How to impress the teen on your list Philanthropic, innovative gifts top the must-have items for adolescents this Christmas
O
f all the friends, family, neighbours and co-workers on your Christmas list, there’s one group of gift-recipients that are always a challenge to impress – teenagers. In the world of teens, what’s fun and fashionable can change from month to month, so keeping up with the trendiest and most popular gift ideas can take a lot of work. While a safe bet for teens is to buy them a gift card to their favourite store, sometimes it’s nice to get a little more personal and find them something you know they’ll love. Luckily, there are plenty of places on the Semiahmoo Peninsula that can lend a hand, no matter what your teens’ style or preference. JJ + Whiskey in Ocean Park is a great bet if it’s a fashion-loving teen on your list – after all, who doesn’t love returning to school in the new year with great clothes and accessories? In addition to jeans, jackets, tops and sweaters for both men and women, JJ + Whiskey carries a number of great accessories that any teen would be thrilled to find under the tree this year. Expected to be a very popular item this holiday season are Echo Touch gloves – made with a special material on the thumb and forefinger that makes them touch-screen friendly, for use with iPhones and other such devices. These cute and functional gloves come in a variety of colours and will keep your teen’s hands warm and toasty all winter long. Another mega teen trend at the moment, according to the owners and staff at JJ + Whiskey, are Flex Watches. These brightly coloured watches come in 10 different colours and are described as “a symbol of a vibrant, active life.” Each different colour represents a charity from around the world, and for each watch purchased, 10 per cent of its cost is donated to those charities. Watch-owners are encouraged to learn about the charity associated with the colour of their watch, and help raise awareness about the need. Following with the theme of philanthropy – which now, more than ever, is a huge movement among teens and young adults – JJ + Whiskey is also carrying TOMS Shoes. This line of footwear has a “one-for-one” philosophy, meaning that for every pair of shoes purchased, the company donates a pair of shoes to a child in need. Not only are the shoes (which come in both men’s and women’s styles) fashionable, they help to instill the value of giving back, which is more

If you’re shopping specifically for a teen or tween girl, you’ll want to check out Triple Flip at The Shops at Morgan Crossing. Fun and fashionable are the words of choice to describe Triple Flip, where you can find colourful activewear, cozy jackets, pants, winter accessories, furry bags, jewelry and more. One of the best-selling items this time of year is the Minky Dimples jacket, described as “buttersoft and outrageously luxurious.” To keep your little fashionista warm this winter, Triple Flip also has a line of Minky accessories including scarves, mittens, neckwarmers and toques, available in six fun colours. If the teen on your list isn’t overly interested in fashion, Jay’s Clocks on 152 has a great selection of unique gift ideas. Choose from a wide selection of Canucks products, including figurines of all the most popular players, plus model cars, alarm clocks and more. The store also carries an array of sports and movie figurines that are popular this time of year, including famous MLB and NBA players, and movie characters from Sin City, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spawn and more. And for a gift that combines function and style, Jay’s Clocks carries a number of styles of Buffalo brand watches.

Avoid last-minute panic this season There is still plenty of time to ¿nd the perfect present for the one you love
N
o matter how many times we pledge to get an early start on Christmas shopping, it seems that Dec. 25 sneaks up faster and faster with each passing year. If you’re one of the many shoppers on the Semiahmoo Peninsula who has yet to find the perfect gift for that special someone in your life, there’s no need to panic just yet. There are plenty of places around town that can help you find a gift that will have your honey smiling from earto-ear come Christmas morning. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Many husbands struggle with finding something special for their wives, resorting to the alltoo-often-heard phrase, “But she already has everything.” While that may seem true, it’s no excuse not to put some thought and effort into what the lady in your life may want. One safe bet that is hard to get wrong – but will always get a good reaction – is jewelry, as owner of Just Jewelry Joanne Morrison points out: “What woman doesn’t like jewelry?” With a brand new location at High Street on King George Boulevard, Just Jewelry has a stunning array of diverse, hard-to-find pieces from local artisans and around the world. Whether she prefers the classic dainty look or is inclined to accessorize with bold, funky and bright pieces, Just Jewelry can help you find the
perfect thing for under the tree this year. “Layering is big right now, and in order to do that, you need plenty of jewelry,” Morrison explained. “And if it’s not exactly what she’s looking for, she can easily swap it for something else – we’ve got so much to choose from.” Also recently moved in to the shops at High Street is Silhouette Fine Lingerie, where you can find a beautiful selection of lounge and night wear ranging from the sultry and sexy to soft and snuggly. The staff at Silhouette are always happy to help you find something the lady on your list will love, but if you’re not quite brave enough to pick something out on your own, they also sell gift certificates so she can spoil herself with something elegant and fabulous that she’s see page 5

