KINGSWOOD On a seemingly unstoppable quest for greatness, ARIA Nominees, Kingswood were never going to be content staying home for summer. Wrapping up 2014, the four-piece rock ‘n’ roll band announced a nation-wide tour that will take them to the Chelsea Heights Hotel on Friday February 6.

Fergus Linacre is the man behind the rumbling and engrossing vocals so signature to the band’s indisputable brand of rock ‘n’ roll swagger. PEARL chat to the singer ahead of the tour, which will see Kingswood showcase their debut album, Microscopic Wars, recorded in Nashville’s legendary Blackbird Studio with Vance Powell. With heavyweights like Jack White and the Arctic Monkeys under the producer’s belt, we were keen to know how the pairing came about. “I’m not too sure how, but he heard our EP, really liked it and said he’d be interested in working with us. Considering you usually have to book him years in advance, we were lucky to take his interest. Actually, it was pretty funny because the first EP we sent to him was a song that just Al and I were working on in our little house in Kew. Al played drums (he’s the guitarist) and I played base and keyboards and we just swapped all of the instruments around for the different parts. It sounded pretty shit; I mean, Alex is a talented musician but he’s not a great drummer. So Vance got this first recording and was like ‘what have I got myself into – this band is terrible!’ I guess eventually he found out that it was a very rough demo. So we probably shouldn’t have sent a demo with the singer and guitarist doing all the instrumentals to this Grammy-winning producer, but it worked out really well and we ended up having a ball in Nashville.” The album is certainly a testament to the band’s ability to diversify their sound and still resound with audiences. Having individually been a part of punk, jazz and several other musical outfits as teens, it’s not surprising that the boys are capable of picking up unfamiliar instruments and having a tinker. It is however surprising to see the band move boldly away from the ‘Queens of the Stone Age-sound’ so successfully propagated in
previous EP’s. The album covers a span of rock, from rootsy Americana, to grungy power chords and even lighter pop-oriented material. While Linacre maintains that diversity was always within the musical realms of Kingswood, he credits Powell and Nashville for the confidence to explore those avenues in Microscopic Wars. “Powell made us feel like there were absolutely no boundaries. He made us feel really confident and free to do whatever we wanted. I think it was good to get out of Australia and the leave the whole mindset of ‘will this fly on a certain radio station?’ behind us. It’s not something anyone wants to admit to thinking when writing a song, but it’s a hang-up for many Australian musicians. A good way to escape all that was to get out of the country and be in Nashville where so many incredible musicians and people surrounded us. We just wanted to make music we’d love and the musicians around us would respect.” Microscopic Wars stormed into the ARIA charts top ten. Despite the band’s lack of emphasizing appeal to the major broadcaster, several singles from the album have invaded tripe j’s airwaves on high-rotation. While the Microscopic Wars has taken the band to a new level, Kingswood had the unique experience of touring almost every major Australian festival prior to releasing their first album, in addition to supporting the likes of Aerosmith, Grinspoon and The Living End on their national tours. “I think we kind of didn’t feel like we deserved it. I always felt that you weren’t a ‘real’ band until you had an album, until you could hold that album in your hand and say this is our first album. It’s the gun, you know?” Smoking gun now in hand, the boys will turn their sights to international shores next year, hoping to expand their touring opportunities in America and Europe. New Years Eve proved that music fans are supporting quality acts and concepts with some great success stories like Beyond The Valley attracting over 15,000 and local venues like Rosebud Hotel ramping up things from their usual annual format and reaping the rewards for backing live music for the masses. Red Hot Summer has just hit town receiving the same results for upping the anti with a huge line up and it’s great to see Frankston’s Waterfront Festival presenting an indy stage featuring young local original acts…coincidently all of whom have been featured in recent months by Pearl. So it feels like we’re actually making a difference promoting music in our hometown, and with Mornington Shire moving to Oz touring artist caliber headliners for Australia Day 2015 I can’t help but again feel like we’ve made a difference, pushing the boundaries and raising the benchmark with Pearl’s support of the event in the preceding few years transforming it from a carnival to another annual music event on our local calendar! WAGONS ROLL IN FOR BETWEEN THE BAYS How quickly time flies! It’s hard to believe it, but the Peninsula’s much-loved Between the Bays will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on February 28. The festival, which takes place at the picturesque Penbank in Moorooduc, has earned a reputation for great music, food, drinks and family activities since its inception in 2005. Whilst there are plenty of festivals to choose from in the Australian summer, the folks at Between the Bays have always managed to find a point of difference, consistently putting together line-ups that traverse the Aussie music landscape - from established rock and roll royalty through to credible career artists and young up-and-comers. This year is no exception, with local favourites and genuine Oz-rock legends Mark Seymour and James Reyne headlining the all-day event. Reyne will perform the songs made famous with his band Australian Crawl, whilst Seymour will mix Hunters and Collectors hits with more recent cuts from his highly successful solo career. Also on the bill this year are cult-heroes Custard, veteran Latin collective Combo la Revelacion, The Billabong Boys, Indigenous Hip Hop Projects and Sweet Jean. This year will also mark the first chance Peninsula music fans have had to see Melbourne’s own Wagons at a local festival - and it seems like it will be the ideal introduction to the twisted country world of Henry Wagons and his troupe of musical outlaws and vagabonds. Of course, keen punters may have caught Henry’s BBQ show on network television, or even been swept up before by a sweaty club performance
at regular haunts The Corner Hotel, Northcote Social Club or caravan Club in Oakleigh. But to the uninitiated – prepare to be entertained. Henry and co put on a live show like no other in the current Aussie music scene – mixing the drama and flamboyance of 70s outlaw country with a frenetic stage presence that is equal parts Nick Cave, Johnny Cash and Iggy Pop. But of course, it’s not just about the music. As the sun sets over the picturesque venue, you can sample a broad range of culinary options - from a simple sausage sizzle through to delights such as wood fired pizzas and gourmet festival food stands. Vegetarian options will be available, as well as great coffee and a range of kid-friendly treats. Those who would rather bring their own food are welcome to bring a picnic. This year, festival-goers won’t be let down by range of beverages as Between the Bays have employed festival specialists to run the bar. Drinks will be available when the gates open and for those not drinking alcohol, there is a free water station for topping up your own water bottle. All proceeds raised by Between the Bays go to Penbank School’s partnership with the Wugularr School, Beswick (in a remote part of the Northern Territory), helping the Wugularr children to reach their full potential. have some creative control over what you’re doing, and we are very about being in complete control of our music. Doing it independently means that we get to make the record exactly the way that we want to, we get to put the exact songs that we want to on there, everything from the ground up is as pure as it can be.
INTERVIEW The Getaway Plan fans rejoice; the boys will be playing at the Pelly Bar on January 24 and will also be releasing their new crowd-funded album Dark Horses sometime in the next few months. PEARL’s Jessica Mills spoke to lead singer Matthew Wright about what the band behind hits such as Where the city meets the sea and The Reckoning, has planned for 2015 and how the band has changed since reforming after a short hiatus in 2010. PEARL: Tell me about your new album Dark Horses which you are currently recording in Brunswick… WRIGHT: We started out with about 35 songs and we’ve now narrowed it down to 12 for the record. There’s a not heap that I want to give away about the music just yet. But all we can say is that we’re really, really excited and without sounding too cliché we think it’s some of the best work that we’ve ever done. PEARL: What made you decide to crowd-fund it? WRIGHT: We have had some difficult experiences with record companies in the past. Generally when you’re a musician working with a label and they are investing a lot of money into you, there always comes a point where they
PEARL: Five per cent of money raised post pledge goal, which you have now reached, is donated to Beyond Blue. Why did you choose that charity? WRIGHT: We just thought that it was a good cause. We are all very passionate about supporting mental health issues, a few of us have been affected by it before, and it’s just an important cause for us. PEARL: Where did inspiration for this album come from? WRIGHT: The biggest inspiration is just everything that we have been through as a band over the past five years. There’s been a lot of shit going on in the camp, some personal stuff, we’ve gone through a few members, we kind of got pretty close at one point to calling it again. This record is our triumph over that, we certainly are not throwing in the towel and we are stoked to be where we are. PEARL: You’ve recently celebrated your 10 year anniversary as a band. What’s been your biggest highlight over those years? WRIGHT: One of the biggest highlights was when we reformed. After all the negativity that was surrounding it all when we broke up, a few of us weren’t speaking to each other during that time, to be able to come back and be friends again was massive for us.
having a break for one year? WRIGHT: We kind of just fell back into place. There wasn’t really any awkwardness. Clint and myself ran into each one night when we were out at a club, we had a conversation and decided we weren’t quite done with what we had intended to do with this band and things just fell back into place quite smoothly. PEARL: What have you got planned for your show in Frankston later this month? Will you be playing any new stuff? WRIGHT: Yeah we will be testing out some new material for sure. We don’t want to over do it because we hate it when we go and see bands that we like and they just play a set of all new songs, we do want to make sure it is well balanced. PEARL: What’s on the agenda for 2015? WRIGHT: We plan to release the record as soon as possible, whether that be in the first quarter or first half of the year. There’s still a lot of logistics to work out when you’re releasing a record independently. We also want to continue to tour as much as we can- we’ve got some pretty extensive tour plans up our sleeves for this year. We want to keep the ball rolling this year, we don’t want to wait another three or four years between records. PEARL: What was it like recording together again after
wilson & white
A few years ago, fab harmonica player, Matthew White was walking past Blue Note Music in Wells St, Frankston when he heard awesome music drifting down the stairs. It lured him in and to his surprise discovered Troy Wilson playing in and running his regular Saturday blues workshop. Impressed with what he heard, they instantly hit it off and realizing they had the same love of 20s and 30s along with 50s Chicago blues music, they decided to get together and perform. Their very first band was called King Catfish and had five members and was impressive. After they disbanded, they each went their own way, however, Wilson and White continued on as a duo and have been honing and perfecting their exciting groove ever since. When White is not being the full time teacher and a proud new dad, he spends the rest of his time gigging with Wilson. White’s supurb harp playing is awesome and he does justice to his ole time favorites like Sunnyboy Williamson and Charlie Musselwhite when playing their songs. Wilson on the other hand is a professional full time muso and teaches music therapy in schools and to kids about to commence advanced rehab. Says Wilson, “It kind of helps wind them down and often helps channel their creative energy into a project which in turn helps them feel positive about themselves.”
Wilson is hoping to record a couple of live songs at the Peninsula Blues Club in Frankston soon with the eventual intention of releasing a CD in the middle of 2015, so keep a look out for this. Although both may ponder going solo at some stage in their careers, at the moment Wilson and White are coasting along nicely, getting repeated gigs at various festivals and

