FIGURING OUT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE Written by Lauren Katriel If you're in your last year of school like I am, you might be freaking out just as much as I was. Where do I study? What do I study? Do I even want to study? The never ending stream of questions about what the hell it is we want to do with our lives. We are pretty much expected to jump straight into the next part of our lives with grace and ease but the truth is, it's super scary.

and what career I wanted to pursue and... you get the picture. It wasn't until one of the universities in my city came to my high school to talk about the things they had to offer. One of the courses they mentioned really stuck with me. I was really passionate about it and I didn't even realise I could study it before then! There are literally thousands of different courses and combinations of courses you can study, not just the classics you would expect, so remember to really get stuck in with your research. However, for some people, finding something you definitely

I myself was getting insanely stressed because I had no idea what my passions were and what I wanted to do with my life

Peachy Magazine want to spend years studying is near impossible, even with the huge choice. But that’s ok. After discovering the course I then had a chat with my parents, who gave me some really useful advice. One of the main things I was really worried about was that I would end up wasting money on something I turned out to hate. My parents then told me that nothing could be a waste because no matter what I would get something out of it. Instead of always wondering if I would ever have liked doing a certain thing, I would then know that I actually don't and can move onto the next thing with certainty. Basically, wasting time is actually never a waste. Everything is experience and everything is useful.

you'll see that there is so much you can apply for. Don't be scared to apply for as many as you can. You can't win scholarships you don't apply for!

Like most other students, I was also worried about money and paying for further education in the first place. But really, you don't have to pay for it all on your own, there is so much help out there. Just look up scholarships in your area and

For those people who don't know what to study, think of it this way: if a painter or an author had to deeply think about every tiny aspect of their painting or novel, they would probably never get round to doing a single thing. However, if you have a basic idea of what you enjoy, just pursue that with all of your might. You can’t go far wrong doing what you love. If you’re not sure what you love, get out there and experience everything you can until you find it. You can’t figure out your interests sitting on the couch at home. It’s also important to remember that we are all so pressured to go to uni or college right after we finish school, but there are so many other options. Travel, go straight into work, or just live life! I still don’t have my whole life perfectly mapped out, but I no longer expect myself to and that’s what’s truly important. ◙

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS ‘TOO YOUNG’ Teens are often confined by the idea that we’re “too young” to be successful and make an impact. Just because we’re still in school and not yet of legal drinking age, doesn’t mean we can’t do something big. If you’re still unsure, just take a look at these teenagers who are running the world. NOTE: if you’re a teen and are not currently running the world, don’t let that get you down. You have plenty of time to get where you want to be.

ZENDAYA, 19 Zendaya first made her mark as Rocky Blue in Disney Channel’s Shake It Up. Since then, she has released her own album, been the youngest contestant on Dancing with the Stars and is now the star of new Disney Channel show, K.C. Undercover. Zendaya has also modeled for the front cover of Galore, Hunger, Teen Vogue and W. She was recently immortalized with her own dreadlocked one-of-a-kind Barbie doll.

TAVI GEVINSON, 19 Tavi founded blog Style Rookie when she was just 12; the blog became so popular she began to receive prestigious invitations to couture runway shows, sitting front row at Dior before her 13th birthday. In 2011 Tavi moved away from fashion and towards feminism and founded online magazine Rookie to collate articles on issues impacting teenage girls. She still edits the website now, releasing her favourite articles annually in the Rookie Yearbook. She’s also a talented actress and is set to star in the upcoming Broadway show, The Crucible.

IT’S TIME TO END GIRL HATE Written by Ema Brazdeikyte Photos by Natalie Liao Have you ever despised a girl from a distance? Every time you heard her name you automatically thought of something negative to say about her? Society has taught us from an early age that apparently there could only be one cool girl, one funny girl, one beautiful girl etc. And that’s where girl hate comes in. Girl hate is not hating someone that’s a girl, it’s hating someone because, as girls, we’re taught that we’re supposed to hate

how some girls could be as or more extraordinary than us. You’re not a terrible person for feeling resentment towards another girl; you’ve just grown up exposed to sexist movies and media about how girl competition is relevant to getting a boyfriend or being the prom queen. There are loads of terrible romantic-comedies where girls just keep putting each other down. Not to

