R

ecently, our honors chorus performed at an Open House. At first glance, one might simply have observed a collection of fully engaged Upper School students, working together beautifully to bring life to choral pieces written more than a century ago. Upon further examination, one would see the very visible connection between the students and a passionate educator, and the palpable outline of a partnership rooted both in warmth and high expectations. Step behind the curtain earlier in the morning, and the unwavering voluntary arts rehearsal call time of 7:30 a.m. serves as a reminder of the perseverance and hard work that begets the sparkling performance. The presence, poise, harmony, and confidence that LFCDS students exhibit is a reflection of the environment at Lake Forest Country Day School, where core values are carefully nurtured in academics, athletics, and the arts from early childhood through middle school. That journey is a reflection of the partnership between inspired educators and each individual student, between families and the School, and through a lifelong connection between LFCDS and our alumni and friends.

“ The presence, poise, harmony, and confidence that LFCDS students exhibit is a reflection of the environment at Lake Forest Country Day School.” 2

Once again, you have powerfully expressed your support for Lake Forest Country Day School’s core values and educational priorities. Together, you have helped us exceed our goals, contributing over $520,000 to our Annual Fund, the cornerstone of our fundraising initiatives. Many among you, alumni and parents alike, were energetic volunteers. Your focus and drive for our Auction, our Parent Association programming, directly affected faculty, students, academic and extracurricular programs, and the infrastructure that supports the life of the School. Thank you to each donor listed in this book for being part of the partnership that supports our School. Each person who gives to the School strengthens our foundation. Each one of you changed our lives. In our 125th year, you enable LFCDS to focus with great confidence on defining the future, and we are most grateful. You have made clear your appreciation for devoted faculty who help young people develop confidence in their abilities and themselves. This report features quotes from our educators about why they teach, and why they teach here. Their words are a thank you note to each person who contributes to our financial health and well-being, and in turn, transforms the life of an individual child. Thank you for sharing your time and your resources with us so we can make these experiences possible. With profound gratitude,

Bob Whelan 1

“I teach because... I have a passionate love for all things related to music. I want to share this love with my students so that they, too, have the opportunity to develop the skills and passion to be successful participants in and responsible consumers of music for the duration of their lives. — Scott Baeseman

Chair of Fine Arts Department, Music educator

S Fine Arts Education in the arts is an integral part of the education of the whole child at LFCDS. Our students learn to interpret and express ideas through observation, analysis, and artistic creation. Studies spanning Shakespeare to Schubert to still life develop imagination and creativity

2

while honing self-discipline and perseverance. As young artists develop their talents on choral risers and in art exhibitions in their years at LFCDS, they gain confidence, learn valuable presentational skills, and discover the power of collaboration.

“I teach because... It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do…well-besides manage a rock band! I love the age group I’ve been working with for their genuine love of learning, curiosity for the way things work, and kindness toward each other. Anyone who gets as many hugs as I do a day HAS TO love what they do!” — Megan Mathy

Senior Kindergarten Teacher

S Social and Emotional Learning Fostering students of strong character lies at the very heart of the LFCDS mission statement. We are committed to educating students in an atmosphere that facilitates the development of personal responsibility and respect for others. Several program elements help to guide children as they develop their social and emotional skills at LFCDS. In the Lower School, the Responsive Classroom approach focuses on a variety of elements that create safe spaces for children to build relationships and discover their own identity. Habits of Mind, ways of thinking and behaving that 4

develop self-discipline and strong character, are promoted by all teachers in the Lower School. In the Upper School, the Developmental Design program, based on the research-grounded belief that healthy, enjoyable relationships are the foundation for success in school, coupled with the Affective Education initiative, teaching children to deal with feelings, values, and social interactions to help develop positive self-images, allow our older students to continue to build on what they have learned in their younger years as they develop new leadership and social skills. 5

“I teach because... I love knowing that every day in my classroom is totally different than the last one and some of the best days are when the lesson takes a totally unexpected turn. I teach because I love seeing when the “light” goes on in a student’s eyes. I teach math because I want everybody to know that while math can be challenging, it can still be fun!” — Ty Stuckslager

Upper School Mathematics Teacher

S Mathematics The Lower School’s new Singapore Math program, like the Singaporean strategies that inspired it, prioritizes the development of strong number sense, excellent mental math skills, and a deep understanding of place value. Emphasis is placed on a visual approach to solving problems that helps students organize information and solve problems step by step, whether through the use of manipulatives, model-drawing, or abstract algorithms. Mastery is at the core of Singapore Math: fewer concepts are taught per year, but each concept is taught in greater depth. 6

Singapore Math at LFCDS goes hand in hand with the Upper School’s math curriculum and the School’s overall philosophy. As students build up to algebraic studies in later grades, the strong foundation in math concepts, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills instilled by Singapore Math in Lower School allows for a smoother transition to higher-level mathematics.

