When I look back on 2012 it was a very interesting year. The west went from flooding in 2011 to drought the last half of 2012 The east was very dry in places with feed shortages and high prices. The drought in the U.S.A. saw cow numbers continue to decline and it was these lower cow numbers that have caused the slaughter price for cows to bounce back after the temporary closure of the XL plant

The early fall calf run was better than most were anticipating, as the high feed grain prices made locking in a profit impossible The lack of calves out in the industry was also experienced with a shorter, smaller run than normal through many auction markets. There were many $1,100 dollar calves this fall proving that pounds definitely paid The Charolais calves, at the feeder sales I was at, made you feel good about having Charolais. The heavy Charcross calves were the sale toppers on a per dollar basis Sure, some of the light weight calves sold for more per pound, but in total dollars they did not compare

At Agribition the commercial cattle show was smaller and Charolais didn’t win overall this year, but a pen of 5 Charcross silver steers from the Lakeland College, Vermilion, AB weighing 944 lbs brought the most money of any pen at $1,152 each.

Through all of this, the enthusiasm felt in Agriculture and the cattle business is exciting. The commercial bred heifer market has been stellar with heifers selling for more money than ever before in some parts of the country How about $3,300 for Red Angus/Simmental cross heifers in Swift Current in early December. Incredible

The fall show season saw Charolais do very well across the country with more numbers in most of the shows, winning many all breed championships. Thanks again to all the exhibitors for putting Charolais out in front of the industry with your hard work and dedication Next year the National Show is going to Edmonton so I hope you will start planning now to be there.

The fall female sales have also been very strong with a few left to go at time of writing. We have seen not only some new and young breeders

From the Field

starting herds again this year, we have also seen a number of established herds expanding their numbers. The strong Charolais bull market this past spring has many shoring up their numbers and quality in anticipation of the years ahead. Visiting with many breeders this fall it seems that the bull pens have already been getting a work out with most anticipating an even stronger sale season next spring. Don’t sell your bull pen short. The commercial market is strong and it is time for all of you to realize a nice profit from the years of hard work invested in the purebred industry.

Bull sale season is just around the corner and now is the time to plan your pictures, videos, advertising and promotion of your bull pen Craig and I will be hitting the road right after the new year so contact us early.

All of us at the Charolais Banner want to thank you for the support over the past year and wish you a very Merry Christmas and may 2013 be an even more profitable Charolais year.

Until next time, Helge

Agribition Semen Auction

Now that it is December, I am starting to see Christmas decorations going up reminding me I should probably get my shopping done. It also means that the fall shows are over, proving to have been a good fall for our breed having Supreme female at Agribition, as well as good representation at other shows across the country

Speaking of Agribition, I would like to send out a huge thank you to those breeders who donated semen for our annual semen auction, as well as those who purchased the semen.

Contributions from both sides are greatly appreciated.

Calving followed by bull sales and breeding are also just around the corner This can be an exciting but also very busy time for breeders For the youth it provides an opportunity to get out and see what breeders have to offer, and what genetics to possibly use on their 4 H or junior projects. How does free semen sound? The genetics program is a tremendous opportunity for youth to get their hands on some superior genetics to breed their female.

regarding the way conferences run or any of the programs feel free to contact any of your National Board members The essay topic will also be decided so watch for that to be made available in the New Year.

For me the cold days in December let me look back to summer and CCYA is always a part of that. I know that the organizers in Ontario are busy getting ready for next year and I know like all others, it won’t disappoint For updates on the conference, information on all the programs, or if you have any questions or concerns check out the website youth.charolais.com or contact any of your national board members

With Change Comes Opportunity

As many of you know, the executive committee of the Canadian Charolais Association made the decision not to renew the contract of general manager Neil Gillies. This was not an easy decision and definitely one that involved a great deal of discussion and thought on the part of the committee In the end, there were concerns with the role of the general manager and his ability to adapt to a changing position With the help of an HR consultant, a fair severance was offered and the process was handled in a professional manner We thank Neil for all he has done for our association and wish him well in his future endeavours.

With this change, comes opportunity to grow as an Association. Moving forward, the first order of business is to re evaluate the duties of the general manager We need to identify the priorities and parameters of the position, as well as define the role of the general manager within our association Not only will the general manager’s role be redefined, I feel it is time to review all that we do as an association We have become complacent with our position in the industry. As the industry has continued to change and evolve, we have sat (sometimes on the sidelines) and watched as others within the industry have passed us by. It is time for us as a breed to become leaders again

During this time of transition the board is working on other projects as well Genomics research is definitely one of the hottest topics in the industry and one that we need to be a part of in order to improve our breed The board is definitely taking a more proactive approach when it comes to genomic research. As breeders, we need to

realize the importance of genomics research and the key contribution we can make; the more samples that are tested and the more data that is collected now, the more accurate this new tool will be in helping us make breeding decisions in the future

Another project is by the Public Relations Committee. It has produced a new brochure featuring operations which have successfully used Charolais genetics An updated poster will be available in the New Year. Both the Public Relations Committee and the Market Development Committee are looking for ways to get the best exposure for the Charolais breed as the industry continues to change.

Regardless of the changes in the office, the breeders are still in capable hands with their registry needs Lois Chivilo, Judy Cummer and Mel Reekie are all available in the office for assistance Cynthia Beck is available to the French membership as well.