10

BEAUTY

Peachy Magazine say all girls are angels from heaven. There are genuinely some girls that aren’t nice people but hopefully you’re able to differentiate between disliking a girl because she’s a better singer than you and disliking a girl because she’s a bully. Sometimes I get a little jealous. Especially when I see girls that are younger than me doing amazing things. One half of me is saying, “You go girl!” but the other half of me is saying, “Why can’t that be me? Why is she so much more successful?” If you ever experience this just know that you’re amazing and there’s not a single person as unique as you are. Focus on your journey and congratulate others on theirs. It took me a long time to realise that negativity is tiring and hating people is stressful.

celebrate girls who are going against such views? So, let’s not continue this in the long run. I mean we don’t want girl hate to turn to woman hate to turn to granny hate. That’s way too much hating, even for an angsty teenager like myself. Not to mention it just wastes valuable energy that you could be putting to use somewhere else. Next time you see that girl maybe think of all the positives about her. Don’t let yourself get pent up in jealousy just because she posted what appears to be the perfect selfie. Think positively, not negatively.

“LET’S NOT BRING EACH OTHER DOWN, INSTEAD LET’S LIFT EACH OTHER UP” Back to this girl you hate. Why don’t you like her? You barely know her. Did you hear rumours about her acting slutty at a party yesterday? Is it the way she can pull off any look? There’s a difference between confidence and self-absorption. Maybe the girl you hate on just has a ton of confidence… and that’s rad! I think confidence is seen as something negative when it should be seen as a positive. Just because that girl learned to love herself, doesn’t make her a bad person. Confidence is not a crime. Ever since the dawn of time girls have been told to be quiet, modest and most importantly to “stay in their place”. Shouldn’t we

We’re all young adults and teenagers here; we’re all dealing with weird and often unwanted feelings all the time. Try to get to know a person before pointing out all the negatives. Maybe she’ll end up being one of your closest friends. Let’s celebrate all the awesomeness that girls have to offer. Don’t conform to society’s ideas that girl hate is the way to deal with your problems. It’s not. As women, we have been told to keep our heads down for far too long. Let’s not bring each other down, instead let’s lift each other up. ◙

HOW TO ROCK A BOLD LIP The colder seasons are upon us, which naturally means it is time to pull out that dark lip. However, there is a fine line between fierce and just plain scary when it comes to application. Lauren Katriel gives you her top tips for getting a perfect bold pout.

STEP 1: Exfoliate.

STEP 5: Powder.

This is so important because dark lips are very unforgiving with dry flakes. Scrub those lips with some sugar and oil, or even a dry toothbrush. See page 13 for some more luxurious lip scrub recipes!

Use an eye shadow brush or your finger to load up on translucent powder or one that matches your skin tone and powder the outsides of the lips.

STEP 6: Rock it.

STEP 2: Moisturise.

Rocking a bold lip ultimately comes down to one thing: confidence. So go out with your fabulously dark lips and enjoy rocking your favourite shade this winter!

Now that the dead stuff is off, apply lip chap to prevent flakes from reappearing. This also prevents your lips from drying out because dark lipstick is quite drying. Ideally apply the lip chap 10 minutes before applying your lip colour.

STEP 3: Apply lip liner.

This creates a sharp edge between your lips and your face and prevents your lipstick from feathering out. Use a lip liner that is similar to your lipstick shade, your actual lip colour, or a clear lip liner.

STEP 4: Apply the lipstick!

This one is pretty obvious; apply your favourite lipstick! Figure out what kinds of shades suit you and stick to those; some people can rock red and others look perfect in purple. A small flat brush is easiest to use to apply lipstick neatly in the lines.

DESTROY THE GENDER ROLES Written by Ema Brazdeikyte We’ve grown up in a world where people have been subconsciously fed what a man and woman’s role in society is. My own mother grew up being the “housekeeper” while her brothers played. Since I am the only female besides my mother in my family, she makes me do the cooking and cleaning because she considers this to be normal. When I try to argue about why my brothers aren’t helping, my parents simply tell me “they are boys.” How does being a boy automatically make you unable to help around the house? Why is cooking and cleaning a job for women? This is just one of the many gender roles that are ingrained in society.

Why can’t a woman enjoy a single life without being badgered by questions regarding children and men. Why do we see single men as power-driven and someone who can’t be tied down but when we see single women it’s automatically assumed that they’re lonely and sad? There’s nothing wrong with not having kids and there’s nothing wrong with having 10 kids. There is so much pressure for women to fit people’s ideals, just let us live our lives. Gender roles are extremely constricting, it’s ridiculous.

