WELCOME Did you know that the Peccadillo Pictures logo is based on a real cat? Her name was Bam Bam and she lived with Kahloon and Tom, the owners of the company. In the early days of Peccadillo Pictures she would hang around the office and help out in the general running of the business and always loved to have her picture taken. She died just before her 23rd birthday but will always be remembered in the logo designed by Steve Edwards back in the year 2000. INTE RVIE W WITH DAR R E N STE I N Where did the idea for G.B.F. come from? George Northy, the writer, had read an article in Teen Vogue about how it was in fashion for teenage girls to have a G.B.F. as the new must-have accessory. He thought it was such an absurd idea yet a great ‘way in’ to a teen comedy. How did you cast the film and get such a huge variety of recognisable stars? I wanted the film to reference teen films through the ages but also to be self-referential about pop culture at large. The idea of having Karen from Will and Grace playing the gay-obsessed mum made perfect sense. Michael J Willett who plays “Tanner” had been Toni Collette’s son’s boyfriend “Lionel” in The United States of Tara and he was such an endearing and engaging presence on that show, and it was evident he could hold his own as a lead in a film. With a film called “G.B.F.” sexuality IS an issue and I’m pleased the two leads are actually gay. Natasha Lyonne was in But I’m a Cheerleader and American Pie so it made sense to have her as the teacher and Rebecca Gayheart was in my film Jawbreaker, so I got to pay a little homage to that. George Northy wrote the role of “’Shley” with Andrea Bowen in mind. It’s such a big ensemble and I wanted every role to be memorable. Can you tell us a little about the soundtrack? I grew up with the John Hughes soundtracks of the 80s - Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful and I loved Clueless in the 90s. A teen movie soundtrack is part of the fabric of experiencing the world of that adolescent genre - I remember I was all about The Smiths and The Cure growing up, getting lost in their music. I wanted the music in G.B.F. to reference the 80s and 90s, but also feel current and future thinking. I was going for a certain timelessness to the soundtrack. With teen films, the music holds so much of the emotion and nostalgia. In the end it perfectly captured the cheekiness and youth culture of the ‘G.B.F.’ moniker. I’m thrilled we got
4
INTE RVIE W
a soundtrack deal as it’s increasingly rare for indie films. I’m hoping people watch the film then download the soundtrack from iTunes.
At its heart, G.B.F has an important message; what do you feel that is? The most overt message is that people are not accessories - not just gay people but anyone. We are all outsiders at the heart of it and especially in high school, we’re all in the closet about something. The bigger message is the existence of the movie itself. G.B.F. is a mainstream teen comedy with a gay protagonist. The gay character is no longer relegated to the sidelines. I’m sure some will find the film to have more of an “indie” or “cult” aesthetic, but I always intended it to be geared to anyone who likes a fun teen comedy. G.B.F is really hilarious and has some amazing jokes – what are your favourites? I love Caprice’s “high-speed DSL’s” line. Of course anything with Megan Mullally. Taylor Frey is hysterical as Topher from the moment he sees Tanner, you know something is going down. I love his “cat that ate the canary” look when he and ‘Shley have him over for dinner. I love all the sexual innuendo, especially when it comes from adorable dolled-up Fawcett at the party. George and I have seen the film a hundred times by now and we still giggle and have our own private laughs. People have said it gets better upon multiple viewings and that’s always a good thing.

Heady passions of unrequited adolescent love collide with sinister overtones of jealousy, lust and envy. “Single White Female meets The Page Turner” - Variety
OLLIE ON CL AIRE OF THE MOON As a fan of Nicole Conn’s more recent romantic outings, ELENA UNDONE and A PERFECT ENDING, I thought it would be a good idea to jump shoulder pad first into the 90s with her first drama, CLAIRE OF THE MOON. What I wasn’t prepared for was the delicate and tender love story between two women who find themselves. Trisha Todd plays Claire Jabrowski, a famous author who attends an all-female writers retreat. Her roommate, Dr. Noel Benedict (Karen Trumbo) is a psychiatrist and author who quickly captures the imagination of Claire. When emotions start to run high between the women, they both break their own boundaries and enter into a passionate relationship, fuelled by curiosity and self-discovery. What Conn does remarkably is represent strong, independent women – it doesn’t necessarily matter whether they are lesbians or not but she understands the female psyche in a way that few other filmmakers are able to. When representation of lesbian life was minimal and stereotypical, Conn was breaking boundaries and making a name for herself. She creates stunning atmospheres in the most beautiful of locations that make her stories feel relevant and sensual for all audiences. What CLAIRE OF THE MOON (along with Conn’s other films) symbolises is a realistic love, something that audiences can aspire to. CLAIRE OF THE MOON played with my emotions but also made me want to get a perm. S TA F F P I C K S

