WILDHORSE EVENTS 2011 In all, 2011 was a good year for Wildhorse Community events including the new Trunk or Treat event, and the return of an old favorite, the Wildhorse Fiesta Parade. Whether enjoying the sun and tunes at the Back-to-School Bash, hitting the pavement for the Stampede Fun Run, touring our haunted house at Trunk or Treat, or enjoying a blockbuster movie under the stars, Wildhorse families had many opportunities to enjoy the company of their friends and neighbors. To commemorate the fun we had this year, the Communications Committee has compiled photos highlighting the events this year.

The year 2011 demonstrated the potential of this association to grow and prosper. We hope that 2012 builds on that momentum, and that more homeowners become involved in enhancing our community’s stature and image.

WILDHORSE HOA DUES PRE-PAYMENT INCENTIVE FOR 2012
NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE
In 2011, the Board of Directors authorized a pre-payment incentive program. This incentive encouraged 20% more members of the association to pre-pay their dues than the previous year. Because of the success of this campaign, the Board is re-authorizing the incentive for 2012. Homeowners who have pre-paid their entire remaining year balance by April 30th, 2011 will be included in a drawing for ten $50 gift cards. THE GOAL OF THE CAMPAIGN IS TWO-FOLD: • To reduce the administrative burden of tracking residents at various stages of re-payment • To reduce the number of delinquent accounts caused by “missing” or “late” payments because homeowners have overlooked the obligation
For those who elect to participate, you will have the benefit of one less bill to keep track of for the rest of 2012. You will continue to receive quarterly statements from our management company showing a credit for the remainder of the year so you can track your balance. The Board of Directors would appreciate your consideration and cooperation with this effort.
Wild About Wildhorse Looking at the number and the quality of events for this year, one may think that Wildhorse has an army of volunteers. The truth is there are a few, dedicated homeowners who are willing to contribute their time to benefit over 2000 of their closest neighbors. These volunteers do everything from staffing events, writing newsletter articles, updating the website, picking up trash, planning future park development, managing our Facebook group, ensuring code compliance, and even manage the association. In 2012, please consider making a commitment to your community by volunteering your time and talent. Let’s make Wildhorse more than just a place to live, but a community we are proud to live in. Thank you to all of you who have already answered this call. 4

WILDHORSE Five for Wildhorse When thinking about what will be different for you and your family in 2012 or how you can instill the seed of volunteerism in your children, look no further than right here in Wildhorse. While community participation in committee-sponsored events in 2011 grew as it has over the past few years, new membership to support the volunteers on those committees has not been as promising. The very few who offer their time and talents to support the community as a whole make it possible for the community to enjoy the many events highlighted in this month’s newsletter. Most HOAs offer little to nothing to their members, but Wildhorse is no ordinary HOA due entirely to the residents who volunteer their time. In the spirit of the New Year, please consider giving the gift of service to our community. The Wildhorse Board of Directors has re-authorized the new incentive program to encourage all residents to participate in making this a better place to live. We are asking all residents to set a goal of five (5) service hours to the community by volunteering to help at a community function, writing articles for the newsletter, participating in community clean up days or starting one on your street, or to help with managing community meetings to name a few options. The HOA will offer a commemorative gift to the first 50 residents who accrue 5 hours of service to the Wildhorse HOA. This is an opportunity for students who need community service hours, families who want to do something positive together, or individuals who want to make a difference. Forms will be available at our website, www.wildhorsecommunity. com. If you have any questions about this program, please forward them to volunteer@wildhorsecommunity.com. Please consider doing your part to make Wildhorse the community we all dreamed it would be.

