More than three months after residents of 32 Avenue were promised a letter of support from the City of Surrey for their fight to have big trucks moved off their street, Mayor Dianne Watts has sent a note to TransLink. But its message wasn’t strong enough for at least one resident, who said the delay has harmed their campaign. Surrey council voted Oct. 17 to back the 32 Avenue Community Alliance with a letter of support, but the letter didn’t go out in time for a Dec. 7 TransLink board meeting. The Bing Thom firm will oversee site selection, location of the new facility on the new site, budget preparation and project timelines. It will consult with the community, city staff, the steering committee and other stakeholders to deliver the project program, which is expected to be completed by this July. Watts said in the press release that the city hopes for participation from senior levels of government and the private sector. That may be a faint hope at present. Both the federal and provincial governments are very restraintminded at present, and other than naming rights, private sector participation will likely be minimal, given the current economic environment. The idea of a theatre in the city centre is a good one. However, timing is crucial. Residents need to pay attention to the project’s timeline when more details come out this summer. Airport employee thanked for keeping Grey Cup on schedule across B.C.

As Canadian sport’s oldest trophy makes the rounds in B.C. this week, Grey Cup fans have a well-known South Surrey runner to thank for ensuring the historic prize actually made it to scheduled appearances in their communities. Ferg Hawke, who works at Vancouver Airport, had arranged to touch base with Surrey-White Rock MLA and friend Gordon Hogg before Hogg’s connecting flight to Kelowna Tuesday afternoon. Hogg had seen the Grey Cup on and off the plane at Comox, and had watched as it was marked ‘fragile’ at YVR and sent on its way for loading for the next leg to Kelowna. With a few moments to spare, Hogg encouraged Hawke to go down to where the cup was waiting with the other luggage, pull it out and have his photo taken with it. Hawke jumped at the opportunity, but returned moments later

with news Hogg wasn’t expecting. “The cup didn’t arrive,” he was told. “I said, ‘It’s gotta be there – we’re leaving in five minutes.’ (Hawke) made some phone calls; apparently, it had slipped off the ramp somewhere.” Hogg – who called Peace Arch News from Penticton to share tales from the tour – said he thanked Hawke profusely for saving the day. “It wouldn’t have arrived if Ferg hadn’t gone down and checked.” Won by the B.C. Lions Nov. 27, the Grey Cup – with a number of Lions players – has, since Sunday, made appearances in communities from Coquitlam to Victoria, and was scheduled for events in Kamloops last night and this morning, before heading to 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Prince George and Burnaby. Friday evening, it will be at the South Surrey Boston Pizza from 6-8 p.m. for a KidSport fundraiser, then will head to Cloverdale Satur-

day morning before gracing a private banquet luncheon with the Surrey Titans – who claimed their first midget football title in December – at Ocean Park Community Hall. Hogg, who was on the Grey Cup planning committee, said the tour is about more than celebrating the Lions’ victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It’s about local pride, recognizing KidSport – an organization that helps remove financial barriers that may prevent some children from playing organized sports, for which the tour has so far raised $1,500 – and celebrating sports heroes who may never make headlines, but well-deserve the title. “It’s not all about the people who are in the front pages,” Hogg said. “When they see the cup, we’re trying to give that message.”

It’s 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and Jagrup Brar has been home for two hours. After spending 31 days virtually homeless, living on the province’s monthly welfare rate, the MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood is settling back into more familiar surroundings. Wearing sandals, slacks and a zip-necked pullover sweater, Brar reclines into a large leather sectional in his 3,000-square-foot Sullivan home. It’s a far cry from the living conditions he’s been able to afford on $610 – the amount given to single employable people on social assistance who are looking for work – for the past month. The experiment was part of the Welfare Challenge put forward, and funded, by the Vancouver-based group Raise the Rates. He’s lost 11 kilograms (24 pounds). But more significant than that, Brar says he has been permanently changed by his experiences on the street; the veil of blissful ignorance about pov-

