As I write this, the fall shows are finished and I must say that the enthusiasm in the Charolais barns this fall was exceptional. We have many young breeders that are out there promoting the breed with new ideas and it is exciting. The upbeat atmosphere is contagious and if you didn’t make it to a show, you missed out. The National show in Edmonton had a very large crowd watching the whole show and an even bigger one for the Championship. Some thought it was the biggest crowd they have ever seen watching the show there.

The fall sale run for the most part has been very good with some new breeders buying some numbers from the dispersal sales and some breeders that have only been in for a few years expanding and improving the quality of their growing herds. The most interesting buyers I found were the established breeders that know you can’t stop improving the quality in your herd. We saw some breeders this fall who really didn’t need any more cows but whose philosophy is that you can always buy a top female and cull two from the bottom. We have also seen some breeders from other breeds adding another breed to their operations which will be interesting. There has been more interest from the U.S. this fall and with the cow numbers down across that country, I would think there will even be more commercial females finding their way into breeding herds down there.

We have seen some differences in prices between sales and even within some sales, that are bringing to light the dollar advantage of marketing and

promotion. This encompasses many aspects from showing, attending and purchasing at sales, not only to improve your herd but to get your name in the public light. It also involves the obvious advertising at all levels of the industry, community, 4 H and youth support as well as helping fellow producers, breeders and your association whenever possible. It involves contacting all your past customers and believing in and standing behind what your produce. Successfully marketing your product involves so many pieces and the more pieces you have the better your outcome should be. Doing all this is not cheap or easy, but the dollar rewards will hopefully offset all the costs and more.

One of the easiest ways to sabotage all of your marketing efforts is by being negative towards other breeders and their programs or cattle. Nothing can chase customers and fellow breeders away faster than someone who bad mouths others in the industry. Stay positive and all of your marketing efforts will be rewarded.

As one season ends another begins and bull sales are just around the corner. Make sure you do everything you can to maximize the potential revenue of your bull pen. Proper nutrition is the first thing and using a balanced ration that will maximize the gains but minimize the health problems is a must. Then the promotion and marketing comes into play. Making sure you have the best pictures possible and promoting them through all avenues is good. Paper, internet and radio advertising are all at your disposal. Last spring there were even some interesting results from advertising in places like Kijiji,

which is free. The marketing options today have never been broader so don’t pull up short.

The Canadian Charolais Association’s press release is in this issue and you will see they have hired a very experienced consultant, Doug Blair, to take us along the path of genomics and eventually the use of this technology to enhance and make more accurate our EPD. This is very important stuff and the speed at which we can incorporate this into our tool shed, the better and faster we will be able to improve the traits we want to select for. The point I want to make here is that we all need to participate and DNA test our herd sires and then back it up with as much accurate and complete performance data on their progeny as possible. We need to include birth, weaning and yearling weights as well as scrotal and ultrasound data. If we are going to move the breed ahead faster with more accurate EPD at a younger age, we will need to do the necessary paper work. Again I emphasize that you send in the data on all the calves in the herd as the bigger birth weights and poor calves are needed in the contemporary groups to strengthen the EPD numbers of your top calves.

As we approach the holiday season I want to wish you all the best and may you have quality time with family and friends not just at this time of year but in the new year as well. Au moment d’écrire ces lignes les expositions d’automne seront terminées et je dois dire que l’enthousiasme sur les sites d’expo Charolais cet automne a été exceptionnelle. Nous avons beaucoup de jeunes éleveurs qui travaille à la promotion de la race avec de nouvelles idées ,ce qui est passionnant. L’atmosphère optimiste est contagieuse et si vous n’avez pas pu vous rendre à un expo , vous avez manqué quelque chose. À l’expo National de Edmonton beaucoup de spectateurs se sont déplacés pour le jugement et encore plus pour le championnat . Certains pensent que c’était la plus grosse foule qu’ils ont vu à cette exposition.