HEALTHY & HELPFUL WAYS TO SAY “I LOVE YOU!” NO HST FREE LOCAL DELIVERY

The new High Street location of Just Jewelry has plenty of gift ideas for women.
Thoughtful presents not so tough to ¿nd from page 4 guaranteed to cherish. Though it may not be as romantic as jewelry or lingerie, New Beauty Institute on Martin Drive has a gift suggestion that any beautyconscious woman would be thrilled to find under the tree. The Sonic Skin Cleansing system by Clarisonic is an innovative and highly sought-after treatment that leaves skin feeling and looking healthier than ever. It removes six-times more makeup than hand-cleansing alone and helps skin-care products absorb better. With the use of the Sonic Skin Cleansing device, pores appear smaller and the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, oily areas, dry skin patches and blemishes are reduced. New Beauty Institute offers three models of the Clarisonic to choose from and with each purchase of the device, owner Caree Ludwar is offering a free month of the Proellixe whole body vibration (a $99 value).
For Him As difficult as it can be to find a unique and thoughtful gift for the “woman who has everything,” some men can be equally difficult to shop for. While there’s likely a long list of tools or sporting gear the man on your list might want, most women aren’t thrilled with the idea of trudging around a hardware store looking for the latest and greatest cordless drill. But if there’s one sure-fire way to impress your man this holiday season, it’s by giving him something near and dear to his heart: beer. The Brewing Experience on King
George Boulevard is one of several local U-Brews that offers gift certificates for batches of delicious hand-crafted beer. One batch of beer from The Brewing Experience is the equivalent of 12 dozen beer, which will save your man the money and hassle of liquor-store runs every weekend. The toughest part of the u-brew process will be choosing what type of beer he wants to make – The Brewing Experience has more than 70 varieties of beer from countries around the world, including Canada, America, Australia, Mexico, Great Britain, Denmark and more. If your man is a little more on the fashionable side, a visit to the new location of Grasby’s Menswear on 32 Avenue is in order. With a great selection of men’s designer fashion from top brands including Hugo Boss, Strellson, J. Lindeberg and more, a mini-shopping spree at Grasby’s will ensure your hubby steps into the new year in style. Though most men may not be quick to admit it, women aren’t the only ones who enjoy a little pampering this time of year. At MenZone Hair Co., men can receive the VIP grooming treatment, whether it’s a simple haircut or traditional hot-towel shave. MenZone even offers specially designed men’s spa packages, which can include a variety of treatments, including a haircut, hottowel shave, facial, foot scrub or massage. It may not be something a man would think to treat himself to, but a gift certificate to MenZone will leave him relaxed, rejuvenated and looking great.

