More than 10,000 shrubs and small trees were planted last fall (below) on the living wall in South Surrey.

Library goes green with living wall Unique project provides energy savings as well as visual appeal While there are no shortages of parks around the Semiahmoo Peninsula to enjoy the greenery of trees, flowers and plants, there is one place where one might not expect to find such foliage growing – on the wall of a South Surrey building. The ‘living wall’ began to take root last fall on the south exterior wall of 1815 152 St., home to the South Surrey RCMP and Semiahmoo Library. More than 10,000 plants – including shrubs and small trees – were installed, a City of Surrey project estimated at costing $272,000 and described as “the largest and most diverse project of its kind in North America.” The process began in late summer of 2010, when Green over Grey – the company hired to do the work

File photo

– started working on designs for the 3,000 square-foot wall, including colours, shapes and flowering schedules. The planting was completed within a few months, and before long, the first of the flowers began to bloom. In addition to its unique visual appeal, the wall also provides improved air quality and energy savings. According to Green over

Grey, the additional insulation created by the two-inch layer of air between the plant and the concrete can decrease heating and cooling costs by up to 20 per cent. The garden mimics the way plants grow along cliffsides and bluffs, and requires no soil; using a hydroponic system, the plants are added to a recycled-fabric layer through which nutrient-enriched water is circulated. The plant layer also protects the concrete from the elements, much like a rainscreen would. Despite being the first of its kind on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, the living wall project isn’t a new concept – the oldest such wall was planted in Paris about 30 years ago, and covers approximately 10,000 sq. ft. Living walls can also be found around Europe and Asia.

The centre is the product of a unique partnership between the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation, Fraser Health, The City of White Rock, Peace Arch Curling Centre, White Rock South Surrey Community Foundation, the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, who, along with the generous support of Peninsula community members, banded together to create what is described as a “fabulous resource for the community.” Comprised of a brand new curling rink and two state-of-the-art fitness studios, there will be plenty of opportunity for Peninsula residents to get their daily doses of exercise at the Centre for Active Living, where a variety of fitness programs are offered by White Rock Leisure Services.

The Centre for Active Living opened in White Rock earlier this year, and is home to health facilities, including Peace Arch Curling Centre (below). For patients dealing with chronic disease or recovering from cardiac disease, the centre is home to Fraser Health’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which offers education and fitness programs. Later this year, a Primary Care Access Clinic will also be moving into the Centre for Active Living, which will connect patients with family doctors in the community

and provide enhanced care for highneed patients or those suffering from chronic disease. The White Rock South Surrey Stroke Recovery Club and the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. White Rock Resource Centre are also looking forward to setting up their new digs in the centre. Besides providing a plethora of health benefits to the White Rock / South Surrey community, the Centre for Active Living is also attracting the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO), who is keeping a close eye on the centre’s common-sense, multi-faceted approach to health living. Though there are many aspects to the idea behind the centre, the overall concept is a relatively simple one: exercise, diet and lifestyle are the three most important factors to a person’s overall health. Access to such a cutting-edge and forward-thinking facility right here on the Semiahmoo Peninsula is hoped to encourage long, health lives for all the residents in this community.

Never a dull day for sports fans Top-notch athletics keep the adrenaline pumping year round

A

s is the case every year on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, there’s plenty of action to keep the average sports fan busy no matter the season, from cycling to softball to hockey and more. One of the biggest events of the season takes place at Softball City (2201 148 St.) and Cloverdale Athletic Park (6330 168 St.) when the world’s top girls’ and women’s softball teams compete in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, a foursome of tournaments all under a single banner. The weeklong event, slated for July 9-17, is now in its second year after formerly being run under its old name, the Canada Cup. For more on the event, see page 24. The other high-profile summer event is, of course, the Tour de White Rock, which brings the world’s top professional and amateur cyclists to White Rock streets for one weekend every July. This year, the three-day event, which is in its 32nd year, is scheduled for July 15-17. The Tour de White Rock, part of B.C. Superweek, begins Friday, July 15 with the Homelife Hill Climb.

