Q-MUSIC: YOUR WINTER LGBTQ PLAYLIST BY GREGG SHAPIRO

THIS WINTER OF 2017/2018, WHETHER YOU’RE ALL BUNDLED UP AND TRUDGING THROUGH SNOW AND ICE OR WEARING BOARD SHORTS AND SOAKING UP THE SUN AT THE BEACH OR POOL, REMEMBER THAT MUSIC MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER. Before Linda Perry became the Grammy Awardwinning hit songwriter, record producer and wife of Sara Gilbert, she was the dreadlocked lead singer of the blues-rocking band 4 Non Blondes. There’s not much on 4 Non Blondes’ 1992 debut album Bigger, Better, Faster, More (Interscope/ UMe), newly reissued on 180-gram vinyl, to indicate that Perry was capable of writing hits such as “Beautiful” and “Get The Party Started” for Christina Aguilera and P!nk, respectively. In fact, the album’s lone massive hit single, “What’s Up,” qualified 4 Non Blondes for one-hit-wonder status. “Dear Mr. President”, another of the Perrypenned tunes on the album, is the other highlight.

Now in his seventh decade as a recording artist, the remarkable 82-year-old Johnny Mathis returns with The Great New American Songbook (Columbia). Throughout his career, Mathis gained a reputation for being a top-notch interpreter of other people’s songs. Co-produced by Clive Davis and Babyface, the disc features Mathis’ singular renditions of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” A Great Big World’s “Say Something,” Adele’s “Hello,” Pharrell’s “Happy” and the Josh Groban hit “You Raise Me Up,” to mention a few. 8 | 11.1.17

With her new Cuban-spiced album An American in Havana (susanwerner.com), singer/songwriter Susan Werner proves once again that there aren’t any musical genres she’s unable to master. Having established herself in the folk world, Werner turned her attention cabaret and jazz on I Can’t Be New, modern liberal spirituality on The Gospel Truth, contemporary classical on Classics and country on Kicking the Beehive and Hayseed. “1955 Chevy Bel Air” brings all of her songwriting chops, including her ability to pen marvelous lyrics, to the fore. “Havana Moon” is swoonworthy, “Cortadito” puts her fantastic sense of humor on display and “Stray Dogs” invites listeners to salsa to their heart’s content.

Since the release of their respective 2015 albums, the second for Torres and the first for Julien Baker, both artists have undergone musical transformations on their follow-up discs. On Three Futures (4AD), Torres (aka Mackenzie Scott) comes across like the kid sister of St. Vincent and Mitski. Sure, there were hints on Sprinter, including the song “Cowboy Guilt.” But the metamorphosis is complete for Torres on Three Futures, as is obvious on songs including the title track, “Tongue Slap Your Brains Out”, “Helen In The Woods”, “Greener Stretch”, “Concrete Ganesha”, “Bad Baby Pie”, and the near-epic electronic “To Be Given A Body”. There is an additional

accessibility to Torres’ music on a song such as “Righteous Woman.” Whereas Baker’s Sprained Ankle was a mostly acoustic guitar and vocal affair, Turn Out the Lights (Matador/6131) is more sumptuous. Fleshed out with piano, strings, woodwinds, and brass, and the guitars are plugged in, adding to the radiance of the music. Even Baker’s vocals have a luminescence, especially on the title tune, “Televangelist,” “Everything to Help You Sleep,” “Hurt Less” and “Appointments.”

Fire.” UK-based lesbian singer/songwriter Susie Wilkins rocks like nobody’s business on her new four-track EP She Got Me Good (susiewilkins.com). Titular opener kicks things off on a blistering note and “Fall To Pieces” lightens up the rock level. “Far Away” adds a gospel choir to the proceedings to get its message across.

