Australian album. Wilson turned to more production roles in the year that followed, also scoring the 1976 film Oz, which featured his song Living In The Land Of Oz. His most enduring band, Mondo Rock, was initially formed as a means of promoting the single, but ended up releasing six studio albums over the next 11 years, the breakthrough record being 1981’s Chemistry, featuring State Of The Heart and Cool World. Subsequent albums Nuovo Mondo and The Modern Bop involved frequent line-up changes, until Eric McCusker’s Come Said The Boy became Mondo Rock’s most successful single, peaking at No.2 in 1984. The band released another two records and an EP, with a small hiatus between albums while Wilson recorded his debut solo effort, The Dark Side Of The Man, before dissolving in 1991. In the years since, both Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock have reformed for gigs and tours, including Daddy Cool’s 1994 short tour with Skyhooks, their 2006 album The New Cool and subsequent tour with US legends The Beach Boys; and Mondo Rock’s appearance at the 2006 Countdown Spectacular. That same year, Wilson was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame with Mondo Rock, after having been inducted in his own right in 1989. As a solo artist, Wilson has been just as busy over the past six or seven years, releasing the industry revered Tributary album (through Liberation Blue records) in 2008, a semi-acoustic collection of rearrangements and new versions of lesser-known tunes. As well as releasing countless other compilations, Wilson has toured both solo and with his bands Ross Wilson & The Urban Legends and

Ross Wilson Trio, appearing at such major festivals as A Day On The Green. He has continued to achieve success and make his mark as a composer, his songs being recorded by such artists as Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Custard, Troy Cassar-Daley, You Am I, Renee Geyer and even The Wiggles! Now, as Melbourne prepares for the Spring Racing Carnival, his new band Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks is hitting the road for Ross Wilson’s Spring Carnival Of Rock. Wilson’s latest album I Come In Peace has seen three successful singles - The Same Moon, I Come In Peace and I Got You - receive regular airplay, with audiences of all ages responding to his latest music as he finds renewed relevance in each offering. With rave reviews and a catalogue boasting countless Australian rock classics, don’t miss your chance to catch Ross Wilson and his star-studded band perform on the Peninsula! Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks are performing throughout Victoria, including the Somerville Hotel on Saturday, October 27. Few in the Australian music industry can claim to have had such an enduring, diverse and critically acclaimed career as Ross Wilson. After more than 50 years, half a dozen bands and countless hits, Wilson continues to impress & command respect among peers and fans alike. Coming from a musical household, Wilson first picked up the harmonica in his teens, starting his first band at 17. The Pink Finks saw him team up with Ross Hannaford, who would become his long-time collaborator, and they released a cover of Louie Louie in 1965. After the Finks came the more progressive Party Machine, featuring Spectrum member Mike Rudd. After Party Machine segued into the Sons Of The Vegetal Mother, Wilson and Hannaford formed a side project called Daddy Cool, playing 1950s r’n’b and some of Wilson’s early original material, including the song Eagle Rock. It featured on the band’s debut LP Daddy Who? Daddy Cool, and both reached No.1, the LP becoming the highest selling Australian album. Over the next couple of years Daddy Cool recorded the more experimental Sex, Dope, Rock ‘n’ Roll: Teenage Heaven and toured extensively in the US, but Wilson encountered difficulty in presenting the more progressive material to their audiences. “I felt like it was taking coals to Newcastle,” he was quoted. “You know, singing doo-wop. I thought if I brought a contemporary band, we could really kill.” After their final show in 1973, recorded and released as Daddy Cool Live! The Last Drive-In Movie Show, Wilson and Hannaford enjoyed fleeting success with the band Mighty Kong, before a brief reformation for the legendary Sunbury Pop Festival in 1974. They played alongside Skyhooks, a band Wilson would take time off to produce for their debut album Living In The 70s. That record would prove hugely successful, overtaking his own Daddy Cool debut to become the highest selling

Pearl ‘Paints It Pink’ with a VIP party... JEFF LANG HEADLINES MAIN ST FESTIVAL

October is here and with it comes PEARL’s 2nd VIP party, set to both be a great night out in one of our fine venues on the Peninsula, and also a truly worthwhile fundraising initiative for those that really need vital funds. The Social will be the venue, Saturday October 13 is the date, and we have a bunch of very generous and giving sponsors who have jumped on board. You can find out all about it on page 13 where you will find our ‘Pink Page’. Now, I hear you ask, “Who’s that poser in the photo on the left?” Well, my friends, there’s no darting around the subject... it’s me. However, there’s a method to the shameless self-promoting madness. I, along with Jeff Lang (to your right) and a host of other Peninsula artists are performing at this year’s Main Street Mornington Food, Wine & Performing Arts Festival Sunday October 21st. Make sure you come out and see all the festival has to offer and if you’re at a loose end, see my band play a set! :) Full program on page 23. Also, we speak with Missy Higgins about her new album, tour and upcoming Queenscliff Music Festival performance, Lachlan checks in from the US for this month’s Hip To Be Country and we bring you news of Hat Fitz & Cara, Ross Wilson and Electric Mary coming to the area. We also talk to Peninsula Short Film Festival, and their celebrity judging panel, speak with RPP FM host (& PEARL reviewer) Matt Rippon about life in local radio, and bring you my chat with Footy Show host (& Beers By The Bay Festival MC) James Brayshaw. In adrenalin sports, we hear about Marty Brown, a Peninsula local doing some great things for budding boarders in PNG, Eddie speaks with the one and only Nick Wallace, we preview a fantastic Vintage Surf Day planned for Point Leo, look ahead to the MOSS Jam at Mt Eliza Skate Park and talk ‘bodyboarding’, with the forthcoming Victorian Bodyboarding State Titles to be the largest bodyboarding event for amateurs in state titles history! With October & November here, we look at some Oktoberfest celebrations happening, and Racing season is kicking off. We also wrap up the Impakt Freeza Battle Of The Bands event! Plenty of Festival News, Arts, Reviews, Columns and more, coming at you once again. Some MAJOR giveaways to be given away as well, so keep checkin’ Facebook. Over and out. Guitarist Jeff Lang will headline this year’s Main Street Mornington Food, Wine and Performing Arts Festival. As a youngster, Lang was inspired to pick up the guitar after listening to the likes of Bob Dylan, Cold Chisel, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young, and his back-tobasics approach to the blues has helped fuel a movement that includes the John Butler Trio, Ash Grunwald and Xavier Rudd. With a “baker’s dozen” of albums to his credit, including collaborations and solo records, his most recent album, Carried In Mind, earlier this year won him the 12th Annual National Folk Recording Award. “It’s a nice surprise when people appreciate and acknowledge the work you do and what you do in general,” Lang says of the award. I tried and make a record that feels like, if it wasn’t me, it would be something that I would find rewarding and really want to listen to.” Recently Lang has been performing shows around the country, many in regional areas he hasn’t played for a few years. “The shows have been great. It’s been a real mixture of recent stuff mixed with hits and memories.” Those shows included a performance at Rye’s Baha, and Lang says he’s looking forward to returning to the Peninsula for the Mornington festival. “I feel really grateful that there is an audience for what I do, because you exist in a void if no one’s paying any attention to what you’re doing. “Music has been a very powerful thing in my life and it’s given me a great feeling of solace and community. That’s been something I’ve been able to cling to in moments in my life, so if you can be a part of that for someone else, that’s a great thing that shouldn’t be undervalued.” Catch Jeff Lang at the Mornington Food, Wine and Performing Arts Festival on Sunday, October 21. The festival kicks off at 11am and runs through to 5pm with a host of bands (including Blackwater Riff, Thunder Road, Holycow, The Warrains, and Lucky), Hip Cat Circus workshops, Red House Native American and Percussion Club performances, Peninsula Poets’ Soapbox Poetry, Marshere School Of Dance and Jive Dance displays – and of course the fabulous food and wine that has made the festival such a success over the past 17 years. From domestic Aussie cricketer, to breakfast radio host, to part time television newsreader, to North Melbourne Football Club President, to Footy Show host, to Triple M drivetime radio and footy broadcast host, James Brayshaw has managed to squeeze a hell of a lot into his schedule. Ahead of his MC duties at the upcoming Beers By The Bar Festival, PEARL spoke with the man in question from his home in Flinders, right here on the Peninsula. PEARL: James, you’re a Peninsula local living in Flinders? BRAYSHAW: Yeah, we’ve been here for nearly 3 years, but owned the place for about five and half. PEARL: You work predominantly in the city and interstate with your media career, making it quite a commute. You must be really looking forward to the Peninsula link bypass? BRAYSHAW: Yes! (laughs) Enormously! Not to mention, the end of the road works in general. I said to someone the other day, “Victoria is the road works capital, and the Peninsula is the epicentre!” PEARL: Do you get out to many places round the area often? BRAYSHAW: Well I don’t get a great deal of time unfortunately, but with my wife involved in the horse community down here and the kids at a local primary school, they’re pretty active about the place. From October to December, we’ll usually time to get out and about to some of the wineries and cafes.

