Preventing, managing & understanding

anxiety in children To worry about things is very normal. To be concerned about things is very normal. To feel anxious about things is very normal and quite necessary for our survival as human beings. Through anxiety, we learn ways to deal with stressful situations and strategies to cope with things that happen spur of the moment. These are vital experiences for growing up and living successfully in the big wide world!

BUT…. to excessively worry about EVERYTHING, ALL of the time AND to only be a young child is an experience that is becoming more and more common amongst our children of today.

Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Phobias. When suffering anxiety, children may seem unhappy, on edge, upset/ crying, fearful, quiet, tired, clingy, emotionally fragile, off their food, sick in the tummy and experience headaches. Some children may misbehave, lash out, become angry or violent, frustrated or feel deflated.

Children as young as 5 years of age are experiencing anxiety which is affecting their ability to live a normal, happy life; Anxiety which is beyond the normal range of childhood worries or fears. It is at this point that specific tools and strategies can benefit children in developing healthy emotional resilience.

It can be difficult for children to understand WHY they are feeling any or all of these emotions, which can confuse them even further, reinforcing their already negative, self-talk. Of course, every child is different and all changes in behaviours need to be considered. It can also be a very traumatic time for parents of ‘little worriers’ , often raising their anxiety levels too, making them feel like they are the only family to be impacted by a young child’s anxiety – but they are NOT alone.

There are many types of anxiety disorders including Generalised

At just 5 years old my son was diagnosed with GAD (Generalised

Anxiety Disorder). Here began my journey to help and encourage him to learn to identify, manage and beat his worry thoughts. Using CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) techniques of ‘externalisation’ and ‘change your thoughts to change your feelings’ concepts, I was able to help him understand the negative nature of worry thoughts and assist him in maintaining his inner strength by teaching him to focus on his happy thoughts. In order to explain these CBT concepts at the appropriate level for

a young child, I used my experience as a primary school teacher to write an inspired story and my artistic skills to design essential illustrations. With these important components I created two very successful children picture story books “Go Away, Mr Worrythoughts!” and “Happythoughts are Everywhere...” The journey of publishing these two books has helped many families dealing with anxiety in children. By sharing our own personal story we have given others a much needed insight into some successful tools

and strategies and in turn assisted many other ‘little worriers’ take control of their own worry thoughts and help them overcome the constraints of anxiety. Here are some simple strategies that may be able to help both parents and their ‘little worriers’..... Strategies for Parents: • Establish a simple vocab to use with the children, to help them explain and understand their feelings ‘a worry tummy’ (knot or butterflies) ‘fast feeling’(Heart pounding) ‘bad feeling’ (concern about something) • Model positive ways to manage different feelings. Using words to express own feelings (cross, upset, worried etc...) and actions (taking some ‘time out’ to calm down) to help children identify their own feelings and apply management strategies. • Encourage talking, take the time to listen. Understand that their experience of anxiety is very real and uncontrollable, no matter how minor the worry thought may seem. • Create a Feelings Level Chart – helps (Both parent and child) identify the levels of anxiety such as... Level 1 – a negative thought Level2 – physical feeling associated with thought Level3 – Controlled anxiety starting to set in Level4 – Uncontrollable feelings of anger, sadness, and reactive action Level5 – Melt Down (can’t retreat now; just have to hang on for the ride...)

Describing anxiety to someone who hasn’t experienced it is like describing a colour that hasn’t been seen. Quite often for children, the difficulty communicating what they are experiencing is in the lack of their own understanding, self evaluation and their limited language. By practising these simple techniques, hopefully both parents and children can learn to manage worry thoughts in a positive way and continue to live their lives happy and free. Preparing for Prep As we enter a new year, there are a whole cohort of little ones, 4-5 year old children who are about to embark on their school journey. Many will be very excited about the idea of school but may find the first day a little emotional and overwhelming.

• In the week leading up to the start of the school year, start your child in a school routine. Get up at the time your child will need to for school, have breakfast, clean teeth and get dressed. Eat morning tea and lunch at the time your child will eat at school.

In order to help our children adjust to this next big stage of their life, there are a number of things, you as a parent can do to make this a smooth transition with as fewer bumps and tears as possible.

