South Surrey man suffers injuries to neck, arms and ribs

In-line skater gets wedged under bus Hannah Sutherland Staff Reporter

An in-line skater receives care after he slammed under a shuttle while travelling with friend Jesse Floro (background) on Johnston Road Monday.

A 23-year-old in-line skater became wedged under a bus in White Rock Monday afternoon. According to friend Jesse Floro, who was skating with the victim, the two were heading south down Johnston Road around 4:30 p.m. when a car began backing out of a parking space in front of the Salvation Army, 1327 Johnston Rd. Floro said he swerved to avoid the car and, when he looked back, he saw his friend on the ground, beneath a bus. Floro said bystanders told him afterwards that the northbound community shuttle had come to a stop and the in-line skater went “plowing” into it. A crowd of onlookers gathered as emergency crews tended to the victim, who was responsive and complaining of pain in his arm. After being removed from underneath the bus, the injured man was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance. White Rock RCMP Sgt. Paul Fletcher said the next day that the victim was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for injuries to his neck, arms and ribs. Floro said he and his friend – who live together in South Surrey – in-line skate down the same route everyday, and have never had problems with cars before. He said neither had been wearing helmets.

Destruction of car by police criticized as ‘grossly negligent’

Berner’s lawyer asks court to drop all charges Tracy Holmes & Kristine Salzmann Staff Reporter / Black Press

The lawyer for accused impaired driver Carol Berner argued Tuesday for charges against his client to be dropped. Jason Tarnow told Judge Peder Gulbransen he wants a stay of proceedings on the basis defence had no opportunity to examine the car Berner was driving when she struck and killed fouryear-old Alexa Middelaer May

17, 2008. As well, he and cocounsel David Tarnow had no opportunity to cross-examine a key witness, Delta Const. Shane Parker, the collision analyst who reported on the crash findings, he said. Parker is medically unavailable to testify, however the Crown had his findings analyzed by an expert. If defence is successful in the application, the case, which is being heard in Surrey Provincial

Court, is over. (A decision was not made by Peace Arch News deadline Tuesday afternoon.) A stay is “a drastic remedy,” prosecutor Winston Sayson told Peace Arch News Monday. “The law provides that a judicial stay of proceedings can only be granted in the ‘clearest of cases’ because this is basically a final determination,” he said. Last weekend’s Ocean Park Day was the most successful in the event’s 10-year history, despite a power outage that resulted after a bird hit a transformer. “We had a generator for the stage, so the music kept going,” said Laura Thibeault, past-president of the Ocean Park Business Association. “It was still a huge success.” Although some cash registers were down for a couple hours during the outage, Thibeault said businesses – which offered special promotions for the June 19 festival – experienced an increase in shoppers. “Sales were still way up.” The day of festivities was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. around 16 Avenue and 128 Street, and included a Kiwanis Club barbecue, live music, clowns, stilt walkers and a 24-foot climbing wall. Toy store Cotton ‘N’ Crayon celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special play day for kids, while Starbucks raised money with a dunk tank. Other fundraisers also proved successful, including a draw that collected close to $1,000 and raffle tickets sold by Southridge students, who raised $750. Funds from both efforts will go towards next year’s event. “There was all kinds of involvement,” Thibeault said. “Every year it gets bigger and better.”

news Staffing expenses amount to $122 million

City of Surrey spent $518 million in 2009 Kevin Diakiw Black Press

It cost more than half a billion dollars to run the city last year, according to financial figures released Monday. The city’s 2009 statement of financial information details how much money was received and how it was spent. The city spent $518 million last year, and of that $396.6 million went to suppliers, $122 million to staff salaries and $680,000 to city council. Some of the largest expenses were for the Receiver General of Canada ($78 million), Greater Vancouver Water District ($33 million), Greater Vancouver Sewerage and

Drainage ($31.5 million), Municipal Pension Plan ($10.8 million), Pedre Contractors ($7.5 million), BC Hydro ($6.4 million) and B&B Contracting ($6.3 million). Surrey’s garbage collectors, IPI, received $10.8 million last year. City manager Murray Dinwoodie remains the top earner with the city, bringing in $265,962. Vivienne Wilke, general manager of finance, earned $189,195, followed by general manager of parks, recreation and culture Laurie Cavan ($183,693), fire Chief Len Garis ($172,813), city solicitor Craig MacFarlane ($164,865), general manager of human resources Nicola Webb ($164,812), general

manager of operations Gerry McKinnon ($139,360), manager of information technology Geoff Samson ($138,371), manager of parks Owen Croy ($137,596) and Nick Marach, manager of Surrey’s building division ($136,388). The cost of running the city last year was $11 million more than in 2008. The garbage contract alone was $3 million more.

