Christmas spirit alive and well No shortage of festive fun on Semiahmoo Peninsula this year
W
ith less than a month to go before the big day, many Peninsula residents are shifting into high gear in order to get their Christmas shopping and errand-running done over the next few weeks. It’s important to remember, however, that the holiday season is about celebrating with friends and family, and taking time out of our busy schedules to enjoy the special moments. As always, there are plenty of great opportunities to enjoy the festive season around White Rock and South Surrey. Here’s a roundup of some of the holiday events taking place over the next month that are sure to get you in the Christmas spirit:
Breakfast With Santa A Peninsula tradition for those young and old, the White Rock Firefighter’s Breakfast with Santa takes place on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Adults and children alike are invited to the White Rock Fire Hall, 15315 Pacific Ave., where firefighters will be on hand serving up some of their delicious pancakes, bacon and sausage as well as coffee and juice. Kids can have their pictures taken with the big man in red, and will also have a chance to meet firefighters and get an up-close look at the fire trucks. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids, and all the proceeds go towards the Peace Arch News Stocking Fund and the B.C. Professional Firefighter Burn Fund.
Santa’s Parade of Lights Now in its seventh year, this family favourite takes place Sunday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m., running from the Cloverdale Fairgrounds to town centre. The parade will feature floats, marching bands, antique vehicles and horses, plus an amazing lighted truck parade. Donations will be collected for the Surrey Food Bank and the Surrey Christmas Bureau.
White Rock Farmers Market Though the market’s popular summer season is a thing of the past for this year, local producers and artisans will return for a special winter market on Sunday Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kent Street Activity Centre, 1475 Kent St. It’s a great opportunity to stock up on goodies for the holiday season as well as picking up some unique gifts, all while supporting local merchants. Visit www.whiterockfarmersmarket.ca for more information.
Semiahmoo Shopping Centre Besides being a great place to get Christmas shopping done, Semiahmoo Shopping Centre also has a host of holiday events lined up for the little ones this year. While Santa has already arrived at his specially designed Enchanted Garden, there is still plenty of opportunity to visit the big man in red. Visits take place daily to Dec. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (on evenings that the mall is open late). Everyone who visits Santa will get a special Christmas apple from his friends at PriceSmart Foods. When he’s not busy meeting all the boys and

Christmas-treat season is in full swing at Fieldstone Artisan Breads, where giftwrapped cookies in a variety of flavours fly off the shelves this time of year.
'Tis the season for sweets and treats I
f ever there was a time to relax the rules of your diet and indulge in delectable goodies, the holiday season is it. From dinner parties to bake sales and, of course, the all-important Christmas dinner, there is no shortage of opportunities to tempt your palate this time of year. And whether you’re looking for a treat to wrap up for under the tree, or something tasty to spruce up your holiday dinner party, there are plenty of places close at hand that can help out with the tasty side of Christmas. A great place to start this time of year is Fieldstone Artisan Breads on Crescent Road, where the Christmas season – and all the goodies that come with it – is well underway. Some of the favourites to be found at Fieldstone include the Pecan Frosty – a melt-in-your-mouth coneshaped shortbread snowball treat – as well as German Stollen and fruit cakes. Always in high-demand are the bakery’s beautifully packaged cookies in a variety of tempting flavours, which make a great gift for those on your list who are tough to buy for (as long as they’re willing to share!) Another popular holiday item at Fieldstone are the tourtieres, delectable meat pies that are a scrumptious tradition originating in Quebec. After a long day of Christmas shopping, these meat pies are a lifesaver for a tasty, traditional and easy-to-prepare dinner. Though many chocolate-lovers will admit to indulging in their favourite treat year-round, the

It’s also a busy time for Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, located at Peninsula Village, home to a delectable array of special holiday chocolate goodies. By far, the store’s most popular Christmas item is their chocolate Yule log, inspired by holiday traditions of the past. In 11th century Europe, families would bring a freshly cut log into their homes every Christmas Eve. Once on the hearth, it was sprinkled with oil, salt and mulled wine, then blessed with a prayer, and set ablaze. Families believed cinders from this Yule log would see page 7