• In the lead up to school, take your child for a walk around their school. Visit their classroom, where they will eat, where they will play, where the toilets are and where you will wait for them at the end of the day. Have a play in the playground before you go home.

Here is a checklist to ensure that your child is prepared and ready for a great year in Prep.

18

• Ensure your child can write their name or at least recognize their name. If

www.connect2mums.com.au

they cannot yet write their full name in the lead up to school and during the first term, help your child practice writing their name.

with pictures what needs to be done – eating breakfast, brushing teeth, getting dressed, putting shoes on, packing bag etc.

• Allow your child to wear their uniforms. Children are so excited to get their new uniforms and it is useful for them to get used to wearing them. Make sure they can pull down and pull up their shorts, tuck their shirt in (if required by school), take off and put on their socks and shoes (Velcro shoes are the best shoes for Prep students)

• Develop a good sleep routine. Young children need a good night sleep and in the first few months they will be very tired. I think it is really important to prepare them and to make their first year at school a fun and positive experience. Article written by Jodie Maher, mother of 3 boys, Primary teacher and owner of Kids Learning is Fun. Visit her at www. kidslearningisfun. com.au

• Have a talk with your child about going to the toilet. Let them know they only need to ask their teacher (usually by putting up their hand) if they need to go. Usually in the first few weeks Prep teachers will take the whole class at varied times of the day to help the children begin to understand the routine. • If your child is worried about possible accidents or you think they might have an accident, pack a spare pair of underwear and shorts in a plastic bag in their school bag. Let them know it is there just in case, reassuring them. • In the week leading up to school, pack their school lunch and eat morning tea and lunch together. While eating together talk about the foods you eat for morning tea and what you should eat for lunch. This time together will also help you see whether you child is able to unwrap and open all the containers and packets within their lunch box. Make sure your child’s lunch is healthy and falls within the school guidelines. • Organise your morning routine – get your child used to what needs to be done on a school morning. You may even use a morning chart showing them

Digital life

Cyber Safety Keeping your kids safe online

How Soon Should You Start Thinking About Cyber Safety For Your Kids? The answer is...as soon as your children are exposed to any mobile internet device, Phone, computers or console games. Mobile phones, Xboxes, iPads, laptops, iPods these are all internet accessible computers too. All of these have access to adult content online, unless set up with filters. Accessing the internet even 5 years ago was difficult on a phone, now its just so easy we all do it even without knowing it!

20

So what do you do? If you are one of those mums that hand your child the smart phone to play with at the DR’s or Cafe, your child is already at risk of being exposed to adult content online. All computers and mobile devices

www.connect2mums.com.au

can be set up to be relatively safe for children, with supervision. You can do this without disrupting your own use and having to bypass locks or firewalls.

Firewalls and Virus Software First ensure all your computers and modem have their firewalls switched on, and check your anti virus software is up to date and on! This will prevent sticky fingers from unwittingly downloading a virus that will render your computers totally useless... I recommend installing OpenDNS software on your Modem. It not only blocks undesirable websites on your home computers but also does it for any mobile device that connects to your home Wi Fi. Some parents think they have it all covered when someone’s little darling comes to visit and brings an iPod, and Bingo, your child is exposed to unfiltered internet.

Most Children Find Adult Content By Mistake! Children don’t usually go looking for porn or adult content on the internet...they stumble across it. By innocently putting a search term in google and coming up with something they never expected. They may use a parents computer who has been accessing porn, and

they find a website through browser history, or popups... A friend of mine’s 10 year old was doing a project on Guide Dogs, and Googled “Woman with a Dog” to get a picture to use...well you can guess the rest.

Where Are These Filters? Every browser, search engine, and every computer and apple mobile device, has safety filters, the developers don’t make them easy to find, but look for them they are there, in settings or options or on the page. YouTube have just released a website just for education which you can allow through your firewall for older kids at least.

Education And Open Discussion Is Best The best way to educate your children about safe and responsible use of computers is to set up a separate parental controlled login just for them. You can do this in both Windows and on Mac. You can then control what programs they use and websites they visit.