Les ventes d ‘automne sont en grande partie terminées et ont été très bonne avec quelques nouveaux éleveurs qui achètent beaucoup dans les ventes de dispersion et certains éleveurs continuent depuis quelques années à l’expansion et l’amélioration de la qualité de leurs troupeaux. Nous avons vu certains éleveurs cet automne qui n’ont vraiment pas besoin d’augmenter leur troupeau mais dont la philosophie est que vous pouvez toujours acheter une meilleure femelle et d’en éliminer d’autre moins bonnes. . Nous avons également vu certains éleveurs d’autres races ajouter une nouvelle race à leurs opérations ce qui sera très intéressant pour notre race.Nous avons eu plus d’intérêt de la part des éleveurs des États Unis cet automne car le nombre de vaches aux USA à chuté drastiquement et je pense même qu’il y aura beaucoup de demande pour des vaches commerciales pour augmenter leurs troupeaux.

Nous avons vu des différences de prix entre les ventes et même au sein de certaines ventes , ce qui nous fait dire que le marketing et la promotion sont des outils très importants. Ceci

englobe de nombreux aspects , traitant en autre de l’achat et de la vente , non seulement pour améliorer votre troupeau mais pour obtenir plus de visibilié. Il s’agit également d’une publicité évidente à tous les niveaux de l’industrie ,et de la communauté bovine , des 4 H pour soutenir la jeunesse,pour aider les autres producteurs en démarrage et votre association chaque fois que cela est possible . Il s’agit de communiquer avec tous vos anciens clients et de croire en votre produit et de toujours être derrière votre produit c’est à dire un service après vente. Réussir la commercialisation de votre produit comporte plusieurs points qu’il faut respecter pour avoir vraiment de bons résultats. Couper partout et prendre tout ce qui n’est pas cher et facile pour sauver de l’argent,n’est pas ce qui est le plus rentable,moins de client moins d’argent, et ce qui est le pire il n’y a pas de deuxième chance dans bien des cas,donc il ne faut pas lésiner sur les moyens à prendre dans la publicité et promotion vous serez toujours les grands gagnants.

Une des façons les plus faciles de saboter tous vos efforts de marketing est en étant négatif à l’égard d’autres éleveurs de leurs bovins et de leurs programme. Laisser aux autres les points négatifs des autres éleveurs et concentrer vous sur votre propre programme dont vous seul peut changer et améliorer Restez positif et tous vos efforts de marketing seront récompensés .

Comme une saison se termine et une autre commence les ventes de taureaux sont à notre porte . Assurez vous que vous faites tout en votre possible pour maximiser votre chiffre d’affaires potentiel avec le genre de taureau que vous mettrez en marché . Une bonne nutrition est la première chose à respecter pour maximiser vos gains , mais de minimiser les problèmes de santé est un plus. Ensuite, la promotion et le marketing entre en scène . S’assurer que vous

avez les meilleures photos possibles et de les promouvoir par tous les moyens possible. Publicité journeaux, Facebook, Kijii ,plusieurs sont gratuits ils suffit de s’en sevir.

FALL BOARD MEETINGS

CCA Fall Board Meetings were held in Calgary on October 19 & 20, 2013. Highlights include Doug Blair being hired as Genomics Consultant for the CCA. Doug will be assisting Mel with the transition to SNP and the incorporation of genomics. Lois Chivilo will be joining the CCA on a full time basis with a primary focus on Registry.

There have been slight changes to the Membership Fee Schedule; please contact your Provincial Association or the CCA office should you have any questions. The Canadian Charolais Association Annual General Meeting will be held in the Ottawa Valley, Ontario the last weekend of June, 2014.

The sod for the Charolais building was first turned over in 1977.

Last year we did some internal renovations to update the look, feel and function; this fall, we replaced the roof to ensure structural soundness for many years to come.

Judging officials had a demanding task sorting through the Charolais cattle on the show road this fall. We were well represented with strong genetics throughout Canada; congratulations to all breeders and exhibitors who brought their seedstock to town and promoted the excellence our breed has to offer!

La construction du bâtiment Charolais a débuté en 1977. L’an dernier, nous avons fait quelques rénovations internes pour mettre le décor et l’atmosphère à jour. Cet automne, nous avons remplacé le toit pour assurer une solidité structurelle pour les nombreuses années à venir.

