GIVING BACK MOVES PEDDIE

FORWARD

“THE COMMUNITY AT PEDDIE CHALLENGED ME TO BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF MYSELF. IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS INSTITUTION THAT I HAVE MADE IMPORTANT STRIDES TOWARDS BEING A BETTER STUDENT, FRIEND AND GLOBAL CITIZEN.” EMMA BECKER ‘16

YOUR GENEROSIT Y KEEPS OUR STUDENTS AHEAD. THANK YOU.

Peddie never stands still — always improving, innovating, striving to be the best version of itself. Our students go forward into the world knowing they have an excellent academic foundation on which to build, as well as Peddie’s formidable reputation standing behind them. None of this is possible without an engaged, passionate community. Your generosity, through philanthropic support and the gift of your time to help build a powerful community, are the keys to keeping Peddie on the leading edge of academic excellence. Ala Viva!

Peter A. Quinn P’15 ’18 ’21 Head of School

MANY WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Whether you’re a new parent, returning parent, recent graduate, alumna/us, first-time donor or a leadership donor, there are many ways to be part of the philanthropic community that has built Peddie into what it is today. You may choose to give your time, your talent, a philanthropic gift — or all of the above.

ALUMNI OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER So much of our progress, growth and success is due to the tireless support of our alumni. Of course, the Peddie experience doesn’t end when our students graduate, and the main reason is that our alumni continue to be engaged, active and dedicated to keeping the spirit and story of Peddie strong wherever they go.

CLASS AGENTS

Class agents educate fellow alumni about Peddie’s finances and the importance of the Peddie Fund, as well as encouraging them to lend philanthropic support. Campaigns are organized via email, phone, text and social media to motivate giving during the Young Alumni Blair Challenge, Peddie Loyalty Day and other special initiatives. To learn more, please contact Laura Hazlett, director of the Peddie Fund, at lhazlett@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7689. REUNION CLASS CAPTAINS

Captains provide outreach by phone, email and direct mail to help generate excitement and boost attendance during class reunions, which take place around each five-year milestone. Reunion class captains also encourage their class to contribute a class gift to the Peddie Fund. To learn more, please contact Kelly Jo Burnett ’98, associate director, Peddie Fund reunions, at kburnett@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7690. CLASS SECRETARIES

Volunteers in this role collect news and prepare Class Notes columns twice a year for the Peddie Chronicle — a fun way to engage and re-engage with classmates and share news. They also help drive attendance at reunions, increase class participation in the Peddie Fund, reunite old friends and help alumni network professionally and socially. To learn more, please contact Carrie Harrington, Peddie Chronicle editor, at charrington@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7612.

PARENT OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER Behind every great success, there is someone donating their time to support and ensure it. We are proud to have a strong and energized volunteer community constantly helping Peddie reach new goals. Peddie parents are in a class by themselves. Their dedication throughout the year keeps Peddie’s ongoing quest for excellence on track w hile also enriching their connection to the school and its students.

PEDDIE FUND PARENT COMMITTEE

Help grow the Peddie Fund, the school’s most important fundraising initiative, which fuels virtually every facet of the Peddie experience — supplying everything needed to provide students with a superior education. Throughout the year, in person and remotely, committee members reach out to parents to help them understand how the Peddie Fund works and how it benefits the students and faculty. After educating parents, committee members also ask them to consider making an unrestricted gift of any size to the Peddie Fund. To learn more, please contact Laura Hazlett, director of the Peddie Fund, at lhazlett@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7689. PEDDIE PARENTS ASSOCIATION

The Peddie Parents Association (PPA) serves as an invaluable link between families and the school. Members offer Peddie the gifts of their time, talent and enthusiasm, hosting a wide variety of events for students and families. Volunteer opportunities with the PPA are available for both boarding and day families. Attend PPA meetings, serve on a committee (listed below) or share your Peddie story with other families. To learn more, please contact Laura-Lee Hensle Radtke ’92 P’22, director of special events, at lradtke@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7968. PPA COMMITTEES

“WE SUPPORT PEDDIE BECAUSE WE SEE IN OUR SON THE DIFFERENCE PEDDIE MAKES IN THE LIVES OF STUDENTS. IT IS MORE THAN AN EDUCATION; IT IS A COMMUNITY WHERE CHILDREN DEVELOP INTO THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES.” RICHARD & JENNIFER PIEPSZAK P’21 ‘23

PHIL ANTHROPIC GIVING Thomas B. Peddie’s gift of $25,000 in 1872 and later, Walter Annenberg’s $100,000,000 gift in 1994, set Peddie in motion to become the leading educational institution it is today. Since then, the generosity of current parents, parents of graduates, alumni, faculty, staff and friends has propelled the school to greater heights and broader horizons with each passing year. We would not be the community we are without the steadfast support of each and every one of our donors.