erty in B.C. has been lifted. The most stark finding Brar discovered were the living conditions in Vancouver’s Single Room Occupancy buildings (SROs), where he resided for 15 days. “Even if you have every skill possible you need to live your life, if you are put in that place, it is hard,” Brar says. “How can you take a shower if there are 100 people waiting for that shower?” In addition, there are no laundry facilities. Obtaining work would be virtually impossible under those circumstances, he says. “If you have an interview, what do you do?” As a result, people living in SROs often resort to binning or begging to augment their welfare incomes. However, current policy states that any money earned from other sources must be clawed back by the province – a policy Brar says makes anything less than a full-time job not worth pursuing. And while Vancouver’s SROs were the most decrepit environment Brar came across, one of

the most eye-opening discoveries for him was the high number of rooming houses in Surrey. He had expected to see a shocking state of secondary suites in Surrey. But that paled in comparison to rooming houses. Some he saw looked like abandoned buildings and he was shocked to see people living in them. And taxpayers, he says, are footing the bill. Brar says there is no doubt the lack of affordable housing is the number-one issue touching people living in poverty. And with 137,000 children in this province living in poverty, he fears the problem will be getting much worse, and seems authentically confounded when he asks how such a rich country can allow people to live in this condition. Moving forward, Brar plans to push for changes to the exemption of earning income while on welfare, improvements to child care and addressing poor working conditions for farm workers. It will be a battle, he says – “but we can’t afford not to do anything.”

Timing won’t hurt residents: city Surrey general manager of engineering Vincent Lalonde said his counterpart at the transportation authority has assured him the timing of the letter is not an issue and the question of trucks on 32 Avenue will be reviewed. “TransLink will do their assessment now,” Lalonde said. Lalonde blamed the delayed letter on a postponed transportation committee meeting that had been scheduled for Nov. 9 but could not proceed because the minimum number of council members failed to show up. Lalonde said the letter was sent as soon as the committee had gone over the matter.

Bernet said she moved into a brand-new townhouse project in the 15400-block of 32 Avenue two years ago, only to discover the truck-route status meant a nearconstant parade of heavyweight trucks just a few metres away. “The house shakes and rattles. Arbitrary and unreasonable: judge Wang has disputed his ticket, and cannot be considered guilty of alleged street racing until a traffic court hearing before a “legally trained judicial justice of the peace” has decided the matter, the judge ruled. That hearing is “some months away,” McEwan notes. A second driver in the group, Yim Kwan Kot, missed the deadline for filing his appeal by one day. McEwan said he would have lifted Kot’s suspension as well, if it were not for the missed deadline. McEwan gave Kot 60 days to decide if he wants to formally

ask the court to overlook the late filing and hear his case. At least two others are disputing driving bans in connection with the Aug. 31 incident. The lawyer for Dan Na Zhu and Zhuo Huang told PAN in December his clients’ rights were violated when the superintendent suspended Zhu from driving for 20 months and Huang for 16 months. “The superintendent had before him no information that would allow anybody to conclude fairly that either of those two individuals was involved in racing,” Russ Chamberlain said.

A photographed opportunity As followers of local media already know, SurreyFleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar spent last month walking in someone else’s shoes. Meeting the challenge raised by the Raise The Rates group, he has tried to subsist on the $610 monthly welfare rate. And, as many have pointed out, the shoes he was wearing were not his: he had the luxury of being able to walk away from them; he isn’t poor, or unemployed; and he knew throughout his ordeal that he would, in the end, return to his family, with the certainty of finding a roof over his head and knowing where his next meal is coming from. But, at the very least, Brar has had a taste, firsthand, of what it’s like to be poor and marginalized in our society. That’s more than can be said of many politicians from all levels, whose idea of getting their hands dirty is donning a hardhat and rolling up their sleeves for a photo op and a few well-scripted platitudes, before rolling off to lunch – leaving actual policy in the hands of bureaucrats. If the NDP MLA’s journey was a self-serving publicity stunt, it is clearly one that cost him a little more in physical discomfort than many politicians have risked over the course of numerous terms in office. It can be argued that it is an exercise in futility with no practical outcome, serving to reinforce an entrenchment of political attitudes rather than promote a dialogue on possibilities. After all, say some, obviously the welfare rate is too low for our needy to thrive – if not survive – on. For others, it was never intended as a permanent income, and a higher rate will simply encourage more of our wastrels to apply for it rather than become self-reliant. But if Brar’s exercise in poverty has, at the very least, got people discussing an issue too often side-stepped by the more squeamish among us, it has reached at least some level of inarguable value. The MLA claims his experience has made him a changed man. We can hope that change becomes manifest in more activism on behalf of the poor in his own riding and beyond. We can hope that his actions can motivate other leaders to provide policy alternatives to address the vicious cycle of poverty that exists on our streets. But there is meaningful follow up by people of conscience, Brar’s experience – no matter how earnest and well-intended – will end up being considered just another photo-op. And that would be a shame.