DIA DE LOS MUETOS

PEARL: In 2006 you became cohost of the AFL Footy Show, taking over from Eddie McGuire, and working with Garry Lyon and Sam Newman. To watch you all now, it seems like you’re all pretty close, on and off air? BRAYSHAW: Yeah, for sure. I just get along really well with them all… all of the guys, and it just makes the job that much easier. I’ve been lucky, I’ve had that now for the last 7 years with Sam, Crawf, Bill, Gaz. They’re all really good friends, as well as the background staff that haven’t changed and, really from day one, they’ve all been rippers. PEARL: You’re also cohost of the hugely popular Triple M drive show The Rush Hour, with Billy Brownless and have in some way have occupied a radio slot since 1998, on SAFM? BRAYSHAW: Yeah, earlier than that too. In the early 90s I used to do sport in the breakfast show while I was playing cricket actually. It shows how much things have changed, I would drive to the station, work for an hour and half, and then I’d go to the ground and play for South Australia. That was my start in radio. PEARL: What is it about radio that is so enticing? BRAYSHAW: It’s a very relaxed format, good fun and not a great deal of work to prepare. The thing I love about it is it’s local, we talk about Melbourne things with Melbourne people and Bill, as I mentioned, is a ripper. He’s just a joy to do the show with each day and it’s probably one of the few work things over my 25 years that I genuinely look forward to doing. I walk in each day with a smile on the face. PEARL: You’re in charge of MC duties for the upcoming Beers By The Bay Festival, coming to Mornington in

November. What drew you to the offer? BRAYSHAW: Well, the invitation came through, I looked at the date and usually after a long season I don’t want to speak to anyone in November. But after I said that to my wife, she turned around and asked, “Well, why not?” and I thought, “That’s a good question.” I mean, it’s a ripper initiative, it’s down where we live, involves local business and really great people that make great product. It’s not some big corporate thing in Sydney, it’s some Peninsula people that are trying to fire up a really cool initiative. I’m really looking forward to it. I hope everyone gets down and has a great time. James Brayshaw will MC the Beers By The Bay Festival, coming to Mornington Racecourse on November 17. The day will feature beer & wine from around Victoria, fine cuisine and live music from Ash Grunwald, Toot Toot Toots, Ali E, Marty Nelson-Williams and more. For tickets and further info, head to www.beersbythebay.com.au SIMON IMREI

The Peninsula’s favourite Mexican restaurant and music bar, Baha Tacos, will be celebrating the lives of loved ones lost in the beautiful tradition of Mexico’s Dia De Los Muertos, over the first week of November. Every year on November 1 in Mexico, the people erect colourful, elaborate altars to celebrate their friends and family members who have died and to welcome them back home for a visit. Far from being a sad occasion, it is intended more as a celebration than a memorial of grief. Dia de los Muertos is an opportunity for everybody to remember the great times, the funny times, even the embarrassing times. It’s a true celebration of life, and it honours the person who has passed in the way they deserve to be honoured - with a sense of humour, respect and love. It’s an extraordinary tradition, a beautiful idea, and the guys at Baha are really proud to share it with the people of the Peninsula. STAR-STUDDED JUDGING @ PENINSULA SHORT FILM FEST Wilfred creator Adam Zwar and actors Lachy Hulme and Firass Dirani are among a star-studded judging panel for next month’s Peninsula Short Film Festival. Zwar, Hulme and Dirani will be joined by actor, musician and TV presenter David Reyne, comedian and broadcaster Steve Vizard and Mix FM’s Jane Hall (pictured left) for the second annual festival. It’s a panel with vast experience, according to festival director Steve Bastoni. “This year’s panel has solid credentials, not only in acting roles but in creating and producing films and TV shows,” Bastoni says. With Jason Gann, Zwar created the cult hit Wilfred in 2007. More recently he created and starred in the comedy Lowdown as a

MISSY BRINGS SOME RAZZLE DAZZLE BACK HOME November will see Missy Higgins return to the homeland for a series of concerts with special guests Gurrumul and Emma Louise.

Five years have passed since the Australian songstress’ last album was released, making The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle’s debut at # 1 in Australia all the sweeter for Higgins, who was both surprised and grateful to still have a place within Australian listeners’ hearts. “I really had no idea how I would be received after being away for so long, or how my new sound would be received. I have to say it’s been incredibly re-affirming to realise that you can follow your heart and wait until it’s the right time - as long as what you do inspires you, the rest will follow.” Indeed, although the new album is distinctly recognizable at ‘Missy Higgins’, the acoustic folk sound that characterized Higgins’ previous albums The Sound of White and On a Clear Night has been replaced by an almost vintage disco vibe. The songstress notes that although she had no intention of making the record sound like anything in particular, the ‘earnest singer-songwriter thing’ was beginning to ‘bore’ her, prompting an exploration into new musical territory.

PHOTOGRAPHER HEIDI ROSS

“I felt I’d done that, and I wanted to explore different sounds, more synths and more backing vocals…as time went by I realised that I was getting in to a lot of pop music that was multi-layered and interesting, it made you feel good but was also intelligent song-crafting.” The shift in Missy Higgins’ style can also be attributed to the singer’s ever evolving relationship with music. Looking over her previous work, it is difficult to overlook the emotionally charged lyrics driving Higgins’ music, indicative of the singer’s commitment to throwing herself into her work with an intense passion. When reflecting on her delicate relationship with music over the years, Higgins notes the

detrimental affect that diving ‘head first’ into a record deal had upon her musical self-expression.

“It was like the line of communication had been snapped and I didn’t know how to repair it. Over time I rediscovered music and writing just for myself, and now I really have this newfound appreciation for what I do. I’m so grateful. I also realise now how fragile creativity is, you have to nurture it and put it absolutely amongst the highest of priorities in your life.” When discussing performing in regional areas of Australia, Missy Higgins affirms her love for Queenscliff in particular, where the trees and chilled-out vibes create an ideal setting for the artist to play a gig in. Performing the Queenscliff Music Festival as part of her National Tour, Higgins can’t wait to show her Nashville-based band the Australian country. In addition to hearing a touch of Nashville, punters can also look forward to catching Australian artists Gurrumul and Emma Louise on The Razzle Dazzle Summer Tour. Gurrumul’s highly emotive voice has struck a deep chord with audiences across the globe, while Australian audiences were captivated by a duet between Higgins and Gurrumul at the 2011 ARIA Awards. Similarly, Brisbane based indie songstress Emma Louise has benefited from a wave of success following the release of her single Jungle from her debut EP Full Hearts and Empty Rooms. Higgins expressed excitement at the prospect of performing with both artists, hinting at another possible collaboration with Gurrumul while also noting that she is glad to perform alongside young female singer-songwriters like her former-self, who benefited from supporting a host of top Australian bands in her formative years. The Razzle Dazzle Summer Tour will be hitting up the Queensclliff Music Festival on Sunday November 25 and the Melbourne Palais Theatre on Tuesday December 4. Missy Higgins’ new album, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, is available for purchase now. MATILDA HEGGIE

EMMYLOU HARRIS

Harris don’t make it Down Under too often. I’ve been here in America for the 11th annual Americana Music Awards and festival and have now begun a five-week tour of the nation. Watching and playing this kind of music in the US reminds me how far we have to go to elevate the quality and reputation of country music back home, but the warm reception that I and the other Aussies I’ve performed with over here have received makes me think that we could be on the right track. In America, country music is not simply the domain of the middle-aged and elderly, but rather a vibrant and growing movement with fans of all ages. The ‘Americana’ scene, in particular, is thrilling to be part of – and it’s exciting to hope that something similar may develop in Australia. Of course, if we are to make progress here and broaden country music’s appeal, our radio announcers and festival programmers will need to move beyond the established mainstream names and encourage new talent. I was glad to see that our Red Hill Country Music Festival has included Kristy Cox in its line-up – she’s a young bluegrass singer who’s regularly made the pilgrimage to Nashville and has a strong appreciation for the Americana (or ‘alt-country’) genre. She joins Paul Costa (pictured left) and a group of essentially mainstream names on the bill for the festival, which takes place on January 13 next year – just a week or so before Tamworth. I’ll bring you more on that in the coming editions. In other local news, the previously heralded

This month I’m dialling in my column from Memphis, Tennessee – a town where it’s definitely hip to be country (though even more hip to be blues). Tonight I got to see a hero of mine perform for two hours in a public park to about 2000 locals – each of whom had paid just $25 to see this living legend in action. I’m speaking of Emmylou Harris (pictured right) – not just one of country music’s most iconic voices but one of the few direct links left (alongside Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson) to the outlaw country and country-rock scenes of the 1970s. Emmylou is 65 now but still tours occasionally. She’ll be in Australia later this year to promote her new Hard Bargain album, and I recommend you grab your tickets to her November 10 show at The Palais as soon as possible. They’ll cost you more than $25, but folks like Emmylou

