Helping hands More are turning to the food bank to make ends meet
W
hile it may seem as though the festive season has just begun, the staff and volunteers at Peace Arch Community Services (PACS) White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank have been busy for weeks collecting donations of money and healthy food to ensure that everyone on the Peninsula has a very merry Christmas. This holiday season, PACS Food Bank manager Ruth Chitty anticipates an increase in the amount of people accessing the food bank and is hoping the community will step up to the plate once again to help out with the demand. "We are definitely busier this year, which is a trend happening all over the province," she said. According to the national Hunger Count survey by Food Banks Canada, nearly 95,000 ❝With minimum people in the wage, it's almost province used food banks in impossible – an to live in this March increase of community and five per cent meet dietary, from a year earlier. housing and And the other needs.❞ numbers are up even more Ruth Chitty in some parts PACS Food Bank of B.C. The Surrey Food Bank counted a 10 per cent increase this year after a 25 per cent jump in 2009 and now serves 250 to 300 a day. When it comes to the people who use the food bank, Chitty says there is a common misconception that those men and women are lazy and unwilling to work, which is far from reality. "There is a diversity of people of all ages who use to food bank who come from a diversity of situations," said Chitty. "Twenty per cent of our clients are working poor who cannot make enough because they are on minimum wage – the lowest wage in all of Canada. Many get contract work or have two jobs and still aren't able to make it. With minimum wage it's almost impossible to live in this

White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank provides recipients with enough food for two to three days per week; therefore, Chitty says it is doubly important that the food that gets distributed is wholesome and nutritious. "Oftentimes, people living on a
low income do not have access to enough nutritious food to meet their health needs, which puts their health at risk," said Chitty, noting the link between poor diet and illness is well-established. Christmas spirit abounds for 2010 W
hile the holidays are a busy time filled with decorating, baking, cleaning and shopping, they’re also a time for celebration. Luckily, each year there is no shortage of festive fun to be had on the Peninsula, and 2010 is no exception. Kids can have their pictures taken with the big man in red, and will also have a chance to meet firefighters and get an up-close look at the fire trucks. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids, and all the proceeds go towards the Peace Arch News Stocking Fund and the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.

Celebrate the memory of a loved one C
hristmas is a time filled with fond memories of friends and family, near and far, past and present. But for many, the festive time of year can a painful reminder that their loved one is no longer around. This holiday season, the White Rock Hospice Society invites anyone who has lost a loved one to pay tribute to their memory by visiting the Celebrate-A-Life booth at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre, which runs until Dec. 23. There, they’ll be able to write the person’s name on a paper dove to hang on the hospice tree. While there is no cost to remember a loved one, anyone who gives a donation to the nonprofit organization of $20 or more will receive a beautiful handcrafted, hand-painted dove by local artists to take home as a keepsake. For the past 22 years, White Rock Hospice has run the program during the holiday season as a way of raising funds as well as to show the community its appreciation for its ongoing support. “We are happy to provide this opportunity to the public every year as we are so grateful for the strong support we receive,” said Carol Whynott, a longtime White Rock Hospice volunteer who also co-ordinates Celebrate A Life. “It really seems to bring some type of closure… it’s a really nice way to honour who they have been and who they were in your life.” For two months prior to the launch of Celebrate A Life, a team of volunteers, including local resident Bob Wyborn, handcraft the doves. Local artists paint each one so that no two are

Bring on the holiday glitz and glamour Give your home a festive facelift without spending a small fortune on Christmas decor
W
ith the Christmas countdown upon us, now’s the time to get inspired to decorate. Adding a little holiday glitz and glamour to one’s home is a traditional and fun way to celebrate the holidays, and ideas are virtually endless. Fortunately, updating your holiday decor to compliment your own personal style and the latest trends in home holiday fashion doesn’t need to be a daunting task. Nor does it have to break the bank or compromise sentimentality, says Shawneen Esson, a designer and store merchandiser at Art Knapp Plantland in South Surrey. “There are plenty of ways to create that designer look – ways that don’t require spending a small fortune or a professional background in decorating,” said Esson. If you are going to make just one purchase this year to update your decor, Esson says a roll of mesh ribbon, which comes in a variety of colours at Art Knapps Plantland, will stretch your budget while adding that extra punch of colour. “Simply entwine with your tree’s

Another easy way to update your tree decor is to stuff the tree with silk flowers, branches, feathers and
berries, she notes. When it comes to colour trends, Esson always tells her customers to not be afraid to step outside the box and experiment with bold colours.
“Muted tones such as pewter, gold and chocolate brown complimented with dramatic accent colours like purples and pinks are really popular,” she says.

