project, were on hand to assist with any disorientation due to artificial lighting. Lights illuminating the beach are still a big issue on Tybee. The Sea Turtle Project is working with the City of Tybee to address the lighting ordinance. Volunteers and city officials have participated in monthly beach surveys, at night, to located light infractions that need to be addressed. You can do your part by turning off outside lights, closing curtains on windows that face the beach, and using a red filtered flashlight if you are on the beach at night. Please remember to keep the beach as dark as possible through the season which runs through the end of October.
Tybee Post Theater News
For its second live performance in forty years, the Tybee Post Theater selects the brightest young star in the galaxy of blues greats, David Jacobs-Strain. This musical phenom was wowing audiences all over the country before he could legally drive a car. He brings his giant talent to Tybee Island on Sun., Oct. 24th, 3pm in a show that will please & amaze everyone who attends. Tickets are only $15 p.p. & benefit the restoration project. David Jacobs-Strain hails from Oregon, but crisscrossing the country to meet a demanding schedule is routine for the young man, he is best described as a slide guitarist & modern roots singer-songwriter whose musical journey begins in the wellspring of Delta blues but ranges far afield from there. In his mid-twenties, he already channels age-old wisdom and heartache with such dexterity, energy, and passion that you feel good, even about feeling bad. He tours nationally & has numerous festival credits, which include the Strawberry Festival, MerleFest, the Lugano Blues to Bop Festival in Switzerland, the Newport Folk Festival, & the Montreal Jazz Festival. He’s also served as faculty at guitar workshops, most notably at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch. In 2008, Boz Scaggs chose him to open for his summer tour. Tickets for this concert are on sale at the Tybee Post website, www.tybeeposttheater.org. Those attending should plan on bringing their own chairs & casual beach-style attire is appropriate. Beverages & snacks will be available for purchase.

Tybee Island Marine Science Center will be getting a new resident very soon. A baby loggerhead sea turtle! Once a nest hatches, the nest inventory will be scheduled. The inventory involves digging up the nest to count the hatched and un-hatched eggs. One of the live stragglers left in the nest will be chosen to be placed in the 800 gallon tank at the center. I will keep you posted when the little guy arrives. I want to give you an update on the turtles and nests found along the Gulf Coast. Mark Dodd, Georgia State Sea Turtle Coordinator, spent the first week of Aug. monitoring & evaluating the sea turtles found in the Gulf of Mexico around the area of the oil leak. This was his second visit to the region and he was able to see a reduction in the amount of oil at the surface. The turtles that were captured were quickly cleaned and released back to sea. Thankfully none of the turtles had too much oil coating on their shells. The plan for moving existing nests around day 50 is being reevaluated. The original plan was to relocate a sea turtle nest, at day 50 of incubation, to Styrofoam coolers and load on a truck to be transported across the state of Florida. The coolers would be housed at a temperature controlled warehouse belonging to NASA. Upon hatching, the babies would be released off the east coast of Florida. This is a tedious task that could affect the imprinting of the baby’s natal beach for future nesting. I will let you know more about this issue in next month’s article. For more information on sea turtles or the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center! The center is located at 1510 Strand Avenue, Tybee Island, GA 31328. If you wish to donate, please call (912)786-5917, or visit the website at www. tybeemsc.org. If you are interested in volunteering with the Sea Turtle Project, please contact the Center or send me an email at turtletammy@bellsouth.net.
