From the

Head of School

Dear Parents and Friends of Whitby It is with great appreciation that I write this foreword to the 2011 – 2012 Annual Report. Whitby is approaching a wonderful ‘moment in time’ as we prepare to mark the fifty-fifth anniversary of the School in 2013. This ‘Emerald’ anniversary has been made possible by the generosity and support of Whitby families past and present. Today, Whitby stands proudly as a school of excellence with a desire and a vision to be a market leader in this region. As we look forward to further campus development, Whitby remains committed to its students, parents, faculty and staff, and to the ideals set out in our mission statement. The 2011 – 2012 school year was one of transition. Through the hard work and dedication of the Board of Trustees a new Head of School was recruited and this has led to a focus on continued development in all aspects of school life. During this period the school continued to enjoy the blessings of a committed school community reflected in record giving levels for both the Whitby Fund and the Spring Benefit. We are extremely grateful to all those who generously gave of both their time and resources to ensure that Whitby continues to provide for each child within our educational program. It has been a joy for my family and I to join such a supportive and generous community. We look forward to providing dedicated service to our new community and to fulfilling our part as contributing members of this unique school. As we say in Ireland: “Trí na chéile a thógtar na cáisléain.” In our togetherness (as a team), castles are built. In other words, teamwork and co-operation are required to complete great projects. Best wishes,

Bryan Nixon

From the

Chair of the Board

On behalf of the Whitby School’s Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the parents, faculty and staff for helping to make the 2011-12 academic year such a successful and productive year. There were many remarkable developments at Whitby during the 2011-12 academic year, including enrollment reaching over 400 students for the first time in Whitby’s history; continuous advancements in our academic, athletics and extracurricular programs; an amazingly successful Spring Benefit; significant improvements in our faculty and staff compensation packages; and the exciting selection of Bryan Nixon as our new Head of School! This 2012-13 academic year is already off to a positive and promising start as the Whitby community enthusiastically comes together under Bryan Nixon’s leadership. In November 2010, the Board of Trustees approved the 3-year Strategic Plan and embarked on a collaborative effort focusing on four overarching goals: Educational Continuum, Academics & Administration, Communications & Community, and Finances and the Future. We are thankful for your generosity and support which has made it possible for us to make considerable progress towards many of those goals. Over 95% of families generously donated to Whitby in 2011-2012 – contributing over one and a half million dollars towards operating expenses and capital investments. Of the $1,569,381 in funds raised this past academic year, $507,790 was in the form of restricted or capital funds. $437,150 of these restricted funds have been allocated towards (i) further upgrading our technology infrastructure with the purchase of laptops and iPads; (ii) enhancing our Science 6 | Whitby School Annual Report of Donors

curriculum with state-of-the art equipment including digital microscopes and Labquest probeware; (iii) further investing in professional development for our faculty and staff; and (iv) expanding our Athletics Program with the purchase of new team uniforms and equipment including soccer and lacrosse goals, a baseball/softball back-stop with batting cage and pitching machine, and team benches. Through your ongoing support you continue to demonstrate that the best investment we can all make is in our children and their education. The Board of Trustees, Bryan Nixon and the senior leadership team continue to refine Whitby’s vision for the future. As our retention and enrollment continues to grow, we are acutely aware of the requirements for increased and improved academic programs, space, and facilities to meet the needs of our growing and changing student enrollment. We are working together intensively to address these pressing needs while also working towards fulfilling Whitby’s long-term strategic vision. We are excited that our unified and concerted efforts will provide the Whitby community with a vision and master plan that we can all enthusiastically support. We are honored that you have chosen to be a part of the Whitby family and look forward to sharing with you and your children many wonderful and inspiring years at Whitby. Sincerely,

Patricia Franklin Chair, Whitby School Board of Trustees Whitby School Annual Report 2011-2012 | 6

