Fairfield’s Fifty Plus Fun-Loving Group The Fairfield Seniors

The Seniors of Fairfield are an active, fifty plus, fun-loving group of couples and singles who enjoy fellowship, monthly trips, and various activities together. If you or your spouse is fifty or older, a newcomer to Fairfield Village or have lived here in Fairfield for some time but have never attended one of our functions, you are cordially invited. Come and be a part of our funloving group. We’re sure you will enjoy it.

OUR HISTORY: Over these past ten plus years we've taken over a hundred trips. The Fairfield Gazette's web-site has back issues available from September, 2004. In order to go back to our beginning, we must thank Kelly Peel of Peel Inc. for locating all our articles from their archives and sending them to us. We now have every article submitted, which enabled us to put together Our History, and a complete listing of all our trips. Just go to Our History in our weekly email to read about our beginning and all the trips we’ve taken. OUR JANUARY BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Wednesday, January 18, to go to Shiner, Texas. This month our trip will take us to the Shiner, Texas its 125 miles west of Cypress. Shiner was founded as a railroad stop in 1887 when San Antonia and Aransas Pass Railroad was built, and was named for the town donor, H. B. Shiner. The town grew as trade center for Czech and German farmers. We will first tour the Wolters Museum, which is housed in the Wolters home, built in 1915. We will also get to tour

the landscaped grounds, which include the Farm Implement Shed, the 1870's Herder House, the Old General Store and the Shiner Jail. Then we will have a buffet lunch at the Werners Restaurant, which is included in the cost of the trip, which includes the buffet, tea and tip. After lunch we will be able to tour the historic gothic Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, placed on the National Registry of Historical places in 1983. It is known as one of the most eye-catching landmarks in South Central Texas. We will also tour the Spoetzl Brewery, the oldest independent brewery in Texas, and maker of the famous Shiner Beer. The cost for this trip is $15.00, which includes the buffet lunch. This month our trip will take us to the Museum of Fine Arts to view the King Tutankhamen: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs exhibition. The exhibition is a time-ticket exhibit so we will have time for lunch at the Café Express in the Museum and to visit the other parts of the museum before the tour. OUR JANUARY ACTIVITIES PLANS: Thursday, January 12: The Monthly Planning Committee meeting is at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Trails Club House. Everyone is invited to attend these meetings and participate in our upcoming trip plans. We really need to see more participation, especially from those that are taking trips. In fact, without more participation we may be forced to cut back on some trips, possibly one every other month. Then later, around 6:30 p.m. that evening, we have our Monthly Pot Luck. It is also at the Lakeside Trails Club House. However, plan on being there early. Doors open around 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. . Then stay and join many of our members that stay to play games after the meal and to finish up the deserts. Tuesday, January 17: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a little snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our January, 15 weekly newsletter. Thursday, January 26: Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club House. It starts around 6:30 p.m., and we have plenty of room at the club house. We would like to see you there to enjoy an evening

Fairfield Women’s Club (FWC) “The Heart of Fairfield”

What is FWC? A nonprofit group dedicated to making Fairfield an enjoyable community in which to live. Who is FWC? All Fairfield women aged 18 years and older are invited to join. What does FWC do? It meets once per month for a fun evening plus it raises money for local charities and holds community events in Fairfield. Events include outdoor movie nights, triathlon, graduation tea, Independence Day Parade, scarecrow competition, Stop Solicitation campaign, garage sale and more! Where? The FWC usually meets right in Fairfield either at the Bradford Creek Clubhouse or in model homes throughout the neighbourhood. Sometimes we plan fun

“field trips” to nearby venues. When? The FWC typically meets the third Tuesday of the month. Why should I join? Meet new people, make new friends, help your community, have fun, get out of the house, try something new, get involved in your community! Are you new to the neighborhood? FWC is perfect for you. Have you lived in Fairfield for a while? FWC is for you, too! Is it a lot of extra work? There is no obligation to join committees! “Kick Off ” your new year by joining Aggie Moms at the first 2012 NWHC Aggie Moms’ Club meeting to be held on Tuesday, January 10th at 7 pm. The Aggie Moms’ Club is currently finalizing details for a truly special speaker for January and more details will be announced later on our website. All meetings are held at the Houston Distributing Company, Inc. conveniently located at 7100 High Life Drive and Cutten Road near Willowbrook Mall. The NWHC Aggie Moms’ Club brings area Aggie Moms together to support Aggie students through donations for scholarships and for on campus organizations at Texas A&M University. Come join other Aggie Moms for food and fellowship! At the January meeting, the Aggie Moms’ boutique will feature our new “ Aggie Traditions” pillows and other original Aggie gift items. These gift items are fabulous for birthdays and graduations and support a great cause! NWHC Aggie Moms will be hosting their annual spring fundraiser “Boots ‘N Whoops!” on Sunday, April 22, 2012 from 1 to 5 pm. The Fairfield Book Club is a terrific way to meet other women in our community, enjoy great conversations, and develop new friendships. CROSSROADS: Community Partnership for Youth Inc. (CROSSROADS), a United Way agency, provides mentoring for youth involved with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department. These youth are in need of caring adults who can serve as mentors to provide encouragement and guidance. With thousands in the juvenile justice system, the need for mentors is growing. Mentors must be at least 21 years of age, commit to 1 hour each week and attend a training and orientation session. There are many sites, areas (Katy, Clear Lake, Chimney Rock/Bellaire, and Downtown) and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. Volunteers mentor boys and girls that are placed in facilities by the juvenile probation department and who are in desperate need of a positive role model. The program is very simple, flexible and especially beneficially to both the youth and the mentor. Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy and hurting child (10 -17 yrs. old). Many times you may be the only positive role model in their lives! The mission of CROSSROADS is to prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive relationships between youth and volunteers. Sports Section Rosehill Christian School Boys Basketball Team Wins Conroe Covenant Tournament