One of the male gender roles society has adopted is that if you’re “a man” you shouldn't show any emotion. Even today, you can see this exact thing being shown in the media. I can recall countless times where a male is crying in a movie and either someone makes fun of him or tells him to “be a man!” This is toxic, especially for young viewers. I have also personally seen fathers pull their teary eyed sons after basketball games and tell them, “big boys don’t cry”. How are these boys supposed to react? They’re going to think that crying makes them weak. They’re going to tell themselves to never cry. Suppressing these emotions in the long run could really damage a person, leading to a potential mental illness.

Photo: Kaitlyn Ham

These expectations that are placed upon us even before we are born need to be trashed. Things are improving. Teenagers and young adults are becoming more and more educated and more and more accepting. Perhaps we can’t stop the older generation from accepting the fact that gender roles are shortsighted, but we can definitely unite as a generation to stop these disturbing expectations from continuing. ◙

Another gender role I can’t seem to wrap my head around is that women are expected to be the nurturing and caring one of any family unit. And if a woman doesn’t want a family, they are told they will regret it, or they will change their mind because apparently you need children and a husband to be fulfilled.

LIP SCRUB LOVE Written by Jasmin Gonzalez As the weather gets colder, winter gets closer and what better way to greet it than with a pair of soft, hydrated lips? Here are two DIY recipes for yummy lip scrubs that you can keep for yourself or gift to your loved ones. Just make sure you have a small container handy in which you can place your lip scrub.

PEPPERMINT SCRUB First up is a Peppermint lip scrub, for this you’ll need: • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil • 3 teaspoons of organic coarse sugar (although regular sugar should be okay!) • 1 teaspoon of honey (agave may be used as well!) • 5 drops of peppermint oil (or any other essential oil you prefer!) Now, melt the coconut oil in the microwave (if not already melted) then combine all the ingredients together. Allow it to cool down for a bit before placing it in your small container and presto! You can either keep it handy near your bed or shower or place it in the fridge to keep it set.

LEMON SUGAR SCRUB Second is a Lemon Sugar lip scrub! For this you’ll need: • 3 tablespoons of white sugar • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (you may also use grapeseed, jojoba, or almond oil!) • 5 drops of lemon essential oil Again, simply melt the coconut oil, combine the ingredients, and voila! Feel free to play around with the amount of sugar, coconut oil, and essential oil you use as you can easily change the consistency and scent of your lip scrub to your preference. Both of these lip scrubs are all natural and will leave your lips feeling fresh, soft, and ready to greet winter with a kiss!

PLAN THE PERFECT TRAVEL EXPERIENCE Written by Pluto Irving My family and I are travellers; we love seeing new places and trying all new things (we make sure to always try to weirdest things because a) it’s fun and b) it makes for great stories). My family is probably the reason I have so much wanderlust in my veins. Travelling has always been my number one priority, and my family and I always make sure to get the most out of our adventures. My life long dream is to travel the world and I know many people are like me and love the thrill of going somewhere completely new. Well, I got some

fantastic tips for you, and I hope you’re ready for the ride! Plan way, way, way ahead. You don’t want it to be already June, trying to find cheap flights to somewhere great and only getting the expensive ones because they are all taken. You need to plan at least 6-4 months before your trip. Sounds extreme? Hell no. You get to find the cheapest flights and great deals with time on your side. Try out every airline to find the best and cheapest ticket for your flight. It will be a hassle but you have to put in the time to get the reward. My

beautiful only to ask the question, “so what now?” If you are going on a group trip, assign roles. In my family my dad holds the pre-planning role. He plans where to go, when, and how. This includes finding a place to stay and the flight there and back. My mom is the restaurant role. For each day we are there she researches the places we want to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. My sister and I are the fun roles. We find what to do on what days. We find which museums to go to, which tours to participate in, and which sites to see. However, if you are like me and you hate having an exact schedule all the time, sacrifice a day to just explore with no restrictions. Really explore. I always keep a day where my family and I get up late, find some local restaurant to eat at and walk around the place we are staying. Usually by this method, we get the feel of the place we are in. These spontaneous days are probably my favourites.

