A WAY OF
Life at
For more than 65 years, Cardigan Mountain School has been a place where boys feel When you think “school” you might be thinking: math problems, challenged, supported, appreciated, and vocabulary quizzes, homework, and so on. We’re thinking motivated to be their best. That’s because bigger-picture than that. We’re thinking: A lot of the most Cardigan offers a holistic* educational important learning experiences aren’t even in the classroom. approach that involves nurturing not only We’re thinking: Let’s create an environment where boys learn boys’ intellectual development but also their and grow in every way, every day. physical, emotional, social, and ethical growth. The whole boy, living a balanced life. That’s the Cardigan Way.
2
HUH? Don’t you think “holistic” should be “whole-istic,” since it means all-inclusive, complete, or whole, emphasizing the interdependence of all the parts?
3
All of the Elements
Boys at Cardigan benefit from a strong academic program that features relevant, engaging, and hands-on learning (see page 15). They also get physically active through interscholastic sports, recreational activities, and good clean fun (page 20). Every student has a chance to create and to express himself through arts classes and a variety of performance opportunities (page 23). Each boy considers his own spirituality, the religious traditions of others, and the big questions of ethics and morality in our global world (page 6, and elsewhere). In other words, our way of living and learning is active, interesting, and rewarding. It provides opportunities for boys to shine in areas of strength, to become more well-rounded by trying new things and learning from other people, and to enjoy a range of fulfilling experiences.

CALL OUT
As a new student at Cardigan, you can have the “big brother” you’ve always wished for: an older student who is a good mentor and friend.
can you relate? Cardigan is a small community where people treat you like the unique individual you are. Every day, positive interactions with people at Cardigan will be a big part of your experience. Who are these people?
YOUR PEERS.
Yes, your fellow students. Cardigan welcomes boys from various parts of the U.S. and about a dozen other countries, boys from backgrounds like yours and not like yours. Being in classes, on teams, and in dorms with these kids is going to teach you a lot about our diverse and interesting world—and about yourself, too. Cardigan fosters a sense of fellowship among boys with different talents, strengths, life experiences, learning styles, and interests. Middle school is an adventure meant to be shared!
OUR FACULTY.
Caring, kind, and patient, the adults in the community are really looking out for you. Your teachers, coaches, dorm parents, and advisor will take a personal interest in you—what you’re good at, what you need to work on, and what your goals and interests are. Their guidance, feedback, and positive reinforcement will help you make progress every single day.
y When you do something nice—like helping a friend on crutches to carry his soup to the lunch table—you don’t expect a medal. But at Cardigan, your small good deeds might just get you an award! It’s true. A few times a term we give out “Heart of the Cougar” awards to people who have been especially kind or helpful toward someone else in the community. Cardigan is a place where a kind deed gets noticed, where doing the right thing is appreciated, and where positive reinforcement is a regular part of your interactions with adults. 5

introducing CHRIS F Cardigan’s Core Values are: Compassion, Honesty, Respect, Integrity, Scholarship, and Fairness. (for short, they are known as CHRIS F). Those values aren’t just words on a banner here. Students explore the meaning of each Core Value through discussion, class assignments, and communitybuilding activities. They see the Core Values modeled by adults in the community. And they put the Core Values into action in every campus context—from the classroom, to the gym, to the dorm, to the dining hall, and everywhere in between. This is real character education, in living color, and it is integral to the Cardigan Way. Our Core Values are the pillars of our school culture, are present in every aspect of school life, and give students an ethical foundation to take with them when they leave Cardigan.
y
THINK ABOUT IT!
What does it mean to be a moral and ethical human being? How are we all connected? Each week Cardigan’s nonsectarian Chapel Program offers boys a time to consider life’s big questions and to nurture their spiritual side. Members of the community provide music, share personal experiences, and offer food for thought. Our reflections in Chapel are often tied to our Core Values and the meaning of community, in both the local and global sense.
6
COMPASSION
We cherish the quality of kindness, asking each member of our community to “love thy neighbor as thyself,” and we embrace the importance of service for the greater good.

INTEGRITY
We cultivate personal integrity, underscoring our commitment to “doing the right thing,” through community discussion, public example, and role modeling.