If there’s any justice, Jeff Heiskell, former frontman of The Judybats, will get the recognition he has long deserved. The openly gay front-man of the aforementioned Tennessee-based band, a group that benefited from the popularity of the college rock and alternative music scenes, releasing four major-label albums, has been recording as Heiskell since putting out 2007’s Soundtrack for an Aneurism. The new Heiskell disc Emotional Terrorism (heiskellmusic. com) is as haunting as the title and cover image suggest. That’s meant to be a compliment because unforgettable songs such as “I Want More Life,” “Abandoned Property,” “Like We Used To,” “Waking Up” and the club-oriented “It’s Everything,” linger like musical ghosts. Benefiting the Tegan and Sara Foundation, whose mission is “fighting for economic justice, health and representation for LGBTQ girls and women,” The Con X: Covers (Vapor/Warner Brothers) features an all-star cast of artists commemorating the 10th anniversary of Tegan and Sara’s 2007 album The Con. As is often the case with covers or tribute albums, The Con X: Covers is a little uneven, but less so than others of its ilk. First and foremost, there is healthy representation by LGBTQ artists including MUNA (“Relief Next To Me”), Mykki Blanco (“Knife Going In”) and Shamir (“Like O, Like H”). There are also delightful surprises including performances by Ryan Adams (“Back In Your Head”), City and Colour (“Hop A Plane”), Sara Bareilles (“Floorplan”) and devout Christian artist Hayley Williams of Paramore (“Nineteen”).

No matter where you are this season, we all need to laugh (especially during the reign of Trump). Fabulous, “gay as hell” comedian Solomon Georgio nails it on Homonegro Superior (Comedy Central). An African immigrant, who “can say whatever the hell” he wants, because he’s “black and gay.” He takes us through the history of his name, his family’s immigration story, fashion faux pas, coming out at 18 to the world and his parents, culture clashes, porn stashes, society, homophobia and racism, his boyfriend, being “a professional homosexual”, straight men, and fisting, all the while making us think as we laugh.

A pair of bisexual divas have new albums. The new and improved Miley Cyrus, freed from the bonds of Disney and its affiliate Hollywood Records label, defied the odds and emerged as a respectable (if slightly off-kilter) artist on 2013’s Bangerz. Four years later, Cyrus returns with Younger Now (RCA), her most mature and assured effort to date. Just listen to the powerful “Inspired” as proof. “She’s Not Him” sounds like Joanne-era Lady Gaga, while Cyrus dares to venture into indie-pop territory on the title cut and “I Would Die For You.” She wisely serves up a dance track on “Malibu” and a duet with Dolly Parton (“Rainbowland”), which includes a personal message from Dolly to Miley. Halsey doesn’t completely abandon the electropop style that helped to establish her popularity on her second album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (Astralwerks). However, she sounds like she’s determined to expand her musical palette on songs including “Devil In Me,” “Sorry,” “Lie” and “Angel On peachATL.com | 9

Great Fall Date Ideas

BY Branden Lee

10 | 11.01.17

Summer may last longer in Atlanta than in most other major cities on the East Coast, but don’t think Southerners don’t know how to enjoy fall. A significant benefit of Atlanta not being a concrete jungle is being able to sit back and admire the nature the city has to offer. Watch the many trees change color, and finding many ways to embrace the colder weather with the one your love. Here are some cute ideas to try out.

1. Sporting Events

2. The Beltline

Atlanta is a major city and sports are a huge part of the city’s culture. The Falcons may not be as good as last year, but they have a big brand new fancy stadium which could be fun to check out on a date. The same stadium is home to Atlanta United FC which seems to be the most popular sports team in town right now, but with their season winding down, there’s still a lot to choose from. Also, NBA season has begun, and the Atlanta Hawks could use some hometown support.

One amazingly unique feature Atlanta has is the Beltline. This wonderful trail is bike-able and walkable, and an excellent way to explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods. Just because it’s getting cold, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any lovely sights to see. Get outside, and start enjoying the Beltline.

3. The Atlanta Aquarium The Atlanta Aquarium is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city housing the largest aquarium in the United States. Being a local can sometimes make it easy to miss out on the big tourist attractions, but the Georgia

AM E NITI ES, OPTIMI ZED

Aquarium is worth checking out. Plus it’s indoors so you can avoid the cold outside.