We’re still left holding the bag Editor: I would like to point out that most plastic bags do not make it to the dump empty. People in single-family homes can easily take their trash out to a garbage can with little trouble, although having it in a leakproof container would be beneficial. The far greater number living in large apartment or condo buildings have a different problem. They must carry their trash through hallways and stairs or elevators to a common garbage area, and have no choice but to use plastic bags to accomplish the task without making a mess. The free plastic bags provided in most stores serve a very good purpose in that they fit nicely in under-sink trash containers, as well as other containers around the home. If they were to be banned, everyone would have to replace them with the same type bags – the same type, that is, except that they would have to pay for them. Doesn’t the re-use of those bags make more sense? The bottom line is there would be no net benefit to the dump facility, and more paper bags would be used and wasted, creating more trash. If they are “free,” it will be because the cost is already factored into the price of products sold. And that cost will be much more than it now costs to provide plastic. Plastic bags are produced from byproducts of petroleum. If not used for the present purpose, you may be sure the industry would find some new product to manufacture that would still find its way to the dump – assuming they don’t just sell the same bags direct to those apartment/condo dwellers. Those who can only think green should spend a bit of time researching the alternatives before coming up with their grand ideas. Richard Bradley, White Rock

We have a right to feel safe Editor: Re: Punishing shift is concerning, Jan. 26 letters. I respect the many opinions expressed by Pat Petrala in this letter. However, Petrala takes the position that these opinions on Crime Bill C-10 are correct and other voters need to question the government’s misguided imposition of their will. Petrala invites others to share her opinion and write regularly to ensure the MP knows he may not be voting in accordance with the majority of constituents. She also mentions Bill C-10 was rushed through the House of Commons without considering the legitimate concerns of individuals, organizations and future generations. This reasoning is speculative and appears to be based on opinion. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, no matter how

diverse it may be. Even the Charter recognizes that “everyone has the freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression.” Petrala suggests Bill C-10 is all about punishment and exclusion and would shift justice away from prevention and rehabilitation. The intention of Bill C-10 appears to be toward the protection of society and incarceration of dangerous offenders for serious offences. Our justice system, including the courts has not accomplished this. It is evident from daily news reports and victims of crime that there are many dangerous offenders on our streets, committing serious crimes with impunity and without fear of incarceration. Rehabilitation is not a consideration for habitual offenders with long criminal records. The same Peace Arch News had an article on the front page, stating that in the last month Surrey alone has seen eight shootings, four of them fatal (Legalize pot to disarm gangsters: expert, Jan. 26).

It is apparent our present justice system is not affording adequate protection from dangerous criminals and habitual sex offenders, and it is incumbent on our government to correct this situation so people can feel safe on our streets. Charles Parrott, Surrey

Up to owners to keep peace Editor: Re: Life’s a (dog) beach, at times, Jan. 26 letters. I have a lovely, well-behaved dog that we have spent a lot of time teaching ourselves how to train. A dog is representative of the owner’s ability to train it. I would love to walk my dog everywhere, but I realize not everyone likes dogs, or wants your dog to come up to them, sniff them, jump up on them or even lick them.

