City survey indicates strong opposition from some to Surrey-wide plan
Secondary-suite enforcement sought by both sides Kevin Diakiw Black Press
A move to allow secondary suites in every Surrey dwelling is getting mixed reviews, with heavy resistance in some communities that remain strongly opposed to the plan. The city is soliciting polling company Ipsos Reid to conduct a survey of whether people approve of
allowing a secondary suite per residential building in Surrey. Frank Russell, with the Fraser Heights Community Association, said there are several secondary suites in that community, and he describes support for them as mixed, with residents expressing concerns over the city’s historic lack of bylaw enforcement. “You can put in rules and guide-
lines, but if you don’t enforce the existing ones, what’s the point?” Russell asked. “There’s a lot of concern, even among those in support of secondary suites, about granting amnesty to people who have basically ignored the rules.” People in West Rosemary Heights and West Panorama Ridge agree. Mark Erdman, with the West Rosemary Heights Homeowners
Association, said there are already plenty of suites in the area. The challenge will be enforcing any bylaw that is introduced. In Panorama Ridge, there is even more pushback against allowing secondary suites as a source of revenue. At a recent meeting of the West Panorama Ratepayers Association (WPRA), 125 people were asked if
they approved of “revenue-generating” suites. All but one opposed them. However, about two-thirds of those attending said they wouldn’t mind having suites for families. Like Fraser Heights, Panorama Ridge residents want to see bylaws enforced and do not support any form of amnesty. “It did come up and it’s obviously a see page 4

The call comes over the radio shortly after takeoff from Langley Airport. There’s been a robbery in Burnaby, and the suspects have fled into a residence. Police descend on the neighbourhood about 7:45 p.m., and the team assigned to Air 2 heads north. “Looks like you’re going to have a little fun,” Const. Tammy Sandquist tells a reporter along for the ride on this June evening. From a vantage point 1,200 feet up, the helicopter circles an otherwise unremarkable grey-and-blue-stucco house. If anyone tries to flee undetected, Sandquist will relay the move to officers on the ground, and all but quash any hope of escape. ❝You can It’s assistance the White run but you Rock-born constable has can’t hide – provided many times since becoming a tactical flight that’s what I officer with the Mounties’ say to kids.❞ air services section last November. A gaggle of Canadian geese stop traffic along 16 Avenue, near Southmere Village Park. In recent weeks, the Peace Arch News has fielded a number of phone calls from readers who have seen the brazen fowl wandering across Peninsula roads.
Shots fired lead to arrest Two men were arrested at gunpoint last week, following a shots-fired report in South Surrey. Police responded to the call around 6 p.m. June 21. Passerby Ron Eves said he was stopped near Morgan Crossing when he spotted what he described as a long-barrelled rifle being pointed out the window of a dark-coloured truck. The passenger appeared to be shooting towards some birds sitting on a telephone pole, he said in a letter to Peace Arch News (see page 7). The truck then turned and stopped about 30 metres in front of Eves’ vehicle. Once again, the window came down and the weapon was pointed and fired. Police responding to the incident took no chances, said Const. Peter Neily. They stopped the truck near 151A Street and 20 Avenue and, guns drawn, ordered the occupants out.

Two men, a 38-year-old from White Rock and a 29-year-old from Surrey, were arrested without incident. A search of the truck located an air rifle. Neily said police are recommending charges of pointing a firearm. It makes no difference that the weapon was an air rifle, he said. “Even if it’s not a real gun… a bullet-firing weapon, it can be considered as a firearm,” Neily said. “If anyone believes it to be a gun, then it is considered to be a firearm. It’s impossible to tell the difference. “And, they’re just as dangerous, too. They do fire a projectile that can cause damage.” Eves told PAN that police were “rapid, responsive and very much aware of public safety” in attending to the incident. “Their reply makes you very aware that they’re out there,” he said. The arrested men were released on a promise to appear. - Tracy Holmes