THE PEDDIE FUND

This is Peddie’s most ambitious annual fundraising effort and the top philanthropic priority. The Peddie Fund raises unrestricted dollars to support and retain faculty who are experts in their fields and to enhance academic, athletic, arts and extracurricular programming for our students. It augments the school’s operating budget with immediate and unrestricted funds, crucial to ensuring and supporting every part of the transformative Peddie experience. As we aim to double the Peddie Fund over the next few years, imagine the impact: An additional $2,500,000 to be spent annually for students and faculty equates to an additional $50,000,000 in the endowment. A strong Peddie Fund is the result of a collective effort by each of us and results in our ability to offer an outstanding experience without diminishing the strength of our endowment. Your gift truly makes a difference. As support for the Peddie Fund grows, so does Peddie’s flexibility to do more for students and faculty. Gifts to the Peddie Fund are spent in the year they are made and help balance the budget. In 2018–2019 the Peddie Fund contributed $2,555,102 to the school’s operating budget. Peddie’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. Please consider making an unrestricted gift by June 30 each school year.

To learn more about leadership support, contact Mary Tennyson Mahoney ’94, associate director, Peddie Fund leadership, at mmahoney@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7613. CAPITAL AND ENDOWMENT SUPPORT

Capital and endowed gifts ensure the long-term programmatic strength of Peddie, supporting faculty, student and facility needs. Recently, parents, alumni and friends put their generosity to work to provide new endowed funds for named scholarships and to endow faculty chairs and programs. Capital funds built Kaye and Green Dormitories and the Izzo Design Laboratory, among other projects, as well. Gifts to capital and endowment initiatives are typically made in addition to Peddie Fund support and can be paid over a period of time — up to five years.

MULTI-YEAR PLEDGES

We recognize that making a larger gift to support a capital or endowment gift is a significant commitment. Donors who wish to contribute to one of these initiatives may choose to make payments over three to five years. When you commit to a multi-year or multi-purpose pledge, you help Peddie plan for the future. We appreciate these pledges to the Peddie Fund, to capital projects and to unrestricted endowment. If you are ready to make a multi-year pledge to the Peddie Fund, please contact Laura Hazlett, director of the Peddie Fund, at lhazlett@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7689. For any other purpose, please contact Amy Cross, director of development, at across@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7614.

GIFTS THROUGH ESTATE PLANNING

Naming Peddie in your will — as a beneficiary of life insurance, through a retirement plan or through a charitable gift annuity or trust — can offer substantial tax and income benefits as well as help secure the school’s future. Donors who include Peddie in their long-term plans are warmly recognized as members of the Bell Society and receive invitations to annual events. To learn more, please contact Anne DeMesa, director of gift planning, at ademesa@peddie.org or at (609) 944-7615.

“I HAVE FOUND PEDDIE CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS LAST A LIFETIME. IF A GIFT TO PEDDIE CAN HELP EVEN ONE STUDENT HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE OR DISCOVER SOMETHING IN THEMSELVES THAT THEY DIDN’T KNOW WAS THERE, IT’S MONEY WELL SPENT.” DAVID DESOCIO ’83

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why doesn’t the board of trustees set tuition to cover the entire cost of a Peddie education? During the strategic planning process, the Board of Trustees carefully evaluated Peddie’s cost structure and expenses and determined that the school is very well managed. What’s more, it keeps educational expenses competitive with our peers. A diverse, curious and engaged student body is Peddie’s hallmark. Raising tuition to meet the actual cost of educating each student (roughly $70,000) would make Peddie inaccessible to many bright, exciting students. All students receive a subsidy to attend Peddie. Philanthropic gifts through the Peddie Fund and endowment spending directly help to build a vibrant experience that exceeds the cost of tuition. Your gift demonstrates your conviction in the school’s mission to the Peddie community as well as to prospective families, foundations and rating agencies.

Who should contribute to the Peddie Fund? Everyone in the Peddie community — trustees, alumni, current families, faculty, staff and parents of graduates — is asked to make an unrestricted gift to the Peddie Fund each year by June 30. When the Peddie community comes together to show our belief in our school, we can advance our mission in bold and powerful ways. Last year Peddie’s alumni participation was 21% (goal: 25), parent participation was 51% (goal: 65), trustee participation was 100% (goal: 100) and faculty participation was 99% (goal: 100).

How much does Peddie expect me to give? Gifts of any size support the current school year and help to set our plans and dreams in action. Join a leadership gift society (listed below) or contribute a gift of any size. Collectively, they can add up to astounding sums: In 2018–19, gifts of $100 or less contributed $67,000 to the Peddie Fund.

What is the difference between Peddie Fund gifts and capital/endowment gifts? Gifts to the Peddie Fund are solicited annually and provide critical funding for programs in the current year. Gifts to capital projects and the endowment are generally larger, typically paid over three to five years, and fund long-term projects to ensure the continued advancement of the school. To have the flexibility to support long-standing and new programming and to remain competitive with peer schools, Peddie must grow our annual giving program — both in participation and dollars raised. The annual giving programs of Peddie’s peer schools support up to 10% of their annual budgets, compared with Peddie’s 5%.

Peddie has a large endowment. Why do they need my gift? Peddie is fortunate to have a substantial endowment that places the school in the top tier of boarding schools’ ranking endowment. Regulated by the Board of Trustees, the endowment is carefully managed to ensure that it is available for future generations of Peddie students. By nature, the principal of the endowment is not spent, but reinvested if investment returns exceed spending rates. Similar to investment principles individuals might follow for personal savings or retirement accounts, the endowment is the school’s long-term savings. One-third of the school’s annual budget comes from endowment income, and much of this is restricted for special purposes, from financial aid to specific program support, each initiative near and dear to our donors’ hearts.
