Getting Nude to Feel Renewed Dan Carter Leads the Trend in Naked Yoga

By Matt Sunderland Dan Carter has been teaching naked yoga classes in Washington DC for the past three years. As the founder of Danimal (a combination of Dan and animal - get it?) yoga, he’s built the largest and most social nude yoga group in DC, with over 1,000 members! Now, he’s ready to go national. This May, he is inviting guys to join him in Palm Springs for a long weekend of uninhibited camaraderie under the hot desert sun. His Self Renewal: A Naked Health & Fitness Retreat will take place May 14-18 at Inndulge, one of the cities’ top gay resorts, and will feature Dan leading classes such as “Yoga for Sexual Health” and “Drum Up Your Bum. All sessions will have an emphasis on strengthening, stretching and encouraging men to connect and fall in love with their bodies. “All classes are non-sexual however intimacy and touch will be important bonding components to the weekend,” Dan explains. “A huge part of the experience will be building a real sense of family between the two dozen men in attendance.”

Let’s start with the most important question. How long does it take to be able to do a split? I get asked this all the time! I don’t remember a time I wasn’t able to do a split but I have many students whose hips are shaped in a way that they’ll never do one. I can teach a student to do a split variation that increases hip mobility and provides a cathartic release within five classes. I think that’s what really important. Why should guys consider taking up yoga? Yoga is a mind-body practice. In addition to toning up muscles, improving breath and lubricating joints, yoga also hones the nervous system and the bodies response to the world’s stressors. Is there a benefit to doing yoga in the nude? There are huge benefits! We talk about the experience as an un-shielding. Yoga is a very vulnerable practice with all the precarious shapes we bend into, by removing clothes, our last sheath, we make ourselves even more vulnerable and we grow from it. It also helps me, as the instructor, see your lungs, muscles and joints at work so I can give smarter cues and better hands-on adjusts.

We spoke with the naked Yogi to learn more. 10 | follow us @peachatlmag

What exactly did you do to achieve that badonkadonk? I’ve always had a bit of a butt, but I got it to be bigger through a combination of yoga, pilates and regular squatting. Unfortunately, it has made shopping for jeans more difficult, but I feel much healthier and happier. Does yoga increase the libido? All fitness, in healthy moderation, contributes to libido. What’s really nice about yoga is we not only focus on energizing the body, we focus on relaxation. To have incredible sex, you need to be able to get into that blissful rest space before things really start to heat up. What are the biggest misconceptions about yoga? That it’s only for one kind of person. Yoga is for everybody: every shape, color, age… In fact, the word yoga literally translates to “bring together”. What’s your advice to someone who is new to yoga? Take a private yoga class with a teacher who instructs beginners. If that’s not in your budget, take a beginner class, arrive early, and introduce yourself to the instructor. What’s your advice to guys who may be on the fence about dropping trou with strangers? The grass is truly greener on this side of the fence! I have had a shocking amount of guys

take a risk on one of my retreats as their first yoga experience and they’ve never been dissatisfied. If you’ve got anxiety around social nudity, your yoga practice or anything else, email me through my website and let’s talk about it. Why did you choose to do the retreat in Palm Springs? Palm Springs is my happy place! There is something so breathtaking about the palms set against the mountain and desert. Then there is the gorgeous mid-century architecture that transports you to Hollywood’s golden era. But most importantly, there are the handsome boys, sunning their tan, rippling skin by the crystal blue swimming pools. I chose to do the retreat specifically at the INNdulge resort because it is the perfect encapsulation of all three of those visuals! In addition to being a beautiful space in which to hold a retreat, I am a huge fan of their salt water pool, which is so kind on the skin. We all head into a vacation with expectations. What can we expect from the Self Renewal: A Naked Health and Fitness Retreat? This will be an absolutely transformative weekend. Men leave these retreats with a renewed sense of purpose and love of self.