Holiday goodies from chocolate to cheese from page 5 protect their home from evil spirits and destructive forces that Mother Nature occasionally bestows. At Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, the exquisite Yule logs are filled with an array of delectable chocolates and make a wonderful gift or addition to a dessert table. New to the chocolate shop this year are reusable Advent calendars – a yummy and fun Christmas tradition that helps count down the days to Santa’s arrival. For the grown-ups, hand-dipped cherries are always a popular choice this time of year. Organic B.C. cherries are marinated for 100 days in imported Italian liqueur, enveloped in fondant, hand-dipped in dark chocolate and rolled in chocolate shavings. Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut also has a wide selection of baking ingredients, including hazelnut spread, chocolate drops, baking bars, shavings and cocoa powder. If you or those on your holiday gift list tend to prefer savoury over sweet, you’ll definitely want to check out Roadhouse Bake Shoppe and Cheese Market. Volunteering: the greatest gift of all Community groups looking for people to lend a hand this season
A
ll too often this time of year, the word 'giving' conjures up visions of busy shopping malls, piles of wrapping paper and maxed out credit cards. While it feels good to be able to give presents to those we love, a gift many people never think to give is the gift of volunteering. Year after year, several organizations on the Semiahamoo Peninsula reach out to the public for assistance, including a call for volunteers, donations or non-perishable food items. Here are just a few of the groups in our generous community that could use an extra helping hand this holiday season:
Sources Food Bank Christmas is a time to spend with friends and family, eating good food and sharing gifts, but for many on the Semiahmoo Peninsula who do not have the luxury of a home or even regular meals, the holidays can be increasingly difficult. This year, make it easy to be on St. Nicholas’ nice list and give back to the community – whether it’s a food donation or simply donating time, there are so many ways to make someone’s Christmas a little bit better. Breast Cancer Fundraiser Though still several months away, Merv Sandrel and business partner Tim Everson are already gearing up for their third annual Mother’s Day fundraiser, “Going to Bat” for breast cancer research. The two men, who own Ball Park Sports, 103-18651 52 Ave., came up with the idea for the event as a way to teach kids how to give back to the community at a young age. Partnering with Nicola Romaniuk from the
Canadian Cancer Society and the Lower Mainland Baseball Association, Sandrel and Everson came up with the idea for local baseball teams to use pink wooden bats during the week of Mother’s Day. To date, the event has raised more nearly $8,000. Despite the success enjoyed in the past, Sandrel and Everson still require community support and are asking any minor sports associations to contact them to join the fundraiser. Anyone interested in donating or volunteering can contact them at 604-576-7865.
Forest of Light The local business community is also gearing up for the giving spirit of the holiday season. The Shops at Morgan Crossing is giving back to residents and community partners with their Forest of Light tree displays; the unveiling is on Dec. 1 from 6-9 p.m. Nearly 20 trees will be up to view in all their splendor at 15765 Croydon Dr. “Throughout the year, we have worked closely with community partners in helping them raise funds for their organizations, providing space for their fundraising activities and promoting their ventures in hopes to increase donations and participation in their events,” said Caylen Baker, a marketing assistant with Morgan Crossing. The festival will also include pictures with Santa, holiday train rides, story telling, crafts, live entertainment and goodies. Add sparkle to your home this season T
he use of lights to create a festive ambience at Christmas time dates back hundreds of year, to the mid 17th century, when small candles were glued to trees or attached to branches by pins. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that electricpowered Christmas lights were first used, at the time, coined “fairy lights.” It’s safe to say, the technology associated with Christmas lights – as well as the variety of sizes, shapes and colours – has come a long way over the past few centuries. Nowadays, the most popular types of Christmas lights to be found are LED strings, replacing the filament light bulbs that we’ve used over the past few decades. LED use less than 10 per cent of the electricity consumed by the old filament bulbs and can save a bundle on your electricity bill – they also