news ‘Huge cuts’ hindered health care in past, says physician
Cautious optimism over Falcon’s plan Alex Browne Staff Reporter
A program that aims to provide family doctors for all B.C. residents by 2015 is getting a cautiously positive response from local doctors. But reinforcing the importance of family doctors is an adjunct to a functioning health system, not a replacement for one, according to Crescent Beach’s Dr. Charles King, a member of the steering committee for the White Rock-South Surrey division of family practice announced last week. Thursday in White Rock, Health Minister Kevin Falcon announced $137 million in funding to be channelled through the divisions so that doctors will be available for
so-called “orphan” patients not currently registered with their own doctors. King said Monday the division of family practice concept itself – in which doctors in an area voluntarily collaborate to manage patients – has been quietly in effect in the Peninsula for a year and a half. And the approach, bolstered by infusions of ministry funding, has been effective in re-establishing the traditional family doctor as the model for primary health care delivery in the province. It’s a model that latest research has shown to be most effective in providing patient care and better outcomes, King said. “We do have to give this government credit for recognizing the role of primary-care physicians – for looking at new research and
trying to apply it,” he said. “You’re not freeing up capacity when you’re closing other services – it’s fallBut that shouldn’t be taken as a blanket endorsement of B.C. Libing back on us,” he said. One local success of the divisional erals’ health policies, he warned. “At the same time, there have approach, said King, is the “house been huge cuts to services,” he said, doc” program at Peace Arch Hospital, in which funding has been provided noting operating rooms have been closed for three months for anyfor a doctor to be on duty for 10 hours to back up the hospital visits of family thing other than emergency surgeries. “My patient – who should doctors. The view from above – over Crescent Beach (right) and White Rock (above) – offers tactical flight officers a unique perspective on crime taking place all over the Lower Mainland.
Air surveillance makes for safer pursuits: officer from page 1 Morrison, a White Rock resident and one of five Lower Mainland Air Services pilots, guides Air 2 south. En route to the Semiahmoo Peninsula, they look for a suspected impaired driver in New Westminster, while Sandquist shares details of a file she assisted on the previous night, when the parents of an eight-year-old reported their child missing. Investigation determined the couple, who had been drinking, believed they’d lost their son on the walk home. It turned out, they were simply so drunk, they forgot the boy. “Unfortunately, the parents were so intoxicated, they didn’t realize they’d left him at the party they were at,” Sandquist says. Police reported the incident to officials with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, she adds. In airspace over the Semiahmoo Peninsula, Morrison pilots Air 2 above the Crescent Beach and White Rock waterfronts, past the Peace Arch – where U.S. officers can be seen conducting a road check just south of the border – and back northward, over Grandview Corners, Sunnyside Park and the Serpentine
River. (That latter area is where Sandquist in April used her bird’s-eye view to locate a man’s body that had been spotted in the river by a passerby.) Whatever the incident, Air 2 and Air 1 – in operation since 2006 – have proven their worth, Sandquist says. Introduced to aid police in ground pursuits, the air units have been instrumental in reducing the risk associated with chasing fleeing suspects.
“It eliminates the bad guy looking out the rear-view mirror and saying, ‘I’m being chased by police,’” Sandquist says, noting such drivers drive faster and disobey more traffic signs and signals when they believe they are being followed. Overhead surveillance makes the pursuit all the more effective, she says. “With us, people don’t look up. They look behind.” As for making a job ❝With us, people out of the view from don’t look up. They above, it’s pretty hard look behind.❞ to beat, Sandquist says. “You’re getting a great view and you’re helping the guys out on the ground. When you can help them out and everybody gets to the point safely, that’s very rewarding.” Air 2 touches down back at Langley Airport just before 9 p.m., as the daylight begins to fade. The shift has been quiet so far, but that can change in a heartbeat – and does. Sandquist’s radio crackles to life: a bait car has been stolen. Air 2 is needed once again.
Eye from the sky The RCMP’s Air Services Section has quite the history. It was first suggested as early as 1919, and got its official start in 1937, with four de Havilland Dragonflies and eight pilots. It all but disappeared during the Second World War, reforming in 1946 with aircraft including the Grumman Goose. Used for 49 years, the Goose was the longest-serving aircraft. Helicopters were added to the arsenal in 1971. Air 1 started operation in mid-2006; Air 2 joined the fleet in 2009. Between May 2006 and July 2009, the Lower Mainland helicopter program – a partnership of provincial government, ICBC, RCMP and municipal police detachments – assisted in recovering 179 stolen vehicles, resulting in 263 arrests; and terminated 78 vehicle pursuits, resulting in 100 arrests. The majority of pilots in the helicopter program are civilian members of the RCMP.

Morgan takes an exhaustive look Grade 5 students at South Surrey’s Morgan Elementary have won Surrey’s Climate Change Showdown. The challenge, consisting of an interactive board game and workshops designed to educate students about sustainability and climate-change solutions, took place in 10 schools across the city. The BC Sustainable Energy Association encourages students
to work as a team as they learn about environmental consequences of personal and community actions. Participating students received worksheets, multimedia materials and a takehome brochure printed in English, Mandarin and Punjabi containing tips to meet greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. Morgan teacher Tracy Majhen described the showdown as a great
way to start off her class’s science unit and a fun way to motivate students. Majhen’s class, including top individual player Ashley McGonigle, will be recognized at a July 12 council meeting. Other elementary schools that participated included HT Thrift, Brookside, AJ McClellan, Betty Huff, Green Timbers, Holly, Coyote Creek, Chimney Hill and Harold Bishop.

Plans for the longawaited city hall for North Surrey was expected to be unveiled this week. However, website civicsurrey.com got an early copy of schematics of the splashy $50-million building and posted them online last week, prior to the official unveiling of drawings at a public ceremony Tuesday (after Peace Arch News’ deadline). The city retained Kasian-Moriyama Architects to prepare a design for the new city hall building and the civic plaza. It will be built on 104 Avenue between University Drive and City Parkway, putting

it beside the yet-to-be built City Centre Library. The new city hall will have about 180,000 square feet of space and will likely contain council chambers and a few select departments of the hall. The adjoining civic plaza will have a 5,000-person capacity. City Centre is one
of the main focuses for civic development, with the library, city hall and potentially a performing arts centre to come. In addition, the area will be home to a new outpatient hospital and the RCMP Headquarters, known as E-Division. The city has set aside $10 million for the $50-million city
hall project. Surrey expects to borrow the remainder from the Municipal Financing Authority and pay back that loan through rental of parts of the current municipal building. Construction of the new city hall will begin next year and it’s expected to be complete by the fall of 2013.

Protesters’ messages lost amid violence t’s a shame how a small group of individuals can tarnish the image of something that is, at its heart, so much greater. We saw that reality play out again last weekend in Toronto, as world leaders met to discuss the global economy. Protesters were expected at the G20 summit, and security preparations to the tune of $1 billion made. The right to protest, to speak out, is, or should be, everyone’s. And acting on that right has been seen time and again over the years, in every generation. Sadly, when those protests turn violent – as has happened too often in the past – the message is too easily lost. It is unclear whether many of those involved in the latest rallies were even aware of what their message was. What is known is the end result of the weekend’s protest cost innocent business owners and other taxpayers, led police to arrest hundreds, angered those who call Toronto home and clouded Canada’s historically kinder, gentler image. Those who call the Semiahmoo Peninsula home may have watched the violence unfold on TV, but they are not immune to the black mark the protests left on the country, nor the anger it created. As one White Rock resident commented Monday in a call to Peace Arch News, the riots and vandalism are an insult to Canada, rather than anything even marginally productive. But as Canadians fume and vent over the dark cloud that was cast, it is important to remember – and not just on the eve of our national birthday – that our country is so much more than a few people masked in black. Meaningful protests don’t involve disguises. Genuine protesters realize how much more can be achieved simply through raising awareness; through educated, rational discussion. Last weekend’s violent protesters, regrettably, did far more damage than simply miring their own message. They hindered future peaceful protesters’ access to freedom of speech. What happened in Toronto makes it all the more important to celebrate Canada Thursday. Show the world – and, more importantly, your community – that Canadian is still, abundantly and peacefully, a great thing to be.