The flights, honestly, are the easiest part. Finding a place to stay? That’s the hard part. Get ready to sit on your butt for hours trying to find your dream accommodation. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve sat with my dad for several hours trying to find a place to stay. Luckily, for our European trip we found the best site to do so. Now, I have a big family, and we all like our own space (especially bathrooms) so hotels aren’t really our thing. We prefer to rent out apartments or houses for our stay, and the sites we were looking at were insanely over our budget. But then we discovered this site. Airbnb is by far the greatest place to find your home in another country, state or continent. You can rent out beautiful apartments for an amazing price right in the place you are staying. When I went to Barcelona for our Big European Adventure, we stayed in the heart of the city. Finding a beautiful apartment in the city is a hassle right? Not with Airbnb. We found a gorgeous penthouse apartment (completely in our budget) that looked over the city with a view so beautiful I never wanted to leave. Research. I cannot stress this part enough. It’s a simple step really, but make sure you research the place you want to adventure to. Just to make sure they aren’t having some civil war, or people rioting in the streets, or some disease going around. It’s just for precaution, and your own well-being. It’s also important to research what the weather will be like when you go. You don’t want to show up wearing a short dress when it’s hailing outside.

Photos: Emma Lucey

The most important thing though is to bring people you want to be with. Travelling with people you want to be with makes the trip, whether it be the next town over or half way across the world, 100 times better. ◙

Make sure you plan what you want to do before you get there. You don’t want to finally arrive somewhere

BEE AWARE Written by Jasmin Gonzalez As we all know, bees play a vital role in our environment. They pollinate approximately 30 percent of the world’s crops, 90 percent of wildflowers, and also serve as indicator species. The quality of a bee’s life reflects the state of ecosystems around the world which helps determine current environmental conditions. Considering that the disappearance of bees began in 2006 and since then they have been found dying in masses. This enormous disappearing of bees is known as Colony Collapse Disorder. It is evident that there is something seriously wrong and we need your help to fix it!

The cause of their disappearance, although now obvious, had been deemed a mystery for quite some time. Insecticides, especially, Neonicotinoids affect bees in a negative way; they hinder a bee’s memory and their ability to navigate. This results in a food shortage for bees, which causes them to be sent out once again to gather more food instead of caring for younger bees (theatlantic). Global warming also plays a factor, with flowers blooming earlier and therefore being out of sync with bees’ hibernation cycles. Finally, habitat loss also poses a danger to the bees. All of this, over time, has deteriorated bee colonies and the quality of the pollination process on our crops. In the United States alone, more than 25 per cent of the managed honey bee population has disappeared since 1990.

TIPS FOR THRIFTING Written by Lauren Katriel Thrift shopping is an amazing thing, if you know what you’re doing. There are so many wonderful treasures for great deals. However, the sheer amount of stuff in thrift shops can be overwhelming, and it may feel like you can never find anything. Here are a few tips to help you thrift as well as Macklemore.

1. Look through everything. Don't limit your searches to just your size or department, as items can be misplaced to other sections. Some of my greatest finds have been from the men’s section! Also, sometimes sizes aren't on the clothes so the store has to guess, which means a medium could end up in extra large if it appears oversized. 2. Take your time. There are a lot of items to sift through so be sure to take a look at everything. Going through each section will help you spot things you might not have seen at a quick glance. 3. Go often. New items get put out throughout the week, sometimes even everyday. If you are looking for something in particular, go more than once because items disappear fast and new things are always being donated. 4. Don't buy just because it's cheap. Yes, those printed pants are only 5 dollars when they are normally 40 but how often do you see yourself wearing them? It's easy to buy things based on the price and not on their functionality in our wardrobe, so think about each item as if it was full price. 5. Don't give up! Most times we think that we are never going to find something, but don't lose hope. Persistence and patience are key. 19

EXERCISES IN CREATIVITY Written by Maya Caskie Photo by Isabella Spadone Unfortunately, I often find myself in a state of stagnation regarding my creativity and this has a pretty strong correlation on my mood. Therefore over time I have collected a few gems of knowledge that usually help me break out of these funks and hand me a little shred of inspiration.