Fight boredom one game at a time Educational, social activities make for popular alternative to video games
I
f you have kids and teens on your gift list this year, chances are there have been requests for the latest video game or tech toy. And while such gifts are a guarantee for an excited reaction come Christmas morning, over the past few years there has also been a shift towards board games and puzzles, which can provide kids and teens with a more social, educational experience and even bring together the whole family. Sandy Smith, co-owner of Cotton ‘N’ Crayon in Ocean Park, said many parents can’t relate to the electronic gaming craze many of their kids are caught up in, whereas board games – both classic and modern – present an opportunity to teach kids new skills while bonding as a family. “With so much electronic gaming going on, you often get parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents that want to initiate a different kind of play. Something a little more social,” Smith explained. The wonderful world of games can start for children as young as three, according to Smith, who has a number of options for the
Melissa Smalley photo
Cotton 'N' Crayon carries a variety of entertaining board games for players of all ages – including Settlers of Catan, Labyrinth and What's Rubbish? three-to-six age range, many based on memory skills and number- or colour-matching. As you move into a slightly older age group (five to nine), Smith said the games become a little more strategic, involving moves both forward and backwards along the
board, which teach kids not to get frustrated by setbacks. Some favourites for this age group include River, Roads and Rails, a picture-matching game where the object is to build up roads, railroads and waterways; and Tell a Story, which helps develop verbal and
imagination skills using picture cards that players use to make up stories. Once you enter the eight to adult age group, the game options are practically endless, starting with the classics of chess and checkers, which Smith said are particularly popular at Christmas time for grandparents who want to engage in some gaming with their grandkids. Perhaps the most popular game in this category, however, is one that Smith said has been going strong since Cotton ‘N’ Crayon first opened 26 years ago. Labyrinth involves a maze built of both fixed and moving pieces, which players can move with each turn. The object of the game is for the players’ characters to move through the maze looking for tokens. Smith said this game is popular with kids, teens and adults alike and doesn’t take too long to play. New this year is an electronic version of Labyrinth, which includes a talking book and includes plenty of magic, danger and mystical creatures. see page 12

Peninsula Cycles owner Damian O'Hagan has a wide selection of bicycles for all ages and riding abilities. A West Coast Golf Group gift card is good for rounds of golf and other items at three different courses, including Hazelmere (below). Melissa Smalley photo
The gifts sports lovers dream about For cycling enthusiasts or golf nuts, the perfect athletic-themed present is close at hand
L
iving in the Lower Mainland, home to several successful and exciting sports teams, it’s easy to understand why there are so many sports enthusiasts in our community. Whether it’s a fan who prefers to indulge in his or her love of sports from the comfort of their living room couch, or one that loves to get out and take part in the action themselves, there are plenty of great options for the perfect gift this holiday season. While any sports lover would probably be thrilled to find tickets to a Canucks game under the Christmas tree, scoring seats to the see the near-Stanley-Cup-winning team can be a difficult – and expensive – task, to say the least. But that doesn’t mean the hockey-lover on your list has to be disappointed come Dec. 25. There’s plenty of exciting hockey action to be taken in right in our own backyard, when the Surrey Eagles take on their BCHL foes from around the province at South Surrey Arena. Not only are tickets to Eagles’ games affordable ($13 for adults, $10 for students/seniors and $7 for kids 6-12), but chances are you’ll be able to catch some rising stars in
action – one notable former Eagle is Montreal Canadien Scott Gomez. Though the Eagles’ season is well underway, there are still plenty of home games scheduled for the new year, plus playoffs should the Birds keep up their winning ways. If you step outside on a sunny day, chances are you’ll see at least a handful of cyclists taking advantage of our beautiful Peninsula landscape while getting some exercise. If there’s a cycling enthusiast on your list this year, Damian O’Hagan of
Peninsula Cycles on 152 Street has plenty of great ideas for under the tree. One popular gift item that O’Hagan recommends is an indoor bike trainer. This device allows a cyclist to use their mountain or road bike indoors, converting it into a stationary bike so enthusiasts don’t have to brave the inclement weather in order to maintain a training regime over the winter. For those who are fearless about facing the cold, wind and rain on
their two-wheeled transportation, O’Hagan carries a number of safety and comfort accessories, including flashing lights for riding in the dark as well as gloves, hats and other apparel to stay warm and dry. While kids’ bikes used to be a huge seller this time of year, O’Hagan admits that he’s seen a decline in bikes as Christmas gifts for young ones over the past decade or so. And while it may be easier to hide a video game in a closet or disguise it in wrapping paper under the tree, Peninsula Cycles has a vast selection of bikes for kids of all ages and riding abilities, including fun and affordable starter bikes for the really young ones. O’Hagan notes that if keeping a bike as a surprise is an issue, they have a layaway program in which they’ll keep it safe and sound until you’re ready to pick it up just before the big day. For the absolute ultimate in cycling accessories, that acts as a gift for the entire family, O’Hagan recommends a Chariot, a multifunctional bike trailer that kids can safely and comfortably ride in behind mom or dad. These hugely popular items – made by a Canadian company see page 11