♪Thanks For The Mammories!♫ The wheels on this bus went round and round and much more than that! August 19th marked “Mammo Day” for the Tybee Tatas and other lucky and SMART women on Tybee. By George Walker Commander September is here and once again we are planning for “Patriot’s Day” at the Legion. On Sat., Sept. 11th, at 6:30pm, we will get together for a “covered dish” meal and some music. We will also take the time to reflect on the events that happened on that day in 2001. From around the Country, Americans came together to assist all of those devastated by those terrorist acts. Today members of the Armed Forces are working to fight terrorism in places outside the United States in an effort to prevent similar acts from happening here again. Everyone is invited, especially families with a member on active duty in the Armed Forces. We look forward to giving a “Blue Ribbon Banner” to those families in honor of their father, mother, son or daughter. This also gives added meaning to our Tybee Island, Circle of Freedom War Memorial in place on Butler Ave. This Memorial symbolizes what veterans from
American Legion Post 154 Tybee Island, GA all branches of service including the Merchant marines have done throughout the years to protect and ensure our freedom. Bricks for the War Memorial are still available. For info. call or come by the Post after 5pm any day of the week. Bingo is on Fridays at 8pm. Cards go on sale at 7:15pm. Horseshoes will be Saturday evenings at 7pm. Both events are open to the public and everyone is invited to participate. We’re always looking for new members. If you’re interested in the Legion, Auxiliary or Sons of the Legion call the Post (786-5356). As always, Linda or Patti will have the canteen open at 5pm every day and bingo will be Friday night at 8pm. Our monthly Legion meetings are on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7pm with dinner served at 6 pm. For God and Country

Auxiliary Unit #154 Hello Auxiliary Members and Breeze readers, I am very pleased to report that while you are reading the Breeze, the Auxiliary cookbook is going to PRESS! The cookbook will be titled “A Legion of Tybee Cooks” and was named by Joey Burrell who wins a gift certificate to The Crab Shack and a free cookbook. Congratulations Joey! We will be taking pre-orders up through the September meeting so that we can gage the appropriate number to order. The cookbook will have about 400 recipes and will be out in time for the Holidays! Special thanks to Lynn Marston for the wonderful job that she has done with this project. Also, thank you to Vivian Austin for the art! Membership dues of $25 are payable. Please help us meet our quota early this year. Marlene Tomlin is the Second Vice President in charge of membership and is working hard to process your memberships. She would like to have her job done and quota complete so she can take
the remainder of the year off! Please help her out by paying your dues. The Legion will host the September 11 Patriot Day Community Event at the Legion at 6:30 PM. The program will start at 7:30. This will be a covered dish supper followed by a patriotic program. We will be presenting Blue Star Banners to those who have active duty military family members. The Blue Star Banner hung in the window of the home lets others know that a family member is proudly serving in active duty. Please let us know if you wish to receive a Blue Star Banner so that we can be sure that we have enough. You can turn your name in to the bartenders and we will have a Banner for presentation to you during the program. I look forward to seeing you at this very moving tribute. The next meeting will be September 13th with social at 6 and meeting at 7. Until then, I look forward to seeing you at the Legion. For God and Country Kaye C. Starfish Scopes September 2010 Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Every reason you have for doing what you did, is sound. Be grateful that you have a good network of friends and family. Libra (September 22 - October 22) Your suspicions may prove correct as you super-sleuth your way around the office. Take everything you’ve got and run like the wind. Bad things are afoot. I mean, can’t you smell it? Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Scroll further down any web pages you access this month, just in case there are hidden clauses you aren’t aware of. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) If everything that’s ever been said about you is true, why are you such a butthead? Good fortune seems to be raining down on everyone but you. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Someone will ask you what you want to do this weekend. That may seem like a good time to say “What am I, psychic?” It’s not, though. Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) Dancing around like a fairy is a great way to lose weight and strengthen those legs. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Remember: good people are good because they gain wisdom through failure. Happily, there’s every reason to believe you’ll become much better soon! Aries (March 21 - April 19) Your desire for more money will never come true unless you get off your butt and do something. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) As you are walking along, you will notice someone leaning back in a chair. You should stop and insist that they bring their seatback to a full upright and locked position until the captain has turned off a sign. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) You’ll have one of those baffling moments when you’re sure you spelled a word correctly, but your spell checker will still complain. Ask someone nearby how they spell it. They’ll spell it the same way you do, much to your Rolaids. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) The thought of you losing your mind is making you lose your mind. If you ever get out of that hole, the chances are that you’re still going to be a neurotic plague of badness. Leo (July 23 - August 22) Wake up in a trash-can again? Don’t let your drinking get you down, go and have a beer. Actions take a moment, consequences last a lifetime.

