THEATER
Coursework in the dramatic arts includes improvisation and theater games, as well as instruction in a variety of acting techniques and formal scene study. Extracurricular performance opportunities include a play each term, two public-speaking contests, and a one-act series performed by the Honors Theater Ensemble in the spring. In addition, students may choose to work behind the scenes as assistant directors, stage managers, light and soundboard technicians, and set crew members. Unless otherwise indicated, all events take place in the William Mount-Burke Theater. Fall Play: Romeo and Juliet
By William Shakespeare. In the streets of Verona another brawl breaks out among the servants of the dueling noble families, the Capulets and the Montagues. This heated, ongoing feud sets the stage for two star-crossed lovers to become embroiled in a tragic love story for the ages. Romeo and Juliet transcends space and time as it continues to capture our imaginations over 400 years after its first production. Thursday, Friday, Saturday October 30, 31 and November 1, 2014, 7:30 p.m. $10 reserved seating; free to Peddie students, faculty and staff. Freshman Musical
The freshman musical is designed to provide an additional performance opportunity for our youngest theater students. Unlike our other theatrical productions which are extracurricular, all rehearsals happen during the regularly scheduled class period in which the ensemble meets with the directors and choreographer to prepare the show. Their efforts culminate in a one-night performance for the entire Peddie community. Past freshman musicals include Seussical, Once On This Island, Disney’s High School Musical, and Godspell. Friday, November 14, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Free for everyone. Declamation Contest
Peddie’s 147th annual Declamation Contest features short monologues, presented and judged in friendly competition. Thursday, January 8, 2015, 7:30 p.m.
Winter Musical: Hairspray
Music by Marc Shaiman, Lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Based on the 1988 John Waters film. It is 1962 in Baltimore, a time of great social upheaval in America as the Civil Rights movement is gaining momentum, and the lovable Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream becomes reality, Tracy is transformed from outcast to star. She must use her newfound fame to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, to win the affection of her heartthrob, Link Larkin, and finally, to integrate a television network. This coming-of-age story about the underdog coming from behind is ultimately a tale of self-acceptance and equality for all. Winner of eight Tony Awards, Hairspray is a family-friendly, bop-until-you-drop musical offering laughter, romance and a strong moral compass. Thursday, Friday, Saturday February 19, 20 and 21, 2015, 7:30 p.m. $10 reserved seating; free to Peddie students, faculty and staff. J. Walter Reeves Speaking Contest
In the 111th annual J. Walter Reeves Speaking Contest, students compose speeches of approximately five minutes on topics of their choice. The speakers are judged on their writing, creativity and delivery. Thursday, April 2, 2015, 7:30 p.m. Honors Theater Ensemble: One-Acts
Advanced theater students collaborate in order to produce, direct, design and act in a festival of one-act plays. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday April 29, 30 and May 1, 2015, 8:00 p.m. Spring Play: Lend Me A Tenor
By Ken Ludwig. This rip-roaring farce set in 1934 at the Cleveland Grand Opera House centers around the anticipated arrival of Tito Merelli, “Il Stupendo” — the greatest tenor of his generation, as he prepares for a smashing, and ridiculously ill-fated, performance of Otello. Winner of three Tony Awards and four Drama Desk awards, Lend Me A Tenor is a madcap, screwball comedy. Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, 2015, 7:30 p.m. $10 reserved seating; free to Peddie students, faculty and staff.
MUSIC At Peddie, students may participate in a variety of performing ensembles including the Chorus and Symphonic Orchestra as well as smaller instrumental groups such as The Pulse (a jazz ensemble), the Chamber Orchestra, and the Percussion Ensemble (for anything you shake, scrape or strike, including garbage cans!). Singers may audition to take part in one of three smaller ensembles which emphasize a cappella singing — the acaFellas (an allmale ensemble), the Treblemakers (an all-female ensemble) and the Peddie Singers (a mixed group). In addition to electives in music theory, history and performance practice, we offer private lessons on all instruments and voice, taught in private studio rooms in the Swig Arts Center. Students present a major concert each term in the William MountBurke Theater and perform at many school and community events including the Winter Musical and Vespers, Peddie’s annual holiday celebration.

VISUAL ARTS At the end of each term, all students enrolled in visual arts classes exhibit their best artwork throughout the expansive Swig Arts Center. Friends, family, and faculty join these student artists at the opening night receptions to celebrate the drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, digital graphics, videos and installations that fill the hallways and Mariboe Gallery. These vibrant exhibitions reflect the philosophy of our department which encourages students to develop thoughtful, complex ideas and then to hone the technical skills necessary to express these visions. The visual arts faculty members are working artists themselves, which offers the Peddie student many mentors upon which to model a creative life of art making.

