2017 Official Visitor Guide for Peachland
26-27
Welcome
Hi again visitors from near and far. Let me introduce myself again, my name is Joey and I manage the Visitor Information Centre here in Peachland, BC. After living in Alberta for 19 years I, like many Peachlanders, have relocated to call Peachland home and I haven’t looked back. Thanks for picking up our Official 2017 Visitor Guide! It’s jam packed with all the information you’ll need to make your stay in Peachland, however long it may be, an unforgettable experience. In this guide, you’ll find your pick of restaurants, accommodations, events, activities and so much more. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Stop by and meet our exceptional staff of volunteers and me, here at the Visitor Information Centre and we will help you find what you’re looking for! It’s been a busy year here in Peachland and with all the buzz surrounding Canada’s 150th year of Confederation, we are excited for another fantastic Okanagan summer! We welcomed over 18,000 visitors in 2016, so we know that 2017 is set to be an incredible year with lots to celebrate and an abundance of new friends to celebrate with. What’s new in Peachland you ask? We jumpstarted the new year with our Winter Indoor Artisan Market, attracting visitors from across the region. The reception has been so great that we have even been nominated for a Peachland Civic Award! We designed and implemented our new and improved Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre. Our focus for this display is environmental stewardship and we are going battier than we’ve ever gone before! Pop in, explore our centre, ask questions and #GoBatty with us!
2
Our Visitor Centre has flourished with fresh, new merchandise from some of our incredibly talented artists and artisans throughout the Okanagan. We have everything from vibrant artwork to #feelinpeachy glassware and don’t forget to purchase your Lily; it’s the official flower of Canada 150! We are also the lucky recipients of Destination BC’s Visitor Services Innovation Grant! This grant will allow us to take Peachland to the next level and into the digital age. We will be installing beacons throughout the town to make your stay in Peachland even more memorable. These beacons will give you quick and easy access to current and ‘after hours’ information about all things Peachland. You’ll need your Bluetooth enabled on your mobile device, Google Chrome downloaded and allow for push notifications and there will be lots of neat information at your finger tips. Peachland may be growing, but it’s still home to all the activities that you have known and loved year after year. Explore the wilderness and hike the highest Peachland peaks, tantalize your taste buds and tour the vast vineyards and wineries; Peachland is the ultimate destination for any type of traveller. Book your adventure and fly Canada’s highest freestyle zipline, delve into history and imagination or try to catch a glimpse of Canada’s most notorious and famous water monster, Ogopogo of Lake Okanagan. Whether you’re on a family vacation or a romantic getaway, Peachland is enjoyed by all! It’s the perfect place to let time stand still and recharge your batteries, to bask in the sunshine and splash in the waves. It’s the place where friends and family come together, for shopping the latest trends and for indulging in culinary adventures. It’s for enjoying a glass of the Okanagan’s finest wines, for savouring the sweetest of fruits and cherishing its breathtaking views. It’s the Heart of the Okanagan.

WINERIES Take your time on Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive is a gem in the Okanagan Valley, with delights at every turn. Winding roads and rolling hills invite you to slow down and explore first-class wineries, cideries and, most recently, a new craft brewery. Meet friendly proprietors and knowledgeable staff while sampling award-winning products from 23 Bottleneck Drive members. Unique tasting experiences await and are easy to find as signs guide you along Bottleneck Drive. Many member locations offer comfortable and family-friendly picnic areas, while others also feature bistros. In the spring, Summerland’s orchards are awash with blossoms. In the fall, the warm air is fragrant with the smell of apples. Bottleneck Drive includes three traditional cideries, which are crafting cider true to tradition and reflective of Summerland’s strong agricultural heritage. Summerland has a complex geological history, varied exposure and sub-climates. Wineries offer diverse styles including award-winning sparkling wines, crisp whites and complex reds. Bottleneck Drive features several organic and natural wineries; don’t be surprised to see chickens roaming the vineyards as well as other earth-friendly practices. Many of Bottleneck Drive’s wineries feature elegant tasting rooms and modern architecture that is striking against a backdrop of lush green vineyards, open skies and the deep blue waters of Lake Okanagan. Summerland’s quaint Town Centre features shops, artisans, and cafes, including Bottleneck Drive associate members. Watch for special Bottleneck Drive events including the Grand Sommelier Express (June 24, 2017) and the famous Light Up the Vines celebration each November. Stop by the Visitors Centre for maps and friendly advice.

