SHANGRI LA, lOST PARADISE? Architecture as a tool for revealing Shangri la’s backstage stories.

Perhaps the essence of travel is discover if your dreams are real. Throughout history, some of the ‘destinations‘ have become legendary, such as Shangri La, the city that built around expectation. The replicas of Shangri La were framed by the concept of paradise and were commercialized to drive many an intrepid soul to follow its calling without a keen of a trap for tourists. Tourism could be a metaphor of a stage play. Once you’re in it, you’re not even aware of. The city will only allow you to encounter parts it wants to. Like in Shangri La there are also other parts that are hidden or overlooked from outsider. Like in Shangri La there are also other parts that are hidden or overlooked from outsider. Nowadays, only a few knows that Shangri La derived from a mythical novel, The Lost Horizon by James Hilton, a fantasy that become real, unlike other city where book inspired from it. Shangri La become even more solidity when chinese government declared their assumption that this lost paradise was situated in Deqen, Yunnan due to the marketing beneficiation within the local prefecture. But the truth is it’s never existed and Shangri La is no Eden. This earthly paradise falls short of perfection. Although the terrain where many Tibetan Buddhists live may be beautiful, it takes a toll on the locals. Bodies do age, often prematurely so, unlike those of preternaturally youthful inhabitants in a novel. The defined wrinkles and weathered skin of Tibetans testify to the difficulty of survival in this extreme environment. Therefore, this project aim to unfold another side of the stories, or the backstage stories which the factor that makes tourism business run in the city might kept the stories away from you whether it is because they consciously hide it, forgot a value of it, think it not worth showing, or neglected.

SHANGRI LA, lOST PARADISE? The instant Sublime and Subliminal Filters Studio INDA YEAR 4 SPRING 2018

DESIGN TYPOLOGIES The challenge is to add a contrast fabric on an urban layer of the town that look fuse in or unintentional but actually is and resulted a vocabulary of architectures combined with a framing technique that highlight, add, and even subtract the existing yet unharming that will commit a new aspect of how tourists view and found shangri la.

The image and city context of shangri la were framed and commercialized by the concept of paradise, I would like to take everyone back to the romanticism painting where the chosen painting “ rocky ravine by caspar david fredrich (painting of elb mountain) From painting I chose to explore a technique of framing which is a stand out character.Framing is a technique in art used by artists to control what they want us to see and push out the unwanted element. by using a canvas border to define the limit and boundary. and If boundary and frame effect the way we see painting as a whole, do they still provide same effect when separate. Therefore, I intend to use 3 means to illustrate a different in this painting (Adding, subtract, and Enlarge). after modification i came across that each of element become its own frame and if there are changes, it could totally shift the way we perceive that image

And for Wearable Device, using the theory that create an effect to our eyes and experiment on simulating that particular effect by create a device that responds to each specific condition like how we are limited by boundary, and explore on outside of our field of view or visual boundary. The first device is to Simulate that canvas border in real life by restrict our vision down, narrowing our field of view. The second device is to Simulate the painting by teleporting your eyes to the back of yourself, changing the framing by include yourself as a subject in the view and what is in front of you as a background.

People conjure images of far-off locales based on what they read, watch or desire and spend a lot of time and effort searching to discover if the vision we see in our head can be matched by any form of reality and the picture mostly commercialized. It was already framed by someone who control how they would want you to see that image. They could push unwanted element out and curated new realities for you to see. And that’s how Shangri la emerged was using the same concept. Vice versa from other city where story taking idea or inspiration from the city, Shangri la started from a word – a novel that become a city.Hence, I would like to introduce you to the real history based of Shangri la in summary through my archive timeline. This is how media influencing each other and the curated realities in Shangri la go even further by the view that got commercialized through the camera lens. Either from postcard, magazine, and even in social media and travel review blog And this gives me idea of what is beyond of the border? What is outside the frame? So I explore further on the Geotagged Photo Map. A Map that plot where all the pictures are taken, Focusing on the chosen subject or landmark.

So i Plot the tagged images of the similar subject in different vantage points, showing different information since using different focal length. After experiencing Shangri La on my own and combined with a research give me an idea of whether Shangri la is lost or found?

