Young Alberta man presumed drowned near Rattlesnake Island PEACHLAND VIEW West Kelowna RCMP are asking boaters to stay clear of the search area near Rattlesnake Island while an ongoing recovery operation is underway to retrieve the body of a swimmer presumed drowned on Okanagan Lake. On Saturday afternoon at approximately 2:40 p.m., West Kelowna RCMP responded to a call of a man who had not resurfaced while cliff jumping near Rattlesnake Island. Cpl Jocelyn Noseworthy says attempts by persons in the area to locate the 33-yearold Alberta man were unsuccessful.
West Kelowna RCMP, Peachland Fire and Rescue and members of the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue were on scene Saturday but despite extensive efforts, they were unable to locate the man, and he is presumed to have drowned, Cpl Noseworthy said. At press time, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was still at the location attempting to locate the man’s body. “For the safety of our divers and the entire search team, we request that boaters remain away from the area while we complete our search,” Cpl Noseworthy said. Investigators do not believe criminality was not involved in this incident.

with lost revenue due to COVID-19. On Saturday, August 1 a power outage affecting 147 BC Hydro customers in Peachland started at 5:46 p.m. Hydro customers southeast of Highway 97, north of 1st Street, and west of Beach Avenue were without power until it was restored at midnight. BC Hydro spokesperson Mary Anne Coules says the outage was caused by a problem with their equipment. “To repair the issue, we replaced the transformer and then reconnected the impacted customers,” Coules told the View. Chrissy Chernoff, a manager at the Edgewater Bar and Grill, said it was a pretty huge hit for the business. Chernoff estimates they had to throw away about $2,000 in product as a result of the outage. The kitchen remained closed until about 2 p.m. the following day so staff could reprep everything. “It was something else. Needless to say, we weren’t thoroughly impressed,” Chernoff said. “At least it wasn’t a whole day. At least they got it done that night.” Chernoff said it was the second outage they experienced in as many weeks. “The thing is last Sunday we lost a leg to that same transformer so we had to shut down as well but thankfully that day we didn’t lose our coolers. We didn’t have any product loss, it was just loss of revenue…then less than a week later, it happens again. We were like, ‘what in the world?’ But they did put in a bigger transformer so it shouldn’t happen again.” Several restaurants further down Beach Avenue were unaffected by the outage.
Highway stretch between Penticton and Summerland to get barriers PEACHLAND VIEW The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says they will be improving safety for area residents, commercial truck drivers and tourists by installing median barriers beginning this fall on sections of Highway 97 between Penticton and Summerland and Highway 97A between Armstrong and Vernon. “Improving safety for people is our top priority and installing median barriers along sections of the highway ensures an added layer of protection for travellers,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure in a release sent July 31. “This project will benefit those travelling in the Okanagan, whether it be for daily errands, business or pleasure.” Once completed, the centre barrier will divide the highway along these segments, improving safety and preventing head-on collisions and other crossover accidents, the release states. The ministry says they will issue two separate tenders. One tender will be issued for the installation of median and roadside barriers on sections of eight kilometres of Highway 97 between West Bench Hill Road and Sun-Oka Beach Provincial Park. The roadside barrier will connect with the existing roadside barrier and work on this project is anticipated to start in early fall. A second tender will be issued for the installation of continuous median barriers on a 5.9-kilometre section of Highway 97A between Smith Drive in Armstrong and Pleasant Valley Road in Vernon. Work on this project is anticipated to begin in late 2020. Drivers can expect minor delays during these projects, as the installation work will occur outside the peak traffic hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the release states. Updates on delays will be available online at DriveBC.ca.