Jake Shears Finds His Roots By Chris Azzopardi Photo: Kevin Tachman

Chill vibes permeated his 2018 self-titled solo album, but Jake Shears feels like dancing again. Shears’ latest single “Meltdown” is a club-made banger with shared Scissor Sisters disco DNA – which is exactly the point. Because even though the band has been on a hiatus since 2012, the glam-rock group’s frontman says his latest solo music is an extension of their legacy. From New Orleans, Shears talked about the constant “are the Scissor Sisters reuniting?” question, why Judith Light should play him in a biopic about his life, and how his _Masked Singer_ unicorn costume got him DMs from the plushies community. What did you want people to feel when they heard “Meltdown”? I wanted to make people dance. It’s absolutely my straight-up tribute to the fabulous Sylvester in such a big way. I wanted it to really invoke that kind of carefree spirit through the vocal styling and the bassline and just sort of how the song is structured, but at the same time I also wanted the song to feel unsettling and a little bit creepy (laughs). I don’t know why I always tend to have a creepy streak run through my stuff, but I like stuff with a little bit of a dark edge. It’s funny, because with my last record, I followed this vision. The last record was so personal and it was such a crazy thing to be detached from the band. I just followed my heart with that record. Not that I’m not following my heart with this, but I definitely was not making club music with my last record. The last record sounded a lot like you 14 | follow us @ peachatlmag

www.peachatl.com

were cutting the umbilical cord. (Laughs.) I think that’s a good way of putting it. I just made the last record with almost a set of rules. It was creative in a very specific way. So now I’m feeling like I can kind of throw the rule book out the window at the moment and just make some dance music again. It’s been a while since I fully made a carefree club song. How far along are you? About half of the record is done. The songs are so fucking good. I’m really very excited about them. They share a common feel. And yeah, I’ve just got a bunch of great singles right now. When we last spoke, you talked about how joyful music is important right now, when things happening in the world aren’t all that joyful. Is that vibe something you’re bringing to the rest of these tracks? Yeah. The music is super fun, but it’s – I don’t want to say it’s cynical because I’m not a cynical person at all. It’s just a little more abstract. I was just reading an article in the Times about TikTok killing the radio songwriter and all kinds of contemporary pop records. It’s changing songwriting, and there’s this whole piece about it. And I guess. I mean, I don’t listen to a ton of contemporary music, but people are only really writing lyrics that are words that would only actually come out of their mouths in conversations. I guess a lot of pop singers are basically only singing things that they would say. That’s not what I’m doing. (Laughs.) So you’re not writing this album for the TikTok audience? That’s the thing: Who knows! There’s an old Scissor’s song that’s just been making the rounds on there. Do you know the song “I Can’t Decide” off Ta-Dah? If you go on Spotify, I think it’s our most played song now. It became some fucking meme. But, basically, every teenager knows this song (laughs). It’s very strange. I guess you can’t really think about how a song will impact an audience at this point because there are just too many ways it can. Yeah, I just don’t even think about it at all really anymore. It’s the kind of thing where I don’t know at this point; it’s sort of all bets are off. And there’s so much music that gets put out. We’re sort of living in this time where there’s this excess of music. There’s too much music out there, and there’s too much stuff to sift through. I think it’s a really difficult time for listeners, that is if people are even really listening. So now I’m just sort of making this stuff for pleasure and passion, just stuff that gets me excited and stuff that I like to listen to. I mean, when I make a good song, I play the hell out of it until it comes out. Once it’s out, I never listen to it again (laughs). But I will basically make stuff that I like to rock out to, even on my own. I imagine that was more difficult to do in the band. It was a collaboration, so you all had to be in agreement. Yeah, I mean, some of the time (laughs). No – it would be that way in the Scissor Sisters, but