File photos

The Tour de White Rock returns for its 32nd year in July, while (below) the White Rock Tritons' 2011 season is already well underway. The hill climb is one of the most popular and spectator-friendly events of the summer, as hundreds usually line the sidewalks of Buena Vista Avenue to watch cyclists – two at a time – pedal up Buena Vista, from Oxford Street to just beyond Martin Street. The women begin racing at 7 p.m., while the men start at 7:30 p.m. New this year is an amateur hill climb, slated for 5:30 p.m., in which local cyclists can sign up to test their luck on the same grueling course as the pros. The following day features the Choices Market Criterium, where racers zip around a one-kilometre circuit that includes Johnston Road, Five Corners, White Rock City Hall and White Rock Elementary. The first race, featuring men’s category 3 and 4 riders, hits the pavement at 4 p.m., followed by the pro women at 5 p.m. and the men’s pro category race at 6 p.m. The criterium races are some of the most exciting of the weekend, as cyclists ride in tight proximity to one another, reaching speeds up to

70 km/h. Aside from Saturday’s race, the Five Corners Block Party is also on the schedule, beginning at 10 a.m. and going until 3 p.m. The five-hour party includes live entertainment, street vendors, face-painting and other family events. The main event of the Tour comes Sunday morning when hundreds of riders convene along Marine Drive for the Peace Arch News Road Race, which will see competitors pedal throughout White Rock, on either an 80-km (women’s race) or 130-km (men’s) circuit. The race is one of the most grueling in the country, with plenty of long steep climbs and tight turns, but also one of the most scenic, as cyclists – nearly all of whom rave about the course – ride with the Semiahmoo Bay as a backdrop. The action gets going at 9 a.m. For more, visit www.tourdewhiterock.ca July’s marquee events aside, there’s still plenty of action to keep sports fans busy throughout the spring and summer, especially on the ball see page 21

Baseball scene thriving from page 20 diamonds. The White Rock Tritons – both the U18 and U16 Junior Tritons – can be found on the fields at South Surrey Athletic Park throughout most weekends, and even when they aren’t on their home turf, they often aren’t far away, as the rival North Delta Blue Jays and Fraser Valley Chiefs (who play out of Whalley) are just a line drive up the road. The Little League baseball scene is as popular as ever on the Peninsula, and White Rock-South Surrey Baseball Association players – there’s more than 1,000 of them – can routinely be found on any number of local diamonds, honing their skills and enjoying themselves. On the softball front, the White Rock Renegades are as competitive as ever, and offer fans an opportunity to watch future college and even future national team players in action; each year, a slew of ‘Gades earn athletic scholarships to high-

profile teams both in Canada and the U.S., and a handful have even represented Canada on the world stage. The Renegades, who play out of Softball City in South Surrey, are one of the country’s top programs; last year Renegade teams won four provincial titles and two national crowns, and players and coaches both scooped a number of year-end individual awards. The one loss on the White Rock/ South Surrey sports scene will be felt on the gridiron, where the South Surrey Big Kahuna Rams packed up and moved east to Langley for the 2011 B.C. Junior Football season. The Rams had played out of South Surrey Athletic Park since 2006 – moving from Bear Creek Park in North Surrey – and had played in Surrey since the 1940s, in one league or another. The football void is filled, however, by both the White Rock-South see page 22

The Surrey Eagles look to build upon a successful 2010-11 season .

from page 21 Surrey Titans minor football program – which plays Sundays throughout the late summer and fall – and the Earl Marriott Mariners, the only high school program on the Peninsula, which plays in the fall. And if football isn’t your thing, perhaps you’re waiting for the local hockey season to pick back up in the fall. The Surrey Eagles will look to build on a very successful first year under its new ownership group and new coaching staff when the B.C. Hockey League season kicks off in September. Last season, the Eagles – coached by rookie bench boss Matt Erhart – finished in second place in the Coastal Conference with a record of 35-22-1-2, by far the team’s best showing since its 2005 BCHL championship season. And though the team inevitably loses a few players each season, as the 20-year-olds graduate from the league, the Birds will likely be a contender again in 2011/12. South Surrey and Cloverdale will host the world's top women's softball teams this summer at the Canadian Open.

