HOW TO BUY ART Collecting art might not make your fortune, but it will definitely enrich your life. Here’s our guide to getting started

B

uying an original piece of art is not like making any other purchase. There are no user ratings to help you gauge whether your new canvas will fulfil its purpose. Unlike a £1,000 bed, say, where ten years’ of use works out at less than 4p a night, it’s impossible to calculate whether an artwork’s price represents value for money. You can take into account the artist’s fame, the rarity (or otherwise) of their work, and the popularity of their style, but even this gives only a vague approximation of what the piece in question might be worth at some unspecified point in the future. But the fact remains that the right painting – or drawing, sculpture, print or collage – can have a transformative effect not just on your room but on you, every time you look at. It can uplift you, inspire you, and fill you with joy. No sofa in the world, however comfortable, can claim to do that. But where do you find such a piece of art? How do you even decide what sort of thing you like? Most of us probably have a clearer idea of what we don’t like. The best way to get started is to expose yourself to as many different styles and media as you can. It will soon become clear what attracts your eye and what sets your teeth on edge. This year’s Edinburgh Art Fair, held at the Corn Exchange across the weekend of 14-16 November (www.artedinburgh.com), is a good place to get an overview of what’s out there. Hundreds of artists, represented by dozens of galleries, will have their work on show and available to buy. And seeing so many different styles, techniques and subjects in such close proximity will sharpen your sense of what appeals to you and what doesn’t.

The Aberdeen Art Fair has taken off in the north-east and this year attracted thousands of visitors. Keep an eye on www.aberdeenart fair.co.uk for details of 2015’s event, which is currently scheduled for September. Back in Edinburgh, in its impressive premises on the Mound, the Royal Scottish Academy hosts its annual open exhibition at the end of each year. It’s a good way to see hundreds of small-scale works by some of the country’s leading artists. All are for sale, many at reasonable prices. This year’s show begins on 29 November and runs until 20 January (www.royalscottishacademy.org). The Paisley Art Institute (www.paisleyart institute.com) offers a similar show in the summer, while the Royal Glasgow Institute

of the Fine Arts has been trying to re-establish its once very popular end-of-year shows. The one planned for 2014, unfortunately, will not go ahead since the McLellan Galleries, which usually hosts the event, is being used by the neighbouring Glasgow School of Art following the catastrophic fire earlier this year. Plans are afoot to get back on track in 2015 – www.royalglasgowinstiture.org will have the details when they are available. Another opportunity to see art by a lot of different makers at once is at Scotland’s many Open Studios events. Studios up and down the country are opened up to ➔ ART GUIDE 2014

visitors who can take the opportunity to see artists at work, watch demonstrations of their techniques and, of course, purchase (or commission) a piece for themselves. Among the best established of these events are Dumfries & Galloway’s Spring Fling and the East Neuk Open Studios, but many communities, from Orkney and Shetland right down to the Crossing Borders festival in the Borders, host their own. It’s a fantastic opportunity to make a personal connection with an artist and to buy their work without a galley commission slapped on top. See page 29 for a comprehensive list of what’s on where and when. Wasps Studios has close to a thousand artists working in its various studio complexes across Scotland, and hosts frequent

and paintings. The big daddy is the Scottish Gallery (at no 16) which shows established names, including some of the best artists the country has ever produced – recent sales include works by JD Fergusson, Arthur Melville, John Bellany and Anne Redpath. But check out its basement for more affordable prints by contemporary artists such as Victoria Crowe, Mark Hearld and Kate Downie. There’s also the Dundas Street Gallery, Arusha, the Torrance Gallery, the Edinburgh Gallery, the Gallery on the Corner, the Photography Gallery and the Sutton Gallery, while just round the corner is the Open Eye Gallery. An afternoon browsing these rooms will allow you to see the work of well-established artists and young unknowns side by side, along with an extensive selection of prints for sale.