It not only was a real war, it still is. As white-haired veterans saluted and wiped away tears last week at the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand monuments at Gapyeong, North Korea declared a “no sail” zone around itself, a signal that last year’s nuclear test may soon be followed by short-range missile tests. And yet, there are signs of hope. A Canadian Forces officer still presides over entries and exits to the Kaesong Industrial Complex, built recently by Hyundai and other South Korean corporations inside North Korea. It employs North Koreans and has not been shut down by their regime despite tensions over the unprovoked torpedoing of a South Korean patrol ship in March. China still backs North Korea, but its patience is being tested. Twice in the past month, Chinese businessmen have been arrested for straying beyond authorized travel areas on sales trips inside North Korea. In the first of these incidents, three of these newly entrepreneurial Chinese citizens were shot and killed. Even here, capitalism is slowly winning the long war with communism. Good work ends gunplay An open letter to Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Fraser MacRae. I had the occasion to be at Morgan Crossing, parked and checking my purchase at Wal-Mart. I observed a late-model darkcoloured Ford to have the passenger roll down his window and discharge a long-barrelled rifle towards some birds sitting on a telephone pole. There were several children nearby that ran away, and I stayed in my vehicle and watched this vehicle turn around. It then stopped roughly some 30 metres in front of my vehicle and once again the longbarrelled weapon, with wooden barrel and scope, was pointed out the window and discharged. The weapon had the real-life appearance of a Ruger Mini-14. I called 911 and gave them the plate of the vehicle as it drove away. I stayed a safe distance behind, and the response by your agency was quick, safe and with all due regard for public safety. I was contacted by a member named Const. M. Estrada and found this member to be very polite, professional and detailed. Further, his deportment was refreshing to see, and one can tell from chatting with him that he enjoys greatly what he does and the community he serves. I write this as the fine work of the people of your detachment is often not noticed or commented on. Ron Eves, Surrey
South Surrey to join White Rock, or to keep the status quo? Why not start all over and create a new city that encompasses all of the Semiahmoo Peninsula? After all, that’s how we identify ourselves, and it is what the founding fathers of White Rock envisioned. I don’t see a downside to this at all. Here’s to the new City of Semiahmoo! All those in favour…? Erika Johanson, Surrey

CSIS boss right about leaders Editor: With regards to CBC’s two-part report last week entitled “Inside CSIS,” the director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Richard Fadden, should be given top marks for calling a spade a spade; albeit he did it in a gentle and diplomatic manner. He was painting a realistic picture for a naive audience who have little to no understanding of the world of political and economic espionage or foreign interference. It is interesting to note those that cry foul the loudest are usually those in business or public office who see themselves in the limelight and on the “cutting edge” of international relations and understanding. At least that is how they like themselves to be seen, and they are mortified when someone suggests that their activities may not be in our – Canada’s – best interests. There are cases where those kinds of relationships, when closely examined, show Canadians are
being manipulated and being groomed by foreigners to support long-term political or economic initiatives which in the end “give away the farm.” And, it is often without their realization. Of course, denial is their strongest card. A number of mayors in the Lower Mainland accepted an allexpense-paid “junket” to China in the spring of 2007, paid for by a Chinese developer without, it seems, giving any consideration to the appropriateness of their actions. This is a classic example of the kinds of influence Fadden was talking about. CSIS is an establishment of the government of Canada with a mandate to protect the interests of all Canadians. It is not an organization to be seen as a sinister menace to harass Canadians in their legitimate day-to-day activities. Unwittingly or willingly coming under the influence of a foreign power can and does happen and is a fact of life, and Canadians need to be attuned to that reality. There is a reason the saying “the smile on the face of the tiger” was coined. L.N. (Len) Giles, Surrey

Here’s to City of Semiahmoo Editor: Re: Learning to say they’re Surrey, June 23 letters. I’ve lived on the Semiahmoo Peninsula for three years – White Rock for the first year or so and “South” Surrey after that. When I cross the border coming back into Canada, I say I reside in Surrey; after all, it’s the truth. But to others who don’t know that White Rock doesn’t encompass the entire Semiahmoo Peninsula, I identify myself as living in White Rock. After all, what most of us refer to as South Surrey is geographically and environmentally tied to White Rock. Unfortunately – and here’s my point – we are a part of Surrey. As a result, the Peninsula is experiencing a surge of condos with ridiculously small square footage, fit only for someone just starting out and who has no furniture to begin with, and cramped houses such as those sprouting up on 128 Street that are not fit for older people because of stairs, and would quickly be outgrown by a young family. This is causing a dramatic shift in demographics, increased traffic congestion, increased criminal activity, increased pollution and degradation of the environment. Are there really only these options: for White Rock to join Surrey; for

White Rock’s new tree bylaw did not stop a nine-unit townhouse development from being approved last week.
Role of trees mirrors Avatar story Editor: It is my understanding a group of tall firs will be cut down to make way for housing on Everall Street. The majority of White Rock council approved this development after having passed, earlier this year, a bylaw to protect the few remaining trees in this small city. At least Coun. Helen Fathers has an understanding of what this bylaw means, and voted against their removal. It behooves the council to take their public trust a might more seriously. Does the majority feel trees will somehow save themselves for future generations? The beautiful canopy of firs that are still surviving in
White Rock need some help to be venerable. I was listening to a Scottish botanist speak last week about research into plants and trees. She said the role of trees – specifically old trees – is that they have the capacity to actually regulate climate. This ability has just been discovered, that within their stoma, they can seed the clouds to bring rain, if it is needed. The old trees pass on this regulatory response – unbeknownst until now – through tree-to-tree communication to younger trees. Let’s heed the bylaw and allow this extraordinary, Avatar-like reality to be undisturbed. L.C. Bjorknas, White Rock

RV fire investigated Surrey Fire Service is investigating an early morning blaze that engulfed an RV the size of a charter bus. Police were dispatched to a property in the 16600-block of 32 Avenue at 1:15 a.m. June 23, after three passersby called 911 to report the fire. The RV was fully engulfed when police arrived, said Const. Kenn Meglic. By the time the fire was extin-
guished, there was almost nothing left of the vehicle. No one was inside at the time. Investigation has determined the fire likely started in the kitchen of the camper, which was situated on a property with a vacant house and several sheds. It’s believed squatters may have been living at the site, Meglic said.