stay cooler than traditional lights, which makes them a safer bet for use on a real tree or near ornaments. Canadian Tire at South Point has a huge variety of both indoor and outdoor LED light sets, as well as all the accessories you’ll need for clipping, hanging and testing out your light display. One popular choice at Canadian Tire is the NOMA LED Rope Light, which is safe for indoor and outdoor use. Available in red, yellow, green, blue and white, this ninefoot rope of lights provides up to 200,000 hours of bulb life, and looks great wrapped around columns on a front porch or lining a walkway leading up to a house. Over at Art Knapp Plantland on King George Boulevard, the decorating gurus have set up an entire corner of the store to display the huge range of lights and accessories they have available this holiday season. The Starlight Spheres are sure to be a popular decor item; available in six colours, these luminous balls of mini-lights create a stunning glow, and are perfect for hanging from a porch or tree either indoors or out. Art Knapp also has a large array of everpopular snowglobes, ranging from the more traditional snowman or santa globes, to unique, brightly coloured rocket-shaped globes. You can also add a little holiday sparkle to a vase or potted planter with LED lighted see page 16

from page 14 branches, which are 30-inches long, run on battery power and add just the right amount of brightness to any room. The team over at Potters – with several locations on the Peninsula, including their well-known Christmas Store on 192 Street – is also gearing up for a merry and bright holiday season with plenty of unique lighting items. New to the store this year, and expected to be a hot-ticket item, are tiny button lights that come in six different colours and shine four times brighter than regular LEDs. You’ll also want to check out the LED flameless candles at Potters – these candles have an internal timer, so you simply turn it on the first time, the lifelike flicker will turn off after five hours, and it will turn on automatically at the same time the next day. Earlier this month, the staff at Potters put the finishing touches on their computerized light show at their Christmas store. The show is set to run nightly from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. until Christmas Eve, and visitors can tune into 105.5 FM on their car stereo to listen to the music that accompanies the light show. More info can be found online at www.pottersonline.ca When it comes to using lights in or outside of your home, safety is of the utmost importance, from the initial set up throughout the holiday season. The following safety tips are courtesy of BC Hydro and, when followed, will help ensure a safe and problem-free holiday season: • Use Canadian Standards Association (CSA)-approved lights, cords, plugs and sockets that are
marked for outdoor use or wet locations. • Avoid using extension cords by installing a separate weatherproof circuit for holiday lighting. Place the circuit under the eaves, with a switch at your door. • Make sure outdoor circuits are equipped with an approved, weather-proof ground fault circuit interrupter. • Ensure the circuit breakers and fuses on your holiday lights circuit are no larger than 15 amperes. • Do not overload circuits. Have no more than 1400 watts on a circuit. If other lights in the house dim when the holiday lighting is turned on or the plug is very hot when unplugged, your circuit is overloaded. • Before you put light strings on a shrub, tree or your house, check for breaks or signs of insulation deterioration. Frayed cords or loose connections indicate that the wiring is poor. Replace any defective sets. • Never install lights with the power on. Test lights first, then unplug to install. • Keep electrical connections off the ground. Use eave clips or insulated staples, rather than nails and tacks, to hold light strings in place. • Keep wiring clear of metal parts such as ornamental railings and drainpipes, to prevent any risk of shock from an electrical current. • Be sure to turn off your holiday lights before going to bed, and never leave lights on when you are away from home, unless they are connected to a timer or photocell. • Do not leave your outdoor lights up year-round. Cords and bulbs will deteriorate, reducing their safety and shortening their life.

All the best toys for girls and boys W
hile Santa's elves are hard at work up in the North Pole building all sorts of toys for those on the 'nice' list, toy stores on the Semiahmoo Peninsula are also gearing up for the most exciting time of year. If you've got little ones on your list this holiday season, you'll want to pay close attention as local experts weigh in on the latest and greatest in toys. Down at Crescent Beach Toys on Beecher Street, owner Phil Lipton has a wide range of toys for kids of all ages and interest levels. One trend Phil has noticed is the push towards toys that are fun and also educational, and for that type of gift he recommends a new science line in store called SmartLab. Proving "it's fun to be smart," these science kits – appropriate for ages six and up – come in engaging, bright colours and many include glow-in-the-dark components as well. Some of these kits even have a bit of the "gross" factor – which many kids find tons of fun – and include in-depth, scientific looks at body parts, whereas another includes a programmable 'ReCon' rover.

