Paradise... just a bridge

PHOTO: BARRY YEATS

This is Peachland, a small community of about 5,400 people, situated along an almost endless section of Lake Okanagan. My name is Doris, and my husband and I have been living in Peachland since early 2008. We knew of the town when we still lived in Edmonton, Alberta. We made our annual Spring trip to the Okanagan for a taste of Summer while Alberta was still just getting out from under the snow. Like the many people who came before us to this part of BC, starting with the First Nations, the farmers, the miners and gold prospectors, the fruit and wine growers and all the holiday seekers, we were mesmerized by the tranquility of Okanagan Lake. After a few visits here we knew we wanted to retire to this part of Canada. It felt like a homecoming to us when we moved here, as if in spirit we had always been here. I am an outdoors person and like to hike or bike, or glide my kayak along the shoreline of Okanagan Lake. Peachland offers all of that and a lot more. Our town has an unprecedented 7 km of publicly accessible lake shore. The back country of Peachland invites hikers of all abilities to explore Nature. They say one has to do the hike up Pincushion Mountain before being called a true Peachlander. One of my favourite hikes is the Drought Hill Trail in Spring when the Arrowleaf Balsamroot flowers, aka the Okanagan Sunflowers, are in bloom and one walks through a carpet of yellow flowers. The purpose of this Peachland Visitor’s Guide is to assist visitors plan their stay in our community and also remind residents of all the activities that are waiting for them to explore in Peachland. We have a great arts community that engages the public with events like “Sip and Paint” held at various local restaurants every month. Our festivals are legendary, with Peachland’s World of Wheels bringing together car enthusiasts from across the Okanagan. Our Centennial Walkway along the beach is another favourite for visitors and residents alike. On Sundays during the Summer, we have a popular farmers market that offers vegetables and fruits grown in the region. On four Sundays during July and August, we can all enjoy the Rotary Peace Concerts in Heritage Park featuring a wide range of musical genres from Country and Western to Classical Opera.

and a hill away from the city Our restaurants combine good food with a great setting along the lake. Whether sitting in the Beer Garden of the Gasthaus on the Lake, the Beach Avenue Café or any other restaurant in town, the Lake is only a stone’s throw away while enjoying award winning cuisine. While Peachland has become a popular destination for tourists, it also features a special group of seasonal guests. Every Summer one of the largest Yuma bat colonies in BC takes up temporary residence in the attic of our old Schoolhouse. The bats have become a landmark of Peachland with exhibits in the Peachland Visitor Centre and along the Bat Trail. The presence of the bats has one great impact for Peachland – thanks to their appetite for bugs, our area is virtually mosquito-free! You see from my comments that there is so much to do in town and in our neighbourhood. And I haven’t begun to talk about the many wineries that have popped up in the Okanagan. Wine tours ranging from 3 hours to a whole day can be booked with local operators. The added benefit of this is one does not have to worry about driving or potentially missing a winery worth visiting. Visitors and locals who enjoy being on-line can access a dozen beacons from the north to the south entrances of Peachland, as well as the free WIFI system in the downtown core. Speaking as a resident, I like living in a small town and at the same time being relatively close to a larger population centre, such as Kelowna. That is why I chose to title this message Paradise... just a bridge and a hill away from the City. I welcome you to explore our little town—it may be the beginning of a great and lasting friendship! ~ Doris Muhs

DID YOU KNOW? Along Peachland’s Centennial Pathway, you’ll notice a ‘buffer zone’ of tall grass, lavender and other colourful plants between the pathway and Beach Avenue. These act as both a pleasant border between pedestrian and vehicle traffic and also as a bio filter, protecting the lake from road runoff! 3

2018 OFFICIAL VISITOR GUIDE for PEACHLAND BC

A PEACHLANDER’S STORY

Why we love it here! A vacation vibe was in the air, as we sipped our wine amongst happy tourists and locals on the Gasthaus’ sunny patio. With our kids back home in Calgary, it was easy to forget we only had two days left to buy a house. Sensing our stress, our Realtor had suggested we take a quick trip down the highway and go for lunch in Peachland. Gazing across Beach Avenue at the glistening lake and Okanagan Mountain in the background, we felt suddenly at ease. “Maybe we should drive around and see what the houses are like here?” The rest, as they say, is history. A few months later, our two young kids helped us plant a pair of apple trees in our new backyard. Life in Peachland is amazing, and it’s not just because of the lake (we have the longest stretch of public waterfront around!) We also have tons of walking trails and the kids love running through the forest right outside our door. Everything we need shopping-wise is close by (including wineries!); there are tons of fun community events and activities to choose from; and our local school is part of the whole community. I think that’s the biggest plus for Peachland, actually. People look out for each other here. They pitch in, and they’re happy. Maybe it’s because we appreciate where we live: lake views, gardening, wineries, hiking trails, food and fun – it’s the Okanagan dream, and Peachlanders get to live it year round!