Apparel, gear and books all great options from page 10 – can be used behind a bike, as a stroller or jogger or towed behind a cross-country skier with the right attachments. For every hockey or cycling enthusiast on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, there is at least one avid golfer, and there are plenty of gift options if you have one on your shopping list this year. At South Surrey’s Hazelmere Golf Course, one of the best bets, according to Mike White, is a West Coast Golf Group gift card. These cards can be used at any of the WCGG courses – Hazelmere, Swan-E-Set or Belmont – for anything from a round of golf, to tennis games, lesson packages and food/drinks. With it being the off-season right now, White said there are a number of great deals to be found at Hazelmere’s pro-shop, including a promotion offering a free round of golf in the 2012 season if you buy an in-stock golf bag. Another stop to make when shopping for the golf-lover on your list is Golf Town at Morgan Crossing. General Manager Ryan Felbel recommends the JEF World of Golf Ultimate Putting System – a

coupons for courses around the province. Though bookworms and sports junkies may not normally have a lot in common, there are some great athletics-themed books out this holiday season that Cathy Jesson of Black Bond Books would recommend to any sports fan. After decades as a familiar face on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, Ron MacLean has released Cornered: Hijinks, Highlights, Late Nights and Insights, which covers his early days in radio and weather forecasting and his years as Don Cherry’s sidekick. Vancouver’s most iconic soccer personality, Bob Lenarduzzi, has also released a book, co-authored by longtime sports journalist Jim Taylor. Bob Lenarduzzi: A Canadian Soccer Story pays homage to the Whitecaps’ president’s longspanning soccer career and his achievements raising the profile of the sport in Canada. Described as “bigger than life in every way,” NBA star Shaquille O’Neal tells all about his career both on and off the basketball court in Shaq Uncut, My Story, a popular seller so far this holiday season in the world of sports books.

from page 7 For older board-game enthusiasts, by far one of the most popular choices for the past few years is Settlers of Catan, a multi-player game appropriate for players aged 10 and up. Players assume the roles of settlers, each trying to build up their settlement while trading and acquiring various resources. As their settlements grow, players are rewarded points and the ďŹ rst to reach a set number of points is the winner. Cotton ‘N’ Crayon also has a number of smaller-scale games – including mini trivia games and word games – as well as singleplayer games including Penguins on Ice and Pathwords. Over at Crescent Beach Toys, one of the most 'tried and tested' games is Jishaku, a two-player magnet game that is easy to set up and perfect for a quick round or two between rivals. Another hugely popular game this year is a slightly cheeky dice game called Doggy Doo, that kids tend to love because of the ‘gross’ factor.

Single-player games are also a popular choice for young ones who may not have a sibling to play with. The game involves feeding a toy dog, then rolling the dice and squeezing his leash based on what the player has rolled. After the food works its way through the dog, eventually, the inevitable happens, and players have a “pooper scooperâ€? to clean up after their toy mutt. When a player cleans up three times, they win. Though it may be slightly crude, this game is popular with kids around six to eight who ďŹ nd the dog’s wagging tail and sound effects hilarious.