(in this column, at least) Weeping Willows have just released their first single Hold On – available now on iTunes. I must confess to a conflict of interest here because I helped them out a little with the accompanying video (which keen Utubers are welcome to check out). Expect an album launch in December, with hopefully more Peninsula dates to follow. Next month I’ll be dialling in from New York City, but until then keep seeking out great country music on the Peninsula and beyond! Lachlan Bryan is primarily a singersongwriter, with his debut album Shadow Of The Gun out now through Core/Sony. He also moonlights as a gifted observer and music journalist, writing monthly for PEARL Magazine on all things folk/country/ bluegrass. If you’ve got a new release, upcoming show or you’d like to get in touch with Lachlan, drop him a line at countryfolk@pearlmag.com.au LACHLAN BRYAN

NEW HOME FOR BIG WIGS IN SORRENTO

The Mornington Peninsula Wig Library, established at Peninsula Private Hospital in 2008, has moved to 110 Cranbourne Rd, Frankston, in the Healthscope building. From a small start with a few wigs and scarfs and very enthusiastic volunteers recruited from PPH, the Wig Library has grown. Now with an impressive array of more than 700 wigs and dozens of hats, scarfs and assorted items, the need to expand the Wig Library’s home became increasingly evident. Volunteers keep the library supplied with sleep caps, quilted scarfs (padded for comfort) and assorted turbans and knitted hats. In the past five years PPH has promoted the Wig Library as a community service to women who have lost their hair during chemotherapy. This service is provided for women who live on or are being treated on the Mornington Peninsula. The Wig Library receives generous sponsorship from various companies and groups. Recent fundraisers have been conducted by Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, The Beehive at Mornington Cup and the Sorrento–Portsea RSL where, on Monday, October 1, ladies attending the Mini Field of Women charity lunch were greeted with a glass of champers – pink, of course. The Wig Library has 17 volunteers and has recently provided information and resources to Cabrini Brighton,

Since 2006, Pantene Beautiful Lengths in North America has received an incredible 303,998 ponytails. With enough hair to create 24,000 real wigs, Pantene has helped to transform the lives of thousands of women across the US. Now, the company wants to support the thousands of women with cancer in Australia and New Zealand. Pantene is on a mission to support women with cancer by providing free real-hair wigs to women who have lost their locks through treatment. Together with Look Good...Feel Better, the company is asking women to skip their next salon trim, grow their hair a little longer and stronger and pledge their ponytails to the Beautiful Lengths program. BLUES Report with PATRICK ELLIGET

SAFARI MOTEL: AN EMERGING BLUES PROJECT

Any band is only as strong as the sum of its parts and the result of extensive stylistic experimentation and sheer hard work by the collective individuals. Safari Motel, an exciting new player in the local blues scene, is a perfect example, being the culmination of several early diverse incarnations. These include the well-known The Dirty Boogie Band, prominent Melbourne alternative rock outfit Gretchen Lewis, and Hatch It Harry, a regular player in Melbourne’s funk and soul scene. Nichole Nehemia heads up this new combination on vocals, along with fellow Dirty Boogie Band member Rob Moe on sax. Nehemia’s resume includes backing the likes of Noel Mendoza and the legendary Billy Thorpe. Recently I had the pleasure of hearing her sing at a Blues Mountain Trio gig and, along with the rest of crowd, was blown away by a rich, soulful and very powerful voice that was born to sing the blues. Moe‘s background is as an award-winning Conservatory of Music graduate and touring band member with such acts as Howard Morrison and Thunder Road (The Bruce Springsteen Experience). Adding an international flavour to the band is Saif Quadir, who made a name for himself as one of Bangladesh’s premier guitarists, touring internationally with funk units Groove Trap and Rainbow. On keyboards is the accomplished Annette Hobba who, with bass guitarist Jason Nehill, was involved in founding Gretchin Lewis and Hatch It Harry. Nehill has built a strong following as a result of his unique, funky bass lines and has gigged and recorded with international blues guitarist Jarrah Thompson. Rounding out the band is drummer Alf Mott, who also plays with Moe and Nehemia in DBB. Mott has backed such artists as James Reyne and is known for his methodically tight sense of timing.

Having been described as a soul, blues and funk-oriented outfit, Safari Motel are currently rehearsing for their debut gig at B’Artiste in Frankston on November 30. I have no doubt this new combination, with such a strong individual pedigree, will become a serious force within the blues scene in the years ahead. LOCAL BLUES LOVERS UNITE

The Peninsula has long played host to some world-class blues musicians and songwriters. For the most part, it’s been in fleeting stopovers on tour or at occasional residencies surrounding a festival appearance over in Queenscliff or further down the coast. In 2013, however, Peninsula residents will be treated to 12 premier blues acts, on the one stage, on the same day for the inaugural Blues At The Briars Festival. The only current live blues event held in our area, the festival boasts a stellar line-up including Blues Deluxe, Fiona Boyes, Claude Hay, Marisa Quigley and Blues Mountain, not to mention industry stalwarts Geoff Achison, Lloyd Spiegel, Rob Pappalardo and headliner Jimi Hocking. In addition to the 11 hours of music, the day will feature an array of local Peninsula beer, wine and culinary offerings, all aiming to establish an annual event to showcase fine Australian blues, as well as the beauty and diversity of the Peninsula to those traveling from outside the area. So, grab your picnic blanket, and get set to head down in February for an unforgettable day of music, set against the backdrop of the picturesque Briars Homestead. The Blues At The Briars Festival will take place on February 2, 2013, at The Briars Homestead, Nepean Highway, Mornington. Tickets are available through the website, at www.bluesatthebriars.com, with a discounted family ticket package on offer as well. SIMON IMREI

With lopez ben Horns up and balls out, folks, it’s time again to glare into the looking glass to see what’s on the horizon for the heavier side of music. Up ahead, we have lots of cool and exciting things to giggle like schoolgirls over, so let’s dive right in.

Once upon a time in the mysterious land of Ireland, Hat Fitz, an Australian veteran of the blues scene, heard the powerful vocals of Irish singer Cara Robinson. Today, Hat Fitz and Cara are a husband-and-wife duo with their blues and roots music becoming increasingly popular across the globe. PEARL spoke with Cara about the album, forthcoming tour and working with Hat Fitz. The pair are about to embark on an Australian tour, heading around the country in support of their recently released album Wiley Ways. The record is a collection of diverse and lyrically emotive ideas, with the title track telling of being a child and some of the experiences Robinson had, such as meeting a gypsy. “I was always told not to go into the long grass, then one day as a child I got lost and bumped into a gypsy,” Robinson says. “I was fascinated with the idea of simple living in the countryside and escaping from society.” As a husband and wife creating music together, it’d be fair to assume the pair spend all their time playing drums and washboards and writing lyrics, but that’s not entirely true, according to Robinson. They’re both just like the rest of us, juggling work, family and a household. “It can be quite difficult when you have kids and there’s a life including washing and cleaning,” she says. “That’s another job on top of everything.” When you witness how in sync Hat Fitz and Cara are when they perform, with the charisma, energy and joy they project, it is hard to believe that the very first time they played live together was a complete disaster. “I thought it was awful! He was great

but then the old saying goes you’re only as good as your weakest player and I was the weakest link of the whole gig, but we went from there and got stronger and better.” Getting behind the drum kit and learning to play was a challenge that Robinson overcame in starting the band with Hat Fitz. In their gospeltinged song Power, Robinson is an absolute powerhouse on the drums, proving her talent for percussion matches her strong vocals. It’s a talent that has stemmed from experience, having sung and been drawn to music since childhood. “I’d get on the school bus and make choirs and force them to do harmonies all the way to school,” she laughs. “It was something I just did naturally and kept doing.” Though the passion has always been present, Robinson has given herself to the world of office work along her journey. “I tried to play the secretarial and office job role to work in that world, but I became somebody that I didn’t like,” she says. “Once I got back to music and I joined the band, I was into the music world again and I breathed a sigh of relief. It became more apparent to me than ever that music is my calling.” Luckily for the listening public – as well as Hat Fitz – Robinson left the office and returned to music, with the result being offbeat and engaging music, rich with a vast array of instruments and soulful vocals. Hat Fitz and Cara perform at Baha in Rye as part of their Australian tour on October 20. For tickets, visit www.bahatacos.com.au/#music or phone Baha on 5985 2077. JESSICA MILLS