I am a runner and have had dogs chase me, jump up on me, and growl at me for just running by. Yesterday, while running through a park in White Rock, a little dog ran out in front on the path – retractable leashes should be discontinued – and nearly tripped me. It was barking and nipping at me. When I yelled at it, the owner blamed the attack on me saying I shouldn’t run past a dog since they innately want to attack anything that runs. Huh? I didn’t know we are now supposed to cater to dogs in public areas. Owners simply don’t take responsibility for their dogs; they don’t keep them in check, they allow them to bark/growl/attack people and other dogs, and they don’t pick up after them – pure laziness and inconsideration for every other person in the community. Until these issues are addressed and dealt with, I am glad there are areas that are safe from these spoilt, ill-behaved owners and dogs. Jayda Home, Surrey

Editor: There is reason to be genuinely concerned about TransLink’s ongoing money woes. As I sit here on SkyTrain – it looks as if it will take me up to twice as long to get downtown as I’d anticipated, due to yet another service delay – I’m pleased with the announcement that construction will finally begin on the long-overdue Evergreen Line. But I wonder how the TransLink Mayors Council will actually pay for it, as well as expanded rapid transit and bus service throughout the region. My prediction? TransLink’s finances will continue to be a victim of political paralysis, and homeowners should expect big increases in their property taxes to close the gap. Under TransLink’s newest governance structure, the provincial government has effectively downloaded the responsibility of operating regional transit to TransLink without giving them any way to pay the bills. There was much hoopla last September when the Mayors Council approved an additional two-cent-perlitre gas tax to fund the first $40 million of its $400 million portion of the Evergreen Line costs. But a report in mid-December showed the transit authority came up eight per cent short on what it expected to generate from its existing 15-cent-per-litre gas tax in the region. The total shortfall came close to a hefty $26 million. As TransLink’s many gas taxes continue to increase the

price of gas, more and more people choose to buy their gas outside of TransLink’s jurisdiction – in Aldergrove or south of the border. Even more are choosing to buy less gas and opt to take transit instead of driving, only exacerbating the pressure already on the system. It is safe to say that as the newest two-cent-per-litre tax raises the price of gas even further, the Mayors Council can’t possibly expect to raise the full $40 million they had predicted they would be able to. The council and province have less than 12 months to come up with some sort of panacea funding solution for the $400 million they agreed to pay, minus what they are still capable of raising though the two-cent gas tax. If they can’t find the money, the Evergreen Line will be funded through – you guessed it – your property taxes. And for those who believe that the provincial government may provide the Mayors Council with a host of new financing options to close the gap, think again. History has shown us time and again, the provincial government is likely to veto any funding option deemed politically unpalatable, like a vehicle levy, especially given the prospect of a provincial election in May 2013. It is high time the province overhauled its legislation governing TransLink to put local officials back in charge of its operation and finances. Otherwise, we will continue to suffer from taxation without representation. Stephanie Ryan, Surrey

A masked man, believed to be from Surrey, allegedly robbed a Kelowna pawn shop and then opened fire at police officers during his getaway. Surveillance cameras caught images of who police believe is Surrey’s Devan Markcus Wong, 19, robbing Premier Jewelry and Loan on Dec. 6 last year. Cameras mounted to the dash of a police car showed that RCMP were shot at when they arrived. A second later, the cruiser camera shows a police dog and handler pursuing the suspect. The suspect scaled a three-metre fence before the dog caught up with him. He escaped down an alley. The suspect is believed to have carjacked a vehicle, forcing the occupant to drive him to a west Kelowna trailer park, where he switched vehicles. Rules change for HOV HOV lanes on Highway 1 will be open to all traffic on the weekends starting this Friday as construction on the freeway widening project intensifies. Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project crews need to start closing lanes during the day on weekends and opening up the HOV lanes is expected to minimize delays by keeping at least two lanes open each way at all times. The rule change allowing unlimited use of HOV lanes between Grandview Highway and the Port Mann Bridge will be in effect from 7 p.m. Fridays through 6 a.m. Mondays, starting Feb. 3. Normal HOV lane restrictions requiring a minimum two occupants remain in effect during weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. When the new Port Mann Bridge opens, HOV lanes will extend east as far as 200 Street in Langley and will return to their normal 24-hour schedule. Construction is scheduled to finish in 2013.