Supervision Is Key! Right from the time your child picks up your iPhone, until they are in their late teens you will have to supervise very carefully on

www.connect2mums.com.au

21

all computer devices and gaming consoles. No amount of safety filters and Net Nanny blocks will totally protect them unfortunately. When they go to a friends house where these securities are NOT set up, your child may have to make a decision weather to play that MA15+ game or to bow out. You might find this hard to believe but kids that are brought up to understand why they shouldn’t play MA15+ games when underage, have been known to tell their hosts that they are not allowed to play that game and suggest to they play something else. I have heard that numerous times from my own kids and other parents.

Keep Talking And Keep Playing! Keep the lines of communication honest and open, and remember that kids love games! They love TV they love cartoons, computers and mobile devices are so much fun! As developers get better and better at creating interactive content the more fun and delight kids will experience playing them. So as their parent or carer you had better get educated about what is a suitable game for your child and what is not! One way to keep the lines of communication open is to play

22

games with them! “Words with Friends” or “Club Penguin” Don’t be a luddite or they will not confide in you when they need to. Talk about this with your friends, ask at your local game store for recommendations, and don’t just trust the classification ratings on computer games, they are not accurate and very inconsistent. Most importantly, keep the computers in a family area where you can constantly have an ear out and an eye out to know exactly what they are experiencing online! “The one thing my pregnant friends and I discussed at length was stretch marks – once you’ve got them, they’re there for good! I used Bio-Oil throughout, morning, noon and night... in fact, I haven’t stopped using it since Liam’s birth. Now that I’m pregnant with twins, I’m going to be using it more than ever! Whether you love it or loathe it, the summer season means bearing a little more skin and surviving higher temperatures. But just because the weather can be daunting, summer fashion doesn’t have to be. This summer, there are some great options for keeping cool, keeping covered, and looking stylish. It’s fair to say that dresses are everywhere this summer. Long, short, maxi, midi; whatever your length of choice, there’s a dress for you. Dresses are great because you don’t have to worry about how to mix and match the right top and bottom. A dress is almost an entire outfit already

put together- all you need to think about are the shoes and accessories. Dresses are also perfect because they keep you cool in warm weather, particularly when made of natural fibres (or blends) like linen, cotton or silk. The maxi dress is a particular favourite of summer 11/12, though there are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to choosing a maxi dress for your shape. You may have heard that maxi

www.connect2mums.com.au

33

Oriri by Sacha Drake

dresses are no good for petite woman. Not true. The key to wearing a maxi dress that doesn’t swamp you is to choose one with some shape. Look for styles that accentuate the waist with some banding or built-in elastic, rather than drop from the bust. You can do this yourself with a waist belt. Regardless of your height, a maxi dress should fall to the floor (or as close to it as you can) with shoes on. Treat summer maxi’s as a fairly casual option, and leave the patent stilettos for the office or cocktail party. Wedges and espadrilles are a more appropriate option, as are flat strappy sandals.

34

Like to mix and match your separates to create a variety of outfits? Then the maxi skirt is another great option this summer. Much like the maxi dress, the maxi skirt works just as well for petite and taller women; it’s all about the proportions. Full skirts should be teamed with a fitted top, preferably tucked in or worn with a belt to accentuate the waist. Follow the same length and shoe rule as above. Petites and women with heavier set hips and bum should avoid thick pleats; leave these styles to taller women and those with more boy-like hips and thighs. Look for fabric which doesn’t cling but rather drapes nicely to the floor which will hide and camouflage the thighs. And the best thing about a maxi? You can go all summer without shaving or tanning your legs!

This summer’s espadrille has a more modern look than the original casual, flat soled style from the Pyrenees. Sporting a canvas or cotton fabric upper and a wedged sole made of rope,

www.connect2mums.com.au

this modern espadrille works perfectly with a maxi dress and skirt. More casual than a leather wedge, the espadrille looks great teamed with summer dresses (long or short) tailored shorts and cropped jeans. And because most modern espadrilles have a platform sole, they’re very comfortable to wear. Once the domain of resorts and poolside only style, the kaftan offers a fresh alternative to the traditional summer cover-up and is the ultimate in fuss-free dressing. Whether it’s thrown on over bathers or worn with minimalist heels and beaded accessories, the kaftan can take you from pool to party. The key is to choose a style that doesn’t actually look like a beach coverup, even though you could use it for this if you wanted to. A kaftan made of fabric that isn’t transparent will offer more versatility than one you can see your knickers through. Much like the maxi dress, the kaftan is best suited for more informal occasions and best teamed with a casual wedge or sandal. Perfect however for the party season when temptations can lead to a fuller stomach than usual.