this stuff doesn’t have to go through as many filters. What does the culture of where you live now – in New Orleans and sometimes in Louisville, Kentucky – bring to you creatively? In New Orleans, I can turn everything down a bit. I get so much stimulation, and I’m so stimulated day to day in my life in general, so I come to New Orleans to really slow down. It gives me the space and it gives me elbow room. I just do a lot of reading and writing and fucking playing video games and hanging with my dog. I really have it to kind of unwind and sort of reset. I’m buying a house down here. I’ve got an apartment here that I’ve had for four years and now I’m fully sort of … I don’t know, it’s weird. My life has felt very sort of unmoored the last four or five years or so. I’m at this point where I really do need to put down some solid roots and really make a new home for myself because I’ve really been living out of a suitcase the past couple of years. That’s a life you’re used to. It’s true. But also, I’m 41 years old (laughs). And it’s really easy to just not commit and keep floating, so I’m just trying to make some strong commitments in my life just to anchor myself a bit. Are you bored yet with people asking you if you’re ever going to reunite with the Scissor Sisters? I mean, it’s sweet, but I’m already giving you what you’d be getting. These would be the Scissor Sisters records for the most part (laughs). In general, this would be the stuff that we’d be putting out. So it’s a bit of a confusing question. But I know, I understand. There’s a magic, especially live, seeing everybody together. But musically I feel like I’m continuing the legacy of the band. I’m definitely not reinventing a wheel when it comes to my own stuff. This is just the stuff I like to make. If you’re going back to this disco-dance-club sound, why not make it with the Scissor Sisters? (Laughs.) Because I don’t feel like twisting anybody’s arm. I don’t want to pull teeth to make it happen. I’m sure someday we will write again, there’s no doubt. But no one’s really chomping at the bit. I think I’m kind of the only one who really truly loved it. Being in the band, everyone sort of answers to this entity, which is this thing that you’re doing together. It has the last word. And I think after a long time that gets frustrating for everybody, especially if it wasn’t necessarily what you thought you’d be doing with your life. If everybody wanted to do it again, I’d be super happy to, but I would want them to want to do it and do it for the pleasure of it. And I’m sure someday maybe they’ll get the hankering for it. You were recently revealed as the masked singer on the UK’s version of The Masked Singer. How did you go about picking the songs you sang on the show? I just had a long list, and my number one: I really wanted to do “Babooshka” by Kate Bush.

In the UK they hadn’t had The Masked Singer yet so this was the first season, so I wanted to do something that the British public would know, sort of a standard song over there, but still a weird one. It was truly not the easiest song to start off with. Just singing under that thing was really, really tough. But they were all hard. The other ones were even kind of harder, but I was getting used to it. You just can’t breathe in there. You’re out of breath the whole time. But they let me choose the songs and my “Girls and Boys” cover (originally by Blur), I was really proud of. It was just so much fun. It was a blast. I was devastated when I got unmasked. I truly was. I was really bummed out. (Laughs.) I imagine for some people seeing you in a unicorn costume was a different kind of thrill. Did some plushies slip into your DMs? Yeah, I got a lot of DMs telling me that people thought it was very sexy, that unicorn outfit, so there were definitely some furries or plushies or whatever that were super into it. (Laughs.) Have you thought about who you might cast as you if a biopic based on your Boys Keep Swinging happens? God, that’s a good question. Maybe your friend Kelly Ripa in Jake Shears drag? Yeah (laughs). If it were me at 20 years old, she

16 | follow us @peachatlmag

would be amazing as my mom. I mean, she’d be so good. God, I’m trying to think who would play me. Keep in mind we have access to CGI and other postproduction tricks. I mean, I feel like Judith Light is so versatile and she really is truly one of the best actors of our time, so I feel like she’d at least bring something interesting to the table with it. And they could do motion capture. So I feel like Judith Light could do me in motion capture and it would be incredible. What about another book – would you be up for writing one? Yeah, I would love to. I’m planning on someday writing another one that starts where this one left off. That one finished in 2006 and we’re in 2020 now, so I would probably need five more years and I will write the next one. The next one would be even trashier and juicier than the last one. My 30s were pretty decadent. Spring Cleaning

Follow Mitzi @itsmitzip

When people think of Spring, it usually reminds them of colorful flowers, sunny weather, and the sounds of an alarm reminding us that bikini season is right around the corner. In Atlanta, spring is the perfect time for all walks of life to start ‘sluttying’ up their wardrobe. It’s also a great time to clean your life, whether it’s cleaning out the garbage lying around your house or purging your Facebook friends list. That last one always brings me shock and joy when I read the post explaining that “If you’re reading this, it means you made the cleansing and we’re still friends!” For me, cleaning up for spring is always a breeze. But if you are someone who needs ideas of the best ways to clean up your life this spring, let some of my close friends help you!