venues around the burbs and city. “It’s what we love doing and it gives us great satisfaction seeing punters enjoying us playing the traditional songs.” Says Wilson. The guys certainly look the part with the established wearing of dark sunnies, hat, and cool attire. Especially White’s bowler hat that looks so imperturbable and perfectly suitable on him. He jokes, “It’s basically a homage to my favorite harp player, Sunnyboy Williamson. As a black man travelling from America to England for the first time, he was astounded at being treated respectfully by the English. In America black musicians didn’t have this respect. So he decided to always wear a triple breasted suit, jacket, bowler hat and an umbrella over his arm, as a mark of respect towards the English. I wear my bowler hat as a remembrance to him,” smiles White. The boys say Melbourne has become a mecca for the blues in the last few years and people are enjoying the resurgence. No doubt this is awesome news for blues muso’s and punters alike. Keep a look out for Wilson and White playing the local venues. They are definitely worth the watch

As a family we travelled to Memphis Tennessee and to see where soul music was born. We visited with Reverend Al Greens Soul Singers, Sun Studios and Graceland; in my opinion never did we hear anyone with such a soulfully melodic voice like that of Mahalia Barnes. Yet another great credit to Australian music! You may recognize the last name – Barnes. That’s right; she is the eldest daughter of iconic Australian rock singer-songwriter Jimmy Barnes. Mahalia has been obsessed with soul music since her teens. About eight years ago she started doing her own gigs in soul and jazz clubs around the Sydney area. Those club shows have established her own unique style and bought together the Soul Mates. They have worked with some industry heavy weights to put together their first EP, reviewers say its “honest, organic and the band is incredible” “Tracked live to tape, just like the old school soul/rock albums that we all love, the EP has great energy” In Pearl’s opinion it’s a warm sounding, organic, tough and soulful record. You certainly can close your
eyes and imagine you are sitting in Beal Street listening to one of the headline acts at BB Kings diner over a plate of ribs. What a thought, what a sound, what a great memory just listening to the Mahalia’s voice – so soulful. If the EP is anything to go by; seeing the band perform live you will be in for a treat. Some music written by Mahalia’s and her husband “Little light” a song written about their baby girl, “Counting on You” an Al Green flavoured number to “Don’t Hold Back” a fun, lively number reminiscent of the Rolling Stones. If you too want to hear what Memphis feels like to me – you can see the band at the Mornington Park, Australia Day, 26th January from 8pm. I have been told not to expect a quiet, polite, restrained gig or a gimmicky soul show with costumes and scripted banter – this band covers the full range of the soul music spectrum. Heidi LaFaerie, their manager told me they plan to record a debut EP first, followed by their debut album a few weeks later. With fingers crossed, both should be available early 2015.

Another interesting tit bit in the pipeline is Troy Wilson’s Youth in Blues, which will be manifesting via the Peninsula Blues Club in May 2015, so keep a look out. Recently, The Swamp Box bluesed it up for their live recording at Baha in Rye. No better combination than a balmy beach evening, a responsive audience and the brilliant Matt Jones doing sound. The Vibe
is raw and peeps are pretty excited to hear the end product. Plus remember to support Safari Motel by purchasing their debut album, Live @ Soundbar, Blues Funk & Soul too. I guess it’s important to continue supporting all these great muso’s and to appreciate their love of the craft and their drive to gig mid week and weekends. It’s Hak Wanger! Supporting Australian guitar players and artists, while bringing the best guitar performances from around the world Guitar Gods & Masterpieces is a show for guitar players and guitar music fans that incorporates humour, entertainment and educational segments on all things guitar. Broadcasting since June 2010, Guitar Gods is the only guitar-TV-show in the world entering its 20th season and over 230 episodes to this point. Featuring independent up and coming Oz talent and a huge flow of international and Oz A-List guests, that keep fans coming back for more interviews and jam sessions from their favourite players such as Deep Purple, Kiss, Def Leppard, Rival Sons, Airbourne, Wolf Mother and hundreds more. Pearl catches up with Producer and celebrity Host Hack Wanger from TV Show Guitar Gods and Masterpieces. PEARL: So tell us where the concept came for Guitar Gods and Masterpieces. WANGER: Well over the years the TV industry has been in decline for presenting live music on TV as they are infatuated with Reality Karaoke TV, these shows do not support real music artists. When I was young I could see Tommy Emmanuel or Brett Garsed or The Baby Animals on various different TV shows. So one day I just said to myself – hey someone needs to make a guitar music TV show. So that was the reason for the concept as commercial TV stopped filming guitar music and even when they did it was still few and far between. PEARL: Did you have any film background? WANGER: No not at all, Could not even focus a camera. It was all just trial and error. I was given 1 week to make a pilot episode and then 4 weeks to start broadcasting. That was 4.5 years ago and have now gone past 230 episodes with only 4 repeats. We have a great sponsor in CMI and ESP guitars that pays for a lot of the expenses to keep broadcasting for

the loyal guitar addicts out there. PEARL: You seem to have an abundance of content to present. WANGER: Well there is so much great talent in Melbourne alone, from all guitar genres. Rock bands like Toe Hider, Electric Mary, Dakara Dirt if given radio exposure would be huge, but have a better chance overseas. There is also incredible guitar talent here that Guitar Gods & Masterpieces tries to present along side international content. PEARL: Who have been some of your fave artists to interview? WANGER: There have been many; Steve Vai was a big moment as I have followed his career closely along with Joe Satriani, Tommy Emmanuel, Derek Trucks, Steve Lukathur, Glenn Hughes, Steve Morse and Joe Bonamassa. From a local level if ‘Blues God’ Geoff Achison hadn’t said yes to the first interview then there may have been no Guitar Gods and Masterpieces. PEARL: What’s the future of Channel 31? WANGER: At this stage we have until the end of 2015 as the Liberal Government has decided to sell the frequency. Prepare yourself for a hilarious night when three great Australian comedy acts The Nelson Twins, John Burgess and Richard Marks come to the Westernport Hotel in Hastings on Friday January 23. The Nelson Twins, aka. Justin and Chris, have a down to earth, cheeky humour that audiences can’t resist, and one which saw them catapulted into the Grand Final of Australia’s Got Talent in 2012. Although they didn’t win the show, they certainly won a place in many Australian’s hearts with their matching beards, hair styles and yellow Australia jumpers worn on the show and now being worn everywhere from their comedy gigs, to the beach and shopping centers. The two certainly take being identical to the next level! Just look them up on YouTube and these bearded twins will have you laughing in no time with cracking one liners often at each other’s expense. Fellow comedian Jeff Green can vouch for their talent. “These fellas are destined to be household names – they’ve got wit, intelligence and fantastic comic timing. I hate them,” he says. The Nelson Twins, who hail from rural New South Wales, are rising stars on the international scene as well, performing their show to sold out audiences in Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival. The multi-talented twins have also created a curriculum-based program, which they perform for secondary schools and they also do corporate gigs so you can be sure their performance will have something for everyone. The Nelson Twins perform as a fundraiser for the Cancer Council alongside a huge memorabilia auction and raffles followed by the boys from Crave playing all your rock anthems especially for the Australia Day weekend. The fun doesn’t stop there as regular larrikins Olly & Scuzzi return for Sunday night (no work Monday) with their own blend of sing-a-long antics and mayhem from 7pm. made a great album. Not just great, but an album that may very well be their best. This was quite remarkable. Think about it. How many bands make seven albums, let alone have it be their best work? Every successful band begins with an initial gush of public interest that is almost always based purely on the quality of their music. Sustained success is attained by different factors – creating an image, a brand that people feel a connection to, making ‘good’ music which is anchored by the public’s knowledge of your ‘great’ music. But, for whatever reason, by the time a band gets to their 7th album, the best is behind them - they’re cruising. A few years ago I heard the Foo Fighters were returning from their self-imposed hiatus. I didn’t think much of it. 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace was more of their traditional same, which by now was tired and underwhelming and their Greatest Hits collection which came out in 2009 offered one single, Wheels, which sounded like the first sure fire sign the Fooeys were on their way to a retirement to pedestrian rock n roll. Around the time of their return, a friend offered me tickets to a gig to their forthcoming tour. I smuggishly declined, explaining that Grohl and his troops were past it … Boy, was that a mistake. Bit-by-bit as I went about my daily business I began to hear different tracks and snippets from the new album at a record store, on the TV, in a friend’s car. And then it dawned on me, the Foo Fighters, with their 7th album, had

