Fairfield’s Fifty Plus Fun-Loving Group The Seniors of Fairfield are an active, fifty plus, fun-loving group of couples and singles who enjoy fellowship, monthly trips, and various activities together. If you or your spouse is fifty or older, a newcomer to Fairfield Village or have lived here in Fairfield for some time but have never attended one of our functions, you are cordially invited. Come be a part of our fun-loving group. We’re sure you will enjoy it.

OUR HISTORY: Over these past ten plus years we've taken over a hundred trips. The Fairfield Gazette's web-site has back issues available from September, 2004. In order to go back to our beginning, we must thank Kelly Peel of Peel Inc. for locating all our articles from their archives and sending them to us. We now have every article submitted, which enabled us to put together Our History, and a complete listing of all our trips. Just go to Our History in our weekly email to read about our beginning and all the trips we’ve taken. OUR SEPTEMBER BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Thursday, September 15, for four unusual tours around Houston. We will be touring the Beer Can House and the Orange Show Monument, as well as, the Houston Fire Museum and the National Museum of Funeral History. The Beer Can House is a folk art gallery/workshop consisting of more than 50,000 beer cans. The house was built by John Milkovisch who hated to throw anything away and after years of drinking his attic and garage were busting with empty beer cans.

The Fairfield Seniors

The Orange Show Monument is a 3,000 square foot monument which in its maze-like design includes an oasis, a wishing well, a pond, a stage, a museum and a gift shop. It was built single-handedly by the late Jefferson Davis McKissack. The monument encourages visitors to follow McKissack's theories relating health and longevity to good nutrition, hard work and eating oranges. The Houston Fire Museum houses a prized collection of 18th - 20th century fire service artifacts including a piece of structural steel from the Twin Towers (9/11). In addition to the self-guided tour we will enjoy a talk from an expert on fire safety for seniors. The cost for this trip will be $17.00 per person. Plus the cost of your lunch at Katz Deli, this has always been a popular place for us. To get your name on the list for the trip list call: Jackie Wurth at 281-304-0805. We will depart from the Fairfield Village Parking Lot promptly at 8:30 a.m. Please be there by 8:15 a.m. OCTOBER:THERE IS NO OCTOBER BUS TRIP. We were not able to get a bus for October: however, we do have a bus for November and the details will be in next month. OUR UPCOMING CRUISE SCHEDULE: We have put together a cruise aboard the Carnival Magic from Barcelona to Galveston, October 28 – November 13, 2011. We have eight couples already booked for this cruise. Along with a few ladies that have taken cabins together. This will be a really great trip. Check our web site for details. OUR SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES PLANS: Thursday, September 8: The Monthly Planning Committee meeting is at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Trails Club House. Everyone is invited to attend these meetings and participate in our upcoming trip plans. We really need to see more participation, especially from those that are taking trips. In fact, without more participation we may be forced to cut back on some trips, possibly one every other month.

Then later, around 6:30 p.m. that evening, we have our Monthly Pot Luck. It is also at the Lakeside Trails Club House. However, plan on being there early. Doors open around 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. Then stay and join many of our members that stay to play games after the meal and to finish up the deserts. Tuesday, September 20: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a little snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our September 18 weekly newsletter. Thursday, September 29: Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club House. It has been moved to the fifth Thursday this month to avoid two games in one week. It starts around 6:30 p.m., and we have plenty of room at the club house. We would like to see you there to enjoy an evening of games and fellowship with us. Just bring a little snack and plan on having lots of fun. There are some card games, some games that the members bring and of course dominoes. Around Fairfield FAIRFIELD WOMEN’S CLUB PRESENTS:

The Fairfield Woman of the Month……….Charlotte Byrne.! Charlotte has been a member of the Fairfield Women’s Club (FWC) since July 2010. Very soon after joining, she generously took on the role of Vice-President until July 2011 at which time she stepped up to become the President. Charlotte has been an integral member of FWC, becoming involved in all of FWC’s community events and charity fundraisers. Most notably, she has been the founder and Race Director of the Fairfield Triathlon, which FWC held for the first time in 2010. The FWC Second Annual Fairfield Triathlon is set for Sunday, October 9th, sponsored by Cypress-Fairbanks Emergency and Imaging Center. Charlotte, with her husband, Myles, and 4 children, has resided in Fairfield for 16 years. Charlotte grew up in Houston and attended

Westchester High School. She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a BBA in Finance. Her business degree landed her jobs at Merrill Lynch in New York, Dallas and Houston. After the birth of their fourth child, Charlotte became a stayat-home mom. Charlotte began working at the Fairfield Athletic Club in 1999. She was a teacher and director of the Fairfield Kids Club for 7 years and Lifeguard Supervisor for 8 years. She earned her Personal Trainer Certification in 2005. Since that time, Charlotte has followed her lifelong passion for health and fitness. Charlotte completed two marathons and triathlons. Currently, she is a Water Safety Instructor and teaches water aerobics and swimming lessons. She also teaches Yoga, Body Toning, and Boot (Continued on Page 15)