Les juges d’exposition ont eu toute une tâche à trier les bovins Charolais qui ont été exposés cet automne. Nous étions bien représentés avec une forte génétique partout au Canada ; Félicitations à tous les éleveurs et exposants qui ont apporté leurs animaux à la ville et qui ont participé a la promotion de l’excellence que notre race a à offrir !

Kidney Disease in Cattle

Early recognition and treatment of kidney disease in cattle can often have a very favourable prognosis. The capacity of the kidneys is great, so often we may not see any specific clinical signs until two thirds of the total kidneys’ capacity are damaged.

There are many causes of toxic damage to the kidneys but this article will focus on the infectious causes of kidney disease resulting in what veterinarians call pyelonephritis (pus and infection in the kidneys). The infection results from common bacteria which gain access to the kidneys from the bloodstream. Kidneys are essentially blood filters. The other area of access is up the urinary tract and urinary retention from partial blockage will encourage growth of bacteria and infection. Kidney infections are generally individual animal problems and cows may have the history of a prior infection from a retained placenta, mastitis, pneumonia etc. These infections suppress the immune function and allow the seed of bacteria to gain access to the kidneys.

In cattle one of the very first clinical signs is weight loss. I see more of these cases in late pregnancy or right after calving. The pregnant cow must essentially filter both hers and the fetus’s blood. This taxes the filtering ability of kidneys, which is why this is the most common time to acquire kidney infection. Cows carrying twins have this problem compounded. Any time there is extreme weight loss for no apparent reason, have the animal checked by your veterinarian. They can palpate the left kidney and the ureters (tubes going from the kidneys to the bladder). A urine sample can be obtained and checked for blood,

bacteria, pus cells and other parameters necessary to rule in or out kidney infection. Blood samples can be taken and the white blood cell count may be up. Other parameters such as blood urea nitrogen (BUN) only go up once the kidneys have been severely damaged and by then the prognosis is very poor. My experience has been if cattle are still eating and drinking well and kidney disease has been diagnosed prognosis with treatment is very favourable. If appetite has been suppressed the BUN is too high and often in spite of vigorous treatment like intravenous fluids prognosis is very poor.

There are many more cases of kidney infection out there than we realize. This has been made evident to me by the large number I have seen when autopsying cows under the BSE testing program. Both kidneys will be severely infected and have very little normal function left. The common history is the farmer noticed weight loss but no other symptom and then the cow quit eating and died shortly thereafter. Most of these cows can be saved and go on to lead productive lives if caught early enough. I am sure a number of these cows died on producers’ farms with no diagnosis prior to the BSE testing.

Producers may notice increased frequency of urination or pain at urination. Look closely at the urine, especially at the end of the urination process for signs of pus or blood (red coloured). This will provide a clue kidney infection may be advancing. In cattle there are also many causes of red urine from bacillary hemoglobinuria (redwater), phosphorus deficiency to a red dye excreted when on clover. All these and many other causes of red urine can sometimes make the specific diagnosis more difficult.

The most common bacteria causing kidney infection in cattle is very responsive to penicillin. There are two keys in treatment. First the earlier the better before more permanent kidney damage is done. Secondly the length of treatment must be adequate to completely clear the infection to avoid a relapse. Treatment periods for at least 14 days, in my experience, most often will avoid the relapses. This most definitely will entail treating daily with procaine penicillin for the first few days until there is noticeable improvement. Then several long acting shots the required days apart will stretch treatment out to the two weeks. A common mistake is stopping treatment too early when attitude improves and the urine clears. This is a smouldering infection and will come back if not completely cleared. As with any relapse, the second time treatment is much more difficult as the infection becomes deep seeded. If the cattle remain thin long after treatment there has probably been permanent damage to the kidneys. These cattle are like time bombs and with impaired kidney function are unlikely to reproduce and could eventually succumb to kidney failure. They might be best being culled before the condition worsens.