A hotly anticipated number, Wednesday 13 (see what I did there?), will be tearing up the Espy Hotel on October 27. Tickets thru www.oztix.com.au. The next day (October 28), you can get your head-banging needs fulfilled at the Whiplash Festival, coming to the HiFi Bar! A nice little assortment of metal bands will be rupturing eardrums and jarring necks, including Denmark’s Mnemic, Brazilian underground death metal band Unearthly, Australia’s very own Dawn Heist, as well as Lychmada, Devour The Martyr, Katabasis, Scar The Surface, Kunvuk, Prescient and many more. Get your tickets at www.thehifi. com.au. Bastardfest is coming to its usual haunt, the Espy Hotel, on November 5. If you want in, better head on down to www.oztix.com. au to grab a place. See you there, bastards and bastard fans! A bit further ahead still but selling incredibly fast is the glorious pillaging return of Alestorm to our shores, and boy, do they have a treat for us! They will be shooting a live DVD here in Melbourne when they hit the HiFi Bar on January 18. Great Neptune’s man-nipples, if you want in on this you had better set the sails to full and go to the HiFi website. In further exciting news, there’s been a whole batch of updates to the Soundwave lineup. The most recent addition is Killswitch Engage, but there are, of course, a metric bucketload of other acts worth noting. Those who don’t have tickets, I am sorry to report, have officially missed out. However, with a limited number of new tickets released interstate, you never know. So keep checking www.soundwavefestival.com.au as often as possible. So there we have it, lots of goodies to look forward to. Our wallets will hate us, the doctors might love us, but at the end of the day if it isn’t that way then it has been a dreary month. TWO PIANOS – TWO MUSIC LEGENDS - ONE NIGHT - TOUR DE FORCE This international hit arrives for one exclusive evening at the Frankston Arts Centre this Melbourne Cup Eve! Tour De Force is the pairing of two of Australia’s most talented musicians to replicate the phenomenon that is Elton John and Billy Joel together on the one stage. The original “Tour De Force” began in 1994 and still continues on to this day with no sign of its popularity waning as Sir Elton John and Billy Joel continue to tour the world together, and in their own separate shows. Elton Jack (Lance Strauss) & BigShot (Jimmy Mann) are undoubtedly this country’s finest exponents of Elton John and Billy Joel as they replicate the sound that is synonymous with both artists. Musically the show has no peer as Lance Strauss and Jimmy Mann are backed by an accomplished band dedicated to providing the Elton John and Billy Joel sound including a sax/flute player. The show starts with both artists on stage in intimate mode playing the classics Your Song & Just The Way You Are before the band joins them and they launch into hits like My Life, Movin Out, I’m Still Standing, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, & all the major hits! The show finishes how it began with just the two artists and two pianos playing Candle In The Wind & Piano Man. The dynamics of the show rise and fall between the power rock songs and beautiful ballads that are recognised the world over. It truly is a captivating concert experience. Book early, as this is one show not to be missed! The Frankston Arts Centre comes alive! Melbourne Cup Eve, Monday 5th November at 8pm. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 9784 1060 or online at www.fac.com.au For more information on this exciting show visit www. tourdeforceshow.com

Rpp is where it’s at Every Thursday night, community radio station RPP FM dedicates an hour and a half to the program Where It’s At! The show is co-hosted by Matt Rippon, a PEARL reviewer and radio aficionado, and Billy Smith, from the Peninsula-based event management team HS Sounds. Coming up to the show’s first birthday, Rippon spoke with PEARL’s Hadyn Levett about life behind the microphone. Rippon’s RPP Thursday night gig started off in the 11.40pm timeslot – or, as he quite rightly calls it, “kind of like the graveyard shift” - and largely came about by chance. “When we went for training, the first week’s intake was actually pretty small; 12 people, maybe. We thought we had some competition, but then next week we were the only two in the class. Everybody had dropped out!” Since then the show has claimed a new prime-time slot and its fan base is growing by the week. Where It’s At! is dedicated to playing live music from throughout Melbourne and the Peninsula, but it also features

interviews from an array of artists from all over Australia. Some go smoothly and some hit a snag every now and then. Their interview with singersongwriter Lanie Lane is a case in point. “Billy asked (Lane) about the single she had done with Jack White, making out it was brand new when actually it was from a year prior,” Rippon recalls. “She wasn’t too happy with that.” When asked how the two came to be a part of the show, Rippon jokes that Smith was a random inclusion. “I don’t know how he ended up on the show, actually. I think I just asked him to come in one week and then he just kept coming back.” Regardless, the two have a knack for radio, enjoying the opportunity to uncover great music as well as having some laughs. “Radio is addictive. With our kind of show, you just get to be a little bit creative with it while enjoying some great tunes. Finding that balance is always fun.” In addition to doing the show each week, Rippon is taking steps towards a career in commercial radio and the

media. “I’m actually doing an internship with a Sydney media company at the moment, and finished up a commercial radio course a couple of weeks ago. That was pretty eye-opening.” His co-host is also busy, managing HS Sounds, an event management team just starting out on the Peninsula. With two successful events so far - Paint It Pink and Mid-Term Jump - only time will tell how far they get. Luckily, as two of RPP FM’s younger presenters, time is on their side. Check out Where It’s At! every Thursday from 7.30pm on RPP FM (98.7FM or 98.3FM). For more info on the show, head to www.rppfm.com. au or www.facebook.com/WIA.RPP. AN ALBUM ON THE WAY FOR REE LIDDELL Singer-songwriter and guitarist Ree Liddell is no stranger to music lovers on the Peninsula, having performed solo, with Mojo Pearls and the hugely popular Holycow. Whether it’s as a vocalist or on a resonator, mandolin or acoustic guitar, Liddell has captivated audiences here and around Australia with her mix of ambient, funky and sometimes quirky blues/jazz performances. As a songwriter, Liddell floats between the sceptical, ironic, satirical, sassy, playful and compassionate, with her unique reflections of life as a musician to appear on her forthcoming debut solo album Over The Moon. The record has taken time to ripen, and now the finishes touches are being laid ahead of a launch tour with some of the

WHO OR WHAT IS TREVOR?

Would you like to join 3,000 people on an island off an island – ChurchHill Island, Phillip Island to be exact – in a ‘trevor appreciation congregation’? Confused? The concept of Trevor is apparently simple; something positive bringing people together. The Trevor festival was hence created – a unique music-loving experience. Acts such as Ash Grunwuld, Ice Davies & Icehouse, The Bamboos and the Pierce Brothers will perform at the January 13 festival, with more acts to be announced. Head to www.whoistrevor.com.au for info.

This year extra space has been added to the already huge camping area to accommodate the punters in comfort. The Pyramid Bar has a full view of the stage; the festival food court will serve delicious fare; and the many market stalls will offer a stack of memorabilia and festival treats. Stolen Moon was formed by Peninsula musicians and longtime friends Chris Davies and Greg Aspinall, out the back of Aspinall’s house, following the demise of their previous outfit, Deadheart. The two had performed and toured around Australia, as well as internationally, playing a gig at the Garoka Sing Sing Festival, in Papua New Guinea, to an audience of 60,000 plus. After a few years passed, the band recruited guitarist Jeff Right and in 2010, along with Chris ‘Huddo’ Hudson on bass, released the band’s self-titled album. This album, along with an accompanying video, will be on sale at the Main Street Mornington Festival on Sunday October 21, with band to be performing - possibly with a special guest appearance by percussionist Brian Hore. Check out Stolen moon at www.reverbnation.com/ stolenmoon, as well as on YouTube. In addition, Davies has also completed two independent albums of his own material, Stillrace and Anxiuos, which will also be on sale on the day.

OKTOBERFEST

MORE THAN JUST BEERS BY THE BAY… The main attraction at Beers By The Bay on November 17 will undoubtedly be beer, but among all the pots and pints on show for the Mornington Peninsula’s craft beer festival will be some quality live music, with one of the country’s most recognisable blues and roots performers taking the stage alongside some awesome local talent. Ash Grunwald has just wrapped up an Australian tour to promote his new album Trouble’s Door. After an engaging Pledgemusic.com fan-funding campaign, Grunwald released and marketed the album himself, and toured to fulfill all the donation incentives he’d promised during his campaign. Now he’s raring to hit the stage at Beers By The Bay. Also on board are The Toot Toot Toots and Ali E, two acts you can see both at the festival and at Baha the night before as part of their Peninsula stopover. Since ’09, the Toot Toot Toots have developed a solid reputation for their country blues sound and their frenetic, hyper-energetic live shows. Releasing their debut album Outlaws earlier this year, the band stands

CATCH THE PENINSULA’S ONLINE CHEF AT BEERS BY THE BAY! In addition to great beer and wine and live music at the Beers By The Bay Festival, Dromana’s own Two Buoys will be one of venues on site, serving up sumptuous food for the festivalgoers. Head chef, Adam Massimo, has received much attention and publicity in recent times, with his newfound online fame on social media site Google+, making it almost a coup for the festival to have him on board. It all began less than 6 months ago, after Massimo had began posting cooking videos on YouTube and his Google+ account. The videos featured his dishes, ingredients he preferred using, his take on traditional recipes and his secrets in preparing authentic Italian food. Having worked for years in different environments, including on high budget luxury yachts, Massimo had a wealth of knowledge and experience with which to draw on in his videos. In a short space of time, following Google’s