Council costs up Surrey taxpayers shelled out a bit more last year for their city council due to a combination of increased wages and higher expenses. Financial figures released this week show it cost $679,923 for

Dianne Watts has been nominated as the world’s best mayor. Watts is one of 24 mayors vying for the title of World Mayor 2010. The other North American mayors include Dave Bronconnier (Calgary), Cory Booker (Newark) and Mick Cornett (Oklahoma City). Watts’ nomination says that as the first female mayor of Surrey, she has created innovative investment plans, a crime reduction strategy and an aggressive city infrastructure investment. Her nomination quotes Watts: “Great cities are always a work in progress Dianne Watts nominee and require a commitment from every citizen. I am optimistic about our future and l really do believe that if there is a city and a province capable of weathering the storm and coming out even stronger when it passes, it is Surrey and British Columbia.” World Mayor, established in 2003, is an award put forward by an organization called City Mayors, an international think tank for urban affairs, consisting of professionals to promote good local government. Conquer Cancer trek to Seattle raises $9.2 million

Crescent Beach cyclists add $109,000 to haul Nick Greenizan Staff Reporter

When the Crescent Beach Riders – all 17 of them – finally crossed the finish line Sunday in Seattle, with teammate and cancer survivor Gil Dyck leading the way, that’s when the tears came. The group had just concluded the Ride to Conquer Cancer – a twoday, 200-km trek from Surrey to Seattle – and seeing Dyck, a Crescent Beach doctor, greeted by his wife, Marion, and daughter, Kristin, was an emotional moment. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” said Crescent Beach Riders teammate Ralph White. “It was pretty special.”

Dyck was one of two cancer survivors on the team – Chris Poole was the other – and the pair led the group to the end, after the team convened 14 km from the finish line and rode in together. “It was very nice to have the whole team together like that, and that’s really part of the fun – the camaraderie,” said Dyck, who also did the ride last year, before being diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The teamwork paid off on the fundraising end of things, too; the Crescent Beach Riders were among the top fundraising teams, collecting $109,000. One member, Roger Walsh, collecting $49,937 on his own – the fourth highest indi-

vidual total in the province. In total, 2,252 participants from across the province took part, raising $9.2 million for the BC Cancer Foundation – the most successful fundraising event in the foundation’s history. To ride the event, each participant had to raise at least $2,500. Members held fundraising dinners and other events to reach the target number, and Dyck said his drive was boosted by an anonymous $10,000 donation. “We were pretty blown away, pretty impressed,” said Dyck. The group of friends banded together, White said, to support Dyck, who was diagnosed in

For his part, Dyck insists he can’t yet be called a survivor – he underwent stem-cell treatment just fiveand-a-half weeks ago – although he said he is doing well, and is confident he’ll beat it. “With something like multiple myeloma, you’re never really cured – it’s always there, threatening to come back,” he said. “But it’s been going really well, thanks to all the modern medicine we have now.” The fundraising total of $109,000 is still growing, White said, and donations can be made for two months following the ride. Kwomais Lodge and Sandford Hall reopen

Buildings back in business Kwomais Lodge and Sanford Hall have officially re-opened, following a free celebration that drew 600 people to Kwomais Point Park for live music, face painting and community displays last weekend. Both Sanford Hall – which has an occupancy rate of 150 individuals – and Kwomais Lodge – which can accommodate 50 – were renovated to include kitchen and washroom facilities. The buildings will host a variety of Surrey Parks, Recreation and Culture programs that will focus on health and wellness, outdoor

“Look for more upgrades in the near future like a new parking lot, improvements to Marine Drive, a new plaza featuring mosaic tile art, new forest trails, a labyrinth and the Semiahmoo lookout, so visitors can watch the whales, wildlife or the magnificent sunsets,” Watts said in a release. The City of Surrey purchased Kwomais Point Park three years ago, and council has since given it formal ‘park’ dedication, which ensures the area is preserved as parkland and allows the operation of Sanford Hall Kwomais Lodge for public leisure.

Peace Arch News congratulates the organizers of Ocean Park Days This year’s Ocean Park Day saw the most attendees in the 11 years the event has taken place, with many people coming from all over the Lower Mainland to take part in the fun.