Kidney infections are sporadic occurrences across the prairies. Every herd experiences them from time to time, but with careful observation, early intervention and correct treatment the results are often gratifying. Penicillin is still a very effective drug as it is concentrated and excreted through the kidneys and subsequently the urine. Let’s try and treat more of these conditions as they are – even with labour included – a cheap fix.

The Charolais barn was full of enthusiastic breeders, friends and some excellent cattle!I would like to congratulate all of this year’s exhibitors for bringing cattle that definitely showcased what our breed is all about. It was a great time to catch up with the youth and breeders active in our industry and meet some new friends as well!

CBBC Appoints New Executive Director

The Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) has appointed Michael Latimer as their new Executive Director. Michael brings an extensive range of experience in the beef cattle industry including roles in brand marketing and management. He has recently held the position of General Manager, Canadian Angus Association and along with other industry representatives participated in a number of breed promotional activities including strategic planning sessions for the Canadian Beef Breeds Council.

Michael is a 5th generation purebred cattle producer. After graduation from the University of Alberta he worked as a partner with Remitall Cattle Company. He served as President of the Olds Agricultural Society and has also served as a judge and a mentor in the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Program.

“We are delighted with addition to the Executive Director role of CBBC and look forward to working with Michael”, says President David Bolduc. “Our focus for Canada’s purebred beef cattle producers continues with ongoing projects such as international market development

through the Canadian Cattlemen Market Development Council and the Legacy Program, BIXS value chain system and with the view to promoting the purebred sector both domestically as well as internationally.”

Doug Blair Teams Up With CCA

Doug Blair, founder of Western Breeders, has joined the Canadian Charolais Association serving as a consultant for Genomics.

Doug Blair was born in British Columbia, Canada and was raised at Langview Holstein Farm, Langley, BC. He is a graduate in Agriculture from the University of British Columbia. In 1968, Doug founded Western Breeders Service, a forerunner company of Alta Genetics Inc. He was CEO of Western Breeders until 1988 when a merger resulted in the formation of Alta Genetics Inc. and he continued as CEO until January 1, 2002 at which time he retired.

Breeders and Canadian Embryo Exporters Association, and is a Past President of the Canadian Livestock Exporters Association. He also served as Co Chairman of the Canadian Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade for 4 years, an advisory group to the Canadian Ministers of Agriculture and Trade.

Doug served as Chairman of the Board of Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) and the National Association of Animal Breeders in the U.S. Doug has been awarded the Pinnacle Award for outstanding business success, the Canadian Export Achievement Award, the Commemorative Medal for Contributions to Canada and was inducted into the Canadian

Agriculture Hall of Fame in November 2003.

In 2007, Doug was made an Honorary Member of the Klussendorf Association at World Dairy Expo in the U.S. and in 2008 Doug was a first co recipient of the Dairy Cattle Improvement Industry of Distinction Award by CDN.

Doug offers a vast knowledge of genomics experience from the Dairy Industry that is readily applied to the Beef sector. His most recent successes with Rocky Mountain Holsteins and his personal passion for genetic improvement bring a practical outlook to the future of Genomics for our breed.

Il était PDG Western Breeders Service jusquʹen 1988, lorsqu`une fusion entraîne la formation de Alta Genetics Inc. et il a continué en tant que PDG jusquʹau 1er janvier 2002, date à laquelle il prend sa retraite.

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Alan Sparrow on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at Oliver Lodge. Alan led a busy and interesting life, sometimes slowed down by illnesses. However, he had great courage and faced his challenges head on; the last being his stroke in 2003. Alan is survived by his wife Nancy (Weedon) of 57 years, and his four sons and their families; Norm and Brenda (Jerilyn [Mike Gabruch, Peyton and Beau], Jamie and Greg), Morley and Patti (Brandon, Travis and Kirstin), Vern and Joan (Siera, Devin

and Mitchell), and Cameron and Kerrie (Emma, Jill and Josie); sisters in law Amy Stubbs, Lois Sparrow, Barbara Sparrow and Bea Sparrow. Alan was predeceased by his parents Abiah and Olive Sparrow and his five brothers, Ronald, Robert, Douglas, Merle and Herbert.