monitoring of his online presence, he was contacted and informed that the web giant loved what he was doing and had added him to their exclusive Google ‘list’, opening his videos and page up to thousands of internet users around Australia and globally. Before long, his 2000 Google+ followers turned into 10,000, and now Massimo sits in excess of 1.3 million, making him the most followed Google+ profile in Australia, and 2nd most followed in the world! Massimo remains humble and modest about his whirlwind success, still deciding which way to go and where his next steps will take him. Rest assured, though, he’s definitely destined for bigger things. Catch your opportunity to see him, this November, at Beers By The Bay, working with Two Buoys and their sister restaurant ‘Steam’ on their own stage. Hi PEARL Readers! Over the last 2-3 years there has been a push by the big boys (Coles & Woolworths) to increase their margins by parallel importing some of your favourite international beers. Some of the main ones to watch out for are Corona, Stella, Becks & Peroni. For example, Corona is brewed exclusively in Mexico and then exported directly to Australia under a licence agreement. In some cases the big boys are bypassing the local licensee & buying it cheaper from other countries such as America or Brazil. What this means is the beer spends longer on the ship where the storage & temperature of the beer is not what it should be and, in my opinion, this can affect the quality and the taste of the beer. This summer when you ask for an imported beer – check the labelling to make sure it has been imported direct by the local licensee in Australia. I have some exciting beer news, as well. Rather, something old made new again. The ‘Growler’... (which the big boys can’t sell!) Maybe not quite what you think, a ‘Growler’ is a 64oz (or in our terms almost 2 litre) glass bottle of beer. Used by home & craft breweries since the 19th century, it has now been released to the local retail stores to distribute amber goodness fresh from the keg into the glass bottle to the beer loving people of Australia. Once finished it can be re-filled back in store, providing great value. The bonus with Growlers is that smaller local breweries can now get their product out to the public without having to have a shop front or distributors. Depending on the system being used to fill the growlers, most beers last from 2 -5 days and anywhere up to 30, if kept sealed. My passion for beer has been reignited by the endless possibilities of what I could fill this take home bottle with. I will be spending this summer seeing what amazing beers the local brewers can brew. Nepean Highway Cellars has just received their first Growlers shipment, and will be filling up with fresh brewery beer very shortly! Until next time… cheers! CALENDAR GIRLS ON STAGE & PAGE

SCREENTHEATRE GEMS & FILM

Southern Peninsula Players are putting on a show and have taken off their clothes to promote Tim Firth’s play, Calendar Girls and its namesake calendar. In a bold move paralleling their stage characters, these actresses have stripped bare, or nearly there, to raise funds for leukaemia. Posing semi-nude for the first time in their lives was no small feat, but they handled the assignment with grace and good humour producing a fun and frisky fundraising product.

THE STAGE SET FOR PENINSULA SHORT FILM FESTIVAL The Peninsula Short Film Festival comes to The Village Green in Rosebud on Saturday November 10, offering film-makers some decent prize money if their creation impresses the star-studded celebrity judging panel (see main article on page 8). For those not engulfed in the technical terminology and creative process, it’s a chance for the public to see grass roots Australian film, with some entries originating from the Peninsula itself. The inaugural event reached capacity within 20mins of doors opening, setting the scene for a bigger and better festival this November. The evening will commence at 5pm, with live music from local lad, Nowra frontman Paul Barry and Terry Serio, who’ll be playing tracks off his new record, Who’s To Cry. Also performing and adding to the already well boulstered celebrity stocks, is former AFL footballer - come musician and stage actor - Russel Robertson. Robertson is currently working with festival director Steve Bastoni in Barassi - The Stage Show and will making the trip down to perform exclusively for festivalgoers. The films screen from sunset onwards, with food and drinks to accompany the evenings proceedings. Whether you’re a budding film-critic or you’re just looking for a night out, make sure you head down and appreciate some talented artists and filmmakers. Find out more at www.peninsulashortfilmfestival.com.au.

Calendar Girls, the play, follows the lives of several middle-aged Yorkshire women at Rylstone Institute and the tragic circumstance that led them to abandon their clothes. Opening on Thursday, November 8 at Rosebud Memorial Hall, Calendar Girls runs through November 18. Tickets for shows, order forms for calendars and further details on shows are available online at www. spptheatre.org or by ringing 5982 2777 or 5976 4494. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS PROUDLY PRESENTED BY

ROSEBUD CINEMAS FILM FESTIVAL

FROM ROMANIA WITH LOVE

Integration of Roma, aka gypsy children, into mainstream schools in an attempt to provide equal opportunity and break the cycle of poverty was the 2006 goal of Romanian and EU government bodies. Illuminating film, Our School follows this journey over five years showing mixed results and will screen as part of antipoverty week (www.antipovertyweek.org.au) courtesy of the Mornington Peninsula Shire. The screening will take place at their Mornington offices on Tuesday, October 16 from 6:30 to 8:45. For bookings, phone 5950 1685 or email spcd.admin@mornpen.vic.gov.au.

The 14th Rosebud Cinemas Film Festival kicks off on November 9, running right through until the 11th, offering a weekend of foreign language, arthouse and mainstream film to cinema-lovers and casual viewers alike. With a list of films yet to be released on offer, the opening night will begin at 6pm and feature live music, wine and entertainment before the screening, with plenty of fun, food and film for the whole family throughout the weekend. Film Festival breakfasts are also available from the Rosebud Hotel, as an option for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Starting from $15 per person, there are also some great package deals available with your weekend’s tickets. Find out more at www.peninsulacinemas.com.au, and for bookings phone 5981 2555.

MAN VS BOOK AT SPAC

With the two most recent shows at The Southern Peninsula Arts Centre being Kapow and their hugely successful Ladies Night, you wouldn’t be far off the mark thinking the centre chooses some pretty quirky and out there performances, to take place within their walls. Following on from that tradition, Josh Earl Vs Children’s Birthday Cake Book is an adults only comedy covering swimming pools, race cars, steam trains, robots and ‘The Australian Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book.’ After briefly mentioning the particular piece of culinary literature in a 2008 show, Tassie born comedian Josh Earl vowed to return with a performance purely crafted in its honour, such was the outstanding crowd reaction. A seasoned comedian both solo and with ‘The Renegades of Folk’, Earl is not to be missed! Josh Earl Vs Children’s Birthday Cake Book comes to SPAC on Sat November 10 from 8pm. Tickets are $24 ($20 concession) and available through the website at www.rsc.vic.edu.au

TOP 10 GUARANTEED HANGOVER CURES According to a random sample Peninsula of folk…

Number 10 – Banana Milkshake “A top mix of ‘healthy-as’ banana, and completely unhealthy ice-cream! Milk will line your stomach, so if you forgot to down one before your night out, better late than never!” Jase, Point Leo

tips & tricks to recover!

LASHINGS OF COFFEE, CAKE & COMFORT FOOD AT LEAF & BEAN Leaf and Bean is the brand new incarnation of ‘Main St Deli’ and whether you knew it before or not, make sure you get straight down there to try the best coffee in Mornington! The house blend is Jasper’s Blend No.10, plus regular guest bean special releases, and can be enjoyed on the move, or in one of their large comfy leather sofas, huddled around the fireplace. With euro-eclectic décor, Leaf & Bean also caters for patrons looking for something a little bit different with their latte, with games tables fit for chess, backgammon or even snakes and ladders! Added to the ambience is some cool gentle jazzy tunes, wafting through the airwaves, and the convenience of ‘Free Wi-Fi’, which pair nicely with the selection of delicious cakes and fab pizzas. No wonder this place is known for “coffee, cake and comfort food!” Find Leaf & Bean in Main St, Mornington, next to Subway. They’re open from 8-30am-6:30pm, every day. Phone them on 5975 2403.

LEAF & BEAN

Number 09 – Sleep “Sleep is all you need. I get home, stumble into bed and don’t wake up till I feel ok. Sounds stupid, but hibernate. Trust me.” Dylan, Rye Number 08 – Food… The Night Before “Whenever I get home, if I haven’t already stopped at Vic’s in Frankston or Towerhill Maccas, I usually try and knock up something. Those frozen dim sims or random things in the freezer usually go alright. Then I wake up the morning, and it’s all soaked up. Brilliant.” Tim, Hastings Number 07 – Chocolate “Wake yourself up with a sugar high. A lotta people say, the morning after a night out is when you need food in the belly. I say grab a box of Cadbury favourites, and get to know your couch and Sunday afternoon television.” Kelly, Red Hill Number 06 – Vitamins, Vitamins, Vitamins “Anything you can find with any alleged natural health benefit, get into it. Vitamin C, Echinacea, Berocca, all of it. Fire it into ya!” Will, Frankston Number 05 – Coconut Water “Even saying the word ‘coconut’ the morning after will surely lift the spirits! But seriously though, coconut water. Low sugar and carbs, and almost fat free!” Liana, Sorrento Number 04 – Panadol & Water “A couple of panadol will thin the blood nicely, then just throw the water down. You’ll be right as rain the next morning.” Hailey, Somerville

LEAF & BEAN LEAF & BEAN

Number 03 – Stay In Bed… for a little bit of… “Sex. Simple as that. Probably followed by a coffee and another round. (laughs)” Louise, Mornington Number 02 – More alcohol! “When all else fails, hair of the dog! I read on the net that there’s a cocktail that’s awesome for hangovers. Fill a glass with 1/3 Tequila, 1/3 Anise and 1/3 Fernet. That’ll get the hairs standin’ up!” Brett, Chelsea Number 01 – GREASE lightning “Best hangover cure is the greasiest, most disgusting array of breakfast foods you can think of. A massive burger, or some salty chips or the best thing is a full cooked breakfast. Eggs, bacon, hash browns, cooked tomato, mushies, snags, the lot. If you don’t have a coronary, you’ll start feeling better!” Scott, Carrum Downs

Spring has sprung! Festivals and events are popping up like wildflowers. Nature’s artwork is on display at open gardens. The Royal Botanic Garden, Cranbourne is complete. Its late October opening will feature environmental poetry, gardening workshops, live music and entertainers. Mornington Main Street Festival will be bigger than ever with bands, storytelling, theatre groups, soapbox poetry, cultural demonstrations, dance groups and roving entertainment. Acting and improvisation workshops are flourishing, as are local theatre and dance groups. The galleries are going gangbusters, Peninsula Studio Trail artists are opening their doors, school art shows are on and the Peninsula Short Film Festival is coming in November. SOLE OF DANCE: CAPEZIO CAPTIVATING CAPOEIRA

Capoeira is a cultural art form originating in Brazil five centuries ago. Combining music, dance, and martial arts, it’s a game played between two competitors, as well as a form of artistic selfexpression. Better yet, it’s a lot of fun. Capoeira Brazil runs classes in Mornington’s Currawong Community Hall Tuesdays 6 to 7:30 pm and at Balnarring Community Hall Wednesdays 5:30 to 6:30pm. It’s $10/session. Contact Fogo: 0400 199 018 or email: mornington_capoeira@hotmail.com.