Regardless of what you choose to wear this summer, don’t be afraid to go for bright colours and bold prints. And if you like to play it safe, accessories are a great way to add some colour and take that maxi dress or kaftan from day to night. Beauty:

Creating a fresh look for summer

42

www.connect2mums.com.au

So summer is finally here ! I absolutely LOVE summer time, and love to embrace the fact that I can wear less makeup in summer. We change our wardrobes for each season, so its a good idea to change your make up to match. During winter we tend to wear thicker fabrics, darker colours and get get away with stronger makeup colours, more eye makeup and and generally a more “ Made Up “ look. In summer its all about looking and feeling, light and, radiant and healthy. We tend to wear much softer fabrics, and are showing off more skin so your makeup is best worn in this style also. Summer for 2012 will bring a toned down version of the vibrant colours that were seen last summer. A hint of colour is perfectly off set with minimal look with the overall effect. My number one rule is to have one area of focus. Its best to choose either you eyes or your lips to stand out, not both. For example if you are wearing a

bright coral lippy, go nude of the eyes, with one coat of mascara. This will ensure your lips get the attention.

My tips for fast easy summer makeup : 1.Create your perfect base with primer Applying primer is my absolute first step to beautiful, long lasting makeup. This is especially important in the summer months when you need to keep makeup in place. Apply your primer to clean dry skin. Avoid putting any creams, serums or other beauty products underneath your primer. Layering too many creams. will only make it more difficult for your makeup at stick to your skin, rather than slide off during the day. Most primers are also light moisturizers, so they are really all you need prior to your foundation. 2. Go for natural looking foundation by ditching your full coverage makeup to a tinted

www.connect2mums.com.au

43

moisturizer. This will give you sheer dewy coverage, however you can still use concealer under your eyes or on any other areas that need a little hiding.

The added benefit is that it will also contain sunscreen, to protect your skin through out the day. 3. Use cream blush instead of powder on your cheeks Using a cream or gel blush on your cheeks will give your skin an instant boost. Rose or peach colours work beautifully in summer and will give you that slightly ‘flushed look. This is far more natural, than applying a heavily powdered blush AND will take 10 years off you ! They can be a bit tricky to get used to, but practice makes perfect . Take a small amount of gel/cream on your ring fingers, dab on your

44

cheeks and softly pat up and outwards. Blend, Blend Blend! 4. Get your lashes tinted for maximum ease and impact Who wants dark, long, defined lashes for 6 weeks at a time? Eyelash tinting is one of my all time favorite beauty treatments. Is fast, effective and better still, inexpensive. Having your lashes tinted is just like having the hair on your head colored. I will take around 20 minutes, and will cost approx $15 - 20. The result is that you will be able to throw away the mascara, yet still have beautiful dark lashes, with no fuss for approx the next 5 - 6 weeks. This is ideal if you are going away or spending loads of time swimming and at the beach. You can still keep a bit of glam, but with no panda eyes. :) Waterproof Mascara is a must for staying gorgeous in the heat Ok, so the lash tint is great for the the beach, but if your going out or getting extra glammed up you may still want to wear mascara. In keeping with the light makeup, only apply one coat. This will keep your makeup still looking soft and natural.

www.connect2mums.com.au

If its an extremely hot day/ evening, be sure to use waterproof mascara. Even a tiny bit of sweat can ruin your mascara. Tip - Make sure you use a waterproof mascara to remove

it when cleansing your skin at night.

I use Blistex intensive care lip gloss during the day and even when I go to bed at night as a conditioner for my lips. Its a great all round lip gloss as its conditioning, and protecting your lips, but still has loads of SHINE. For a more made up look, always define your lips first with a lip liner, then apply your gloss over the top. I choose to go with gloss over lipstick in summer as it has more of the wet look. A perfect match for your dewy cheeks and lightly tinted summer skin.