We instill a love of learning and promote intellectual curiosity and growth, recognizing that each person learns differently.
FAIRNESS
We believe that all people deserve the opportunity to grow and develop, succeed and fail, in a safe environment that values intent, effort, and accomplishment, free from bias and prejudice. 7

This Is Fun! Cardigan is designed to nurture the whole boy—so we offer an education that doesn’t leave out the kind of recreation that’s fun and builds community. Our brand-new student center is home to an eclectic, boy-centric Student Activities Program, which sponsors both weekday and weekend activities, such as films in the “Cardigan Café,” interdorm competitions, and trips to movies, malls, college sporting events, ski resorts, and paintball courses. Many of our students find a little time on the weekends to do community service, including stocking local shelters and food pantries, stacking firewood for neighbors, and teaching kids to skate.
CARDIGAN’S UNIQUE TRADITIONS A FRESH START:
To mark the “new day dawning” on their lives, all new students and teachers climb Mt. Cardigan to (literally) see the sun rise at the start of the school year.
TRACTOR PULLS, LOG ROLLING, GIANT PUMPKINS (OH MY!):
In early October, the entire school attends the Sandwich Fair, in celebration of Founders’ Day at Cardigan. 10
AH, NATURE:
When the fall foliage is at its peak, our school enjoys Mountain Day by climbing a nearby peak and having a picnic at the summit.
THE SCHOOL THAT SKIS TOGETHER:
In the late winter, students and faculty take a Ski Holiday at one of the local ski slopes.
COMFORT FOR A CAUSE:
We hold “dress-down” days throughout the year to raise money for local charities.
BRING ON THE HOT COCOA:
Mother Nature offers great wintertime fun opportunities here on campus, including snow tricks, ski and snowboard races on Clancy Mountain (our own snow-sports hill complete with rope tow), old-school outdoor hockey on the lake (or on the backyard rink behind the headmaster's house), and more!
YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS TO HAVE FUN:
One day in the spring is designated Headmaster’s Day, when classes are suspended in favor of fun and games.
A (SORT OF) HISTORIC RIVALRY:
Twice a year, all Cardigan sports teams get revved up to compete against Eaglebrook. We alternate between hosting our rivals on our campus and taking a road trip to compete there.
CHILL OUT:
In spring, when the ice is out, brave souls take an early-morning Polar Bear Club swim at the lake every day except Sunday. Brrrrrr!
AH, NOSTALGIA:
At the conclusion of the year, the senior class climbs Mt. Cardigan to see the sunset together and to reflect on their Cardigan experience. 11
A WAY OF
Teaching & The Cardigan Way is to help every boy to achieve his academic potential. With more than six decades of experience in the art There’s more than one way to teach concepts in geometry, of educating middle school boys, we know a lot about creating an more than one way to show you understand the themes in a atmosphere where boys feel motivated to do their best. We also novel or short story. Cardigan teachers are looking to make sure draw on some serious science—the latest research on adolescent that kids “get” what is being taught. They’ve got lots of tricks brain development, learning styles, and the pedagogies* that have up their sleeves! been shown to be most effective for boys like you. One more thing: We have caring teachers who make it a priority to understand each student as a unique learner and as an individual person.
12
HUH? Pedagogy is educator-speak for the art or method of teaching. Don’t worry: You’ll benefit from it, but you won’t have to spell it!
13
4 REASONS TO LOVE OUR ONETO-ONE LAPTOP PROGRAM 1 Every boy has a school-issued computer for him and him alone. 2. Teachers and students have the exact same software and hardware, so everyone is doing his assignments and communicating from the same platform, and窶品n a manner of speaking窶品n the same language. 3. Technology is fun (and fun is good)! Laptop programs have a reputation for not only improving student motivation, but also positively affecting student writing. 4. Heavy textbooks are so twentieth century! Although some classes need to use regular books, e-books are more the rule than the exception at Cardigan.
y Numerous studies in the U.S. and internationally have shown that boys achieve more academically in a single-sex learning environment. With classroom instruction tailored to suit them, research shows that boys are also more positive about learning, better organized, and more well rounded. 14
Don’t Just Sit There— Learn!
Classes at Cardigan are small—about 12 students
on average—meaning that everyone receives attention from the teacher. Knowing that boys bring a lot of kinetic* energy and enthusiasm to the classroom, teachers at Cardigan keep students engaged with active, hands-on learning activities. For example, you might learn about World War I by recreating aspects of “trench warfare” in the snow (while battling with snowballs!), get thigh-deep in a swamp to literally explore a marsh ecosystem, or create a projectile-throwing catapult to learn about basic principles in physical science.