Enriching the Way in

Science

$80,750 (18%) of the $437,150 in restricted funds donated to support Strategic Plan Initiatives were raised to support curriculum enhancements and equipment in Science. Inspired by Discovery… Enriching the Way in Science Integrating the acclaimed and rigorous International Baccalaureate program, Whitby’s Strategic Plan recognizes the fundamental role that Science plays in preparing our children to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. Thanks to the generosity of our 2010-2011 Benefit donors, our children expanded their scientific understanding through partnerships with the Connecticut Science Center, Soundwaters Coastal Explorers Program, and the use of state of the art telescopes. Our teachers have received continuous professional development in Math and Science to enrich the children’s experience, developing innovative and hands-on learning experiences. As our student body continues to grow, our Science program must expand, also. Our children, in addition to experiencing the benefits of the excellent classroom teaching and partnerships, also require the equipment essential to scientific discovery. To this end, our science department has used this year’s reverse auction donations to provide items such as the following: - Additional scientific scales, to ensure that all children in the classroom are actively participating in the learning process - New compound and digital microscopes, to not only increase each student’s exposure time using these essential pieces of equipment, but also to improve the quality of that experience - Labquest probeware and its accompanying monitoring software and hardware to allow our children to conduct experiments and collect and analyze data to study real time biological and ecological changes Each of these items–some time-tested and persistently essential, some exciting new tools to inspire discovery–are vital to fulfilling the incredible potential of Whitby’s inquiry-based science curriculum.

Leading the Way in

Classroom Technology $166,250 (38%) of the $437,150 in restricted funds donated to support Strategic Plan Initiatives were raised specifically to support Technology. Engaged in Learning… Leading the Way in Classroom Technology Educational technology applications continue to advance exponentially, and to keep abreast, today’s schools must evolve and develop innovative programs incorporating these changes. Whitby consistently leads the way in the area of technology in the classroom. Thanks to the generosity of our families, the School has developed extraordinary laptop computer programs in Upper Elementary and Middle School, allowing our children to move confidently forward into tomorrow’s world. Whitby recognizes that our children must be ready for the world of the future while also acquiring essential academic and intellectual skills. The integration of laptop computers into Whitby’s classrooms has enhanced learning globally, promoting the advancement of Math, Science, Composition, and Research skills, among others. Our children are learning to organize their thoughts quickly, efficiently, and definitively, 21st century skills essential to success. Supporting the differentiation that Whitby strives to provide, learning is advanced at each child’s level via enriching computer-supported activities. The use of laptops not only helps deepen the engagement of our children in their learning, but also allows for individualization, providing opportunities for our teachers to meet every child’s needs in efficient, high quality ways. To this end, the School has increased the number of laptops and accompanying software throughout the elementary school. This has allowed for increased allocation of laptops to the Middle Elementary classrooms, as well as the extension of the laptop program into the Lower Elementary classrooms. Whitby has also committed to advancing the very successful classroom use of iPad applications by increasing the number of iPads and accompanying software available in the School, accompanied by the appropriate training. In addition, our technology department continues to investigate emerging technologies, and when appropriate will also consider these for our children as well. In accordance with its Strategic Plan, Whitby is committed to implementing an ever-expanding technology program that exists not only in its own right, but also boldly supports learning in Math, Science, Composition, and all other academic areas.