Phil Lipton, owner of Crescent Beach Toys on Beecher Street, has fun and unique gift ideas for kids of all ages – including kids of the grown-up variety. For boys who are a little older, Phil recommends the R/C Gecko a hugely popular gravity-defying remote controlled car. You won't believe your eyes when you see this car speed up walls and across ceilings – similar to its namesake, the gecko – an amazing feat made possible by high-speed fans that create a powerful suction force.
And because race cars are a great bet for boys and girls alike, Phil also suggests Marble Racers. Similar to the ever-popular hot wheels, these clear plastic cars come with a builtin marble that lights up and spins when the car is tapped. Each car comes with a set of stickers for decoration and a glow-in-the-dark track set is also
available. A new line of eco-friendly items has also recently arrived at Crescent Beach Toys from a Thailand-based company called Wonder World. Made of 70 per cent recycled rubber tree, there's a wide variety of wood games, kitchens, puzzles, trucks and dollhouse items available. Also preparing for the hustle and bustle of a busy Christmas season is Sandy Smith and the team at Cotton 'N' Crayon Children's Wear and Toys in Ocean Park. According to Sandy, over the past few years they have seen a huge surge in popularity of puzzles and games with everyone from young children to adults. Cotton 'N' Crayon has a great selection of puzzles, including the Cobble see page 29

Rochells Jewellers Christmas Collection up to
James Maclennan photos
At Cotton 'N' Crayon Children's Wear and Toys, puzzles, games and cars are hot items this season, as well as the always popular Calico Critters (below).
Engaging creativity from page 28 Hill Christmas puzzle and the Ravensburger Christmas puzzle. In the world of imagination play toys, Calico Critters are yet again among the most popular choices. These small, soft and adorable woodland creatures are available in a variety of different animals – including rabbits, squirrels and cats – and can be paired with dollhouses and furnishings to appeal to a young one's imaginative side. A new building toy that Sandy recommends this year is called Zoob, made up of various bright pieces that can snap, click and pop together in a variety of different ways. Zoob pieces come in different quantity sizes, and there are also special Zoob creations, including a Zoob Bot, Zoob Alien Creature and Zoob Dude. Another popular item, for dads as well as their kids, is Automoblox, the classic wooden car that's been 'reinvented' with a mix of modern design and old-fashioned values. Many of the vehicles' parts are interchangeable, and come in a variety of styles, colours and designs. And always a safe bet for kids of all ages are arts and crafts. Cotton 'N' Crayon carries a number of great Melissa and Doug brand craft toys, and they also have a huge variety of non-structured art products, including colour pads, paints, crayons and smencils (smelly pencils made of recycled newspapers). At Alice Toys in Semiahmoo
Shopping Centre, manager Evelina Bobrov says one of their best-selling items – popular not just for kids but adults, too – are Perfect Petz. Plush, life-like cats and dogs sleep and breathe just like real pets. These adorable furry friends provide the experience of real pet ownership without all the hassle and expense. For babies and toddlers ages zero to 36 months, Alice Toys carries a popular line of plush toys called Lilliputiens. Created in Belgium, these brights critters are all hypoallergenic and certified to meet European quality standards. An educational option for kids as young as two, Evelina recommends Quercetti, a mosaic puzzle that helps develop hand-eye coordination and find motor skills as well as encourage creative thinking. Bruder trucks, made in Germany of tough, phthalate-free plastic are a great choice for kids over two, and include an incredibly realistic snow plow with refillable sand tank and on/off lever. For inquisitive kids who are a little older, Alice Toys has an interactive world map, that includes 1,000 fun facts and questions about countries around the globe. And for the tough-tobuy-for tween crowd, Evelina suggests Pawparazzi – plush pets living big celebrity lives. These collectable pets, play sets and accessories each come with their own celebrity personality promoted in a gossip magazine or website created just for these popular critters.

