Fairfield’s Fifty Plus Fun-Loving Group The Seniors of Fairfield are an active, fifty plus, fun-loving group of couples and singles who enjoy fellowship, monthly trips, and various activities together. If you or your spouse is fifty or older, a newcomer to Fairfield Village or have lived here in Fairfield for some time but have never attended one of our functions, you are cordially invited. Come and be a part of our funloving group. We’re sure you will enjoy it.

OUR HISTORY: Over these past ten plus years we’ve taken over a hundred trips. The Fairfield Gazette’s web-site has back issues available from September, 2004. In order to go back to our beginning, we must thank Kelly Peel of Peel Inc. for locating all our articles from their archives and sending them to us. We now have every article submitted, which enabled us to put together Our History, and a complete listing of all our trips. Just go to Our History in our weekly email to read about our beginning and all the trips we’ve taken. DECEMBER: THERE IS NO DECEMBER BUS TRIP. We were not able to get a bus for December. OUR JANUARY BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Wednesday, January 18, to go to Shiner,Texas. This month our trip will take us to the Shiner, Texas its 125 miles west of Cypress. Shiner was founded as a railroad stop in 1887 when San Antonia and Aransas Pass Railroad was built, and was named for the town donor, H. B. Shiner. The town grew as trade center for Czech and German farmers. We will first tour the Wolters Museum, which is housed in the Wolters home, built in 1915. We will also get to tour the landscaped grounds, which include the Farm Implement Shed, the 1870’s Herder House, the Old General Store and the Shiner Jail. Then we will have a buffet lunch at the Werners Restaurant, which is included in the cost of the trip, which includes the buffet, tea and tip. After lunch we will be able to tour the historic gothic Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, placed on the National Registry of Historical places in 1983. It is known as one of the most eye-catching landmarks in South Central Texas. We will also tour the Spoetzl Brewery, the oldest independent brewery in Texas, and maker of the famous Shiner Beer. Copyright © 2011 Peel, Inc.

The Fairfield Seniors

The cost for this trip is $15.00, which includes the buffet lunch. To get your name on the list for this trip call: Jackie or David Johnson at 281-256-3794 Checks are to be made out to: Fairfield 50 Plus. Checks can be given to Jackie Wurth, Kay Wheeler, Mary Lou Cook or Jackie or Dave Johnson, also the checks can be mailed to the Johnson’s at 20923 Golden Sycamore Trail, Cypress, Texas, 77433. We will depart from the Fairfield Village Parking Lot promptly at 7:30 a.m. Please be there by 7:15 a.m. OUR DECEMBER ACTIVITIES PLANS: Thursday, December 8: The Monthly Planning Committee meeting is at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Trails Club House. Everyone is invited to attend these meetings and participate in our upcoming trip plans. We really need to see more participation, especially from those that are taking trips. In fact, without more participation we may be forced to cut back on some trips, possibly one every other month. Then later, around 6:30 p.m. that evening, we have our Annual Christmas Monthly Pot Luck. It is also at the Lakeside Trails Club House. However, plan on being there early. Doors open around 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. For the annual gift exchange pot luck, everyone brings a gift (around $15.00). Ladies bring a woman’s gift and the men bring a man’s gift. Then after our meal, everyone will receive a number. The first person whose number is called will select a gift from their gender’s gifts. They then open the gift and show it to everyone. When the next number is called, that person has a choice to either select a gift from their unopened gender gifts or take one from someone. Note: A gift can only be only taken twice. If the gift you had previously selected is taken, you will then have a choice, to either select a new gift or take one from someone else. This continues (Continued on Page 10) Fairfield Community Gazette - December 2011

