Welcome
to the 4th annual bull sale
There are a couple of changes this year. Firstly, we moved the sale back to March 12, this gives some of the customers a chance to see how the previous bulls have calved and performed. Secondly, we have Cutbank Cattle Co. consigning some Red and Black Angus two-year olds as well. We are excited to see how these additions will workout. The program is still the same, we develop the bulls slowly to achieve optimal longevity. We feel this pen of bulls gives you lots of options, performance calving ease, muscle, hair and good feet and legs to get the cows bred.
As always, everyone is welcome to the ranch to see the bull pen. We like showing them off and coffee is always on. We hope to see you sale day. Come early for lunch and to inspect the bulls. If Casey, Clint or Don can be of any assistance, please call, as we would be happy to help out. Most importantly, we would like to thank all previous buyers for the support and trust in our program. Without you guys, it would not be possible, to raise these bulls, that we so enjoy.

Welcome to the Wilkie’s Annual Bull Sale. This year they have invited Cutbank Cattle Co. to the sale, and they are consigning two-year old Red & Black Angus bulls. Both these operations don’t push the bulls, but grow them out so they will not melt, go out get to work and last. The Wilkies have been producing the thick Full French bulls that have worked so well in their commercial operation and for other cattlemen. The calves from these bulls are thick topped, with lots of rib and good haired. In auction markets all across the country, we saw a premium paid for the identifiable Charolais calves last fall. If you haven’t been using a Charolais bull in a crossbreeding program, you need to help yourself with added pounds at weaning, a premium price and dollars in your pocket. If you want to add the British influence to your cowherd or get the added calving ease, the Angus bulls offered here will get the job done. They have been producing a sound product that has been working selling privately off the yard. We welcome all their past customers to come to see them sale day.
This is a quality offering with many related bulls that will give you more consistency in your calf crop if you need multiple bulls. There are also some definite breeder bulls for those wanting to add a top bull to your breeding program. You are welcome to view the bulls anytime at the ranches and if you can’t make the sale be sure to give the consignors or us a call and let us help find a bull that is right for your program. Bull Wintering: All Bulls returning to Wilkie Charolais farm must have insurance. Bulls will be delivered prior to March 31, 2020. Bulls staying from April 1, 2020 on will be charged $6/day for every additional day.
Payment for purchases can be made through Visa or Mastercard. A 3% surcharge will be applied to all credit card purchases.
Absentee Buying: We certainly hope you can join us sale day to see the bulls, but if you can’t, please feel free to give us or one of the staff a call and we’d will help find the bull to fit your needs.
Bull Inspection: All bulls will be semen tested

Birth Weight & Calving Ease University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65% 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb.
Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf with weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease.
Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

Welcome, I would like to thank the Wilkies for including us in their sale. You could say I am not of the mainstream, as I put emphasis of functional and economic traits rather than EPDs and the show ring. I think practical out of necessity. My cattle are not the highest growth cattle out there, but my cattle will put on as many pounds under a very low input environment as any. My cowherd is treated tougher than nearly all people’s cowherds that purchase my bulls. I limit feed resources to pressure the cowherd, this way I can find out which ones can handle it and which ones can’t. Most bull programs are high input operations with big inefficient cows that need pampering to stay in production. I prefer 3 – 1200 lb cows, raising 600 lb calves each for 1800 lb of calf, than two 1800 lb cows that rarely produce a calf 50% of their body weight, but eat as much as three 1200 lb cows, and almost never last into their teens. 1500 lb cows are fine if they can
produce 750 lb calves every year. Longevity in a cow herd is a must. The most efficient cows are the oldest, that have done everything right for at least 10 years, this proves out all of the important maternal traits. Almost everything is a result of genetics, when a producer talks mostly about performance and EPDs, they probably have disregarded most functional traits. When cattle are bred for extremes they will not last very long. This group of bulls ran out on pasture until the end of October with no creep feed. Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made. Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder.