South Surrey resident Wendy Hartford is researching women and healthy food choices. Brian Giebelhaus photo

hile watching TV, flipping through magazines or passing billboards, women are inundated with health information. Messages promote various diets, exercises and weight-loss strategies, and stress the importance of consuming enough nutrients. Not only does South Surrey resident Wendy Hartford want to learn exactly where Peninsula women receive their health information, she is also looking to find out how they make sense of it. “So often I hear… ‘There’s so much information out there, I don’t know what to believe,’” Hartford said. “Overall, I am trying to find ways of improving how health, nutrition and exercise messages are delivered so that people can more easily make healthy food and exercise choices.” Hartford is researching how women think about health for a thesis she is writing as part of her master’s degree. The former fitness and aerobics instructor began learning about nutrition when she left her position at a local fitness centre to return to school and gain a bachelor of science.
“During that time it became quite apparent my background in nutrition was quite limited.” Hartford already knew by the time she finished her undergraduate degree in 2007 that she didn’t want to focus on the clinical aspect of nutrition, and was drawn instead to how people educate themselves about health. “I became interested in how people learn about nutrition and exercise.” She started in the department of education studies at UBC that same year, and, upon completing her courses a few weeks ago, began researching for her thesis. Hartford plans to talk to women between the ages of 20 and 40, to find out how they define – and fulfill – a healthy lifestyle. She chose the age group because she said women in it are becoming more independent, either making food choices for themselves or their families. Further criteria for the approximately 20 interviewees is that they exercise; have access to a variety of health information; cost of food is not an overriding factor when buying groceries; and they do at least 50 per cent of the grocery shopping in their household. The participating women are to also
be South Surrey/White Rock residents, to ensure they are exposed to the same advertising and social influences. Through individual interviews and focus groups with the participants, Hartford hopes to learn how they make food choices. “Where are they getting information from? How do they determine what’s reliable?” She will also look at the role media play in how women regard health, from images of “extremely thin” celebrities in magazines to news reports of food and exercise studies. “Media are also using healthy aspects of nutrition to advertise their products,” she added. Hartford said making healthy food choices isn’t always easy, and can be confusing when there are multiple brands that provide the same product and have only minor differences in their ingredient lists. “I would like to determine how women who are health conscious, how do they simplify the process of buying food every week?” Hartford has posted requests for participants in local businesses, and is looking for a few more to complete her research, which she hopes to have finished by the fall.

Although she isn’t expecting to draw any definite answers from her analysis, Hartford expects it will open up more channels to explore on the topic. “There will be further lines to pursue.” The research may also prove valuable for people in the fitness realm who – just like herself at one time – know little about nutrition. “I would like to do a program for educational purposes – for personal trainers who perhaps don’t have access to nutrition information,” she said, noting the research could also be used by health experts or educators. “I’m hoping what I do find will be useful for people delivering health and nutritional information.” With a desire to gain her PhD in the field – and her current efforts to build a health website – Hartford said health is a critical factor in people’s lives, and a subject she plans to continue exploring. “I just think it’s really essential,” she said. “Out of all the things we can do, eating and exercising is something we can have some control over.” For more information on Hartford’s research, call 778-887-4124 or email wenhar@interchange.ubc.ca

Dog days of summer The White Rock Farmers’ Market went to the dogs last week as dozens of pooches were bathed and groomed to raise money for a local organization. The Semiahmoo Animal League Inc. (SALI) teamed up with the Paw Spa June 20 to offer the doggy makeovers for the group’s second annual Dog Wash. For a minimum $20 donation, pooches were bathed in warm water, dried, brushed and had their nails clipped. A photographer was also on hand to snap pictures of all the dogs and their shiny new dos. “It went really well, and we really enjoyed being at the market,” said Karen Denroche, director and founder of SALI. “It was too bad that it was a little chilly, but everyone was happy.” By the end of the day, volunteers had washed 42 dogs, raising a total of $1,300 to go towards building a barn at SALI’s Farm. Although the farm’s location has not yet been determined, it is planned to be “a safe haven for at-risk children and rescued farm animals to bond, learn and heal with one another,” Denroche said. Having just begun a one-year term as president of the Surrey Board of Trade, Nigel Watkinson isn’t planning on making any changes. “You’ve only got a year, and you can’t change the world in a year,” said the South Surrey-based financial planner. “You’re working with the board of directors anyhow, so what I have to do is build on what the previous president has done.” Watkinson began his term as president last Thursday, taking over from outgoing president James Stewart following the board’s annual general meeting. Syrupy Sunday The Peace Arch Monarch Lions’ annual Father’s Day pancake breakfast drew a crowd to the Royal Canadian Legion on June 20. Two-year-old Tyler Scott (left) wasn’t interested in his own breakfast, but was quick to make sure dad, Jacob, wasn’t short on syrup for his pancakes, while two-year-old Luke Ferdinands (above) enjoyed plenty of pancakes, along with father, Jovan.