Alan was born in Saskatoon in 1927 and moved with his family to the farm at Vanscoy in 1928. His school years were spent at Minnesota Rural School, Vanscoy and Bedford Road Collegiate. After high school, Alan worked for clothing stores in Rosetown, helped his brother Ron with water delivery and farmed

part time with his brother Merle. For five winters, Alan worked as an icemaker at the Hub City Curling Club. He was also employed by Crane Plumbing and Heating. However, Alan’s heart was always in farming and he moved back to Vanscoy to farm in 1959. Alan worked hard to build his home, farm and cattle business. He was one of the first importers of Charolais cattle into Canada and was a pioneer in zero tilling of the land. His family was very important to him and Alan spent many hours driving to hockey, leading 4 H and supporting church and community.

2013 Saskatchewan Charolais Association Honor Scroll Recipients

There were two SCA Honour Scrolls presented during the show at Canadian Western Agribition. The first was to Brian and Betty McTavish, Moosomin. Brian and Betty have been active Charolais breeders for over 25 years and Brian sat on the SCA Board for a couple of terms.

The other recipients were Sylvan and Karen Martens of Glenbush. They have been building their herd for over 30 years in North West Saskatchewan. Sylvan sat on the SCA Board as well as the CCA Board and took a turn as Breed Improvement Chairman.

Charolais Booster of the Year

Grant Barnett, manager of Heartland Livestock, Moose Jaw, was presented with the Charolais Booster Award by SCA President Donna Ross during the Agribition Show. Grant is a big supporter of Charcross calves and organizes a very successful special presort, Charolais Extravaganza, for them every fall.

All multi-cellular organisms contain hormones

There are a lot of concerns and mixed messages about hormones in beef. There are a few things to keep in mind the next time you hear that beef contains too many hormones.

All multi cellular organisms contain hormones. That’s true for animals and vegetables, but some meat production systems use hormone implants which cause the meat to have slightly more hormones than the non implanted. True in beef, but not in pork or chicken as federal law does not permit the use of hormones in raising hogs or chickens. Implants are used to increase efficiency (i.e. feed conversion to muscle more quickly) or more muscle from less feed more quickly, which keeps prices down and reduces the environmental impact of production.

In beef, the implanted animals will produce meat that contains slightly more of the hormone estrogen (1.9 versus 1.3 nanograms per 3 ounce serving which is about the size of a deck of cards). Is that extra estrogen going to cause problems? Consider the facts. When hormones are eaten,

they are digested, broken down and largely neutralized, so they don’t act as hormones anymore. Even if they did, the 1.9 nanograms of estrogen in implanted beef seems miniscule when we consider that a child’s body produces around 50,000 nanograms of estrogen per day. An adult female (non pregnant) will produce 480,000 nanograms of estrogen per day on its own.

The 1.9 nanograms of estrogen in implanted beef is also miniscule compared to 225 nanograms of estrogen in potatoes, 340 nanograms of estrogen in peas, 520 nanograms of estrogen in ice cream, 2,000 nanograms of estrogen in cabbage, 11,250 nanograms of estrogen in soy milk, and 170,000 nanograms of estrogen in soybean oil… all based on a 3 ounce serving size. One birth control pill contains 35,000 nanograms of estrogen. It may be surprising to learn that there are more hormones in commonly eaten food products than there are in beef (http://go.unl.edu/uhg4 or http://msucares.com/pubs/publication s/p2767.pdf)!

So why do kids seem to be growing faster and reaching puberty earlier? Genetics play a role, but hormones make far less sense than calories consumed and increased levels of body fat (i.e., childhood obesity). According to Dr. Frank Biro of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, “BMI (body mass index) is, we found, the biggest single factor for the onset of puberty.” It is easy to blame hormones and sometimes just meat for that matter, or food in general for health problems because the general public is removed from actual food production and processing. It is human nature to be fearful of things we aren’t familiar with or that we don’t fully understand. It is always advisable to do some research and make inquiries yourself before believing everything you hear or read. If misinformation and half truths are repeated often enough, and in sinister enough media campaign voices, they can take on a life of their own devoid of science or truth.