9

Around Fairfield 50 Plus News - (Continued from Page 9) until everyone has a gift. It’s really an exciting and enjoyable evening. Special Note: The club will be providing the meat dishes for this pot luck. Tuesday, December 13: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a little snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our December, 11 weekly newsletter. Special Note: This month’s game night has been moved to the second Tuesday. Thursday, December 22: No Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club House. MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR For additional information on activities other than trips: Call Mary Lou Cook @ 281-304-8359 We recommend that you check our website regularly. We typically meet the third Wednesday of each month (rotating homes) from 7 to 9:30pm. Book Club members share food and drinks while discussing the book selection for that month. We read all kinds of books suggested by our members - classics, contemporary fiction, non-fiction, biographies, romance, sci-fi, etc. There are no book snobs in our group - we read it all! Fairfield Women’s Club Hosts:

2nd Annual Fairfield Triathlon - 10/9/11 300 METER SWIM

10 Mile BIKE- 3 Mile RUN The athletes arrived before sunrise on Sunday, October 9th at the Fairfield Athletic Club parking lot. A dedicated police officer spent a sleepless night watching over the race site through the night. The cone set up team hit the streets at 4am. A forecast for rain did not stop the hopeful racers and 100 volunteers from coming. Fairfield Women’s Club & helpers started making scrambled eggs at 6am. Denny’s donated 400 fluffy pancakes and hot coffee donated from Starbucks was brewing. The venue was set for an amazing race! 5:30am was a flurry of activities as vendors set up their wares, racers were body marked, bikes & helmets were checked, timing chips attached to ankles and the rain held. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer for safety, at 7:15am the 1st swimmer was in the pool! Racer #2 enters the water 10 seconds later and the pool becomes a saturated continuous snake swim for over an hour. A motorcycle escort leads the 1st biker on the 10 mile bike course down Mason Road past the Outlet Mall and Salyards, the new Middle School. The bike course was lined with signs, police officers and volunteers for a safe, organized route. After the bike course, the racers headed towards Fairfield’s scenic and charming lakes for a picturesque 3 mile run course ending with a red carpet finish line provided by Flaherty’s Floors. As the rain poured, volunteers kept their posts and cheered on the determined finishers. The servers balancing umbrellas kept the hungry racer’s plates full. Cy-Fair Emergency & Imaging Center hosted a health fair and provided tents, tables and chairs which ended up being the saving grace as the rain came and stayed. A packed tent of racers were present for the Awards Ceremony. 60 hot pizzas arrived from Dominos, Gambinos and Pizza Hut!

Jack McClintic with Run Houston Timing, was busy at work calculating the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place in each division. The youngest racer was 8 yrs. old to our Silverstreak Divisions for racers 70 yrs. + Medals were given to all 1st Timers 80 Award Plaques & over 40 Prize Drawings were announced by Race Director, Charlotte Byrne. A surprise bouquet of birthday balloons arrived from Mom as the racers broke out in a spontaneous Happy Birthday song to Charlotte. A crew of energetic Key Club kids from Cypress Ranch High School did a super job from start to finish as the clean up wrapped up at 1pm. With a safe race, an amazing refreshment team, volunteers and spectators cheering all along the course, rain could not spoil our race! Fairfield Women’s Club would like to thank the local businesses and restaurants for supporting our race. Our race benefited our local charities: • Team Tiara, • Morning Glory Ranch, Phred’s Place and OMS Teddy Bear Drive. • 30 new Teddy Bears were donated to children in hospitals. • Fairfield Women’s Club was able to raise over $7000 for our charities. • We look forward to hosting Fairfield Triathlon 2012 with plans of 500 Racers. • To keep updated on our triathlon, volunteer or sponsor our 2012 race, please log on to: fairfieldtriathlon.org • A big thank you to Friendswood Development for sponsoring our race shirts • & • Cy-Fair Emergency and Imaging Center for Sponsoring the Health Fair and our triathlon. Around Fairfield Stuffed Animal Drive The Compass Rose Girl Scout Service Unit is sponsoring a New Stuffed Animal Drive for the Houston Police Department in November and December at area schools. Information about collection dates will be distributed in the coming weeks. This third annual drive was a Girl Scout service project initiated by Julia Marie Briggs, who passed away unexpectedly in May, 2009, at the age of 13. Julia was an active athlete at Hamilton Middle School, Captain of the Cy-Fair Iron Maidens Lacrosse Team and a busy Girl Scout. As a Cadette scout, Julia was working to earn her Silver Award by organizing a service project for the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division. She saw a need to comfort young children who were involved in homicide cases, whether as witnesses or even suspects. Julia arranged a new stuffed animal drive that was to kick off in December 2009. Within days of her passing, her Lacrosse team members and Girl Scout troop members decided that they would finish this project in her honor. With thousands of new stuffed animals collected each year, this worthy project continues today. Please watch for information from your school about upcoming collection dates. Collections also will be held at Compass Rose Girl Scout events in November and December and at the Cy-Fair Burning Flower Lacrosse Classic tournament, named in Julia’s honor, in early December. Consider donating new stuffed animals in memory of a young woman and her promise and in honor of young children in need. For more information, contact Vera Briggs at 808adoberoad@att.net.