Peachland’s Fuzzy Friends
Peachland is known for its amazing views, picturesque waterfront walkway, friendly people, and its bats. Yes, that’s right—BATS! Previously considered a nuisance, these nocturnal mammals have become a local phenomena. In 2002 the 103 year old Peachland Primary School was refurbished and a massive bat roost was discovered—a colony of over 2000 Yuma bats.
Bat House Interpretive Trail Follow a 5km walk and learn about bat species, their habitat, predators and characteristics, while enjoying the lakefront community of Peachland. Start at the North or South Trail Head on Beach Avenue, following the shoreline of Lake Okanagan, and then meander an easy, level pathway along Trepanier Creek, into the woods for a 1km loop. The loop has viewings of 3, out of the 8 bat houses, and can be walked independently or inclusive of your trail experience. Along the way stop at the Peachland Visitor Centre and Legends of the Lake Interpretive

Centre, home to a colony of 2000 Yuma and Little brown bats. View, through live footage of the attic roost, man and bats successfully co-habiting and experience a local Bat Chat to learn about the educational program that turned the nuisance of bats in the attic into a local phenomena.
The Bat Education Ecological Protection Society (BEEPS) BEEPS created the Interpretive Trail as one component of their educational program, demonstrating how the use of bat houses provides habitat protection for this endangered and protected species. Bats roosting in the wild will often search out older trees, such as the common Ponderosa Pine or Cottonwood, sleeping under the bark. Although these trees are common to the Okanagan, they’re often removed due to safety, land development or the replacement of lower maintenance trees. As stewards of Peachland bats the Peachland Rotary Club and District of Peachland assisted in making the Interpretive Trail project a reality. This trail links to an expanded trail system in Peachland, allowing visitors and locals alike, to enjoy the scenic vistas offered by this quaint waterfront community.

The Bedford Trail Network
is accessible via Princeton Avenue, 9.1 km west of the intersection of Princeton Avenue and Highway 97. Its trailhead appears as a clearing on your right, with signage affixed to trees. The Bedford trails consist of numerous two-track resource roads, other routes interface with the main trail network, but only the core networks sport signage. Two-track extends northeast for 3 km, reaching Spring Lake before looping back to Princeton Avenue Connecting trails interface with the Lookout Loop.
The Lookout Loop
compliments the Bedford Trail Network, but is unique in providing access to arcing panoramic vistas north, south and east. The Loop trailhead appears as a pull-off approximately 8.8 km up Princeton Avenue on your right-hand side. This trail presents few challenges and offers excellent hiking cycling and equestrian adventures.
Hardy Falls
is located 230 m along Hardy Street, then 400 m along a wellkept Regional Park path. The wheelchair accessible route crosses seven bridges ending at a beautiful, secluded namesake waterfall. Its trail is well marked and easy to follow to its terminus. The boardwalk offers an extremely easy in and out route for all ages and abilities. This is a great location for viewing the Kokanee salmon swimming upstream in the fall months. Hike and bike friendly.
Pincushion Mountain
offers one of the most impressive viewpoints in this area. Its summit is accessible via a 2.75 km drive up Ponderosa Drive. Look for the obvious trailhead as a pullout on your right at a tight left-hand hairpin in the road. Pincushion’s steep singletrack route offers a challenge for much of its length and could be described as intermediate to advanced. Its steep trail renders it exclusively for hiking and trail-running activities.
Stavepipe Trail
is accessible from numerous points, including signed trailheads located at Pincushion Place via Sixth Avenue, Peachland Elementary School on Clements Crescent and the Trepanier Road/Okanagan Connector Overpass. The Trepanier entrance is located 6 km west along the Connector measured from the interchange on Highway 97 and Highway 97c. This access is charred from a 2012 wildfire. Suggested access is via Beach Avenue south of the small bridge that crosses Trepanier Crescent. Rated as easy for most of its length, the route is best suited to foot and mountain bike traffic.
Centennial Pathway
The Trepanier Trail
24
stretches from First to Thirteenth Street, hugging the beautiful Peachland downtown beaches. It provides sun, surf, sand and casual shopping at the many downtown retail establishments. Its paved surface is wheelchair accessible and provides a relaxing casual stroll. may be accessed via 6th Avenue, the Stavepipe Trail or the overpass along the Okanagan Connector. It follows Trepanier Crescent for 2.6 km between the Stavepipe trail and the Connector overpass. 2017 OFFICIAL VISITOR GUIDE for PEACHLAND BC

