MAKING A DIFFERENCE A REVIEW OF OUR COMMUNITY, EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT 2015.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

INTRODUCTION AT PD PORTS WE FEEL A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY TO SHOW SUPPORT WHERE WE CAN TO OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND PLAY AN ACTIVE PART IN IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE. As one of the UK’s largest port groups, we are able to use our resources to enhance and provide benefits to the communities in which we operate. Over the past five years, we’ve invested over £80m across the Group in developing, upgrading and enhancing our business capabilities to meet the demands of our customers. At Teesport, we are positioning the Port as the Northern Gateway for containerised goods destined for the North. The completion of Teesport’s £35m quay reconstruction project provides considerable flexibility for the Ports fast growing container business as well as enhancing its bulk handling capabilities. In the Humber, our operational platform continues to grow with the acquisition of Groveport strengthening the Group’s bulk handling capabilities.

2

By investing heavily in our port infrastructure, we have created a solid and sustainable platform for today and beyond. And our investment extends to our greatest asset, our people. At PD Ports we continually develop and expand the skills and knowledge of our workforce to ensure we have a team of extraordinary people delivering extraordinary results. PD Ports takes its role very seriously within the community. We understand the positive impact we can have on our local regions and people. Continuing to invest in our communities, this year PD Ports donated circa £22,000 to causes throughout the UK. Throughout this report you’ll see the activities we’ve been taking part in and the positive impact this has had on those involved. David Robinson Group CEO

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

IN THE COMMUNITY EACH YEAR PD PORTS PLEDGES ITS SUPPORT TO A NUMBER OF CHARITIES AS A WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

In 2015 PD Ports engaged with Business in the Community, Butterwick Hospice, Daisy Chain, the High Tide Foundation and the RSPB. Throughout the year, PD Ports was involved in a number of different activities to support the long-term stability of these charitable organisations.

BUSINESS IN THE COMMUNITY PD Ports has been an active member of Business in the Community (BiTC) since joining in 2011. We have become firmly established in a network of multinational household names, small local businesses and public sector organisations that all stand for responsible business. Over the past three years, two of PD Ports’ employees spent time on secondment to BiTC as Business Connectors for the North East. The purpose of this secondment role was to focus on helping to tackle local community service issues. Both Business Connectors made a positive difference in the community and their time spent on secondment helped their professional development.

AT BITC’S RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS AWARDS IN 2015, PD PORTS GAINED SHORTLISTED STATUS IN THE ‘FRESHFIELDS WORK INCLUSION AWARD’ AND RECEIVED RE-ACCREDITATION OF A ‘BIG TICK’, FIRST AWARDED LAST YEAR FOR THE ‘INSPIRING YOUNG TALENT’ CATEGORY. On the Humber, PD Ports’ Director, Port & Site Services, Paul McGrath, was appointed to the Yorkshire and Humber Advisory Board for BiTC. Meeting quarterly, the board will discuss the community and environmental issues facing the area and propose ways to help tackle these issues through business engagement.

4

Liz Needleman, Area Director for BITC England East, commented on Paul’s appointment: “I am delighted that Paul has agreed to join our Yorkshire & Humber Advisory Board. He has already demonstrated leadership on the Responsible Business agenda, and I’m sure he will make a very valuable contribution to our thinking going forward.”

During 2015 through BiTC’s Business Class programme, a link was forged with Oasis Academy Immingham enabling PD Ports to provide support to its young people. In 2016, PD Ports will extend into Goole and Scunthorpe connecting with educational facilities to provide a link with business.

£56K RAISED FOR THE BUTTERWICK HOSPICE BUTTERWICK HOSPICE Since 2011, PD Ports has been a corporate partner of the Butterwick Hospice, a charity that exists to freely provide specialist pain, symptom control, complementary therapies, counselling and bereavement care to adults and children suffering from life limiting illnesses across the North East. Amongst other fundraising activities, for the last four years, PD Ports employees have taken part in the Great North Run raising circa £56k for the Butterwick Hospice. At Butterwick Hospice’s inaugural Bake Off, PD Ports entered a team producing three bakes to compete against the efforts of local companies. Although the PD Ports team didn’t win, the whole event raised over £10,000 and provided a great afternoon for all who attended.

In 2015, PD Ports became involved with Daisy Chain in Stockton-on-Tees, a charity which provides a range of services for those affected by autism, including support and activity groups for the whole family from its 5.5 acre farm in Norton. In September, a number of employees from PD Ports' finance department donated their time and resources to volunteer at Daisy Chain’s Farm. The team of around 30 employees spent a day away from their Middlesbrough-based office to carry out repair and maintenance work.

