2013 has been an exciting year for youth in our community. From the Skate Park being in full operations to the upcoming opening of the Peachland Youth Centre – there are lots of new things for youth to do in Peachland! This fall we have an exciting new amenity coming for adults and seniors. The District of Peachland recently received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for our “Aging Actively – Outdoor Fitness Equipment” project. Coupled with community funding from the Peachland Rotary Club and the Peachland Lions Club, the District will be installing seniors’ friendly fitness circuit in Lambly Park by early this fall. The District will also be working with the Peachland Wellness Centre to see how we can work together to get people out and using the equipment! This is a true collaborative project bringing together three generous partners in our community. Stay tuned for details. At the Recreation Centre we have a variety of offerings for you and your family: • Halloween Spooktacular • Family Pickleball • Breakfast with Santa Please take a moment to peruse our latest offerings. If you have a program idea you would like to see offered or skill you want to share, let us know. We are always looking for new ways to better serve you. Cheryl Wiebe Director of Community Services

Do you have a dog? We want to hear from you! Earlier this year, District Council directed staff to work with the Dog Park Committee “to establish guidelines and a multiyear strategy for improving access and availability of off leash dog areas.” The Committee has explored options for dog parks and would like to hear from you. Please visit www.peachland.ca and complete your survey by September 20, 2013. After this time the survey results will be reviewed by the committee and further community consultation may occur. Any questions about the Dog Park feasibility project, contact Cheryl at 250-767-2133

The Mayor’s Task Force on Climate Change Mayor Fielding initiated the Mayor’s Task Force on Climate Change as a Committee of Council in late 2011. A Terms of Reference for the Committee was established that sets out the responsibility of that committee. The Task Force will aid the District of Peachland in meeting its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction targets into the future. The Task Force will uphold the mission statement below: “The District of Peachland, as party to the B.C. Climate Action Charter, will foster a community and workplace culture that respects the environment. The District will seek to minimize/eliminate human caused environmental degradation through a variety of strategies and policies. Those strategies and policies that will address things such as, carbon neutrality by 2012, will vary widely in their content, scope and interdepartmental / community integration. Through quality research, education, assessment, coordination, communication and implementation significant strides in becoming sustainable are expected into the future”. Local governments across the province are taking action to address the often devastating effects that climate change can have on communities. The easiest and most cost effective way to do this is to attempt to minimize the impact of climate change through action as opposed to reaction. This means that reducing GHG’s through GHG reduction initiatives is imperative if major shifts in the world’s climate leading to costly clean up and rebuilding are to be avoided. The Mayor’s Task Force is just one way that the District is finding to address this very important issue. The Mayor’s Task Force meets on the last Wednesday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in Peachland Council chambers located at 4450 6th Street. This committee provides feedback to Council regarding climate programs and initiatives that the District may undertake. The committee meetings are open to anyone who may wish to attend and the District would encourage you to participate.