Gifts for the great outdoors T
here’s no question we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, with endless opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors. And although we may be entering the season of cold, wet weather here on the West Coast, that’s not enough to stop many outdoor enthusiasts from enjoying nature’s playground in their own backyard. If you have one of these rambunctious recreation lovers on your list, you won’t have to go far to find them unique — not to mention practical – for under the Christmas tree this year. One of the most popular outdoor activities this time of year is skiing and snowboarding, and with a great season of snow predicted for the local mountains, what better year to wrap up some downhill accessories? Over at Pacific Boarder on King George Boulevard, manager Chris says there are plenty of items to choose from, big and small, that any ski or snowboard lover would be thrilled to receive. Goggles make a great gift, and the huge trend right now is for larger-fitting goggles that allow
James Maclennan photos
From a new bicycle, like this one from South Surrey Cycles, to snowboarding accessories (below) from Pacific Boarder, there are plenty of gift options for the recreation lover on your list this year. for greater vision. Another item that has really gained popularity the past few seasons according to Chris is helmets – once thought of as just for newbies to the slopes, but now embraced by novices and pros alike. “It used to be the minority wearing helmets, but now everybody is wearing one,” Chris said. “They come in a variety of different shapes, sizes and paint jobs.” A unique item that combines recreation and technology – which Chris said has been a “huge seller” the past few seasons – is the Go Pro camera. It’s a small, high-definition video camera that you can mount onto your helmet or the handlebars of a mountain bike and captures all the excitement from the rider’s point-of-view. When it comes to snowboards, popularity has started to shift to reverse camber, or ‘rockered’ boards, that flare up at the tip and tail and provide a more catch-free approach to riding. Pacific Boarder also has a wide selection of outerwear – ranging from oversized, baggy items to more skinny cuts with an “urban street appeal.” If it’s a fitness buff on your list, the team over at Peninsula Runners on 152 Street have got you covered. Always well-stocked with the latest and greatest in runners and apparel, now’s a great time to check out some rain and winter gear to help the die-hard runner get through the season without missing a beat. Another great gift idea for this time of year comes from the medical side of the running world – portable, handy devices that can help warm up muscles in colder weather and break up lactic acid. Peninsula Runners carries two types – The Stick and the Grid Roller. The Stick comes in a variety of sizes and flexibilities, depending on the need, and is easily portable for travel or easy storage. The Grid Roller is made of EVA foam and comes in different densities, and is designed to withstand heavy, repeated use without breaking down. EIther of these innovative and useful items are sure to be well-received by runners of all experience levels this holiday season. With no shortage of cycling enthusiasts on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, there are also plenty of great gift ideas to keep the wheels turning all-
year round. Safety is of the utmost importance, especially this time of year, according to Barry of South Surrey Cycles. For all-season bike commuters, the 152 Street store has plenty of rain and winter gear, as well as flashing lights for visibility and fenders to keep the rain at bay. If it’s a youngster you’re shopping for, there are also a wide range of bikes for all levels available – a gift that Barry said is a wonderful alternative to video games, which don’t encourage much exercise and activity. Starting with pre-bikes for the little ones just learning to ride, to tricycles and finally bikes with training wheels, the options really open up once young bike-riders graduate to two-wheels only. With a trend towards people getting into longdistance biking, as well as seniors starting to reacquaint themselves with the hobby of biking, there is plenty of opportunity to find the perfect bike or bike accessory this year. No matter what activity the outdoor enthusiast on your list likes to partake in, staying warm and dry this winter is of the utmost importance, and Mountain Magic at Sunnyside Village has plenty to do just that. With a large selection of water-proof, breathable garments and insulated clothing, your loved ones will stay toasty warm no matter what adventure they’re embarking on. Particularly popular are items made of Merino wool – a light, warm, breathable and comfortable material – which Mountain Magic carries a number of items in, including men’s and women’s long johns, bottoms, tops and socks. Though it may not be high on the ‘exciting-gift list,’ you can also find a number of earthquake preparedness supplies, including water tablets, emergency tents, pocket stoves, space blankets, water-proof matches and much more. Mountain Magic is also a great place to find unique and useful stocking stuffer items, including a popular winter lip balm called Snik, made with avocado oil, Swiss Army Knives, gloves, toques and much more. A popular new item is known as ‘Buff,’ a multipurpose piece of headgear that can be worn as a neck warmer, head warmer or bandana.