Surrey association offers tutoring help The Learning Disabilities Association Fraser South is offering after-school tutoring for children aged six to 14 who struggle with reading, comprehension, spelling and writing skills. In Surrey, one-to-one sessions are held at Janice Churchill Elementary, 8226 146 St. The program has operated in Surrey since 1999, but expanded this year into Langley at Douglas Park Community School, 5409 206 St. Children are assisted by specially trained tutors who work under the direction of an experienced special education teacher using strategies developed to help with learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, or any child who is behind in reading or writing. A child does not have to be diagnosed as having a learning

disability to attend the tutoring program. It is estimated at least 10 to 15 per cent of the population has learning disabilities; many have difficulty learning to read and write but remain undiagnosed and not remediated. LDAFS officials say the registered charity’s programs are designed to help such children by providing early intervention at an affordable fee. Cost is $23/hour; some partial subsidies are available for families in financial need. Tutoring is available Feb. 6 to May 24. One is that taking better care of your health is a proven recipe for living longer, having less chronic illness, slowing down the effects of aging, having more energy and sleeping better. Hister noted that recent studies have shown the average life expectancy for men is 78 and for women, 83. “In every country in the world, women live longer than men,” Hister said. Among the principal reasons, he said, are that women have social support systems that men, typically, don’t cultivate. They also sleep more efficiently than men, he added. “But the most important reason is that they make better lifestyle choices – women follow health advice,” he said. “Women who live like men, die like men.” While heart attacks are a leading cause of death among the older popu-

lation, Hister said, some 90 per cent of heart attacks occur from “preventable causes.” “Heart disease is virtually a manmade disease,” he said. The key elements of a healthy lifestyle, Hister maintained, are not smoking; exercising regularly; eating sensibly; reducing stress; maintaining a healthy weight; getting good quality sleep; and drinking alcohol only in moderate amounts. “The single most important healthy change you can make is exercise,” Hister said. This can include aerobics, and exercises that improve balance and flexibility, he said, although people should also walk regularly and avoid relying on “labour-saving devices.”

Here are a few recommendations from experienced naturalists for general wildlife viewing: • Be prepared to quietly wait, as often a bird or animal will

approach from curiosity • Conversely, avoid directly moving towards wildlife, which only herds them away • Know where to look; every animal (and plant) has a specific habitat where it thrives best • Visit the right habitat at the right time of year; this is especially

important around Boundary Bay which has many seasonal species, migrating through on amazingly punctual schedules • Consult tide tables before a trip to the dyke; incoming high tides are often best for birds • Take proper equipment (binoculars, telescope, long lens, field guides) • Never harass wildlife by going too close for a better view or photograph, and restrain your dog (or leave it at home); dogs are viewed as predators, even if your dog never chases birds • Join a naturalists’ group for a field trip to meet other enthusiasts and have fun! Ocean Park couple makes eco-friendly tissues

Sustainable hankies nothing to sneeze at Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

Chris and Regula Appenzeller have a nose for making a difference. And a venture into offering those with the sniffles – or other issues that call for tissues – an alternative to disposable wipes is starting to pay off for the Ocean Park couple. The Appenzellers launched their “eco-chic alternative” business, Hank&Cheef, four years ago, not long after Regula happened across one of the cloth Muppets hankies she’d used as a child. Cloth hankies have long been the norm in European households, she said, and hers – rooted in Switzerland – was no different. The memento got her thinking about how society has come to rely on disposable products, and what could be done to turn the tide towards sustainability. “I thought, ‘why is this not done anymore?’” she said. Four months later, Hank&Cheef was born. And while they’ve since built a faithful clientele, the Appenzellers’ biggest break came last month, when the hankies were featured on the Marilyn Denis Show – an entertainment and lifestyle talk show that features “Canadian and international celebrities and experts, established and emerging alike.”