Capezio has been handcrafting dance shoes for 125 years. Now the brand has expanded into its very own premises in Mornington such is the demand for the Capezio brand in Australia and New Zealand. Salvatore Capezio, a 17- year boy transplanted from a hilltop village in the heart of Italy to bustling New York City started a phenomenon with his dream to produce the best dance shoes imaginable. This inventive young man opened up shop catering to the needs of the New York Metropolitan Opera. His passion for meeting the particular demands of professional dancers and his personal relationship with those dancers catapulted his business to the top. His reputation for craftsmanship was second to none and that reputation remains. Capezio continues to be innovative in designing new technological advances in dance footwear and apparel. Today, Capezio supplies the shoes and dance gear for some of the biggest names in show business. If So You Think You Can Dance is on your radar, Capezio should be on your feet. From Broadway to the Bolshoi, Capezio can be seen dancing across stage and screen. To see the new premises visit 12-14 Milgate Drive, Mornington Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5pm and Saturday 10 am to 3pm. Ring 5975 0266 or email: shop@capezio.com. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

ON A GRAND SCALE

Away with Fairies by Christopher Langton is a monumental sculpture of three fantasy avatars installed on the grounds of the McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park, Langwarrin in early October as part of the McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award for outdoor sculpture. 36 scupltors are vying for the coveted $100,000 biennial prize, one of Australia’s richest and most important acquisitive outdoor sculpture awards. The stakes are high and the sculptures are accordingly impressive. The winner will be announced on Sunday, November 18 at 3pm at McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park, 390 Mc Clelland Drive, Langwarrin. www.mclellandgallery.com or 9789 1671.

The River of 1,000 Bowls formed part of Sorrento’s Festival of Arts & Heritage in early October. The bowls were sold for $20 each raising funds for Peninsula Headspace.

ZINE SCENE HITS FRANKSTON

Zines voice the unsung and underrepresented artists and writers in society. Raw, uncensored, unabridged and usually made by hand, these cut and paste photocopied magazines showcase hand drawn art work, vox pop, poetry, opinion, comic art generally untouched by other publications. All-inclusive and often divisive, zines are an interesting thumbnail of society’s unspoken thoughts. Tasha Nicholls has started a group at the Frankston Library dedicated to this unique genre and is hoping ‘A Zine Thing’ will catch on. If it sounds interesting, attend their first meeting on Saturday, Nov. 10th from 1 – 3pm in the Long Room at Frankston Library. Bookings 9784 1020. MERYL OF MANY TALENTS Cool, calm and self-composed, one would never guess that behind that easy smile and soft- spoken charm is tremendous talent. Meryl Leppard is a singer, songwriter, musician, storyteller, and performance poet. She does it all with exceptional aplomb and humble grace. Five albums now under her belt, the singing, piano playing and song writing talents are obvious. Additionally, Leppard’s ability to perform a poem, deliver a monologue or spin an original yarn is, in a word, arresting. There is something totally captivating in her performances and critics across the five continents in which she has performed agree. She began writing songs in childhood and spent many years performing them. However, it was when she wrote and starred in her first one woman play, “Mr. Walker and I,” that all of her talents came together. Collaborating with Sydney director, Melina Henderson taught Leppard the craft of constructing a cohesive piece of theatre from the stories within her lyrics. Meryl played piano, sang, delivered spoken word poetry and storytelling monologues all in the one show. “I’m a storyteller at the piano. Storytelling is in my bones,” she explains having come from a long line of storytellers and musicians. During her last three years in New York, Leppard wrote several songs for Donna Moore’s highly successful off-Broadway comedy, ‘Cougar: The Musical’ as well

as writing, composing and musical directing two of her own musicals with book writer Angela Gant, entitled “The Gods of New York” and “Three Dames Make a Queen”. This year she’s been recording a CD singing the songs of phenomenal pianist and songwriter, Scott A. Walker, an Australian ABC recording artist. She also recently wrote twelve songs for New Yorker, David Vernon, while working with her long time arranger and orchestrator, Guy Mc Ewan. That album is still in postproduction in NYC and will be released next year. She’s currently performing with brilliant Brazilian bass player, Jorge Albuquerque. They have started recording a new CD of her original songs. Having spent the majority of her performing career in and around Sydney and New York, with some years in London and Melbourne too, Leppard now returns to settle on the Mornington Peninsula, but to gigs in Sydney and Melbourne or wherever work calls. She shares her expertise on the Peninsula teaching singing and coaching performance and public speaking skills. Experience the marvellous Meryl Leppard in person at the Main Street Mornington Festival Sunday, October 21st on the Beleura House Stage from 2:45 to 3:20 pm or get a glimpse into her professional world on her website at: http://www.merylleppard.com. COME AND SEE THE SPRING THING

Following a successful Youth Muso Night, held earlier this year, local Peninsula Youth are set to benefit from another innovative initiative; a visual and performing arts project based again out of the Balnarring Hall, called The Spring Thing. The project will aim to foster local community engagement activities for young people and provide an opportunity to communicate positive mental health through the arts. Run by the Balnarring Village Common community group, and supported by Mornington Peninsula Shire, Freeza, Headspace and other local businesses and artists, the initiative will be youth led, targeted towards 14-17yr olds and aim to help those involved gain a real sense of ownership in the planning, implementation and eventual coordination of events. On September 21, Mornington Peninsula Shire Cultural Planner, Andrea Ebsworth, presented The Balnarring Village Common with a $5,000 Community Partnerships Grant at the Balnarring Hall (pictured), set to fund artist-run workshops to produce large backdrops to use in the hall during events, as well as a second Youth Muso Night and Visual Arts event where the backdrop is to be unveiled. The Spring Thing Artist workshops are to be held on October 14 and 21, with the second Youth Muso Night slated for November 17. BATTLE OF THE BANDS ROUND #1

WHAT THE YOUTH THOUGHT? With a large crowd on hand to lend their support, IMPAkT FreeZa’s Battle Of The Bands was a complete success. At least it was in the eyes of The City At Night, the overall winners chosen by the judges, earning their win

after a brilliant performance given in front of a somewhat ‘rowdy’ crowd. The losing band, Bio State, still gave an amazing performance and I enjoyed every minute, as with all the bands, but in my opinion the right decision was made. It was a bit hard for the security guards to control the overly excited audience, but thankfully no performances were interrupted. Despite the odd sceptic, the rule of ‘no alcohol, drugs, smoking or pass outs’ didn’t ruin anybody’s night, with the crowd being largely well behaved and just enjoying the music. It was an amazing night to witness with full stage lighting, as well as great sound quality and presentating and I look forward to the next round of the battle. 9/10 for presentation and execution!

‘SMART GENERATION’ PHOTO COMP

MPYS and Communities That Care are running a photo competition, open to all young people on the Peninsula (12-18yrs), as part of a campaign to think before you start drinking. The competition theme is ‘Smart Choice – Alternatives To Drinking Alcohol’, with great prizes on offer and all entries will be displayed at the Oakhill Gallery, Mornington in December. The winners will be featured in PEARL as well, so enter now! For more details, head to www.mpys.com.au/photocomp or call 5950 1642.

MICHAEL FIVET, IMPAKT FREEZA COMMITTEE

WHAT WE THOUGHT? The winners of the recently held Mornington Peninsula Battle Of The Bands – five-piece metalcore band The City At Night – are now set to compete in the Southern Metropolitan Regionals, in November, after winning first prize at the event. Run by Impakt Freeza on September 21, at the Somerville Mechanics Hall, the band were stoked to win first place. “The reaction and support we got from the crowd was amazing for our first gig,” guitarist Pat Kearney said. “We are very much looking forward to playing the next round!” Runners up for the night were Midway to Monaco, in second place, and We The Forsaken in third, with Mornington metal band BioState also competing. For the first time, IMPAkT FreeZa also showcased a headliner – Asleep At Last – who took the stage during the judges deliberation, before another local band, Hemera, topped the night off.

Even with a last minute venue change, the gig didn’t seem to be adversely affected. “The beauty of social media is we can get the message out quickly, and tell everybody about the change,” James Oakley of IMPAkT FreeZa said.