Police image tarnished ustice Thomas Braidwood’s final report into the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski is out – and it doesn’t mince words. Calling the conduct of the four Richmond RCMP officers involved in the tasering death at Vancouver airport “shameful,” Braidwood stopped just short of recommending criminal charges against them. A special prosecutor appointed by Attorney General Mike de Jong might not be so inclined to stop short, and will review the possibility of charges that would make an example of the officers who have so shaken confidence in our national police force. About the only culpability Braidwood didn’t assign to the four was in finding there was no evidence they colluded to fabricate their story of what happened. But an amateur video of the tragedy gave the lie to their testimony – and, in so doing, made many of us question the reliability of police testimony in other cases. While Braidwood said the actions of the four shouldn’t reflect on thousands of RCMP and other officers who have diligently served the public for generations, there is really no way they can’t taint our view of police forces. The RCMP may have made changes to policy, but that won’t easily dispel an impression of heavyhandedness and a panicky over-reliance on weaponry to subdue a distraught man. The Braidwood report doesn’t point a finger only at the officers. He questions – with every justification – how Canada’s Border Services Agency could “lose” an immigrant, leaving him to wander alone for five hours in the airport customs hall, after an already stressful 20-hour flight. Anyone who has ever endured a long flight or who has been frustrated at being unable to express oneself in a foreign language can begin to imagine how such an ordeal might have caused Dziekanski to “lose it.” However agitated he had become, did this man deserve to lose his life? While our legal system may give scant recognition to the concept of “excited delirium,” it is a syndrome likely to reappear as the pressure cooker of modern life causes others to snap. Will others in authority recognize the signs? Will they respond appropriately? The Braidwood report may soon become an unpleasant memory, and we may rationalize our way to a viewpoint that such a tragedy can’t happen again. But one chilling fact remains. Flaws in Canada’s system didn’t just fail Robert Dziekanski. They killed him.

In an interview, Walker used the example of a girl in Grade 1 who needed help with a prosthetic limb so she could participate in class. The teacher refused. The union and district went through the usual protracted wrangle over contract language, and the teacher was finally ordered to do her job. So she snapped on rubber gloves in front of the humiliated kid, apparently concerned that amputation might be contagious. The district, no doubt weary of these kinds of fights, gave up and transferred the teacher to another school. Thus the teacher escaped discipline at the district level, and under the letter of the law could not be evaluated for professionalism by the college. The girl’s mother, not wanting to just pass the problem along, made a direct complaint to the college. There have been 270 of these direct complaints since the college created the option in 2003. Not one has been upheld, and Walker says that is because the union blocks discipline whenever it can. The Vancouver school board has been told to fix its budget by the end of June or be removed from office. A former deputy minister will report on the state of the teachers’ college this fall. Stay tuned. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

When is it going to end? An open letter to Minister of Health Kevin Falcon. Re: Patients need quality control, June 11 letters & Quality health care possible, June 16 letters. What has gone so terribly wrong at our Peace Arch Hospital? I have observed both my mother’s and husband’s good and timely treatment in years past, as well as my own two surgeries in 2003 and 2004. However, it was a different story this year upon driving my friend to emergency May 12 and again June 10. Even though they didn’t seem obviously busy – according to all the chit chat – one could feel the lack of attention by most on duty. My friend was admitted on May 12 and stayed overnight in a drafty ER hallway; she was released the next day. On June 12, she was lucky to get a cubical. They wheeled her to the X-ray department, and after waiting – without any lunch – until almost 3 p.m., she decided she’d go home, as the respiratory therapist never arrived. After the June 11 Peace Arch News letter about quality control for the senior in his 80s, I almost wrote in. However, after reading the June 16 open letter to Health Minister Kevin Falcon, I was appalled at letter-writer Michelle Voros’s treatment after surgery. When is it going to end? We need more funding and better hospital administration, it seems, to reverse and improve our hospital care. M. Driediger, Surrey

White Rock who are frustrated in seeing all the retail and services going across North Bluff Road to the Surrey side, obviously losing revenue for White Rock which is so badly needed. If the solution is to be incorporated into Surrey, then I am not opposed. D. Barros, White Rock

Statements of entitlement Editor: Upon retirement after 52 years in the hotel, airline and restaurant industry, I accepted a request by CESO (Canadian Executive Service Organization) to provide volunteer -consulting services. For years my wife and I spent time on Antigua, the Philippines and Romania. Our duties included teaching small operators of hotels and restaurants how to run their operations efficiently.

