Welcome to Peach The Editor’s Column
Welcome to the first edition of Peach! From one Pixar fan to another, I’m excited that our inner Pixar fandom has a publication to relate to. The 42 Wallaby Way development team & those behind Peach have worked hard to get this publication, and our site, up and running. We’ve had fun throwing ideas around, designing the publication, tediously working to get the final dynamic bits of code for the website running, and working towards finishing this issue, with included contacting sources to get copyright approval, to get Peach off the press in the space of two months. Now, for your part - enjoy the magazine! A particular mention to the Ratatouille crossword located on the Games page - go print it off and complete it! If you enjoy this magazine, go tell your Pixar-loving friends about this magazine. The Peach Team aims to produce an issue every couple of months, and if you can, go and contribute to the magazine, even if it is just a little opinion piece on why you’re jumping up and down for Newt. Or Up. Or Toy Story 3. ... to infinity and beyond!

Countdown to Up REVIEWS Respected bloger Larry Fire (larryfire.wordpress.com) had obtained an opportunity to watch an early (and unfinished) screening of Up. Larry stated on how secretive Pixar is when it comes to these screenings. “We had no idea what movie we were going to watch until we entered the theater and were giddy to find out it was “Up” as we are avid fans of animated movies,” Larry stated. When it came to critiquing the movie, he was full of praise for the 87-minute film, and, despite it’s unfinished, barely watching state, he particularly mentioned the portrayal as a film as unexpected - one, about how this turned out as a pseudo-coming of age film, emphasized with the completely unexpected relationship (however that is) with Carl, an elderly man, and Russell, a loud, persistent 8-year-old, and how the adventure gives Carl a new lease on life. “I would definitely recommend this movie to family and friends as the animation that we saw was top notch,” Larry said. “We generally cared for the major characters and found the story to be unique although a little morose compared to other Pixar fare.” MERCHANDISE Up is not yet released, yet it’s starting to turn out as a big commercial entity, rolling in the Peach May 2009 42wallabyway.net
cash for Pixar & Disney. We can expect the usual merchandise with Up, including Carl/Russell/ Kevin/Dug plushes & plastic toys, posters (already released), and more. Coming out very soon are Up books, including junior books, a “Little Golden” Up book, and a collectible coffee-table book, The Art Of Up, providing a 250page insight into the development of the movie. OPINIONS Up is causing quite a stir on Pixar fan destinations. On the Pixar fan forum Pixar Planet, there is Up fever throughout the forums discussions include the latest teaser to speculations on the characters. Even mainstream media is picking up on the movie - the New York Times, The Guardian, Reuters, and CCTV and several trusted media associations have all produced articles on the movie. --42wallabyway.net
Carl & Russell
Carl Fredricksen The Protagonist Carl is a retired 78-year-old. Previously a balloon salesman, he was bereaved by his wife, Ellie, who had a grand idea of escaping to South America, but died before she was able to achieve her dreams. Carl decides to achieve her dreams in place of her when he is nearly forced to move to an assisted living home. Using his balloon expertise, he ties up thousands of baloons to his house, and he floats away to the Venezuelan jungle.