MECHANISM TREE STATION Elevated bike path+station over 14th street in Nyc PA R S O N S Y E A R 4 FA L L 2 0 1 8

MECHANISM TREE Elevated Bike Path and Bike Station to solve the bikers traffic on the street level.

The design of a new elevated bike path as another urban layer of the New York City context over 14th street due to an absence of an L line subway from Brooklyn towards Manhattan. By introducing the design of a roundabouts elevated bike path system into the 14th street cut with 1st and 2nd avenue by providing more directions for a bikers without inturrupting the existed car ways, which help efficiently generate the bike traffic on street level. Along with the design of a Bike Station which the constraint is to allow least intrusion on pedestrian way, consequently the design is limited in term of space . The station inevitably grows vertically resemble to a tree that seeking for space up in the sky. There are two ways for entering the station on bike elevated bike path and from pedestrian level. The station accomodated with a sufficient size of programs providing 20 Bike Lockers, Grab and Go Coffee Shop, and Bike Repair Station.

FUSE NETWORKING Architecture as a tool to tie up the society in Thonburi Bangkok Yai Community.

Micro Breeding

When a site itself inevitably dealing with two sharply different types of people who, perform different routine yet sharing a relation in terms of surrounding or environment, questioning how would those two types : tourists and locals could live perfectly together? Although one might say Bangkok Yai has been a tourist attraction for long time, in my point of view there are not enough tourist accommodation spot. Since residential buildings take up most of the space led the locals’ houses became a tourist attraction. Their front dock was developed into a public connecting veranda provide merely for tourist route along the canal linking all houses together to become one floating market where locals also open up their house as a shop like restaurant or souvenir shops. The locals would just lay table in front of their house and sell things. However, there are no organize space to support the growing amount of tourist. What happened is tourists are forcing to walk along the veranda without getting time to take a look at stuff because if they do stop, there would be a huge human traffic behind them.

This device is designed to “growing” a leisure space for tourist in this hometown to promote economic and at the same time creating a tourist hub where people could spend time longer than 10 minutes walking through during the day. Hence, tourist will absorb local’s slow life lifestyle as long as they want. While during the night the device turning itself to become a “self-protection” device for locals houses at night. Since their docks already become a public veranda might cause insecure feelings √

FUSE NETWORKING IN T H O N B U R I B A N G K O K YA I Urbreed Studio INDA YEAR 3 SPRING 2017

The device is basically called a folding facade. Which is a daytime when it active the local could operate the device themselves by unfolding a facade to be a sub-slab or a leveled seating space that grows vertically, so it would not take up a lot of space of veranda and not be harming the value of this historic neighborhood. In the night time, the facade or device will fold itself back and give a second protection to the villagers' houses by not allow the access through a dock.

Breeding Invasion Do Modern Development really make us become less social? Has it changed the relationship among people in community to be more persistent and pervasive? This statement led up to the idea of this intervention, “to tie up the society” meant that this design would be represent as a share social structure which is developed from the tourist hub device to become something bigger in both size and meaning.

The design scope changes from designing for tourist to focus more on the major type of people in the community which is locals. The industrialization of modern societies in todays’ world has had an enormous effection reducing the traditional ways of communication among people. Thonburi Bangkok Yai area demand of more specific spaces that fulfils the Socio– cultural relationships of the neighborhood. The diagram illustrates one reason why people in the community lacking of interaction among each other which is the orientation of their houses orient in different direction.

In typical community, people use two main cells which are from home to workplace and vice versa, however, I want to introduce other cells like leisure, and share space to the site. Where it is basically create a transient role of people in community. The intervention is designed as an architecture tool to cause a reorientation of the locals routine patterns to adapt themselves to a device. It will increase people in community interaction and sense of communal attitude. The concept apply similary with the concept of natural selection "Phototroprism"which plant growth direction lean towards the sunlight while in this case, people routine pattern lean toward the activities happen within the devices.

Design Typologies & Configuration The design structure is a combination of many basic ideas and concepts, embodies several of the features lacking in the area and aiming to “tie up the society. It cooperates a share facilitiesfor communal activities that are not existed there such as an area for washing, playground, and leisure space that forced to be shared and people will automatically have to socialize with each other.