I visited a college friend and published author, Maria Kondor, to get some ideas on cleaning out old garbage. Maria is a master at organization, and has written several books on the subject including: Oh No You Didn’t… (Just Put Back the Trash You Threw Out), Plenty of Dishes in the Sink, and The Chancla Stays in the Picture (How to Keep the Things That Matter. Maria always recommends when cleaning out your belongings to do it fast. Simply open a window and start throwing things out. Or, with good fire insurance, set it all ablaze. She says your new wardrobe and furniture will be far better, and probably paid for in full! Going back to the ‘slutty’ wardrobe I mentioned earlier; if you don’t know what to get yourself for the warmer days ahead, I have a good friend and retired house twink, Ronaldo Ringelspiel, who has great pointers on what to wear. Ronaldo owns a boutique underwear store outside the trunk of his car called Briefs in a Trunk. During spring, he gets a lot of customers wanting to replenish their jockstrap collection. He recommends to get a matching tank top, tube socks with a high-top shoe, cutoff denim short-shorts, and a backwards hat (must be backwards). Ronaldo believes in creative originality in a person’s fashion, and this outfit is sure to make you stand out from the masses! If you need help with your love life this spring, (and who doesn’t!) My former business partner and back-stabbing bitch, Susan Whatserface, has a blog about how to remove bad relationships and start anew during spring, or what she calls the season of birth. Susan mentions of a few posts, if you need to remove yourself from a romance but don’t know how, take a vacation to a secluded island, and ghost your partner (also take their plane ticket so they can’t follow you). It’s sure to send the “we’re through” message. If it’s a platonic relationship you no longer wish to continue, try making it sexual! Most platonic relationships end when sex gets involved. Susan says being persistent is key when trying to get your friend to have sex with you. If you’re having trouble cleaning up your life this spring and preparing for the better days ahead, I hope these three experts gave some good advice! If you have some great ideas on cleaning up your life, I’d love to hear them! You can find me at that thrift store you’ve been meaning to go to, but never have time for it.

Yours in cleaning up this spring,

Mitzi Pennington is the self-proclaimed sex symbol and advice-giving-guru alter ego of Mirza Muftic. She came from humble roots of middle America and married into money shorly after dropping out of college. Her late husband’s fortune allows her to travel the world andhave a sense of enlightenment one normally gets from actually working for their money. Mirza has had none of those experiences in his life. On occasion, Mirza will perform as Mitzi around Atlanta. His other interests/day job include film editing, retouching, and stop-motion animation.

Me: You mean when it comes to men?

Him: Yes, go for someone out of your league! You can do that!

My boyfriend’s a keeper. No, wrong word. Hoarder. He’s a hoarder

Me: Thanks, that’s so sweet

Him: Yeah, he because he might have self-esteem issues, you never know

LEO (Jul. 23 - Aug. 22) You bring the party with you wherever you go. Today will be no different as you liven up the workplace with your mirth and pranks. But some may not appreciate your brand of fun. Forcing them to wear wigs while warbling “There’s No Business Like Show Business” won’t be comical to them.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sep. 22) You’ll wake up today feeling aggressive and combative. But don’t take it out on those around you. Hitting the gym would be a healthier way of releasing hostility, and it’ll be a lot safer for those unfortunates who have to face you today.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20)

LIBRA (Sep. 23 - Oct. 22)

Today will be puzzling to you, a mystery wrapped in a riddle. This confusion will extend into your social life where guys will be just as bewildering. You may finally meet the guy you contacted through Craigslist and you didn’t know that swimmer’s build meant having a body like Norm from Cheers.

Today will be as good as finding out that Liza Minnelli will be performing a private show just for you in the comfort of your home! Or it could be as bad as discovering that she has no intention of leaving once the show is through, and she needs someone to rub her bunions.

ARIES (Mar. 21 - Apr. 19)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21)

You’re always the first to dive in, and all you get for your efforts is a face full of mud. Spontaneity is a good thing, but sometimes it’s better to stick your toe in the water first. So look before you leap today. It could be the best way to save face.

Avoid starting conflicts at work today. A mercurial temperament will make you combative and hard to work with. But coworkers will be ready and they’ll be more than glad to take you on. Their claws will be longer, sharper and faster than yours, and they’ll relish using them on you.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 20)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21)

New opportunities may knock on your door today, but you won’t be home. That’s because you’ll get tired of waiting for them, and rush out before they could come to you. Impatience will be your Achilles heel today, especially after you realize what you’ve missed out on.