Russell The Sidekick Russell is a “wilderness explorer”/boy scout stowaway who gets dragged along on Carl’s adventure, after attempting to perform a menial task to obtain his last badge, the “Help the Elderly” badge. Despite Carl’s natural grumpiness towards him (being old), Russell remains quite optimistic & reveals he is quite adventurous. He befriends a magnificent tropical bird he names Kevin. Wall-E
The Wall-E 500 Challenge Why one Pixar fan is watching the Hello Dolly-loving robot 500 times
M
any Pixar fans are known for obsessively watching their favourite Pixar films. A handful of die-hard fans might watch the films repeatedly for up to 100 times. But there’s one Pixar fan that plans to watch Wall-E not 100, not 200, not even 400, but a massive 500 times! Pixar Planet user EVEisawesome seems like a typical Wall-E fan - he owns many items of Wall-E merchandise, which included one occasion where he took one an EVE toy to his 3rd screening of the film. On July 16, 2008, before the release of Wall-E on DVD, he stated on the Pixar Planet forums that he has set a challenge. And so began his adventure of conquering a massive feat - by watching the Academy Award-winning feature film 500 times. Described as “the ultimate challenge”, EVEisawesome (also known as EIA) is committed to completing his feat by loading the movie onto his laptop & his iPod Video. There’s one more thing. He plans to complete this feat under two years. In order to complete this incredible challenge, EIA needs to watch it in an average of one full viewing page 6
every 35 hours. So far, he’s already completed 1/5th of the feat - at the time of writing, he has viewed the film 127 times. EIA is absolutely committed to complete his mission, and it seems he’s been able to find time to. For example, at one time he went on a road trip to Colorado, an apparent 15-hour drive each way. EIA had found time to fit a potential 7 viewings into that trip. EIA is well-equipped - despite having the resources to constantly watch the film nearly continuously- with his own Dell Mini 9, his iPod Video, his brother’s MacBook, and a Wall-E DVD, he has run into problems - most notably, the run-ins with his iPod! As many iPod owners will know, iPod batteries have quite the need for a regular charge, but EIA gets so much viewings done that he complains that his iPod is, understandably, constantly out-of-battery. EIA has stated that this causes a few problems when the time is perfect to cram another one in, which did included one incident where he plugged his iPod into another computer to charge, the iPod synced to that computer, had wiped Wall-E out of the iPod
and had missed out on a potential 3 viewings. Consequently, there are implications that ought to happen when you watch a twohour film 500 times, particularly the emotional attachment to the movie. EIA has said on the Pixar Planet forums: “The more I watch the movie the more I feel closer to it. Watching it from start to finish seems about 30 minutes long, and the only time I wish it’d hurry up and get over is the second time EVE goes to the captain with the plant.” Many fellow Pixar fans are captivated by the challenge. One forum member said jokingly, “I thought my seeing Ratatouille about 35 times was beyond sanity”, and another said, “I personally wouldn’t want to try [this]! Good luck!” This could also be a Guinness World Record in the making. So, EVEisawesome has 127 views of Wall-E under his belt. We hope that he can complete the big figure of 500 in under the projected time of two years. 42wallabyway.net

Toy Story
Woody’s Roundup in 3D In 2009 & 2010, us Pixar fans can get to re-live the Toy Story experience once again - in 3D
T
he Toy Story movies has a sentimental value to us Pixar fans. It’s the first full-length feature by Pixar, it’s the first fully computergenerated film, and, well, the relationship between Woody & Buzz isn’t replaceable. So, in anticipation of the release of Toy Story 3 in 2010, Pixar is rereleasing Toy Story & Toy Story 2 in 2009 & 2010 respectively. From the emotional scenes of Buzz & Woody “falling in style”, to a “little depressed” Buzz dressed as “Mrs. Nesbit”, to Jessie’s heartbreaking retelling of her story while Sarah McLachlan sings “When She Loves Me”, we get to re-live the story through a new way through Disney Digital 3D. Pixar’s 10th film, Up, will be the first Pixar feature to be released in the three-dimensional technology. Toy Story 3, the upcoming third film in the Toy Story franchise, is due to be released in 3D also. This signals the suit of Pixar starting to embrace the use of 3D technology. Pixar has already given us a sneek peek at the re-release they had released to the public a re-rendered frame of a scene Peach May 2009 42wallabyway.net
in Toy Story - Buzz & Woody riding the RV toy, chasing the moving van - in 3D. If you possess 3D glasses, we’ve reproduced the photo - grab them and take a look at the photo! This is not something to be expected of the movie Pixar uses the technology from the mother company, Disney, to produce the 3D animations and releases the movie to cinemas digitally, providing a far more superior quality compared to conventional 3D. This is something similar to the film produced by competing animation studio, Dreamworks, with Monsters vs. Aliens 3D. Many are concerned for the quality of the film, as many 2D to 3D conversions produce a poor result and many complain that the pizazz of 3D does not add to the storyline (or any value) to Toy Story. Furthermore, many more are more concerned that if only a few portions of the films are reproduced in 3D, then viewers will need to constantly