“I teach because... I teach so each child will have a memorable school experience. My goal is to create a classroom without boundaries that will encourage the child to always be learning, sharing and stretching his or her imagination. I want them to think, “I love being here!” — Claire Concannon Second Grade Teacher

S Differentiation Customizing instruction to unique students and their varied interests and needs is a cornerstone of high-quality teaching and learning. Known as differentiation, this key to responsive education pervades all that we do at LFCDS. We pride ourselves on our ability to deeply know our students as learners and to think outside of the box when it comes to approaching their learning in the most appropriate and effective ways. Students who exhibit academic talent, for instance, may participate in a Knights of

16

the Round Table mathematics think tank experience, assume editor responsibilities for the Lower School newspaper, or take advanced Upper School mathematics courses. Those children who require additional support may receive in-class individual help, small-group assistance, or instruction offered through our Learning Services department. Ongoing assessment enables us to efficiently and flexibly encourage our student’s interests and to meet the academic and developmental needs of all members of the LFCDS family.

“I teach because... it fulfills me to know I can make a difference in a child’s life. It is so gratifying to have former students share something they learned or remember fondly from the year they were in my class.” — Cindy Edwards

Third Grade Teacher

S Traditions Great schools strive to balance the exploration of new ideas with the preservation of their unique mission. At Lake Forest Country Day School, we honor the past by maintaining much-loved annual traditions that bring us together as a purposeful learning community. LFCDS roots run deep in cherished experiences like Pioneer Days, the Robbie Bermingham Speaking Contest, and the annual 8th grade class trip to Washington, D.C. While holding fast to traditions that unite generations of LFCDS students,

26

we look to the future, embracing change by creating initiatives that hold the promise of further enriching our students’ lives. The recent launch of the LFCDS House system provides one such example. LFCDS’ program brings students, faculty, and staff together in four different houses named after prominent School figures Alcott, Bell, Farwell, and Mason. Through school-wide events, the House system fosters camaraderie that will endure long after students leave LFCDS.

“I teach because... I believe that the people who can span language and culture barriers are those that will build those elusive bridges to international peace and intercultural collaboration.” — Nan Caldwell

Chair of Foreign Language, Spanish Teacher

S World Languages Thanks to a thorough engagement in world languages, an LFCDS education provides a passport to an increasingly interconnected world. The School teaches students the fundamentals of Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and French in the ECC and Lower School. Upon entering the Upper School, students choose to undertake a rigorous study of one of these languages for the remainder of their time at LFCDS. From linguistic building blocks to the mastery of

34

tenses, the School’s world language curriculum prepares children to view the world from broader perspectives, compare and contrast languages and cultures, and appreciate the importance of communication in international communities. In the process, LFCDS students are better equipped to meet the challenges of global citizenship and are poised to discover diverse cultural worlds outside of the classroom.

each child’s athletic development. Each participant in LFCDS athletics has the opportunity to play at an appropriate level of competition. In keeping with the School’s core values, our program stresses the importance of good sportsmanship, team commitment, and fundamental skill development, abilities key for successful high school and college athletic careers and healthy lives beyond the playing field.

Dear LFCDS families and friends, “ Why I teach”—such an apt theme for this year’s Annual Report.

In fact, all of us who experience LFCDS through the wonderful education that our children receive here know with strong conviction that the quality of our teachers and the nurturing and challenging instruction they provide our students are among the primary reasons “why we are all a part” of the Lake Forest Country Day School community.

This annual report also serves as a timely highlight of all the volunteer and financial support given to LFCDS during the past fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2013. Please take a moment to peruse the impressive list of donors to the Annual Fund. In many additional ways, these same donors, and others, give so selflessly and enthusiastically of their time and talent to make LFCDS truly special and differentiated. The programming and facilities that we are blessed to steward, as well as the outstanding teachers we have within our four walls, are the result of this top-of-mind generosity that is so well highlighted in this report. LFCDS would not be what it is today without this spirit of giving— 40

whether in the classroom as an educator, on a field trip as a chaperone, within each grade as a room parent, on the school board as a trustee, for the annual auction as a committee participant, for the Annual Giving Fund as an envelope stuffer— no matter the job, each one is important, valued, and accretive to our success! Thank you for your family’s support—it truly makes a difference. On June 30, we said good bye and wished a fond farewell to Michael and Frances Robinson, who served the institution with distinction for eight years, with Michael at the helm as Head of School and Frances as a classroom teacher. They gave many gifts to the school—leadership, enthusiasm, a love for children, and an understanding of the possibilities that a great independent school education can give a learner. The LFCDS community wishes them all the best as they move on. Simultaneously we collectively extend a warm welcome to Bob and Annie Whelan and their family, who arrive to lead our fair school toward new

horizons of success. The LFCDS community and our neighboring towns have greeted Bob and his fine family with open arms—please get to know him, and get behind the incredible positive energy he has brought to 145 South Green Bay Road. Finally, heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to serve as your board chair these past four years. I stand in awe of the academic rigor and inspiration our teachers deliver daily, of the incredible volunteer engine that makes up the fabric of our school, and in particular of fellow trustees with whom I feel so honored to have been associated. Warmest wishes also to Wendy Weil, who was unanimously acclaimed as your new chair. For the opportunity to serve with all of you, heartfelt thanks! Sincerely,

Frederick G. Wacker III ’74 Chairman, Board of Trustees