Judith Haysmore, Daisy Chain Chief Executive said: “We were delighted that staff from PD Ports volunteered for the day at our site in Norton. Having a working farm to run means that there is always something that needs to be done, and having companies such as PD Ports provide volunteers for the day makes such a difference to Daisy Chain and our families that we support. We want to thank everyone that came and mucked in for the day and hope that they enjoyed the experience.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

ZETLAND FM PD Ports was the inaugural Foundation Partner for Redcar and Cleveland’s first ever community radio station, Zetland FM. Live since August 2015, the station, based in the Redcar Beacon, is growing its listeners week by week. This partnership has opened up a whole new media through which PD Ports can engage with the local communities that surround Teesport.

THE RSPB PD Ports has been a supporter of The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and its nature reserve in Teesside, Saltholme for five years.

SALTHOLME, WHICH SEES AROUND 75,000 - 80,000 VISITORS PER ANNUM, THRIVES IN THE MIDST OF INDUSTRY NEAR SEAL SANDS. 8

Due to its proximity to the River Tees and the Ports of Teesport and Hartlepool, PD Ports helps to raise awareness in the area, support the continued preservation of the site and the protection of birds and other wildlife.

Set up by PD Ports and Casper Shipping in 2012, the award-winning High Tide Foundation is a registered charity connecting young people and businesses on Teesside with a focus to develop skills and opportunities in a structured framework providing measurable, long term results for all. Since the charity was established, more than 50 employees from PD Ports have engaged at some level with High Tide from across 15 different departments. Due to the nature of the charity and its relationship with the Port and the River Tees, there will always be a close tie between PD Ports and High Tide. In 2015, employees continued to provide support with organising educational programmes, provide port tours and presentations as well as organising its first annual fundraising ball.

We see High Tide as integral to our connection with young people across the region where we can make a positive contribution to their learning and life experiences whilst raising awareness of the maritime industry. Three years on from launching, the High Tide Foundation has connected with over 1,000 young people and gained support from over 60 private sector businesses to deliver engaging and inspiring industry-led work experience.

ASIDE FROM EQUIPPING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH SKILLS, ONE OF THE GREATEST BENEFITS OF HIGH TIDE IS ITS DETERMINATION TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE BUILD THEIR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND BELIEVE IN THEIR OWN ABILITY AND WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE.

In 2015, the High Tide Foundation hosted its first fundraising ball. Heavily supported by PD Ports and Better, High Tide's design agency, the event, held at Wynyard Hall, proved to be an enjoyable night for all raising over £24,000.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

ENVIRONMENT AT PD PORTS WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN SUSTAINABLE CODES OF PRACTICE TO MINIMISE ANY ADVERSE IMPACT ON OUR SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT. WE RECOGNISE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AS ONE OF OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND A KEY COMPONENT OF SOUND BUSINESS PERFORMANCE. To ensure we are reducing our impact on the environment, we’ve put in place a team of Environmental Champions at each of our operating locations. These teams ensure we continue to adhere to environmental legislation and strive to keep improving our environmental performance.

PD Ports introduced its own environmental management system in 2012. Since then the business has achieved International Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001, one of the first UK ports businesses to achieve this exacting qualification. We continue to maintain this certification and operate as a minimum in

POWERING BUSINESS USING SOLAR ENERGY During the warehouse upgrades at Billingham for long-term customer Taylors of Harrogate, solar panels were installed on the roof to provide a source of renewable energy for the site. In the eight months the solar panels have been operational they’ve already produced more energy than targeted to achieve. The power generated in just over half a year is enough to power 12 houses for an entire year.

SINCE 2012, THROUGH MULTIPLE INVESTMENTS, OUR BILLINGHAM SITE HAS SEEN A MONTHLY AVERAGE ELECTRICITY COST REDUCTION OF 42%

compliance with all relevant legal requirements applicable to our business. Across the business we’ve seen a number of environmental initiatives that have reduced the business’ impact on the environment and provided considerable benefit.

PD Ports is the statutory harbour authority at Teesport and is responsible for managing the river traffic for the ports of Teesport and Hartlepool, ensuring safe navigation and maintaining the required channel depth. Our Conservancy department manage this using a fleet of dredgers and service vessels to assist with the river management.

During maintenance of these vessels, water must be pumped out which can contain waste oil. PD Ports manufactured a system which separates the oil from the water so that it can be reused. Where many others would send this water to an external company to process, PD Ports is able to do this in-house.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

CONTINUING TO KEEP THE RIVER CLEAN

In 2015, the oil separation system processed around 200,000L of water & oil, resulting in 20,000L of reusable oil being recovered.

REDUCING OUR ENERGY USE Throughout the Group there has been a push to reduce the amount of energy the business uses. To raise awareness amongst staff, a campaign was launched to encourage employees to turn off electrical equipment when not in use and highlight the impact their actions can have on the energy consumption of the business.