Festive season in full swing at local nurseries from page 7 “The most important thing is to pick a colour scheme that works with your surroundings and have fun with it.” The same rule applies to the colour of your tree. More and more people are experimenting with variations of the classic tree, says Esson. “There are a ton of artificial trees out there to choose from this year. From the retro silver tinsel trees or basic black or bright white. For a bachelorette pad, why not put up a funky hot pink tree?” Secondary trees are also popular, notes Esson, who suggests them for moms who want to have their designer tree, but also have a place to hang their children’s sentimental ornaments. “This way mom can have that nice designer tree and the kids can decorate their tree how they wish… it’s a great way to make everybody happy.” Another focal point for decorating is the fireplace mantel, which Esson says can be jazzed up in numerous ways. “We have such a huge selection of artificial garlands, which you can spruce up with festive candles, silk artificial flowers and sprigs of

Toys of yesteryear making wishlists
W
hile some may be tempted to leave their Christmas shopping to the last minute, retail procrastination isn’t recommended when it comes to purchasing toys for the kiddies. Every December, stores struggle to keep up with the high-demand for the year’s most popular toys, so it’s a good idea to hit the stores now, if you haven’t already. Remember the Elmo craze of 1996? Parents literally fought other parents in toy stores ❝In the last throughout couple of North American years, we've to purchase one really seen a of these most return to basic sought-after novelties for toys…❞ Christmas. For unique, Sandy Smith Cotton 'n' Crayon safe and environmentally friendly toys and high-quality, fun clothes, nothing beats Cotton ‘N’ Crayon Children’s Wear and Toys in Ocean Park for Christmas shopping. When it comes to popular toys and games for 2010, co-owner Sandy Smith says many of the bestsellers are reminiscent of yesteryear. “In the last couple of years, we’ve really seen a return to basic toys like wooden blocks, cars, puppets and puzzles – non-structured toys that encourage children to use their imagination by adapting and making their own designs.” For hours of fun – no batteries required – Cotton 'n' Crayon’s new Puppet Theater & Shop is must-have item for children over the age of three, said Smith. “This is a wonderful choice for Christmas as it is sure to inspire creativity in any child.” In the aftermath of the recession, many families have cut back on recreational activities – instead expensive outings have been replaced with ‘family game night.’ “We get a lot of parents and grandparents in here regularly looking for new games to play,” said Smith whose store carries

In Labyrinth Duel, Ravensburger’s latest game, two player are locked in a tense duel against each other simultaneously to find a quick way to the treasures. Each player shifts the 15 tiles on their own game board until they create a pathway between two treasures. The quicker of the two players wins the duel. This Labyrinth can also be played solo. In addition to his games, Ravensburger is also well known for his high-quality puzzles for all ages, which one can find a giant selection of on the shelves
at Cotton 'n' Crayon. Whether the image is a quaint scene from the sugar shack, a nostalgic merrygo-round, or a montage of your favourite country singers, jigsaw puzzles are simply good oldfashioned fun that bring everyone together. “Everyone knows of these puzzles because of the quality of the board and elaborate design in the puzzle,” said Sandy. “Customers of all ages, from eight to 100 are huge fans of theses.” An important factor that the

Famous reindeer returns Named in honour of the mostfamous reindeer of all (Rudolph, if you didn't know), Operation Red Nose is back, providing free rides to drivers and their passengers who, after going to a party, are impaired or too tired to drive home until Dec. 31. How does it work? All you have to do is call 1-877-604-NOSE and a team of three ORN volunteers will help you and your vehicle get home safely. One volunteer drives the client’s vehicle, a second volunteer navigates; a third volunteer follows in an escort vehicle to pick up the two volunteers once they drop off the client.
“It’s great to see that from one year to the next we continue to behave more responsibly with regards to impaired driving while enjoying the fun that comes with the holiday season,” said Jean-Marie De Konick, founding president of ORN. The organization’s partners include ICBC, CTV and the BC Liquor Distribution Branch. Last year, more than 50,900 volunteers provided 73,193 rides throughout Canada. This year, ORN needs your help again. To download a volunteer application form, visit www. operationrednose.com