With the sting of losing in the finals of the Irving Cistercian Tournament still fresh on their minds, the RCS Boys came out strong and defeated #3 ranked Austin Waldorf 47-37 in the title game of the Conroe Covenant tournament. Keith Self tied for a team high 13 points with John Ogle, going a perfect 5 for 5 from the field including 3 for 3 from three point range. To get to the finals, Ogle led the team in scoring with 25 points in the semi-final match against host Conroe Covenant. It was RCS’s first win against the school in three years. With a record of 10 wins, 2 losses, #2 ranked RCS is off to their best start in four years after being just one basket away from a TAPPS 3A final four appearance last season. “It is important to these guys,” RCS coach Ed Lamar said. “Hopefully they will look back and say they were part of a special team.” Lamar added, “Í was very proud of how they took the loss two weeks ago in the finals of the Cistercian tournament by two points, and they took that adversity and used it as fuel to prevail this week.” In a smothering display of defense, the RCS Eagles held Waldorf

to just l0 points in the first half, leading 24-10 at the break. Jimmy Courtright led the team with 7 rebounds. ln addition to Courtright and Ogle, guard Wayne McCullough was also named to the all tournament team. RCS was the only school with three players selected to the squad. At the Cistercian tournament, Ogle and McCullough were also named to the team after leading the team to the title game. To get to the finals of the Covenant tournament, RCS defeated Woodlands Prep Academy 63-48 in the first round, and were led the way by Ogle and Courtright contributing 20 points each, ln the second round, they routed Calvary Baptist 81-24, after leading 52-14 at the half. RCS was led in rebounding by Jeremy Michel, Ogle and McCullough all chipping in with 8 rebounds. Currently ranked #2 in the State for TAPPS 3A Schools, prior to defeating the 3rd ranked Austin Waldorf, Rosehill Christian has also defeated #5 ranked Dallas Shelton, followed by a win against SPC division Trinity Valley. Earlier in the season, RCS defeated #4 ranked Northeast Christian. Irving Cistercian is ranked #21 in the large private school category.

The free breakfast is the opportunity for youth athletes to register for the club’s 2012 spring/summer track season, and to meet the Northwest Flyers coaches, staff, and other new and returning athletes. The event will be highlighted by a special presentation from a member of the USA Track & Field Olympic organization. All new parents and athletes interested in joining the Northwest Flyers must attend. The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a youth (ages 6 -18) track club, affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF), that provides a full program of sanctioned “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays, and sanctioned “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin. The Northwest Flyers has approximately 275 members.