The Dandenong FreeZa committee will host the next round of the comp at ‘The Castle’ on November 9. It’s sure to be yet another night of fun, affordable, drug, smoke and alcohol free entertainment for young people. ALIYAH STOTYN

AN UPDATE ON KAEDEN

Last month we heard all about Kaeden Stevenson, the young man who’s skating beyond his years, and making a big impression in the local scene. Here’s an update from his dad, Spencer…

GIVE SO THAT THEY MAY SURF Mornington Peninsula surfer Marty Brown is no stranger to helping others; as a firefighter, it’s part of the job. As a surfer, though, it took a trip to Papua New Guinea for him to see that he could help make a real difference to the lives of our northern neighbours. Marty has initiated a donation drive across Victoria to collect pre-loved surfboards and equipment to send up to Papua New Guinea. Marty traveled to PNG for the amazing surf, enjoying the opportunity to meet locals who shared his love of surfing, but with the trip came a confronting reality. “Seeing them surfing on splinters, which are makeshift boards made of left-over wood from dug-out canoes, was rough when I knew I had six or seven old surfboards sitting at home in the garage,” he says. It’s a situation that hit home even though he’d already suspected conditions would be difficult. “I always knew it happened, but when you get there the people are surfing on these things with no fins, just a plank of wood. It was amazing. I came away and started thinking about how much they could make use of my old gear, and I knew I had mates who were in same situation who would gladly give their old boards to the Papua New Guineans. That is, if there was a way to get them there. So I decided to do something about it.” Marty made contact with the president of the Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea, Andrew C.

Abel, and shared his idea to get Aussie surfers to donate their old boards and equipment, including leg ropes, booties, wetties, rashies, fins and wax. The SAPNG offered its support to ship the equipment, carry out any ding repairs and re-conditioning and fairly distribute the donations to key surfing areas. “Surfing is still a relatively new sport in PNG,” Mr Abel says, “and the passion is growing among the local villages, but there are no surf shops or money to provide the proper equipment, so Marty’s initiative will be really welcomed.” The Victorian collection will continue until the end of the year and Marty hopes as many local surfers as possible will head into their garages, grab their old surf gear and drop it off at one of the many collection points. Having seen first-hand the lack of money and resources over there, he knows just how much these donations will benefit local communities. “It’s a bit like Bali was in the ‘70s,” he says. “It’s pretty raw, but everyone has always been really friendly. I think there’s a lot of respect there for Australia that was born out of our shared history, particularly during the Second World War.” For more info on where to make donations or how to become a collection point, contact Marty on pngsurfdonation@hotmail.com or visit the Facebook page at www. facebook.com/pages/PNG-SurfDonation/362687857145894

Kaeden loves to shred the bowls of the Mornington Peninsula. Trouble is, being only 8yrs old, sometimes it’s a lonely ride. One of his favourite bowls is the Rye bowl, recently fixed up by the council. Kaeden recently said to me, while shredding on his lonesome, “Wouldn’t it be great to have a Jam or a comp at Rye Bowl, to show people how awesome the skating here is?” So, thanks to Daniel Kirk from the Bowl Riders, the Rye bowl will be rolling with shredders on November 3 from 12, and Kaeden’s little dream can come true! It’s called the Bowl Riders Comp for Kaeden Stevenson - A lil dream and you can check out more on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ events/185148728287798. If anyone wants to help out on the day, give Spencer (Kaeden’s dad) a call on 0437 581 745.

ARTHURS SEAT CHALLENGE

Competitors in next month’s Arthurs Seat Challenge will be doing more than improving their fitness; they’ll be helping tackle the tragedy of the youth road toll. More than 2500 people are expected to walk or run from Rosebud Pier to the top of Arthurs Seat on Sunday November 11, at the same time raising money for Fit To Drive. This community strategy seeks to co-ordinate all available educational road safety resources for Year 11 students in Frankston and the Peninsula. MOSS JAM COMES TO MT ELIZA

SOUTHERN CLASSIC Motorcycle enthusiasts, it’s time to get your motors running and head out on the highway: the Southern Classic Festival is on again. Billed as the biggest ‘clubbie’ historic motorcycle-racing event in Australia, more than 200 competitors will travel from as far away as WA and Queensland to take on Broadford’s many twists and turns in an effort to take home a trophy. The family friendly event offers great spectator access, overnight camping, food and bar facilities, a rock’n’roll band on Saturday night and the opportunity through free pit access to get up close and personal with those great machines of yesteryear.

Motorcycles as diverse as Manx Nortons, Honda 750s, hand-change Harleys and Indians and TZ Yamahas will do battle over an action-packed program of more than 50 races. And if your passion extends to three wheels, the weekend incorporates round two of the Interstate Classic Sidecar Challenge. The 31st Classic, presented by the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria, will be held at the State Motorcycle Complex in Broadford over the weekend of October 20-21. For more details, go to www.hmrav.org or find them on Facebook.

MOSS Jam 2012 will bring ripping bowl skaters from around the country to Mt Eliza’s rad new bowl. Several current world cup-ranked skaters have confirmed and will be busting out hand plants, stale fish airs, smith grinds and lay backs. Expect some of the hot young grommets from Newcastle to show their style, along with the likes of blues musician and rad skater Jimi Hocking. According to MOSS Foundation president, former pro skater and Mt Eliza resident Rob Francis, the bowl is the perfect venue for the event. “It’s a great design, smooth, fast and has the right trannies for a wide range of tricks,” Francis says. “What more can you ask for?” The after-party is a charity auction fundraiser for water projects in Swaziland, in southern East Africa. It’s a cause that is at the core of the MOSS Foundation. The Mt Eliza Cricket Club will host the auction, giving you the chance to pick up some real bargains and skate collectables, including fullsized autographed posters of the likes of Tas Pappas and Lee Ralph at Ramp Riot in the 1980s. Join the MOSS crew for hot food, cold

beer and a few skate tunes to celebrate, and raise some muchneeded money. In its ninth year, the MOSS (Melbourne Old School Skate) Jam will run from 11am to 6pm on Saturday, November 10 at the Mt Eliza Skate Park, Emil Madsen Reserve, Wooralla Drive, Mt Eliza. There will be divisions for skaters aged from five to over

50, as well as the ever-popular Fossil & Grommet (father and son) team competition. The Peninsula Youth Services bus will run on the day and a barbecue will help keep hunger at bay. PEARL: You’re a very talented surfer, especially when it comes to boosting airs. Which do you prefer - punt or pit? WALLACE: I get a big rush off of nailing a big high air I think as much as getting pitted, but ultimately getting pitted then throwing a crazy air! Every air section/transition and every pit is different, which is what I froth about with surfing. It’s never the same situation exactly, so it’s

always fresh to me … even after nearly 30 years! PEARL: You’ve been professional since the age of 16. Tell us about your competition highlight. When, where and who was involved? WALLACE: The Quiksilver Night Airshows in Costa Rica. USA’s best air freaks, a huge stadium, light shining on a perfect four to five-foot beach break and a huge crowd having a beach party. To win in front of the crowd blowing up after every ride was an amazing experience. Every event I’ve won has given me a big short-term stoke and many cool memories, though. I prefer to just compete against myself and push my free-surfing to try new grabs and rotations. PEARL: Rumour is you invented a new air recently. What can you tell us about that? WALLACE: I’ve been tweaking my standard airs a bit, with different grabs and spins. The latest is an alley oop spin with both hands grabbing the heel side rail. Apparently it’s called a ‘flying squirrel’ by snowboarders. I get influenced and inspiration from a lot of the other extreme sports. PEARL: You spent your middle youth honing your skills on the Sunshine Coast. How was growing up there and how did that affect your surfing? WALLACE: I spent my early childhood surfing Pt Leo, then moved to Noosa when I was nine years old. Growing up in Noosa for surfing was all time! Great beach breaks and perfect point breaks, warm water, great for getting a lot of different types of waves and close to Gold Coast where I spent a lot of time with so many of the best talented surfers in the country. PEARL: Lately you have been spotted shredding up the West Coast, The Island and the Peninsula. You surf a lot for a lad who lives almost an hour from the coast? WALLACE: I don’t really have a local surf beach; I go to wherever the surf is best on each given day. I surf on the West Coast on the big swells and Phillip Island and the Peninsula when the conditions and sand bars are right. I probably spend most of my time on the Peninsula, one of the most consistent coastlines in the world for swell. PEARL: Where will Nick Wallace be in 20 years? WALLACE: Hopefully kickin’ it under a palm tree, drinking fresh coconuts, surfing and hanging with friends and family. Until then, I’ll just take my life one day at a time! interviewed by EDDIE WEARNE / SHED NINE