Every time they make a mediocre album their fans will think, “Remember that time we wrote them off and they released Wasting Light.” Almost 4 years on, it’s still a modern classic. It whipped new life into their trademark American sound and exhibited their unique ability to craft old school rock n roll tunes with aggressively beautiful melodies.
studio. The documentary is made by HBO, the American cable network responsible for almost every iconic TV series in the 21st century. So just to recap, there are eight cities, eight episodes and eight songs. Unfortunately, the songs aren’t that good … I mean … they’re not that great. I suspect it may be a result of the new, possibly limiting creative process and attempting to achieve the same glossy shine of Wasting Light. With the exception of the The Feast and the Famine, almost all of the songs on Sonic Highways would not have made the cut on Wasting Light. Irrespective of the music, the band has given us an amazing documentary on the significance and history of American music. From the Go-go scene in Washington to the grunge revolution of Seattle, Sonic Highways is a must see for any music lover. P.S, this time around I got my tickets to see the band in Feb.
For their latest effort, the Fooeys have done something completely new – They’ve created a documentary. In the documentary, they travel to eight of the most important music cities in America – Their journey begins in Chicago and ends in New York. While in these cities, front man Dave Grohl interviews custodians of the city’s music history Willie Nelson in Austin, Trombone Shorty in New Orleans. These interviews form the basis of the lyrics Grohl writes as the band spend a week recording in one of the city’s iconic

January’s a big month for country music, with the annual Tamworth Festival and the prestigious Golden Guitar Awards taking place in the latter half. Victoria will be well-represented at the festival as usual, with folks like The Davidson Brothers, Mustered Courage and Kristy Cox nominated for gongs. I’ll be in town to play my own shows and take in the great atmosphere – if you’re thinking about doing the same I definitely recommend it! But if you’re “stuck” on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula for the summer, good country music is still very much within reach! I’m always a fan of the program at the Caravan Club in Oakleigh, and this month is no exception. The club plays host to one of my favourite local singer-songwriters, the brilliant Liz Stringer on January 31st- as well as legendary Texan songwriter, philosopher, politician and satirist Kinky Friedman a few days earlier on January 23rd. Australia’s independent Female Vocalist of the year Aleyce Simmonds is hitting town soon, for a show at Chapel of Chapel in Prahran on Monday, February 2nd. Aleyce will be joined by Scotland’s Jack Henderson – a guy that’s best described as a mixture of Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and maybe even Neil Young. Jack was a touring member of iconic Canadian 90s band The Cowboy Junkies and has earned a reputation around the world as a serious songwriter. Oh yeah, and yours truly will also be hitting the stage with Aleyce and Jack. Tickets are available now from http://chapeloffchapel.com.au
country fans of the ‘alt’ variety would be well-advised to check out two shows taking place there in early February. On Friday the 6th, Neil Murray will take the stage. Neil was a founding member of the famed Warumpi Band and since then has established himself as a significant Australia singer-songwriter. The next day, the massively underrated former taxi driver Perry Keys will be in town, with support from country-folky girl group the Broads. Both shows are highly recommended. Finally, I’d urge you to look out for house concerts on the Peninsula early this year. Caitlin Harnett and Josh Rennie-Hynds will be appearing in Bittern in early February, whilst myself and Harmony James will be at the same venue (or ‘house’ to be precise) later in the month. I don’t like to give away details of house concerts in print, but feel free to google any of the artists to arrange your place in the lounge room. LACHLAN BRYAN Lachlan Bryan is primarily a singer/ songwriter. His most recent album, Black Coffee, was awarded country album of the year by The Age, and picked up a Golden Guitar in Tamworth. MILK MURPHY “I want to learn 1000 songs” is the personal goal of local Peninsula Blues singer Lisa Foster (pictured). With musical influences including Victoria Spivey, the Memphis Jug Band, Lucille Bogan, Lil Johnson, Laura Smith and Memphis Minnie there is no shortage of material for Lisa to learn. Lisa has joined forces with Troy Wilson to give life to a new pre-war Blues music duo called Milk Murphy. Many hours are spent deciphering lyrics from old recordings in order to share the music they both love. Milk Murphy has been getting out and about touring the local community radio stations. At the Women in Blues Show on Southern FM we heard them play a few of their favourite Bo Carter tunes and they followed this up a few weeks later at RPP FM singing a couple of songs with Heather Miles. About 14 years ago, as a graduate of the Blue Note Music School, Lisa came to the stage in her 10 piece disco cover band Boogie Nights and has continued to evolve as a musician with her covers band, aptly named Covered Enough. Upon catching up with long time friend Troy Wilson and hearing some Lucille Bogan tunes, the Blues seed was planted and now Lisa sings in the style of Bessie Smith and Milk Murphy was born; So let’s countdown the 1000 tunes during 2015 for Lisa and Troy. To quote Geoff Achison “Our bandleader is longer with us in body, but his spirit lives on and he left us some great music”. Indeed he did, the Dutch Tilders legacy came to full flight in a revival show at the Opal Room in Upway. Winston Galea and Geoff Achison (ex Dutch Tilders Blues Club) and Peter Beulke (ex Dutch Tilders Blusicians) came together for a 3 set showcase in memory of the Blues Master General. How do you pick a set list when there is so much wonderful material to choose from? Great tunes from the day were delivered with flare and respect – House of the Rising Sun, Baby Please don’t go, Going back to the City and Bad Books to name but just a few. A who’s who of the local Blues scene was in attendance to honour the man, cherish the memories and to create some new ones.
TROY WILSON The Peninsula’s Troy Wilson has had a busy year in 2014. His tireless efforts at the Peninsula Blues Club (PBC) month to month have kept the club well on track in its first year of operation. As well as his regular gig schedule with the band, Troy can often be seen all over Frankston City participating in many local outdoor music events ranging from the Frankston Station, White St Mall, Women’s White ribbon Day and even a Muppets Christmas carol show. Troy ended the year in style performing solo as the opening act for Geoff Achison and the Souldiggers at the Greyhound Hotel for their 20th Anniversary DVD launch. His acoustic traditional blues set was an ideal warm up before Geoff and the Souldiggers took to the stage. The Internet has given us access to many wonderful things: online banking, news and information and cats playing the piano, just to name a few. Unfortunately, even the craziest of cat videos cannot make up for the fact that sometimes, when it comes to the Internet, convenience just stops being convenient.
So, looks like it’s back to dragging yourself out of bed and priming your finger to press refresh if you want to save those precious dollars. Holding onto your sanity is another matter.
Before the advent of the Internet and online retail, if you missed out on tickets to a show, you had two options, and neither were particularly pleasant: you put your blinkers on to avoid jealously while silently seething with rage, or you went to the show with a pocket full of dreams and cash for a reasonably priced scalper. In 2014, futuristic technology slapped tickets out of the hands of scalpers and into the online sphere. A whole host of ‘secondary market’ websites have now appeared that serve, for all intents and purposes, as catalogs for resale tickets that have already been purchased from the big-dog ticketing companies. So basically, ‘secondary market’ is a nicer way for saying scalping. While the companies behind said sites claim they’re merely serving the market, the fact that the tickets could have come from almost anywhere makes them a tidy conduit for scalpers. Of course, no one likes to wake up early to sit at their computer and refresh the Ticketmaster website repeatedly, only to read an exhausted allocation message through tear-filled eyes. In theory, it seems a little less traumatic and a whole lot more convenient to scour these secondary sites for tickets from the comfort of your computer at a reasonable time, yet a recent report from Forbes suggest the secondary market isn’t exactly as consumer-friendly as you might be led to believe. Looking over the list of the ten most expensive music tours by average price on the secondary market, if you waited to buy tickets to a tour, you ended up significantly more out-of-pocket than if you’d gone through primary ticket sales. According to Forbes, the average price paid on the secondary market for a Fleetwood Mac ticket was $358.91, the highest of any tour this year. Justin Timberlake came in second with tickets for his 20/20 Experience World Tour going for an average of $293.64 each.