Energy saving initiatives have been put in place throughout the business including the use of energy saving alternatives when an upgrade is needed.

This initiative will continue as PD Ports looks for further solutions to reduc足e its impact on the environment.

AS A RESULT OF THE AWARENESS RAISING CAMPAIGN, PD PORTS ELECTRICITY USAGE HAS REDUCED BY 25% SINCE 2012. 11

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

OUR PEOPLE AT PD PORTS WE RECOGNISE THAT OUR PEOPLE ARE OUR BUSINESS. IT’S VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE PROVIDE OUR EMPLOYEES WITH A POSITIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT WITH THE RIGHT PLATFORM TO GROW AND DEVELOP IN THEIR CAREERS.

LEADERSHIP COURSES To encourage the progression of employees we established a number of leadership courses. Working with Stockton Riverside College, PD Ports established management training programmes on Teesside for dock workers, team leaders and service managers. Stockton Riverside College developed the training programme in conjunction with PD Ports to meet its specific needs.

12

Undertaking a certificate in Team Leading, General Operative Andrew Smith, 47, of Loftus, who works in the container terminal at Teesport, said: “It is fantastic that PD Ports is giving people in the workforce the chance to train and improve themselves within the company.” General Operative, Graham Ableson, 47, of Middlesbrough, who works on rail infrastructure, added: “It shows that the company values its employees, giving us the opportunity to go up the ladder.”

Throughout 2015 we’ve continued to support our employees in their development. We’ve also continued to address the potential future skills gap by introducing and continuing programmes to ensure the long-term stability of our business.

On the Humber, 19 employees completed an Institute of Leadership and Management course at North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe. The aim of the course was to give those with supervisory and managerial aspirations the knowledge and skills beneficial to those roles in order for them to progress within the company and further develop. Comprising of various topics, the course provided insight into management communication, strategy and implementation, as well as the know-how to understand financial management.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

LOGISTICS ACADEMY To help tackle the region’s growing skills gap within the logistics sector, Stockton Riverside College, with the backing of PD Ports’ logistics division, PD Portcentric Logistics, joined forces with employers across the region to create a Logistics Academy. Launched in conjunction with NETA Training Group, ‘Think Logistics’, and national charity, Career Ready, the Logistics Academy will look to raise awareness of the logistics sector and the career opportunities available to young people. The first cohort of 14 young people started in October and will complete the course later this year. The programme will include a number of workplace visits to companies in the local area and each student will be provided with a mentor to support them throughout the duration. From this they will gain a better understanding of logistics and the number of different career paths that can be undertaken in this wide and varying workplace.

STAFF SUPPORT SCHEME As a business we actively encourage community-wide initiatives and support personal interests and pursuits of our employees through the staff support scheme. From September 2005 to date, the Group has contributed over £50K to the community wide activities of its employees and relatives through the business’ employee support scheme. Contributions to date have provided support for the ongoing building of communities in Peru, the skills development of sports leaders in South Africa and equipment for children suffering with muscle deficiencies. Local schools and sports clubs have received resources to enable young children to learn about communication, team building, problem-solving, building confidence and developing leadership skills through their ongoing activities. One such beneficiary was Hartburn Primary School, who received the funds to purchase wooden building blocks for the outdoor play area. Put forward by a member of staff whose child attends the school, the entry was selected

providing the school with extra funds to acquire this outdoor kit. The new equipment is used by the early years’ children, which includes nursery and reception ages, to help improve moving and handling skills, encourage creativity and the sharing of ideas to problem solve. The effect of the staff support scheme is extended beyond the groups it helps. It demonstrates support and care, for the welfare our employees and their lives outside of the workplace. As a business this further drives our agenda to be an employer of choice.

PROVIDING APPRENTICESHIPS FOR 15 YEARS 14

PD Ports has been providing apprenticeships for 15 years, seeing over 70 people begin their careers in a number of different vocations including engineering, dock operations and administration. Apprenticeships are important to PD Ports as a way to bring new talent into the company, ensure greater succession planning and provide vital job opportunities for young people in the area. In 2015, two new apprentices were taken on in the engineering department at Teesport through local training provider, NETA Training Group. Jonathan Kinson, electrical apprentice, and Luke Jackson, mechanical apprentice, will complete their apprenticeship with PD Ports undertaking a one-year training program followed by on-the-job training at Teesport for three years.

Already part of the PD Ports engineering team, Daniel Emmerson and Drew Reeder, successfully completed their apprenticeships. After a four-year training course, both apprentices gained excellent academic qualifications in their specialist areas. Daniel and Drew are now employed as full time engineers at Teesport.