Today will not only be a productive day, but it’ll be lots of fun, too! So you’ll leave work with a song in your heart and a spring to your step. Take this positive energy with you after work. Guys won’t be able to resist someone as buoyant as you, and the fun may continue right into the night.

GEMINI (May 21 - Jun. 20)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)

Heeding your friend’s advice could save you a lot of heartache if you’d only take note. But you choose to go your own way instead. You’ll wish you had listened when they warned you about your latest boyfriend. You may have discovered earlier that he’s a she, and not a very pretty one at that.

Run for the security of home after this stressful day. There you can flop on the couch and channel surf. There’s bound to be reruns of The Mary Tyler Moore Show on TV to cheer you up. A little Mary and the gang can take your nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.

CANCER (Jun. 21 - Jul. 22)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18)

Your emotions will be easily ignitable today. Unfortunately, loved ones and coworkers will provide the fuel needed to set you off. But hold your tongue before railing on them for little details. Flipping out on your partner because you can see his nose hairs is way out of line.

Despite your best laid plans, today will be one disaster after another. You won’t be able to figure out why that is, but don’t try to fight it. Go with the flow and you’ll get though this difficult day, but expect frustration and a headache that will feel like your brain is caught in a vice.

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice.

My friend is an addict, and after a recent stint in rehab, he harbors a lot of resentment and anger towards me. He blames me for not being there when he was at his low point, but the thing is, he was doing his best to conceal all of his destructive behavior at the time! I had no idea just how bad things were until he checked himself into rehab, and, as a part of his treatment came clean (pun intended) about how extensive his drug use and abuse had been. Now, he is furious at me, and he told me that he doesn’t want friends that weren’t there for him when he needed it the most. I have tried to explain to him my point of view, but he continues to blame me for not seeing his side of the story. We are at a standstill, and I don’t know how to move on from here. I don’t want to lose him as a friend, so how can I break through to him? Sincerely Coming Down Again Dear Coming Down Again Your friend is going through a lot right now, and coming down from not only substance abuse, but abuse of friendships and trust raises a multitude of issues on its own. Instead of you breaking through to him, it seems like he needs a breakthrough of his own. Right now, he probably feels guilty about his behavior, and as a natural reaction, he is trying to place a bit of the blame on someone else than himself – and that’s you. Give him some space, and then try to talk to him again and explain why you didn’t step in while he was in trouble. Acknowledge the fact that you wish you could have acted differently and that you could have been there for him. Express how sorry you are for what happened to him and that you are not placing any blame or guilt on him. Show him that you are indeed a true friend who had the right intentions all along, and he will hopefully one day understand that too.

After going through a rough time, my boyfriend and I have struggled to get intimate again. It is actually a good thing because it has sparked a conversation about what really turns us on and what we fantasize about. My boyfriend confided to me that he enjoys wearing women’s clothing – especially lingerie – and he has even suggested that he could wear panties or stockings when we have sex. I’m open-minded, so I’m not opposed to the idea, but now I am wondering if he may be transgender, and this is a way for him to come out to me as trans at some point? This is his deepest desire and secret, so could it be that he is finally getting the courage to come out? Sincerely Secret Desires Dear Secret Desires Trans is definitely in the spotlight right now – and that is a very good thing! It is about damn time that one of our society’s most marginalized and exposed groups gets a voice and is heard, so the rest of us can listen and learn about what it means to be trans. But even though there is a focus on trans right now, it doesn’t mean that your boyfriend is trans. He might be – but he could also simply be into crossdressing, which fetishizes women’s clothing in a sexual way. In your case, time is your friend. And communication. If you’re into his fantasy, and you get turned on by him wearing lingerie, then enjoy that and expand your sexual horizon. And now that you have managed to open a good line of communication talk to him and engage in creating that safe space where he can be his true self. Who knows, he may end up coming out as trans, or he may just enjoy a pair of panties for kicks. What you can do is to be there in this moment with him and continue to re-establish and to deepen your connection.