300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike, 3 mile run Fairfield Women’s Club is hosting the 2nd Annual Fairfield Triathlon on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the Fairfield Athletic Club located at 16055 Mason Road in the Fairfield Subdivision. Cy-Fair Emergency & Imaging Center is our title sponsor and will host a community health fair in conjunction with the triathlon. Cy-Fair Emergency & Imaging Center will offer several health screenings the day of the triathlon on Sunday, October 9 beginning 8am that will include: • Skin cancer screening • Blood pressure check • Weight and body mass index evaluation • Nutritional and fitness counseling • Personalized risk assessments for stroke and diabetes All screenings are available free of charge to triathlon participants, their families and friends, and event attendees. The OMS Teddy Bear Drive will provide 100s of teddy bears to children in the hospital. A new teddy bear is necessary because many of the children in the hospital have compromised immunities. Thank you for helping Fairfield Women’s Club bring awareness to OMS and show love & support to hospitalized children and their families. Opsoclonus- Myoclonus Syndrome Some infants, children, and adults suddenly develop a syndrome of opsoclonus, myoclonus, ataxia and encephalopathy. "Opsoclonus" is an unusual disorder of eye movement in which both eyes dart involuntarily (dancing eyes). "Myoclonus" simply means brief muscle jerks and "ataxia" indicates incoordination.

Change Two Lives

CROSSROADS: Community Partnership for Youth Inc. (CROSSROADS), a United Way agency, provides mentoring for youth involved with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department. These youth are in need of caring adults who can serve as mentors to provide encouragement and guidance. With thousands in the juvenile justice system, the need for mentors is growing. Mentors must be at least 21 years of age, commit to 1 hour each week and attend a training and orientation session. There are many sites, areas (Katy, Clear Lake, Chimney Rock/Bellaire, and Downtown) and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. Volunteers mentor boys and girls that are placed in facilities by the juvenile probation department and who are in desperate need of a positive role model. The program is very simple, flexible and especially beneficially to both the youth and the mentor. Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy and hurting child (10 -17 yrs. old). Many times you may be the only positive role model in their lives! The mission of CROSSROADS is to prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive relationships between youth and volunteers. CROSSROADS is symbolic of where the youth we serve are standing - at a critical point in time in their lives. FLAGPOLES

The following are the guidelines for all flagpoles placed at the front or back of one’s property in Fairfield Village. These guidelines have been adopted by each village in Fairfield and due to new state laws are in the process of being recorded with Harris County. It is imperative that anyone wishing to place a flagpole on their property submit their request accompanied by a copy of their lot survey (amongst your closing papers) indicating your proposed location based on the guidelines below. FRONT YARD:

The flagpole must be behind the 20 or 25 building line; if that building line is directly in front of the residence or garage, the flag should be incorporated into the flowerbeds. The flagpole must be on the homeowner's side of the driveway On a corner lot the flagpole must be a minimum of 20 ft. from the side property line and closer to the house. The flag must be flown with proper flag etiquette, including lights, and the flag must be removed when tattered or torn. The flag must be raised/lowered for appropriate holidays/events The flagpole cannot be at the curb or near the sidewalk The flagpole cannot be on the grassy area between 2 lots The flagpole cannot be placed on the “eyebrow” of a cul-de-sac lot. Lots 80 ft. and larger, placement will be determined on an as requested basis. The flagpole cannot exceed 20 ft. tall. The flagpole cannot be located on any common area, Restricted Reserves or other community property, including cu-del-sacs, unless installed by the HOA. Poles must be made of aluminum, fiberglass or steel and must be concreted into the ground for safety. To determine the size flag to fly on an in-ground pole, the rule of thumb is that the length of the flag should be a quarter to a third of the height of the pole. For example a 20ft. pole can be flying a 3 x 5 ft. to a 4 x 6 ft. size flag depending on local wind loads. The flag or hardware cannot be placed on a wood or concrete fence.

The flagpole cannot encroach any utility or drainage easements. The flagpole must be a minimum of 10 ft. off the side property line The size of the flag must be the appropriate size for the backyard so it doesn't disturb neighbors or hang onto neighboring property alongside or behind. On a corner lot the flagpole must be a minimum of 20 ft. off the street side of the property. The flag or hardware cannot be placed on a wood or concrete fence

School News CY-WOODS CRIMSON CADETTES BOOSTER CLUB Annual Fundraiser Golf Tourney

MONDAY, OCTOBER 10TH 1:00 P.M. AT HOUSTON NATIONAL GOLF CLUB The Cy-Woods H.S. Crimson Cadettes Booster Club will host their annual golf tournament fundraiser on Monday, October 10, 2011 at Houston National Golf Club. All proceeds from this major fundraising event will directly benefit the Crimson Cadette Drill Team and assist with their many activities during the 2011-2012 school year. The tournament will be a 4-person scramble with a 1:00 P.M. shotgun start followed by an awards dinner. The entry fee is $125 per player and includes green fees, cart, goodie-bag and dinner. School News Cy-Fair ISD & Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS): “TEAMWORK IS KEY!” VIPS is an acronym for Volunteers in Public Schools. VIPS in CyFair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These dedicated individuals, who give freely of their time and resources, impact the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. The district VIPS Executive Board spearheads the business of the VIPS. This board is comprised of volunteers elected to take on specific responsibilities offering support, guidance, and training to all volunteers in the district. The VIPS Executive Board meets monthly to evaluate and address the needs of the district and distribute information relating to volunteer and community activities and strengthen parental involvement in education. This fun, family-friendly event promotes physical activity as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle, and raises funds for research and programs to fight heart disease and stroke - our nation’s number one and number three killers. Each year, nearly 865,000 Americans die from some type of cardiovascular disease – more than the next four leading causes of death combined. But we can make that change!