DOMINIQUE & L AU R I E How did you come up with the story of Margarita? We were very interested in telling a story about a woman being taken for granted, not just for her work, but as a person. And we wanted to explore a social injustice that countless women in Canada and throughout the world face every day - that of being exploitable simply by circumstance of birth and lack of access to opportunity. The character, Margarita is a proud lesbian and she would challenge anyone that was racist. But class/hierarchy is a more mysterious issue because it is harder to identify. The family in the film is not racist at all – they are liberal, socially conscious Canadians, but they are classist in the way they let Margarita run their home, but fail to see her situation and her true contribution to their family. If it wasn’t for the despair of the daughter, Mali, I’m not sure they would have ever confronted their behaviour. Through Mali, we wanted to explore the notion that openness to the diversity of sexuality is not a determining factor in the development of a child’s own sexuality. It’s clear that Mali has
12
INTE RVIE W
an innocent crush on Margarita. It’s also clear that it’s not threatening to her. We wanted to portray a teenager who hadn’t had a sexual experience, but whose first would be free of any imposed values or fear of judgment. She really becomes a representation of the childhood many of us would have chosen for ourselves. Margarita struggles to create a family for herself - to simply be valued in the same way that she values those around her. But, class distinctions and social ignorance seem to always be in the way of true fulfilment. How did you cast the film and find your stunning lead, Nicola Correia Damude? We saw Nicola Correia Damude on stage in Toronto and were blown away by her stage presence. At the time we had been talking about doing a film about a nanny living without legal status in Canada. We wanted to explore what it is like to live in Toronto without documentation (and the social support system that comes with it). We also wanted to explore the other side of the equation and look at the families who employ and in many cases (knowingly or not) exploit these workers. We were fascinated by the concept of the “class” structure that still exists in a society that is legislatively “class-free”. We wrote the role of Margarita for Nicola and we loved working with her and we hope to work with her on our next film. The story is very close to home for yourselves, what was your motivation in telling it? Twenty years ago, Dominique was forced to leave Canada as she’d been a “tourist” for just a little too long. It was very difficult to be separated for eight months as she waited in France for her Canadian landed immigrant status. If we had met today, things would have been easier. We could have gotten married, for example, and avoided a lot of bureaucracy. That’s such an important advancement in basic human rights and, regardless of how the current Canadian administration seeks to diminish the power of the Civil Marriage Act, the fact is it’s undiminishable. We wanted to celebrate that in this film. What were the most fun bits to film? Filming “Margarita” was a wonderful experience. We had a fantastic cast, crew and co-writer. We feel blessed to have been able to produce a very low-budget feature that was a good experience to make. Having said that, the weather was freezing and even thought the hot tub scene looked fun to the audience, the actors were either boiling or getting frost bite. The actors were always good sports, but production is always a challenge because of the gruelling schedule – long days and very short nights. Editing is much more fun.

VICTOR ON G I V E M E YO U R H A N D Give Me Your Hand was an essential film in drawing me into European LGBT cinema. I remember back in my hometown in Taiwan, there wasn’t a variety of films I could easily access. During my first year in London when I was a film student, the diverse collection in the video library gave me a gateway to different aspects of cinema, especially LGBT films, which has always been one of my number one of my interests. I am not embarrassed to admit that the two cute twin faces on the cover got my attention when I saw Give Me Your Hand on the shelves. In fact, the film goes much deeper than the initial attraction of the cover (huge credit to the design, nonetheless). With the striking cinematography capturing the beautiful landscape, the experience is a life episode accompanied by the twin brothers travelling to their mother’s funeral. Along the way they encounter sex, violence and tears, which layer and strengthen the bond between the two brothers. There is a sense of fragility, yet also indestructibility – like the subtle line between love and hate. This is not a film that would cost you a box of tissues or leave you with a thrilling or uplifting moment after the film ends. However, it will take a bit of space in your heart forever.