Choking girl saved by an off-duty Grassfire off Highway 97C being held JOANNE LAYH Peachland paramedic
PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
JOANNE LAYH A choking incident could have ended very differently for a 13-year-old Penticton girl, had it not been for the timely appearance of an off-duty Peachland paramedic. On July 28 Peachland paramedic Quinn Gallacher was in Penticton, where he’d recently bought a house. While he and his realtor were on their way to have lunch together, he heard a blood curdling scream coming from a van pulled over on the side of the road. Gallacher thought perhaps it was a couple quarreling until he heard the scream again. “I thought, it sounds like an I’m not okay scream, so I told my realtor to turn around,” Gallacher said in an interview with the View. They turned around and when Gallacher approached the van, he found a woman and her daughter who was obviously in distress, wasn’t passing air and going blue.
BELL, JACOE & CO. R0060892355 PV01
“Her mom was like, ‘she’s choking, she’s choking, she’s choking,’ so I did three rounds of the Heimlich maneuver and noticed she was moving air again,” Gallacher said. The girl eventually coughed up a water bottle cap along with a bunch of blood and was breathing again, much to Gallacher’s relief. “It was the best case scenario. When that thing came out I was like ‘thank you baby Jesus,’” Gallacher said. “It was definitely a positive outcome.” Gallacher said he had intended to drive to Penticton himself that day but his girlfriend took his keys by accident so he had to ride along with his realtor, who took the wrong way, bringing them past the choking girl at just the right time. It was the second medical emergency he’s come across in as many visits to Penticton. His previous visit led to an encounter with a child having an allergic reaction, who he was able to help.
A grassfire right off of Highway 97C near Trepanier Road that broke out late Tuesday night was at press time on Wednesday currently being held. As of Wednesday afternoon the size of the fire was .2 hectares and the fire was being held by nine BC Wildfire personnel, according to Gagan Liedhram, a fire information officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre. Liedhram said the fire is suspected to be human caused, however no further details were released as the fire is still under investigation. Peachland Fire and Rescue attended the brush fire just outside the district’s fire protection area. “We were informed of a brush fire/grass fire at the side of the Connector shortly after midnight last night,” Peachland fire chief Dennis Craig told the View on Wednesday morning. “We contacted BC Wildfire and they requested that we attend with just one apparatus, our water tanker.” Craig said BC Wildfire’s response was very quick so they just supported BC Wildfire with containment of the fire by four
members. Peachland Fire and Rescue members were finished around 2 a.m. while BC Wildfire remained on scene overnight. “Once we had a wet line surrounding the fire is when BC Wildfire released us, and they stayed on the scene to mop up and continue to extinguish hot spots,” Craig said. “This morning they were still on scene at 6 a.m. but the fire was looking really good at
that point.” Craig said no homes were threatened, but is warning people to stay vigilant about fire safety. “If you see smoke or fire call *5555,” Craig said. “Don’t assume somebody else has. Things are continuing to dry out there so remain vigilant and make sure you’re extinguishing your smoker’s material properly as well as your campfires.”

Leave health advice to Dr. Henry and the B.C. Health Authority Aren’t we fortunate in Peachland to have a mayor who, as a former nurse, feels qualified to take the lead on the mask debate even while the majority of the other mayors in the province are quite content to let Dr. Henry and the B.C. Health Authority take the lead on this issue. I get that she is just expressing her personal opinion as I’m sure there are other health care professionals in the community that would express their opinion, but of course they don’t receive the media coverage that an elected official does, which I’m sure Mayor Fortin is aware of, being a former journalist. Have supported the mayor in the past but have a feeling she will be able to add former Mayor of Peachland to her resume after the next election. David Blair Chapman, Peachland
Resident suggests signage refresh As part of the staycation movement for Beautiful British Columbia my husband and I just returned from a five-day road trip through Lake Country, Vernon, Revelstoke, Sicamous and Salmon Arm. One of the impressions we had of all of these communities was their amazing beauty and, in most cases, the investment in modern updated signage welcoming one to visit the town. The signs really drew us in. What do you say, Peachland? Is it time to do the same and upgrade the two signs at the north and south entries? Let’s sponsor a competition submitting new design ideas for approval by city council. Let’s represent! Gael O’Neil, Peachland