World's best coming to Peninsula Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships set for July 9-17

T

his summer, local softball fans will again have the opportunity to see some of the best talent from across the globe, when the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships are staged in South Surrey and Cloverdale. Five of the world’s top women’s national softball teams are set to compete at the annual event – known in its former existence as the Canada Cup – as national squads from the United States – the reigning world champions – Venezuela, Japan, Australia and, of course, Canada, will all be on the schedule. The international Invitational is one of a quartet of tournaments at the Canadian Open, which is set to run July 9-17 at Softball City and Cloverdale Athletic Park. In addition, a club-team category – with university-aged teams – will join the fray, along with the Futures division (under-18) and Showcase (under-16). In total, between 80 and 100 teams – more than 1,300 players – are expected to hit the

field for the event, which is the largest tournament in the country. “This community has a great legacy of promoting and supporting women’s fastpitch events, and to be the home of one of the three largest tournaments in the world, drawing the top teams and athletes to this event, is extremely exciting,” Canadian Open chairman Greg Timm

told Black Press earlier this year. This will be the second year for the Canadian Open, which replaced the Canada Cup last year when most international squads – save for Canada and the United States, which played an exhibition series – had to bow out of the popular event due to a scheduling conflict with world championships. In addition to the national teams competing in the International Invitational, the Futures tournament will also have some worldly flavour as well, as squads from Peru, Great Britain, Brazil and Colombia and Canada. Local clubs in the Futures division include the Delta Heat, both the Surrey Storm ‘92 and ‘93 teams, and two White Rock Renegade sides, the ‘92s and ‘94s. The U16 Showcase tourney will feature the Heat ‘95 and ‘96, the South Surrey-White Rock Thunder and the Renegades ‘95 and ‘96. The weeklong event, hosted by the White Rock Renegades association, will be played at Softball City and Cloverdale Athletic Park.

Mary’s Garden

It’s been 45 years since Jack and Mary Nootebos started a small vegetable stand on their South Surrey farm, selling produce fresh from their fields. Fast forward to 2011 and Mary’s Garden, located at 15649 40 Ave., is one of the Peninsula’s best-known spots to find a huge variety of fruit and vegetables – including their famous sweet carrots and corn. The emphasis at this family-owned farm is fresh, as all of their veggies are picked daily. Other mouthwatering items to be found include fresh-cut flowers, an assortment of locally made jams, syrups and honeys and free-range eggs.

Surrey Farms Another family-owned produce destination in South Surrey, owned by the Rai family who began farming in 1989 with around 10 acres of land. More than 20 years later, and

Surrey Farms now stretches more than 200 acres, at 152 Street and Colebrook Road. Well-known on the Peninsula for fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, red and black currants and gooseberries, shoppers can also find a variety of other fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh-baked pies and homemade jams. For those who like to get up-closeand-personal with their produce, Surrey Farms also offers U-pick throughout the season in their clean, supervised fields.

Missing Goat Blueberry Farm Located at 32 Avenue and 172 Street in South Surrey, this familyrun blueberry farm is in its third year of transitioning to organic certification. The farm grows two varieties of blueberries – Bluecrop and Augustine – and is also home to The Shabby Shack, a store that sells the tasty berries as well as old-fashioned jam, chutney and pies.

Hazelmere Organic Farm Peninsula produce-lovers can find a wide variety of goodies at this South Surrey farm, which grows produce that is certified organic. The farm – located at 184 Street and 18 Avenue – is also home to a store that is open year-round, and the farm's produce can also be found at Capers Community Market and Bishops, to name just a few.

Cloverdale Country Farms Famous for homegrown nugget potatoes, this farm market, at 168 Street and 58 Avenue, is also known for its fresh mushrooms, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, as well as a number of other veggies, including carrots, squash, sweet corn and pumpkins. Bring the kids along on the weekend to enjoy the bouncy castle while you browse the produce or the on-site garden centre, which sells locally grown bedding plants, perennials and nursery stock.

Museum set to reopen this summer Historic White Rock facility to return to original train-station design

O

ne of Marine Drive’s most distinguished fixtures is receiving a facelift, and those visiting White Rock beach this summer will be able to take a step back in time once it is complete. White Rock Museum and Archives’ $1.4-million revitalization project – which is expected to be finished by July – is restoring the historical building to its original train-station design. “The idea was to put it back to its original architecture,” museum executive director Sharon Oldaker said, noting visitors will see a number of improvements. “They’re going to see bright, fresh gallery space, they’re going to see a completely new museum store, and of course the big draw is the breezeway from Marine Drive to the beach has been put back in place, and that’s the original architecture from when the museum was built in 1913.” The museum hopes to attract artists from all over the area by featuring Pacific Northwest artwork of every medium in the building’s store, Oldaker added. “The museum shop is going to primarily feature work from local artists and that’s kind of a new direction for the shop a little bit. We want to be the go-to place if you’re looking for something that really exemplifies local artwork.” In fact, the goal is for the museum to be a go-to place for all manner of interests and attractions. “The whole idea is that we want the museum to be a focal point of activity on the promenade.” That activity will begin with a soft opening July 1, which will be the public’s first opportunity to see the renovated facility. “The building itself will be the exhibit,” Oldaker said. “We’ll have information at the time on volunteering programs, the train plaque program, heritage stone program, and on different ways to get involved in the museum. Absolutely, people would be invited to come in, and if they want a sneak