With the kids out of school until after New Year's Day, there are plenty of places around the Semiahmoo Peninsula to have a little family fun time.
Family fun beyond Christmas morning T he countdown to Christmas is on, and for many students on the Peninsula, there's only a few more days of school before the doors are closed for Winter break. While the excitement of the holidays can be enough to keep your kids busy for a few days, there's still two full weeks to keep the young ones entertained before they head back to school in January. A perfect way to spend some quality time with your kids, while allowing them to burn off some energy, is ice skating. Centennial Arena (14600 North Bluff Rd.) will be holding Holiday Break Family Skates daily Dec. 19 to Jan 3 (excluding Christmas and Boxing Day), from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the rink is designated for Stick & Puck time – which means face-shield helmets for all children, helmets for adults and plastic pucks and wooden sticks only. Once 12:30 rolls around, it's Family Skate time. After an afternoon of ice skating, you can take your kids to Sandcastle Bowling Lanes for some more affordable family fun. With five-pin and 10 pin lanes, a few hours of bowling is guaranteed fun for all skill levels, and Sandcastle has a full menu of food items, including a kids' menu. Another favourite among young ones on the Semiahmoo Peninsula is a trip to South Surrey Arena to catch the Surrey Eagles playing on home ice. Over the holidays, the Eagles are set to take on Cowichan
Valley Capitals on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are only $13 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, $7 for children ages six to 12 and kids under five are free. If you need to keep the kids occupied while you finish up work or run some errands, the City of White Rock has some winter holiday camps to keep them entertained. Holiday Art Capades, for kids seven to 12, runs at White Rock Community Centre for five days from 1 to 3 p.m. the week of Dec. 19. This program includes a dazzling winter wonderland of festive art activities using plenty of fun materials, and allows kids the chance to make special crafty gifts for their loved ones. Introductory Holiday Hockey programs are offered for kids aged four to six, as well as six to nine years. Participants will learn basic skating, passing and stick-handling skills and rules of the game. Dates and times vary depending on the age group – check out the City of White Rock's Winter Leisure Guide for more details. The South Surrey Recreation Centre also has a number of activities going on over the Christmas break, including dropin sports. Youth volleyball, family sports, youth floor hockey, stay-andplay and pre-teen drop-in are just a few of the things going on at the 14601 20 Avenue facility over the next few weeks – for a full schedule, visit www.surrey.ca

Put a little 'sparkle' under the tree T
he holiday season is all about things that sparkle – from twinkling light displays to beautifully trimmed trees and even the eyes of little ones on Christmas morning. For a gift that truly sparkles, nothing beats jewelry. Whether economical or extravagant, a piece of jewelry under the Christmas tree this year is guaranteed to be greeted with pure happiness. And that joy is sure to last well beyond Boxing Day and New Year’s, according to Keith Davis, owner of International Gems on 152 Street. “Jewelry is a great gift to give at Christmas, it’s timeless, it can be passed down to others, Davis said, noting it’s wise to put some thought into the gift ahead of time. “Being mindful of who you’re buying for and having some direction as far as the piece you want to focus on is a good idea. This time of year, Davis said diamonds are always a popular choice, and International Gems has a large range of pieces to choose from, including diamond pendants and tennis bracelets, studs, hoop earrings and, of course, rings. Christmas is also a popular time for couples to upgrade their wedding bands or engagement rings to something a little nicer
that they perhaps couldn’t afford when they were ďŹ rst married. And while price is something that needs to be considered when shopping for jewelry, Davis said the diversity in pieces at International Gems – from very high-end items to smaller, more affordable gifts – allows shoppers on any budget to ďŹ nd the perfect item for someone special. When it comes to trends in jewelry, one of the most highly sought-after lines for the past few years has been Pandora charms, available at Rochells Jewellers in Semiahmoo Shopping Centre. These elegant and unique bracelets can be customized with hand-ďŹ nished charms that come in hundreds of designs and a range of prices. According to store owner Amin Dhanani, another very popular choice is the Swarovski line of jewelry, made up of elegant pieces adorned with crystals that are sure to bring some sparkle into their recipient’s life. Choose from earrings, necklaces and bracelets – many in special holiday-themed styles – and all with that radiant shimmer Swarovski crystals are famous for. 22 - Peace Arch News LAST MINUTE GIFT GUIDE, Thursday,December December15, 15,2011 2011 GUIDE Thursday,
'Jewelry is the best gift you can receive' from page 21 the perfect gift for their significant other, women who want to surprise their spouse with something special should check out Rochells’ line of high-end watches, including selections from iconic brands such as Gucci and Tissot. If an engagement is on the horizon this holiday season, Kimberley Jewellers on 152 Street can create spectacular custom-designed diamond rings at an affordable price. Even if the jewelry you’re looking for isn’t for an engagement, co-owner Gay Cohen points out diamonds are a safe route for Christmas. “They’re obviously something that every woman wants, but doesn’t necessarily buy for herself,” Cohen said. “They hold their value, and they go with everything.” And while diamonds are popular, they’re certainly not the only option, Cohen added. “Pearls are another lovely route to go, and there’s a whole gamut to choose from,” she said, noting for a traditional classic, cultured pearls will never go out of style. Kimberley Jewellers has also seen a shift in the different types of metals being used over the past year