PFRS lieutenant Chuck Siggs recognized for 35 years of service Under normal circumstances, Peachland’s fire department presents years of service awards at the district’s civic awards ceremony, however, this year’s ceremony was cancelled due to COVID-19. While there won’t be a ceremony, this year firefighters Matt Stoltz, Doryan Mash and Dylan Sheppard received awards for 10 Years of Service, fire chief Dennis Craig received an award for 20 Years of Service and the 2019 Firefighter of the Year was Devin Smith. PFRS lieutenant Chuck Siggs reached a huge milestone this year and was recognized for 35 Years of Service at an informal presentation last week. Mayor Cindy Fortin presented the award to Siggs outside the fire department. “Thirty-five years is a lot of time. Thank you for your service,” Mayor Fortin said as she presented Siggs with the award. Siggs began his volunteer fire and rescue career at 30 years of age in the Lower Mainland. Over the next 25 years he rose through the ranks of the 30-member fire station. After several years as a firefighter, CPR instructor and industrial first aid attendant, he was first promoted from firefighter/ driver operator to safety officer in 1994, then captain in 1995 then deputy district chief in 1999 before retiring from the Surrey Fire Service. During his time with the Surrey Fire Service he was one of only a few Volunteer Surrey firefighters to
complete his JIBC NFPA 1001 level 1 certificate at that time and also earned his JIBC Certification as a Training Officer level 1 and 2. In 2001, right after the New York World Trade twin towers were struck by two passenger jets on 9-11 Siggs suggested and organized an emergency “boot drive” within the fire department’s Crescent Beach district to aid and benefit the killed FDNY firefighters’ surviving family members. He and his fellow firefighters raised over $7,000 in just two days and had the money sent to the FDNY with instructions to add
the funds to their survivors’ benefit fund being set up at the time. Siggs retired to Peachland in July of 2009 and within a few months had joined the Peachland Fire Rescue Service, rising to lieutenant within 18 months. During his time with Peachland Fire and Rescue Service, so far Siggs has attended over 3,000 fire callouts plus approximately 400 weekly fire drills, training courses, meetings and public events. Combined with his years with the Surrey Fire Service, where he attended over 5,000 fire callouts plus approx 1,500 weekly fire drills, meetings, training courses and public events,

Douglas Alexander Wardle passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 29, 2020 at the age of 58. His lengthy battle with cancer was bravely fought with courage and strength. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 29 years, Sheila, and his daughters Lindsay and Allison of whom he was extremely proud. Doug will also be forever remembered by his siblings Susan, Aileen, Nancy, David and their families. Doug was born on September 19, 1961 in Penticton, B.C. He grew up in Summerland, B.C. and worked at the Summerland Research Station for 32 years. After marrying Sheila in 1990, Peachland, B.C. became their home where they raised their family. He was a kind and thoughtful man who only saw the best in people. He will always be remembered for his humour and patience. Doug enjoyed the simple things in life like a good book, working in the garden and giving big hugs. He will be greatly missed and will always be in the hearts of his family and friends. It was his wish to have a simple passing and therefore no service will be organized. As a tribute to Doug, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation. Arrangements are in the care of Everden Rust Funeral Services & Crematorium, West Kelowna Arrangement Centre (250768-8925). Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.everdenrust.com.

COVID-19 Update: Kelowna cluster continues to raise concerns SOPHIE GRAY
LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE B.C. health officials reported no new COVID-19 related deaths but 146 new test-positive cases over the B.C. Day long weekend. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry broke down the new case count, which took place over a four day period. From Friday to Saturday, 43 cases were recorded, while Saturday to Sunday saw 29, Sunday to Monday reported 46, and Monday to Tuesday had 28 new COVID-19 cases. This weekend’s case numbers bring the total number of cases in the province to 3,787. Dr. Henry said the case numbers over the long weekend are not unexpected, as we are now seeing cases from those exposed at events up to two weeks ago. “This is a concern, because the majority are related to what happened prior to this long weekend,” she said. “The source of these cases is varied, and as we’ve talked about many times, this is something that we take very seriously in public health. To track down and trace how everybody, every single case, became infected is important to us.” Case counts continue to rise across the province, with multiple exposure events continuing to cause an impact. Interior Health is now reporting 377 cases total, 137 of which are linked to the Kelowna exposure events. In a press release sent out last week, Interior Health noted they have changed the way they are reporting cases linked to the “Kelowna cluster”. “Currently we are seeing more broad community transmission so we are expanding our reporting to focus on any cases that are linked to Kelowna

during their exposure or infectious period,” read the press release. The new reporting format does not change the total number of cases in Interior Health, but reclassifies many as associated with the Kelowna cluster. “This new reporting will more accurately reflect what is happening in the city and region,” said the health authority. Interior Health also announced a new testing site on Tuesday. The new site is located in downtown Kelowna, at the Community Health and Services Centre. The clinic is open from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day of the week and does not require an appointment. “We are taking a different approach and trying something new at the CHSC,” said Dr. Sue Pollock, IH chief medical health officer. “Many of the people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in Kelowna this month have been in their 20s and 30s, and live, work and socialize downtown. This site is set up to be convenient and accessible for these individuals and others, so that getting tested when you may have been exposed to COVID-19 is easy, and we can stop the spread.” The new testing site will run for a minimum of two weeks.