“Eco expert” Candace Batista highlighted the hankies during a Beat the Flu the Eco Way segment. In the live broadcast Dec. 7, Batista – who had emailed the Appenzellers out of the blue to ask for a sample of their product – described the colourful squares as “awesome little hankies.” “Aren’t they adorable?” she says, to which Denis quips, “They’re nice until they get dirty.” The hankies were among 10 ecofriendly products showcased in the segment. The clip created “just amazing” awareness of Hank&Cheef, said Regula, citing “a definite surge in online activity” that followed the broadcast. The Appenzellers say they have fielded interest in their product from big-box chain stores. But a desire to keep their hankies locally produced has kept them out of that market. It takes three to four weeks to produce one batch of 5,000 hankies. (Five stock designs sell in sets of three 8½ squares for $15.75; a sixth 12-by-12-inch design is available singly; custom orders are also available.) The pace, volume and price can’t compare with far lower production costs offered in Asia. “It means we can’t come down to the price (chain stores) are looking for,” Chris said. And while the decision also

means they can’t quite quit their day jobs yet – Regula is a parttime communications specialist for the Arthritis Society; Chris is a machinist – positive customer feedback regarding the choice further fuels the Appenzellers’ determination to stick with it. In addition to being locally produced, the cloths are made using water-based dyes and packaged in recyclable materials. While they are designed, printed and sewn locally – Regula creates the designs; printing is done in Burnaby – because the fabric is sourced from Turkey, the Competition Bureau of Canada prohibits the Appenzellers from claiming the hankies are made in Canada. But that hasn’t quelled their determination to make a difference. According to the couple, switching to just one of the cloth alternatives can help save 170,000 “virgin trees.” The typical household spends $30,000 on disposable tissues over the course of an average lifetime, they added. “It’s a habit to constantly reach for a disposable tissue,” Regula said. “We noticed this when we had our daughter.” The hankies are now a regular fixture in six-year-old Kaija’s school bag. Jokers and Prophets is the name of a powerful new album of original folk rock songs by longtime Peninsula music maker Steve Gidora (The Wheat in the Barley) and lead vocalist Medderick, musical collaborators on such projects as Home Grown and Dad since the ’70s. And it’s a sure bet the CD release party and concert this Sunday (Feb. 5, 8 p.m., White Rock Elks Lounge, 1469 George St.) will be a focal point for many who have listened to, and worked with, the two musicians over the years. The close-knit coterie who helped make Jokers and Prophets includes such luminaries as Gidora’s Wheat in the Barley bandmates Ed Johnson (percussion, guitars, bass and recording engineer) Mickey Hovan (bass), Neil Harnett (guitars and background vocals), Jan Sentell (background vocals) and Darryl Havers (keyboard – who works with Johnson in Brickhouse and Harnett on other

projects). But the project also features Gidora friends such as Tom Hawken (five-string banjo, an associate since the ’60s) and Barry Laffin (he, Gidora and Sentell were members of Bargain At Half A Price in the ’70s). Well-known locals who also made contributions include Jordan Carrier, Fanny Starchild, Rick Dalgarno of Blue Voodoo, and Wheat in the Barley’s Victor Smith and Mark Dowding. The atmosphere of friendship was important to Gidora on the long-awaited project – a chance to get down on disc some songs he’s written over the last half decade (including Crystal Mountains, Africa/One World, Heart Breakin’ Band and King of the Fools) which didn’t seem to fit the Wheat in the Barley playlist. “They’re a little bit more modern contemporary style,” Gidora said. “I have some other songs that I’ve played with the group, like No Regrets, that work because they that have a folky, Celtic sound; but this stuff is just more open to a guitar, bass, drum and keyboards format.” Gidora agreed that some of the material is also grittier in melodic and lyric content. “There are a few ‘heartbreak’ tunes, but there are also songs with a definite outlook on the world situation; songs that are a little bit political,” he said. It seemed natural to call on his friend, Medderick, who now resides in Armstrong, to sing lead vocals on the album, and who contributes two of his own songs, Boulevard and Shattered.