Obviously these assignments involved lengthy traveling times and CESO only allowed economy-class travel, and most trips had to be without interruption, i.e.hotel stays to rest while en route. To read South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale MP Russ Hiebert’s statements of entitlement makes me wonder whether he should consider a different career or move his family to Ottawa. Since he is mostly too busy to face his constituents, they could stay informed by his printed material. Claus Ritter, White Rock Q During the last federal election campaign, MP Russ Hiebert absolutely refused to support legislation which would assist children with autism obtain necessary health care, telling their parents, “I don’t want to be the poster boy for autism.” How about poster boy for entitlement and government waste? What a legacy! M.L. Pfortmueller, Surrey

Ridiculously complicated Editor: I received my annual income-tax notice, accompanied by a “simple to use” book. For starters, the tax breaks to lowincome people are cheap political ploys to win a vote – two-bit breaks to assuage the naive for the benefit of the rich. It complicates the tax return to the point of ridicule. The big tax company wants $70 for 10 minutes work. That works out to $420 per hour. So I went to a titan of a tax guru. With his help, and some perseverance on my part, the CRA changed their $900 demand from me to a refund of $479. If I hadn’t squawked, I would have been out by almost $1,400. I’m a mere 64, but I wonder how many others my age and older are being ripped off by the government. R.K. Grace, Surrey

Learning to say they’re Surrey Editor: Re: Content in South Surrey, June 16 letters. I am writing in reply to Bob Cooper’s rebuttal of my original letter (Nothing ever stays the same, May 26). First of all, I wrote this article rather tongue-in-cheek. It was not meant to display any elitist attitude on my part or to be smug. Also, I am certainly not naive enough to think people from South Surrey would like to live in White Rock. I was just stating that a lot of people from South Surrey say they are from White Rock. For example, a few weeks ago we crossed the border and, as usual, the officer asked us where we lived and we replied “White Rock,” to which he said, “really, everyone says they are from White Rock.” If people from South Surrey are so happy there, why do many of them say they live in White Rock? I am not excited about the fact I have to pay higher taxes in this area. I do not walk the promenade and prefer to take my dog to one of the many lovely parks that are in South Surrey and Crescent Beach, and I do most of my shopping in South Surrey, as well. I guess I speak for others from

Pay-in-advance parking – like that on White Rock Beach – lets cities rob users through fines, writes Todd Wilkes.

Canadian solution takes its toll Editor: I spent the last 15 years since graduating from UVic traveling the world. Being away from my home in White Rock has not always been easy but I have seen and learned many things. I would like to comment on the paid parking on White Rock beach and similar systems in Canada of charging for parking. Nowhere else in the world have I seen parking meters like we have, where you pay first and then get fined if you are late coming back to your car. Not only is this a terrible system, but it only helps the city rob citizens through fines. In most countries, parking is paid when you leave. You can come back to your car whenever you like and there are no fines or city workers waiting by your car for the meter to hit zero so they can charge you 100 per cent more than the parking costs. This is, in basic terms, a scam justified through revenue collection. We, in Canada, pay huge taxes – some of the highest in the world – and yet we are subject to fines and hassles everywhere we go.

Not only is the parking system undemocratic, it is terrible for businesses at the beach. When I come home, I rarely go to the beach, shopping or eating, because I don’t want to have to pay a ridiculous amount for parking and then sit worrying about when my meter will run out. This is a symptom of the problems in Canada and White Rock. There are fair and much easier ways to create revenue through parking. Years ago, I watched a meter checker stand by my car staring at the meter with pen in hand. As soon as it hit zero, I walked over and he had already started writing the ticket. I actually took him to court and the judge ruled for me. So my message to residents is to realize there are better ways than the Canadian way sometimes. Parking is the beginning of the fight against unfair taxes and government interference in society. I advise residents of South Surrey and White Rock to think about supporting a mayor and city council who look out for the needs of residents and not only for money. Todd Wilkes, Surrey

Scrapping more waste “Hi Marge... I just heard, Kevin Diakiw Black Press

Soon, Surrey residents will be scraping their plates into a separate waste bin, which will be hauled to a local composting facility. In fact, this fall the city will launch a pilot project collecting organic waste every week and regular garbage only every two. Those organics represent about 65 per cent of the area’s garbage and currently go to the landfill. As such, regular garbage pickups shouldn’t be required as often. Surrey is currently holding public meetings on how waste diversion will take place. This evening (Wednesday), an information booths will be set up at South Surrey Recreation Centre. Rob Costanzo, the manager spearheading the change, went to what he thought would be a lightly attended meeting earlier this month. Because of a communication mixup, the meeting was held outside the doorway to a room at the North