4. Painting & Wine Arts and crafts mixed with alcohol may seem like the most bizarre new craze to be sweeping the nation, but it’s surprisingly a lot of fun. It’s also a great date idea, and there are tons of spots to choose from to paint and drink wine, so find the one closest to you.

5. Stone Mountain Hike Atlanta summers are too unbearably hot to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking. Fall is the perfect time to climb a mountain, like Stone Mountain.

Our 27-story high-rise in the heart of Tech Square features three levels of the most unique amenities in Atlanta (if not the U.S.!). Experience our stunning collection of features and imagine your life, optimized. What happens when you pair adorable pups with gorgeous men? A pretty darn good-looking calendar that benefits animal rescues and can give the dogs in the photos a well-deserved forever-home! Mike Ruiz, the celebrity photographer whose clients include Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry, came up with the plan for his calendar after he rescued a grossly neglected Pitbull named Oliver five years ago. His idea was to combine his newly found passion for dog rescue with his long-time talent for shooting male fitness models. “I admire men who have sculpted their bodies into works of art,” he says. “It takes incredible skill and knowledge to form human tissue to near perfection. Photographing their work is quite gratifying to me.”

underlines the importance of getting more people to foster or adopt. She explains, “when a person fosters a dog, they are saving two lives: the dog they welcome into their home and the dog that takes that dog’s place in the shelter.” Every dollar made from the sale of the “HeartThrobs and Hounds” 2018 calendar will go directly to Fur Friends in Need and Lilo’s Promise animal rescues. “The calendar makes a perfect holiday gift for any human being with eyes and a pulse, and it brings awareness to our furry friends in need,” says Mike Ruiz.

The result of gathering the biggest male fitness models working today – including James Alexander Ellis, Dragos Sykos, Myles Leask, and Mike O’Hearn (we suggest you look up their Instagram accounts) – and combining them with dogs that were randomly chosen to represent the multitude of animals in need, is the stunning 2018 calendar “HeartThrobs and Hounds.” The dogs chosen for the shoot were picked from the two non-profit animal rescue centers that are the beneficiaries of the proceeds of calendar sales: Lilo’s Promise, the South Jersey area’s oldest Pitbull rescue, and Fur Friends in Need, a New Jersey and New York animal rescue. Sadly, the dogs featured in the calendar are only a fraction of the animals in need of a foster or forever home. The hope of launching the calendar is not only to raise much-needed funds for the rescues, but also to shatter the misconceptions about rescue animals. “People mistakingly assume it is the fault of the animal that it ended up being surrendered or abandoned,” says Nancy Flint, the founder of Fur Friends in Need, “I would say 90% of our animals have no issues whatsoever. It’s their humans who have failed them.” Michele Schafer from Lilo’s Promise Animal Rescue furthermore

On Wednesdays, we wear black – like any other day I’m scared to get too happy about something because I know something will come along and ruin it

Asking for a friend: Who has experience with glitter

The big, important decisions are supposed to be scary and hard to make, right?

beards?

It’s hump day and I need to get laid. Who is going to lower their standards for me?

My phone must know it’s getting replaced next week because it’s being the biggest brat about it!

The morning blues may bring out your insensitive side. Off-the-cuff remarks may be more biting than you think, so watch what you say before you say it. Having pals call you a thoughtless so-and-so will be no way to start the day.

Taking risks with your romantic life is not advised today. So don’t throw yourself at any Tom, Dick or Harry who gives you approving looks. You’ll have no idea what you’re getting into, and once he puts that dog collar on you, there may be no taking it off.

Sure, you used to have so much fun, way back when, with all those people that were so much more interesting and awesome. Oh, just stop it. Looking at your life through rose colored glasses with 20/20 hindsight would make anyone feel like crap. Life is good today -- enjoy it.

Thinking of someone special you met recently could weigh heavily on your mind today. You’ll look back with fondness on your brief encounter with Mr. Man, and you’d give him a call if you knew his name and his phone number.

Your passion for travel may be tempered by an anemic bank account. So relive past travels by going through photo albums of your many adventures. There’ll be pictures of you in Sydney, you in Vienna and you in Ibiza wearing nothing but a smile.