ACROSS THE PENINSULA Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb has announced an amazing line-up of local and well-known musicians who will entertain crowds on January 26 for Australia Day 2015. “With a diverse and full stage program at the Mornington, Rosebud, Rye, Sorrento & Dromana events, music lovers will be spoiled for choice when celebrating our National Day,” she said. There will be musical acts at all sites including Mount Eliza and Hastings. Critically acclaimed children’s band – the Mighty Buzzniks will open the popular outdoor concert at Mornington Park at 3pm. If Dr Seuss started a rock band – the Mighty Buzzniks would be it! The Buzzniks make smart and edgy music

for kids who like to rock with songs that are full of energy, fun and complexity mixing an array of instruments, diverse sounds and fabulous harmonies. The Mornington event will also feature Peninsula favourites Tony Byrne and the Peninsula Allstars and the Waz E. James Band, with the Headliner - Mahalia Barnes and the Soulmates performing just prior to the fireworks from 8.15pm. With over 20 years’ experience under their belt, Tony Byrne and the Peninsular Allstars bring a show that is especially catered for a live audience. Waz E. James and his band (pictured) have established themselves as one of Australia more popular bands, rocking venues with their own blend of high energy country blues. Regulars on the festival circuit, their acoustically driven sound has been catching the attention of music lovers all over the world. As the daughter of one of Australia’s most successful vocalists, Mahalia Barnes is one of our most well-known soul singers, after her success on the first season of “The Voice Australia”. Mahalia and The Soul Mates will cover the full range of the soul music spectrum with a show that is dynamic, organic, raw and exciting. At the other end of the Peninsula the Rye Australia Day event will feature the James
Vincent Trio playing jazz, swing, bossanova, soul, blues and reggae. Crowds can then settle in and enjoy the glory days of rock n roll with Legend the Band. Closing the event will be headline act Hotel California the very best of the Eagles who are a group of multitalented musicians with a dynamic and exciting show that will appeal to audiences of all ages. JIMI’s BACK @ DAVEY’S Davey’s Sunday Soultrain is back for the entire month of January with all the big names in blues, soul and rock ‘n roll forming a line-up that will make your ears water. One such big name making his return to Davey’s is guitarist Jimi Hocking and his Blues Machine band on January 18. Fresh off his 25th anniversary tour with the Screaming Jets, Jimi has now relocated and settled in Mornington which is great news for blues fans on the Peninsula. When Jimi comes to town you can expect a singer, songwriter, guitarist and all round musician of the highest calibre who is said to be the electric love child of T-Bone Walker, BB King and Jimi Hendrix. His combination of high speed picking and blues bends on a discography that boasts 15 albums have earned Jimi the reputation he has today. On stage he is in his element, strutting with his band and pulling all the classic stunts which make him one of the must see acts in blues today. A tough act to follow but if anyone can its one of the most exciting performers in Australia Phil Para on January 25. A
guitarist that pushes all the boundaries and has many original songs which have earned him a vast and loyal audience of an incredibly varied mix of ages. Phil’s passionate and genuine interpretations of blues and rock classics and his powerful presence keep audiences spellbound and coming back week after week. Rounding off January and bringing us into February is guitar virtuoso Geoff Achison on the 1st. The self taught musician who has won a swag of awards ropes in the audience with organic, soulful and gutsy music during his live set that features an infectious mix of catchy originals. FACADES Get an energetic hit of Indie-rock music this Australia Day with dynamic live performers Facades launching their sound to the audience at Mornington Park. The Mornington Peninsula based three piece group have been playing together for seven years but only recently started doing public shows and with their powerful sound and passion for live music, are quickly becoming very popular. Facades are steadily gaining a reputation for their fanatical stage presence, solid rock grooves and funky breakdowns that infect a crowd with dancing fever and non stop toe tapping. Their English indie-rock style comes from major influences such as the Arctic Monkeys, Foals, The Kooks and The Wombats. They’ve gravitated towards the experimental approach to song writing that Foals incorporate in their music as well as the foundational pop-rock vibes you feel when hearing the Arctic Monkeys. JOSH WADE HARDENS UP At just 19 comedian and Youtube sensation Josh Wade is part of the new bred of new media performers who have their worldwide audiences in a frenzy. Josh Wade began creating content online in 2007 at the age of 13. It was through this online outlet that Josh developed a passion for acting, comedy and video production. Josh continued to deliver his own viral videos throughout his teenage years from his home town Townsville, Queensland. A growing fan base and early success encouraged him to craft and adapt his online material into a one hour solo stand up comedy show. BRUTHEN BLUES & ARTS FESTIVAL The cozy East Gippsland town of Bruthen comes alive for the 20th Annual Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival, bringing an amazing line-up of serious Blues musicians, a family-friendly atmosphere, a huge and colourful market, music workshops, and plenty of kids activities. The Bruthen Blues and Arts festival has something for everyone. The festival lineup will include some of Australia’s favourite Blues-RootsSoul performers, including Andrea Marr, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk, The Detonators, Nick Charles, Major Tom & the Atoms, The Jackson Four, Lazy Eye, just to name a few. The Festival Program kicks off with the Friday night Jam Competition, which is always popular. During the day on Saturday the shady Main Street Gardens will come alive with free music, buskers, market stalls and workshops. On the Saturday night there are two venues to choose from, the laid back and family friendly Blues Cafe at the Hall, and the Big Blues Bash party at the Bruthen Inn Hotel. The free music and market continues
on Sunday in the Main Street, along with the ever popular Duck Race on the Tambo River. The Festival winds up with the Blues Recovery on Sunday afternoon at the Bruthen Inn Hotel. The Full Festival Weekend Pass is only $80, and this gives you access to all venues and all workshops over the entire weekend. Earlybird tickets are available to purchase until the 31st January from our website. Call out to Jammers and Buskers Bruthen Blues and Arts Festival committee is inviting jammers and buskers to be part of its 20th festival. The Friday Night Jam is held at the Bruthen Inn Hotel on the 13th of February. This event is hugely popular and kicks off the festival with a bang. Jammers come from near and far to perform for the chance to win a number of prizes, including a paid gig at the Saturday night Blues Café event at the Bruthen Hall. To register for the Jam email the address below. Then on Saturday the 14th February the Buskers Garden will open at 10am at the Blue Bee Café in the Main
Street. Buskers of any genre are invited to come along, put your name on the chalk board and show us your stuff. All busking acts are welcome; soloists, groups, performance artists, acrobats… all welcome to add their own brand of magic to the atmosphere of free entertainment in the gardens. Festival Exhibition In this anniversary year the festival offers a huge program of exciting artists and expects a bumper crowd. Just as the festival season heats up with some big events, so too are some more local events announced, with local roots/rock festival ‘Shed Rock’ now entering it’s fifth year with a February 7, 2015 date confirmed. The event is the brainchild of Turk Tresize (aka. Mr Shed Rock), starting as a small event for fellow musicians and friends at his farm, 50kms south east of Melbourne in Cannons Creek. After two tumultuous festivals in 2011 battling the weather, the last two events have been all about “keeping it real and raw, and rockin’ out in the sun,” according to organisers. Gates are set to open at 9am for campers, with bands starting from midday in a line-up including headliners Phil Manning and Eric Lee Beddingfield (USA), as well
as Electric Mary, Dirt River Radio , King of the North and more. You can kick back and enjoy the countryside, fresh air, great tunes and a few cool drinks before sleeping under the stars. PENINSULA MUSICIANS COME TOGETHER What a great night was had at the Mornington Peninsula Music Network AGM, many MP musicians and supporters came together at Mornington Brewery to celebrate the milestones and achievements of the Network. Since 2010 the Network has designed and administered a website/database/Facebook page for Peninsula musicians, bands, teachers, tutors, businesses and choirs; committee members have been involved in a variety of performance opportunities, strengthened links with other music industry organisations such as Music Victoria the state peak body for music in Victoria. The Network has been generating a viable and valued point of reference for our local sector and has been instrumental in driving a Music Development Plan for the Shire and a draft of the document will be available for the broader community discussion to have their say over the coming months. Five Network members were co-opted to participate on

the committee to further progress initiatives across the Mornington Peninsula; Michael Snelson, Lori Hakim, Ian Pav, John McGregor, and Merry Hallowell. Along with the President Simon Mills and others who spoke Geoff Carson, Manager of Libraries Arts & Culture outlined the importance and need for our creative communities, artists and musicians to lobby Councillors to understand the needs of the arts and in particular the music sector. He urged everyone present to write and make demands of council to hear what they have to say... OK everything is ready for the CD/EP to go on sale So where and how are you going to sell it??? Let’s get one issue straight off the bat –if you don’t heavily promote it, work your butt off to market the CD and be smart about your use of all forms of media, regardless of the genre then you may not end up selling that many. In reality, 95% of artists still sell 99% of their hard product at (or because of) gigs when the emotion is running high from a great performance and the audience members are hyped to want more. So if you are not gigging and really interacting with your fan base live – you’ll need to do even more work to get out there and get sales (especially with the volume needed to make a reasonable return from digital sales). You need to be to make it easy for people to find your music, hear your music and especially buy your music. Having said that – people are still selling hard product as well as digital & making good income. So here are my top eight tips for maximising sales. . At gigs 1. You do need to gig and you need ‘product’ to sell at those gigs! It may be hard copies of the CD/EP, digital download cards, usb sticks &/or merch. But if you want to maximise the potential of your gig , you need to have something for them to buy while you are their focus. 2. Your best chance to build a following and more sales is at gigs. Collecting email addresses, getting audience to ‘like’ you or join you on twitter during a gig, exponentially increases your chances of them becoming true followers 3. Have something (lots of things) that can be put out, referring people to your online sales points and website General 4. Remember you cannot sell directly on Facebook and Twitter – so you MUST be using messaging on social networks that move people to the places of sale
5. Build value as part of (or hopefully before) the ask. Why should the buy your product? What makes it special? Tell them! 6. Don’t look at streaming as an income source – see it as marketing tools. Dont ignore this important chance for new people to hear your music – it is not going away BUT instead of putting up all your songs and then complaining about the lack of income flow .. see it as paid marketing.. My suggestion? Put up one or two songs ONLY on Spotify and especially Pandora (because if accepted goes into rotation with the big names that are ‘like you’) and direct people to your sales sites – so if they like you they have to buy you to get more. 7. Structure a campaign of hype and communication prerelease, at release, post release and along the way. Going to release a single (or two)? How can people hear what the music sounds like (without them hearing it all and not buying)? Dont just say ‘please buy my CD I need the money’ (or something that sounds like that) – maximise the benefits, build the desire and the need for them to buy it -and buy it for friends etc - what about multiple buy discounts/ package deals? But sell it and dont be repetitive with the same message week after week – structure a ‘program of messages’ to make it interesting for them to read and hear from you again. 8. When you send something personalise the message. Dont bulk send or group message all the time. Whether it is hard copy snail mail, an email attachment or anything – the more individual the communication to the receiver, the more they feel ‘special’ and involved with you... the more they will become a true fan, endorser and purchaser Remember if you need any more information or assistance with any of the above, contact us.

