Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild, Women at War! Written by Diane
We are fortunate at the Saltdean Townswomen’s Guild to have been able to source some amazing speakers over the last few months since Covid struck!

Our Programme Organiser Elaine has done a great job and our speakers range from old-time medicine, local history and most recent was a wonderful lady in full costume who talked to us about the life of a “First World War Nurse” and the many roles that women filled at that time.
Sarah Helen Snow gave us insights into the work women did during the war and how they coped with the hardships, with little medication, or even hospitals. Many large country houses and estates were turned into recuperation units and took the injured from field hospitals, in the hopes that with the care of the nurses the soldiers would eventually recover. We were also given the opportunity to view her extensive records and pictures and see what a nurse would have had to deal with.
At the time of writing, with yet another war in Europe, we all are thinking “What can I do?”, lets’ hope that our government provides what is needed and that the Red Cross will be able to take our donations to those in such great need. Saltdean Guild is a group of women of various ages, we are welcoming and inclusive and we will welcome you. Apart from visiting speakers, we have social events, and guild activities such as the Lunch Club, Games and Canasta afternoons, Natural Health and Wellbeing Group and we are always open to new activities. We are looking for a leader to organise a walking group, is that you? If you are not yet a member please come and join us at our monthly meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at St. Martin’s Church Hall, Longridge Avenue, Saltdean at 2:00 pm and connect with local women!
