ALUMNAE GIVING More now than ever, our alumnae are echoing the opinion that attending Holton is truly life-changing. Holton women gain confidence through successes in the classroom, on stage, in athletic competition, and in campus leadership positions, the mindopening experience of traveling to remote lands in Holton’s Global Education Program, and achievement in one’s career path. These experiences keep alumnae coming back and giving back, and acting as passionate ambassadors for Holton. Each annual gift from an alumna reflects

both a tangible validation of her days at Holton and a desire to guarantee the same transformative experiences for today’s students. The Champagne Cup Congratulations to the Class of 1962 for reaching the highest participation in the Annual Fund. 51% of the class made a gift in 2011-12. The Presidents’ Cup Of the Holton-Arms reunion classes, the Class of 1962 contributed the largest sum with gifts totaling $16,245. 5

PARENT GIVING Support among parents for the Holton Annual Fund is a fundamental benchmark of a committed and engaged parent body. Most importantly, your gifts provide our girls with a learning environment that features a superior faculty, an ever-expanding spectrum of curricular

offerings, and opportunities to excel in athletics, arts and through local engagement. We are extremely proud that Holton parents participate in the Annual Fund at a rate substantially higher than the NAIS average.

ENDOWMENT GIVING Each year, Holton is the beneficiary of gifts dedicated to new and/or existing endowment funds. Whether made in an outright fashion using cash or securities, or as part of one’s estate plan, gifts to Holton’s endowment provide perpetual support for academic programs, the

arts, faculty compensation and professional development, financial aid and scholarships, and for general purposes. We gratefully acknowledge those donors whose gifts will sustain the School and its mission and secure our position at the educational forefront.

LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Holton-Arms Alumnae, Parents, and Friends:

As part of the Plan’s goal to capitalize more effectively on the DC area’s rich resources, we also promoted experiential and interdisciplinary learning through local engagement while we continued our commitment to global engagement. One notable new program, called Sweet Readers, was featured on NPR’s Morning Edition. The program connects Middle School Holton and Landon students with Alzheimer’s patients using art at the Krieger Museum as inspiration for conversation. Students also enjoyed unique presentations by people who brought faraway worlds to the Holton campus.

First, thank you to every person who contributed to Holton-Arms this past year. Like any independent school or college, we depend on the generosity of our friends to continue to offer the outstanding education that defines the Holton experience. This means that every donor should feel that s/he plays a part in ensuring the distinction of our faculty, the beauty of our campus and the top-notch quality of our facilities, and the rich array of academic, arts, athletic and extracurricular programs. I hope you know how much we value your investment in this wonderful school.

We recognize that supporting our faculty is key to our success, so we also created a new Dean of Faculty position which Christopher Wilson has ably filled. Among his many responsibilities, he led a task force of faculty and administrators who created a new evaluation system premised on faculty growth. We have also increased our funds for professional development and look forward to increasing faculty compensation, both areas where our donors will be able to help!

In addition to financial support, thoughtful strategic planning represents another critical way the School maintains the strength of our programming. As you may know, we began implementing the 2010 Strategic Plan this year which sparked a number of important and exciting initiatives. The Plan focuses on the student experience by emphasizing student-centered learning. In particular, this year we concentrated on experiential learning (learning by doing), interdisciplinary learning, and blended learning (a combination of online and in-person learning).

One of the best parts of the Strategic Plan for me, personally, has been the opportunity to share our ideas with alumnae and past parents around the country. Last fall, we launched an Inspiration Tour that took some combination of Alumnae Director Abigail Betts ’98, Director of Leadership Giving Melissa Prather and me to thirteen different cities. The response was terrific and we so enjoyed connecting with folks, and talking about Holton today and as we envision its future!

To fulfill these goals, we commissioned the faculty to determine the best means for implementing the plan. They did this through faculty led committees called professional learning communities (PLC’s). A number of intriguing plans have grown out of this process including:

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES As we celebrate philanthropy at Holton-Arms in this annual report, there is an excitement in the air as many of us believe we are on the cusp of something rather extraordinary in planning for the future. This annual report chronicles the remarkable strides taken in the past school year and demonstrates the commitment of our entire Holton community to inspire girls to lead lives of positive influence.

Creating a task force on faculty evaluation and compensation: Under the guidance of Independent School Management consultant Terry Moore, the task force developed working documents regarding basic expectations of teachers and the methodology for assessing teacher excellence. • Expanding our efforts to provide opportunities for unique and meaningful local engagement: Led by the Board’s Outreach Task Force, The School is actively developing an extensive inventory of resources and people (from all segments of the Holton family) which may prove to be an asset in enhancing experiential learning for girls at Holton. • Supporting the launch of the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs): More than 60 faculty members participated in focused curriculum development by meeting in small groups anchored by a curricular theme. Our girls will be the direct beneficiaries as we transition from the development phase and implement these changes in the near future. • Raising money for elements of the Strategic Plan, both for current use and endowment: Major strides were made in both our Global Education program and in support of endowment for financial aid. For Global Ed, more than $100,000 was donated—chiefly by current parents—to provide increased operating capital for this flourishing program. This amount was matched by a $100,000 grant by an anonymous benefactor. Additionally, several new scholarship funds have been formally established, and more are being developed. These scholarships will provide financial assistance to intellectually curious young women throughout the Greater Washington area. •

At Holton, we have a rich history of embracing intellectual curiosity, cultivating creativity, and valuing individuality of all who enter our open door. These are just a few of the key distinctions that make the Holton Experience truly unique. Many have contributed to this progress, but none more so than Susanna A. Jones, her administrative team, and the entire faculty and staff. Their commitment to advance the 2010 Strategic Plan is evidenced not only on campus, but also online, in greater Washington, DC and throughout the world. As the Chair of the Board, it is my honor to share with you some of the accomplishments from this previous school year. In terms of facts and figures, I am happy to report that Holton is in an unequivocally strong financial position. Enrollment, the foundation for a healthy budget, continued to hold strong at 645 students. We also saw robust attendance at the Admissions Open House in November, followed by a sustained stream of inquiry and activity in the Admissions Office throughout the year.