Surrey Recreation Centre. Costanzo said it was perfect. About three people came for the meeting, and another 117 came to see what the fuss was about. From now on, Costanzo said, the meetings will be held in public areas. He notes that the public has become insistent that correct environmental measures are put in place. For each idea he floats at a meeting, he has residents asking him “why don’t you do this, too?” One of the things people want is organic composting in each backyard. Costanzo said meats or foods cooked with oil won’t compost properly in a backyard and would attract rodents. The region has yet to build a composting facility for the city, and Costanzo wouldn’t say exactly where it would be located. The city is asking people to get involved by attending the meetings and filling out a questionnaire at tinyurl.com/2wtldns

Taser death ‘shameful’ a 20-hour flight from Poland, before growing distraught. Soon after arriving, the four Richmond Mounties began tasering Dziekanski, testifying during the inquiry they believed he posed a threat because he was combative and armed with a stapler. Braidwood rejected their claims he was poised to attack, declaring them “patently unbelievable afterthe-fact rationalizations” and other statements they wrestled him to the ground “deliberate misrepresentations.” Officers weren’t justified in tasering Dziekanski the first time, Braidwood found, nor for subsequent jolts. Braidwood found the five Taser deployments played “a prominent role” in his death by cardiac arrest, coupled with the physical struggle with the officers and his already stressed, agitated state. Dziekanski died within two minutes of the final tasering. “Despite their training, the officers see page 10

The Braidwood Inquiry has ruled RCMP officers were not justified in rapidly and repeatedly tasering Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski, finding their response a leading cause of his death at Vancouver Airport in 2007. Justice Thomas Braidwood, who released his report Friday after a two-year inquiry, did not explicitly make findings of misconduct against the four officers, but heaped criticism on them and others who could have prevented the tragedy. He called it a story of “shameful conduct by a few officers” that should not reflect badly on the RCMP or police as a whole. Police had been summoned to the international arrivals area Oct. 14, 2007 in response to reports a drunk man was throwing furniture around. Dziekanski, 40, had failed to connect with his mother and roamed the international arrivals area for more than five hours unaided, after

No advance plan to use taser: report SALE from page 9 approached the incident as if responding to a barroom brawl and failed to shift gears when they found they were dealing with an obviously distraught traveller, Braidwood said. “Mr. Dziekanski in no way brought this on himself. Braidwood also found the officers did not make any advance plan to use the Taser and that in the initial moments of contact made “well-intentioned attempts to communicate. Conflicting orders issued by the senior officer, Cpl. Monty Robinson, confused Dziekanski, who then raised his arms. While officers later met and discussed the incident prior to being interviewed by IHIT investigators, Braidwood found they did not collude to fabricate a consistent story. The commissioner would not answer when asked if prosecutors should reconsider charging the officers involved. Asked why he did not make findings of misconduct, he said: “I think I was blunt enough... those reading it can draw their own conclusions.

Robert Dziekanski died after being tasered repeatedly. The inquiry found the police response was just one of many missed opportunities to avoid the tragedy. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) failed to ensure Dziekanski, after clearing an initial customs line, made it out to the public waiting area. “I was frankly appalled that a passenger could disappear within the CBSA secure customs hall for more than five hours, Braidwood said, adding that “regrettably the agency has made no significant policy or procedure changes since the death. Dziekanski’s mother, Zofia

Cisowski, also spoke out Friday. “I will always be thinking of my son and the manner of his death, she said. “But I am satisfied that the Braidwood Commission conducted a full review of what happened to my son. The RCMP had reached an out-of-court settlement with Cisowski, the terms of which have not been disclosed.

Criminal charges against the RCMP officers involved in the death of Dziekanski will be reconsidered, Attorney General Mike de Jong said Friday. He said a special prosecutor will be given “wideranging authority to make recommendations to the Crown. Crown prosecutors had previously decided against charging the officers. “It is not just warranted but essential that a reconsideration of that decision take place, de Jong said. De Jong said B.C. within a year will create a civilian-led body to investigate all municipal police and RCMP-related deaths and serious incidents.

hose who know Roy Strang won’t be surprised by the retired forester’s recent admission: “I like to sound off.” And while convincing Peninsula residents they have heard the last of Strang may be a tough sell, the vocal environmentalist who writes weekly for the Peace Arch News is firm when he says it is time to put down his pen. His final Enviro Notes column is to appear in these pages Friday (June 25). Strang has written for PAN since 2006. He followed in the footsteps of Maureen Korman, whose Greenspace column graced the paper’s pages for a number of years before she took ill and died in March 2006. Strang said he always found Korman’s columns “very interesting” and decided to take a crack at putting his own voice to environmental issues. People need to be more aware of such issues, and of the fact individuals can make a difference even to seemingly insurmountable challenges, he said. “Everybody talks about it, but you’ve got to be doing more... leaning harder on our politicians, which is what individuals can do.