This stage for me is something as simple as sitting on the front seat on the second level of a double-decker bus and enjoying the city-view panorama. Nothing makes me happier than this simple pleasure in the morning, primarily because it’s a refreshingly different visual experience from my everyday gravitationally-dictated little life. Different perspectives, not just mentally but also physically is my juiciest source of creative openness (read: weirdness). The simple visual trigger of a luxuriously broad window on the top level of a double-decker bus has conjured images of whales swimming through clouds like planets and kite-like steampunk flying machines; little trinkets of ideas that were stored carefully away

Deadlines. This is something I discovered only recently, and as strange as it seems an imminent deadline has drastically improved my creative juices. Having an ambitious deadline set for the completion of a particular project forces you to grit your teeth, buckle down and get on with the bloody thing, and once you’re submerged in the work you’ll find yourself in love with the deep water. For me a definitive and very visible end-goal acts as rocket-fuel for me to finish creating. And before I know it I’ve finished a piece of work that would have taken forever in only a few days. As counter-intuitive as it seems, not planning too much can also work wonders. For me the biggest demolisher of my creative energy is my tendency to obsess over theory and never enter the practical stages of my work. The constant planning of a concept that I originally loved meant that over the weeks, I’d grow to find my idea boring, unoriginal and generic. By all means, draw up a plan of your idea but don’t let your collection of ideas stew and fester. You’ll be left with pieces of potentially brilliant ideas, in stages of half-finished, tinkered with or never even started, all due to the procrastination of the most simple of tasks.

for later use. Believe it or not, these small things have helped lift the heavy film of stagnation from my creative efforts and the expansion of my creativity honestly has done wonders for my general happiness. ◙

Find inspiration and new perspectives.

THE ARTISTIC CAREER Whether you want to design beautiful buildings like the Getty Centre (below), or make the art that goes in it, if you want to pursue an artistic career someone has probably told you at one time or another that creativity isn’t the best way to make money. Maya Caskie explains why you shouldn’t listen to them. and competitive. Their worries may be well-founded, but they do not quite seem to realise the effect this discouragement can cause. I now find it difficult to confidently inform the people around me – even my own grandparents – that I would like to pursue an artistic career, which ironically is one of the worst things one could do when treading the less-worn career paths. Time and time again it has been proven that to become a successful artist you must be unapologetically assertive and sure of both yourself and what you want. All the best writers, painters, musicians have all been subjected to waves of rejection only to cling on even more stubbornly to their passions and the straws of opportunities they are given. If you’re anything like me praise is the best fuel for more creative energy, but a thick skin is essential in an artist’s starter kit and the grotesquely cheesy “believe in yourself” motto is also going to come in very handy. So, the next time a family member tells you that perhaps being a vet would be the better way to go, ignore them. Have the self-assurance to know that this is your passion, this is what you’re good at and this is what you are going to do.

So you’ve decided you want to pursue an artistic career. You’ve probably acknowledged that this won’t be easy, that financial stability will be difficult to procure but you’re willing to persist because this is your passion, right? The only problem lies herein; the discomfort and cynicism of the people around you as they remind you that the term “starving artist” didn’t come from nowhere. The combination of somewhat thin encouragement and furtive comments of “what about your academic subjects?” and “are you sure?” are difficult to navigate. Partly because they have a point. The path of an artistic career is tricky in the sense that a set series of degrees and medical school cannot guarantee you a job, and also because the market is so specialist

The best advice I can give to fellow dreamers of an artistic life is to acknowledge the reasonable concerns of the people around you, but never, ever let them discourage you. After all, you’ll need that determination to get you where you want to be. ◙

Although she has been drawing on computers for years, Maria prefers to stick with paper and real tools, her all time favourites being soft, waxy pencils and gouache. “Illustration as a career path has always been kind of an obvious choice for me. Even though at school I quite enjoyed different subjects nothing excited me as much as drawing - I just couldn't stop and I haven’t stopped. Especially since I realised that to earn your living from it you have to work really hard and be very best. It can be very exhausting sometimes and highly competitive but nothing feels more rewarding than having fun working on an exciting and wellpaid commission.”

Karolina would love to have her own studio, but for now she creates her magic in any place that's comfortable, most likely her tiny room which is currently full to the brim with her stuff. Using mostly markers and ink, with the occasional experiment thrown in, Karolina's illustrations are simply drawn yet somehow complex, with dark and otherworldly undertones. HOW TO AVOID POSTHOLIDAY REGRET Written by Amy Lafrankie

TRAVEL

Peachy Magazine When returning home after travelling to an unfamiliar country or place we tend to suppress guilt about not making the absolute most out of our time there and our mouths start running with ‘what ifs’. If you and your family or friends are planning on travelling any time soon, here are a few tips on how to have a great time and not come home feeling unsatisfied.