exhibitions of work. Catch up with what’s happening at www.waspsstudios.org.uk. One of the extra benefits of visiting open studios, art fairs and shows such as the RSA’s is that the atmosphere is likely to be far less formal than a visit to a gallery. A lot of people, rightly or wrongly, suspect there is an elitist element to art and are reluctant to venture into the world of the private gallery. It shouldn’t be like this, of course, and most gallery owners would love nothing better than to have more browsers coming in and taking a look at the work on their walls. There is no obligation to buy and it is a chance for everyone to open their eyes to a wide range of art, to be adventurous and to look in new directions. A wander down Dundas Street in Edinburgh will take you to a host of private galleries all offering different kinds of prints

Gayfield (see page 13), Summerhall and the Ingleby Gallery offer another perspective altogether, often showing artists of international renown. Don’t miss the Union Galley for ethereal Caithness landscapes by Hazel Cashmore, luminescent Scottish coasts and glens by Beth Robertson Fiddes and dynamic abstracts by Stewart Bremner, as well as an ever-changing roster of exhibitors. This is just a tiny selection of the capital’s galleries. A scout around Stockbridge, the West End or Leith will reveal many more thriving enterprises selling desirable artwork at reasonable prices. Dedicate a couple of hours to each neighbourhood and you’ll come away inspired. Glasgow has gained an impressive reputation around the world as a hothouse of genuinely contemporary art. Its artists havedominated the Turner Prize in recent years, ➔

Housed in a former Victorian warehouse located in Newcastle’s cultural quarter, The Biscuit Factory is the UK’s largest art, craft and design gallery. Its beautiful and dynamic gallery spaces are set over two floors, displaying a range of exciting contemporary fine art, sculpture, prints jewellery, quality craftsmanship & design led homewares. Gallery Manager Rachel Brown explains a little more and shares with us the importance of a Scottish connection: The Biscuit Factory hosts four major exhibitions a year representing the work of around 250 artists each season. In sourcing artists for our shows we often look north to Scotland and its bordering towns and cities, impressed by the sheer standard of creative output from artists working there. Currently we’re showing the beautiful work of Scottish figurative sculptor Jennifer Watt and the structural urban landscapes of Cate Inglis amongst others. Knowing many of our clients also hail from the north we’ve worked hard to forge further creative connections with Scotland, partnering with Spring Fling (a Dumfries and Galloway open studio event) and artmag to bring new artists to our audience and a new audience to these artists. Next year alone we have two large scale shows from Scottish artists Gordon Wilson and Georgina McMaster who have previously hosted sold out exhibitions with us. Flying the flag for our own region, we always have a host of North East artists also on display. Indeed headlining our winter exhibition this year, is local artist Anthony Marshall with paintings of urban, rural and coastal scenes

created in his own distinctive style, recognisable by their explosion of colour. As well as showcasing paintings and sculpture we believe in advocating a wide range of artwork for our visitors and our winter show demonstrates this particularly well as we gear up for the festive season. It’s a great opportunity for visitors to purchase a unique piece either as a stocking filler (with Christmas on the horizon) or invest in that something a little extra special. I always think that we cater to people looking for an alternative to the tedium of high street shopping. We’re proud of our gallery and our clients can be rest assured of the standard and quality of the work we represent. Praised for our ‘first rate art exhibitions’ by The New York Times and working with artists that have been profiled by prestigious institutions such as SaatchiStore, the V&A and print publications such as The Guardian, Vogue and Liberty’s of London we offer our visitors a unique and informal browsing and buying experience. IF YOU WANT... … thoughtful, semi-abstract landscapes to make a contemplative focal point, try Alison Dickson for rich textures and jewel-like colours or Hazel Cashmore for stormy skies and dramatic colours. … a more urban landscape, take a look at Anna King – her images of abandoned buildings and empty spaces are moving but unsentimental. Jamie Primrose’s city skylines are often saturated in glowing sunsets. Bronwen Sleigh’s delicate prints include finely drawn architectural details. … monochrome images that would make a statement in any room, try Graham Flack for intense, monumental portraits, or Ryan Mutter for powerful, expressionistic scenes of industrial life. … Old Master-style portraits with a contemporary twist, have a look at Steven Lindsay and Pippa Young for beautifully painted heads set against unsettlingly plain backgrounds.