Great to be a grandparent
W
hile visiting grandchildren sometimes tax the entertainment abilities of grandparents, there’s no reason to fret. The Peninsula provides a wealth of fun-filled activities sure to delight all ages, including the young at heart. From beautiful, sunny beaches and picturesque parks to family-friendly festivals, museums and much more, there’s certainly no shortage of fun activities to entertain grandchildren. One of the best things about being a grandparent is that you can have fun with your grandkids, doing things you might never do on your own. And what better way to bond with your little loved ones than to go back in time with a trip to the Historic Stewart Farm? The site, located at 13723 Crescent Road, offers a variety of special family events and programming for children, teens and adults throughout the year. Aside from a fully-restored 1894 farmhouse, it features a pole barn, root cellar, heirloom gardens and orchard in a pastoral setting on the Nicomekl River. Rediscover Peninsula with grandkids from page 19
Suggested admission: adults: $5, seniors and students: $3.75, child and youth: $2.50, children under five: free. The White Rock Museum and Archives is
another great place for learning and discovery. Located in the historic White Rock Train Station on the popular Marine Drive waterfront, the quaint museum houses photos, writings and
artifacts of yesteryear, in collections that tell stories of the natural history, First Nation history, railway history and settlement history of the seaside city. The museum also
Ruth’s Appointment Calendar Used To Be The TV Guide
offers heritage walking tours, which take you on a short jaunt through White Rock’s history. What can be better than strolling along the beach with your grandchildren, exploring the sights and learning about the city’s past and present? The walk lasts around an hour, the perfect length of time for tiny attention spans. For cloudy days, a movie matinee can be an excellent way to bridge the generation gap. Semiahmoo Peninsula has two theatres offering a selection of the latest first-run movies. The Criterion 4 White Rock, 2381 King George Blvd. has four screens showing multiple film
options; Rialto Twin (604-541-8495), with two screens, is located at 1732 Johnson Rd. (across from Semiahmoo Centre). If all else fails, let the kids burn off all that extra energy at one of the local parks or trails, which can be a great incentive to get outside, be active and take advantage of what the area has to offer, at no cost. Whether it’s to have a picnic in the sun, take a brisk stroll or let the kids play on the playground, green spaces are lush and plentiful. The South Surrey Athletic Park boasts a bike park, water park and picnic area for you to enjoy plus the park
often hosts sporting events, which can be fun for kids to watch. Crescent Park at 2610 128 St. is the perfect place for picnics, as it contains open and covered picnic areas with barbecues and ovens, plus a playground for children. Also check out Redwood Park at 20 Avenue and 176 Street, a tree farm created by a pioneer family more than a 100 years ago, with 32 different species of trees as well as trails. Just remember, whatever you decide to do, a loving grandparent can make a real difference in a child’s life, as you are a an important links to their history and traditions.

Project gives seniors a voice in the community
M
Photovoice participants were presented to the Semiahmoo Seniors Planning table for review, and she’s currently working on putting together a final report for the White Rock Age-Friendly Plan.
She’s encouraging more seniors in the community to get involved and contribute their talents to the project. “It’s a really good way to engage people,” Raey said. “It gives
you a voice in a nonthreatening way.” Anybody interested in getting involved in Photovoice or the Seniors Planning Table can contact 778-5524538 or natasha@ raeyconsulting.com

in isolation, you can’t really commit to a lot – things are moving so fast and we feel threatened.” After attending an information meeting, Hamson was outfitted with a disposable camera, which she used to document things around the community she felt were good and things she felt were impractical. What resulted was a variety of different issues both good and bad, from bus stops without a bench where Hamsom feels there should be one to a crosswalk on Johnston Road she feels is well-planned, safe and age-friendly. Since participating in Photovoice – hosted by Sources Community
Resource Centres and the City of White Rock – Hamson said she feels much more connected to the community and confident about her ability to be involved. “I’ve realized what a strong personality I have, and that I’m kind of an advocate for getting things done,” she said. That’s exactly the outcome that Natasha Raey, a consultant who has helped organize and promote the project, was hoping for when the idea for Photovoice was first presented. “It makes us feel really good,” she said. “That’s why this project came to be, to engage seniors and use their gifts and talents.” According to Raey, the photos taken by

aggie Hamson is the first to admit she had been living a life of isolation for the past nine years. When the 74-year-old artist moved to White Rock nearly a decade ago, it was in search of a more artistic, seniorfriendly environment. However, instead of branching out to find new people to meet and interesting activities to take part in, Hamson found herself struggling to relate to others in the area, feeling so alone that she even considered moving away. All that changed a few months ago, when Hamson saw an ad calling for volunteers to be a part of a project called Photovoice, where local seniors would take pictures throughout the community illustrating things that are agefriendly and things that aren’t. The idea immediately struck a chord with Hamson, who saw a way to use her existing talents to express ideas she had in a pressurefree way. “I was so afraid of stepping out, but I thought, ‘surely I can take a photograph,’” she said. “When you’re living

Tub provides safety, luxury

hen Doris McDonough was getting ready to move into her White Rock apartment nearly three years ago, she and her son decided to renovate first. New appliances were put into her kitchen, cupboards and counter tops were replaced and the walls were painted, freshening up her new home. But there was one renovation in particular that took place that McDonough, 83, describes as “a Godsend” – her bathtub was replaced with a specially designed walk-in bath/shower. “When older people get stiff from sitting down, you have no momentum and no leverage to get back up,” McDonough said of the problems she and other seniors sometimes have with conventional bathtubs. “This one is just perfect, I feel so safe in it.” With a swinging door for easy entry, plenty of safety rails, a seat and a removable shower head, McDonough said both showering and bathing are much simpler tasks now. Her tub also includes hydro jets, for a little extra massage while bathing. “It’s very relaxing and very soothing,” McDonough said. “I feel as if I’ve got my own luxurious spa.” According to Kevin Donohoe of Guardian Residential Services, the bathroom is an area of concern among

many seniors whose needs begin to change as they get older. “The bathroom is the first room where we start to find changes in normal function,” he said. Donohoe said a typical bathroom renovation, like the one his company provided for McDonough, takes only two days and is minimally intrusive. He also said regardless of the shape or size of a bathroom, there are plenty of different designs to choose from. “There’s a solution for every bathroom,” he said. As for McDonough, despite a short adjustment period, she said she couldn’t live without it. “It took a little while to get used to,” she said. “But now, I couldn’t go back to a conventional tub.”

