The Leadership 7: How to put leadership into action By Mark Anderson, author of The Leadership Book 2/e

Leadership1 You must have a motivating vision for your team and its goals. It must be capable of being explained clearly and you must be prepared to take the time and trouble to explain it to your team — if they don’t see you selling it, they won’t take it seriously

Leadership2 You must turn your vision of what you want to become into a clear set of strategies — i.e. a series of planned actions which all your team support across their various functions.

Leadership3 You must be self-aware that setting your vision and framing supporting priorities, together with ensuring you have the right people in your team, will always be your fundamental priorities and you must guard against being diverted from them.

Leadership4 You must think through the selection of your leadership team extraordinarily carefully. These are the people with whom you will spend more time than any other in your professional, as well as personal, life. Make sure you have the right jobs first; don’t find jobs for the people you have.

Leadership5 Your leadership approach must be underpinned by a fundamental humility which admits that in their own roles each of your team is more skilled than yourself; and which recognises that your expertise is in drawing out success in others.

Leadership6 None of Leadership1–5 will be credible unless your staff really believe your intent and commitment is serious, so your sixth task is to set out your approach, and set it out again, and again, and again. And to keep on setting out until you feel you have said it too often — only then will you begin to have said enough!

Leadership7 The world is being revolutionised by digital technologies. You must become a digital leader - understand how digital has the power to reshape everything you do!