Readying the Way in

Athletics

$186,500 (43%) of the $437,150 in restricted funds donated to support Strategic Plan Initiatives were raised specifically to support Athletics. Fearless Achievers… Readying the Way in Athletics As Whitby expands, our Athletic Program is constantly changing, growing, and developing. The Whitby student body has grown significantly in Grades 1-8 over the last several years, and our children have become increasingly more interested in expanding their athletic options, both during and after the school day. Whitby parents expressed the same desire regarding our athletics and sports offerings in the recent parent survey. In fulfillment of this Strategic Plan Initiative, and in response to the expressed interest of the Whitby community, Whitby’s Board of Trustees established the Athletics Committee to work closely with the School to improve and expand our children’s choices. Whitby’s Athletics Committee has collaborated actively with the Administration to identify the needs of our Athletics and Physical Education programs, while also considering what the ideal program might look like. To this end, Whitby identified items and programs that will prepare our School to be a leader both now and in the future across two main categories: Improvements to Indoor and Outdoor Facilities: Such items to include resurfacing of the tennis courts, provision of electronic scoreboards, and soccer field treatment and repair. The Athletics Committee and the Administration have also explored ways to improve, expand, and complement the School’s indoor athletic space to facilitate WECCP and sport activities. Sports Specific Equipment: Such items include a baseball cage and pitching machine, tennis equipment, portable soccer goals, and lacrosse, track and field, and gymnastics equipment. Whitby is committed to providing a compelling, competitive, meaningful, and enriching athletics program.

Ways of

Giving

There are several ways to make a gift to our school: direct gifts of cash or securities with associated tax benefits, and planned gifts which offer the opportunity to make a significant gift to Whitby over a period of time while also addressing personal financial goals by incorporating tax and estate planning.

Whitby Annual Fund – The only recurring, yearly fundraising campaign supported by all members of the Whitby community (parents, alumni, friends and faculty and staff). Gifts to the Annual Fund constitute the most important source of unrestricted funds available to the School outside of tuition, to both support the operating budget and enhance every aspect of the Whitby experience. Annual Spring Benefit – Largest social event and fundraiser of the year, and traditionally includes dinner, dancing, entertainment and auctions. Organized by the Parents Association, and attended by most families and faculty and staff. Funds raised by this event support the operating budget, as well as supporting Strategic Plan Initiatives. Whitby School Legacy Lecture Series – Parent and student alumni are encouraged to support this initiative to further the mission of Whitby, both beyond the campus, and beyond eighth grade, which funds an annual speaker series Whitby Angels Fund – For individuals or families who want to make a significant donation in any school year, in the absence of a formal Capital Campaign underway. Requires a minimum donation of $30,000.

28 | Whitby School Annual Report of Donors

Capital Campaign – A multi-year strategic fundraising effort periodically used to request significant financial investments from Whitby families ([past and present) towards new and improved facilities and restricted funds/endowments to meet the long-term needs and preserve Whitby’s legacy well into the future.

Ways of Giving Direct Gifts Cash or Checks – Cash or checks may be made payable to Whitby School Online Giving – Whitby accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express. To make an online contribution, please go to www.whitbyschool.org/onlinegiving Matching Gifts – Many companies will match contributions made by an employee (or by an employee’s spouse) to a not-for-profit institution. Gift of Securities – Gifts of appreciated securities are an excellent way to make a gift. Donors receive a deduction for the entire amount of the stock transferred and avoid taxes on capital gains. Please contact the Development Office for instructions.

Planned Gifts Planned giving provides Whitby School income while providing economic benefits to your estate. Estate planning is constantly changing, so you are advised to consult with your financial advisors to consider options that would benefit you most. Options to consider include the following: Bequests – cash, property or share of an estate in your will - allows you to make a gift in the future to Whitby without affecting your cash flow or portfolio now. Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust – allows you to retain income benefits from the assets you give to Whitby, and thus afford a larger gift. Charitable Lead Trust – support programs at Whitby for a fixed period of time with the principal going to your heirs. Gifts of Life Insurance – create a policy or donate a paid-up policy whose coverage you no longer need. For more information on giving opportunities available at Whitby School, please contact the Development Office, at development@whitbyschool.org or 203-302-3958. All requests for information will be kept confidential.

Thank you! Whitby is grateful to the many families and friends who give so generously of their time, skills, and financial resources to the school. Our Trustees, the Parents Association, Divisional Leaders, Class Parents, Committee Members, and all the other friends, faculty, and families listed in this report represent only a fraction of the many volunteers and supporters who help in countless ways throughout the year.