Peachland Celebrates Peachland is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Confederation with twenty-seven different events organized by local community groups. The celebrations began with a Scavenger Hunt at Peachland Historic School, that had participants scrambling to find 150 items of historic significance within and around the 1908 schoolhouse. They were followed by a Town Crier leading the opening ceremonies featuring Westbank First Nations dancers and drummers, a Maple Cookie Contest and Dan Albas, MP, presenting an official Canada 150 flag to the Mayor and Council representatives. The highlight of the year will be the July 1st Celebration, a Birthday Party filled with games 26

THINKING OF MOVING TO PEACHLAND? Experience of a Peachlander 2009 to present We came across Peachland by accident in 2007 when we were traveling from Vancouver to Kelowna, to experience what Canada had to offer and what area would fit our needs, after having decided to emigrate to Canada from the UK. Arriving in Peachland one sunny June afternoon, we were blown away (not literally I may add) by the fact that despite having 11km of beachfront, it had not been spoiled by highrise condos and still had some of its original buildings such as the Museum, the waterfront, and Sunnyside Market, which to us Brits, felt like the real Canada we read about. Up until then, we had been very disappointed by the other towns we had visited along the way which all looked very similar with no distinct downtown, let alone a downtown like Peachland, which is on the lake with its original buildings adding to its character. After returning to start our new life in Canada in September 2008, we thought we would look at some other places in the Okanagan, before making a final decision, but nothing could match Peachland, so we bought a home here in 2009. In fact, it is so beautiful living here, we purchased a house with the sole purpose of providing guest accommodation, so we would be able to share the amazing amenities we and this town have to offer, with other families, many of whom come back year after year. Peachland is not just about the views, but the people, who have got to be the friendliest we had ever met and we felt at home and accepted straight away. Unlike the popular saying that you are not considered a local until you have lived in a place 20 years, in Peachland, it is just the opposite. Our neighbors were great and we joined the Peachland Newcomers Club within the first month. I followed this by becoming a member of the women’s Friendship Group who have monthly meetings and where there is a huge list of spin-off interest groups to join, including a monthly lunch club. Within 6 months we had made more friends than we ever had before. We were also impressed by the numerous volunteers who help out at our Wellness Centre, Visitor Center, Art Gallery, and Senior Centre to name but a few. In fact, I am sure if there was a survey Peachland would have more non-profit clubs and volunteer organizations, per capita, than any other town in Canada. To sum up, being a Peachlander means you need never be lonely or be bored as there’s always an organization who could do with your help or could help you. You can pop out for a lakeside walk and end up dancing the night away to live music at one of the lakeside restaurants, or go straight to the ‘Letters to the Editor’ page in the Peachland View to see if yours or a friend’s letter has been printed. (Editors say how endearing it is to get so many letters from residents who care so passionately about their town.) Finally, being a Peachlander means you live in the most beautiful place, with the kindest, most caring, welcoming people you will ever get to meet. ~ GillIan Evans, Poolside Retreat B & B 42