FTBALL

S SO FALCON

On July 2011 a group of coaches invited our Fairfield girls to enroll on a fall league in Cy Fair Girls Athletic Association (CFGAA). The season included an 8 game schedule and a tournament at the end of the season. This group of girls was split into 2 teams to represent Fairfield. Our teams were the Falcons and the Mustangs. Playing on this league was challenging since most of the teams have played together during past seasons and our girls would be together for a few days only. This story is about the Falcons and their journey through this season. As a new team our coaches kept reminding our girls the importance of being in practice and to work as a team to play hard and to never give up. Our team struggled at times but the stage was being set for the tournament. During tournament each team plays for their chance to keep playing the next rounds as long as they keep winning. A two loss team is out of the tournament. We won our first game of the tournament and lost the second in extra innings forcing us to play a third game the same day which we won. Our girls did not look back and won out 6 games in a row for the Championship. They played the Fillies in the Final and won the game in extra innings. Congratulations to our champions and for a wonderful season!

Coaches top row: Mark Rayne, Ron Angst, Tim Collins, Phil Grandjean, and Kenny MacLeod Second row: Evan Thomas, Katy Thomas, Valerie Grandjean, Jensen Macleod, Hailey Angst Bottom row: Kasey Rayne, Heather Gondesen, Hanna Collins, Mayela Fernandez, Kallie Hastings 26

2012 FSA SPRING BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL SEASON “Seriously…are you kidding me? Baseball/Softball already? He is as bad as the department stores putting up Christmas before Labor Day.” I know…my wife said the same thing. Yes, it actually is time to register your kids for 2012 Spring Fairfield Baseball and Softball! FSA DIVISIONS FOR 2012 • Baseball – Age of Child as of April 30, 2012 • Instruction T-Ball – 4yrs old (coed) • Tee Ball – 5-6yrs old • AA7 – 7yrs old (coach pitch) • AA8 – 8yrs old (coach pitch) • AAA – 9-10yrs old • Majors – 11-12yrs old • Softball • Sweetees (Tee Ball) – Kindergarten and 1st Grade

Copyright © 2011 Peel, Inc.

• Darlings (coach pitch) – 2nd and 3rd Grade • Angels – 4th and 5th Grade For baseball, please be aware that FSA does NOT offer a 13/14 year old age division. In addition, a child MUST turn 4 Years of Age on or before April 30th, 2012 in order to participate in FSA (in other words, no 3 year old children will be accepted in Instructional Tee-Ball). Softball divisions are based on the child’s current school grade, rather than the April 30th date. 2012 Baseball and Softball Key Dates The below dates (outside the registration days) represent our planned calendar. We will do our best to adhere to these dates, but we ask that you realize that adjustments may take place due to variances in registration numbers and/or inclement weather. All dates are tentative and subject to change! • November 15th – Online registration begins • January 15th – Online registration ends (Continued on Page 28)

Sports Section 2012 FSA BASEBALL & SOFTBALL- (Continued from Page 27) GETTING INVOLVED

• January 14th – In person registration (1 Day Only) • Week of January 23rd – Coaches Meetings • Week of January 30th – Tryouts for all divisions except T-ball (no tryouts for t-ball) • February 3rd and 4th – Drafts • February 6th – Practice starts for all divisions • March 5th – Games start for 10U (AAA) and 12U (Majors) • March 19th – Games start for all remaining divisions • March 24th – Opening Day Parade and Ceremony (weather permitting) • May 18th, 19th and 20th – Metro Zone Tournament (baseball only) LATE REGISTRATION There will be NO LATE REGISTRATION as we are providing 8 weeks to sign up. Unfortunately our size has dictated a more strict approach to this in order to handle all of the administrative duties and preparation necessary to start the season.