The club was founded 25 years ago by Olympic gold medalist Fred Newhouse to foster the development of youth track & field in the Northwest Houston area. The Northwest Flyers is a member of the “Win with Integrity” program, a partnership between USATF and the American College of Sports Medicine. “Win with Integrity” brings elite track & field athletes and school-aged kids together to promote healthy lifestyles, keeping active, and living with integrity through the sport of track & field. BB GUNS SHOOTING AT THE DUCKS Dear Residents, Concerns have been received regarding teenage boys seen shooting BB guns at the ducks in Lake 9 in the Lake Point area. This is inhumane treatment of your wildlife and if you see anyone deliberately harming any animal please notify the Sheriff immediately at 713-221-6000. This is no doubt very disturbing to everyone, especially the residents living around the lake who have witnessed this cruel behavior. Thankfully no homeowners, children or passersby have been harmed. Many communities are ripe targets for solicitors – for a variety of reasons. While the Association has no real control over soliciting activities, we have tried to discourage solicitors from marketing in our community by placing “no soliciting” signs in common areas. The reason that we cannot prevent soliciting is that the streets and roadways within the community are public access ways owned and maintained by the county. This means that no person or persons may be prevented from entering the community. Of course, if an individual or individuals are in the process of breaking the law, the Sheriff or other law enforcement officer can take immediate action. Your Association recommends the following actions that every owner can take to discourage unwelcome soliciting in the community: • Report all suspicious persons to the Sheriff’s Department and request the deputies on duty be made aware of your concerns. • Promptly remove all flyers left on your front or garage door. • Promptly report to the Post Office all flyers left on the mailboxes. • Refuse to make use of solicitors’ offers and refuse to patronize any company being marketed in this manner. • Notify the managing agent of any companies presently soliciting so that letters can be sent advising them of this policy of not permitting door to door soliciting (they will be reminded of the community newsletter and/or the Green Sheet as marketing options). • Individual homeowners have the ability to place a small “No Trespassing/No Soliciting” sign at the entry to their homes. Should a solicitor continue to leave flyers, the homeowner then has the authority to file charges against the Solicitor/Company for trespassing on private property.

Cy Falls High School WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR 2012! We had a wonderful closing of our 2011 year. December was a flurry of activity. The Holiday Concert was beautifully arranged with traditional carols and an eclectic mix of international seasonal songs with accompaniment. Labay men’s choir shared their vocal talent to the festivities. It was a feast for the eyes, ears and soul. A perfect blending for a perfect start to the holidays. The students threw a joyous party with admission being non perishable food items to help out our neighbors in need. Amongst the fun was dancing, singing, the museum game and hilarity of the white elephant gift exchange. Don’t forget the mountains of cakes, cookies, flan, and more cookies!!! Auditions for the Area choir will take place January 7th in San Antonio. We wish all our participating members courage as they meet this challenge head on.

Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) performance for the men’s choir will be this year. It is quite an honor to be chosen to participate and our men have been working diligently on their vocals. This will be in San Antonio and no doubt surrounded with fun as memories are made. UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest takes place on the 27th. Sing steady Eagles! A sweepstakes will be the hopeful theme of the day! Pizzazz is the annual variety show held in the auditorium of the high school. It is always well done, complete with choreography, costumes and set design. This family event will be on February 24th and 25th. Mark your calendars now as this is one show you do not want to miss! This is always a highlight to our school year. As always, we want to thank Mrs. Douglas, Ms. Loftin and our family of volunteers for whom we could not function. GO EAGLES CHOIR!

It’s the time of the year when we find ourselves setting new goals or “resolutions”. Maybe it’s time to set a new personal goal to become a part of our winning team. Unlock your talents and volunteer your time in our school district. The Cy-Fair VIPS team roster needs you and is never too full! VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. These dedicated individuals, who give freely of their time and resources, impact the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. The district VIPS Executive Board spearheads the business of the VIPS. This board is comprised of volunteers elected to take on specific responsibilities offering support, guidance, and training to all volunteers in the district. The VIPS Executive Board meets monthly to evaluate and address the needs of the district and distribute information relating to volunteer and community activities and strengthen parental involvement in education.

School News CYPRESS RESIDENTS ENJOY HOLIDAY SPIRIT AT THE CANDY CANE FUN RUN & WALK FOR EDUCATION More than 800 people, many decked in fun holiday outfits, participated in the First Annual Candy Cane Fun Run & Walk for Education on Saturday, December 10th in Fairfield. Hosted by the combined forces of Ault, Keith, and Swenke Elementary PTOs, the Fun Run benefits students of CFISD. CFISD Superintendent Dr. Mark Henry was the honorary starting judge. Salyards Middle School Principal Jill Smith, CFISD Board Trustee Christine Hartley, and Dr. Henry also judged a costume contest prior to the race. “We wanted to have an event that brought our community together and benefited CFISD students,” said Swenke PTO President Stacie Keneker. “Our elementary school families eventually come together at Salyards Middle School, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get a head start.” Keneker brought the idea to fellow PTO presidents Gini Howell of Ault and Kelley Fisher of Keith, and both PTOs embraced the plan. Cheered along the way by Fairfield residents, participants ran, walked, and rode in strollers on the three-mile course winding through the neighborhood. Volunteers served as traffic monitors, passed out water, signed in registrants, and passed out hundreds of goody bags and t-shirts. CFVFD was on hand with a vehicle for kids to explore, local Key Club volunteers provided face painting, and a bake sale sold delicious goodies and hot cocoa while raising funds for all three schools’ 5th Grade Parties. Local vendors provided a Christmas shopping opportunity at the Candy Cane Market. Sponsors for the Candy Cane Fun Run & Walk supported the event and provided prizes for the age category winners and costume contest winners.