MARIBOE GALLERY Unless otherwise indicated, receptions will be held on opening night from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. with an artist talk at 7:00 p.m. Architect Bob Hillier Friday, September 5 – October 1, 2014 J. Robert “Bob” Hillier, FAIA, founded Hillier Architecture in 1966. In 2007, Hillier merged with RMJM of Scotland, creating the third largest strictly-architectural firm in the world. The Hillier firm has received over 300 state, national and international design awards, many of them projects on which Hillier himself was the lead designer. In 2009, Mr. Hillier established Studio Hillier, a new type of architectural firm based on land use strategy and execution. This new firm focuses on community need, neighborhood enhancement, and opportunities for architectural excellence while providing reasonable returns to investors. Hillier has served on Peddie School’s Board of Trustees since 1981. Opening reception TBA. Sculptor Patrick Strzelec Wednesday, October 8 – November 5, 2014 Patrick Strzelec makes abstract sculpture with an incredibly diverse range of materials — aluminum, ceramic, epoxy, plaster, steel, and wood, to name a few. His mastery of these materials, as well as his unique ability to transform them into highly charismatic — albeit somewhat inscrutable — objects and forms has earned him numerous awards in sculpture, including the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship; the Ballingkillings Project in Ireland; the Rome Prize, Rome, Italy; a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; and numerous New Jersey State Council for the Arts grants. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Strzelec is the former Rudolph Arnheim Lecturer in Sculpture at Harvard University. Peddie Faculty Show Friday, December 5 – 12, 2014 In addition to teaching a wide variety of visual arts electives at Peddie, Rachel Aisenson, Andrew Harrison, Claudio Middleton and Cathy Watkins maintain their own studio practices and exhibit their own works regionally and nationally. This group exhibition of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture and video will present some of their works made in the past few years. Photographer Scott Baxter ’75 Wednesday, January 21 – February 18, 2015 Scott Baxter has been a professional photographer for over twenty-five years. His work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico, and Japan. He has earned numerous awards for his commercial and editorial work. Philanthropy has been an integral part of Mr. Baxter’s photographic career; he has worked with many non-profit organizations, including the United Way, the Arizona Foundation for Blind Children, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and the Salvation Army. Mr. Baxter is currently working on two long-term documentary photographic projects: the “100 Years 100 Ranchers Project,” in partnership with Through Each Others’ Eyes; and photographing the indigenous peoples of Chiapas, Mexico, for The Peace and Justice Center. Multimedia Artist Gina Siepel Wednesday, March 25 – April 15, 2015 Gina Siepel’s diverse works explore the relationship between process, performance, and the construction of identity, connecting disparate American ideologies, from Thoreauvian ethics to Queer theory to the “self-reliance” championed by the political Right. These investigations draw on the work of such iconic 19th- and early 20th-century American thinkers as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John James Audubon, Winslow Homer, and Emma Goldman. Siepel integrates her conceptual inquiry with a deep engagement in craftsmanship and a love of materials.
CULTURAL EVENTS The Cultural Events series brings professional musicians, actors and dancers to campus for a workshop with select student artists and an evening performance for the entire Peddie community. von Grey Friday, September 19, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Atlanta-based indie-alt-folk group von Grey has checked off more things on the proverbial band wish list in the past year than many bands do in a decade. National TV? Check. They’ve appeared on “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Conan,” NBC’s “Rock Center with Brian Williams,” and CNN’s “Road Warriors.” Glowing press? Check. The harmony-laced foursome has been called everything from an “Americana masterpiece” to simply “crazytalented” by the media. von Grey comprises dual lead singer-songwriters Annika (violin, banjo, guitar, keys) and Fiona (guitar, violin, percussion), Petra (keys, lap steel guitar, electronic percussion, background vocals), and Kathryn (cello, bass pedals, mandolin, keys, background vocals). The group of four classically-trained sisters has accomplished all of this without the help of a record label and before their 20th birthdays. Alexander Kariotis Friday, December 5, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Weaving timeless arias with soaring rock melodies and a multi-octave voice, Kariotis mixes opera and original rock ‘n’ roll into music that will leave you exhilarated and breathless. On his debut CD, Alexander enlisted the iconic jazz saxophonist David Sanborn to join him in a beautiful jazz/opera fusion song called Ho Bisogno Di Te. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels from the super rap group Run-DMC also joins Alexander in a hip hop/opera collaboration of a remix of Alexander’s original composition called Vesti la Giubba – Hide the Tears. Classically trained, Alexander has studied with a Who’s Who of vocal masters, from Arrigo Pola (the late Luciano Pavarotti’s voice teacher, Modena, Italy), Gianni Raimondi (La Scala, Italy), as well as Dan Marek, John Wustman and Nico Castel (Metropolitan Opera). Empanada For A Dream Friday, March 27, 2015, 7:30 p.m. Written & Performed by Juan Francisco Villa, Directed by Alex Levy terraNOVA Collective presents: Empanada For A Dream — a haunting love song to the Lower East Side. Juan Francisco Villa’s return to the neighborhood of his childhood is a dangerous and hilarious tale about growing up by getting out.