HUH? Kinetic means relating to or produced by motion. (Know anybody who has trouble sitting still?) Kinetic energy as a scientific term is something you’ll learn about when you study physical science. 15
NOT JUST KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
A solid academic foundation—one that prepares you for your next school—is what you can expect to get at Cardigan. But that’s not all. We’ll work to help you develop academic and life skills that will be important for your success in high school, in college, and beyond. These include reading closely, writing clearly, and thinking critically, as well as developing crucial executive functioning* skills. We don’t expect boys to arrive knowing how to use a planner, how to take great notes, or how to budget their time. We teach everybody how to do it. We also emphasize such skills as public speaking. Boys develop and hone their speaking and presentation skills in classes, but there are dozens of other opportunities to gain confidence through experience—from making an announcement at a school meeting to sharing something from their faith tradition at a weekly Chapel gathering, to making a speech to the School as a candidate for a senior leadership position.
y At Cardigan your education really is your own. We encourage parent–teacher–student conferences, where students work with the teacher to present their progress to their parents. Also, many teachers here use portfolio-based assessment. Students must think reflectively and critically to help decide what goes into the portfolio to best represent what they’ve learned and accomplished. Your work, your input. Makes sense! 16
HUH? We’re talking about organization, study skills, time management, and the kind of thinking that enables people to plan and execute tasks successfully.
Our Secret Weapon (and Yours)
You are unique. Understanding
how your mind works and how you learn best will make you a more self-sufficient, confident, and successful learner. That’s why Cardigan invented PEAKS®, a one-of-a-kind program designed to help boys do just that. PEAKS stands for Personalized Education for the Acquisition of Knowledge and Skills, and you won’t find it at any other school. PEAKS is integrated into the academic curriculum for everybody in every grade at Cardigan. In innovative PEAKS classes and in other settings, students work with PEAKS coaches individually to develop fundamental skills and also the element that is so crucial to academic success: self-knowledge.
PEAKS® is a registered trademark of Cardigan Mountain School.
17
GLOBAL CITIZENS Cardigan Mountain School offers a close-knit community that prepares middle school boys—in mind, body, and spirit—for responsible and meaningful lives in a global society. That’s our official mission. In keeping with that mission, we’ve developed what we call a Global Community Initiative (GCI) that ensures that we are purposefully building awareness about our multicultural world and developing the skills to be successful in it. Boys in every grade participate in weekly Global Leadership classes. GCI also creates opportunities for guest speakers and arts performances that enhance our community’s appreciation for diverse cultural perspectives and experiences. Thinking globally, Cardigan students also act locally by participating in service learning projects such as volunteering at a home for the elderly or collecting supplies for a food bank.
18
LOTS OF FEEDBACK How are you doing in your classes? At Cardigan you’ll get lots of regular feedback from your classroom teachers to help you stay motivated and on track. Every student also has a designated advisor, who touches base multiple times during the week and who has an eye on your day-to-day progress, as well as your long-term goals. (Advisors also communicate with parents during the term to keep them in the loop.) At the end of the term, the high honor roll, honor roll, and effort honor roll, recognize hard work and intent, as well as achievement. Each student is required to take six core courses at Cardigan: English, history, math, science, a world language (French, Latin, or Spanish), and Personalized Education for the Acquisition of Knowledge and Skills (PEAKS). In some circumstances a student will take English as a Second Language (ESL) instead of a world language course. At Cardigan we want you to be challenged by class work, not stumped, and definitely not wishing for a faster pace. Our intimate class size will enable you to be accelerated in your areas of strength, and supported in classes where you are less capable. We want your classes to suit your needs so that your progress, in all subject areas, is strong and steady.
Your Teachers, Your Team
A random group of individuals
is way, way different from a team working together toward a common goal. Lucky for you, Cardigan’s teachers are grouped into teams according to the grade they teach. By collaborating with each other, all of the teachers on a team can strengthen connections among different subject areas, enhance skill building across the board, and monitor the progress of individual students like you. At Cardigan, you can be sure that your team has your back!