Lastly I would like to remind everyone to find a way to take part in your sports association. FSA is a volunteer organization and could use your help to provide the best facilities around. There are jobs ranging from helping with try-outs, opening day help, field maintenance, and concessions duty. We urge you to familiarize yourself with the Baseball and Softball Committee via our website and reach out to committee members to see how you can help. Two areas needing the most help with are nightly field maintenance and concessions. These are opportunities to not only get involved and meet great people, but most of all contribute to making Fairfield one of the best places around for our kids to play sports. On behalf of the Fairfield Sports Association and the Baseball/ Softball committee members, I would like to thank you for all your support. Mark Walston Baseball Commissioner

School News It’s All About the Students! from a volunteer’s view

It was barely 8:00 in the morning on Friday, Oct.14th. They were beginning to arrive. Upon checking in; name badges were handed out along with a bright red folder full of the day’s agenda and the conference material. There was even an eco-friendly tote bag full of coupons and goodies generously donated by local area businesses. The room was huge and full of tables decorated with bright paper blocks spelling out the main part of this year’s theme. “Teamwork”. This was the annual VIPS Fall Conference held by the CFISD VIPS Executive Board at the Berry Center in Cypress. The schedule was full. It consisted of everything from learning how to turn a popsicle stick into a fun treat for a teacher or volunteer to tips on helping our students handle stress. The attendees could choose from a variety of 50

minute sessions that covered topics such as: Internet Safety, Reaching Out to Diverse Volunteers, Guidelines and Best Practices for Fundraising and even Taking Care of Your Personal Health While Maintaining a Busy Lifestyle. Something was most impressive about this conference to one volunteer. This audience of 200 plus was comprised of men and women, volunteers and school staff - not limited to Cy-Fair ISD. There were 4 other area districts represented at this conference: Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Houston ISD and Spring ISD. The current budget environment has left our school districts vying to be first in line for every resource of financial and physical support they can find. But for one day in October, the district boundary lines came down. There was no competition.

There was no hidden agenda. Despite the traffic and everyday challenges, educators and volunteers from schools all over our county came together for a common purpose: improving their volunteer program thereby affecting the students in a positive way. This was simply an opportunity to attend an event that focused on several different areas of how to build on their volunteer resources in order to enhance the children’s education. While that volunteer sat looking out over the diverse crowd; she couldn’t help but see a universal theme, “Yes, in this room, it’s truly all about the students”.

It’s all here.

School News Candy Cane Fun Run for Education Saturday, December 10th at 9:00am

Recognizing the impact state budget cuts have had on CFISD, the PTO’s from the three elementary schools in Fairfield have joined forces to host their 1st Annual Candy Cane Fun Run for Education on December 10, 2011. With the strong belief education is a community affair, the Ault, Keith, and Swenke Elementary PTOs will use the funds raised to support programs that touch more than 2,700 CFISD elementary students in their neighborhood. To our knowledge, this is the first time CFISD parent organizations from individual schools that typically compete for fund-raising resources have joined together for the greater good of the larger community’s children as a whole. We believe this event represents so much of what makes CFISD and Fairfield a wonderful place to live. Top notch educational opportunities, a strong sense of community, and dedication to our family and neighbors. More information regarding registration will be available in the coming weeks through the three school’s websites and newsletters. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

ATTENTION CYPRESS RANCH HIGH SCHOOL Please join our VIPS email group cypressranchvips@gmail.com and stay connected with what’s going on down at the Ranch.