This accomplishments could not have happened without the generous support from Holton’s alumnae, parents and friends, who give so graciously of their time and resources. Thank you for your continued support to all that’s finest.

On the Advancement side, our Annual Fund met the budgeted goal of $1,050,000, with a final yield of $1,052,245. Notably, a $20,000 challenge from the Alumnae Board and a $5,000 challenge from the Parents’ association instigated a successful late-year push among both alumnae and parents.

PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT OF HOLTON The recent fiscal year was a strong one for philanthropy at Holton. For the first time in recent years, gift revenue exceeded $2 million â&#x20AC;&#x201C; ending at $2,031,219. We are deeply grateful to the more than 2,000 alumnae, parents and friends of the School whose gifts so generously

supported the Annual Fund, our highly successful Spring Gala, assisted with campus facilities upgrades, invested in new and existing endowment funds, and provided for an increasingly robust Global Education initiative.

REVENUE AND EXPENSES A substantial portion of expenses are dedicated to the heart and soul of Holton-Arms â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the faculty and staff. Competitive salaries and generous opportunities for professional development enable the School to recruit and retain the very best teachers. In alignment with our Strategic Plan, Holton will seek to upgrade facilities while continuing aggressive investment in people and programs.

Under the leadership of the Board of Trusteesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Finance Committee, Holton-Arms completed another successful year with a balanced budget. While 75.4% of revenue was derived from tuition and fees, Holton was also supported by a diversified revenue stream that included Pooled Investment income, increasing philanthropic support, and an array of special programs.

ENROLLMENT Total enrollment in 2011-12 was 645 students of whom 108 were new to Holton, coming to us from 72 different schools. While we continue to draw students primarily from Maryland (72% of total enrollment), both Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia each comprise 14% of our student body. Legacy relationships continue to be strong as we proudly point to 237 students who bear a legacy

connection to Holton, including 45 of whom share their alma mater with their mother. Holton remains firmly committed to providing need-based financial aid to accepted students. In 2011-12, our Financial Aid budget reached $3,457,125 with an average grant of 62% of tuition. Twenty-five percent of Holton’s student body receives some amount of financial assistance.

At Holton, outstanding faculty, small classes, a vigorous academic program, and a broad array of arts and athletic offerings combine to provide our girls with a unique and meaningful educational experience. The encouragement to take risks, explore opportunities for leadership and interact with members of the larger, multicultural community contributes to the “portrait” of a Holton girl.

Tony, Staci and Isabella Capuano ‘19 have been active members of the Holton community since 2009 when Isabella began third grade. From the moment they set foot on campus, Tony and Staci have been instrumental to the fundraising efforts at Holton. Together they have served as Annual Fund and Admissions volunteers, and Staci has chaired the Spring Gala for the past two years. Isabella is enjoying her academic journey and the friends she has made along the way. Lynn Holman Nicholas ’57, Holton’s 2012 Distinguished Alumna, is widely recognized as an award winning author, activist, art historian, and global citizen. Her first book, The Rape of Europa:The Fate of Europe’s Treasures in the Third Reich and the Second World War won the National Book Critics Award for general non-fiction in 1994 and was adapted for a film bearing the same name released in 2006. The book inspired an international movement to locate works of art and property confiscated before and during WWII. For her service and research, Lynn was awarded the Legion d’Honneur by France and an Amicus Poloniae by Poland. She has become widely known as a lecturer at museums and universities in the U.S. and abroad. In 2007-2008, Lynn returned to Holton to discuss her book and to screen her documentary film with Upper School students.

Sandy Fox ‘12 has been an integral part of the 2012 graduating class. Throughout Upper School, Sandy ran for cross country, serving as the team’s co-captain in her senior year, and worked on the Scribbler staff as sports editor and managing editor. As captain of the It’s Academic team, Sandy led her on-air trio to the final round this spring. Sandy was named the Alumnae Scholar during her junior year and earned a position on the Alumnae Board representing the student body. She will attend Dartmouth College in the fall. Sherry Wells, fourth grade teacher As a graduate of a single sex school and the mother of a four year old daughter, Sherry Wells strongly believes in the importance of educating young women. She has been teaching for fifteen years, and has just completed her second year at Holton. Sherry loves teaching her fourth graders as well as sharing her love of dance by choreographing dances for Holton’s Mosaic. Sherry hopes her diverse perspective enriches the lives of her students as much as Holton girls enrich her life.

Adrena Ifill is the founder of DoubleBack Productions, LLC, which manages cultural and historical projects to restore and preserve less widely known events in the history of the African Diaspora. Adrena has also managed the creation of Avoice, the virtual library project of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, and the national merchandising campaign for Take Our Daughter to Work® Day. Adrena regularly hosts a Senior Project and has participated in the 8th grade career day, Make Your Way Day. In addition, she is a member of the Alumnae Board and will serve as president for the 2012-2013 School Year. Mahnaz Ahmed Husain ’87 This will be Mahnaz’s twentieth year at Holton, ten years as a student and ten years as a parent. She has served as a Parents Association representative for Middle and Upper School. Mahnaz has co-chaired committees and school wide events such as Holton Harvest and Mosaic. She loved making soup with her daughter’s 3rd grade class for a local soup kitchen as well trying to inconspicuously help her upper schooler with class events. Next year, Mahnaz is excited to serve as the US Division Rep.