Beach upgrades ready in time for sun Visiting White Rock beach is being made all the more enjoyable thanks to improvements along Marine Drive. The city has focused on a number of waterfront upgrades over the past year, including renovations to washroom facilities and plans for enhanced lighting along the pier, according to Mayor Catherine Ferguson. “The waterfront is our biggest asset in White Rock and it is, for some, a regional destination to come and visit our beach, and it was long overdue to do some renovations to some of our facilities,” she said. Renovations to Balsam Street washrooms were expected to be finished mid-May, while those at the foot of Oxford Street were scheduled for completion May long weekend. “Those will be great new additions to the waterfront,” Ferguson said. “From bottom to top, it’s going to be new fixtures and flooring and walls – everything is new.” On the roof of the Oxford Street

Marine Drive washrooms were torn down last year, new facilities will be ready in time for the summer. facility will be a platform where people can take in the ocean view, she noted. “There will be a set of stairs to go to the top of the building and look out over the water.” While the renovated museum and the reinstitution of its breezeway to the waterfront are expected to be big draws for visitors and residents alike, Ferguson said another exciting addition to the beach will be improved lighting on the pier – an

upgrade scheduled to go before council in May. “We’re looking at continuing some of the arch work that was started with the ‘Welcome to White Rock’ arch with lighting along the pier,” she said, noting the current lighting is on plain metal bars. “This would be more substantial arches for lighting to sit on.” Ferguson stressed the importance of not only maintaining Marine Drive’s features, but continuing to find ways to enhance them, as is being done with the washrooms, museum and pier. “All these things will improve the experience for people on the waterfront to be able to use new facilities and see our museum restored back to its original concept and be able to see the ocean from Marine Drive through the breezeway and continuing to improve and invest in White Rock is really important. I believe we have to recognize the value of what we have here in White Rock.”

Plenty of ways to stay entertained From theatre companies to galleries, Peninsula's arts scene thriving

T

he Semiahmoo Peninsula, long celebrated as an arts community, is seeing a renewed commitment to the arts, particularly in White Rock, where it is viewed, potentially, as one of the city’s strongest economic drivers. Under the Creative Communities program, 2010 Legacies Now and the provincial government have provided a $10,000 grant to the city to document its arts and cultural resources. The city is currently working with BC Healthy Communities and Semiahmoo Arts on a Cultural Mapping project in which a comprehensive inventory of public and private sector culture assets, services and facilities is seen as a way to maximize the potential of the area and bring all the arts organizations closer together. Here's a sampling of some of the talented groups that help keep the Peninsula's arts scene blossoming:

Semiahmoo Arts The Community Arts Council of White Rock & District, recently restyled under the more inclusive Semiahmoo Arts banner, was established in January 1974 to stimulate an awareness of the arts in relation to the district and its growth. An umbrella organization serving the community in the arenas of visual and performing arts as well as art education, Semiahmoo Arts strives to raise the standards of cultural achievements in the area by broadening the horizons and the scope of the community through the interchange of art forms and ideas. New shows featuring local artists are presented each month at the arts council gallery and gift shop. Semiahmoo Arts also presents regular intimate music concerts by established and emerging Canadian performers, the Uptown Lounge music series at the White Rock Community Centre, the Readings by the Salish Sea series and the Zero to 360 open mic for authors at Pelican Rouge Coffee House. www.semiahmooarts.com.

Last Christmas, White Rock Players Club presented Robinson Crusoe, one of several pantomimes presented by Peninsula theatre groups each year.