GEORGE HARRISON (All things must pass)
Within months of the Beatles official breakup, (April, 1970), George Harrison released his first real solo album All Things Must Pass in November 1970. His previous two albums were Wonderwall which was a soundtrack for a film and Electronic sounds which was basically just that. The first single released from the All Things Must Pass album was the now classic My Sweet Lord. Harrison had been seriously involved in his search for spiritual enlightenment for some time and it was to manifest throughout much of his continued solo career. Having been somewhat suffocated as a Beatle by the overpowering song writing efforts of Lennon and McCartney he had

amassed a stockpile of songs written during the later part of the Beatles years, especially since 1968. Wanting to make a clean break from all things Beatle, Harrison decided to ask record producer Phil Spector to produce the album rather than using Beatles producer George Martin. When Spector visited Harrison at his Friar park estate in early 1970 to have a listen to some demos, he was astonished to find that “a couple of ditties’ turned out to be more like hundreds. The album was released as a massive 3 album vinyl set, which I believe to be the first time that a 3LP set had ever been released by a pop or rock artist. There are way too many songs on the album to review here, 23 in all, although the third record is basically a 5 track jam session with some friends including Eric Clapton. Instead I will give an overview of some of the more prominent
tracks starting with the second release What Is Life which is a powerful up tempo no nonsense rock song which also became a huge hit. Wah wah is another powerhouse track, which I feel is Harrisons’ way of giving a slight jab to his Beatle mates who requested him to use a wah wah pedal during most of the Let It Be sessions the year before. (Wah wah – I dont need no wah wah ). Beware Of Darkness is one of my favourite tracks on the album, a very powerful ballad. Several of the albums’ tracks were performed live at the concert for Bangladesh a year later including this one which he shared vocals with Leon Russell. Isn’t it a pity is one of the greatest dirges of all time and will keep running through your brain long after the song has ended. Version 1 and version 2 are both included, clocking up a massive 12 minutes of pure inspiration that rips away at your emotions
like nothing else. (We break each others hearts and cause each other pain). I personally think this track would have sat very nicely on the Beatles White Album. Why couldn’t THAT have been a 3 album set??? The art of dying is another excellent up-tempo song with a bluesy feel, as is Awaiting on you all which has a very catchy riff. If not for you was a song that George got from Bob Dylan during a visit to one of Dylans’ New York recording sessions earlier in the year. Harrisons’ version is more polished than Dylan’s and received quite a bit of airplay at the time. Finally to the albums’ title track All Things Must Pass. This was definitely a close contender for the White Album in fact the Beatles recorded several takes before deciding to abandon it due to lack of space on the already overcrowded album
which they were originally trying to keep down to a single album. A spiritual thread runs throughout the whole album in some way. My Sweet Lord, (The lord is) Awaiting on you all, Hear me lord, I dig love, The art of dying and of course All things must pass. A masterpiece album from possibly the most overshadowed musician in music history. Rest in peace George … and thanks for the Pepperoni!

LIVING FOR LOVE Madonna (Live Nation/Interscope)

Pearl loved listening to Living for Love, a clean, uplifting and catchy number that will form part of Madonna’s Rebel Heart album to be released in mid to late March of this year. This release has a beat that is reminiscent of, in our opinion, Like a Prayer – that became an anthem everyone remembered. This morsel of the new album though came with the usual Madonna drama. Not only was it released too early in the songstress’s eyes, she was planning on having this drop on February 14th just in time for Valentine’s Day when everyone is Living for Love! The Twitterverse was inundated by her millions of her followers as the artwork for Rebel Heart was revealed to show the pop queens face entangled in black string. This has created a slew of mems that have translated the effect to other famous heads from Marilyn Monroe to Homer Simpson. Madonna went one step further, altering the visages of Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Bob Marley in order to describe the famous civil rights leader as “rebel hearts” like herself. For the Madonna fans this brings back the old Mag to the forefront. The beat, the sound, the clarity that we were all used to throughout the 80’s and 90’s. As a famous man in a hat would say – do yourself a favour! MELINDA RANSOM
Mesmerising, Funkadelic, Hip-Hop-JazzR&B Fusion – a double decaf with a twist of Melbourne Okay, so the editor or Pearl asked me to do a review on Hiatus Kaiyote. I thought – hey no problems at all! All I can say is listen to this morsel of neo-soul perfection when you have a day to yourself that you haven’t planned lunch, afternoon meetings or possibly a dinner…. it is just so easy to listen too. It feels like just a few minutes have passed and you realize you have missed every appointment for the day! What an uplifting & exciting experience; I really love hearing music that makes me feel and remember experiences. The funkadelic sounds of this Melbourne four piece group are just mesmerising. The electro synth-laden intro to ‘By Fire’ is nearly as attention grabbing as lead singer Nai Palm’s super-strong pulsating vocals. ‘Laputa’ puts you in a grand ball during the time of the Great Gatsby. It is full of scatty vocals and plucky bass, which complement each other superbly. The beautiful rhythms of ‘Molasses’ are very much the Hiatus Kaiyote I have now heard and love. This EP is the perfect mix of hip-hop, jazz & R&B fusion. Melbourne to the core! It’s easy to see why they have been nominated previously for a Grammy. You seriously will be wishing & pleading there was more, don’t worry there will be soon! This three track EP ‘By Fire’ is a prelude to their new album ‘Choose Your Weapon’ due out early 2015. Queens Of The Stone Age …Like Clockwork (MATADOR RECORDS) It’s been a long time between drinks for the Queens Of The Stone Age crew. The saying, “good things come to those that wait”, has never been more accurate for QOTSA fans. …Like Clockwork, their sixth studio release, is undeniably one of their best. It’s energetic, dark, moody and truly beautiful. Joshua Homme can do no wrong. His lyrics are deep and masterful only further showcasing his brilliance. The man is cool and he knows it. From the opening track, Keep Your Eyes Peeled, to the outro, …Like Clockwork, you are engulfed in thick guitar riffs, rolling drum beats and ominous keys. There isn’t a song that you feel like skipping. Albums like this are too few and far between. HADYN LEVETT
DOHENY Chris Doheny (Diamond Dog Records) Ex Geisha front man Chris Doheny presents his self-produced solo album ‘Doheny’. The album features 11 tracks including two previous singles; Gallipoli, which was released for Anzac Day this year, plus a reworking of his successful AFL Footy Show theme, More Than A Game. Opening with a new track, Oz Rock’s Glory Days, which mentions every iconic Australian rock artist you can think of, there’s a distinct Australiana theme to the album. Many of the songs were co-written with friend Ronny Addlem, who came up with some of the concepts and lyrics, while Chris fused it all together musically. The album’s singular title and cover art is a homage to Paul McCartney’s first solo album. Chris has used McCartney’s back cover art as inspiration for his front cover, replicating the photo of Paul in fur-lined coat with a baby tucked snuggly inside it. In this case, it’s Doheny’s youngest daughter. Nice work Chris! SIMON MILLS

Happy New Year! 2015 promises to be another awesome year across all the arts. Visual arts kick it all off in January with the Rotary Clubs of Sorrento and Mornington hosting their excellent annual art exhibitions raising money for charity. Frankston’s Waterfront Festival sizzles mid-month with Peninsula Arts Society and Friends up at the Mechanics Hall while beachside dishes up live music, rides, stalls and activities all located right next to the amazing artistry of Sand Sculpting Australia. Up at the Sorrento Activity Centre a new artists collective will be exhibiting and selling paintings of the peninsula and beyond. Toward the end of the month, Kingston Arts G3 Gallery in Parkdale opens a stunning sea-inspired series of paintings called Tipping Point. Fast forward to the first Saturday in February and the stars come out for the annual Peninsula Short Film Festival in Rosebud showing off talented emerging filmmakers and welcoming some of our greatest film and television stars to the Peninsula. twice, a week of researching and a week filming, but we shot most of it in Fox Studio in Sydney. representation. I said, “ Whatever that is, it sounds good.” Then, I started working. Rosebud local, actor Steve Bastoni is probably best known for his television roles in Police Rescue, Neighbours, and Prisoner, but he has acted in nearly thirty feature films as well as starring stage roles in Sydney and Melbourne theatrical productions. A passionate supporter of burgeoning acting and filmmaking talents, Bastoni established the Peninsula Short Film Festival in 2011. This year’s PSFF screens February 7. I spoke to him just prior to the premiere of his latest film, The Water Diviner. PEARL: How did you get into film? BASTONI: I was at Lynall Hall, an alterative School in Brunswick. I was asked to audition for a short film called “Skipping Class” that I had been unwittingly researching for some time. At the premiere of that 40-minute film (produced by Trout Films) I was approached by an agent and asked if I wanted