Taking a Bite Out of Crime By Marilyn Sibblies – Communications Committee
For those of you who have not joined our community Facebook group, Let me share with you that there has been much helpful information passed by our well-informed members. From info about alarm systems, to door kick plates, to being on the lookout for a black Excursion SUV: license plate TPF-507 (the occupants were seen stealing holiday packages from a doorstep). A few homeowners are ready to do something about the crime that seems to be surfacing in our precious community. There are a few volunteers interested in starting a COP - Citizens on Patrol/ Cellular on Patrol or a Neighborhood Watch program in Wildhorse. As the volunteers organize, you’ll be hearing more about how you can contribute to or benefit from such an effort. In the meantime, if you are interested in actively participating, please contact the Communications Committee at communication@ wildhorsecommunity.com, and we’ll make sure you’re included in the discussion. WILDHORSE Take a Winter Holiday from Watering
By Juan Soulas of SAWS Know when to turn it off. You’ve seen it emblazoned across billboards throughout San Antonio: SAWS’ reminder of the day and times we’re allowed to water. But this time of year that’s even easier to remember because you can consider turning it off for the entire winter! For those of you who hand water or use hoseend sprinklers, that’s pretty straightforward. But for those with automatic sprinkler systems, it means going to the controller and simply turning it off. SOME COMPELLING REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD
• Seasonal variability – most plants are dormant and need very little to no water to survive the winter. Even evergreen plants need minimal water this time of year. • Winter averaging – SAWS bases its residential sewer service fee on average water use in the winter months when outdoor watering needs are at their lowest. Using less water this winter may actually lower your water bill in 2012. • Shared responsibility – looking ahead to next year, we face the unprecedented possibility of Stage Three restrictions being implemented if drought conditions persist and the aquifer level drops below 640 feet. Automatic sprinkler systems make it is easy to set it and forget it, but at this time of year that can be a wasteful and costly convenience. Turn off your system and use it manually on those few occasions when watering is recommended. Juan Soulas is a conservation planner for San Antonio Water System. You can sign up for the weekly Water Saver newsletter at www.saws.org.
Yoga for Weight Loss? We've all heard the formula for weight loss. Just "burn more calories than you take in." But if weight loss is so simple, how come so many of us have a hard time with it? If we all know what to do, how come we're not doing it? There are many factors to weight loss, and there's a big gap between knowledge and action. It's a lot more than calories in, calories out. In between the "I know what I should be doing," and "how come I'm not doing that?" is a pause (and sometimes frustration). This 'pause' is where yoga can help. Being aware of your actions - what you're eating, when you’re eating it and why, are keys to weight loss success. Tuning in to your inner voice and actually hearing your body's signals is difficult. Diets fail a great deal of the time. What if you were able to smooth out your brain waves, so that you could notice the moment of choice? Yoga for weight loss? Maybe you've thought in the past that only heavy-duty cardio would do the trick, and the pounds would magically melt away. But if you are successful at this heavy-duty huffing and puffing, how come the pounds come back, and the change isn't permanent? It may surprise you to know that a recent study at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that an ongoing yoga practice correlates nicely with a healthy weight - and not only because of the calorie burn. (Excerpts from Natural Health, “The New Weight-Loss Math,” by Hillari Dowdle). Yoga practitioners were found to be "more aware of what they were eating and better able to stop when they were full," characteristics that the study attributes to mindfulness. In yoga, postures are practiced slowly, which is counter-intuitive to what the mind wants. We want to burn calories, and lose weight this instant, so we think we have to move fast. But, by practicing the postures slowly, we allow our minds to catch up with our bodies. We use the breath to actually feel what our muscles are doing. And this introspection, this reflection, will bring about an awareness. An awareness of choice. "Smoothing out the brain waves and calming down the nervous system give you an opportunity to notice the moment of choice," explains Ashley Turner, M.A. "You get to ask yourself, 'Do I really want to eat more?' Most of us never even encounter that moment," she adds. Yoga can help you develop that awareness. And, it can also help you remove toxins from your body. New studies indicate that toxins in the body suppress thyroid function, slowing metabolism. "Scientists now believe that the obesity epidemic is going hand in hand with an increase in environmental toxins," says Gaetano Morello, N.D. from British Columbia. And fasting only slows your metabolism and causes more toxins to be released from your fat stores. Yoga can help remove these toxins. You will get more benefits from yoga than you could ever imagine. And over time, it gets easier and more fun. No, it will not be a quick "fix" overnight. But what if you could develop the awareness to be more mindful of what you were eating, and better able to stop when you were full? These are all characteristics of mindfulness, which is practiced in every yoga class. Hope to see you in class soon! Submitted by Melinda Jennings