Diamonds are a popular choice for a gift, such as this 19K white gold with .72 carat (above) or 14K white gold, .89 carat (above right) from Kimberley Jewellers. or so. With the price of gold steadily increasing, Cohen said other metals – stainless steel or silver with gold plating, for example – are being integrated into some beautiful, fashionable designs. For exquisite, hand-crafted custom
designs, Murdoch Jewellers at the shops at High Street on King George Boulevard is where you’ll find Christmas gifts to be cherished for many lifetimes, according to owner Amanda Murdoch. “These unique pieces will be
passed down from generation to generation – it’s not something that’s going to be put in a jewelry box and forgotten about,” Murdoch said. With an array of gift ideas to choose from – including stylish hand-crafted pieces, fine manufactured gem stones, beautiful white gold or yellow gold hoop earrings, drop tanzanite and diamond earrings and more – there is no shortage of options for something special to put under the tree this season. “I think that jewelry is the best gift you can receive on Christmas morning,” Murdoch said. “Anybody opening up a gift-wrapped box with a piece of jewelry inside, it's going to make their lives sparkle.”
May the blessing of His Holy birth fill your hearts with joy and love during this Christmas season and always. For unto you is born this day in the City of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. – Luke 2, Verse 11

A practical gift that keeps on giving I
n and amongst all the hustle and bustle of holiday planning, shopping, wrapping and hosting, sometimes it can be hard to find the time to put a lot of thought into gifts for the ones we love. While there are certainly no shortage of options on the Peninsula for places to find unique, heartfelt gifts, perhaps taking a different approach when it comes to giftgiving can help you come up with a present that will keep on giving well into the new year. The gift of lessons or classes – from music to dancing, cooking, art and more – is something that anyone on your list would be thrilled to receive this Christmas. Not only do they encourage creativity and expression, lessons are something the recipient certainly won’t get bored with by New Year's, as is often the case with toys and gadgets. And there are plenty of talented instructors and teachers on the Semiahmoo Peninsula just waiting to share their knowledge and expertise with up-and-comers. If it’s a young dance enthusiast on your list, Spiral Dance offers classes in different genres for a variety of ages, including jazz, ballet and hip

Young rock-stars-in-training from Todd Brewer School of Music's Rock Band program rehearse at the school's studio in preparation for a show. hop. The White Rock dance studio, which opened in 1994, focuses not only on technical training, but also the development of kinesthetic awareness and how movement can influence brain development. Grown-ups who want to add a little swing into their step would love to receive a gift certificate for Roca Blanca Dance, where classes are offered in a large selection of styles, including the cha cha, rhumba, salsa, swing and many more.
Class sizes at Roca Blanca are kept nice and small to encourage more personal attention, and the certified instructors will help students learn to dance no matter what their previous level of experience, while maintaining a fun, non-intimidating atmosphere. Perhaps you have a future rock star to buy for this year – what better way to get them on their way to super-stardom than music lessons? Tapestry Music on Johnston
Road offers lessons for a variety of instruments – guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, flute, fiddle and more. Lessons are offered afternoon and evenings during the week and during the day on Saturdays, in the music school’s 12 teaching studios in White Rock. Over at the Todd Brewer School of Music, young music enthusiasts from eight to 18 can take part in the school’s Rock Band program. This performance-based class runs once a week, and matches students together into groups to learn how to play songs, encouraging them to practice and get good at their instruments. The program is open to students regardless of their previous music experience, and young Rock Band participants also get the opportunity to perform around the community throughout the year. For a huge selection of lesson and class possibilities, check out the South Surrey Recreation Centre’s Winter Leisure Guide, for programs including dance, music and an array of visual arts. The City of White Rock’s Winter Leisure Guide is also full of great programs, including wood carving, writing, computer classes, theatre and much more.