By Joni Woodcock Is there any such thing as a secret on Tybee? Are we even allowed to have any, or is it against some unwritten rule? I love secrets because they make me smile (for the most part!) I feel like a little kid when I have a secret or know one. Just remember, a secret is something you tell one person at a time and wait to see how long it takes to hit the other side of the island. It is absolutely amazing! Okay, let’s get to the fun stuff first since that’s what we do best!!! The “Cheese Burglar” incident was one of the funniest stories I’ve heard lately. Allegedly, this chick stole a cheese burger from a local establishment, and then proceeded to steal someone’s bikini WHILE THE PERSON WAS STILL WEARING IT!!! Needless to say, charges are pending! Speaking of weird, martini glasses were spotted at the Quarter. By press time, they had already been exposed to Bonnie! Check this out, Vinnie was out dressed as a wiener. Why, you might ask yourself? Apparently Jenna was hungry... or something.... While at Social having Margaritas, Mike, Dee, Al and I actually saw a local idiot trying to suck a beta fish through a straw. The names have been changed to protect the guilty! We have a new dentist in town. Her name is Jessanna S m i t h and the practice is called “Tybee Teeth.” Our beloved Mike Sullivan was there as well as Jason and Bill. There was a social gathering for the ribbon cutting and a good time was had by all.

Al and I went on a bar tour between Social, Café Loco and Top Sail. At Loco, we ran into Emily and Henry, who are on a mission to sell the deadly Jack Daniels. Remember Loco has S.I.N. (Service Industry Night) on Sunday nights!!! At Top Sail, we had some delicious appetizers and were entertained by “The Beautiful Bodies.” At Fannie’s Roma and Essie P. entertained Ms. Jeann Olds, who is a registered chef from Mobile, AL. Ms. Olds said this is her first vacation in 51 years and she loves Tybee!!! I went into Sting Ray’s to check out Ray and the Crew. I had the soft-shell crab sandwich and it and the sweet tea were to die for. I still didn’t see Joe Inglesby sorry a@*. You can run, but you can’t hide! Oh my God, we had the best time at Huc A Poo’s on 80’s night with the band Great White Lion Snake. Everyone dressed up in 80’s gear and let’s just say there was some intoxication going on! Doesn’t Katie look just like Courtney Love from the “Live Through This” album cover! Beth and Jane were also there in costume. Don’t forget to check out their shop “ T y b e e Artworks” while at the Poo. A l s o , w h e n you’re in the mood for a scooter ride, go by and check out Maureen and Gordon of “Mogo’s” fame while you’re in the neighborhood. Since Janeen s a y s R . B . is the nicest m a n she has
ever known, why was she calling him Rocky the other night? Enquiring minds want to know!!! Danny Hill is a Locks of Love donor!!! How are you hair farmers doing out there? Let me know about your progress and we’ll document it in the Breeze!!! I went into Doc’s to get Mike Manitta’s melt-in-yourm o u t h prime rib sandwich (which Catfish tried to chew my arm off for!) While I was there, I learned about Miss Sylvia’s recent accident. Mike is making a documentary about Miss Sylvia which he will enter in the Savannah Beach Film Festival in October. Those wishing to donate to Miss Sylvia’s chairlift fund can contact the Tybee Arts Association. Richard Adams has set up a Pay Pal account at TybeeArts.org. for you folks from out of town who want to donate to this worthy cause. We love you Miss Sylvia and wish you a speedy recovery!!! I ran into Brian and Amber at Bernie’s pm a Saturday night. They have set October 16 as the date for their wedding. Congratulations! Also, Janice and Gordon are going to tie the knot with date pending. We wish you the best! Our buddy Carl Conaway passed away recently and a celebration of his life was held at the Legion, where folks recalled their favorite memories of Carl. Over 100 people showed up to send him a loving farewell. Vaya con Dios! L e e Hayes gets the “Blinded by Dental Floss Award” AGAIN!