White Rock Players Club/ Coast Capital Playhouse The White Rock Players Club, which has a long and distinguished history dating back to the early 1940s – including a 1958 clubs production of Playboy of the Western World which swept the top awards at the Dominion Drama Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia – is the owner and resident company of White Rock’s community theatre, now known as the Coast Capital Playhouse. In addition to its long-celebrated annual Christmas pantomime, the club continues to present productions aiming at the highest standards for community theatre. The club’s recent show The Ladies of the Camellias, by Lillian GarrettGroag, won top honours in the Theatre B.C. Greater Vancouver Zone festival in April. The club’s next regular production in the current season, The Cat’s Meow by Steven Peros, directed by Shermann, will run June 8-25. The Coast Capital Playhouse is also venue for the White Rock

Dr. Z Strauts M.D.B.Sc Why Suffer in Vein? At the Vein and Laser Clinic in Windsor Square, Dr Z. Strauts, a phlebologist or more simply, a vein doctor, with 18 years experience, offers the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for the treatment of unsightly and symptomatic veins. Venous problems are common, affecting one in three women and one in seven men. The tendency to have veins is inherited but people with jobs that involve prolonged standing with little walking or jobs which involve a lot of squatting such as with floor laying and even gardening, are more prone to developing symptomatic veins. Pregnancy, due to increased pelvic pressure often results in dilated veins. After delivery, these veins may normalize but as women age, vessel walls may weaken enough to cause venous incompetence. The underlying pathology is damage to valves which are located within veins and help support venous blood flow back to the heart. When valves are damaged, pressure builds up stretching veins not only in thickness but also in length. That causes bulging and the twisted appearance seen in more severe cases on the surface. Increasing pressure may cause the dark pigment from blood to be deposited in the skin particularly in the lower legs and ankles where pressure is the greatest. Spider veins may be an early sign of increasing underlying pressure and should be thoroughly examined especially when symptoms are present. In extreme cases, fat atrophy, thinning of skin and ulceration may occur. Trapping of blood in surface vessels may cause inflammation or phlebitis. When it occurs in deeper veins, blood clotting or thrombosis may occur. This condition is known to plague travellers or truck drivers where prolonged sitting and dehydration are

contributing factors. Veins may therefore be simple spider veins that are purely a cosmetic problem or more complicated larger truncal or branch veins that signal more serious underlying venous disease. Symptoms may include “restless legs”, heaviness, aching particularly at the end of the day and with prolonged standing, “tiredness”, and muscle cramping. Some veins are symptomatic but not visible at the surface. Testing equipment such as Duplex and color flow ultrasound are essential tools that help a phlebologist sort out the often complex anatomy and pathology. Treatment of veins that are damaged yet are below the skin surface can be aided by Duplex ultrasound. The target vessel is clearly seen as it is treated by injection or fiber optic laser treatment. The process of patient evaluation therefore starts with taking a thorough history followed by visual inspection, Doppler examination and where necessary, mapping with duplex color flow ultrasound. Treatment is then planned according to the individual patient’s needs. This may include the following: COMPRESSION SCLEROTHERAPY - For small veins such as spider veins, a sclerosing agent is injected into the veins through a very fine needle. Multiple injections may be needed. A pressure wrap or stocking is applied and maintained for one to three days. For larger veins, the solution is stronger and when veins are below the surface, the injection is guided by ultrasound, DUPLEX GUIDED SCLEROTHERAPY. The more recent process of “foaming” the solution has improved efficacy. SURFACE LASER TREATMENT - Various lasers can be used to treat small spider veins as long as pressures are low or where they are not being fed by larger deeper veins. AMBULATORY MICROPHLEBECTOMY - This treatment uses fine hooks that

draw the vein out through a small 1-2mm puncture in the skin. This is done under surface anaesthesia and leaves no scars. Often these same veins may be injected rather than removed. LIGATION - Tying the vein off with a suture, a surgical procedure. The recurrence rate of about 30 % is the same as injection. STRIPPING - This is a surgical procedure performed in hospital on large incompetent veins that would not be treatable by more conservative non-surgical treatments. COMPRESSION STOCKINGS - This approach helps relieve discomfort but does not cure the problem. Compression stocking can help prevent the development and progression of venous disease in high risk patients. EVLT- ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT - This is the latest and most effective treatment for large vein disease. It has a recurrence rate of less than 2-5%. It involves the use of a fibre optic fibre that is threaded into the vein under local anaesthesia and under duplex ultrasound visualization. The vein is then bathed with liquid anaesthetic under pressure and the laser is turned on as the fibre is slowly drawn out. The vein is ablated or welded shut from the inside. The procedure is painless and there is no down time. A compression bandage and stocking are applied and maintained for about one week. The patient is encouraged to walk and stay mobile. Dr. Strauts provides these innovative approaches to managing his vein patients. Patients can either be referred in or are welcome to make appointments on their own. Consultations are generally covered by the medical plan. The clinic also provides laser treatments for treatment of skin problems and aesthetics which Dr. Strauts has incorporated into his practice over the past 15 years.