Time to stock up on stuffing supplies I
n all the excitement and stress of preparing for the fastapproaching holidays, it's important not to forget one of the most entertaining parts of Christmas – stockings! While it's always enjoyable to give the big, exciting presents on Christmas morning, sometimes the smaller gifts can be just as much fun – both to shop for and to give. Stocking stuffers are always a hit, no matter how young or old the recipient is, and there's plenty of great ideas on the Peninsula for unique and entertaining trinkets. While traditional stocking staples aren't to be ignored – items like candy and chocolate, woolly socks, fun cosmetics and other novelties – taking the time to personalize stockings based on the person's style and interests will help to make this Christmas morning one to remember for years to come. If you're shopping for a woman who enjoys all things whimsical yet elegant, Romancing the Home in Ocean Park has a ton of great stocking-stuffer items that are unique, stylish and affordable. Zebra-print hammers with screwdriver attachments and staplers are just a few examples

Other irresistible knick-knacks include girly notepads and glitzy pens, napkins and coasters with funny and inspirational sayings on them, sparkling keychains and staror heart-shaped paperweights, to name just a few.
Romancing the Home also carries a great line of bath and body products made in Kelowna called Barefoot Venus, with products that range from $5 up to about $20. While jewelry may not be a common stocking-stuffer item, you can find some beautiful and affordable items at Romancing the Home, including a huge assortment
of locally made earrings, charms by Thomas Sabo and fun, edgy pieces from Shine Jewelry. The store is also carrying pearl bracelets in pink, silver and white made by a local designer, which are selling for $20 with proceeds going towards fighting breast cancer. Set a theme for fun, Elgin Centre diverse stockings from page 28 stuff is for a craft enthusiast, Laura's Fashion Fabrics on Johnston Road has a number of items that will fit the bill. Scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, thread, matt books and boxed embroidery – you can even pick out some great new sewing patterns to hide in the stocking. Other items to consider tracking down, depending on the recipient's craft of choice, include scrapbooking paper and supplies, stencils, paint and paint brushes, a miniature craft light or wool/yarn. For the foodie on your list, Kitchen Therapy at Grandview Corners has several possibilities when it comes to stocking stuffers. The Poachpod – a flexible silicone cooking tool for poaching eggs, baking and molding – is one highly recommended item. This tool allows you to float and poach an egg in boiling water like a lily pad on a pond. When the egg is ready, flip the pod inside-out and push the perfectly dome-shaped egg out. Kitchen Therapy also carries Colourworks cooking tools – a bright and comprehensive range of essential kitchen accessories, including tongs, mashers, ladles, spatulas, pasta servers and whisks – which would make for a fun addition to any food-lover's stocking. Finally, the Garlic Pro E-Zee Dice is a convenient no-touch garlic dicer that can perfectly chop up to four cloves at a time, and can be used for hot peppers, nuts and shallots as well. If your stocking recipient prefers the great outdoors to the confines of a kitchen, Mountain Magic on King George Boulevard has a few things that will be well-received come Dec. 25. As the cold, dry winter begins to hit hard, any outdoorsman or woman will need good lip protection – Mountain Magic carries a line of lip balm made with avocado oil that is great for both cold and hot weather. They've also got a number of other great winter items, such as touques, balaclavas and gloves, as well as the ever-popular Swiss army knife. Slippers are one of those classic stocking-stuffer items that recipients young and old are thrilled to receive. Over at Strides Pedorthics, you can find a line of slippers that combines comfort with proper foot support. Manufactured by Haflinger, these slippers are made of natural materials, with a non-slip rubber sole and cork footbed that offer the same much-needed support of a