He has been recognized as a Surrey Citizen of the Year, received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in 2002 and was presented the Order of White Rock in 2008. And he doesn’t turn off his environmental side at home, either. In addition to fighting Alison to turn off lights and turn down the heat, Strang leaves the car at home when he can and prefers to buy local produce in-season. “I’m damned if I’m going to buy California strawberries in February,” he said. As for his opinions, Strang has no qualms about stating them and isn’t put out when people disagree. The goal is simply to get people talking. “Some people have disagreed with me and that’s fine. Nobody’s really found fault with anything I’ve said,” he said. “I really wanted to get people thinking, talking, and then acting, doing.” He’s confident he’s achieved at least part of his goal. The rest is out of his hands. “I’ve got people talking. They’re more aware now than if I hadn’t been writing. What they’re doing with that awareness, I’m not sure.”

The number of articles reporting shootings, grow-ops and meth labs, arrests of people who would not fit the stereotype for drug trafficking and cross boarder smuggling have seemed to be on the rise of late. When the Surrey Board of Trade hosted community forums focusing on Crime Reduction, the clear message was that substance use is the primary driving force of such social concerns. How do we understand this force and how to address it as a community to minimize its harmful impact? The way we view substance use, misuse, addiction, its causes and consequences lead to our ideas about how to intervene.

An enlightened RCMP officer from Richmond once described his evolving perspective during his time in working in the drug enforcement division: “At first I thought we have to take those lazy, morally corrupt addicts off the streets. Then when I saw that the people who were addicted were genuinely suffering and had never intended on becoming addicted, plus the fact that many people with problems are not on the streets but have homes, jobs and families, I thought, we have to get those vultures, the dealers who prey on the vulnerable. Then when I saw how the lure of the money especially for kids who have not been embraced in some meaningful way by our society, I could see that as long as demand for drugs remains strong, there will be a new dealer to replace the one I helped put away. And then I saw all of the problems related to alcohol including domestic violence and dangerous driving and I thought wow, how did we become such a substance using culture? How do we prevent these problems in the first place?” Most people are impacted by addiction in some way at some point in their lives whether it is one’s own struggle or a loved one or being the victim of crime, substance misuse is a community concern.

Now all eyes and ears are on the Boardwalk Let us introduce you to a new concept in hearing aids:

In our Addiction Services program at Sources, we average almost 20 new clients for counselling every month, plus the family members who come to our Affected Others Group, and most are successful in creating change in their lives. However, treatment is usually accessed after years of pain and struggle and is akin to pulling people out of the river versus finding where they are falling in. Our program provides presentations to most secondary students in the 10th Grade to raise awareness and encourage healthy choices. However, research shows that it is only when we can create a culture of prevention, when we do not think of addiction as only striking “those people”, when we see that it really is “our people”, that we can truly prevent, delay or reduce problems related to substances.

Players Club The White Rock Players Club’s production of The Stepmother continues until June 26 at Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd. The 1920s-era show helps correct a historical wrong by presenting a proto-feminist play that has only recently been restored to public view after being lost for more than 80 years. The drama, written by playwright Githa Sowerby (Rutherford and Son) received only one production by a private theatre club in London in 1924. But it was considered a lost work until a copy was found in the archives of theatre publisher Samuel French. A powerful, intense drama about a woman working hard to raise two stepdaughters, in spite of the unreliability and scheming ways of her husband, the piece finally received a belated professional debut at last year’s Shaw Festival, winning recognition as both a period piece and a feminist statement far ahead of its time. The play features Chloe Traynor as Lois, the title character and Players Club past president Fred Partridge as her ne’er-do-well spouse. Evening performances are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Sunday, June 20. Tickets ($16, $14 seniors) are available from wrpctix@uniserve. com or the theatre boxoffice, at 604-536-7535.

All are welcome and admission is $5.