Dear Michael,

By this letter I would like to provide some clarity regarding WCABP’s decision to amend the minimum scrotal circumference (SC) standards, which are a critical component of the bull breeding soundness examination (BSE).

The minimum SC standards were last updated in 2000 and were based on data generated in 1972, 1992 and 1998. If we continue to rely on the old standards, then in some cases the data are 40 years old. To address this issue, Dr. Albert Barth, a board certified Theriogenologist at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), along with Drs. Steve Hendrick and Alvaro Guerra, initiated a study to look at testicular size. Specifically, between 2006 and 2011, bulldata were obtained from 41 veterinary practices in western Canadaalong with bull test stations in Quebec. This provided a database of10,968 bulls, ranging in ages from 1 to 11 years, with most being 1 and 2 year olds. Next, these data were compared to the average scrotal circumference data obtained between 1972–1998, see Table 1.Table 1 shows how SC have increased for all breeds overtime. For example, the previous average SC for Herefords was 31.0 cm,and under the old scoring system a 12 month old bull had to be at least 30 cm to pass. Herefords now average 33.9 cm with the lowest 10% being under 30.8 cm. A similar set of tables was generated for each age class of bulls. Fewer than 10 animals were present in each age group for 10 breeds: Belgian Blue, Brown Swiss, Dexter, Fleckvieh, Maine Anjou, Piedmontese, Red Poll, Shaver, Tarentaise, andTexas Longhorn.

Tables 2 and 3 show the OLD and NEW suggested minimum scrotal circumferences.In general, the new recommendations are based on culling the bottom 10% of bulls. Significantly, the new system is also more progressive because it has added a separate age class for 15 month old bulls. The rationale is that testicular growth is very rapid from about 7 to 15 months of age and then rapidly levels off so that ~90% of final testis size is reached by 2 years. The 15 month category creates a fairer system because it no longer lumps 15 month old bulls with the 16 20 month bulls. As for the other changes, the Simmental, Gelbvieh, Pinzgauer and Brown Swiss had a 1.0 cm reduction for the 21 30 month category (36 to 35cm); all other age classes remain unchanged. Charolais and Angus now belong with the bulls in the first column and therefore they all moved up 1.0 cm at each age class, except at 21 30 months. Similarly, Herefords and Shorthorns moved from column 3 to column 2 and hence all moved up 1.0 cm at each age class. All the remaining bull breeds remain largely unchanged except the Limousin, Blonde and Galloway bulls which had a 1.0 cm increase at 21 30 months.

The question that arises from this whole exercise is “why increase the minimum standards”?The reason being is that research shows that SC is highly correlated to daily sperm production and semen quality.Furthermore, estimates of heritability of SC at a year of age range from 0.44 to 0.69, which means selection pressureshould increase the average SC across the industry. More importantly,testicular size is correlated with puberty in female offspring. This correlation was first reported in 1996 wherein bulls with higher EPDsfor SC produced daughters that reached puberty at significantly earlier ages. ABeef Research Progress Report noted an extremely high correlation ( 0.98) between mean yearling scrotal circumference and average age at puberty in heifers (the relationship is negative because larger SC is correlated with a younger age that the heifer reaches puberty). Scrotal circumference is also correlated to age at first breeding ( 0.77), age at first calving ( 0.66) and pregnancy rate (0.66).In short, age at puberty and SC are thought to be the same trait.

The WCABP believes that the newlyrecommended standards are founded on science and that continuing to place moderate selection pressure on SC should improve the reproductive potential for all breeds. Some have voiced concerns that there will be no end in sight to veterinarians wanting to increase SC. This, however, is not the case, in fact some breeds had the minimum SC standard decrease in SC by 1.0 cm because there were concerns relating to selecting for too large of testes.

Michael, I think that it is fair to say that the science behind the changes is sound; however, the communication on our part to industry has been poor. On behalf of the WCABP, I apologize to the CBBC and all the breed associations and look forward to better communications in the future. Feedback from the associations would be appreciated as soon as possible because as you know the new bull evaluation forms are already in use.
