Architectural interventions in existing heritage buildings

PEDRO VÁSQUEZ GÓMEZ

I am an aesthetically driven person who enjoys combining technical knowledge with soft and creative skills to develop projects that provide genuine value to people and organizations.

I graduated from TU Delft this past year with a master’s degree in Management in the Built interested in contributing to sustainable urban development and the growth of organizations shaping it through an interdisciplinary stance that combines my interests in architectural design, real estate, and business development. I enjoy city life and the social interaction it generates, so I try to capture this essence in my spare time through street photography and running. Besides that, I like traveling and backpacking, as it has allowed me to meet incredible people and friends from across the world. Hopefully, new destinations in Asia and the Middle East can be added to my list.

The project proposes an intervention model in underused educational and cultural properties along Avenida Solano. This avenue is one of six corridors that belong to the pedestrian network presented in the Mobility and Public Spaces Plan of Cuenca (PMEP).

The proposal seeks to boost the historical, urban and landscape qualities of the Solano Promeborders, with buildings exempt from the urban environment end by suppressing the relationship between the facades and the public space.

Based on the strategies proposed by the PMEP, the intervention transforms the building into aring an active area with users throughout the day. By eliminating the architectural barriers, it is proposed to recover the connection between street, public space and building, improving mobility, physical and visual connection between the school and the boulevard of the “Paseo Solano”.

Urban startegy focused on implementing educational and cultural centers along the Av.Solano as regenerators of the Corridor Cordero / Benigno/ Solano throung the enhacement of pedestrial trips.

By eliminating architectural barriers, and promoting new uses the index of closed facades in the axis decreases from 63% to 37%

By raising a network of “high rotation” educational facilities, space for increases from 25% to 60%, returning the street space to the citizen.

Canoa, Ecuador

The intervention in the Canoa community (Ecuador) seeks to restore and improve the living conditions of the population that was affected by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 2016, which left 90% of buildings destroyed. It proposes using the empty lots for emergency housing that can vary in size to adapt to the conditions of the lot with 5 different housing design options.

xes, restoring the urban fabric. Likewise, the project proposes the construction to be carried out with local materials: bamboo cane and wood. This decision would allow it to be part of a production process with the local inhabitants of the area and thereby stimulate the local economy. The main goal is to take this opportunity to create a more sustainable community with a new model of planning through an architectural response.

Due to the number of peripheral schools on the site of intervention, a cultural facility is proposed under the model of “Park-Library”, seeking to enhance the landscape and cultural qualities of Conceived as three blocks, two of them occupied by the library and one by the auditorium, this and topography as it´s main resources, as well as materials within the earth color palette in the area.

A central circulation axis between the library and the existing sports area in the back of the site is raised, focusing the visuals towards the atrium under the library where the access is located. A walkway is designed at the back of the project creating a pedestrian continuity between the two ends of the site.

The project locates in a mixed area between high-density urbanized sectors and new expansion areas. The main objective is to complete the urban fabric consolidating a degradeted area, Tramway Sistem will connect this forgotten area with downtown and others interest landmarks of the city, making it and ideal sector for Colective Housing.

The project is composed of volumes, gaps and spaces that are the result of its context, the starting point was zoning and scaling the 6 story buildings with their surroundings. A mixture of city models between plot and bars creat a fairly dynamic distribution, in which its inhabitants have spaces with different scales, between active and pasive patios, parks and plazas. The ground restaurants and stores that create an active facade.

Discontinuous urban pattern, around the site, causing issues with pedestrian, cars and mobility

Two important bike lanes connect the site with the city, however a direct connection between them need to be planned.

The site is close to two tramway stations, being this the main reason for the project development.

The task was to intervene two houses that have been recently acquired by the University. The main goal was to turn both houses into one integrated project that served as an extension of the

“buildings” that have been incorporated over the years. Followed by the release of original stone arches, facade restoration and perimeter wall. Also a change of use is proposed with a gallery

The second house is preserved for the most part, distributing new uses according to the existant structural walls. The idea is to create a new facade adding two volumes covered in marble. This new blocks use a simple shape, that aims to integrate with one house and constrast with the other. This last house has been declarated as a heritage building by the city hall. The new architectural language seeks wto remain quiet in the back, giving the main stage to the more ancient buildings, showing that contemporanety and antiquity can coexist.