distracted because viewers will be worrying if the scene is requiring the 3D glasses. These views have been picked up by many in the media, one of those is respected technology journalist Leo Laporte, who was complaining about this in This Week In Tech (TWIT). But most, even those who are critical of the 3D reproduction, look forward to re-watching one of Pixar’s most glorious films to date, and most, if not, all, agree, that this will increase anticipation and hype for the upcoming release of Toy Story 3. And most agree that the experience is going to be great - from the action in the gliding scenes, to Andy’s playtime, to Jessie & Woody’s escape out of the plane, creating an impromptu recreation of a scene in Woody’s Roundup, all Pixar fans are excited for the rereleases. 42wallabyway.net page 7
Countdown to Up
What’s Up with Up? Don’t know what’s “Up” with the hype? Peach reader Al-Bob gives the low-down on Pixar’s new movie
B
y now every single Pixar fan should know that Up is the next predicted film to be released. Directed by Pete Doctor and scheduled to be released on May 29, 2009, this feature film will have many firsts. It will be the first Pixar film in 3D and will also be the first Pixar film to be released in a recession. These two things may be ones to look at when the results come in. Unlike Wall-E, which was talked about for months, Up has been held somewhat secret and no major details about plot or storyline has been revealed. So what do we know? Our main characters as of today are definitely Carl Fredrickson and a boy Scout from Troop 54 named Russell. When Carl Fredrickson decides living in an assisted home isn’t worth it he sets his mind upon doing what he does best; balloons and travel. Being a balloon salesman Frederick has loads lying around the house so instead of going to the assisted living house that his family wants him to go to he decides to continue his promise to his deceased wife Ellie by traveling to South America. The problem isn’t why he did it, but how he does it. Instead of traveling by car or train which would be safer, Carl decides to fly. But not just your page 8
average airliner... he decides to fly his house! That’s right, Mr. Fredrickson decides to “inflate” his house so that he may travel to South America at “his own pace in his own space”. Unfortunately for Carl the stowaway named Russell happens to be on his porch right before lift-off and gets “stuck” on the trip. The two then fly together (first class of course) towards the jungles of South America. From what the trailers and special clips have told us Russell is one badge away from being an honorary Senior Wilderness Explorer even though he never has been outside of the city. Carl’s reason behind his trip is quite unknown except for the fact that it is part of a promise he made to his wife. Reasons behind the trip are vague and we hope to fully expose those when Up comes out. We have no real information about what they intend to do in South America but as the details have been seeped out, my conclusion is that Carl has always wanted to find a Snipe. In one of the trailers his information about Snipe habits portrays his excellent knowledge of the bird. I believe that Carl was trying to find this rare and extremely colorful bird.
Russel another gang of explorers are already in South America and are not very nice to say the least. Charles Muntz, inventor of the talking collar for dogs, is searching for the rare and extremely fabulous Snipe for which he will become famous and rich. With his hot air balloon and pack of talking dogs, his quest comes to a high peak when one of his more lazy and nerdy dogs actually finds a snipe but instead of leading it back to Muntz, leads it to Carl and Russell by accident. This sets off a chain reaction with the new explorers as they are thrown into the fray for the bird. With dogs and bi-planes, hot air balloons and deep canyons, the adventure only seems to get better and better for our friends! Coming May 29, 2009, Up seems to be the last of the first decade of Pixar movies dating back to Toy Story. Since Toy Story there has been Bugs, More Toys, Monsters, Fish and Seafood, Superheros, Animated Cars, as well as Rats, and Robots. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is willing to go. It promises adventure, comedy, and some decision making by certain characters. This movie definitely has the feel of an Incredibles film, a storyline like a Cars adventure, and a comedy feel like Monsters Inc. -- Al-Bob for 42wallabyway.net

Pixar on Hulu? Soon.
42 Wallaby Way Newsdesk According to a credible news source inside the media, the Hulu / Disney deal talks will finish up anytime from now. Hulu is a “website that offers commercial-supported streaming video of TV shows and movies” (en. wikipedia), in conjunction with three of four major US networks. Currently, Hulu is only available in the US. According to the source, Disney is negotiating with an exclusive deal with Hulu - that means that Disney-affiliated content will only be available from one online source Hulu.
There was one major mention with the source, and which will appeal to all US Pixar fans - Pixar films received a very particular mention, specifically stating that all the Pixar films will be available online. This means that US internet users will be able to hop on the Hulu site at any time, and watch A Bugs Life, The Incredibles, Toy Story, or any other current Pixar film at any time. (Adsupported, of course.) Hulu is only available to US viewers.
