Working on an existing building consists in facing many different challenges to those that can occur when finding a vacant, lacking or not dividing land. A story, some neighbours, some values, of which we can extract much architectural influences and ideas, which can help or not, the desired project to go forward. Due to its future state of ruin and its urban situation, the necessary action on the “Colegio de la Milagrosa”, leads me to think of an action that can be prompted by both the heritage value of the building as well as by the ability to of the architecture which is generated. The generation of a place suitable to accommodate the citizens’ needs serves as a starting point for the implementation of the rehabilitation project on the “Colegio de la Milagrosa”.

Creating a Socio-Cultural Centre in this location responds first to the needs that society demands, choosing this place as historical space for the memory of the citizens and with a prime location in the Albox’s center. With this action I intend to give the square the central importance it had in the past and to recover the life the main square must have in every town or city, without ever forgetting about the different activities the square permits, as well as new future activities which will be possible with the rehabilitation and enhacement. This way, we will be able to requalify the physical environment of the main square, allowing it to become the engine of the economic activity and, above all, cultural, that the city currently lacks.

The cover becomes something not only understood as an element to be solved, but as well as the origin of the whole process. One needs to be aware of the lost role of the cover in architecture, because if modern architecture opened so many doors, it also closed many others. In our case, it is not only understood as an element to solve seeking for habitability conditions in the building, but it also serves as a generator of architectural design, while complying with the basic requirements a classical cover must meet. Opening skylights in the cover baths in light every corner of the central courtyard according to the solar movement, this way participating in what happens outside, creating such formal unity which has been sought for from the beginning of the project.

The special characteristics of light in Nordic countries, leads us to think about this while developing a meditation space. We consider light treatment in two high points at dawn and sunset. This leads to the generation of a structure, composed of two parallel elements, where each opening addresses and collects the sun as if it were a funnel, collecting as much light as possible and directing it inwards. To do this we generate a trellis which filters the light into east and west facades. This gives special warmth to interior spaces, as well as an air of mystery, necessary for meditation, and consistent with such an important place in some cultures, i.e. a cemetery. The generation of this trellis is formed by a rectangular structure of 0.40 x 0.80 m., which divides the sides into 3 equal parts, giving way to 9 rectangles of equal proportions, occupying this grid randomly. A trellis structure that is repeatedly placed against light generates those feelings that we seek. If we play with the vertical position of the grid, we multiply that feeling.

Generating 3 pieces with these features results in 12 different positions, making the whole trellis, be considered a single element, depending on the position in which they are placed. If it´s placement is particularized, moving it vertically, the result is more anxious. The passage of light between it increases the feeling that the light screening produces.

Scheme

The Professional College is located between two connecting shafts and the entrance to the city, a railroad limits us to the north and an avenue of dense traffic delimits us from south throughout the entire day.. Based on these constraints rather than trying to generate a benchmark for road traffic and the tight entrance to the city that serves as a visual reference, this takes form of tower with a prime location, west of the site, on the other side we find two large screens parallel to the entrances, which define the acoustic and visual border, converting its interior space ito a great opportunity for the generation of outdoor spaces that make us forget about the city that is around us, produces us with the ability to take advantage throughout the year with different uses.

The program comes divided by four differentiated teaching departments: Interior, Technical and Environmental Physics, Landscape and Gardening and Project Management, as well as some common uses: Administration, Library, Auditorium, Dining Room, Nursery and Gym. Instead of thinking of a separation between departments, it was decided on creating classrooms and workshop spaces with flexible uses, located in the sidebands, with a more formal orthogonal structure. In opposition, it was thought the interior would houses common uses, in a much more organic and free, where the most important thing when it comes to its location, was creating different spaces with their own identities. Resulting in different opportunities and transits from one place to another. East Elevation

The building is designed for ease of use for people that are going to be studying and working. So that it is not constrained when to move and move in and out of it. The importance of connections, both horizontally and vertically, to carry out this idea of a project gives us the opportunity to study how to address impediments that are in existing buildings.
