MEANING OF A TATTOO.
A
tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment for artistic, ritualistic or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding. The first written reference to the word, “tattoo” (or Samoan “Tatau”) appears in the journal of Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Captain Cook’s ship the HMS Endeavour in 1769: “I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition”. Tattooing has been practiced for centuries worldwide. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, traditionally wore facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha(North Africa), Māori of New Zealand, Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, Arabic people in East-Turkey and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos.

VISITINGVALLEESCONDIDO Tattooing is a tradition among many of the indigenous peoples around the world. Tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts. The symbolism and impact of tattoos varies in different

hen I was a Chaplain on the ROTTERDAM I met this particular group of Embera Indians when the ship stopped in the Panama Canal. We struck up a friendship over 5 hours and a lot of beer. The Embera invited me back to Panama to visit their village which is a 2-3 hour drive from Panama City (depending on traffic) and then a 1-1.5 hour ride by dug out canoe up through the jungle to their village. It was an intriguing invitation, so when I got back to California I began researching the Embera online and accidentally discovered all the benefits of retiring in Panama. So we live in Panama because of our association with these folks! The Embera are one of the seven remaining indigenous groups in Panama. When Columbus and the Spanish arrived there were hundreds of indigenous groups. The amazing thing is that seven remain! The Embera Puru group are trying to preserve a cultural heritage and way of live, difficult in a country which is trying to move from “second world” to “first world” status. Since moving to Panama we have become friends with these folks and visited with them several times as well as having them visit with us in Valle Escondido in Boquete.

INDIAN VILLAGE The people of the Emberรก Puru village are incredibly warm and welcoming. I was pleased to be allowed to shoot as many pictures as I wanted. There was so much fantastic material to document that I could not fit it all into my original post. In light of that, here are a few of my favorite shots from my overnight trip at the Embera Puru village.

his gallery was shot by my wife (Marsha) and I on a visit to an Embera Village in Panama. The visit was a tour off the cruise ship. We got off the ship in Lake Gatun and took a bus ride for about an hour to reach the lake on which the Embera Village was located. We were met at the lake by members of the tribe in long dugout canoes with outboard engines on them. It was a forty minute ride in the dugout to the village. At the village we were greeted by the women and children of the tribe. There was even a band with all native instruments. They cooked lunch for us which consisted of fresh caught fish and fried plantains along with fresh fruit. Lunch was served on banana leaves and was very tastie. You will note that all the members of the tribe have tattoo like marking on their bodies. This includes all the woman and children. The makings are not under the skin tattoos but rather a black stain that is painted on. The stain will last eight to ten days before it wares off. Some of the tourists in our group had the stain tattoos put on their bodies. The Embera are outstanding crafters. The women make woven plates and the men do carving of local wood and a dried nut. The inside of the nut becomes almost like ivory when dried for over a year. This is how the tribe makes a living. The children go to state provided schools and learn Spanish. But the tribe speaks their native language in the village and dresses in loin clothes and short skirts for the woman. We were treated to a dance recital and during some of the dances the tourists were invited to get up and dance with them. They still live in the manner that their forebearers did. One family per single room hut and there is a community kitchen hut where the women prepare the food for the whole village. This village had 14 families with about 100 people total. Their medcial need are met by the tribe shaman who with the knowledge passed on to him utilizes the local plants for medicinal purposes.

The growth in tattoo culture has seen an influx of new artists into the industry, many of whom have technical and fine arts training. s art made on, with, or consisting of, the human body. The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body piercings, but other types include scarification, branding, scalpelling, shaping (for example tight-lacing of corsets), full body tattoo and body painting. More extreme body art can involve things such as mutilation or pushing the body to its physical limits. For example, one of Marina Abramović’s works involved dancing until she collapsed from exhaustion, while one of Dennis Oppenheim’s better-known works saw him lying in the sunlight with a book on his chest, until his skin, excluding that covered by the book, was badly sunburned. It can even consist of the arrangement and dissection of preserved bodies in an artistic fashion, as in the case of theplastinated bodies used in the travelling Body Worlds exhibit.

Face painting is the artistic application of cosmetic “paint” to a person’s face. There are special water-based cosmetic “paints” made for face painting; people should ask before having face paints applied what products are being used. Acrylic and tempera craft paints are not meant for use on skin and are not acceptable, nor are watercolor pencils or markers. Products not intended for use on skin can cause a variety of issues ranging from discomfort to severe allergic reactions.[5] Just because the product is marked “non-toxic” does not mean it is meant to be used on the skin.

TATTOO REMOVAL While tattoos are considered permanent, it is sometimes possible to remove them with laser treatments, fully or partially. Typically, black and darker colored inks can be removed more completely. An ink trademarked as InfinitInk is designed to be removed in a single laser treatment. The expense and pain of removing tattoos will typically be greater than the expense and pain of applying them. Some jurisdictions will pay for the voluntary removal of gang tattoos, Pre-laser tattoo removal methods include dermabrasion, salabrasion (scrubbing the skin with salt), cryosurgery, and excision which is sometimes still used along with skin grafts for largn the expense and pain of applying them. Other Medical Methods
There are other methods of tattoo removal, but most of them are so painful and ineffective that laser removal replaced them as soon as it became available. These other methods include dermabrasion, which would actually “sand” away the top layer of skin through abrasive friction. Another method is excision, where the tattoo would be cut away and the skin sewn back together. These methods have proved to cause much damage to the skin and result in severe scarring, and are only used today in extreme cases where laser surgery is not an option.
There are a IF YOU HAVE A TATTOO THAT lot of reasons YOU WISH TO HAVE PARTIALLY for possibly OR COMPLETELY REMOVED, YOU wanting SHOULD FIRST CONSIDER YOUR a tattoo OPTIONS AND DECIDE WHICH removed. If a tattoo is holding you back from getting a job you want or keeps you from attaining goals you have set for yourself, a little pain and scarring may be worth it to you. If you have a gang-related tattoo and are no longer associating yourself with that gang or any gang (good for you!), it would be in your best interests to have it removed. If you have a tattoo that symbolizes hate or prejudice, I hope that you will decide that it is time to let it go. If you are wearing a tattoo of a past love and now you have a new special person in your life, it would be unkind to your new love NOT to get rid of the old tattoo. it would be in your best interests to have it removed. If you are wearing a tattoo of a past love and now you have a new special person in your life.
Laser Removal
Today, lasers are the most common method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments, which are then cleared away the your own immune system. However, this isn’t all done with just one treatment. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate to destroy the ink. But, the more treatments you have, the more damage you do to your skin, causing painful blisters and scabs that can eventually lead to scarring. Experts in removal therapy say that technology has advanced to the point where scarring is minimal, sometimes non-existant, but this can vary depending on the situation.