He can do the old Kris Kristofferson tunes or Tom Waits or Van Morrison material. “We go back all these years and we haven’t ever grown apart.” Harnett was also a natural choice to help with the album, Gidora added. “I’ve known Neil almost as long as I’ve known Medderick,” he said. “We’ve all jammed together over the years.” Johnson, also co-producer as well as engineer, made a significant contribution to the sound of the album, Gidora said. “He was getting his own studio

together at the time I was ready to record the CD and he thought the songs were definitely worth recording,” he said. “He added some acoustic guitar, played some power chords on Boulevard, and I think he’s even got some background vocals in there. “And while I got Neil, he brought in Darryl from Brickhouse. The keyboard plays a big role in this album, and Darryl is a real ‘less is more’ guy – even when he’s on two tracks at once, it’s not too much.” Gidora noted the album was mixed by Larry Anschell at Turtle Studios and mastered by Tony Chamberlist, another well-known musician on the local scene. “It’s been a real Peninsula project, this album,” he said. Gidora said he’s satisfied with

the final product, which will be available for sale ($15) at Sunday’s gig. “I think the flow of the songs works really well – it’s cool how it all came together. You can change mixes and change the fades at the end, but the real arrangements are there; the parts are all there.” Gidora noted that the song Crystal Mountains has already received favourable feedback from a Nashville-based producer – even before the CD was pressed. “I was playing it straight-ahead bluegrass style, but Neil got a funky rhythm going in there,” Gidora said. “It works beautifully – and we didn’t even have to redo the vocal.” Tickets are available at the door or from Gidora at 604-723-3052 or sgidora@hotmail.com

‘Mr. O Canada’ joins choir as new musical director Alex Browne Arts Reporter

The Peninsula-based Pacific Showtime Men’s Chorus has started a new year with a new musical director – none other than Mr. O Canada himself, Mark Donnelly. The famed anthem singer, opera singer, voice teacher and leader of classical vocal ensembles replaces the group’s well-respected former director, Gareth Evans, who retired at the end of last year. “We’re very pleased that Mark agreed to join us,” said chorus president Leigh Anderson. “Mark has been out to two rehearsals so far – bringing two of his sons, who are great singers themselves – and he’s already introduced a new song to us.” Pacific Showtime Men’s Chorus – primarily an a cappella group rooted in barbershop singing has already established a positive reputation over the last six years in shows and events in venues all over the Lower Mainland, including two produced by the group itself. “Our mission is to provide

The White Rock Tritons are about to get a boost in numbers – and if all goes well, talent, too. With an eye towards improving the depth and talent at the association’s highest levels, White Rock-South Surrey Baseball Association has successfully lobbied two of amateur baseball’s governing bodies – B.C. Minor Baseball and Little League BC – to allow for co-operation between WRSSBA’s bantam AAA squad and its junior and senior Tritons programs. The bantam squad, which is entering just its second year of existence in White Rock, plays under the B.C. Minor Baseball banner, while the two Tritons

teams play in Little League. In previous seasons, teams in each league have not been allowed to associate with one another. Now, the bantam AAA team, for 13- and 14-year-old players, will be allowed to take part in joint practices with the Junior (U16) and Senior (U18) Tritons’ teams. The change affects baseball associations province-wide. “We want to be able to develop young players as best we can, and this helps us do that. It basically provides another feeder team for the Tritons,” said Senior Tritons head coach Russ Smithson. “It’s long been an issue in other associations.” The bantam AAA team was originally started in White Rock because, Smithson said, there

BUTCHARD, Marjorie Jean of White Rock, BC passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Peace Arch Hospital. Born in Carstairs, AB, October 6, 1931 to Harvey and Ethel Buchanan, Marjorie spent her early years on the prairies and moved to BC in 1947. She worked for the BC Telephone Company in Langley as a telephone operator until she married Ronald Butchard in 1953 in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Reta in Langley. They subsequently settled in the Panorama Ridge area of Surrey. Later, she joined her husband publishing the Export Canada Directory and Quick Canadian Facts. She was an active member of the UCW and the Colebrook United Church for more than 40 years. Family was important to her and she enjoyed helping to look after all her grandchildren whenever she could, spending time with other family members as often as possible, and researching the genealogical history of her family. Marjorie leaves her sons Randy (Janice), Lawrie (Joanne), Brad (Doreen),

grandchildren Courtney, Megan,

Chelsey, Trevor, Kate, Kim, Brandyn and Keiran. She also leaves her sister Reta Claughton, brothers Harold Buchanan and Gerald Buchanan as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Ronald and brother Kenneth. The family would like to thank Dr. Geraldine Daniel, and all the doctors and nurses at the Peace Arch Hospital Hospice for the wonderful care given. And a special thank you to Margaret Forster. The memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Peace Arch Hospital Foundation or the BC Cancer Foundation.