Young People’s Opera Hansel and Grrretel, an updated version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s 19th century opera, is the current production of the Young People’s Opera Society, playing at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88 Ave., until July 4. Presented with the permission of Vancouver’s Opera Appassionata, the show hews closely to their version two years ago, helmed by the adaptor, librettist and original director, Argun Tekant. In this version, Hansel and Gretel flee an abusive home and instead of winding up in the forest, find themselves in the mean streets of a contemporary city, where they face the dangers that may confront street people every day. While the message is still “never take candy from a stranger” it symbolizes the ‘‘just say no” message being taught in schools. Even in the dangerous world of the streets, Hansel and Gretel learn, that there are ‘angels’ willing to keep them safe and lend a helping hand. Joining Hansel (Julia Fox) and Gretl (Dodi Barrillec – winner of the Barry Alexander International vocal competition in December) are such experienced players as Jennifer Moran (Mother), Robert Newcombe (Father), Stephen Rusch (Sandman), Alisha Schaffer (Voice of Sandman), Chelsea Emery (Witch) and Colleen Blair (Dew Fairy). Also featured are the Angel Chorus (Schaffer, Sarah Gilchrist, Devon Groves, Taylor Harrison, Joseph Messner, Jenni Rempel, Monica Samson and Jenni Slinn. Shows are all at 7:30 p.m., except for a 3:30 p.m. matinee on July 1 (Canada Day) and 2:30 matinee on July 4 (final show of the run). Families should note the production is best suited to children over age 10, as it may frighten some younger children. For tickets ($20; $15 seniors and students; $10 children 12 and

Dean Paul Gibson One of Earl Marriott Secondary theatre program’s most successful alumni, Jessie award-winner Dean Paul Gibson, returns to Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach festival this year in a dual role – director of the main stage production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, which runs to Sept. 25, and as the title character in Falstaff (running July 1 to Sept. 22). The gorgeously-costumed Much Ado About Nothing has been set by Gibson in an appropriate period, the Edwardian era just before the Great War. In contrast, Falstaff, directed by Glynis Leyshon, is set in late medieval period. An adaptation of sections of Henry IV parts one and two, it traces the story of young prince Hal (later Henry V) and his misspent youth under the influence of outrageous drunk and brawler Sir John Falstaff. One of theatre’s most beloved characters, Falstaff was certainly a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who commissioned The Merry

No Sex, Please... Summer theatre, English style, will come to Coast Capital Playhouse in July with the opening of the saucy farce No Sex, Please, We’re British, presented by The Royal Canadian Theatre Company. The show will run July 13 to Aug. 1 at the theatre, 1532 Johnston Rd. Written by A. Marriott and A. Foot, and directed by RCTC founder Ellie King, the play is a hilarious roller coaster ride following the increasingly desperate efforts of a young married couple and their nerdy bank clerk friend to dispose of an unwanted shipment of Scandinavian pornography. Keeping the offending materials away from a nosy mother, a pompous bank manager and a visiting police inspector are bad enough – and then some ‘good time’ girls arrive on the doorstep. The term “shop early for Christmas” definitely applies for tickets to this year’s Christmas with Lance Ryan, which are on sale now, even though the concert is scheduled for Dec. 15 (7:30 p.m.) at First United Church. The concert, a benefit for the Peninsula Arts Foundation, is a rare opportunity to see the internationally acclaimed White Rock-raised opera star in his hometown – otherwise fans of the tenor would have to travel to Europe where his management have him booked in back to back productions for such prestige venues as the Bayreuth Festival, where he will headline both Wagner’s Siegfried and Gotterdammerung in July and August (other dates this year

Also a noted muralist, Jordison delights in painting from nature and live models. A local leader in painting, Jordison helped set up the Larger Than Life Drawing Group in 1979, and her work, celebrating the colour and abundance of nature, shows influences of Bonnard, Van Gogh, Emily Carr and Georgia O’Keefe. Team forced to forfeit pair of wins due to use of ineligible players
Tritons coach calls PBL decision a joke Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter
Brent Swanson Tritons coach
Field day
White Rock Tritons coach Brent Swanson didn’t mince words last Thursday, a day after he was informed by B.C. Premier Baseball League brass that his club has forfeited a pair of wins due to using ineligible players. “It’s just pathetic what’s happening here, it’s a joke, an absolute joke,” said Swanson, who earlier this month announced he won’t be returning next season and is taking an assistant-coach-
ing job at UBC. The team – having won just seven of 35 games this year prior to the ruling – will also forfeit any future games in which Dustin Dhahani, Tanner Weaver and Todd Bird player. The trio of Tritons are all Blaine, Wash. natives, and were all brought on board within the last month to help fortify a Tritons’ roster beset by low numbers and injuries. The PBL roster freeze was May 1, weeks before the players were added. However, Swanson said he was told via

Centennial Park was busy on the weekend, as White Rock-South Surrey Baseball held its annual Mini-8 tournament, featuring two local squads, as well as teams from Coquitlam, North Langley and Whalley. email to “do what you have to do” to field a team. White Rock had already forfeited four earlier games due to lack of players. When contacted Thursday, PBL president Ted Hotzak said the Tritons were expected to field a team not with new players, but with reinforcements from the Junior (U16) Tritons. “I think Coach Swanson is stretching what happened during that (email) conversation a bit,” he said, adding that, until this season, no team had ever
forfeited a game in his 17 years with the league. “The league has a policy in place, and rosters are frozen May 1. Brent has a perfectly good solution to his problem (by using junior players).” Swanson said the roster rule was enforced after a June 16 game against the Coquitlam Reds, who filed a protest with the league. “I totally understand the roster freeze, but they said to do what we need to do see page 34