One of Earl Marriott Secondary theatre program’s most successful alumni, Jessie award-winner Dean Paul Gibson, returns to Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach festival this year in a dual role – director of the main stage production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, which runs to Sept. 25, and as the title character in Falstaff (running July 1 to Sept. 22). The gorgeously-costumed Much Ado About Nothing has been set by Gibson in an appropriate period, the Edwardian era just before the Great War.In contrast, Falstaff, directed by Glynis Leyshon, is set in late medieval period. One of theatre’s most beloved characters, Falstaff was certainly a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who commissioned The Merry Wives of Windsor specifically because she wanted to see “Sir John in love.” For tickets, call 604-739-0559 or 1-877-739-0559.

Lance Ryan The term “shop early for Christmas” definitely applies for tickets to this year’s Christmas with Lance Ryan, which are on sale now, even though the concert isn’t scheduled until Dec. 15 (7:30 p.m.) at the First United Church. The concert, a benefit for the Peninsula Arts Foundation, is a rare and unique opportunity to see the internationally-acclaimed White Rock-raised opera star in his hometown – otherwise fans of the tenor would have to travel to Europe where his management have him booked in back to back productions for such prestige venues as the Bayreuth Festival, where he will headline both Wagner’s Siegfried and Gotterdammerung in July and August (other dates this year include performances in Russia and Shanghai, China). The upcoming local concert will present Ryan and his wife, Italian soprana Viviana Passalacqua, with accompanist David Boothroyd, the Semiahmoo Strings youth orchestra and pianist Kay Hung. New coach adds pair of players to Eagles’ nest Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

Matt Mazzarolo new defenceman

Though he’s been on the job just a few weeks, new Surrey Eagles coach Matt Erhart has been quick to begin molding the team’s roster to his liking for the coming season. Last week, the new bench boss – who replaced outgoing coach Shane Kuss on June 1 – acquired two players with B.C. Hockey League experience, 17-year-old sophomore forward Brodie Jamieson and 20-year-old defenceman Matt Mazzarolo, a Surrey native who

played last year with the Merritt Centennials. Erhart picked up Jamieson, who will be 18 when the season starts, from the Coquitlam Express in exchange for 20-year-old forward Jason Grecica. “I know Coquitlam really wanted Grecica, and I’ve really liked Brodie as a player for a couple years now, so it’s a case of both teams getting something they want,” Erhart said. Jamieson, a five-foot-nine North Vancouver native, had five goals and nine assists in 57 games last year with

the Express, and was named the team’s top rookie. “Brodie is a real speedy guy, and plays a pretty tenacious game, even though he’s not the biggest guy. Last year, being a rookie, he didn’t get a lot of specialteams minutes and was used mostly in a checking role, but we’re looking for him to open it up a little bit this year. “He has a lot of upside.” The team’s vacant 20-year-old player roster spot didn’t stay open long, as Erhart then pulled the trigger on the second deal to bring Mazzarolo into

the fold, in exchange for future considerations. He’ll be counted on to bring some size and grit to the blue-line. Last year with the Cents, the six-footthree, 200-pound rearguard notched 17 points and 105 penalty minutes in 58 games. “Matt’s a real character guy, and he’ll stick up for his teammates and provide a lot of leadership... he’s not a real offensive guy, but he makes a good pass,” Erhart said. “And it’s nice, too, that he’s a local guy.”

he sign placed in the pro shop at Peace Portal Golf Course was a polite one, kindly asking Monday golfers to allow John Burns and Jodi Reimer to play-through. And to get a sense of just how fast the duo was moving through the 18 scenic holes near the Canada/U.S. border, one only need to ask the very golfers who were moving aside to let them by. “They’re really moving, man… way too fast for me.” “They’re up there, ahead on the green… or at least they were. Looks like they’re gone already.” “It’s crazy. I mean, could you do 100 holes in a day?” On the surface, it does seem slightly crazy, the idea of playing 100 holes of golf in a single day, but that was exactly what Burns, a pastor at Relate Church, in Surrey, and Reimer, a golf pro at Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby, were attempting Monday, on the longest day of the year.

Last year, Burns – who can finish a round on his own in about two hours – accomplished the 100-hole feat alone, but this year he brought Reimer, a member of Burns’ church, along for the ride. The duo were raising money for Mercy Ministries, with the goal set at $50,000. Last year, Burns raised $35,000. The pair teed off at 4:30 a.m., and managed to sneak in a full round – at nearly a full sprint – before many other golfers hit the 6,103-yard course. By 9:45 a.m., they were just finishing up their fourth round, with entourage in tow. A few helpers – providing water and PowerBars – were traipsing along the hilly Peace Portal layout with Burns and Reimer, as was an official scorekeeper, and a gaggle of photographers and videographers. In order to save time and energy, the pair – who were carrying their own bags and not using carts – were not taking many, if any, practice swings,