Sharing the joy of a four-legged friend What to know before you put a pet under the tree this Christmas
A
nyone who has a pet knows that there is nothing better than the unconditional love they receive from their furry friend. For those looking to give the gift of a pet, there are many things that should be mulled over before taking the big step. Megan Ferris, owner of Dog Utopia on 24 Avenue, suggests people look into alternatives before purchasing a pet for someone else, as many reputable breeders want to meet the owner before selling animals. However, for someone who is getting a pet for a loved one or even for themselves, there are some considerations. Avoid pet stores when shopping for a dog, said Ferris. Instead, opt for a reputable breeder after figuring out what breed would be best suited for the home. According to No Puppy Mills Canada website, a reputable breeder takes responsible care of all of his or her dogs, providing nutritious quality dog food, clean water, immunization, proper vet care, parasite prevention and treatment, grooming, exercise, socialization and companionship. A breeder should belong to a national and/or local breed club and abide by the club’s code of ethics. Some of the Canadian Kennel Club’s golden rules for finding a reputable breeder include: Visiting the kennel and letting your eyes, ears and nose be the judge. Make certain to have full access to the kennel to see if conditions are clean, dogs have ample space and are well-cared for. Making certain the dam (mother) is on the premises and available to see. According to the CKC, this is an absolute must. Before taking home any pet, and especially dogs, it is important to ask to see the health certificates and records of visits to the veterinarian. A reputable breeder will have established a breeding program dramatically reducing or eliminating the possibility of inherited health disorders in their dogs, according to the CKC. A reputable breeder will also provide a written guarantee that the dog is healthy, both physically and mentally. A guarantee will cover the recompense in the case of a problem but it is not an assurance that a problem will never occur.
Becoming a SAINT Senior Animals In Need Today (SAINTS) is an animal sanctuary for older animals who would otherwise spend their twilight years lonely and in kennels. Located in Mission, B.C. SAINTS provides a home and care for senior animals and is always looking for people to adopt or foster animals. Since December 2004, SAINTS has had more than 400 animals come through its doors. More than 130 have been adopted. And for those who are unable to take on the responsibility of a pet, there is the option of sponsoring an animal with monthly donations to help with its medical costs. For more information, go to http://www. saintsrescue.ca/index.htm

If you are planning to move, go to school or are not home frequently, this may not be a good time. Pets need stability and routine to feel secure. Consider your future plans and evaluate if a pet will fit in with those plans. Stability: Are my living arrangements suitable? All members of the household should be in agreement of the pet you choose. Also if you are renting make sure it is okay with your landlord. Do you have enough space for the pet you are considering? Most animals don’t need a lot of room but some will require more than others. Time: Do I have the time for a pet? Different animals will require different amounts of your time. The amount of activity you do, the amount of time you are home and what to do when you go away are all factors to consider when choosing a pet. You need to provide a minimum of an hour a day of active play and walks for your dog or cat. Cost: Can I afford a pet? The cost of pet care varies but expect the average dog to cost about $1000 per year and a cat about $800. All pets require an annual visit to the veterinarian. There will also be visits due to illness or accidents and preventative care (fleas, heartworm). To find out more about adoption and if a pet is right for you, visit www.spca.bc.ca

Deals also has a stunning new array of glass plate wear and candle holders in sparkling silver and red, ranging in price from $4.98 to $14.98. fun and festive window snowakes ($12) and a white ceramic deer ($21). Even with all these great, inexpensive gift ideas so close to home, choosing the right gift for a workplace exchange still requires a little bit of extra thought. Here are some tips to ensure your workplace Secret Santa goes off without a hitch: • Stay within the dollar limit stated (most ofďŹ ces choose between $10 to $20) • Find out the person’s hobbies and try to buy a gift that appeals to what they enjoy most. • While you don’t have to go overboard with the gift-wrap, be sure to wrap it in something (a plastic or paper bag doesn’t count). • Avoid gag gifts, as co-workers may not have the same sense of humour and could easily take offense to something considered ‘taboo’. • While homemade items are nice for close friends or family, it may be viewed as too personal for the workplace setting. Baked holiday goodies to share with the whole ofďŹ ce, however, will almost always be well-received. • When in doubt, gift cards to a coffee shop or bookstore are always a safe bet. Though half the fun of workplace gift exchanges is trying to ďŹ nd something your co-worker will like, if you’re really stuck, a gift card could save the day.