Five-star athletes shine in warm-up Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter
More than 100 young athletes, including 17 from Ocean Athletics, were on hand at South Surrey Athletic Park Saturday, competing in the 2010 B.C. Junior Development Pentathlon – a warm-up for next month’s JD Championships in Kamloops. Saturday’s event, for athletes aged 9-13, saw competitors take part in five events – sprint hurdles, long jump, high jump, shotput and 800-metres – in a span of five hours. Results from each event are combined into a total score. The best result for Ocean Athletics came in the 11-year-old girls age group, where Danielle Steer finished second overall and Jaime Sainte-Onge placed just off the podium, in fourth. In the same division, Jorden Hall was ninth and Hope Steeved, 11th. In the nine-year-old boys division, OA’s Craig Schreier placed
sixth overall, while Haley Ribeiro was fourth overall among 10-yearold girls. Mantaj Bopari was the top local finisher in the 10-year-old boys division, placing seventh, just in front of Marc Butler and Ben Kustra, who were ninth and 11th, respectively. In the 11-year-old boys competition, Dominic Luccock was fifth, Dawson Ribiero sixth, Quinton Brown seventh and Luke Forsyth eighth. Three Ocean Athletics members competed in the 12-yearold girls division, led by Quiyuan Zhu, who was fifth, followed by Katie Herron in eighth and Jolden Bopari in ninth. Only one OA athlete, Josh Hartman, competed in the 13-year-old boys competition, finishing 10th. In total, 108 athletes from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the B.C. Interior took part in the meet. For more results, visit www. oceanathletics.org

Junior Tritons earn split with Abbotsford A two-game sweep was not in the cards last week for the White Rock Junior Tritons, who split a doubleheader with the Abbotsford Cardinals Wednesday night at South Surrey Athletic Park. White Rock opened strong, winning the first game 5-3, but lost the nightcap 3-2 when an error with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the Cards to score the winning run. In the opener, the Junior Tritons relied on the strong pitching performance of Shaylen Buis, who struck out seven batters over sixand-one-thirds innings. Nathan Trueblood came into the game in the seventh to pick up the save. Offensively, Preston Kokotailo had two doubles and a triple. Despite the loss in Game 2, White Rock was paced by pitcher
Trueblood. Shumka struck out 11 Abby batters and allowed only three hits. Buis and Shumka now
lead the BCJPBL in strikeouts, with 57 and 54, respectively, and Trueblood is eighth, with 42.
White Rock managed to get runners on base in their half of the eighth frame, but couldn’t cash them in.

Junior players will fill roster spots from page 31 to stop forfeiting games,â€? Swanson said Thursday. “The objective of this league is to keep kids playing baseball, and now they’re telling three of my kids that they can’t play anymore.â€? Swanson said he contacted all 12 rival PBL coaches last Monday, and all but two teams – Coquitlam and the Victoria Eagles – agreed that he should be able to finish the season with his current roster. “There’s 10 games left. It’s not like we’re going to make the playoffs anyway‌ just let the kids finish the season,â€? Swanson said. “I mean, we’re barely breathing here, and they’re still jumping on us. Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe it‌. This league is a joke. It’s in such shambles.â€? Hotzak said he was unsure of exactly how many games the Tritons would forfeit, but by Friday
morning the PBL’s website listed the team with a 5-31 record, two less wins than they had previously. The Tritons lost 7-2 to the Abbotsford Cardinals Thursday night with a lineup of primarily junior players. The three Blaine players did not play, but Swanson didn’t rule out putting them on the field at some point. “We’ll talk to the kids, and if they want their teammates to play with them, then we’ll let them play, Swanson said, adding that the league is still threatening to fine the team. “We’re a non-profit league – how to you fine a team with no money? Hotzak refused to get into a war of words with Swanson, calling him “a good, young coach who we are sorry to see leave, but did say he is concerned about the team’s glut of injuries.
“He’s got 15 players rostered, and he claims at least eight are injured. That concerns me because it points to maybe a coaching issue... maybe the kids are over-worked, overused, he said. Though Swanson has been outspoken this season in his criticisms of the league, Hotzak said the current disagreement over eligible players was not personal. “Brent and I have certainly had some spirited conversations, and I don’t have a problem with that at all, he said. “He had a lot put on his shoulders this season. I’m not sure that he had enough support from the management group in White Rock. It takes more than one person to run a premier league team. “But on the other hand, you have to play the cards you’re dealt. And if you don’t have the cards, you’ve got to find some.

OBITUARIES WILSON, Evelyn Margaret
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Evelyn Margaret Wilson (Sprague) at her home in White Rock, B.C. on Tuesday June 22, 2010. Evelyn was born July 17, 1923 in Prince Edward County Ontario and married Webster (Web) Wilson in 1942. She and Web lived in Belleville, Calgary, Ottawa and Mississauga, Ontario, moving to White Rock B.C. in 1990. Evelyn was predeceased by Web in 1995, son Richard in 1998, and daughter Susan in 2009. We take comfort knowing that they are together. She leaves behind daughter Jane and son-in-law Sandy, daughter-in-law Diana, grandchildren Steve (Brenda), Julie (Jeff), Jody (Jason), Drew, Heidi, Danny, and great-granddaughters Katrina, Amy, Samantha and Kennedy. Evelyn is also survived by sisters Pauline and Nell (Donald), brothers Glen (Wendy) and George (Evelyn) and a host of nieces and nephews whom she adored. Evelyn’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was excited with the recent news that two more great-grandchildren are due later this year. Because she so loved children, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Vancouver BC. Mom was laid to rest June 29, 2010 at Victory Memorial Park in Surrey BC accompanied by Dad’s ashes. A service was held at Crescent United Church. We will celebrate her life with family in Ontario in the weeks to come.