The intervention is designed to match with existing routine and local lifestyle like doing chores, chatting, gathering for watching boxing or football while kids are participating more on outdoor area. Some of routines are missing due to now people like to spend their times isolate in their house. With this device hoping to return the old traditional pattern of society back, as well as provide a promising facilities, and serve as a lantern that light up the in between houses area at night.Hoping that the device will return traditional communication pattern of the society back, as well as provide promising facilities that are lacking on the site.

Future Exchange presents two concepts of time, beginning from where there are no device till the device start growing on site showing how behavior that used to take place in houses start growing outside, publicly. Increase interation between people in community, enhace sense or attitude of communal. future prediction devided in to 3 proposals 1. network structure where all devices being connected to unite the whole community. 2. free standing struction - a multilevel tower with multifunction 3. a building extension

RAJASTHAN DWELLING A Wall of Plug in

A micro dwelling parasitical unit that is introduce to India according to the overpopulated and high density in family household issue. This project aiming to offer a living choice of individualize space, privacy, and provided a filtration system which responds to harsh climatology in India without gaining any extra spaces, instead returning a space back to society.

RAJASTHAN VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE A Typical Haveli in Jaisalmer

A cultural rich, and artistic state, covered more than ten percents in the north-western region of India. It located on the Thar dessert which effects directly to a climate condition in this region. Consequently, Rajasthani are only experience hot and dry weathers. Based on the overcrowded population (around 68.89 millions), Rajasthan falls into a critical high density area issue since the ancient time. Undoubtedly, there are various type of architectural building in this state. However, this study scope down to only focus on an Indian vernacular building called Haveli which specifically located in a city called Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer A small city famous for handicraft. The streets are narrow and winding with a high dense of building all along the side. Spaces are very rare. Therefore, the social activities are happened between the buildings in limited area. This shows the limit distances between each building and how the height of the building when compare the the width of the street is large in order to create shades for a collective space (where there are market, or a square where people hangout) between building.

top : The manifesto demonstrates an over populated issue in Jaipur, which presenting a contrast between local identities and modern buildings that are a densification tools. However, the modern buildings are not taking in an account of the local identities. This lead to an argument that how can we combine both local uniqueness and modern densification building together.

HAVELI The most complex and interesting architectural building, denotes a private residence which originally build by the rich merchant or nobility who want to imitate the lifestyle of loyalty. Havelis in Jaisalmer are made out of yellow sandstone and paved the floor with tiles. The typical Haveli rose 3-4 stories.

C O U R T YA R D Major element of constructing a Haveli is courtyard. With hot and dry climate in India, it keep the interior cool, allow the air ventilation to access. It serve as a shading system but also allow light inside. The high walls that enclose the courtyard keep the inhabitants feel secure.

VASTU SHASTRA The rooms organization borrowed the idea of Vastu Shastra, where the spaces are emerge from a single point. The rooms and activities are revolve around the center courtyard area. Courtyard associated with outdoor recreation of a women to do their chores without being seen by public. Perhaps, wedding ceremony or annual festive are held in the courtyard as well.

WINDOW TYPOLOGIES The windows' function is not only serve for controlling the necessary amount of wind and light but also be a shield to protect inhabitants especially women from the gaze of the strangers. Mostly windows are serve as decoration purposes. There are 2 distinct characteristics of the window. The overhang one and the flat one. The overhang one, famous jharokha, providing a platform hanging out from the facade for the women to view outside without being seen by public. The jali, a perforated screen, the flat one. Made out of sandstone or wood carved into a specific patterns for example, geometrical shape, nature inspired or flora pattern which reflect a thoughtful meaning like loyalty, treasure, wealthy, or arrogance.