Cathy Jesson of Black Bond Books checks out some of the latest bestsellers with store manager Stephanie Jane. Brian Giebelhaus photo
A special gift that keeps on giving
Treat the book-lover on your list to romance, mystery, heartwarming true tales
S
ometimes the best gifts can be found between the covers. From juicy page turners, heartwarming true tales, romances or graphic novels, there’s a great book out there for everyone on your Christmas shopping list, according to Cathy Jesson, owner of Black Bond Books in South Surrey. “A book is always appreciated as it’s something that a lot of thought goes into – it’s really one of those special gifts that just keeps on giving.” While it can certainly be overwhelming deciding on a book for a gift when you’re faced with shelves packed with bestsellers, staff picks and new books on the block, the staff at Black Bond have been trained to help you narrow down your search so you’ll never leave empty handed or overwhelmed. “If we just know the age of the person your are buying for and a little bit about them, usually our book lovers can find something to put in the customer’s hand,”
said Jesson. “We have some great suggestions for this Christmas and if it doesn’t work out, it’s always easy to exchange it for something else.” Gift cards are always a safe bet, she notes. “Ours come in any denomination and never expire.” When it comes to recommending the latest books, Jesson is quick to suggest Maeve Binchy’s latest, Minding Frankie, to her customers. The popular pick for mature female
readers is about unconventional families and relationships, which aren’t quite what they seem. “Our customers are saying this is one of her best, a real treat,” said Jesson. “It comes in a lovely oversized paperback at $24.95.” The Help by Kathryn Stockett is another book worth reading. With the civil rights movement exploding all around them, three women start a movement of their own, forever changing a town and
the way women – black and white, mothers and daughters – view one another. “This is a book club and staff favourite – a wonderful read and one to share,” said Jesson. For the history buff on your list, Ken Follett is back with another meaty start to a new trilogy. Fall of Giants,The first novel In The Century Trilogy, follows the fates of five interrelated familiesAmerican, German, Russian, English, and Welsh – as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution and the struggle for women’s suffrage. “Our readers give this historical epic two thumbs up,” said Jesson. Another top pick that Jesson suggests is the Pacific National Exhibition:100 Years Of Fun, a collectible pictorial filled with rare photos of great moments at the fair and the celebrities who visited the event. With more than 200 pages, this coffee table book will be

Oh Christmas tree
Here’s the deal on keeping it real through the holidays
C
hristmas trees strung with coloured lights and covered in ornaments and other trinkets are staples of the holiday season. Finding the perfect tree and decorating it is as much a Christmas tradition as egg nog and bad gifts from distant aunts and uncles. There is much debate over what tree is better – artificial or real – but the fact of the matter remains that an artificial tree will not provide the aroma or experience a real tree can offer. Over at Art Knapps PlantLand in South Surrey, one will find a wide selection of artificial trees inside the store, as well as a variety of fresh, real trees out back. Shawneen Esson, a designer and store merchandiser at the popular nursery and Christmas Brian Giebelhaus photo decor store provides the At Art Knapps PlantLand, Sheldon Danielson shows following pointers to keep a Fat Albert Colorado spruce tree that can be planted in mind when choosing the after it has been used as a Christmas tree. real deal.

• Invest in a really good stand. Not only will it last you for many years to come, but it will ensure you aren’t cheating on the water level and that your carefully decorated tree won’t tip over. Yikes! • Give your tree a fresh cut – about an inch to two off of the trunk to promote good water absorption. A cut tree can absorb as much as 1 gallon of water 24 hours after it is cut. After that the general rule is that a tree needs approximately one quart of water per inch of trunk diameter. • Invest in a high-quality tree like the Noble Fir (the Cadillac of Christmas trees) for a tree that lasts longer and retains its needles the best, even when they start to dry out. Another popular option is the Fat Albert Colorado spruce tree, which can be planted in your yard after it has been used as a Christmas tree. • Examine the tree you like carefully. A good one will
look healthy, be vibrant green and have a strong pine aroma. Look for a tree with strong branches to hold ornaments. The needles should be soft and flexible. They should not fall off easily if you run your hand over the branches. • Flock to it. Many nurseries, including Art Knapps PlantLand, offer custom flocking – a process made from cellulose, a derivative of wood, water, spray adhesive and in many cases a fire retardant – to make your tree look as though it were sitting out during a snowfall. Art Knapps charges between $7- $8 a foot. • Be sure to shake the tree out before you transport it home. This will loosen any dead branches and needles, which will make a mess of your car and home. By following these tips you can ensure you have a beautiful and healthy tree to enjoy for the duration of the season.

