Do you ever look at interiors magazines and think ‘that’s very nice, but where is all of their stuff?’ or ‘does anyone live here or is it just a show home?’. I mean, lots of those very tidy, John Pawsonesque houses are elegant and nice to look at, but without stuff everywhere they lack soul. In some ways I admire the idea that you can own very little stuff and display even less. But I’ve been a hoarder since I was a child when I would collect everything; sweets I liked the look of and so couldn’t eat, tickets, souvenirs, packaging, even beer mats (long before I could drink the stuff). I’d display all of this stuff in my room and change it whenever I tired of it or could find nothing else to do. I think clutter at home or in the office is underestimated. It says something about the people that live and work there. Almost everything you own has a story, whether you realise it or not and this is why it deserves to be displayed. Some objects such as your old passport tell obvious stories, others have a quieter presence….that book of matches you picked up on your first trip to Rome, those weird sweets you used to love. Either way, the objects that make up our clutter define who we are in much more interesting ways than the art on our walls, the clothes that we wear or the cars that we drive. These little bits and bobs -mugs, match boxes, tickets, pencils- are the layers of our life that tell our friends and family about us and, displayed correctly, can really add character and warmth to a place. They’re the things that make people linger, that remind them that people occur the space, that truly reveal who we are and what we like. Of course, there’s something great about a good clean-out and I’ve just enjoyed a really good Spring Clean (I recently took four big boxes to the charity shop). You have to be in a fairly ruthless mood to affect a really good Spring Clean. But the best bit is that you discover stuff that you’d forgotten you had that can make for new displays. The disadvantage of clutter? Well, it’s hell to clean. But a bit of dust never hurt anyone. Charlie

INTERVIEW: CAROLINE JONES & KNICKERS MODEL’S OWN

Caroline Jones is the brains behind possibly the best New Year’s Resolution we’ve ever come across, the inspired Knickers Model’s Own campaign for Cancer Research UK. To raise money and celebrate the life of her amazing Mum, who died late last year, every single day in 2015 Caroline is wearing -and photographing- a different outfit entirely bought from Cancer Research. How did this all come about? My story is simple. I am remembering my mum, Mary, who passed away on 24th October 2014 after a long, brave battle with breast cancer. Every day of 2015 I am wearing a different pre-loved outfit put together using Cancer Research UK (CRUK) finds, apart from my knickers, which are always my own.

Your campaign has been picked up by talk shows, blogs and social media and almost every newspaper, why do you think it has resonated so deeply with people? The media picked up on my campaign at the beginning of January, which was a total shock to me, I thought I was just sharing my daily photos with a few Facebook friends and that would be it, a bit of light hearted fun to help me with my grief. It was only when the BBC picked up on the story, on day 10, that everything changed. I realised very quickly that my campaign was tapping into 3 areas: those affected by cancer; those interested in the recycling of clothes and those who simply love fashion. I also realised the power of social media and how I needed to fully embrace it.

You’ve been shopping in Cancer Research shops throughout the country, which is your favourite? I have visited a dozen or so CRUK shops and each one has thrown up a gem, from a handbag to vintage pieces to designer labels, but my favourite has to be my local Harpenden shop, where I volunteer and where I really feel part of the team. I now have a Knicker Model’s Own rail which I curate and this is proving really popular with local shoppers.

What’s been your favourite find so far? My ‘Anglomania’ by Vivienne Westwood cardigan, which I recently found at the Marylebone High Street, London, CRUK shop. Beautiful to wear, from the drape to the colour to the neon shoelace belt, it takes pride of place in my wardrobe and makes me feel very, very happy.

Which outfit -so far- do you think your Mum would have loved most? My favourite outfit to date was 18th February, my mum’s birthday, and for this I wore a gorgeous 1960’s vintage coat, a pillbox hat and my grandmothers’ crocodile handbag. It was my way of celebrating the day and our shared love of hats.

Do you miss your normal clothes? At the beginning I was mixing ‘new’ with my preloved finds and the split was 50/50. But I have gradually packed away my ‘new’ clothes and seem to wear 90% pre-loved on a daily basis. It’s become second nature and I continue to be excited by what I discover as I visit my local CRUK shops. What is your top tip for charity shop shopping? Open your eyes, you have to want to go inside a charity shop and start looking. I am always driven by colour followed by shape and I will look right across the sizes because very often I can style a garment in a different way. People often say to me ‘but you always find the good stuff’ actually there’s no trick to it, I am just a frequent, repeat browser! Remember that the best charity shops model themselves on the high street stores, they colour and size code, they are seasonal, they have clean changing rooms, helpful staff, great accessories and a real knowledge of labels and key trends.

The response to your story has been huge. Aside from the enormous amount of money you’ve raised for a brilliant cause -almost £8k at the time of writing- what has been the most surprising thing to have come out of it? It has to be the messages of support. They keep me going, especially when I am having a quiet, reflective day. For somebody to take the time to write a lovely message about my outfit really does lift my spirits. They are my secret support system!

This has started out as a year-long project, but it certainly looks like it has legs. What are your plans? I have just passed my 100 day milestone and that felt like a real achievement and convinced me that I can do this! I have such fun styling myself, fixing my makeup, choosing accessories and writing my daily posts. So perhaps next year I will develop that idea further. For now it’s just about getting dressed each day and posting my pictures before the school run!