As the New Year approaches, we should all look forward with great optimism. Feeder calf sales this past fall were better than many expected With Charcross calves leading the way, more commercial cow calf producers will be rediscovering our breed. This renewed commercial interest should lead to strong bull sales in the spring, which truly are the back bone of our industry.

The Canadian Charolais Association Board of Directors is dedicated to improving our Association. We, the Charolais breeders, also need to be dedicated in moving this breed forward and being leaders in the industry

Season's Greetings, Wade Beck

Scrotal (Testicular Size) Variations

Purebred breeders are constantly striving for the perfect reproductive bull and go to great measures to select for scrotal size. It has long been accepted that scrotal size is a good measure of sperm production Larger testicles generally should produce more sperm and the bull on average is more fertile. Over time purebred producers have on average been very successful increasing the testicular size of bulls in all breeds, with testicular size being moderate to highly heritable (0 4 75) There are still breed differences that are acceptable and various lines within breeds will have differences in testicular size. In my opinion, what needs to happen now in research is looking at maximum limits in scrotal size Over my career testicular size has crept up to the point where we are starting to see a detriment to fertility when yearlings get up over the forty plus centimeter mark. So there does appear to be an upper limit for sure

In regards to testicular development researchers Drs Kastelic and Thundathil at the UCVM (University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine) found nutrition both in utero and especially early in life (before puberty) had a profound effect on testicular development. There was a definite increase in testicular size on bull calves on an adequate nutritional diet versus those on a restricted intake diet The old adage of farmers saying you can’t starve the head or testicles out of an animal is false. Seeing bull calves on a poor nutritional diet their head and horns (if horned) and testicles do seem normal size but the optical illusion is if the animal is thin and stunted those parts automatically seem bigger So the bull calves and their mothers have to be on a good plane of nutrition early especially in the calves first four months of life. This should work well as this is the same time cows need to be on a rising plane of nutrition in order to rebreed

Contrary to this, overfeeding during or after puberty to try and compensate for poor growth earlier will have a detrimental effect on sperm production and testicular size. Too much fat in the scrotum alters the thermoregulatory effect and I have seen in my career too many fat bulls with small scrotal size as varying degrees of testicular degeneration have occurred from the testicles being too warm for too long. Some purebred producers definitely get their bulls too fat which is why in my experience there seems to be a higher infertility rate with overfit show bulls. There is a positive correlation as back fat measurements go up fertility goes down.

When we look at nutrition not only are energy and protein levels critical but also trace minerals (micro and macro minerals) are critical to testicular development Proper balancing of the ration with careful attention to the calcium phosphorus ratio as well as adequate levels of the micro minerals such as copper zinc and selenium all play in the equation The bottom line is growing cattle need to be on a balanced mineral program throughout their lives. We sometimes fail to realize that especially our bull’s calves undergo such rapid growth that they can outstrip their nutritional requirements when growing so rapidly We also need to make sure other aspects are not robbing nutrition such as internal parasites (worms) or lice. Many years ago, it was reported that chelated minerals because of their increased absorption would help increase scrotal size. I found this claim unfounded and the bottom line is have your nutritionist balance the ration for your class of cattle and the growth rate they are on and include the vitamins and minerals in this package I state again that high energy diets post weaning can hinder reproductive development and function in young bulls if taken to excess

Age at puberty will of course affect scrotal size and some bull calves do undergo very rapid testicular growth

from eleven to fifteen months of age. Generally, the greater the body weight leads to reduced age at puberty You as purebred breeders have also desired early maturing as bulls pass their semen tests easier and they can be sold at a younger age as a satisfactory breeder and breed well as a yearling. Some genetic lines do not reach puberty as early and as a result, testicular development is slower and they may not pass semen exams until some time after or around fifteen months of age.

Testicular size is moderately to highly heritable so depending on the bull, selecting for it should be rewarding the majority of times. However keep in mind the cow is half the genetic part of the equation so she will have an influence in the outcome as well. Some bulls also tend to pass their genes on more consistently. I have seen certain bulls never sire a calf with below average testicles and while others are very inconsistent This is called incomplete dominance Mistakes have been made purchasing U.S.A. bulls and keep in mind their scrotal measurement system is much different. US bulls will measure two to five cm less in Canada when measured by Canadian veterinarians under our system Also some of the old scrotal tapes used to stretch, leading to falsely low measurements. Differences between veterinarians and even between the same veterinarian measuring a bull twice is only one to two cm because of the newer “reliabull” scrotal tape with the tension device Arguments are always made that certain bulls have longer narrower testicles and although some variation in shape definitely exists selection away from the straight sided scrotum is desirable

I have one large herd where we measure bulls at 9 10 months age to cull and then again at semen checking time (12 13 months) and the growth patterns though puberty can be very variable with all other factors being similar. Testicle growth over the three

months can vary from a couple of cm to eight cm, which is a huge variation Be wary purebred breeders that the exact age of yearling bulls is known because, if you calve later or most of your bull calves were born at the end of the calving season or calving was moved back and they average one month younger when measuring then years previous, this will have a huge difference on average scrotal size, everything else being equal In the US they adjust scrotal measurements all to one year of age. This may help with age discrepancies but from what I have seen their estimates to adjust are low This means many bulls bought in the US have the adjusted scrotal size on an overly inflated scrotal size score

The final points are as purebred breeders be ever cognizant of scrotal size when selecting your herdsires and keep your average scrotal size around the breed average or above and you will cull very few bulls. Look after nutrition as they are developing and don’t get them too fat after puberty and hopefully there will be no big surprises come semen checking in the spring