AGGREGATION Generated in to 2 options by applying similar unit models. There are 11 types of model and each unit forms are based on the form of furniture. So the units are different by its program For example, 1. Bedroom 2. Kitchen

based on shape of the bed based on kitchen counter

3. Bathroom base on the bathtub shape the unit pattern are the adaptation from a jaali which help both in 1.Response to climatological as it filter the amount of light that access the space and act as a shading that give shadow in the afternoon, while at night it allow the wind ventilation to cool down the space. Before putting on the unit the light will directly goes into a building but when putting a unit on the facade the unit will act as a double wall or filter that lessen the amount of light into a space. 2. Give privacy not allow public to see inside. There are variety of patterns that give different dense base on each room function. Different room require different privacy purposes . Ex. bedroom require most dense as it need most privacy and shading while Kitchen require least dense as it need a light space to release smoke and smell.

top : The implementation, Basically giving a skin to an existing building by the skin itself is an extension unit that provides specific program up to dwellers' preferences which response to new indian's contemporary needs that process by modern society. With a shared circulation facilities. By the skin could be applied to any existing residential building that spread around town. Each unit will be arranged

differently

to

create

different

characters to each building. right: Collective spaces - on shared floor

OPTION I The specific room While highly compact living unit inside could not meet

The unit will be attach to a scaffolding system that

the basic need, the expansion unit could realize people

clipped on to the facade. Therefore the unit will

in modern age desire.

share the access inside through front facade.

for option I Residents are free to choose their own unit depend on the function they want. This project will work best for a person who desire for his/her personal space but still need to be part of the family. For example,

Vedant He work as a freelance online so he

need his own workspace at home however, he lives in a big family so obviously there are not enough space. So people like him could buy the unit and attach his unit up on facade that connecting to their family apartment

OPTION IIT The specific room although this city is very dense but there are many space to explore and to utilize a perk of the existing building. By the left space that could be utilize is a party wall. A residential unit will attach to the party wall through scaffolding system but in this option the units are growing independently without any connection to an actual building. The structure provide its own staircases on both side of the balcony that connect all rooms together.

User for this type of dwelling would be one who manage to live individually, one who fleeing from a big family to seek for a privacy like For example, Anika who just graduated and get bored of living in a big family so she will fit in this type of space.

JOSEPH JOSEPH HEADQUARTER Company DNA Studio INDA YEAR 2 SPRING 2016

JOSEPH JOSEPH HEADQUARTER a kitchenware company base in London

Analysis of the comtemporary iconic kitchenware

brand

called

JOSEPH

JOSEPH by finding the logic and dnd behind the brand then experiment on business material in 2 components. First thing is “ The Testing Kitchen that being developed to enable the customers and the designers to test out the real product since the brand mainly sell online. It also gives an experience of being in the space that exhibited as a kitchen which evokes sense of newness in kitchenware design field. Then the idea of experiencing design got developed furthur in the area of the brand, itself, headquarter office. With the design inspiration from the product which joseph joseph invented, which researching on the spike horizontal surface becoming both form and facade of the headquarter. This kind of facade allowed the brand to represent its own identities and advertised the product which function through architectural. The design articulates as a brand dnd, simple but functional. The building grids act like a supporter to hold the program boxes in place. The grids are freely moveable which there are no fixed location of program since the brand believe that things should be adaptive through times. The space between grids are also serve as an exhibition space as well as the major intention is to utilize space as much as possible while also introducing greenery in to the area.

THE BLOOM Neighbors

The studio started from designing a group masterplan which our group’s site located on the hill where we were assigned to specific plot which my habitat located as a part of mountain and nature by representing its organic form that goes along the landscape lines. The stories of this dwelling was based on the specific topographic each lay on. The different topography also brought up the benefit about privacy and functional of programs like bedroom or bathroom since glass is the major material and as the habitat situated on the highland I use the perk of circle floor plan to create a 360 degrees panoramic scenic to obtain the view as much as possible and glass contain a transparent quality that will allow the inhabitants to be part of the nature suit the concept of living in the nature. Beside standard programs like bedroom/ bathroom/ kitchen/ dining hall. The bloom also provide a home office and a sunken living room that isolated itself from other programs. The furnitures also adaptive to the form of a house to effectively utilize the limited of space. The bloom is resemble to a flowers that bloom in a forest adding a livelyness to the green forest.