often teed off at the same time – etiquette be damned – and never spent too much time admiring, or admonishing, their shots. Instead, they went with something of a “run, swing, run again” approach. They weren’t talking much either, save for a little friendly trash talk or few words of encouragement, and a quick word to onlookers as they zipped past. “Great day for 100 holes of golf – perfect weather,” Burns said of the slightly overcast skies, after teeing off on the 17th hole for the fourth time that morning. “But this hole has already taken three of my balls… this one gets me every time.” The twosome wrapped up their 100-hole golf-a-thon – about 5½ rounds – by midafternoon Monday. Two more forfeit losses last weekend – bringing the number of forfeits this season to four – have left White Rock Tritons head coach Brent Swanson simply shaking his head. He’s tried being understanding – the first two losses were a result of the team having too many injuries – and he’s tried a more stern approach, too, on one occasion “reading his team the riot act” with regard to commitment. THORNLEY, AMANDA RACHEL March 24, 1989 - June 15, 2010

It is with deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Amanda Rachel Thornley. Amanda was an exceptional student from an early age. She was a student at Star of the Sea Elementary and Elgin Park Secondary Schools in South Surrey before moving to Abbotsford. Amanda was an Honour Roll student at Robert Bateman Secondary. She was active in Choir, Yearbook Committee, Bateman Leadership Team, Multicultural Club, The Key Club (Kiwanis), S.T.A.R., Peer Tutoring and Operation Xmas Child. Amanda received numerous scholarships and was a nominee for the Governor Generals award including a tuition paid scholarship to U.B.C. where she had just completed a third year. She worked in Abbotsford at McDonald’s, Shoppers Drug Mart and then at La Provence Restaurant. She truly enjoyed her most recent job at the Bombay Company in Vancouver. Amanda will be remembered by her family and friends for her incredible sense of adventure, love of books, her passion for travel, her infectious smile and the friendliness she showed to everyone she met. Amanda we know you are with us every day, unseen and unheard but always here. YOU ARE LOVED AND MISSED EVERY MOMENT Love, Mom, Dad, Christa, Steve, Zach, Connor, Kristi, family and friends, There was a funeral mass for Amanda at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Ave., in Abbotsford on Monday, June 21, at 10:00 am. Reception followed. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the S.P.C.A. in Amanda’s name would be appreciated.

OBITUARIES

Hull, Alma C. 1921 - 2010 Alma C Hull passed away suddenly but peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital on Wednesday, June 16th, 2010. Alma will be sadly missed by her daughter Susan (Donald) of Ottawa, sons William (Lorrene) of Red Deer, David (Julie) of Burnaby, and Timothy (Anne) of Calgary, as well as 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband John Hull in 1961. Alma is survived by her sisters Doris, Norah, and Marjorie, her brothers, Ronald and Maurice, and numerous nieces and nephews. Alma was born in Liverpool, England, to parents Constance and Garfield Jones. During WW2, she served in the Home Guard. It was during this time that she met and married a dashing RCAF pilot, Jack Hull from Fairview, Alberta. In late 1944, Alma immigrated to Canada aboard a troop ship, landing at Pier 21 in Halifax, with baby William in her arms. After a seven day train trip across Canada, Alma arrived at her new home in Fairview, Alberta, on December 23rd, 1944. It was in Fairview that Jack and Alma raised their family together before Jack’s untimely death in 1961. Following Jack’s death, Alma enrolled at the U of A in Edmonton where she obtained her teaching certificate. After teaching in Edmonton for several years, she followed her heart to Vancouver where she taught in the Delta School system. She took a break from teaching to enroll at UBC and earned a B.Ed., majoring in Library Science. After retiring from teaching, she moved to White Rock, where she resided until her death. Alma had a passion for learning. She was interested in the big questions of life: What is my purpose? How do I steer my own course in life? Is there more to this marvelous universe than I see around me? Until her eyesight failed, she was a voracious reader of books on science, religion and philosophy. Recently, she found Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now” inspirational. She also pursued her interests in painting, drawing and theatre arts, and was a long time supporter of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She embraced the computer era, using the internet to explore the world and email to connect with friends and family. Alma found friendship and a community of shared values in the Unitarian Church of Vancouver and the South Fraser Unitarian Congregation. A Memorial Celebration of Alma’s life will be held at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28 Ave. Surrey, BC, on Saturday, June 26th at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to: CNIB: #4 – 5015 – 48 St. Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 1S9. Further information may be found at www.mem.com