PEARL: What do you enjoy doing most, film, theatre or television? BASTONI: I like them all for different reasons…my favourite medium is theatre because of the immediacy of the audience response, but film is great because you reach a much wider audience and you’ve got the added benefit of the second take. I love film. I’ve just recently done a film that I’m really proud of called The Water Diviner. It came out on Boxing Day. PEARL: Tell us a bit about that film… BASTONI: One of the film’s writers, Andrew Anastasios found a letter from a British general who reported in his diary that he’d received a visit from a NSW farmer searching for his two sons who’d died on the fields of Gallipoli. He just turned up three years after the war looking for his boys. From that grew this incredible epic story. I play a Turkish man so 90% of my dialogue was in Turkish. I had to learn the language. I got to go to Istanbul
PEARL: What do you think are the distinguishing features of Australian film? BASTONI: We tend to tell stories about ourselves. A lot of the Aussie films are about how wonderfully quirky and oddball we are. It’s either that or the crime/cop genre – the romanticized crim genre. We seem to be stuck in that pattern. Things are changing. There is more focus on international audiences so more interesting material is coming out. PEARL: What inspired you to start the Peninsula Short Film Festival? BASTONI: I was sitting right here (in Betty’s Café, Rosebud) talking about how to engage my acting students in opportunities to practice their craft. The conversation turned to short film. “We should start a short film festival down here,” I said. I looked out and saw this carving of Fred Whittaker. I’ll take a photo of that and it can be the logo. We had our first screening in here in 2011. We did the next one at Village Green and it’s doubled in size every year.
PEARL: Why short film? BASTONI: It’s accessible to everybody. Nowadays you can shoot a quality short on a mobile phone. Film is a very expensive medium so to be able to do it with domestic equipment and still practice your craft levels the playing field. From an audience point of view there’s something for everyone. If you don’t like it, in eight minutes they’ll be something new and it’s a good way to unearth emerging talent. PEARL: You have a short film in this upcoming festival. What’s it about? BASTONI: It’s not in competition, but I was commissioned to write and direct a short film to raise awareness about binge drinking amongst young people on the Peninsula. Hopefully it will have the desired impact and get people talking about a serious problem down here. PEARL: What kind of films do you like? BASTONI: I like films that have some kind of message. I like stuff that challenges me and makes me feel something. I think it’s important to make people feel, particularly in an age where we’ve become so desensitized. It’s important to reach people on that emotional level and hopefully make people think and talk about something. I think film should beautiful. Getting to chat and mingle with patrons and supporters of a centre that is so vital to the arts and culture of Frankston and the Peninsula is a great experience. It’s fine and dandy to say anyone can make a movie, but making films is very expensive. Only people who already have money can make films. Well…this would have been true in years gone by, but now just about anyone with a smart phone or a GoPro can make a great short film. The cameras and sound quality on phones and action cameras just keep getting better. Now a passionate emerging filmmaker can make a short film using relatively inexpensive equipment and submit that work to a short film festival possibly kickstarting a career in film. A night at the Dromana Drive In is a local summer tradition and my pick from their current holiday sessions is Big Hero 6. This Disney and Marvel collaboration is a feel good action animation about a boy and a robot named Baymax. Baymax is like a modern day E.T. apart from the fact that he is a robot instead of an alien. He is just as cute and funny and just as likely to end up in the homes of people all over the world in the form of a stuffed toy.
Hiro idolises his tech obsessed older brother Tadashi who has coded Baymax into existence at university. Tadashi encourages Hiro to apply for a spot at his university by coming up with a new piece of impressive technology, which he does. Hiro attracts disaster though as evil forces try to claim his invention for personal gain and after tragedy strikes, he enlists Baymax to help him set things straight. The relationship between Hiro and Baymax is perfectly and sweetly portrayed and the supporting characters each bring something unique to the film. This film looks amazing from start to finish and I love the contrast of the precise detail of the scenes set in Tokyo compared to the simple and soft look of Baymax. One of the best things about Big Hero 6 is the visual humour created by Bamax. My kids could not stop laughing and they want to see this again and I will happily take them - and maybe even get them (or me) all the toys. If you prefer a more eclectic film program, the Shadow Electric Outdoor Cinema and Bar season is currently underway at Abbottsford Convent. What We Do in the Shadows the horror/comedy mockumentary from the Flight of the Conchords team is screening there on January 4 and 11. Or the tale of the Pappas brothers All This Mayhem is on January 29 (check my December column for a full review on this one). Pulp: A Film About Life Death and Supermarkets screens January 30 if you missed it last year and all these films are interspersed with classics and current films until April 2. For over four decades the Rotary Club of Mornington has shone a bright spotlight on art from exceptionally talented Mornington Peninsula VCE students to well-established Victorian and interstate artists in the largest visual arts show on the Peninsula. Better yet, the money raised helps local and international charities. Nancy Thurlby is feature artist. Her vibrant award-winning pastel works are spectacular, but she paints beautifully in oil and watercoulour paintings too with a free-flowing impressionist style. Travel has informed much of her work and her images capture the essence of her adventures. New this year, Art-4-Kids from January 20 to 22 will provide hour and a half guided mural painting workshops. Instructors will keep kids artistically engaged while their parents peruse the exhibition. Live demonstrations following an artist’s works from conception to completion are also interesting for both children and adults to watch. Show opens Friday, January 16 at 6:30 pm with live music from Four Seasons String Quartet, refreshments and finger foods ($35). fresh entertainment coming to waterfront festival Planning to head down to the annual Waterfront Festival in Frankston this month? Make sure you check out Fresh Entertainments youth stage! The Waterfront Festival will run on the 17th and 18th, but Fresh Entertainment has a treat in store, starting the fun early with a hardcore gig on the 16th. There will be six bands performing from 6-7pm, including Ocean Grove, Swim Through Seasons, Ever Rest, Hands of Hope, Along Shorelines, and Static Revenue. The gig is free to the public, and the stage will be sectioned off in a drug, smoke, and alcohol free area all weekend. Saturday will exhibit more chilled bands and artists, while Sunday will host various acoustic acts. The youth area will also have a headspace tent and temporary tattoos. Please note, Red Riding Hood Bikes have withdrawn their participation in this event, so there will no longer be bike demonstrations or free slushies. battle of the bands heats up The Battle of the Bands annual regional finals have now concluded, and the remaining bands must now prepare for the final battle. For the past seven months, emerging artists have been battling for the last seven months in the 2014 series of the FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands competition. The nine regional winners will progress to the final stage of the battle, where they will perform at the Grand Final at the City of Melbourne’s Moomba Festival, on March 7, 2015. Bands to compete on the day include The Quick and the Dead, The Flats, Horris Green, Revolution, The Bean Project, A-Ron and J.Jay, Requiem, The Evercold, and Ember Rain. FREEZA CREW WANTED The City of Kingston’s very own FReeZA crew, Fuse Productions, is on the lookout for young volunteers to join them in 2015. Fuse Productions is made up of a team of young volunteers aged between 14 and 25, who put on fun, exciting, safe, professionally run drug, alcohol and smoke free events. Delivering 6-8 events each year, some of the main events they host include Battle of the Bands, the St. Kilda Festival FReeZA stage, skate comps, and other cultural events. progression of the sport? MILLAR: The Skate Australia situation is dire. I hate to sound negative in an interview but to be realistic, its a group of Roller Skaters that got together and laid claim to the government funding to skateboarding. They won’t allow skateboarders to vote or influence the organisation but they leech almost a million dollars in government grants a year. Even though they have had almost $10 million in grants the past ten years they are on the brink of insolvency. They don’t know anything about skateboarding and they obviously don’t know anything about business. Last year they got halfway through their Australian Championship series for skateboarding and cancelled it. Leaving hundreds of kids and parents with useless travel plans. The artistic Rollerskaters they govern on the other hand get a fully completed Australian Championships and representatives and officials get sent to Spain to represent Australia in a World Championships there. Who has heard of artistic roller skating? Its like Ballet on roller skates. All respect to the dedicated participants but Why should artistic roller skaters control skateboarding and keep skateboarders from being able to vote in an organisation that gets close to a million dollars a year for skateboarding. It’s a rort, and taxpayers are funding it. Skate Australia rely on people not paying attention so they have flown under the radar and kept a lot of things out of the view of the skaters for 10 years. It sounds strange and hard to believe but that’s the state of Government funded Skateboarding in Australia in 2014. Hijacked by roller skaters. Skateboarders are screaming for change. PEARL: How easy is it to get access to a vert ramp these days to train on as it seems like councils are pumping out skate parks but not vert ramps and where are some of these ramps located at? MILLAR: There’s enough vert ramps for sure. I skate Prahran quite a lot. There are great vert ramps in Geelong at The Park, and The Shed in Cranbourne. Vert is a specialty niche type of skateboarding. It’s not for everyone, its underground but its definitely alive and well in Melbourne. I skate with Tas Pappas a lot.

