JUSTIN IN PENTICTON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie celebrated BC Day in Penticton on Monday. Around 3,000 filled Gyro Park to hear a brief speech where Trudeau touched on a few cliché talking points – he said it’s important for political opponents to work together, he complimented the Okanagan and then he boasted about an investment the government made to try stop invasive mussels from spreading into nearby lakes. The visit was mostly well-received, though some attended with placards to protest the government’s handling of the Trans Mountain Pipeline.

Nearly 100 swimmers will be dipping into the waters of Okanagan Lake this weekend to embark upon the legendary Rattlesnake Island Swim. “It’s a real notch in your belt once you’ve achieved it – the type of experience you reflect upon throughout the year,” said race director Ann Stanley, who completed the event for her 11th time last summer. “You’re driving along Highway 97, looking out at the island and thinking ‘wow.’” Stanley said the race is always a treat because the terrain is different every year. “You’re pretty stoked the week before because it’s an amazing swim; it’s an anything-goes kinda swim – it’s just completely fun.” No matter the conditions this year, the 3.1 and 7 kilometre distances will always present challenges, so she says racers “Really need to train for it and make up your mind that you’re going to hit the finish line.” There’s a comprehensive safety plan in place (mostly to protect swimmers from the Ogopogo). Peachlanders are very supportive of the event and a solid volunteer base continues to grow the event. Stanley said many lasting friendships have been formed throughout its rich history. This will be Stanley’s first year overseeing the event as Race Director. Next year, she plans on bringing back the rub-

Also, there will be a new category in 2019 for racers who want to compete without wetsuits. “You go faster with a wetsuit, so this way it allows people who taking swimming more seriously to compete apples to apples.” The new category was suggested last year by Emily Epp. At the age of 17, she competed in the 2017 Rattlesnake Island Swim, just a month after she crossed Europe’s English Channel – and she now holds the record for being the youngest Canadian female to

Registration is closed for this year, but proceeds from the event will be donated towards School District 23 to fund swimming lessons for students. There will also be a pancake breakfast fundraiser as part of the event. The public is invited to watch the fun unfold. Social media, in particular Twitter, has become an increasingly powerful force for political communication as we hear almost daily media reports on tweets from the President of