Affordable, thoughtful hostess gifts F
or many people, the weeks leading up to Christmas are busy ones, chock-full of shopping expeditions, festive home decorating and party hosting. Luckily, it’s also a time of year when the invitations to attend other people’s holiday gatherings start to roll in, providing a nice break from the season’s hectic pace and an opportunity to relax and catch up with friends and family. But attending a holiday party doesn’t offer a complete reprieve from holiday responsibilities – though it shouldn’t be expected by someone hosting a party, a small, thoughtful gift is a great way to show your appreciation for being included on their guest list. Give the ultimate gift of tranquility, relaxation
W
ith all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, give your loved one the ultimate gift of relaxation this Christmas by sending them to a local day spa. Whether it’s a luxurious fullday of pampering or an a la carte specialty service, a trip to the spa is certain to delight the special lady on your list. After all of the shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking and cleaning, what woman wouldn’t want to look down at pretty hands that don’t reveal the wear and tear of the season? Or perhaps, pretty, pampered toes to go with that elegant cocktail dress? Fortunately fellas, you don’t have to head to the big city to find what you’re looking for.
The White Rock and South Surrey area has no shortage of day spas to choose from – with each offering its own unique menu of services and specialty packages. When it comes to choosing the right spa gift, gift certificates deliver a high approval rating, unlike few other presents. At Shibui Skin Care on George Street, there are plenty of packages and spa services to choose from if you’re on the hunt for the perfect gift of relaxation. According to owner Amy Walmsley, a spa gift card – whether for a simple massage or all out luxury package – will be a sure hit under the Christmas tree. Perfect for the busy body on your list is the “Tranquility” package, which includes a full European facial and one-hour aromatherapy body massage. For the gift of a getaway without even leaving the Peninsula, Shibui offers an “Escape” package – a three-hour vacation European facial, a manicure and a pedicure. And for the ultimate gift to pamper any princess, the “Deserved Luxury” package is a four-hour treatment that includes a European facial, manicure, pedicure and onehour body massage. The indulgent, 90-minute treatment begins with a relaxing, warm eucalyptus steam, followed by Casbah’s signature inhalation ritual and a full body exfoliation with their nourishing Cinnamon Vanilla Spice Sugar and Jojoba Oil Scrub. After the massage comes a refreshing facial treatment and luxurious face and neck massage with warm towels, followed buy the application of a hydrating face cream and signature inhalation which finishes the treatment. Regularly priced at $119, this holiday package is on special for the month of December for just $99, and would make a great gift under the tree for someone in need of a little luxury and pampering. Also on special this month is the Holiday Glamour Facial at New Beauty Institute on Martin Drive. Described by owner Caree Walker as “75 minutes of sheer bliss,” this treatment includes a New Beauty Signature Facial, Laser Genesis treatment, Particle-Free Microderm Abrasion and neck and shoulder massage for only $99 (regular price is more than $299). Not only will this treatment leave you relaxed, refreshed and looking more youthful, but it also shrinks the pores and reduces appearances of fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re looking to take some of the magic of the spa home with you this holiday season, Walker is also selling the Clarisonic Pro, priced at $199.
This cleansing technology is widely used by leading dermatologists, spas and estheticians, and is now available for use at home, resulting in soft, healthy and radiant skin. The Clarisonic Pro is gentle enough for all skin types, waterproof, rechargeable and customizable, and is offered at New Beauty Institute with a twoyear warranty. While the majority of spa-goers is still women, more men are heading to the spa for services that include waxing, massage, manicures, pedicures and facials. If the special guy on your list has grown tired of getting socks and dress shirts, consider getting him a gift certificate to MenZone Hair Co. & Spa in South Surrey for a little well deserved pampering. A popular service is their traditional hot towel shave, which provides deep pore cleansing and an ultra close shave. So before you head to the shopping mall, aimlessly perusing the stores for the perfect present, consider the gift of tranquility and relaxation this holiday season with a trip to one of the Peninsula’s many local spas.

hile it’s always nice to receive a gift certificate, holiday knickknack or jewelry, sometimes the best Christmas gifts are those that come straight from the heart. And what better way to show your friends and family you care then by giving them a present made by yours truly. Not only will you save money, your loved ones will appreciate your thoughtfulness and creativity. For those who aren’t sure how or where to get started, look no further than the Peninsula. There are several local businesses in the White Rock and South Surrey area where one can find inspiration and guidance in making a one-ofa-kind Christmas gift, but Johnston Road seems to be where all the artistic action is going on. At Color Groove Ceramics on Johnston Road, owners Carol-Lynne Klyne and Jason Braun have been busy stocking the shelves with holiday stock fresh from the pottery wheel that is waiting to be painted, including festive ornaments, mugs, dishes, figurines and more. “There is something for everyone and every budget,” said Braun. ”We have ornaments you can hang on your tree and personalize like the typical Christmas balls, as well as some flat ornaments like Santas, reindeers and snowmen.”