5. Use bronzer for a sun kissed glow. Need a little extra glow? Try using a small amount of bronzer on all the high points on your face. These are all the areas your face would natural pick up a bit of colour. Cheeks, temples, nose, forehead. Avoid going crazy with the bronzer as you can end of making your skin look dirty rather than gently sun kissed. I love Napoleons Mosaic Bronzer with a large fluffy brush. 6. Taking care of your lips in summer is a must. Days spent out in the sun can lead to coldsores and burnt chapped lips.

Supporting emerging rs mumpreneu

With my background in graphic design, photography, people management and small business, I knew I had the skills to start something of my own. At the time, I had no idea how big it would become. My story starts 18 months ago when I jumped off the cliff and resigned from my stable, well paid day job. Yes it was scary but the rush it gave me was intense. I started out designing and making a small girls wear label. After realising that girls wear was a very saturated market, I designed a teen boys street wear label in hopes of hitting a target market that was in demand. But

now came the fun part, how to get them out there and sold. I made a couple of websites and then tried out a few markets only to find that I was going backwards and any sales I did make only covered the stall price, but I chocked that up to marketing and continued researching. I chatted to all the stall holders to find out what I needed to be doing to

47

the selling and marketing. Hey there were no kids hanging off my ankles yet so who else better to do it?

sell effectively. It seemed they were all struggling too. More to the point, most of them were work at home mums, not only juggling a new business but also a family! Having not started a family of my own just yet, I was astounded that they worked so hard and earned so little for their efforts. I decided then and there that I was going to have to create a new alternative to help them sell their products at a DECENT price, without any upfront costs (so it was zero risk) and without them having to be the one doing

48

My original long term goal for myself was to a have store of my own, designing and sewing in the shop front on full display for my customers to see. But after budgeting it out, there was no way it would work. Especially seeing as I was just one designer. But wait, if there were 100 of us, now that could work! Customers would be very interested in visiting a store with so much choice. And by limiting it to Aus and NZ designers, I would have a point of difference from all the other children’s products stores in Melbourne. From what I could tell there was nothing of this scale in Oz or NZ. From my earlier research into retail stores, I knew that a larger space was comparatively not much more expensive than the smaller stores. I dreamed up a floor plan that included a kid friendly cafe, a kids play area, baby change and feed area, a party room, a photo studio and gallery along with some space for designers to rent if they were ready for their own design studio. I set my brain into business mode and hashed out all the costs, skills needed and hours involved and it all seemed to work. I did a quick business

www.connect2mums.com.au

grant program to make sure my idea was viable and dove straight in. It started with an 8 page website and blog that I put together in one day. I then started the hunt for Australia and New Zealand’s best emerging designers. Within the first month I had over 2000 hits on the blog and lots of designers ready, willing and very keen to come on board. Next I needed to find a store which took a very long time and came down to the wire but eventually I found the perfect place with oodles of charm, lots of space and in the perfect area. We had just a little over 2 weeks to fit out the store, renovate the tired building, receive, barcode and display over 6000 products. We being my Mum and Dad, a few close friends and my new family of designers. They came from far and wide to help wherever they could, whether it was painting, fixing, cleaning or assembling, they dug in and helped and then thanked me for letting them be a part of this new venture. It was the hardest 2 weeks I think I will ever face. There were tears, blood and no shower for a week but finally we opened the doors and took a deep breath. It has only been 9 weeks since those doors opened yet

it feels like we’ve been here for years. One surprise bonus we have found has been our online community where the designers, photographers and I can chat privately. In our little virtual watercooler world, we network, ask questions, share triumphs and tragedies, not just in business but in life as well. For those who work at home and alone, it provides us with windows into each others lives and lets us know we are not alone, but rather a community of creatives, just hoping that the world will love us. Kids Style Hub is not mine, it belongs to us; the creatives who stock here, the customers who shop here and the kids that learn and play here. After all we are the ones who make it and shape it.