announced intentions to impose sanctions, expell the Canadian Ambassadors and withdraw roughly 16,000 students. My question this week: Are you concerned with the growing reliance of using Twitter diplomacy as opposed to traditional diplomacy by the Liberal Government?
Last week’s conflict of interest item around the All Candidates Meeting on Oct. 1 was woefully inaccurate. However, two points were accurate: that the Chamber of Commerce will be hosting it as they did for the last B.C. General Election and the last Peachland Council Election and that the Chamber President will moderate the All Candidates Meeting. District staff is not assisting and will not assist. To suggest that Council staff are “recruiting citizens” is quite simply preposterous. They have never done so in the past and will not on this occasion. Perhaps the Peachland Resident’s Association is confused with an earlier article in The View where our Chamber office reported it is “seeking two to six volunteers from local community groups to join this committee and act as independent ‘observers’ for the event.” As a result of that article we have received one volunteer and would welcome more. Chamber Executive Director, Patrick Van Minsel has NOT announced that he is running for Council, and if he does, will not participate in any way, shape or form in the organization or running of the All Candidates Meeting. Shayn Moritz of Edward Jones will act as timekeeper as he has before. Mr. Moritz is not a Chamber
Director. The question of conflict of interest should Mr. Van Minsel decide to put his name forward for a Council position has been researched and as in other provincial chambers of commerce there is no conflict of interest. If elected and Chamber subject matters arise, Van Minsel would recuse himself. One of the reasons for soliciting questions in advance is to avoid a one-sidedness on any specific particular topic. Questions from the floor will be entertained as they have been in past all candidate meetings. For this reason, as was also mentioned in the Chamber’s earlier View story, questions should be sent to the undersigned and NOT to the Chamber office. As in many political events, people become embroiled in their own agendas. As I stated earlier in the View, “We at the Chamber feel a fiduciary responsibility to participate in the democratic process of elections on behalf of our apolitical membership and the Peachland citizenship at large.” As previously mentioned, questions for the Candidates can be emailed between Sept. 15 and 29 to rockyrs. tritonmarine@gmail.com. Six one-way tickets to the moon please Dear editor: I would like to quote Dermid Travis of Integrity BC. “Echo chambers has been popular as a phrase of late, the idea that we post and share links and opinions that we agree with on social media to others that also agree with them, thereby amplifying their echo.” The echo from certain groups ring hollow however. We have the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance. You might remember them saying a slide was caused by logging, when the nearest logging was over five kilometres away. We have the BC Tapwater Alliance. You might remember them unable to figure out why the waters in the creeks were brown during a record breaking spring runoff. Now we have the Coalition for Forest Reform happy about a report the Government just came out with, but I quote “Mr. Haddock’s report misses the opportunity to focus on meaningful improvements to the governance of professional associations, drifting well beyond his terms of reference to propose unjustified changes to the forestry regulatory regime unrelated to professional reliance”. In other words, his report was Shanghai’d by special interest groups. The news releases issued by these three organisations and others are all suspiciously similar in tone and character, which brings us back to the ‘echo chambers’. Are all these groups only half a dozen people, using one script writer, posing as several different interest groups? These half dozen or so people then use social media to share links and amplify their echo. An echo that rings hollow to people
who actually have some knowledge of watersheds, creeks, and forestry. These alliances and coalitions depend on tugging at the heartstrings of the naive and uninformed to further their cause. There are extremists in every aspect of society. Religious, environmental, political, you name it. These extremists are not interested in facts or reality, instead, they want the whole world to abide by their skewed, narrow little view of the world. The Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance and other volunteers have begun a wetlands health assessment project in the Wilson Lakes area. They are given “basic working knowledge of wetlands to evaluate the health of sites in proximity to industrial and development activities”. I say “learning is fun!”. I also say “a little knowledge is dangerous!” A member of the PWPA is acting in an advisory capacity to Peachland Council. Would you rather be advised by working professionals with years of experience, or some weekend warriors with a little knowledge? To put it another way, would you like the NASA trip to the moon, or the Wile E. Coyote Acme Rocket trip to the moon? If Peachland council is listening to members of the PWPA, they may want to try discount bungee jumping too. Please. On a final note, I don’t want to leave mining out of this discussion. There is a large deposit of Leaverite recently discovered north of the McCall Lake area. I would like the PWPA to state their position on this deposit, and most importantly, why they hold that position. Ron Barkwill Peachland