BBA LIBRARY a renovation project for faculty of commerce and accountancy, chulalongkorn university in collabs with ruchchapa, phapawee, woraphan, chadaporn

Our major plan for this renovation is to “Bring back the overlooked aesthetic of the library. because we believe that environment affects mood of learning. In the main design we aimed to cooporate architectural design and built-in furniture assemblingly to create a sense of unity while also connecting the whole space together. We also looking to separating zone by using the idea of heirachy. The floor platform start from the first level increased step by step as a function of spaces are shifted. Since the existed library allow minimum amount of natural light, the colors and decorations are not encouraging for study, and furnitures are not functional and organized we chose to start from the main color for this space. Yellow is chose to paint an overall wall. While using light wooden flooring for matching. There are even a scientific proof that yellow enhances learning and influence mood in educational environment. It creates a positive feeling, keep users maintaining their attention, and encouraging educational activities. Besides color we also designed a light and air open space by building a large windows and took out thick mass furnitures that prevent the penetration of light. Moreover we generated a space without wall which give a multi purposes need within one space also a low shelving that do not block the light as well as gave easier for patron wayfinding and staff oversight.

BBA CO-WORKING SPACE

LOYY Handmade Inflatable Furniture

The idea is to make what feels heavy light. Start by observing what stone can not do such as Fly, Swim, Breath, walk, run, move, see, hear, grow, speak, bend, inflate, and be light and by using plastic material that hold qualities of Bend, inflate, fold, change colour, change shape, be light, and be see through to substitute the heavy rock. By metaphoring inflatable plastic as a rock we design, rethink, develop, create, combine, communicate, captivate, inspire, and imagine what is the possibilities to create a furniture that resemble to a nature. The patterns of each one come from different types of stone such as prae, akanee, pakarang, and takon. By this workshop all of us starting by design collaboratingly and creating a PR campaign like videos and photoshoots then eventually sell on instragram

BAAN BAT ENTRANCE GATE Design an entrance installation for Design build for Community Workshop INDA YEAR 3 SPRING 2017

BAAN BAT Entrance gate

The Ban Bat community in Bangkok is one of the oldest and best known urban OTOP in the capital (One Tambon - province - One Product). For more than a century residents have been producing monk’s bowls following the methods inherited from the Buddhist tradition: the entire process is carried out by hand and the craft is transmitted through generations. As cheaper, industrial bowls from China are overtaking the everyday market, Ban Bat’s residents are struggling to reinvent their economy, catering to local and foreign tourism in order to preserve their traditions and identity while upgrading their precarious living conditions. This pilot project creates a new entrance gate to the main Soi. This public space provides shade, greenery and simple urban furniture, a space of rest for locals and visitors alike. A large mural, as well as detailed panels, introduce visitors to the history of the community and the process of bat-making while facilitating their navigation with the aid of clear maps and legends. The main structure is inspired by the metal-working techniques of the local artisans which allowed for their direct involvement in the construction process and ensure ease of maintenance with the community’s own resources. Special construction details have been developed in collaboration with Bangkok-based StudioMake to teach the students simple metal-work procedures, involving everyone in the construction while maintaining a safe margin of control on the precision of execution. In particular, a plug-weld joint connects all the main pieces together, avoiding the need for neat surface welds.

PARTICIPATORY DESIGN a series of participatory design workshops, meetings and a communal “dinner and dance” were organized by the Thai students with the Ban Bat community in preparation for the design build project. Residents’ opinions were oriented around 3 main objectives : to represent their identity in a mural, preserve the craft and increase social activity. Everyone agreed in the value of tourism but

BID BY BIT Booth Design

Shop in person, online. For the Urban Millennial looking for a new way of online shopping, BidByBit is an online bidding platform that provides an interactive, fun, and transparent system due to its live features and 2-way communication channel.

We are BidByBit, an online live bidding platform based in Bangkok, Thailand. Our platform allows sellers to directly auction their products through livestream video, while the buyers are able to bid and interact with the seller and other buyers through a live chat feed. Firstly, we aim to add an aspect of entertainment to the typical auction process. For example, on Youtube, people often subscribe to certain Youtubers that produce content they enjoy; on BidByBit, people may follow engaging sellers who provides products suited to their interests. Secondly, we want to provide a transparent system that allows for a 2-way interaction between buyers and sellers, the same 2-way communication one would have when shopping in person, hence our slogan: Shop in person, online. For example, in the live chat feed, buyers may request to see the certificate of authenticity, or how the shirt fits on the seller, or a 360 degree view of the product to check for any marks. We also further provide further security by acting as an intermediary between the buyer and seller if there were to be a dispute between the authenticity or false advertisement of the product. BidByBit targets Urban Millennials who is looking to purchase brand names and fashionable goods (first and second-hand), since these products will most benefit from a 2-way transparent interaction. Eventually, 2 years down the line we also aim to move into the second-hand niche electronic products market such as film cameras, vinyl record players, and vinyl records, since a large selling factor of these products is the fact that they are one-of-a-kind with hard to define price. This is a niche market with low competition rate so we expected to be able to grow rapidly