Macaroon Kids was formed after the birth of my son. No girly dresses for me, denim was the way to go! I started upcycling old denim jeans to fit my son and not only were they adorable but they fitted his nappy bottom perfectly. Coming from a sewing background and having studied my Diploma in Clothing and Textiles, designing practical and fun toys for my son was not a stretch. So the Pokey Puppy (a pun on my maiden name) was formed and is now the face of Macaroon Kids. Each item I create is individually sewn, with love for both children and the environment. I am dedicated to not only creating items that children love, but items that are stylish enough for any

mum to be proud to have in her home. I love children playing with handmade items and nurturing the love and respect for handcrafted items. I am very conscious of the environment so I keep this in mind with the choices I make with regards to the materials I use. I choose to purchase old denim from various charities which I support as I have a strong social conscious. I also love using something that no one wants and turning it into something cute and loveable. My son is the perfect model for me to use and road test each item I create, so as he grows so will my range. Macaroon Kids’ items can be found at Kids Style Hub.

Nog ‘n Piep is a celebration of my creative spirit and tenacity in which I create simple unique pieces. Nog ‘n Piep means to give cheer and always follows hip hip hooray! Designing and creating new pieces gives me joy and I aim for this emotion to come through into my work and the end goal would be to pass this onto my customers. With a move from the Textile industry as a designer and Product development, I have found joy in creating mix media decor products with a home spun feel. I have hand carved and stamped most of my designs and also love using different textures to be the hero of the piece. Part of my inspiration was when I left the work force four years ago to be a stay at home mom to my son Rourke. I met two other Moms who enjoyed being creative and together we started Nog ‘n Piep. We attended

a few outdoor markets and soon realised that our pieces were really well received and that we should build on our brand. So from a humble beginning Nog ‘n Piep grew from strength to strength. With my friends moving on to other things I have been running Nog ‘n Piep on my own for 2 years and have also had another baby. My daughter Myra is nearly 9 months old and she has given me loads more inspiration. I have been attending a few markets and have a website www.nognpiep.com As long as I can still squeeze in the time I will continue to create as Nog ‘n Piep is to me part of my wonderful and supportive family! ea L : l l e n n o C Cath

Cath started her eco-friendly paper communications business, Leaf, after inspiration struck her days before a redundancy from her marketing role in “Big Corporate”. These days, her passion for personal stories, great design, environmental issues, creative thinking and paper are her driving forces. Creating products that help kids find their voices, tap into their creativity and think for themselves is a major focus of her business at the moment. “Kids today need to reconnect with their inner lives, something not found by interacting with just technology”, says Cath. Products such as Leaf’s Story Starters and Kids Journals provide a little food for thought, without telling the whole story, allowing kids to fill in the gaps in whatever way appeals to them most. However, Leaf’s future is not just with

children’s products. Cath hopes to reinvigorate the art of personal story telling for all ages, building greater understanding and shared human experience, not to mention having some good belly laughs over a vino or two with friends. “We need to reconnect with the story teller within”, Cath says. “This is what connects us and helps us remain human in our crazy, modern life.” Cath’s greatest influences these days are found on her back doorstep. She lives on the side of a hill, with an awesome view and national park at the back. “I love looking out on the forest… it gives my thoughts a sense of space – of endless possibilities”, she says. Being the mother of an active 5 year old mountain goat might have some effect too! Leaf items can be found at Kids Style Hub.

Mums on a Mission

Meet the mums passionate about raising awareness of the preservatives and additives in our children’s food Every Parents Dream – Eating Safely came about when a group of four mums from WA decided to start up an online community where we discuss and share ideas on ‘safe’ and healthy eating. We believe health is vital to living, and being able to easily and regularly make good safe food choices enhances your health. We are passionate about the health of our children, and after realising that there are so many additives in our food that are harmful to our health, determined to do some more research and advocate for safe foods. We determined to stand up and share the knowledge we learnt with other parents to help them make informed

66

decisions about safe and healthy foods for their children. Safe and healthy food for children involves more than making sure kids “go for 2 and 5”, get lots of fibre, reduce sugar intake, lower fat intake and the myriad of other current advice available on children’s eating habits. Our community page is aimed to share knowledge and facilitate discussion on safe and healthy foods and to make it easy for families to eat safely, thereby protecting the health of our children. And hopefully we can help make shopping for safe foods easier, once you know which additives to avoid. Additives are found in all processed foods, but how do you know what the additives are? What if you need to avoid certain additives

www.connect2mums.com.au

due to health reasons? Have you noticed manufacturer’s tricks on their packaging, so that you think you don’t need to read the label? There is so much information on the internet about additives and there are many books on the market. Our community page aims to complement

these, and encourage parents and caregivers to think about what they are feeding their children, and to make better choices. So come and join us today at www.facebook.com/ safeshoppingmadeeasy Because our kids’ health matters.

