NEWS FOR THE RESIDENTS OF COPPERFIELD September 2011

COPPERFIELD WOMENS CLUB

Women Serving the Community

It’s that time of year again and we can hardly stand it!! Our “Shop Til You Drop” Ultimate Shopping Marketplace is back, by popular demand! It will be held September 10, from 9am - 5pm at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress). This is the perfect location. It offers spacious rooms, wide aisles, free parking and free admission. We have 290 booths, which is a record sellout for us! We will have new and exciting vendors to interest the entire family; we even have stuff for your pet. So, mark your calendars and set your alarms. You don’t want to miss this! Remember, CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well. Membership in the CWC is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00p.m. for social time and refreshments, followed by a program at 7:30p.m. The church is located at Queenston and West Road. If there are any adventurous ladies out there, that love to have fun and would like to participate in giving back to the community, we encourage you to come join us! Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at sudomac@comcast.net. SUBMITTED BY ROSIE SERRANO-GARCIA

COPPERFIELD COALITION

A Non-Profit Incorporated Organization CopperfieldCoalition.com We are a community of Citizens concerned with the Smart Growth of the Copperfield Area. Our Mission: By working with residential, business, and governmental groups, our goal is Smart Growth that continues to preserve the architectural character, the property values and the quality of life in Copperfield, while maintaining the safety and enjoyment of all of our Villages. In 2005 TX-DOT (Texas Department of Transportation) conducted their public meeting to unveil their plans for the construction of an overpass on Highway 6N over FM 529. TX-DOT asked for volunteers to form a consulting group. Several individuals from the audience signed up. However, TX-DOT never contacted the consulting group. In 2006 one of the individuals who signed up for the consulting group obtained the list of volunteers. He contacted the rest of us and organized a meeting where we recognized that an overpass was not going to address the real mobility and safety issues, so we formed an official group called “Copperfield Overpass Alternative Solutions Coalition.” In 2007 we decided to take on more responsibility. We wanted to be more involved with our community and to help in more ways. We changed our name to the “Copperfield Coalition”. We filed with (Continued on Page 2)

Copperfield Coalition- (Continued from Cover Page) Harris County for our DBA (doing business as). We also filed with the State of Texas for our Formation of Incorporation as a non-profit entity. TX file# 0800794643 Copperfield Coalition supports “Smart Growth”. We encourage residents and businesses to learn about what options they have and how they can become involved in the process. WHY US?

The individual Homeowner Associations for the seven Villages of Copperfield and the Copperfield Community Association differ from the Copperfield Coalition in their ability to address and manage residential and business concerns. The HOAs and the CCA are chartered to manage the various contracts and enforce architectural guidelines, deed restrictions, waste/recycling, management, and crime watch. The CCA maintains the common area as far as landscaping, maintenance and any needed repairs. We are a grassroots organization formed to address the smart growth of the Copperfield area. We have the ability to address concerns that may require political and adjoining communities' involvement/engagement to address residential and business concerns that are NOT within the charter of the HOAs and/or the CCA. We disseminate information via our website, press releases, and email blasts to local residents and businesses. COPPERFIELD COURIER MENTOR ONE CHILD

Change Two Lives

CROSSROADS: Community Partnership for Youth Inc. (CROSSROADS), a United Way agency, provides mentoring for youth involved with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department. These youth are in need of caring adults who can serve as mentors to provide encouragement and guidance. With thousands in the juvenile justice system, the need for mentors is growing. Mentors must be at least 21 years of age, commit to 1 hour each week and attend a training and orientation session. There are many sites, areas (Katy, Clear Lake, Chimney Rock/Bellaire, and Downtown) and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. Volunteers mentor boys and girls that are placed in facilities by the juvenile probation department and who are in desperate need of a positive role model. The program is very simple, flexible and especially beneficially to both the youth and the mentor. Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy and hurting child (10 -17 yrs. old). Many times you may be the only positive role model in their lives! The mission of CROSSROADS is to prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive relationships between youth and volunteers. CROSSROADS is symbolic of where the youth we serve are standing - at a critical point in time in their lives. For more information you may contact us at 713-295-2779 or visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.