Peachland is an endangered species Happy Hall is running Dear editor: The comments reported in the View over the past three weeks by the Peachland Mayor and some councilors, as well as those of the RDOS, compel me to contribute the following thoughts. Peachland is a very unique community and not just in the Okanagan Valley. It’s a residential enclave in very close proximity to all manner of retail and services in West Kelowna, ten minutes away. Boasting several kilometers of public waterfront with an unparalleled panoramic view of the lake and mountain park, Peachlanders are fortunate to not look across the lake at another town! Furthermore, the benches and slopes provide an amphitheater-like landscape where a high percentage of homes enjoy a gorgeous view. People move here from all over the country and beyond because of the way the town feels today. We all know this so what is my point? Peachland is an endangered species! The Downtown Sustainable Plan recognized this quality and sought to preserve and enhance that certain “je ne sais quoi.” Its ambiance is being inexorably extinguished by misguided shortterm motives and mismanaged financing as Mr. Keith Fielding and Mr. Eric Hall have recently expressed in the View, Council has denied the will of the people by catering to developers dreams. Interestingly, Mayor Fortin states (July 13 View) “some people wish to see Peachland imitate a European style of urban design but the community should form its own identity.” Is that perfect irony? I believe the community already did that and now some people want to imitate Miami Beach. Coun. Peter Schierbeck “was convinced” by a potential investor that a three storey hotel on Beach Avenue would not be viable to any developer. PeachTree Villae is not a hotel design, nor is any property on Beach Avenue suitable for a modern hotel. A hotel should be five to seven storeys and located next to the highway back from Beach or north of Princeton on a sizeable parcel. A “viable” hotel will need a two to three level podium that includes a parking structure, valet service (a big driveway), taxi stand, conveniences and all manner of service entrances, garbage management, food delivery and so forth. If you are convinced by this “investor” Mr. Schierbeck, I suggest that you ask more questions in fu-
ture, if you get the opportunity. Coun. Mike Kent says that the three storey restriction would limit a potential developer’s chances of success in Peachland so “sometimes unpopular decisions have to be made.” Clearly a developer’s chances of success have little to do with building height restrictions, if past failures are any measure. If a developer can’t make money with three storeys (of what?) then they are building the wrong thing. Sounds like you were speaking to the same “investor.” At present, pre-sales for PeachTree do not seem to be flying-off the shelf and development permits have not been sought. Hmmm. Councilor and Mayoral candidate, Keith Thom, calls PeachTree a “litmus test to see whether it really will serve as a catalyst for development in the downtown.” Whoa Papa, a litmus test? This term is applied in single-issue politics (like gay marriage) to US federal judges to know their philosophy prior to confirmation – because of the precedents that could be set or revoked by their rulings, for all time. Single-issue politics reject attempts at persuasion, lacks context and leads to absurdities (like 10 storeys on Beach). The opposite view is against a government’s usurp of power by some novel interpretation of its mandate. Moreover, changing the OCP was not on the agenda last election. It is now. Coun. Pam Cunningham offers the “horse is out of the barn” rationale. “After making an exception for Peachtree then we’ve opened the door just to slam it shut” [for other developers, if the height restrictions are reversed]. I think this is the most unfortunate comment on the subject. If one kid at the birthday party gets a steak then everyone will want a bigger steak. How about “Sorry kids that was a bad idea, everyone gets a delicious hamburger?” If you know you are on a slippery slope before you throw that steak on the grill but you cook it anyway, your fired. Thank you to Couns. Vucinovic and Condon for listening to the people. Thank you to Mr. Eric Hall for running for Mayor as, until your announcement, it was Ms. Fortin or Mr. Thom, both voting to disregard the will of citizens and the recommendations of staff. Kenneth W. Janes Peachland
Dear editor: I just returned home from shopping down at the IGA. As I brought the groceries into the house, I swear I heard the sound of two toilets flushing! I said to my wife, “did you hear that?” She pointed to our copy of the Peachland View on the counter. “Read THAT!”, she says. As I read the article about Eric Hall running for Mayor, I not only felt the sensation of elation, but I also quickly realized what that flushing sound was! It was the sound of two – now useless – campaigns going
down the tank! More importantly, I gave thanks as I realized that in our little world here in Peachland, these progressives are not able to demand all mainstream media blindly support them. They can’t rig the Soros voting machines to throw votes their way, and they can’t register dead people or illegal immigrants to vote for them. Nope! Coun. Keith Thom and Mayor Cindy Fortin are going to have to run on their record! Gosh, that must be frightening for them! Nick Walsh Peachland