Learn a few basic words: This is not something you have to do, but learning even a single word in their language can be fun and helpful. It’s something to try and will make your stay in the country less stressful (especially if English isn’t a main language used). It’s always a good idea to take a short phrase book with you in case of emergencies. Get out of your hotel: The most important rule to follow while in a new place is to not stay inside your temporary residence. The more time you spend isolating yourself from adventure the more you miss out on discovery. Turn your wifi off and get your butt outside and explore! Trust me, the more you spend outside, more you’ll be waking up craving for more exploration and fun.

Try local foods: Food is the universal language that brings everyone together; eating dishes from a culture outside of yours is not only an adventure for the tongue but a great way to discover new flavours and new dishes to add to your favourite foods list. If you’re more on the daring side, go out onto the busy streets and try local street food that is not only cheap but something that is close to the locals hearts. There’s nothing worse than returning home from New York and realising you never got to try the fresh bagels from the street vendor round the corner.

Photos by Emma Lucey

Take countless photos: Whether it’s an unreadable store name, a really big tree, or a bottled drink with a foreign language on the label, taking photos is a must and the more you take the more memories you get to keep. Don’t only go for the usual selfies and portrait photos; take shots of landscapes and group photos too. Also remember to get yourself in the group shots - ask a friendly waitress to take a group shot or use a selfie stick (looking like a nerdy tourist is worth it). Heading to a restaurant? Take a photo. See a cute dog? Take a photo. Walking around and come across street performers? Take a photo. Always remember one of the most crucial rules of a traveller: Always. Bring. A. Camera. Save everything (from tickets to receipts): If you haven’t gotten time to buy souvenirs for your family or yourself, substitutes for the usual souvenirs are little knick knacks you collect along the way of your travel. From key chains to tickets to even the receipt from a café can be valuable and a better form of remembrance than a simple tourist shirt. When you get home you can stick all of your bits and pieces into a book along with your photos, or pile them together and wrap some string around to keep them all safe.

Research!: Look up everything you want to do beforehand to make sure you don’t come home only to realise that you missed the best landmark there. I’ve had my fair share of travelling and wishing I could go back and do things I was too scared to do at the time. Now that I’ve learned my lesson, I have countless wonderful memories and mementoes from my trips that I can share with family and friends. Regret less and be more fearless. ◙

ART INSTALLATION: Peachy Magazine

ART

ANN VERONICA JANSSENS’ YELLOWBLUEPINK

Words by Ellie Jerome, photos courtesy of the Wellcome Collection and Kelsey Jonasova

Peachy Magazine There isn’t a single, physical object or piece of art in the room dedicated to Ann Veronica Janssens’ exhibition, yellowbluepink, in London’s Wellcome Collection. Instead, the room is thick with coloured mist that visitors wander through reflectively and slightly unsteadily. The installation is the beginning of Janssens’ State Of Mind project, a year-long investigation into the human conscious, perception and subjectivity. The multicoloured effect of the invading fog is achieved by yellow, blue and pink lights in the ceiling but if you choose not to look up, you can easily convince yourself that you are in the centre of a fabulous sunset. Ann Veronica Janssen is a Brussels-based artist who uses multi-sensory installations to play with the idea of perception. “Nothing is more beautiful than a person’s own perception. I try to push it to its limits,” says the artist. The installation is deliberately disorientating, visitors are unable to see more than a few inches ahead. With colour and light, Janssen creates the feeling of a new reality with a

ART dense curtain of colour which evokes new emotions in visitors. Curator Emily Sargent explains, “to step inside the space is to leave the regular world behind, and to encounter a space in which all experience of surface, depth, even time is obscured by a curtain of colour made physical. While neuroscience is great about telling us about the relationship between brain activity and some cognitive function, it hasn’t yet come up with an explanation of how the activity of neurons can give rise to the experience of colour, as we enter into this installation. And yet without really knowing how or why, we are all experts in that personal experience. And Ann Veronica’s beautiful installation reminds of the richness of our interaction with the world.” This installation achieves what all art aims at, a true sensory experience. ◙ Janssens’ yellowbluepink exhibition is open to visitors of the Wellcome Gallery, London, until the 3rd of January.

(LAST MINUTE) CHRISTMAS

GIFT GUIDE

BOOKS

MAKE-UP

I’m always so overwhelmed with the number of books out there that I’m often spoilt for choice. That’s why receiving books is such a perfect and practical gift! Particularly if it comes with a personal recommendation. There’s also a huge range of coffee table books for the more artsy of your friends.