When two sisters, both Mum’s to young boys, saw the need busy people had for a professional dog walking service, Spot the Dog WalkerTM was born. Not only does Spot The Dog Walker provide professional dog walking services for busy households, but they also provide local jobs for people who enjoy working outdoors, love animals and require flexible employment. And this perfectly sums up sisters Katrina Nelson and Lisa Nisbet who started Spot The Dog Walker in February 2011. “Lisa and I have always been close, but we’ve also lived in different cities and countries during our adult lives. Their approach to business is guided by Katrina’s strong background in business development, most recently of gas pipelines, and given a soft touch with Lisa’s experience working as an Occupational Therapist. While it’s a juggling act at times, they maintain high service standards and a thorough business model which guarantees client and staff satisfaction. The atmosphere among the team is relaxed and with a family feel, with interviews, inductions and training days generally occurring in local parks on picnic blankets with children playing by their sides. But it’s not just about the sisters. The business is built on a strong commitment to the health and wellbeing of animals, local communities, the environment and people. Being strong supporters of the RSPCA, Spot the Dog Walker donates to the RSPCA for every dog walk and most of our community marketing raises funds for the RSPCA.” Katrina said: “Our walkers are people with a predictable amount of availability during the week who would enjoy earning some extra money while getting exercise at the same time. Spot’s walkers include other small business owners, fit retirees, stay-at-home Mum’s or people lucky enough to have time available to spend with animals. Spot The Dog Walker has a rigorous recruitment process, with all walkerspolice-checked and veterinary-trained in basic pet first aid. Spot The Dog Walkers enjoy flexibility and independence as if working for themselves, without the cost and risk, but with the added benefit of

Clients are a broad lot, including people unable to walk their dogdue to injury or holidays, and busy people who don’t have much time during the week.“These clients tell us they enjoy coming home to find a contented pet, rather than a bored one who has dug holes in the yard or, worse still, chewed the furniture,” Lisa said. One client said: “I love the daily email reports, they are a great comfort and very much one of the points of difference that sets your business above the rest!” Another said: “I am so happy with the relationship that Nat and Tobi are developing.I am very glad that I started up with your dog walking service. Summer Reading Skyward by Mary Alice Monroe Skyward is a well written story by one of my new favourite authors, Mary Alice Monroe. Set at a Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Centre in southern USA, throughout the story you also get to know the resident birds and snippets of information about the owls, hawks, falcons and eagles of the region. An interesting array of characters take you on a journey into the world of 5 year old Marion and her lonely father Harris, and in true romantic drama style the breath of fresh air, Ella, who helps them to rebuild their life and teach them how to trust again. A great pick for light summer reading! Review by Peace Mitchell

The Secrets of Rosa Lee by Jodi Thomas This story from the outset had me wondering what the secret was, and I kept wondering almost till the end! A range of quirky but likeable characters tell the story bound together through unusual circumstances to determine the fate of the town’s oldest original homes. The mining companies want the land and a group of community members must determine whether the property should be kept for its historical value or destroyed in the name of progress. A mystery, a great cast of likeable characters, great writing and a sprinkling of romance made this an enjoyable book to read. Review by Peace Mitchell

The Midwife’s Confession by Dianne Chamberlain The Midwife’s confession written by Diane Chamberlain reads as a suspense drama. An unaddressed letter from a midwife that carries a 15 year secret is revealed. This is a story of two families and friends who are tested by the revelation of this secret. Tara, Emerson and Noelle are all college friends, but its bohemian styled Noelle the midwife who will test their lifelong friendship. So many characters all so fragile, everyone having their own issues to deal with. The author will take you for a rollercoaster ride with the twists and turns of this tale and the end you will never see coming. Review by Vicky Stephens
