WHAT IS AN ORIGIN STORY?
MEET LEVI MILLER Australian actor Levi Miller is making his major film debut as Peter in the movie Pan. Scholastic recently sat down with Levi to talk about Pan and books!
Every legend has a beginning and reading an origin story—the history of how a hero ended up with his or her amazing abilities—can be even more wonderful than the original story.
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the movie? Levi: There’s not much I can tell you about now, but I can tell you that Peter is a young boy who’s lived in an orphanage. There’s a lot of adventure in the film and Peter’s part of it.
In the new live-action film Pan, Peter (actor Levi Miller) is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with a rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life, those qualities do not exactly fly. Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors, and fairies called Neverland.
Q: Some fans have strong feelings about movies based on books. Do you prefer to read the book first before the movie, or does seeing the movie inspire you to read the book? Levi: Yes, I do prefer to read the book before seeing the movie because you can learn more about the story with books.
Scottish author Sir James Barrie’s now world-famous character, Peter Pan, first appeared onstage in his play in the early 1900s and then again in Barrie’s 1911 book Peter and Wendy.
Q: What book would you recommend to a kid your age? Levi: Definitely The Hunger Games!
But when Pan director Joe Wright read the script written by Jason Fuchs he knew he was looking at an all-new window into this classic story. Although it might seem like an adaptation, it’s actually a prequel that shows how Peter, Hook, Tiger Lily, and the other characters became the icons we know and love today. Mr. Wright explained it like this, “For me it was really a kind of reframing of the Peter Pan story. As long as we stayed true to the heart of Barrie’s book…then I felt we were free to move as we felt, and we did.” He continued, “I think the only way to really write and direct films is just to follow your own imagination.”
Q: Imagine you’re by yourself with the most awesome book in the world…in the most perfect place to read that you can imagine anywhere in the world and you have all the time in the world. Where are you? Levi: I think I would be in a medieval castle in an old library.