CONTRIBUTED Okanagan music lovers who appreciate a voice described as amazing and magnificent will be treated to their favourite songs from musicals like Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Carousel, Sound of Music, and Cohen and Bocelli, all sung by the renowned Mexican classically-trained soprano Vanessa Amaro, at two free concerts to be held at the Peachland Waterfront Park Gazebo on Saturday August 18 and then on Sunday August 26, as soon as the park is clear from other events. Both shows run from about 4 to 6 p.m. Vanessa was born in Mexico City where she obtained her degree in music from the National Conservatory of Music. She has graciously volunteered to sing for these benefit concerts with all proceeds from donations going to support an extremely disadvantaged Mexican family. The family includes a 25-year-old mom (who began to develop glaucoma at 6 years old and was totally blind by 17), her three children (ages 4, 6 and 7), and her partner (father of the youngest child), who is challenged and illiterate. Their income is meagre and sporadic as it is derived from selling candy on the beach or on the street. Clothing, shoes and food frequently come from other people’s trash. Their housing is totally inadequate as there isn’t even any room for beds, even though they don’t own any, as the family of five shares one tiny bedroom. The kitchen consists of a single sink on the wall with no shelving or drawers. In Mexico there is no government assistance whatsoever for unemployable people. The children suffer as a result. Schoolhouse guano saves Saxon vines BAT EDUCATION AND ECOLOGICAL PROTECTION SOCIETY Two acres of grape vines had been struggling at Saxon Winery Vineyard until BEEPS, Peachland’s local bat society, partnered with owners Paul and Jane Graydon to promote healthier vines using bat guano. “Guano was put down on two struggling varietals, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris”, said Paul. “2017 was a very challenging year as both varietals suffered from powdery mildew resulting in a 50 per cent loss of grapes.” Bat guano was sparingly distributed at the base of these vines when a blanket of early November snow covered the vineyard. Guano is extremely high in nitrogen therefore must be applied moderately. Paul reported, “This year the vines are healthy and the grapes are plentiful. There are no signs of mildew at all. We expect a full recovery to the usual levels and will know more in September about the actual yield and the effect the guano has had. Our plan is to continue laying down more guano in the affected areas and to extend it to our Gewurztraminer for next season.” The Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society is extremely happy with the agro-environmental partnership created with Saxon Winery.
BEEPS President, Darlene Hartford, states, “Last year we approached Saxon, a local family owned organic winery, regarding the possibility of distributing guano. We then learned of their struggling section of vines. This led to the pilot project which has benefitted BEEPS’ ongoing research on the bat species while promoting organic practices within a local industry.” Each year colonies of Yuma and Little Brown bats return to Peachland Historic School after hibernation and roost in the schoolhouse attic, producing guano throughout late spring and the summer. Peachland Volunteer Fire Brigade, another community partner of BEEPS, collects guano from the attic each February after the bats have left for mating and then move on to hibernate. Approximately four large trash bags of guano are collected each season. Guano is also available in one kilogram packages at Peachland Visitor Centre for the backyard gardener.

GARY BOYLE
BACKYARD ASTONOMER The weekend of Aug. 11 to 13 will be a great time for heading out of town to the great outdoors, especially at night. This is the weekend of the annual Perseid meteor shower and during the peak nights of Aug. 11/12 and Aug 12/13; more than 100 meteors (shooting stars) can be seen per hour. The shower is the result of Earth encountering the gritty debris of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. These meteors will strike the atmosphere at around 60 km/sec and cause long streaks which completely vapourize. The average particle size is that of large sand grain but some small pea gravel size meteors can cause bright fireballs that light up the sky and ground. It is best to head out of town to enjoy the dark skies with the beautiful Milky Way stretching from the south and continuing overhead. The planet Saturn is immersed in the band of star above the constellation Sagittarius. Find a wide open area and bring a lawn chair, snacks and bug spray but respect trespassing on private property and fields. The planet Mars will keep you company all night long as it low in the south east as the sky darkens. New Moon occurs on the 11th so it will not wash out the sky with its brilliance like other years.
VIEW STAFF Drivers who don’t run red lights won’t have to worry about the cameras in Kelowna that will be monitoring intersections 24 hours a day. Until the end of July, 140 cameras across the province were
only in operation for six hours per day. The cameras were installed at intersections identified as having high-crash rates. Five were in Kelowna and are marked in blue on the map above. The Okanagan has just one other red light camera and it’s in Vernon.