I love buying my friends make-up because it can be so expensive to build up a good make-up bag these days, that getting make-up for Christmas is a real festive treat! Especially with all the amazing sets that come out at this time of year, make-up is a great go-to gift. They’re usually in cute packaging and they work out at great value for money with all the seasonal offers this time of year. Keep an eye on all your favourite brands for their special festive options! Recommendations:

Recommendations:

Budget: Stila Lip Glaze, £13

Budget: When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman £8.99

Luxury: MAC Enchanted eve lip and eye bag – copper, £45

JEWELLERY I am obsessed with jewellery and always end up slipping a piece into my best friends’ stocking. High street stores have their merits but I adore finding vintage or unusual pieces online. My favourite find has to be a pair of Harley Davidson vintage studs! Look on Depop and Etsy for one of a kind pieces, or online boutiques such as Lyla Loves or Shop Dixi.

Luxury: Miles of MAC £20.40

FOR THE GIRLS

Recommendations: Budget: Lyla Loves Matte Gold White Opal Choker £3 Luxury: Shop Dixi Medea Fire Opal Ring £32

HANDMADE So, this is so cliché but handmade gifts can often be the most thoughtful. My favourite gift last year was a photo album from my best friend filled with photos and handwritten memories. It means so much to me and I read it when I need cheering up. Try your local craft store for supplies and check YouTube and Pinterest for fun ideas.

FOOD Christmas is the season of chocolate and no stocking is complete without a sweet treat. Personalised chocolate bars are great for padding out a present and let’s face it, you can’t go far wrong with sugar. Recommendations: Budget: Any single bar of her favourite chocolate, under £1 (for adding to another present) Luxury: Thorntons Personalised Box of Chocolates, £20

MUSIC I know that not everyone has a vinyl player but as they’re getting more and more common in people’s houses and bedrooms, vinyl records are great gifts. You can spend anything from £4 for a vintage classic up to £20 or more for chart topping artists. If a vinyl record won’t work, try tickets for a local unknown band! You might discover a new favourite with your bestie. Recommendations: Budget: Michael Jackson Vinyl £10 Luxury: Drake Take Care Vinyl £18 Super luxury: Crosley Record Player, £65

THE BORING STUFF! The men in my life are the worst for buying practical things they need. That’s why every Christmas and birthday it seems like all I buy for my brother, boyfriend and dad are boxers, pyjamas, slippers and socks! While it may seem like a dud gift, they’ll be super grateful that they get to live in comfort again without having to take the boring trip to Marks and Spencers to get that soft dressing gown.

FOR THE GUYS

Recommendations: Budget: Topman Multi Pack Underwear, £15 Luxury: M&S Premium Fleece Gown, £29.50

THINK PERSONAL Now this is a tip that I always come back to when buying gifts. What makes that person tick? List everything you know that they love and excites them. For example, my boyfriend studies film so I always throw in a novelty camera gift or for a bigger gift, I would get him a beautiful book about his favourite director. My brother adores sport. His girlfriend buys him the boring things he needs like sock tape as well as getting something special to do with sport, like a signed picture of his favourite sportsman or tickets to a game. The thought put into a gift is what makes it really special! A personalised gift shows that you really thought about what they would love.

GADGETS

In my experience, boys and men love to play with anything electronic. There is such a wide range of goods available on the market this year. Think smart phone gadgets, anything remote controlled, novelty electronics and more. Remember: boys love toys! Recommendations Budget: Clip on fish eye lens for smart phone, £5 Luxury: Star Wars The Force Awakens Remote Control BB-8, £70

GAMES This is such an obvious choice but if you’re really stuck on a gift idea, a console game is a guaranteed appreciated gift. Although it sometimes feels like my boyfriend is in a relationship with his Xbox rather than me, it means that buying him a game is an easy last minute gift. However, be warned, while you think you might be going to his house for Netflix and chill, it can very quickly descend into watch him play for hours on end and chill. Recommendations:

BEAUTY PRODUCTS My boyfriend is completely low maintenance and would never buy himself any kind of skincare or beauty product. That’s why I’m definitely going to get him a set this year – boys have to moisturise too! If they’re not really the type for a skincare set, look out for body spray or hair styling sets, not only are they practical, they come often come in great, festive packaging. Recommendations: Budget: L'Oréal Men Expert Active Sport Gift Set, £10 Luxury: ManCave Grooming Originals Gift Set, £30