MILLAR: A couple of my highlights was winning the CPH pro in Copenhagen and The Oi Jam in Rio De Janeiro. Two great places. I had some memorable comps in Salt Lake City, Cleveland and Baltimore in the USA too. PEARL: Do you still compete and does

Australia have a solid series of events for Vert skateboarders to compete in? MILLAR: I don’t really compete in the big vert events anymore. I would class myself as a former pro these days. I was travelling for 16 years all over the place and it was great, but I have a family now and with the big contests its a commitment. I am going to be competing at the pro bowl contests over summer (Bondi Bowlarama and the Australian Open). I like to do the occasional demo though. I still skate a lot. Almost daily at Prahran or StKilda. PEARL: Are the skateboard associations in Australia eg Skateboard Australia and Skateboard Victoria doing enough to promote Vert skateboarding and events for Vert skaters and if not, what should they be doing to push the future
PEARL: Can people who choose to skate vert and compete as a vert skater make a living out of being a pro vert skater as it seems like most of the company’s involved in skateboarding promote and spend there money on street skaters? MILLAR: You can definitely make money skating vert. It just doesn’t come from core skateboard sponsors so much. The last few months I did demos in Nanjing in China and in Alabama in the USA. Largely for crowds of non-skaters. If you are a vert skater events are where you make money. It’s a very different approach to street skating. It has good points and its bad points. Being a vert skater you have to do a lot of contests. Contests sometimes spin street skaters out a bit, but I think they are fun. Once you get over the fact you won’t do well at every single one and you realise that a contest is just travelling to go skateboarding before a party they become a lot of fun. I like to skate a bit of everything. To me vert is the most challenging. Its a commitment. I think all parts of skating are equally as difficult but with vert there is no half stepping, even if you are really good you have to do it all the time to stay on point. Overall though I really like all forms of skating.
PEARL: For any one keen on getting in to vert skating fill us in on the board set up they should look at having to make it easier to skate one of those big beasts (eg board/truck & wheel size)? MILLAR: Anyone keen for vert should try find other mates that like skating vert. That’s a big thing that’s gonna help you progress. A big board with wide trucks and 15-inch wheelbase will make it easier too, as will big wheels and good bearings. I also like to have a board that is stiff and brand new grip tape. That helps heaps too. PEARL: What are your favourite tricks to do on vert and what are some of the tricks you are currently working on that you have not stomped yet? MILLAR: I really enjoy trying to style out airs at the moment, and going big. I haven’t really been working on so many tricks. Working on mad tricks is a big commitment; the level of skating is so high that to really push it you are going to be sessioning the same trick for a few sessions. I tried some kick flip 540s last night. Id like to be confident enough to go for that one soon, but it would have to be the right day. PEARL: Over the last couple of decades Australia has been home to several of the worlds best vert skaters including the Pappas Brothers, Jason Ellis, Adam Luxford and your self, how is the future looking as far as the next generation of ripping Aussie vert skaters and where do they stand on an international level? MILLAR: I have a little guy at my house at the moment Keegan Palmer. He is 12. He is phenomenal. Both at bowls and vert. There are others too like Luke Russell from Wollongong. PEARL: Recently you have been doing a lot of MC’N at events in Oz and around the globe, is that now becoming a job and if some one’s keen on having a world champion/coolest cat in the industry like your self MC there event how can they track you down? MILLAR: I’ve been doing a bit of MCing. Its a lot of fun. I have a little event company called Shredability. I do a lot of kids skate comps but last year I did a few bigger pro comps as well as a snowboard comp at Thredbo for Oakley. PEARL: Renton before we rap this interview up, tell us what is that keeps you skating vert and skateboarding in general? MILLAR: Skateboarding is my life. Actually it’s the third best thing behind my family and my friends. It’s something I have to do. I don’t know why I do it. I think PEARL: Any advice for kids who want to get in to vert skating? MILLAR: Stick to it. Skate everything, and if you love skateboarding it will love you back. PEARL: Any one you would like to thank? Play it safe at the skate park On the Peninsula and all around Australia councils have finally realised that skate parks are essential to there community’s and almost every town has one or is planning on building one in the future. Due to these fantastic facility’s progression in skateboarding, scooters and BMX is much more rapid and with this progression comes the down side and that is the injury’s and unless your wearing safety gear including helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards it’s only a matter of time until you get hurt. It has long been considered among teenagers and adults who skate etc that wearing safety gear including helmets is not cool, but I can tell you straight up the sound of a human head hitting the concrete with out a helmet on, is the most un coolest thing I have ever herd and over the last couple of months I have seen it happen several times and some of these kids were good skaters and are now to scared to skate or are still
suffering from there injury’s. You may just be the best skater etc in the park but that’s not going to make you bullet proof! as it’s not always your fault when you fall and get injured because most of the time you are sharing the park with kids of different ability levels and if a beginner kicks his board in front of you or a little scooter kid cuts you off there’s a good chance your going down and with out the protective gear on there’s also a chance you may end up in the emergency waiting room of your nearest hospital. Here are a few tips to help keep you or your kids safe in the skate park: # Were safety gear including helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. # If you have kids make sure you supervise them and teach them to wait there turn and give way to other riders
(the skate park is not a child minding service!). # keep an eye out for rocks, bolts and any thing else that may be on the ground at the skate park as it can lock your wheels up and throw you head first (most parks are barley ever swept!). # Give way to other riders and only drop in when its safe to do so, making sure that there’s no chance that the little scooter kid below you is going to cross in front of you the moment you drop! # Before you start skating etc at the skate park watch which way people flow through the park as every park is different, this way you will learn not to cross directly in front of the path of people. Have fun and remember prevention is better than the cure!

WHAT’S A POP PUNK? Welcome to 2015, last year was a wild ride for us here at PEARL’s alternate section, we spent time hunting through gig line-ups and dealing with huge companies to bring you a section of PEARL that would introduce you to the back alleys of modern day music, in the tiny little nook where instruments are pushed to their limits and vocalists risk their vocal cords to bring you something different from the techno and hip hop that musicians are spilling out these days. Our section was one of the 6 people to interview Dream Theatre – arguably the biggest progressive metal act… in the world, we were one of the first publications to bring you a review of The Smith Street Bands album- Throw me in the river, we bought you interviews with upcoming local talent and stories about those who have gone strong for years, we welcomed bands to the scene and farewelled a few. Taking the alternate was born, and this year we only want to go bigger than we have before! Expect to see more interviews, album reviews, suggested bands and songs you should be hearing than ever before, each month we will specialise in a genre or event along with our general
genre mix, you’ll learn almost everything there is to know. So sit back, grab yourself a coffee and have a read of our pop punk issue, pepper your angus! Let’s kick off 2015 with one of the genres everyone needs to know, pop punk. Originating in mid-1970’s pop un is a genre believed to be birthed by The Ramones, who combines their love of rock and bubble-gum pop to birth a genre that has lived on for 4 decades. Pop punk was more popularized in the 1990’s and this year saw the birth of record labels specializing in pop punk music, among these, Epitaph records, who now days retail some of the biggest powerhouses of pop punk music, including Sleeping With Sirens who aren’t far off 3 million Facebook fans. During pop punks history, there has been the birth of many great bands, and with that comes many great songs, so in order for you to properly appreciate the poetic styling’s of songs that are centred around pizza, hometowns and friends, here is PEARLS list of punk pop to add to your collection. Just Do Your Thing - An Interview with Harbours A collaboration of established musicians with experience, credibility and knowledge of the local music scene, pop-punk band Harbours have currently been making waves within the music scene throughout Victoria. With a combination of talent from hardcore acts such as In Elegance, Sierra and Ocean Grove, the boys from Harbours and their enthusiastic exterior make it easy to see why its only a matter of time until their name is spread throughout Australia. Originally starting as a bit of fun for vocalist Tory, who was eager to venture into recording a pop-punk song with a friend. Through the enjoyment of making that style of music Tory utilized his connections with fellow musicians to form what now is Harbours. The genre of pop-punk was something Tory always had a vast interest in despite his past in heavier styled bands, this long lasting passion for a very different genre of music is what brought him and his fellow band mates together and is the foundation

for then energy Harbours bring to their music an live shows. So what kind of acts influence this up and coming pop-punk band? As well as the usual headlining acts in the world of pop-punk such as The Story So Far, Knuckle Puck etc. Harbours draw lots of inspiration from bands you have adopted a much more seasoned and alternative sound such as Balance & Composure, Citizen and Superheaven.
Demonstrating a genuine love for not only what they do but also those around them Harbours bring back the lost feeling of a true D.I.Y band relatable to those around them.
With these basic yet cherish able characteristic I can almost see we will continue to see Harbours Just Doing Their Thing. JESSE LANE
With a heavy emphasis on the phrase just do your thing (a piece of advice Tory gave to any up and coming bands) it is easy to see how this 5 piece are held in such a high regard despite being a relatively new band. Their modest approach and good -heartedly nature make it easier to connect with the music. In fact bass player/backup vocalist Kyle O’Shea had never sung properly in public until their first show, and by the support of his band he was able to sing effortlessly. Just doing his thing.