Must-have tech toys for 'big kids' on list I t’s no secret that Santa’s little elves have come a long way since the days of making only toy trucks, dolls and blocks for under the Christmas tree. It seems with each passing year, the hottest gadgets and must-have electronics are more and more intricate, intriguing and impressive. Thankfully for the big man in red, there are plenty of places on the Semiahmoo Peninsula where you can check out this season’s top tech gifts. According to Bryan Ayres, owner of Ayreborn Audio Video on King George Boulevard, one of this year’s big sellers is the Samsung Galaxy Player. This multi-functional device, powered by Android, is Samsung’s answer to the iPod touch or iPad, but can do a lot more, according to Ayres. “If you have other Samsung equipment in your house – a smart TV for example – the video from your TV can play on your tablet anywhere around your house,” Ayres explained. It can also connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi free of monthly service fees for high-speed web browsing, social media updates and access to more than 250,000 apps in the Android market. With a sleek,

Music, photo accessories big sellers this year from page 30 colours and on special right now at Ayreborn Audio Video for only $199. Newly arrived at Ayreborn is an iPod speaker system described as “the premier compact sound system for music lovers.” The Monitor Audio iDeck 200 combines the wide-band sound of much larger HiFi systems, but with the convenience of the dock-system genre. Though it’s a slightly higher price point than some of the other iPod systems in store, selling for $599, Ayres expects the iDeck 200 to be a big seller this year. “It is ultimately the best iPod stereo we’ve heard.” For a sound system to enhance your television-watching experience, Ayres recommends the Samsung sound bar, a 40-inch wide wall-mountable speaker bar that offers both great sound and a sleek, sophisticated design. This hassle-free speaker system is the perfect complement to any flat-panel TV, and delivers 280 watts of virtual surround sound and thunderous bass from the wireless subwoofer. Shedding light on holiday tradition Candles not only an ancient Christmas custom, but a perfect gift idea
T
hey may not be as familiar a yuletide symbol as a Christmas tree or Santa Claus, but they are an integral part of traditional holiday celebrations, dating back to the earliest days of Christianity. Over the centuries, candles have evolved from being a meaningful symbol of the spirit of Christmas to a must-have decor item, and nowadays, a thoughtful and popular gift idea. The tradition of placing candles in windows on Christmas Eve began several centuries ago in Europe, as a symbol of Christ, burning throughout the night to light the way for Mary and Joseph. In many European countries, this ancient custom is still practised today. Throughout the Victorian ages, revellers began placing candles on the Christmas tree as the symbol of the star, attached to the tree branches with melted wax or pins. Though lit candles on a tree would be considered a safety hazard in our homes today, candles are a staple of holiday decor for many people, adorning mantles, table centrepieces and window sills. Candles have also become a great gift idea – whether it’s a box of coloured tealights as a stocking stuffer or in a gift basket, or a scented votive candle in a beautiful glass holder, candles make a great gift for even the toughest to shop for on your list. At Home Again Home Again, you will find a vast selection of candles in all shapes, sizes,

Flameless candles a popular alternative from page 34 artificial. These unique candles provide all the peaceful, festive ambience of a real candle, but without any of the risk of having an open flame. According to owner Darlene Spooner, these flameless candles were named one of the top five best gifts for 2011 at a Toronto Christmas show earlier this year. Home Again has a number of other flameless candle options as well, including battery-operated tealights and votives that provide hundreds of hours of use before the battery needs to be replaced, as well as flameless Christmastree shaped candles and water-activated battery-operated floating candles that change colour. When it comes to the traditional wick-and-flame candle, Home Again also has plenty to choose from. For the eco-conscious on your list, check out the Simplicity line of candles, which come in both
scented and non-scented pillars and tealights. These candles are cleanburning and non-toxic, and the wax is 100 per cent biodegradable and comes from a renewable energy source that is free of pesticides and herbicides. These enviro-friendly candles also burn about 30 per cent longer than traditional paraffin candles, and contain no genetically modified material. If you’re shopping for not only a selection of candles, but a holder as well, Home Again has some very festive choices this season, including reflecting tealight holders in red amaryllis or green poinsettia. There is a good selection of crystal tealight and votive holders in a variety of designs – available in both clear or a more festive red – as well as candelabras, perfect for the mantle. Deals World on Johnston Road also has a great selection of candles and holders this time of year – from packages of affordable tealights and votives in all scents and colours, to