Don’t sign up for any arduous tasks or intense activities. In fact, don’t sign up for anything: Give yourself the entire day for you to do as you like. Left to your own devices, without plans, you’ll find unlikely and lovely activities.

50 | 11.01.17

Your bold ideas will be met with positive responses today, making for smooth sailing in anything you do. So try to come together with a group of folks and work on a common goal; your ability to lead your crew to an impressive result will be the talk of the town.

Impulse spending may buy you nothing but trouble today. It may be tough, but keeping your urges in check will be well worth it. Avoiding anything with the words, Dolce, Gabana, Burberry or Diesel will also do you a world of good.

You’ll feel on top of the world today and it will show. Your buoyant demeanor will grow as the day progresses -- as will your confidence in yourself. Using this optimistic energy to ask someone you like on a date could bring unexpected yet positive results.

Bold, daring and impetuous, you’ll blast through today like Speed Racer. You may not even know how fast you’re going as you whiz along. But look up ahead ... there’s Racer X, and he’s flagging you down, inviting you in for a pit stop.

It’s a good day to make karmic connections, so seek out people who strike a spiritual chord. You’ll have a renewal of spirit as you learn with your new friends how to bond with your inner selves. One guy in particular will show you a glimpse of heaven that you’ll want to see more of.

When faced with moral dilemmas you can always be counted on to do the right thing. While this may keep you from having as much fun as some of your more unscrupulous friends, at least you can sleep at night, even if it is alone.

WHAT happened was . . .

What Happened Was... Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and we’ll give you the answers served straight up and with a little ice. I’ve been in a relationship with my boyfriend for over three years now. I love him, we have a great time, but over the last year or so I have been feeling increasingly discounted. He makes all the decisions from where to go out to eat, who to see, and what trips we’re going on, even though I express my wishes and wants too. I suspect that he feels a little bit more entitled to his decision because he mostly pays for everything, but it is annoying the hell out of me that my arguments are simply swept away. What can I do to be more heard? Sincerely Overlooked Dear Overlooked This problem seems to be far too common in relationships. One has the financial advantage over the other, and too often that advantage is misinterpreted as authority or preeminence. Of course, you need to feel like equals in this relationship – especially if you have issues with feeling unequal to your partner. As with so many problems in a relationship, communication is key; you need to express your concern about this dynamic in your relationship before it blows up in your faces. If it does indeed turn out that he does feel superior to you, you know what to do, right? Get out … I have a regular f**k buddy, and we have great sex that often gets wild. The last few times he has asked me to choke him, and he keeps asking me to do it harder and harder to a point where he almost seems to pass out. I like a little breath play, but this is to a point where I’m afraid to hurt him, and it freaks me out a little bit. I want to keep having sex with him, but I also don’t want to escalate this kinky side anymore. What do I do? Sincerely Air-bender

52 | 11.01.17

Dear Air-bender How great you are having sex with someone you are super compatible with and who expands your sexual horizon. Not so great when you feel your boundaries are being crossed. There is no shame in letting him know that you are not comfortable with the level of breath play you are engaging in – but don’t tell him while you are having sex, tell him before, so he also knows when your limit is reached. You are obviously very comfortable with each other, so it should be totally alright if you set the boundaries on this one.

I think I have fallen in love with this guy, I know. I have been in love before, but the love always came gradually after developing an emotional and physical connection to the person. This is me falling in love with a guy from a distance. I know him, and we occasionally talk in social settings, but I have never engaged in a deep conversation with him and much less done anything physical with him, not even a hug. Still, I’m head over heels with him, and all I want is him. What should I do? I don’t even know if he would even be interested in me… Sincerely Lovestruck-from-a-distance Dear Lovestruck-from-a-distance Ah, the perplexing ways of LURVE! First of all, reach out to him! Don’t keep the distance between you! I’m not saying you should smother him with your love from the get-go, but get to know him better, signal that you are interested in him, and then, if the appropriate time occurs, ask him on a date! This could be the beginning of the love story of the century, but you also have to consider that your affections are not reciprocated, but that’s a whole different story. For now, you need to close that gap between you.