!

Peachland BC now has an exciting new way to access all the latest Peachland fun right to your mobile device or tablet! We have our very own beacon program right here in the community.

What’s a beacon, you ask?

It is simple to participate!

A beacon is an intentionally conspicuous device designed to send select information to you, our Peachland visitors. They provide important information that you will want to know about! You will have an inside track on sales at our local shops, special menu options at local restaurants, activities to make your trip the best ever and attractions you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss! The great thing about beacons is that they are always there, rain or shine, day or night! Our beacons are placed strategically around town always willing to provide you, our visitor, with all kinds of information, 24/7!

Download the app ‘Physical Web’ on your smartphone – whatever version is compatible. Turn on your notifications and you’re set! The best part is you can download the app at the Visitor Centre; we have free WiFi! When you are near a beacon you will receive a notification on your phone, click the notification and Peachland will be at your fingertips, it’s that simple!

TRAILS

Please clean up after yourself and your pet, leaving only your footprint and the memories in your heart.

Pincushion Mountain

Fur Brigade Trail

is accessible from a dirt road, high above Hardy Street, past Hardy Falls. Continue past the Hardy Falls parking area winding up the narrow paved road, Thorne Road. Bear left at the fork, taking the gravel road towards BK Oarchards. Turn your car around when you see the orchard, parking 50m down on the right side, near the trail head. There are two trails going south. The lower one takes you to the Fur Brigade Trail. The trail slowly ascends with varing grades; be cautious due to the loose gravel. It is a great pet friendly, family hike with amazing views at the top. Hiking down continue 100m, turning left to see signage for the Fur Brigade Trail Linear Park and more incredible views.

Stavepipe Trail

is accessible from numerous points, including signed trailheads located at Pincushion Place via Sixth Avenue, Peachland Elementary School on Clements Crescent and the Trepanier Road/Okanagan Connector Overpass. Suggested access is via Beach Avenue south of the small bridge that crosses Trepanier Crescent. Rated as easy for most of its length, the route is best suited to foot and mountain bike traffic.

The Trepanier Trail

Hardy Falls

offers one of the most impressive viewpoints in this area. Its summit is accessible via a 2.75 km drive up Ponderosa Drive. Look for the obvious trailhead as a pullout on your right at a tight left-hand hairpin in the road. Pincushion’s steep singletrack route offers a challenge for much of its length and could be described as intermediate to advanced. Its steep trail renders it exclusively for hiking and trail-running activities. See picture at top of page

may be accessed via 6th Avenue, the Stavepipe Trail or the overpass along the Okanagan Connector. It follows Trepanier Crescent for 2.6 km between the Stavepipe trail and the Connector overpass. is located off Hardy Street. This route crosses seven bridges ending at a beautiful, secluded namesake waterfall. The boardwalk offers an extremely easy in and out route for all ages and abilities. This is a great location for viewing the Kokanee salmon swimming upstream in the fall months. NOTE: Closed in 2018 due to flood damage from 2017.

The World of Wheels is Peachland’s largest one day event, drawing a crowd of up to 10,000 spectators. This year is our 21st annual show. Last year we had 550 cars and trucks, including vintage boats and motorcycles. When you attend the World of Wheels you will see many classic cars and trucks that you just don’t see anymore, and for some people these classics bring back memories of days gone by. We are very proud to have been awarded the Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence award for Excellence in Tourism/ Hospitality for four years now. Our show has become a community event with merchandise and food vendors, as well as a bouncy castle for the kids and live music all day. The whole community is also open for business with our boutique shops and great restaurants. This year’s World of Wheels is from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm along Beach Avenue, with vehicles spanning eight city blocks. Hope to see you here on May 20th, 2018. Sincerely, Pam Cunningham, World of Wheels Chairperson 2018 OFFICIAL VISITOR GUIDE for PEACHLAND BC