… figurative work that pushes the boundaries, try Alice McMurrough for intricate, emotive dreamscapes with just a hint of nightmare about them, David Martin for fleeting, half-glimpsed figures in mysterious settings, or Patti Yuill for expressionistic, characterful children. … animal portraits, check out Angela Davidson’s superb paintings of horses and Georgina McMaster’s justifiably famous Highland cows. Clare Brownlow, meanwhile, uses a quill and ink to draw her wonderfully expressive woodland creatures. … still-lifes with a bit of life to them, try Janet Cleghorn for interesting angles and textures, or Alison McWhirter for dramatically textured paintings of flowers. … a portrait of yourself or someone you love, commission Borders-based portrait painter Carole Danielson and you’ll have something your descendants will be proud to hang on their walls.

PHOTOGRAPHY Scotland has many superb practitioners of the art of photography. Damian Shields captures sublime images of the Scottish landscape and regularly wins awards for his work (buy online at damianshields.photoshelter.com). Elaine Livingstone takes intriguing portraits of her fellow Glaswegians as well as of the city itself (elaine-livingstone.squarespace.com). Florence Royer, based in Pittenweem where she has been following the fishing industry, is a documentary photographer whose work always rewards a second look. Stills is Edinburgh’s long-established centre for photography, and it never fails to come up with new and surprising imagery. Not all of the work it shows is for sale, but it’s a good place to see what’s at the cutting edge of the medium. The Photography Gallery, in Dundas Street, shows stunning images, many of them landscapes, by Scottish and international photographers. 12 ART GUIDE 2014

CERAMICS, POTTERY AND GLASS Displayed correctly, a beautifully produced piece of pottery can make just as striking a statement in your home as a framed canvas, and the unique quality of individually crafted ceramics and glass make them increasingly sought after. The Scottish Potters Association and the Scottish Glass Society will keep you up to date with their members’ latest exhibitions. Names to look out for include Carrie Fertig (creator of dazzling sculptural glass; www. carriefertig.com), Jo Walker (skilled maker

of beautifully decorated stoneware ceramics whose work has recently been commissioned by the National Galleries; www.jowalker ceramics. co.uk), Ian McWhinnie (whose hand-built and wheel-thrown pots and plates are then painted with slightly unsettling portraits) and Louise McVey (maker of colourful and decidedly surreal sculptural ceramics; www.louisemcvey. co.uk). Along with an impressive selection of paintings and prints, Edinburgh’s Gallery Ten, in Stafford Street, very often has superb glass art on sale.

AFFORDABLE ART The Own Art scheme has been designed to make buying art more affordable by letting you spread the cost of your purchase over ten months with an interest-free loan. You can borrow anything from £100 to £2,500 to pay for any kind of contemporary art or craft, whether a painting, sculpture, piece of ceramics or furniture, limited-edition print and much more. It has to be a new piece by a living artist. More than 250 galleries in the UK are part of the scheme, while 20 online galleries also participate (in partnership with culturelabel.com). For up-to-date information about how to apply, see www.ownart.org.uk.

TEXTILES, MIXED MEDIA AND OTHER CRAFTS Artwork in three dimensions or with surface texture than just cries out to be touched can make a fantastic focal point in a room. Scotland has a thriving craft scene that is leading the way in producing work of real quality and resonance – have a look at the Craft Scotland website for events and exhibitions across the country. Try Gayfield in central Edinburgh for a celebration of textile design from around the globe, as well as chance to see and buy the work of local craft makers. Dovecot Studios, meanwhile, also in the capital, is the undisputed leader in all things tapestry – you can even watch the weavers at their looms. Dovecot’s annual Selected show (this year from 29 November to 21 Decem-

ber) sells top-quality crafts including handmade furniture by Angus Ross, ceramics by Lorna Fraser and glass by Jessamy Kelly, alongside work by 20 others. For something completely different, look at the mixed-media sculptures of Cheryl Smith (bycherylsmith.com). She uses reclaimed wood, offcuts of vintage tweed and all sorts of other bits and pieces to create unique and unforgettable little houses. Shaun McLaren recycles driftwood to make clever and charming pieces often referencing birds or the sea, while Karen Suzuki specialises in brilliantly characterful animals made from frayed and embroidered scraps of cloth (namelesswonders.jimdo.com). FIRST PERSON by FRANK TO