The Mornington Peninsula has long been a mecca for surfers, with some of the country’s finest boards, riders and events stemming from this area. To celebrate the vibrant surf culture and its history, Trigger Brothers, the Peninsula Surfriders Club and the Maladiction Longboarders are putting on a Vintage Surf Day at Point Leo next month. The day will feature a vintage swap meet, with people invited to bring along their boards and other memorabilia. There will also be a single fin contest, with a special invitational expression session from some of the legends of the sport. It’s a chance to see some vintage gear from public and private collectors, with suppliers also showing their wares. The Business of Yoga will run yoga and

pilates demonstrations and classes free of charge; there will be photo shoots with past and present surfriders club members and manufacturers’ teams; and plenty of food and beverages will be available. The vintage surf day is a not-forprofit event, with all exhibitors and boardriders’ clubs donating their time and equipment. So come along and celebrate the people, the history and the culture of surfing on Sunday, November 18 at Point Leo. And if you have a classic surf car or wagon, bring it along too. Directions in Groove are back, releasing the single Strangers Talking from their first studio album in thirteen years. The multi award winning collective formed in Sydney during the 1990s and have produced several winning EP’s and albums. Strangers Talking is the title track from their latest album effort, Clearlight. The single is a shining example of DIG’s ability to intermingle genres, combining contemporary jazz with smooth electro funk. Laura Stitt provides the rich, silky vocals that seem to seamlessly blend with the traditional DIG sound. Strangers Talking is an enjoyable listen and is a classic example of the mature and unique sound of DIG. If mellow laid back beats is your cup of tea, then I suspect this one is for you. 3.5/5 JESSICA SCUDAMORE

There’s a lot to like about the second LP from Melbourne’s Nigel Wearne, mainly the story telling, but having a fiddle/Voila playing that doesn’t get old real quick, is something pretty amazing. Black Crow is full of image inducing lyrics set in a country/ folk genre. He starts off strong, with the first track being the first single off the album, Stealth has a good pace that sets up what’s to come. Next Montreal has a bit of Irish feel, and can definitely hear it being played at a pub, with some drunks joining in. The change up comes right in the middle of the album, Beautiful Blue slows it right down, but still keeps the interest with Nigel’s lyrics and vocals emotion coming through. Black Crow comes out November 2nd, but fans of the early release tunes can catch Nigel on tour before then! 3/5 MATT RIPPON

Our hearts wake up to the sound of In Hearts Wake’s flat out new album Divination. Recently signed to UNFD, these guys are as hard working as they are respected amongst peers and underground fans. With tracks that will blow the skin off your face on this record, from start to end of each track, you are promised the complete package of heartless screams and unhinged breakdowns. Bringing in some fresh clean guitar and singing in Traveller, also the crunch that makes you crumble in Departure with guest vocalist Winston McCall from iconic Byron Bay band Parkway Drive, these vocals add to their music an interest like no other. Some may think this album is too much to handle live, but ripping this album out at Billboards the Venue showed how much they actually put into these songs and how they can reproduce it at their gigs. 4/5 BILLY SMITH

(EPITAPH)

Melbourne based artist Leigh Sloggett’s latest offering, More Than I Need, hits all the right notes as a contemporary folkblues album. Track one, Feeling Good Today, warms the ears daring to drift into the pop -folk playing field while track two, Dog Line, by far the stand out track, takes the listener on a haunting story-telling journey. What I enjoyed most about the album was Leigh’s willingness to accompany the music with his vocal, rather than dominate it, evident in the CD’s three instrumental only tracks. My only wish is given there are only 12 relatively short songs, carrying the instrumental element through from track to track would have prolonged my “Sloggett Experience”. At times I was just warming into a song only to find it finish. More Than I Need is a must have for anyone seeking easy listening. Grab the album for your next road-trip; you’ll be 2.5/5 HADYN LEVETT arriving at your destination before you know it.

American outfit Converge have released their highly anticipated album, All We Love We Leave Behind. Hats off to Converge, they can play pretty fast, but they can also fall into an energetic mash of sound which doesn’t allow for the intricacy of each instrument to shine through. That’s just my beef with the post-hardcore / screamo genre; you could absolutely nail a riff but no one is able to tell the difference. The album has a notable authenticity in tracks like Veins And Veils and Tender Abuse, both raw and vibrant, capturing the bands live intensity. The best track by far is the instrumental Precipice, a less confronting offering, nicely showcasing the band’s versatility and dynamic. An all-out assault on your ears, set to pick the men from the boys.

be groomed for stardom. All fitted out in her new leather look, she was introduced to the hit-making team of Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who immediately got busy writing some songs as possible contenders. The title track was the first single and became a huge hit, particularly in Europe and Australia, but it was largely ignored in her home country. A second single, 48 Crash, also went straight into the charts. Both songs sold more than a million copies. Some

Originally from Northern Ireland, local indie-pop singer and songwriter Marjorie Cardwell’s debut album In Another World is a delight, despite the circumstances surrounding it’s creation. The album was finished following the diagnosis of a benign brain tumour, and subequent surgery, and there’s some really honest and unafacing ballads, delivered with the silk of Cardwell’s vocal. There’s also some pokey quirk, reminiscent of 60s and 70s, but all in all the album is underpinned with pure acoustic tones and a real live feel. Early highlights are In My Eyes and the french-lyrics of Dans Un Autre Monde, with the standout for mine being the rock-y and upbeat When We Both Fell Down. Cardwell’s gift is that she doesn’t lose her subtley on the more upbeat numbers. All in all, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Great songwriting shines through. 3/5 WALTER BENELLS

OCTOBER 2012

So Green Day are releasing three albums over the next six months. As if watching a group of middle-aged men with make-up playing punk music wasn’t bad enough, they threw this into the mix. They haven’t released any new music in three years and they seriously want us to believe that these are all equally strong records, all worth our hard-earned cash? As I’ve said before, musicians have a unique need to be instantly and continuously applauded for their work. Are you telling me that Green Day would have left something even mildly brilliant to the last of these three instalments? Considering the first single Oh Love is pretty pedestrian and that lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong has just checked himself into rehab after a glorious on-stage rant at a recent concert (which you definitely need to look up on YouTube), things aren’t looking particularly bright for the boys who brought us American Idiot, Basketcase and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. But this brings into question the need for artists to release double albums or, in this case, essentially a triple album. How many double albums can you name that are flawless? The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Prince’s Sign ‘O’ The Times would have C made for even better single albums if somebody had just convinced them to M cut songs. Even Ringo Starr thought The Beatles’ White Album should have been two Y single albums: “The White Album and The Whiter Album.” Nice one, Ringo. On the other hand, Michael Jackson successfully made people forget that CM his 1995 release HIStory was a relatively weak album by attaching a five-star MY greatest hits album on top of it. CY I know what you’re going to say: “Kog, they’re artists. They need to express themselves completely,” which is a good point. Part of me wantsCMY to say, “Yeah, well, express yourself in your own time; give me the hits” and another part of me believes that artists who are ambitious enough to K overreach in the creative process may be the only ones left with a fighting chance to create some truly great music. ELECTRIC MARY HIT FRANKSTON

Anyone who knows anything about rock in Melbourne will know about Electric Mary, the five-piece outfit who’ve been playing rock‘n’roll loud, the way it used to be, for almost 10 years! For vocalist Rusty Brown, it all stemmed from a trip to New York with guitarist Irwin Thomas (aka former Southern Sons frontman Jack Jones), where he spent time in the iconic Electric Ladyland Studios and became inspired by the history and culture of classic rock. The band were established, drawing their name from Mary Campbell, who worked at Electric Ladyland, and soon after burst on to the local gig circuit with an explosive and arresting live act that quickly grew a loyal fan base. Now, with three albums and several locally and internationally released EPs under their belts - not to mention support slots with such industry legends as Glenn Hughes/ Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Whitesnake and Judas Priest – Electric Mary are in the midst of what Brown describes as “the most powerful musical moment in any of our careers”. With the experience to tailor songs for the classic rock lover while still keeping the young audience intrigued, Electric Mary have the riffs, the power and the fans to keep making an impression on the rock scene. For Mornington Peninsula fans, and those others who share the intrigue, catch Electric Mary as they bring the rock to Pier Live’s Pelly Bar on Friday, October 19. Doors open at 8pm, tickets available from the venue or through Ticketmaster. For more info, head to www.pierlive.com.au

GET LUCKY, 13 - EXCITING ROCKABILLY VENUE It’s fair to say Moorabbin is a town that prides itself on not being taken on face value. Drive through what seems like industrial areas and bland office estates after dusk and you’d think it’s a veritable ghost town, but look a bit further and you’ll discover hidden lounges, micro-breweries and bars that will rival any you’ll find further north or down around the Peninsula. One of these is a former mechanic’s garage that has been transformed into the vibrant and exciting rockabilly venue Lucky 13 Garage. Step inside and you’ll discover a sizeable room dressed on each wall with vintage memorabilia and abundant character, not to mention a small collection of classic cars and motorbikes. Having been up and running with live music since early this year, the venue is open from 10am-6pm Monday to Thursday as well as all day Friday from 10am. Friday nights feature live rockabilly music for the public, with Saturday nights booked for functions. From next year, Lucky 13 will branch out into rockabilly Saturdays and more mainstream live acts on Fridays. There really are few better places in Melbourne’s south to catch quality rockabilly music in such a distinctly classic atmosphere. Make sure you plan ahead, and check out Lucky 13 Garage one Friday night at 8 Cochranes Rd, Moorabbin. For more information, find them on Facebook or give them a call on 9553 0011.