HESKETH, James James Hesketh was born in Manchester, England on January 10, 1922 and passed away peacefully on January 30 at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock B.C. Jim joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 17 and was soon transferred to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan as a mechanic on Spitfires. It was in Moose Jaw that he met his wife, Nellie (nee Patterson). During World War II Jim and Nellie returned to England and had two sons, Jim and Steve. In 1952 the family moved to Canada and settled in East Vancouver, while there they had four more sons; Robin, Ted, Terry and Dan. Jim was employed with Ault & Wiborg printing inks which later became BASF Inmont. He retired in 1987 as the western regional manager. In 1967 Jim and his family moved to White Rock. Jim’s retirement included; daily walks along the White Rock waterfront, fishing trips to Campbell River and many wonderful times with his six sons and their families. Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nellie and his six sons; Jim (Connie) from Campbell River, Steve (Jo-ann) from Sydney, Robin (Nardene) from Langley, Ted from Steveston, Terry (Bonnie) from Langley and Dan (Bonita) from Birch Bay. He will be missed by his grandchildren; Rob, Lee, Sadie, Michael, Ryan, Taryn, Camille, Jonathan, Krista, Jeff, Martell and Trevor and greatgrandchildren; Wyatt, RoddieLee, Hannah, Quade, Adam, Chantelle, Izzy and Gabi. In her mid twenties Peggy joined the RCAF, ``Women’s Division’’. She was stationed in Dauphin, Manitoba & Prince Rupert. In Rupert she met an American Lieutenant from Chicago. They married and lived in Winnipeg. Henry’s work took the family to Illinois, Texas, Utah and California. They returned to BC in 1984. Peggy always did the painting & decorating, shopping, cooking and provided a loving home. She was intelligent and witty, endowned with a Irish/Norweigian sense of humour and the gift of the gab. Peggy was a talented artist. She loved reading, literature, history and biographies. Sometimes reading a book a night till 2 or 3 in the morning. She loved animals all the cats in the neighbourhood. The birds by the feeder. Peggy was an amazing Mother, wife, grandmother with a compassionate gentle nature. We miss her more deeply than we can ever express but are forever grateful that she was in our lives. There will be a memorial in the Spring for friends & family.

❀NINA’S DAYCARE INC❀ LECHASSEUR, Myrtle, “Merle” Born January 3, 1915 in Killam, Alberta, passed away January 20, 2012 at Peace Arch hospital, White Rock, BC. Merle LeChasseur (nee Haggstrom) was a mother, sister, aunt, friend and NANA. She is survived by her daughter Lyla Strong, son Bert LeChasseur (Dianne) and sister Florence Noble of Vernon. She also leaves 2 step daughters, Doreen Miller (Gerry) and Marianne Moseley (Alan), and 16 Grandchildren and 20 Great grandchildren. During her long and amazing life, Merle was a wife, mother, an artist, an entrepreneur and in her later years a dog sitter. She loved all animals, but had a soft spot for the ones she cared for during her retirement years. All who knew her have a story to tell and that story is sure to be accompanied by plenty of laughter. As she often said, “I may not have had a perfect life, but I lived the life I had” From her days in the Cariboo, to her time in South America and then semi-retirement in Surrey, she always approached each move as a new adventure. Her final stop was in White Rock where she could be close to her daughter and a couple of amazing grandsons. The family would like to say a special “THANK YOU” to the staff at Evergreen Lodge who were so good to Merle in her last few months, and to Dr. Angus McDonald and staff at the Peace Arch hospital during her final hours. There will be no funeral by request. A memorial to celebrate Merle’s wonderful life and all the people she touched, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local SPCA. It was one of Merle’s favorite charities.