EXHIBITION OF SCOTTISH ARTISTS 2014 Stafford Gallery, Wimbledon Fine Art, 41 Church Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 5DQ Jan 26th – Feb 8th

I

f anyone asked me what has been the major influence on my art, I would have to say it was my own rebellious nature. Coming from a strict Chinese family and educated at a Catholic secondary school, my artistic expression was limited. I was criticised by my aunts and uncles for choosing art as a career. Once I was even asked to destroy a pastel drawing of a modern crucifixion by my school teachers because they thought it was offensive. It wasn’t until I went to art school that I was able to break away from these confinements. I was given complete freedom – artistic as well as intellectual. The one thing that I valued the most from art school, however, is taking inspiration from the Renaissance artists who also rebelled against the time they lived in. They were the ‘Bad Boys of Art’ in their era. Phantom (right) is a private commission that I recently completed for a client. It has been painted in my signature style, which is influenced by Michelangelo. I start with an abstract underpainting. There’s no form and no structure; it is just an expression with marks and colours applied to the surface – chaos, in other words. Afterwards I will try to visualise the human form

and ‘tweak’ it out with a mixture of solvents and paints. The painting may appear to have a religious theme because of the semicrufixional shape of the central figure, but it is far from that. Despite its visual simplicity, the painting itself is a complicated mixture of my interests and views. To me, it shows my love of geometry with the use of the Golden Rectangle; my interest in Roman infantry armour used as part of the figure; and my skills in using the basic colour complementary of subtle greens and reds to great effect.

Auction Etiquette

, G , IN G O IN E O N O

G

Bidding at auction can be a thrilling way to buy art. But don't get carried away until you've read our insider’s guide to what to do to win Words Teddy Macduff

The unstoppable rise of eBay has made us all a lot more familiar with the process of bidding at auction, but even if your feedback ratings are off the charts, there are quite a few important differences to note between the online world and real life

1 2

Go along on the viewing day and carefully examine the objects you’re considering putting in a bid for. Buy a catalogue, if there is one. It will give you descriptions of each lot and an estimate of what it is expected to fetch. You could also ask for a condition report. This will bring to your attention any problems with the item.

3 4

Never bid without viewing unless you’re an expert. And if you spot a bargain at the viewing, play it cool so no one else notices. On the day, bring proof of your identity (a driving licence or passport) and a credit card. When you register at reception, you will receive a paddle with a number on it, allowing you to bid.

5

Sit somewhere comfortable and enjoy the show – but don’t get over-excited.

6

Have a clear idea of how much you’re willing to spend. With a bit of luck you’ll get your item for less than your upper limit, but auctioneers are clever at cajoling the highest price out of the buyer.

7

Don’t be afraid to move a muscle – it’s a myth that a sneeze or a cough or an inadvertent twitch will be interpreted as a bid. You’ll probably have to wave your paddle in the air to catch the auctioneer’s eye for your first bid.

8

That said, once the auctioneer has taken your bid he or she will stay with you until you drop out (you can show this by shaking your head).

9 10

Be aware that you may be bidding against the owner’s reserve in the early stages. Remember that you’ll pay the hammer price plus VAT and a buyer’s premium.

Pam Carter

I am recognised for painting Hebridean and Coastal Landscapes. I use strong colour to capture the light and drama of the scene. I work in oils, using sweeping broad stokes and textured marks. Paintings will be exhibited in various galleries over the winter with solo shows starting in the spring. A range of paintings are also available here at the studio. Those that love the Hebrides often relate to my work. We have shared moments on empty beaches and storm light. I am often asked to undertake a commission of a shared place. Look out for my new website coming soon, which will show examples of my work from the different islands. It will also have information on the calendar of exhibitions and has some media coverage from both TV and Magazines. Limited Edition Lithograph and Giclee Prints are available - some solely exclusive to myself. Contact me for further information.