Cardigan’s mission is to nurture the whole boy—mind, body, This is not a secret: Sports are good for you, but they are also fun! and spirit. You don’t have to be a star to be the Student-Athlete of the Week. You might just bring that extra intangible something (maybe a positive attitude and constant encouragement for teammates, or a scrappy, never-give-up work ethic) to your games and practices. Nominated by their teammates and selected by team captains, two student-athletes are recognized each week, one from the varsity level and one from the sub-varsity level.
THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM “I’ve never played lacrosse before, but I’d like to try— is there a team for me?” “I’ve been playing hockey competitively and successfully since I was five years old—is there a team for me?” “I’m not sure highly competitive sports are for me, but I want to be healthy and fit—is there a team for me?”
YES, YES, AND YES!
At Cardigan, all boys fulfill an athletic requirement, and we offer many different levels of competition to make sure there is a team for everyone. For example, soccer has varsity, JV, thirds, and reserve. Skiing opportunities include the USSA Eastern Ski Team, Varsity Alpine, and recreational skiing and snowboarding. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned athlete, at Cardigan you will have the opportunity to be part of a rewarding team endeavor, to improve individually, and to enjoy athletic activity as part of a well-balanced life. You’ll have coaches who are knowledgeable, experienced, and encouraging. Most have played or coached at high levels, including Division I. They create an environment that builds character, confidence, camaraderie, and skills.
OTHER FUN ACTIVITIES
In addition to the formal athletic program, there are many other kinds of opportunities to be active. Some of the organized events include Fitness Day, intramural sports, and the Dorm Olympics, featuring such sports as “tennyball” (picture baseball with tennis racquets instead of bats). In their free time, Cardigan students can also be found skateboarding, tossing Frisbees, swimming in the lake, skating, sledding on Clancy Mountain, and more. Indoors and out, in every season, Cardigan students are often on the move!
HOW TO SPOT A COUGAR (HEY, YOUR PRIDE IS SHOWING!) 1. Wears green and white. 2. Practices with dedication and a solid work ethic. 3. Plays with heart and hustle. 4. Arts in the Curriculum
VISUAL ARTS: What if you could take an idea in your head and turn it into something everyone can see? You can in visual arts classes at Cardigan. Boys give expression to their ideas through drawing, painting, making prints, and working with clay and other materials and media. In addition to presenting what you’re thinking, these hands-on activities enhance your visual–perceptual skills and hand–eye coordination and develop visual and creative problem-solving skills. Plus, learning about art history and the styles of various artists enables you to see more deeply into works of art and get inside the minds of the artists who created them. Sixth graders take one term of art. Seventh, eighth, and ninth graders have the option of taking art or woodworking.
26
y Arts and culture go together. Because Cardigan students come from a variety of cultures and countries, you might get to learn more about a classmate by watching him create a self-portrait in art class, or playing alongside him in the Music Ensemble.
WOODWORKING: The Williams Wood Shop is one of the coolest places on campus, and it contains a variety of hand and power tools (radial arm saw, table saw, band saw, drill press—you get the idea). Students who take woodworking, which is an option from seventh grade on, are instructed in the operation and care of all equipment, as well as such processes as sanding, staining, and finishing. As students learn and gain experience, they tackle more difficult projects, even creating their own designs and making unique tables, inlaid boxes, and other functional and beautiful objects. 27
REV UP YOUR CREATIVE, ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT!
Creative inspiration brought us the wheel, the light bulb, the sticky note. The next amazing invention might just come from a Cardigan student! That’s because boys here have opportunity to be analytical, practical, and creative all at once through the Charles C. Gates Invention & Innovation Competition. In the program, students participate in a creative process to design and build an invention that must perform a practical function, make life easier or safer, entertain, or solve an everyday problem. One student's recent invention—a product that improves skateboard technology— was deemed so promising that the student received support from the Gates Frontiers Fund to pursue an actual patent!
MUSIC: There is more to music than meets the ear, and music classes at Cardigan examine the fundamentals of music and explore musical history, including the history of jazz, rock & roll, the American musical, and composers that span the Baroque, classical, romantic, and twentiethcentury periods. Discovering connections among the genres, students also gain insight into how musical styles and traditions reflect the societies that produce them. All Cardigan students take music for one term each year.
28
DRAMA: The Drama Program is an extracurricular option that, in any given year, nearly half the boys at the School choose to take part in. The fact is: It’s a great team experience. If acting is not for you, you can get involved behind the scenes working the lights and sound, or building and decorating sets. Some students even help produce and direct. During the nights of performance, the student stage managers and technical staff run the entire show. Theatrical opportunities each year include a series of one-act plays, the annual Christmas Pageant, a full-length play/musical, and dramatic/comedic scenes performed as part of our Talent Show.
SHOW WHAT YOU CAN DO
Productions of the Drama Program are not the only opportunities for students to perform and share their creative talents. Students sing for the Glee Club and perform with informal ensembles for community service or at Chapel or school meetings. They can take private music lessons and participate in recitals, or even join Grades and Comments, the facultystudent band. They show their artwork in the Needham Gallery in Bronfman Hall and share their writing and photography in the Blaze, the school yearbook. 29

A CULMINATING EXPERIENCE: NINTH GRADE AT CARDIGAN
Staying for the ninth-grade year at Cardigan is one of the best things you can do to become a better candidate for admission to your next school. Why? Because Cardigan's ninth graders are campus leaders. Whether elected to official ‘senior leader’ positions or not, many assume leadership roles during their senior year. Their Global Leadership classes include team-building and problem-solving exercises, and workshops and guest speakers enrich the leadership education received by all, whether a student is a floor leader, a ‘big brother,’ a ‘peer tutor,’ a team captain, or simply a fine role model who is kind to all. Cardigan ninth graders enter secondary school from a position of strength, with confidence in their academic preparation as well as their leadership and decision-making skills.