White Rock July 30 - August 1, 2010
festival
The Community of Lights Events Society is pleased to bring you the 61st Annual Spirit of the Sea Festival. The continued success of the festival requires community sponsorship and over 250 volunteers! Please consider the following sponsorship opportunities:
PRESENTING SPONSOR
$20,000
A safe and comfortable Festival atmosphere is built throughout careful planning. Many essential things are at first unnoticed by Festival participants... until needed. The Presenting Sponsor allows for these details to be addressed. The Presenting Sponsor is recognized within the Festival logo and throughout the Festival site.
PLATINUM OPPORTUNITIES
$15,000
Main stage The focal point of the Festival, the Main Stage, presents a mosaic of live entertainment all weekend long; with everything from jazz to blues, country to salsa, rock to big band and orchestras.
Fireworks A brilliant fireworks show lights up Semiahmoo Bay, to close the Festival schedule with a bang! Held on Sunday night, this stunning pyrotechnics display is a memorable highlight and regional attraction.
GOLD OPPORTUNITIES
$10,000
Torchlight Parade The Parade attracts thousands of people of all ages. Against the breathtaking backdrop of the White Rock Beach, this vibrant procession illuminates Marine Drive and is the highlight of the Festival.
East Beach Stage Talented songwriters are featured here on a smaller, more intimate stage, in a waterfront grassy park surrounded by a colourful market. This stage provides a constant, highly visible presence throughout the Festival weekend.
BRONZE OPPORTUNITIES
$3,000
Children’s Pirate Parade Korki the Clown and friends will be will be leading our 7th Annual Children’s Walking Parade, on Saturday morning. Children ar encouraged to decorate their bikes, strollers, etc., and to wear their favourite costume or come dressed for a FUN day at the beach. this year’s theme is: Pirates!
Waiter’s Race servers from the Peninsula’s finest restaurants test their skills, while racing in unusual ways, at the same time balancing trays of tall tippy drinks! This high-paced, hilarious event is a traditional Festival favourite.
White Rock Stiletto Stampede A new event this year is a short run in 3” or higher stiletto shoes. Held before the Torchlight Parade, this promises to be quite entertaining!
Flag Display Flags installed temporarily along the promenade and pier just for the Festival are a real crowd pleaser. They add even more colour and movement to the festive atmosphere. Being so vivid and attractive makes this a fantastic sponsorship opportunity. Two flags printed with your logo will be included in the display.
FESTIVAL FRIEND OPPORTUNITIES
$1,000
Catering Catered food is provided to the entertainers participating in the Festival.
Spirit of the Sea Run The popular 5K Walk/Jog/Run is back along the beach. Runners of all ages are welcome to go barefoot as they run beautiful White Rock Beach.
Volunteer Services
Festival Signage Many signs are needed for the Festival; to direct visitors and participants to the Festival, to move people throughout the Festival, to help people know where essential services are within the Festival, etc.
The Festival depends on hundreds of volunteers to make it a success. Volunteers are provided water and meal breaks, while they serve thousands upon thousands of Festival visitors. A BBQ is hosted for them in thanks for their hard work and community spirit.
SILVER OPPORTUNITIES
Coordinate and Event
$10,000
Spirit of the Sea Murals At prominent locations on the waterfront, teams of professional artists paint murals over the weekend. Festival visitors watch their progress as they create new public art. The murals, along with recognition of your sponsorship, remain highly visible along the White Rock waterfront all year.
Spirit Stage Located in the heart of our kids’ zone, this stage showcases music and entertainers to please our youngest Festival participants. Spirit stage sponsors have thousands of families as an audience, as they enjoy the sounds and stories in the cool shade of Semiahmoo Park.
Cupcake’s Teddy Bear Picnic Sunday’s the Day the Teddy Bears have their Picnic. Children bring their favourite bear, stuffie or snuggly for their annual checkup, have a lot of fun, and there is a wind-up stage show to delight “furry friends” and children alike.
Kids’ Carnival / Kids’ Zone A colourful, interactive zone just for kids! Children can test their skills at carnival games, with tons of prizes to be won.
This is a perfect opportunity for small businesses to show off their community spirit. Form a group of volunteers from our employees, family and friends to help plan your own activity at the Festival. Propose a new idea, or use one that has been successful in the past, such as mini golf, street races, beach games, obstacle courses, flag painting, and crafting or public art creation.
FESTIVAL ASSOCIATE OPPORTUNITIES
$500
Office Services There is a lot of planning which goes into the festival. This uses up a number of supplies and services; some of which are obvious, and some of which one wouldn’t think of immediately, but are essential to a properly-functioning Festival.
Security Security is seen and unseen. Both aspects are incredibly important to a safe, fun, worry-free Festival experience for the 100,00 visitors that attend.
Entertainment Entertainers’s fees for the various stages. From Children’s performers to 50 piece orchestras, all musical genres performed by artists of all ages are a highlight of the Festival.
Cash and in-kind donations of any amount are gratefully accepted. TO LEND YOUR SUPPORT TO ANY OF THE ABOVE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES OR FOR MORE DETAILS PLEASE CONTACT: entertainment@spiritofthesea.ca or www.spiritofthesea.ca Vendor and volunteer applications now available online.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is the leading cause of disability in elderly people. 42.4% of British Columbians older than 65 report that they have arthritis and approximately 306,000 people in our province sought medical treatment for this condition in 2005. This results in a large cost to our health care system and more importantly can lead to a decreased quality of life for those affected with uncontrolled pain. Arthritis is a progressive disorder characterized by inflammation and a resulting in loss of cartilage in the joint. This causes pain and stiffness in the joints and leads to decreased mobility. The most common joints affected are the knees, hips, hands, spine and big toes although it can occur in other joints as well. The most common risk factors for developing arthritis are obesity, joint trauma, certain occupations, family history and the one that none of us can avoid….getting older. So as our population ages, the incidence of arthritis is expected to increase. Some people with arthritis don’t require any specific treatment at all. However, options range from exercise and weight control, to physiotherapy, Carolyn Bubbar medications and natural products. Surgery can be considered as a last resort depending on the severity of the symptoms. Different medications target different parts of the problem. Some target pain only, others inflammation or cartilage damage. Not all medications are right for every person as it depends on your specific symptoms, your other medical conditions, and other medications that you may take. However, there are many effective treatment options available to discuss with your health care provider to determine which is right for you.