Budget: The Last of Us (PS3) £10 Luxury: Fallout 4 £40

HOW TO BE A RODARTE BABE Written by Kseniya Lukiy The Rodarte Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear collection, created by founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy, premiered this September during New York Fashion Week. The California native sisters said the collection was heavily inspired by poetry, filled with intricate detail and whimsical vibes. The collection is royally overthrown with jewel tones, lace, metallic and floral embellishments, fur, sheer features and Greek inspired bohemian dresses, complete with a Victorian-esque elegance. Each look is dreamy and gothically ethereal, with an indulgent sense of completion. From the neck adornments to

the romantic frocks, here’s a guide to adding a dash of Rodarte magic to your own wardrobe… Lace Tights On the stems of nearly every dresswearing model on the runway were a pair of floral lace tights. This look is easily recreated with looks from the bigh street check out ASOS and Shoptiques for some affordable alternatives. Worn either angelically or grungy (it’s all in the personality you bring), these floral lace tights have the potential to perfectly polish off your look.

Peachy Magazine Intricate Dresses This collection was nothing short of exquisite in the dress department. Frills, lace, metallic touches and bell sleeves brought a truly bohemian feel to the collection. Similar dresses can be found on the high street from brands like Band of Gypsies and Free People. Neck Adornments and Chunky Jewellery Accessories like skinny scarves, chandelier earrings, ribbon chokers, and floral hair pieces were seen within the collection in practically every look. Free People has a gorgeous assortment of skinny scarves go for classic black or eggshell white for a staple that can be worn with anything. Forever 21 does great chandelier earrings and Urban Outfitters stocks gold leaf headbands that look akin to those on the runway. As for a ribbon choker, don’t be shy to cut a strand of craft ribbon to tie around your neck!

Faux Fur Coats A handful of looks from the collection were topped off with lush and luxurious fur coats. Nothing says glamour more than fur. Chicwish sells a beautiful dark ombre faux fur coat and a creamy blush fur from Forever 21 is another divine option that brings plenty of Rodarte magic to your closet. Metallic Shoes The models walked the runway in heels that didn’t look unlike Quality Streets metallic greens, silvers, yellows and oranges clopped up and down the catwalk, adding even more party glamour to the collection. WHERE BIANCA LUINI SEES FASHION Written by Ellie Jerome

Type to enter text

It has always been argued that high fashion is a form of art, but it’s never been so strikingly obvious as it is when scrolling through Where I See Fashion, the fabulous fashion/art blog run by fashion design graduate Bianca Luini. On the blog, Bianca matches up high fashion photos with artwork, photography or stunning natural landscapes to make striking comparisons between the two.

noticing similarities and relations between images. Started in the summer of 2013, the blog is now insanely popular. WISF has appeared in over a hundred online features, including the Hunter website, WeTheUrban Magazine, the i-D Italy website and Atlas Magazine. The blog has also been praised by supermodel Coco Rocha. However, Milan-born Bianca Luini still says that the highlight of running WISF is not the worldwide acclaim but the knowledge that her work has inspired people across the globe.

The blog began as image research for a university project, when Bianca first began

images, Bianca explains that it’s “a process that can take a second or weeks, sometimes I’m lucky enough to find two photos at the same time that perfectly go together but usually I find the perfect pair after a few days. Or maybe I don’t find anything for a week and then I create 15 matches in a day. It’s not a regular or determined process, it kind of just happens when it’s time!”

“MAYBE I DON’T FIND ANYTHING FOR A WEEK AND THEN I CREATE 15 MATCHES IN ONE DAY. IT KIND OF JUST HAPPENS WHEN IT’S TIME”

The result of Bianca’s efforts is a blog that will have you scrolling for hours, your eyes glued to the pure aesthetic goodness of high fashion juxtaposed with masterpieces of art and nature. To see all of the matches and to delve deeper into the world of Bianca Luini, go straight over to Where I See Fashion now. You’ll never see the fashion world in the same way again. ◙

From scrolling through WISF, it’s plain to see that Bianca’s eye for detail is incomparable. Her ability to pair up pictures that are so visually pleasing and aesthetically perfect is surely a rare one. Talking about the process of pairing up