Treat your party guests to little luxuries from page 39 to create a welcoming atmosphere in the dining and living area, Codesmith says to make sure you don’t neglect your powder room. With these added touches, they’ll feel like they are at a high class hotel: “Instead of using cloth guest towels, use ones made from paper,” suggests Briar. “It’s a renewable resource, plus, this way your guests won’t have to worry about germs.” Worried they won’t be put to good use? The trick, says Briar, is to have a nice waste paper basket and crumple one inside so your guests know they are allowed to use them to dry their hands. She also suggests lighting a soybased candle with essential oil to keep the bathroom nicely scented as well as using a high-quality pump soap, rather than a bar soap. “People don’t really like to use the same bar of soap. It’s the little things like this that count.” Another simple touch that can make a big difference is making some closet space for your guests. “Instead of bringing your guest’s coats to throw on your bed, clean out the front closet and use lots of
More holiday host tips… • Plan early and plan often. There's nothing more frustrating than finding out that your intended party guests have other plans. • Design a realistic menu. If you plan on enjoying your own party, it pays to have a menu that includes a number of items that can be made ahead of time and then heated or plated just before your guests arrive. • Keep kids happy. When planning a gathering for guests of all ages, it's helpful to have activities on hand for the younger crowd. Set aside a space for kids and set out a variety of toys and games that will keep them occupied and engaged.

rum on the side for guests who want a little something extra. (For festive merry mocktail recipes, see page 17). And lastly, end on a positive note. Your responsibilities as a host don’t end when your guests say good night. ith all the holiday hoopla and commercialism, it can be easy to forget the true spirit of Christmas. Donating is a popular way to show appreciation during the holiday season, but not every household has the funds to donate this year. In lieu of making a financial donation, a gift of time and service is just as valuable. Research indicates that 50 per cent of charitable donations are made between Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the season of hospitality and togetherness, making charitable donations is ever-present in many people’s minds. However, financial insecurity due to the sluggish job market and economy will likely result in more people hoping to volunteer their time instead of their finances this holiday season. Volunteering one’s time is a way to give back without expending funds. Just as charities and other organizations are in need of money to operate their causes, they also need manpower to put

re you dreaming of a holiday spent in the sun and sand with a lime margarita in hand instead of a rum and eggnog this Christmas? Or maybe a family trip to the Big Apple to watch the giant tree at Rockefeller Centre light up the city skyline? Perhaps a trip to London to see the sights of London is more of your cup of tea? While it may be cutting it close for a tropical or big city Christmas, now is the perfect time to plan a getaway for your loved one to look forward to in the new year. Imagine their surprise as they discover a envelope under the tree on Christmas morning containing a pre-planned travel itinerary to a location they’ve always dreamed about? Giving a getaway holiday can be a wonderful gift, but it takes a lot of diligent planning, says Elaine Ross, owner of Uniglobe Travelex in White Rock. Having access to your gift recipient’s personal information ahead of time can speed up the process and avoid any disappointment. “You’ll need to have the name of the person you are booking it for (exactly as it appears on their passport), their date of birth, passport number and passport expiry date,” she said.
“We’ll also have to make sure they have at least six months left on their passport to avoid any disappointment.” Often times when people come in to give a travel gift, staff at Uniglobe Travelex recommend gift certificates. “We get a lot of people at the last minute at Christmas who don’t know what to buy and we do up a gift certificate for them,” said Ross. “That way the person they are buying for can put it towards whatever they want to do and plan for whenever they are able to go.” To personalize the gift, Ross suggests wrapping up the gift certificate with luggage tags, inside a suitcase or with a brochure on a specific travel destination. “You can really get creative and have a lot of fun with it for a real memorable gift,” she said. Over at White Rock Travel, owner Ginny Harrison, has her finger on the pulse of the latest travel deals, which are sure to make great gifts. Now is the time to book your family on a Caribbean cruise for spring break, she says. "Princess Cruises has a great 10-day Caribbean cruise leaving Mar 18, with great deals available." The 10-day cruise with balcony cabin is approximately $1,600, plus tax and airfare.