Spotify is actually where I discovered The Vanns, the first song I ever heard from them was Guilty Love and I instantly fell in love with their sound, I’ve been a fan of indie music for a very long time and eventually you just get used to the tone of music they produce, the set apart thing for The Vanns is their upbeat poppy way of delivering music, James Vann has vocal genius that I’m in love with, and along with this the whole band has worked out how to perfectly give every instrument space to be heard, I’m yet to find a song from them where an instrument is unheard. If you haven’t heard this band yet, listen to Operator, How It Used To Be and my personal favourite song

Despite 3 national tours, playing HOMEBAKE and Party In The Paddock and opening for huge Aussie acts like Kingswood, Sticky Fingers, The Griswolds and North East Party House (just to name a few) The Vanns are still quite a young band. The boys have been together for almost 3 years now and it doesn’t look like The Vanns party will be coming to an end for a while. Their newest song Operator has a definite groove to it and is bound to become exceptionally popular, very quickly, the delivery of the song overall paired with the catchy as hell lyrics make for a hit song that I will definitely be blasting through the car on long drives. Been jamming Trophy Eyes new album “Mend, Move on.” a lately so my favourite song at the moment is Penfold State Forest 8. What’s something about the band not a lot of people would know? We listen to only Barry White at band practice 9. What do you want to achieve on your next tour/show? Well we haven’t actually toured yet so that’s a goal in itself, but for our first tour we’d obviously like to achieve mad amounts of exposure 10. Who do you feel is doing the best in your genre? professional DJ since his early teens, musical ambassador and a veteran of acid house and a champion of techno – you name it, Carl’s been there and done it – never losing sight of his passions – playing music, breaking tunes, spreading love and celebrating life.
It was at the age of 15 that Carl was given a set of turntables and began working as a mobile DJ. Disco was the first music that captivated him but by the early 80s Cox had moved on to playing the same music as other young London DJs – rare groove, New York hip-hop and electro. He was perfectly placed to hear Chicago house music in its earliest forms, and when the epic ‘Acid Trax’ by Phuture (a.k.a. DJ Pierre) came out in early ‘87. As a founder of the sound, Carl rode the exploding British rave scene. He played the opening night of Danny Rampling’s legendary Shoom, co-promoted The Project with Paul Oakenfold, held a residency at the Zap Club in Brighton and at the Sunrise rave in 1988, hooked up a third turntable for his dawn-breaking set, got 15,000 kids back on their feet, and established a personal rep for three-deck wizardry. The next step was to make music, and Carl’s 1991 debut single for Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label, ‘I Want You,’ gave him a top 30 hit and a Top of the Pops appearance. Two more singles also made the charts. But Carl was a reluctant pop star and as the masses moved onto fluffy house and trance, and the hardcore created jungle, Cox retreated into the club world that had nurtured him and instead embraced the underground sounds of techno. “Techno drives home somewhere,” he says of his core music. “It takes you to an element of surprise, not knowing where you’re going. It’s scary but wonderful at the same time.”

“Jon and I thought it was time,” says Carl. “We’d been working hard the last few years to get Intec back to the forefront of Techno. We have a great roster, with very talented DJs that deserve recognition. This is our way of celebrating the label’s success, showcasing some of our artists, and of course putting out some amazing tracks.” Carl’s legendary Ibiza residency also continues to break boundaries. Celebrating an astounding 12 consecutive years at Space, Carl and Safehouse Management have built their weekly residency into one of the Island’s most popular nights. Marking a change in direction from traditional Ibiza parties, Carl and his Space revolution has always been acclaimed for its adventurous and forward-thinking line-ups, musical direction and state of the art production. This, along with Carl’s highly involved and passionate role as promoter, programmer and host, is why each year has seen a growth and progression from the last, both in terms of quality and size. “We have a successful night because we just batten down the hatches and stick to what we do best, which is give value for money,” explains Carl. “People come back to us, as they’re big believers in our brand. Also Space is a great club, they’ve spent a lot of money
on it, and it’s just getting better and better.” All this and still Carl’s ‘Global’ radio show is still breaking records, now reaching over 16-million listeners worldwide and syndicated across 60 terrestrial FM, Satellite and DAB stations throughout 35 countries, making him one of the most important broadcasters on the planet. Carl formed his own label, Intec Records, in 1999, scoring a series of underground hits and enjoying eight years at the forefront of electronic music. After its closure in 2006, Carl was still inundated with new music, finally deciding to re-launch the label as Intec Digital at the start of 2010. It’s been a triumphant return, thanks to exclusives from some of the biggest names in techno. “The label couldn’t be going better,” says Carl. “It’s great to be back at the helm discovering underground DJs.” Intec Digital was also the home for Carl’s 6th studio album, ‘All Roads Lead To the Dancefloor,’ released to critical acclaim in late 2011 on state-of-the-art, selfupdating USB technology. The USB offered far more than a conventional album, showcasing a range of styles across its 20+ tracks whilst also giving fans access to everything from interviews & behind the

with him being a DJ and entertainment agent, I used to run around his nightclubs during the day at only about 5 or 6 years of age, throughout the years I’ve been involved with his company in various ways. I’ve been DJ’ing for about 3 years now and now hold a residency at Tramp Saturdays – but have also previously run a muck at few of the watering holes both local and interstate. What else do you do apart from DJing? I’ve just finished my Graphic Design course at Swinburne and have been running my own graphics business for the past two years and have done artwork for a lot of clubs in Melbourne. I also work for PEARL magazine which started back in 2012 – starting with basic design work whilst I was still in school and then I moved onto creating the BPM section once I had got more involved in the club scene... or was legally allowed to anyway. In August I launched my own House and Techno record label with a close friend (Benny Mac), and this was
would have liked to, I have been looking forward to the year finishing and finally getting some tunes polished off. Have just finished a colab with Benny Mac ‘Close To You’ featuring vocals from Alex Latham, and have probably another 4 or 5 tracks sitting at a pretty much finished stage which I’m really looking forward to putting out. What’s on for 2015? So far… I’ve been locked in to play Rainbow Serpent with the fellas from the Welcome To The Jungle Themed Camp, and the few interstate gigs locked in for Feb in Adelaide and Sydney. If all goes to plan I should hopefully be moving to Ibiza to work over there for the summer season, from May through ‘til October, where I would be doing a range of things: playing, helping hand at club events and boat parties, event photography, graphic design and online marketing - just in the process of going through interviews and stuff at the moment, fingers crossed hey. How many Baroccas per day? None, more bevs.

With just two decades of air under his belt this young man hasn’t wasted a breath. He is a man of many talents, graphic designer, dj, producer, label owner, part-time alco’ and a businessman, the only thing stopping him is the fact he can’t clone himself to get more out of the day. Holding a residency at Tramp and gracing the airwaves at Kiss FM - his poison is House and Techno. Last year he launched his own label, Recovery Collective which has recently put out its 14th release and is currently holding the number one title (and has been for a few consecutive weeks) on Beatport’s minimal charts with the tune Three, Two, One. This month we spoke to the Peninsula’s very own Jiay Mills about his never ending battery pack and how many Baroccas he does per day. How did you get into the industry and start DJing? My Dad’s been in the entertainment industry for over 20 years. I grew up
the birth of Recovery Collective. A label comprising of quality undiscovered music from up and coming artists that deserve more recognition. We have just signed our 17th release, from not only local and national artists but also over the seas in Brazil, Ukraine, Italy and Germany. We have had a few releases go well in the charts. At the moment we have held the #1 slot on Beatport Minimal Charts for about a month now with Sonny Moko’s release ‘Three Two One’ which is going really strong, and will be releasing a pretty solid remix EP soon featuring mixes by Prosdo, TomNTys, Less Is Moar & City Keys. Who influences you musically? On a large scale, international artists like Huxley, Eats Everything, Catz ‘n Dogz, Format B, Thomas Schumacher, Booka Shade, Maceo Plex, Boris Brejcha, Alex Stein, Oliver Huntemann and Groove Delight - but I also think that a few of the big local House & Techno vikings also play a pretty big part. I have been getting into a bit of Kalya Scintilla and Opiuo too but they’re on a completely different page haha. Any stand out gigs from last year? My number one gig from last year would have to be one of the few Earthcore sets I got to play, probably my solo set Friday arvo when everyone was still fresh, hadn’t smashed it too hard (yet) and the weather was perfect – playing at outdoor festivals is mental, the vibe and environment are something different. Either that or my set from Beyond The Valley on New Years, I ended up playing about 8 hours over the course of the week which was pretty fun. I also played my first international gig in December: Ultraglow Bali, to a pretty much full main arena at Sky Garden - not sure of the venue capacity but I’m pretty sure there was a few thousand there and the most I’ve ever played to. Also supported artists such as Seth Troxler, Thomas Jack, Cause & Affect, FiveAm and more… What will you getting up to this year, producing some of your own tracks? Between being so busy with the label, the magazine, all my graphics work, a full time uni course, djing and getting loose whenever I get the chance - I haven’t really had much time to dive headfirst into production as much as I

Min&Mal, Orkestrated & Delayz - Rage (Original Mix) Not quite out yet, but the Soundcloud preview had me head bumping instantly. With a chunky electric guitar filled build up to an insanely smooth and spacious drop, this track definitely delivers the goods. Had to replay this track as soon as it was finished, will be sure to add this to the collection when this rager drops. Chet Faker - I’m Into You (Monkeyneck Remix) One from earlier last year that I wish I had discovered sooner, an awesome remix of a piece from Melbourne’s own Chet Faker, this number is one to sit back and relax to. This track uses a great mix of plucks with a superb piano melody that will send a shiver down your spine. Jan Fleck – Turin (Original Mix) One to blast through your subs, this is a truly heavy track with an awesome underground feel. Jan Fleck creates an awesome sounding swingy techno tune, with long-lived drops that have great progression to take you on a journey. If you love fat kicks, off beat rides and quality percussion then this is one to check out! Luix Spectrum & Whisperer - The Kids Want Techno (Diatek Remix) Another techno track, this one is seriously hard hitting. Like something straight out of a Rob Zombie movie, this one really brings in an evil atmosphere and will make you pull a serious bass face. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, but all you terror lovers need to give this a look. Telepopmusik - Smile (Natural High Remix)

Over the last month or so leading up to Beyond The Valley, here in at PearlHQ we have been building up the vibe in the office and smashing some of the artist’s recent mix tapes leading up to the event… this one in particular raised a few eyebrows. One of my all time favourite tracks, this is one song that can enhance any mood you’re in, especially great for those kick back summer days. Beautiful vocals mixed in with a punchy kick and snare and a great baseline, and with plenty of underlying synths and subtle but effective melodies, this song will really fill your head with music.