BID BY BIT Application Design

Shop in person, online. The purpose of this project was to design a platform which would provide value for a selected group of customers and sustain itself as a start up.In the current e-commerce market in Thailand, there are a number of people who take part in live auctioning online; meaning sellers livestream their product while buyers bid in the live chat section. After attending some of these live stream auctions, we realised that there is a community which surrounds it.However, there are pain points suffered by both bidders and sellers that can hinder the experience and efficiency of the auction. Therefore, we created “BidByBit” to target and eliminate these problems. By creating the application “BidByBit” as a live bidding platform, this will fix pain points that can be observed from the original bidding methods. This has to be easily and effortlessly accessible for all individuals, hence the application form is the answer. Also, the application will be convenient and suitable for those who have busy lifestyle, as they will be able to watch and bid the products anywhere and anytime. The mentioned application will be designed as a platform with various features especially for bidding. We are trying to replicate the original auction method; this is why we go for live auctioning on the application. Also, the additional entertainment feature during the bidding session will create enable greater buyer engagement and also allows sellers to truly sell their products. Another feature is the automatic countdown, this will provide convenience for sellers as they have less responsibility to keep track of bidders. In “BidByBit”, finding the products that interest you will not be a difficult job anymore, as in other platforms e.g. Facebook, you may have to search for the page not the products themselves that can be a lot of work while “BidByBit” will be organised with categories which will be easy to find desired products. The application will be designed with better and simpler UX/ UI designed especially for this application, this will provide a positive experience to all bidders as the application will be customer friendly, modern looking, engaging and fun. The application will allow reviews from clients as the application will allow the clients to channel their thoughts about the experiences to boost trusted sellers and encourage better quality sellers, as well as, the product selection. Buyers can follow or favourite certain sellers in order to be notified when they go live, so they will not miss the chance to get the needed goods. Furthermore, onto the post bidding system, once any auction ends, payment from a winning bidder is frozen until product is received, then payment is made to the seller after the bidder confirms that he receives the product as described during the live bidding. The bidder also has the option of using third party payment systems e.g. Paypal to ensure trust and reliability of payment. Lastly, it is allowed returns and refunds of products, only with proof and a legitimate reason from the buyer.

THE FOREST Wonderfruit Super Green, Super Lean, and Super Clean Paviliion.

The Forest is not a building. The Forest is a living landscape that grows and evolves. In The Forest, architecture is nothing else than a framework that defines a minimal controlled space surrounded by living bamboo, whose boundaries expand with time according to the unpredictable vitality of Nature. The Forest exemplifies the core values of Wonderfruit, the enjoyment of the outdoors, the strong sense of community, the strive for sustainability, the desire to leave no trace. Like in ancient ruins, The Forest will eventually dissolve into a natural ecosystem, its artificial marks blending seamlessly into the context as a reminder of a joyful, sustainable society. Multiple entrance paths lead to a central exhibition space. The path is like a trail in the forest. Stones line up to create sitting space, the translucent canopy defines the space while opening up to reveal the thick bamboo mass. A lightweight, waterproof canopy runs around the central space. It is hanging from the surrounding bamboo stems and relies on a central rigid rim, also built in bamboo. The topography rises slightly towards the central opening. Circular pocket spaces open up towards the center like clearings in the forest. Here, behind the curtains, hammock-like structures hang from the surrounding bamboo prviding an intimate break from the communal activities. The forest has a clearly defined beginning, but it has no end. The current rate of deforestation in the world and in Thailand will soon leave us without forests, which means without oxygen, resources and biodiversity. Let’s not build more buildings, let’s build forests!
